This study utilizes cross-country survey data to analyze differences in attitudes toward cryptocurrency as an alternative to traditional money issued by a central bank. Particularly, we investigate women’s general attitude toward cryptocurrency systems. Results suggest that women invest less into cryptocurrency, show less interest in the future cryptocurrency investment, and see less economic potential in these systems than men do. Further evidence shows that these attitudes are directly connected with lower literacy in cryptocurrency systems. These findings support theory on gender differences in investment behavior. We contribute to the existing literature by conducting a cross-country survey on cryptocurrency attitudes in Europe and Asia, and hence show that this gender effect is robust across these cultures.

EMOOCs 2021

From June 22 to June 24, 2021, Hasso Plattner Institute, Potsdam, hosted the seventh European MOOC Stakeholder Summit (EMOOCs 2021) together with the eighth ACM Learning@Scale Conference.
Due to the COVID-19 situation, the conference was held fully online.
The boost in digital education worldwide as a result of the pandemic was also one of the main topics of this year’s EMOOCs. All institutions of learning have been forced to transform and redesign their educational methods, moving from traditional models to hybrid or completely online models at scale. The learnings, derived from practical experience and research, have been explored in EMOOCs 2021 in six tracks and additional workshops, covering various aspects of this field. In this publication, we present papers from the conference’s Experience Track, the Policy Track, the Business Track, the International Track, and the Workshops.
Conformational Insights into Recognition Mechanism of O-Antigen Polysaccharides by Tailspike Protein

The papers collected in this volume were presented at a Graduate/Postgraduate Student Conference with the title Information Structure: Empirical Perspectives on Theory held on December 2 and 3, 2011 at Potsdam-Griebnitzsee. The main goal of the conference was to connect young researchers working on information structure (IS) related topics and to discuss various IS categories such as givenness, focus, topic, and contrast. The aim of the conference was to find at least partial answers to the following questions: What IS categories are necessary? Are they gradient/continuous? How can one deal with optionality or redundancy? How are IS categories encoded grammatically? How do different empirical methods contribute to distinguishing between the influence of different IS categories on language comprehension and production? To answer these questions, a range of languages (Avatime, Chinese, German, Ishkashimi, Modern Greek, Old Saxon, Russian, Russian Sign Language and Sign Language of the Netherlands) and a range of phenomena from phonology, semantics, and syntax were investigated. The presented theories and data were based on different kinds of linguistic evidence: syntactic and semantic fieldwork, corpus studies, and phonological experiments. The six papers presented in this volume discuss a variety of IS categories, such as emphasis and contrast (Stavropoulous, Titov), association with focus and topics (van Putten, Karvovskaya), and givenness and backgrounding (Kimmelmann, Röhr).
The holocaust in the USSR

This paper sketches the current status of international scholarship on the subject of the Holocaust in the USSR and its place in the wider military conflict of the Second World War. Research on this topic over the last 20 to 30 years has been truly international and the findings of this research cannot be sketched here without pointing to the contributions made by German, American, Russian, Israeli, British and Australian historians. Historians from these countries have made important contributions to our understanding of key questions relating to this subject. These questions address, among other things, pre-invasion orders issued to German units; the radicalisation of German policy, culminating in the root-and-branch extermination of Soviet Jewry; the network of ghettos set up on Soviet territory; the nature of the killing and the methods used to murder these victims; the total death toll of the Holocaust in the USSR; and the relationship between war and extermination, in which genocide can be regarded as an actual strategy of warfare pursued by the German Reich.
E-Learning Symposium 2018

