SKOR and GORK are outward-rectifying plant potassium channels from Arabidopsis thaliana. They belong to the Shaker superfamily of voltage-dependent K+ channels. Channels of this class are composed of four alpha-subunits and subunit assembly is a prerequisite for channel function. In this study the assembly mechanism of SKOR was investigated using the yeast two-hybrid system and functional assays in Xenopus oocytes and in yeast. We demonstrate that SKOR and GORK physically interact and assemble into heteromeric K-out channels. Deletion mutants and chimeric proteins generated from SKOR and the K-in channel alpha-subunit KAT1 revealed that the cytoplasmic C-terminus of SKOR determines channel assembly. Two domains thatchannel a-subunit KAT1 revealed that the cytoplasmic C-terminus of SKOR determines channel assembly. Two domains that are crucial for channel assembly were identified: i), a proximal interacting region comprising a putative cyclic nucleotide-binding domain together with 33 amino acids just upstream of this domain, and ii), a distal interacting region showing some resemblance to the K-T domain of KAT1. Both regions contributed differently to channel assembly. Whereas the proximal interacting region was found to be active on its own, the distal interacting region required an intact proximal interacting region to be active. K-out alpha-subunits did not assemble with K-in alpha-subunits because of the absence of interaction between their assembly sites
Assessing individual differences in achievement motivation with the Implicit Association Test

The authors examined the validity of an Implicit Association Test (Greenwald, McGhee, & Schwartz, 1998) for assessing individual differences in achievement tendencies. Eighty-eight students completed an IAT and explicit self- ratings of achievement orientation, and were then administered a mental concentration test that they performed either in the presence or in the absence of achievement-related feedback. Implicit and explicit measures of achievement orientation were uncorrelated. Under feedback, the IAT uniquely predicted students' test performance but failed to predict their self-reported task enjoyment. Conversely, explicit self-ratings were unrelated to test performance but uniquely related to subjective accounts of task enjoyment. Without feedback, individual differences in both performance and enjoyment were independent of differences in either of the two achievement orientation measures. (C) 2004 Elsevier Inc. Assessment of the reactivity of selected isoflavones against proteins in comparison to quercetin

Selected isoflavones (genistein, daidzein, formononetin, prunetin, biochanin A and two synthetic isoflavones) were allowed to interact with soy and whey proteins. The reaction products were analyzed in terms of covalent binding at the nucleophilic side chains of proteins. Changes in molecular properties of the proteins derivatives were documented by SDS-PAGE, IEF and SELDI-TOF-MS. The structural changes induced were studied using circular dichroism (CD). The in vitro digestibility was assessed with trypsin. The results show that the occurrence of the catechol moiety, i.e. the two adjacent (ortho) aromatic hydroxyl groups on ring B of the flavonoid structural skeleton appears to be perquisite condition for covalent binding to proteins. The catechol moiety on ring A was less reactive. Its absence lead to a slight or no significant reaction, although non-covalent interactions may still be possible even when lacking this structural element. A comparison of the data is also made with quercetin representing the flavonols.