In den vergangenen Jahren sind viele E-Learning-Innovationen entstanden. Einige davon wurden auf den vergangenen E-Learning Symposien der Universität Potsdam präsentiert: Das erste E-Learning Symposium im Jahr 2012 konzentrierte sich auf unterschiedliche Möglichkeiten der Studierendenaktivierung und Lehrgestaltung. Das Symposium 2014 rückte vor allem die Studierenden ins Zentrum der Aufmerksamkeit. Im Jahr 2016 kam es durch das Zusammengehen des Symposiums mit der DeLFI-Tagung zu einer Fokussierung auf technische Innovationen. Doch was ist aus den Leuchttürmen von gestern geworden, und brauchen wir überhaupt noch neue Leuchttürme? Das Symposium setzt sich in diesem Jahr unter dem Motto „Innovation und Nachhaltigkeit – (k)ein Gegensatz?“ mit mediengestützten Lehr- und Lernprozessen im universitären Kontext auseinander und reflektiert aktuelle technische sowie didaktische Entwicklungen mit Blick auf deren mittel- bis langfristigen Einsatz in der Praxis.
Dieser Tagungsband zum E-Learning Symposium 2018 an der Universität Potsdam beinhaltet eine Mischung von Forschungs- und Praxisbeiträgen aus verschiedenen Fachdisziplinen und eröffnet vielschichtige Perspektiven auf das Thema E-Learning. Dabei werden die Vielfalt der didaktischen Einsatzszenarien als auch die Potentiale von Werk-zeugen und Methoden der Informatik in ihrem Zusammenspiel beleuchtet.
In seiner Keynote widmet sich Reinhard Keil dem Motto des Symposiums und geht der Nachhaltigkeit bei E-Learning-Projekten auf den Grund. Dabei analysiert und beleuchtet er anhand seiner über 15-jährigen Forschungspraxis die wichtigsten Wirkfaktoren und formuliert Empfehlungen zur Konzeption von E-Learning-Projekten. Im Gegensatz zu rein auf Kostenersparnis ausgerichteten (hochschul-)politischen Forderungen proklamiert er den Ansatz der hypothesengeleiteten Technikgestaltung, in der Nachhaltigkeit als Leitfrage oder Forschungsstrategie verstanden werden kann. In eine ähnliche Richtung geht der Beitrag von Iris Braun et al., die über Erfolgsfaktoren beim Einsatz von Audience Response Systemen in der universitären Lehre berichten.
Ein weiteres aktuelles Thema, sowohl für die Bildungstechnologie als auch in den Bildungswissenschaften allgemein, ist die Kompetenzorientierung und –modellierung. Hier geht es darum (Problemlöse-)Fähigkeiten gezielt zu beschreiben und in den Mittelpunkt der Lehre zu stellen. Johannes Konert stellt in einem eingeladenen Vortrag zwei Projekte vor, die den Prozess beginnend bei der Definition von Kompetenzen, deren Modellierung in einem semantischen maschinenlesbaren Format bis hin zur Erarbeitung von Methoden zur Kompetenzmessung und der elektronischen Zertifizierung aufzeigen. Dabei geht er auf technische Möglichkeiten, aber auch Grenzen ein. Auf einer spezifischeren Ebene beschäftigt sich Sarah Stumpf mit digitalen bzw. mediendidaktischen Kompetenzen im Lehramtsstudium und stellt ein Framework für die Förderung ebensolcher Kompetenzen bei angehenden Lehrkräften vor.
Der Einsatz von E-Learning birgt noch einige Herausforderungen. Dabei geht es oft um die Verbindung von Didaktik und Technik, den Erhalt von Aufmerksamkeit oder den Aufwand für das Erstellen von interaktiven Lehr- und Lerninhalten. Drei Beiträge in diesem Tagungsband beschäftigen sich mit dieser Thematik in unterschiedlichen Kontexten und zeigen Best-Practices und Lösungsansätze auf: Der Beitrag von Martina Wahl und Michael Hölscher behandelt den besonderen Kontext von Blended Learning-Szenarien in berufsbegleitenden Studiengängen. Um die Veröffentlichung eines global frei verfügbaren Onlinekurses abseits der großen MOOC Plattformen und den didaktischen Herausforderungen auch hinsichtlich der Motivation geht es im Beitrag von Ennio Marani und Isabel Jaisli. Schließlich schlagen Gregor Damnik et al. die automatische Erzeugung von Aufgaben zur Erhöhung von Interaktivität und Adaptivität in digitalen Lernressourcen vor, um den teilweise erheblichen Erstellungsaufwand zu reduzieren.
Zum Thema E-Learning zählen auch immer mobile Apps bzw. Spiele. Gleich zwei Beiträge beschäftigen sich mit dem Einsatz von E-Learning-Tools im Gesundheitskontext: Anna Tscherejkina und Anna Morgiel stellen in ihrem Beitrag Minispiele zum Training von sozio-emotionalen Kompetenzen für Menschen mit Autismus vor, und Stephanie Herbstreit et al. berichten vom Einsatz einer mobilen Lern-App zur Verbesserung von klinisch-praktischem Unterricht.
Thema des Workshops waren alle Fragen, die sich der Vermittlung von Informatikgegenständen im Hochschulbereich widmen. Dazu gehören u.a.: - fachdidaktische Konzepte der Vermittlung einzelner Informatikgegenstände - methodische Lösungen, wie spezielle Lehr- und Lernformen, Durchführungskonzepte - Studienkonzepte und Curricula, insbesondere im Zusammenhang mit Bachelor- und Masterstudiengängen - E-Learning-Ansätze, wenn sie ein erkennbares didaktisches Konzept verfolgen empirische Ergebnisse und Vergleichsstudien. Die Fachtagung widmete sich ausgewählten Fragestellungen dieses Themenkomplexes, die durch Vorträge ausgewiesener Experten, durch eingereichte Beiträge und durch eine Präsentation intensiv behandelt wurden.
Mobile Endgeräte und die dazugehörigen Applikationen sind zu einem unverzichtbaren Bestandteil des täglichen Lebens geworden und ermöglichen den ortsund zeitunabhängigen Zugriff auf wichtige Informationen. Hochschulspezifische An- gebote sind im mobilen Bereich hingegen noch immer nicht flächendeckend anzutreffen und lassen sich i. d. R. nur auf Einzelaktivitäten Studierender und Lehrender zurückführen. Dabei können mobile Applikationen einen essentiellen Beitrag zur Verbesserung der studentischen Selbstorganisation sowie für die Ausgestaltung und Ergänzung von konkreten Lehr-/Lernszenarien leisten. Dieser Artikel stellt ein modulares Hochschul-App-Framework vor, das sowohl zentrale campusbezogene Dienste als auch dezentrale Lernapplikationen unter einer Oberfläche vereint anbietet. Anhand einer Analyse von Stärken und Schwächen werden verschiedene Ansätze in Hinblick auf Anforderungen, Entwicklung, Wartung und Betrieb der Hochschul-App zusammengefasst und bewertet. Es wird auf die zugrundeliegende serviceorientierte Architektur eingegangen, die eine Portierung der Applikation auf andere Hochschulen mit einem vertretbaren Aufwand ermöglicht. Der Beitrag schließt mit einer Darstellung der ersten Ergebnisse und weiterführender Überlegungen und Arbeiten.
The term Personal Learning Environment (PLE) is associated with the desire to put the learner in control of his own learning process, so that he is able to set and accomplish the desired learning goals at the right time with the learning environment chosen by him. Gradually, such a learning environment includes several digital content, services and tools. It is thus summarized as the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). Even though the construction of an individual PLE is a complex task, several approaches to support this process already exist. They mostly occur under the umbrella term PLE or with little accentuations like iPLE, which especially live within the context of institutions. This paper sums up the variety of attempts and technical approaches to establish a PLE and suggests a categorization for them.
Audience Response Systeme (ARS) stellen eine Ergänzung der Hochschullehre dar, um die Teilnehmeraktivierung zu stärken und die Studierenden unmittelbar in das Vorlesungsgeschehen einzubinden. Es existiert eine Fülle an Lösungen, die entweder ohne dedizierte Hardware auskommen (sogenannte Software-Clicker) oder die Anschaffung meist kommerzieller Hardware- Lösungen voraussetzen. An dieser Stelle versucht Hands. UP eine integrative Brücke zu schlagen. Auf Grundlage einer Kosten- und Aufwandsschätzung ausgewählter ARS-Lösungen soll die Notwendigkeit hochschulübergreifender Kooperationen hinsichtlich einer adäquate Weiterentwicklung und des Einsatzes von ARS in der Lehre motiviert werden.

Developmental Gains in Physical Fitness Components of Keyage and Older-than-Keyage Third-Graders

Children who were enrolled according to legal enrollment dates (i.e., keyage third-graders aged eight to nine years) exhibit a positive linear physical fitness development (Fühner et al., 2021). However, children who were enrolled with a delay of one year or who repeated a grade (i.e., older-than-keyage children [OTK] aged nine to ten years in third grade) appear to exhibit a poorer physical fitness relative to what could be expected given their chronological age (Fühner et al., 2022). However, because Fühner et al. (2022) compared the performance of OTK children to predicted test scores that were extrapolated based on the data of keyage children, the observed physical fitness of these children could either indicate a delayed physical-fitness development or some physiological or psychological changes occurring during the tenth year of life. We investigate four hypotheses about this effect. (H1) OTK children are biologically younger than keyage children. A formula transforming OTK’s chronological age into a proxy for their biological age brings some of the observed cross-sectional age-related development in line with the predicted age-related development based on the data of keyage children, but large negative group differences remain. Hypotheses 2 to 4 were tested with a longitudinal assessment. (H2) Physiological changes due to biological maturation or psychological factors cause a stagnation of physical fitness development in the tenth year of life. H2 predicts a decline of performance from third to fourth grade also for keyage children. (H3) OTK children exhibit an age-related (temporary) developmental delay in the tenth year of life, but later catch up to the performance of age-matched keyage children. H3 predicts a larger developmental gain for OTK than for keyage children from third to fourth grade. (H4) OTK children exhibit a sustained physical fitness deficit and do not catch up over time. H4 predicts a positive development for keyage and OTK children, with no greater development for OTK compared to keyage children. The longitudinal study was based on a subset of children from the EMOTIKON project (www.uni-potsdam.de/emotikon). The physical fitness (cardiorespiratory endurance [6-minute-run test], coordination [star-run test], speed [20-m sprint test], lower [standing long jump test] and upper [ball push test] limbs muscle power, and balance [one-legged stance test]) of 1,274 children (1,030 keyage and 244 OTK children) from 32 different schools was tested in third grade and retested one year later in fourth grade. Results: (a) Both keyage and OTK children exhibit a positive longitudinal development from third to fourth grade in all six physical fitness components. (b) There is no evidence for a different longitudinal development of keyage and OTK children. (c) Keyage children (approximately 9.5 years in fourth grade) outperform age-matched OTK children (approximately 9.5 years in third grade) in all six physical fitness components. The results show that the physical fitness of OTK children is indeed impaired and are in support of a sustained difference in physical fitness between the groups of keyage and OTK children (H4).
Developing a new product generation requires the transfer of knowledge among various knowledge carriers. Several factors influence knowledge transfer, e.g., the complexity of engineering tasks or the competence of employees, which can decrease the efficiency and effectiveness of knowledge transfers in product engineering. Hence, improving those knowledge transfers obtains great potential, especially against the backdrop of experienced employees leaving the company due to retirement, so far, research results show, that the knowledge transfer velocity can be raised by following the Knowledge Transfer Velocity Model and implementing so-called interventions in a product engineering context. In most cases, the implemented interventions have a positive effect on knowledge transfer speed improvement. In addition to that, initial theoretical findings describe factors influencing the quality of knowledge transfers and outline a setting to empirically investigate how the quality can be improved by introducing a general description of knowledge transfer reference situations and principles to measure the quality of knowledge artifacts. To assess the quality of knowledge transfers in a product engineering context, the Knowledge Transfer Quality Model (KTQM) is created, which serves as a basis to develop and implement quality-dependent interventions for different knowledge transfer situations. As a result, this paper introduces the specifications of eight situation-adequate interventions to improve the quality of knowledge transfers in product engineering following an intervention template. Those interventions are intended to be implemented in an industrial setting to measure the quality of knowledge transfers and validate their effect.