A small fraction of all quasars are strongly lensed and multiply imaged, with usually a galaxy acting as the main lens. Some, or maybe all of these quasars are also affected by microlensing, the effect of stellar mass objects in the lensing galaxy. Usually only the photometric aspects of microlensing are considered: the apparent magnitudes of the quasar images vary independently because the relative motion between source, lens and observer leads to uncorrelated magnification changes as a function of time. However, stellar microlensing on quasars has yet another effect, which was first explored by Lewis & lbata (1998): the position of the quasar - i.e. the center-of-light of the many microimages - can shift by tens of microarcseconds due to the relatively sudden (dis-)appearance of a pair of microimages when a caustic is being crossed. Here we explore quantitatively the astrometric effects of microlensing on quasars for different values of the lensing parameters kappa and gamma (surface mass density and external shear) covering most of the known multiple quasar systems. We show examples of microlens-induced quasar motion (i.e. astrometric changes) and the corresponding light curves for different quasar sizes. We evaluate statistically the occurrence of large "jumps" in angular position and their correlation with apparent brightness fluctuations. We also show statistical relations between positional offsets and time from random starting points. As the amplitude of the astrometric offset depends on the source size, astrometric microlensing signatures of quasars - combined with the photometric variations - will provide. very good constraints on the sizes of quasars as a function of wavelength. We predict that such signatures will be detectable for realistic microlensing scenarios with near future technology in the infrared/optical (Keck- Interferometry, VLTI, SIM, GAIA). Such detections will show that not even high redshift quasars define a "fixed" coordinate system
Diacylglycerol kinase (DGK) phosphorylates diacylglycerol (DAG) to generate phosphatidic acid (PA). Both DAG and PA are implicated in signal transduction pathways. DGKs have been widely studied in animals, but their analysis in plants is fragmentary. Here, we report the cloning and biochemical characterization of AtDGK2, encoding DGK from Arabidopsis thaliana. AtDGK2 has a predicted molecular mass of 79.4 kDa and, like AtDGK1 previously reported, harbors two copies of a phorbol ester/DAG-binding domain in its N-terminal region. AtDGK2 belongs to a family of seven DGK genes in A. thaliana. AtDGK3 to AtDGK7 encode similar to55-kDa DGKs that lack a typical phorbol ester/DAG-binding domain. Phylogenetically, plant DGKs fall into three clusters. Members of all three clusters are widely expressed in vascular plants. Recombinant AtDGK2 was expressed in Escherichia coli and biochemically characterized. The enzyme phosphorylated 1,2-dioleoyl-sn-glycerol to yield PA, exhibiting Michaelis-Menten type kinetics. Estimated K-m and V-max values were 125 muM for DAG and 0.25 pmol of PA min(-1) mug(-1), respectively. The enzyme was maximally active at pH 7.2. Its activity was Mg2+-dependent and affected by the presence of detergents, salts, and the DGK inhibitor R59022, but not by Ca2+. AtDGK2 exhibited substrate preference for unsaturated DAG analogues (i.e. 1-stearoyl-2-arachidonoyl-sn-glycerol and 1,2- dioleoyl-sn-glycerol). The AtDGK2 gene is expressed in various tissues of the Arabidopsis plant, including leaves, roots, and flowers, as shown by Northern blot analysis and promoter-reporter gene fusions. We found that AtDGK2 is induced by exposure to low temperature (4degreesC), pointing to a role in cold signal transduction
The Arabidopsis tandem-pore K+ (TPK) channels displaying four transmembrane domains and two pore regions share structural homologies with their animal counterparts of the KCNK family. In contrast to the Shaker-like Arabidopsis channels (six transmembrane domains/one pore region), the functional properties and the biological role of plant TPK channels have not been elucidated yet. Here, we show that AtTPK4 (KCO4) localizes to the plasma membrane and is predominantly expressed in pollen. AtTPK4 (KCO4) resembles the electrical properties of a voltage-independent K+ channel after expression in Xenopus oocytes and yeast. Hyperpolarizing as well as depolarizing membrane voltages elicited instantaneous K+ currents, which were blocked by extracellular calcium and cytoplasmic protons. Functional complementation assays using a K+ transport-deficient yeast confirmed the biophysical and pharmacological properties of the AtTPK4 channel. The features of AtTPK4 point toward a role in potassium homeostasis and membrane voltage control of the growing pollen tube. Thus, AtTPK4 represents a member of plant tandem-pore-K+ channels, resembling the characteristics of its animal counterparts as well as plant-specific features with respect to modulation of channel activity by acidosis and calcium

We present results of physical experiments where we measure the autocorrelation function (ACF) and the spectral linewidth of the basic frequency of a spiral chaotic attractor in a generator with inertial nonlinearity both without and in the presence of external noise. It is shown that the ACF of spiral attractors decays according to an exponential law with a decrement which is defined by the phase diffusion coefficient. It is also established that the evolution of the instantaneous phase can be approximated by a Wiener random process
Hypertensive pregnancy disorders are a leading cause of perinatal and maternal morbidity and mortality. Heart rate variability (HRV), blood pressure variability (BPV), and baroreflex sensitivity (BRS) are relevant predictors of cardiovascular risk in humans. The aim of the study was to evaluate whether HRV, BPV, and BRS differ between distinct hypertensive pregnancy disorders. Continuous heart rate and blood pressure recordings were performed in 80 healthy pregnant women as controls (CON), 19 with chronic hypertension (CH), 18 with pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH), and 44 with pre-eclampsia (PE). The data were assessed by time and frequency domain analysis, nonlinear dynamics, and BRS. BPV is markedly altered in all three groups with hypertensive disorders compared to healthy pregnancies, whereby changes were most pronounced in PE patients. Interestingly, this increase in PE patients did not lead to elevated spontaneous baroreflex events, while BPV changes in both the other hypertensive groups were paralleled by alterations in baroreflex parameters. The HRV is unaltered in CH and PE but significantly impaired in PIH. We conclude that parameters of the HRV, BPV, and BRS differ between various hypertensive pregnancy disorders. Thus, distinct clinical manifestations of hypertension in pregnancy have different pathophysiological, regulatory, and compensatory mechanisms
We consider the dynamics of the lowest order transversal vibration mode of a suspension bridge, for which the hangers are treated as one-sided springs, according to the model of Lazer and McKeena [SIAM Review 58, 1990, 537]. We analyze in particular the multi-stability of periodic attractors and the basin of attraction structure in phase space and its dependence with the model parameters. The parameter values used in numerical simulations have been estimated from a number of bridges built in the United States and in the United Kingdom, thus taking into account realistic, yet sometimes simplified, structural, aerodynamical, and physical considerations
Zur Erfassung und Bewertung des Landschaftsbildes in der Eingriffsregelung gibt es im Straßenbau mittlerweile ein breites Spektrum an Leitfäden und planerischen Grundlagen. Als mit Problemen behaftet erweist sich jedoch häufig die darauf aufbauende, auf konkrete Beeinträchtigungen Bezug nehmende Ableitung von Maßnahmen. Vor diesem Hintergrund hatte ein vom Bundesamt für Naturschutz beauftragtes FuE-Vorhaben (JESSEL et al. 2003) die Aufgabe, am Beispiel linienförmiger Verkehrsvorhaben des Bundes (Straße und Schiene) Hinweise zu erarbeiten, wie konkrete Vorkehrungen zur Vermeidung und Minderung von Beeinträchtigungen des Landschaftsbildes sowie umsetzungsorientierte Maßnahmen zu seiner landschaftsgerechten Wiederherstellung und Neugestaltung begründet werden können. Berücksichtigt wurden insbesondere die neuen rahmenrechtlichen Vorgaben des zum 04.04.2002 novellierten Bundesnaturschutzgesetzes (im Folgenden: BNatSchG 2002). Des Weiteren wurden exemplarische Nachkontrollen zum Landschaftsbild durchgeführt, um Empfehlungen abzuleiten wie die spezifischen Belange dieses Schutzguts bei derartigen Überprüfungen zu berücksichtigen sind. The road construction sector in Germany already has a large number of guidelines and legal planning principles that govern the collection of landscape data and landscape evaluation for the German Impact Regulation. However, deriving measures that are both based on these guidelines and principles, and take concrete interference into account often prove problematic. In view of this fact, the German Federal Agency for Nature Conservation commissioned a research project that could be used to justify concrete precautionary measures that seek to avoid and reduce interference in the landscape, and implementation-oriented measures for landscape-friendly restauration and rearrangement. The project was based on the Federal Government's transport plans for the road and rail sector. It focussed in particular on the new legal standards set out in the Federal Nature Conservation Act that was amended on 4.4.2002. In addition, exemplary follow-up checks on the landscape were made with the aim of formulating recommendations as to how the specific needs of the landcape can be taken into account when carrying out such assessments.
A close comparison of selected parts of the translation of the Venerable Bede's 'Historia Ecclesiastica gentis anglorum' into Old English and Old Irish reveals how selective the translators proceeded in their translation work and how they adapted the Latin original to the genre traditions of their vernacular styles of writing. By their omissions, their choices of lexis and syntax they clearly expressed their translation interests. Part of the differences also seems to have been motivated by the targeted written and the oral mode of communication. While the Irish translation is entirely written in character and hardly lends itself to reading out aloud ('prelecting'), the style and rhythm of the Old English translation suggests that it was to serve public reading purposes in front of illiterate or semi-literate listening audiences.