Fighting false information

The digital transformation poses challenges for public sector organizations (PSOs) such as the dissemination of false information in social media which can cause uncertainty among citizens and decrease trust in the public sector. Some PSOs already successfully deploy conversational agents (CAs) to communicate with citizens and support digital service delivery. In this paper, we used design science research (DSR) to examine how CAs could be designed to assist PSOs in fighting false information online. We conducted a workshop with the municipality of Kristiansand, Norway to define objectives that a CA would have to meet for addressing the identified false information challenges. A prototypical CA was developed and evaluated in two iterations with the municipality and students from Norway. This research-in-progress paper presents findings and next steps of the DSR process. This research contributes to advancing the digital transformation of the public sector in combating false information problems.
Reliability of ultrasound measurements for subcutaneous adipose tissue in elite canoe athletes

Perfectionism is a personality disposition characterized by setting extremely high performance-standards coupled with critical self-evaluations. Often conceived as positive, perfectionism can yield not only beneficial but also deleterious outcomes ranging from anxiety to burnout. In this proposal, we set out to investigate the role of the technology and, particularly, social media in individuals’ strivings for perfection. We lay down theoretical bases for the possibility that social media plays a role in the development of perfectionism. To empirically test the hypothesized relationship, we propose a comprehensive study design based on the experience sampling method. Lastly, we provide an overview of the planned analysis and future steps.

Recent spikes in social networking site (SNS) usage times have launched investigations into reasons for excessive SNS usage. Extending research on social factors (i.e., fear of missing out), this study considers the News Feed setup. More specifically, we suggest that the order of the News Feed (chronological vs. algorithmically assembled posts) affects usage behaviors. Against the background of the variable reward schedule, this study hypothesizes that the different orders exert serendipity differently. Serendipity, termed as unexpected lucky encounters with information, resembles variable rewards. Studies have evidenced a relation between variable rewards and excessive behaviors. Similarly, we hypothesize that order-induced serendipitous encounters affect SNS usage times and explore this link in a two-wave survey with an experimental setup (users using either chronological or algorithmic News Feeds). While theoretically extending explanations for increased SNS usage times by considering the News Feed order, practically the study will offer recommendations for relevant stakeholders.
The devil in disguise

Envy constitutes a serious issue on Social Networking Sites (SNSs), as this painful emotion can severely diminish individuals' well-being. With prior research mainly focusing on the affective consequences of envy in the SNS context, its behavioral consequences remain puzzling. While negative interactions among SNS users are an alarming issue, it remains unclear to which extent the harmful emotion of malicious envy contributes to these toxic dynamics. This study constitutes a first step in understanding malicious envy’s causal impact on negative interactions within the SNS sphere. Within an online experiment, we experimentally induce malicious envy and measure its immediate impact on users’ negative behavior towards other users. Our findings show that malicious envy seems to be an essential factor fueling negativity among SNS users and further illustrate that this effect is especially pronounced when users are provided an objective factor to mask their envy and justify their norm-violating negative behavior.
The envy spiral

On Social Networking Sites (SNS) users disclose mostly positive and often self-enhancing information. Scholars refer to this phenomenon as the positivity bias in SNS communication (PBSC). However, while theoretical explanations for this phenomenon have been proposed, an empirical proof of these theorized mechanisms is still missing. The project presented in this Research-in-Progress paper aims at explaining the PBSC with the mechanism specified in the self-enhancement envy spiral. Specifically, we hypothesize that feelings of envy drive people to post positive and self-enhancing content on SNS. To test this hypothesis, we developed an experimental design allowing to examine the causal effect of envy on the positivity of users’ subsequently posted content. In a preliminary study, we tested our manipulation of envy and could show its effectiveness in inducing different levels of envy between our groups. Our project will help to broaden the understanding of the complex dynamics of SNS and the potentially adverse driving forces underlying them.
HPI Future SOC Lab

Das Future SOC Lab am HPI ist eine Kooperation des Hasso-Plattner-Instituts mit verschiedenen Industriepartnern. Seine Aufgabe ist die Ermöglichung und Förderung des Austausches zwischen Forschungsgemeinschaft und Industrie.
Am Lab wird interessierten Wissenschaftlern eine Infrastruktur von neuester Hard- und Software kostenfrei für Forschungszwecke zur Verfügung gestellt. Dazu zählen teilweise noch nicht am Markt verfügbare Technologien, die im normalen Hochschulbereich in der Regel nicht zu finanzieren wären, bspw. Server mit bis zu 64 Cores und 2 TB Hauptspeicher. Diese Angebote richten sich insbesondere an Wissenschaftler in den Gebieten Informatik und Wirtschaftsinformatik. Einige der Schwerpunkte sind Cloud Computing, Parallelisierung und In-Memory Technologien.
In diesem Technischen Bericht werden die Ergebnisse der Forschungsprojekte des Jahres 2015 vorgestellt. Ausgewählte Projekte stellten ihre Ergebnisse am 15. April 2015 und 4. November 2015 im Rahmen der Future SOC Lab Tag Veranstaltungen vor.

Data sharing requires researchers to publish their (primary) data and any supporting research materials. With increased attention on reproducibility and more transparent research requiring sharing of data, the issues surrounding data sharing are moving beyond whether data sharing is beneficial, to what kind of research data should be shared and how. However, despite its benefits, data sharing still is not common practice in Information Systems (IS) research. The panel seeks to discuss the controversies related to data sharing in research, specifically focusing on the IS discipline. It remains unclear how the positive effects of data sharing that are often framed as extending beyond the individual researcher (e.g., openness for innovation) can be utilized while reducing the downsides often associated with negative consequences for the individual researcher (e.g., losing a competitive advantage). To foster data sharing practices in IS, the panel will address this dilemma by drawing on the panelists’ expertise.
Visual Social Networking Sites (SNSs) enable users to present themselves favorably to gain likes and the attention of others. Especially, Instagram is known for its focus on beauty, fitness, fashion, and dietary topics. Although a large body of research reports negative weight-related outcomes of SNS usage (e.g., body dissatisfaction, body image concerns), studies examining how SNS usage relates to these outcomes are scarce. Based on the visual normalization theory, we argue that SNS content facilitates normalization of so-called thin- and fit-ideals, thereby leading to biased perceptions of the average body weight in society. Therefore, this study tests whether Instagram use is associated with perceiving that the average person weighs less. Responses of 181 survey participants confirm that Instagram use is negatively related to average weight perception of both women and men. These findings contribute to the growing body of research on how SNS use relates to negative weight-related outcomes.
Mit der politischen Wende in den Staaten des ehemaligen Ostblockes wurde für viele militärisch genutzte Flächen ein tiefgreifender Nutzungswandel eingeleitet. Truppenübungsplätze als stark gestörte Bestandteile unserer Kulturlandschaft weisen auf großen Flächen naturschutzfachlich wertvolle Habitatmosaike mit speziellen Lebensgemeinschaften auf. Der Nutzungswandel ist mit einer Veränderung der Vegetationsstrukturen (Sukzession) und weiteren landschaftsökologischen Prozessen verbunden. Der ehemalige Truppenübungsplatz Döberitz im Norden der Landeshauptstadt Potsdam kann auf eine lange militärische Nutzungsgeschichte verweisen (erste Manöver des Soldatenkönigs im Jahr 1713). Nach 1992 wurden das NSG Döberitzer Heide (3.415 ha) und das NSG Ferbitzer Bruch (1.155 ha) ausgewiesen. Als Schutzgebiete nach der Vogelschutzrichtlinie sind sie Bestandteile des kohärenten Schutzgebietssystems Natura 2000 der europäischen Gemeinschaft. Trotz des Schutzstatus und der militärischen Altlasten unterliegt das Gebiet als größte zusammenhängende Naturfläche im engeren Verflechtungsraum des Landes Brandenburg einem hohen Nutzungsdruck. <hr> Interdisziplinäres Zentrum für Musterdynamik und Angewandte Fernerkundung Workshop vom 9. - 10. The digitalization of value networks holds out the prospect of many advantages for the participating compa- nies. Utilizing information platforms, cross-company data exchange enables increased efficiency of collab- oration and offers space for new business models and services. In addition to the technological challenges, the fear of know-how leakage appears to be a significant roadblock that hinders the beneficial realization of new business models in digital ecosystems. This paper provides the necessary building blocks of digital participation and, in particular, classifies the issue of trust creation within it as a significant success factor. Based on these findings, it presents a solution concept that, by linking the identified building blocks, offers the individual actors of the digital value network the opportunity to retain sovereignty over their data and know-how and to use the potential of extensive networking. In particular, the presented concept takes into account the relevant dilemma, that every actor (e. g. the machine users) has to be able to control his commu- nicated data at any time and have sufficient possibilities for intervention that, on the one hand, satisfy the need for protection of his knowledge and, on the other hand, do not excessively diminish the benefits of the system or the business. Taking up this perspective, this paper introduces dedicated data sovereignty and shows a possible implementation concept.
Scaling up CSP