Binucleating aza-sulfonate and aza-sulfinate macrocycles : Synthesis and coordination chemistry

The preparation and ligating properties of S-oxygenated derivatives of a macrobinucleating hexaazadithiophenolate macrocycle H2L1 of the Robson type towards nickel(II) and zinc(II) ions are reported. Nickel complexes of the hexaazadiphenylsulfonate ligand (L-2)(2-)[(L-2)Ni-2(II)(mu-L)](+)(L = m-Cl-OBz(-) (3), Cl- (4) and OAc- (6)] are readily obtained in high yields by oxidation of the respective [(L-1)Ni-2(II)(mu-L)](+) parent complexes [L = m- Cl-OBz- (2), Cl- (1), OAc- (5)] with meta-chloroperoxybenzoic acid or hydrogen peroxide. Decomposition of the sulfonate complexes gives the free macrocycle H2L2 which, upon treatment with Zn(OAc)(2)(.)2H(2)O, produces the diamagnetic zinc complex [(L-2)Z(2)(II)(OAc)](+) (8). A dinuclear Cu-II complex of the hexaazadisulfinate derivative (L-3')(2-), [(L-3)CU2II](2+) (9), is formed rather unexpectedly by air oxidation of (L-1)(2-) in the presence of Cu-I. The crystal- structure determinations of the perchlorate or tetraphenylborate salts of 2, 3, and 4 show that the new ligands support the formation of binuclear complexes with bowl-shaped, calixarene-like binding cavities. NMR spectroscopic studies of 8 show that the complexes retain their solid-state structures in solution. A crystal-structure determination of 9 reveals two five-coordinate Cu-II ions bridged by the two sulfinate functions of (L-3)(2-)
Biomass size spectra collate structural and functional attributes of plankton communities enabling standardised temporal and cross-system comparisons and may be rapidly obtained by automated particle counters. To examine how differences in plankton communities from highly eutrophic and more oligotrophic lakes are reflected in size spectra, a three-year time series of biomass size spectra was established for polymictic, eutrophic Lake Müggelsee, based on approximately weekly sampling and microscopic enumeration. The continuous but often bumpy size spectra reflected appropriately the seasonal and trophy-related variations in the plankton composition and growth conditions and the potential impact of daphnids on smaller plankton. We tested the hypothesis that more diverse plankton communities have smoother size spectra than impoverished ones. The spectra of L. Müggelsee and other more less eutrophic lakes covaried roughly with the functional diversity in total plankton composition but were unrelated to taxonomical diversity within the phyto- or mesozooplankton. The slopes of the normalised size spectra of Lake Müggelsee were generally more negative than -1, exhibited a recurrent seasonal pattern, and were strongly correlated with crustacean biomass. In contrast to less eutrophic systems, slopes could not be used to quantify energy fluxes within the foodweb due to highly variable algal P/B ratios and frequently bumpy size distributions. The latter indicated stronger deviations from the ideal concept of a steady energy flow along the size gradient than found in e. g. large, mesotrophic Lake Constance.