Concentrating solar power (CSP) is one of the few scalable technologies capable of delivering dispatchable renewable power. Therefore, many expect it to shoulder a significant share of system balancing in a renewable electricity future powered by cheap, intermittent PV and wind power: the IEA, for example, projects 73 GW CSP by 2030 and several hundred GW by 2050 in its Net-Zero by 2050 pathway. In this paper, we assess how fast CSP can be expected to scale up and how long time it would take to get new, high-efficiency CSP technologies to market, based on observed trends and historical patterns. We find that to meaningfully contribute to net-zero pathways the CSP sector needs to reach and exceed the maximum historical annual growth rate of 30%/year last seen between 2010-2014 and maintain it for at least two decades. Any CSP deployment in the 2020s will rely mostly on mature existing technologies, namely parabolic trough and molten-salt towers, but likely with adapted business models such as hybrid CSP-PV stations, combining the advantages of higher-cost dispatchable and low-cost intermittent power. New third-generation CSP designs are unlikely to play a role in markets during the 2020s, as they are still at or before the pilot stage and, judging from past pilot-to-market cycles for CSP, they will likely not be ready for market deployment before 2030. CSP can contribute to low-cost zero-emission energy systems by 2050, but to make that happen, at the scale foreseen in current energy models, ambitious technology-specific policy support is necessary, as soon as possible and in several countries.

Am Potsdamer MenschenRechtsTag – zeitlich in Nähe zum Internationalen Tag der Menschenrechte am 10. Dezember gelegen – diskutiert das MenschenRechtsZentrum der Universität Potsdam wichtige Menschenrechtsthemen mit einem konkreten gesellschafts- und oder rechtspolitischen Bezug. Ende 2012 lag der Fokus auf den Menschenrechten von Zuwanderern. Aus einer grundlegenden philosophischen Perspektive wurde erläutert, dass Beschränkungen des menschenrechtlichen Status dieser Personengruppe nur schwer und in Einzelfällen begründbar sind; eine praktische und rechtspolitische Sichtweise legte konkreten Reformbedarf im Asylverfahren offen, dem inzwischen immerhin zum Teil entsprochen wurde.
Social media constitute an important arena for public debates and steady interchange of issues relevant to society. To boost their reputation, commercial organizations also engage in political, social, or environmental debates on social media. To engage in this type of digital activism, organizations increasingly utilize the social media profiles of executive employees and other brand ambassadors. However, the relationship between brand ambassadors’ digital activism and corporate reputation is only vaguely understood. The results of a qualitative inquiry suggest that digital activism via brand ambassadors can be risky (e.g., creating additional surface for firestorms, financial loss) and rewarding (e.g., emitting authenticity, employing ‘megaphones’ for industry change) at the same time. The paper informs both scholarship and practitioners about strategic trade-offs that need to be considered when employing brand ambassadors for digital activism.

Many researchers hesitate to provide full access to their datasets due to a lack of knowledge about research data management (RDM) tools and perceived fears, such as losing the value of one's own data. Existing tools and approaches often do not take into account these fears and missing knowledge. In this study, we examined how conversational agents (CAs) can provide a natural way of guidance through RDM processes and nudge researchers towards more data sharing. This work offers an online experiment in which researchers interacted with a CA on a self-developed RDM platform and a survey on participants’ data sharing behavior. Our findings indicate that the presence of a guiding and enlightening CA on an RDM platform has a constructive influence on both the intention to share data and the actual behavior of data sharing. Notably, individual factors do not appear to impede or hinder this effect.

This first volume of the DIGAREC Series holds the proceedings of the conference “The Philosophy of Computer Games”, held at the University of Potsdam from May 8-10, 2008. The contributions of the conference address three fields of computer game research that are philosophically relevant and, likewise, to which philosophical reflection is crucial. These are: ethics and politics, the action-space of games, and the magic circle. All three topics are interlinked and constitute the paradigmatic object of computer games: Whereas the first describes computer games on the outside, looking at the cultural effects of games as well as on moral practices acted out with them, the second describes computer games on the inside, i.e. how they are constituted as a medium. The latter finally discusses the way in which a border between these two realms, games and non-games, persists or is already transgressed in respect to a general performativity.

Increasingly fast development cycles and individualized products pose major challenges for today's smart production systems in times of industry 4.0. The systems must be flexible and continuously adapt to changing conditions while still guaranteeing high throughputs and robustness against external disruptions. Deep rein- forcement learning (RL) algorithms, which already reached impressive success with Google DeepMind's AlphaGo, are increasingly transferred to production systems to meet related requirements. Unlike supervised and unsupervised machine learning techniques, deep RL algorithms learn based on recently collected sensor- and process-data in direct interaction with the environment and are able to perform decisions in real-time. As such, deep RL algorithms seem promising given their potential to provide decision support in complex environments, as production systems, and simultaneously adapt to changing circumstances. While different use-cases for deep RL emerged, a structured overview and integration of findings on their application are missing. To address this gap, this contribution provides a systematic literature review of existing deep RL applications in the field of production planning and control as well as production logistics. From a performance perspective, it became evident that deep RL can beat heuristics significantly in their overall performance and provides superior solutions to various industrial use-cases. Nevertheless, safety and reliability concerns must be overcome before the widespread use of deep RL is possible which presumes more intensive testing of deep RL in real world applications besides the already ongoing intensive simulations.
Enhancing economic efficiency in modular production systems through deep reinforcement learning

In times of increasingly complex production processes and volatile customer demands, the production adaptability is crucial for a company's profitability and competitiveness. The ability to cope with rapidly changing customer requirements and unexpected internal and external events guarantees robust and efficient production processes, requiring a dedicated control concept at the shop floor level. Yet in today's practice, conventional control approaches remain in use, which may not keep up with the dynamic behaviour due to their scenario-specific and rigid properties. To address this challenge, deep learning methods were increasingly deployed due to their optimization and scalability properties. However, these approaches were often tested in specific operational applications and focused on technical performance indicators such as order tardiness or total throughput. In this paper, we propose a deep reinforcement learning based production control to optimize combined techno-financial performance measures. Based on pre-defined manufacturing modules that are supplied and operated by multiple agents, positive effects were observed in terms of increased revenue and reduced penalties due to lower throughput times and fewer delayed products. The combined modular and multi-staged approach as well as the distributed decision-making further leverage scalability and transferability to other scenarios.
Der Forschungskreis Vereinte Nationen veranstaltete am 25. Juni 2016 seine dreizehnte Konferenz in Kooperation mit dem „Forum internationale Ordnung“ des Auswärtigen Amtes. Die Potsdamer UNO-Konferenzen stellen in ihrem Programm traditionell eine Verbindung von Wissenschaft und Praxis her unter Beteiligung unterschiedlicher Disziplinen.
Die Konferenz 2016 widmete sich dem Thema „Die Rolle der Vereinten Nationen in der multilateralen Entwicklungszusammenarbeit“.
Entwicklung als wichtiges Ziel der Vereinten Nationen und ihrer Mitgliedstaaten ist auch für andere Handlungs- und Politikfelder wichtig. Bilanz und Ausblick, die auf der Konferenz unternommen wurden, betrafen deshalb nicht nur die Entwicklungspolitik im eigentlichen Sinne – hier standen die 2015 beschlossenen Nachhaltigkeitsziele (SDGs) zur Debatte –, sondern bezogen auch umweltpolitische und menschenrechtliche Aspekte mit ein.
Die Referate zum Thema Entwicklung wurden eingerahmt von zwei Vorträgen zu aktuellen UN-politischen Fragen: der Wahl des neuen Generalsekretärs der Vereinten Nationen in New York nach einem reformierten Wahlverfahren, das mehr Transparenz und für UN-Mitgliedstaaten und NGOs mehr Beteiligungsmöglichkeiten bietet, und die Neuorganisation innerhalb des Auswärtigen Amtes, was die Vereinten Nationen betrifft.
Background:
Like most countries, Germany is currently recruiting international nurses due to staff shortages. While these are mostly academic, the academisation of nursing in Germany has only just begun. This allows for a broader look at the participation of migrant nurses: How do care teams deal with the fact that immigrant colleagues are theoretically more highly qualified than long-established colleagues?
Methods:
Case studies were conducted in four inpatient care teams of two hospitals in 2022. Qualitative data include 26 observation protocols, 4 group discussions and 17 guided interviews. These were analysed using the documentary method and validated intersubjectively.
Results:
Due to current academisation efforts in Germany and the immigration of academised nursing staff from abroad, the areas of activity and responsibility of nursing in Germany are under negotiating pressure. This concerns basic care for example, which in Germany is provided by skilled workers, but in other countries is mostly provided by assistants or relatives. The question of who should provide basic care, whether all nurses or only nursing assistants, documents the struggle between an established and a new understanding of care. In this context, the knowledge and skills of migrant and academicised care workers become a crucial aspect in the struggle for a new professional identity for care in Germany.
Conclusions:
The specific situation in Germany makes it possible to show the potential for change that international care migration can constitute for destination countries. The far-reaching process of change of German nursing is given a further dimension not only by its academization, but by the immigration of international and academically trained nursing staff, where inclusive or exclusive effects can already be observed.
Key messages: The increasing proportion of migrant nurses accelerates the current discussion on nursing in Germany. Conflict areas show up in everyday work of care teams and must be addressed there.
Einleitung
Pflege in Deutschland befindet sich in einem Veränderungsprozess. Die politisch forcierte Zuwanderung von Pflegekräften sowie die Akademisierung führen zu einem enormen Anpassungsdruck bei allen Beteiligten. Wie wirkt sich dies auf den Arbeitsalltag aus?
Methoden
Die qualitative Datenbasis umfasst bisher 36 Tage Teilnehmende Beobachtung, 17 Themenzentrierte Leitfadeninterviews sowie vier Gruppendiskussionen in vier Pflegeteams zweier Krankenhäuser. Die Analyse erfolgt mit der Dokumentarischen Methode.
Ergebnisse
Am Beispiel der Grundpflege (u. A. dem „Waschen“) wird deutlich, wie die Pflegeteams ihren Arbeitsalltag neu aushandeln. Die Teams mit einer hohen migrationsbezogenen Diversität argumentieren eher, dass die Aufgaben der Grund- und Behandlungspflege entsprechend der Qualifikation als Hilfs- oder Fachkraft erledigt werden sollen. Hier treten stereotype (kulturalisierende) Zuschreibungen in den Hintergrund. Demgegenüber berufen sich Pflegeteams mit einer niedrigen migrationsbezogenen Diversität eher darauf, dass die Grundpflege in Deutschland – anders als in anderen Ländern – zu den Aufgaben einer examinierten Pflegefachkraft zählt. Kolleg*innen aus dem Ausland wird die pflegerische Kompetenz daher eher abgesprochen.
Schlussfolgerung
Die Frage nach der Aufteilung von Grund- und Behandlungspflege, ist auf allen Stationen virulent. Die Teams entwickeln jedoch in Abhängigkeit von ihrer spezifischen Heterogenität unterschiedliche Umgangsweisen. Demzufolge sollte sich Personal- und Organisationsentwicklung insbesondere an den Pflegeteams orientieren.

Forth is nice and flexible but to a philosopher and teacher educator Logo is the more impressing language. Both are relatives of Lisp, but Forth has a reverse Polish notation where as Logo has an infix notation. Logo allows top down programming, Forth only bottom up. Logo enables recursive programming, Forth does not. Logo includes turtle graphics, Forth has nothing comparable. So what to do if you can't get Logo and have no information about its inner architecture? This should be a case of "empirical modelling": How can you model observable results of the behaviour of Logo in terms of Forth? The main steps to solve this problem are shown in the first part of the paper.
The second part of the paper discusses the problem of modelling and shows that the modelling of making and the modelling of recognition have the same mathematical structure. So "empirical modelling" can also serve for modelling desired behaviour of technical systems.
The last part of the paper will show that the heuristic potential of a problem which should be modeled is more important than the programming language. The Picasso construal shows, in a very simple way, how children of different ages can model emotional relations in human behaviour with a simple Logo system.
In Time and the Other Johannes Fabian analysed how modern conceptions of time were “not only secularized and naturalized but also thoroughly spatialized.” According to Fabian, this was particularly visible in modern anthropology which “promoted a scheme in terms of which not only past cultures but all living societies were irrevocably placed on a temporal slope, a stream of Time – some upstream, others downstream.”3 Anthropologists attributed otherness to a distant past which was traditionally associated with cultural retardation, i.e. a lower degree of development, progress, and civilization. Cultural difference was expressed in terms of temporal distance while temporal distance was attributed to spatial remoteness. The result was a phenomenon that Fabian coined “the denial of coevalness” which pointed towards “a persistent and systematic tendency to place the referent(s) of anthropology in a Time other than the present of the producer of anthropological discourse.