We propose two methods that reduce the post-nonlinear blind source separation problem (PNL-BSS) to a linear BSS problem. The first method is based on the concept of maximal correlation: we apply the alternating conditional expectation (ACE) algorithm-a powerful technique from nonparametric statistics-to approximately invert the componentwise nonlinear functions. The second method is a Gaussianizing transformation, which is motivated by the fact that linearly mixed signals before nonlinear transformation are approximately Gaussian distributed. This heuristic, but simple and efficient procedure works as good as the ACE method. Using the framework provided by ACE, convergence can be proven. The optimal transformations obtained by ACE coincide with the sought-after inverse functions of the nonlinearitics. After equalizing the nonlinearities, temporal decorrelation separation (TDSEP) allows us to recover the source signals. Numerical simulations testing "ACE-TD" and "Gauss-TD" on realistic examples are performed with excellent results
Recently blind source separation (BSS) methods have been highly successful when applied to biomedical data. This paper reviews the concept of BSS and demonstrates its usefulness in the context of event-related MEG measurements. In a first experiment we apply BSS to artifact identification of raw MEG data and discuss how the quality of the resulting independent component projections can be evaluated. The second part of our study considers averaged data of event-related magnetic fields. Here, it is particularly important to monitor and thus avoid possible overfitting due to limited sample size. A stability assessment of the BSS decomposition allows to solve this task and an additional grouping of the BSS components reveals interesting structure, that could ultimately be used for gaining a better physiological modeling of the data
Noninvasive electroencephalogram (EEG) recordings provide for easy and safe access to human neocortical processes which can be exploited for a brain-computer interface (BCI). At present, however, the use of BCIs is severely limited by low bit-transfer rates. We systematically analyze and develop two recent concepts, both capable of enhancing the information gain from multichannel scalp EEG recordings: 1) the combination of classifiers, each specifically tailored for different physiological phenomena, e.g., slow cortical potential shifts, such as the premovement Bereitschaftspotential or differences in spatio-spectral distributions of brain activity (i.e., focal event-related desynchronizations) and 2) behavioral paradigms inducing the subjects to generate one out of several brain states (multiclass approach) which all bare a distinctive spatio-temporal signature well discriminable in the standard scalp EEG. We derive information-theoretic predictions and demonstrate their relevance in experimental data. We will show that a suitably arranged interaction between these concepts can significantly boost BCI performances
Parametrices of elliptic boundary value problems for differential operators belong to an algebra of pseudodifferential operators with the transmission property at the boundary. However, generically, smooth symbols on a manifold with boundary do not have this property, and several interesting applications require a corresponding more general calculus. We introduce here a new algebra of boundary value problems that contains Shapiro-Lopatinskij elliptic as well as global projection conditions; the latter ones are necessary, if an analogue of the Atiyah-Bott obstruction does not vanish. We show that every elliptic operator admits (up to a stabilisation) elliptic conditions of that kind. Corresponding boundary value problems are then Fredholm in adequate scales of spaces. Da die Schriftstellerin eine wichtige Rolle im Literaturbetrieb der DDR spielte, vermittelt der Band auch ein lebendiges Bild der 50er bis 70er Jahre. Von privaten Schnappschüsen bis zu künstlerischen Fotos reichen die weitgehend unbekannten Fotos, die von z.T. bekannten, aber auch unbekannten Texten der Autorin begleitet werden.

Carotenoids are important micronutrients in the human diet and are present in human serum at micromolar concentrations. In addition to their antioxidant potential, carotenoids obtain physiologically relevant properties such as influencing cellular signal pathways, gene expression or induction of detoxifying enzymes. In this study, we determined the transactivation of PXR by cotransfection with the full-length receptor and a PXR-responsive reporter gene. Carotenoids and retinol revealed a 5-6-fold reporter gene activity in HepG2 cells in comparison to a 7-fold induction by the well known PXR agonist rifampicin whereas apo-carotenals and lycopene exerted less or no activation potential. The inductive efficacy was hereby concentration-dependent. In addition, carotenoid or retinol mediated gene expression of PXR responsive genes like CYP3A4/CYP3A7, CYP3A5, MDR-1 and MRP-2 has been determined in HepG2 cells by RT- PCR with upregulative properties of beta-carotene or retinol being comparable or even higher than that of rifampicin. In conclusion, PXR-mediated upregulation of CYP3A4/CYP3A7 and CYP3A5 as well as MDR1 and MRP2 by carotenoids points to a potential interference on the metabolism of xenobiotic and endogenous relevant compounds

The electronic and geometric structure, stability and molecular properties of the cationic van-der-Waals complex Ar2H+ in its ground electronic state are studied by means of two ab-initio quantum-chemical approaches: conventional configuration interaction (multi-reference and coupled cluster methods) and a diatomics-in-molecules model with ab-initio input data.
We study the possibility of chaotic dynamics in the externally driven Droop model. This model describes a phytoplankton population in a chemostat under periodic supply of nutrients. Previously it has been proven under very general assumptions that such systems are not able to exhibit chaotic dynamics. Here we show that the simple introduction of algal mortality may lead to chaotic oscillations of algal density in the forced chemostat. Our numerical simulations show that the existence of chaos is intimately related to plankton overshooting in the unforced model. We provide a simple measure, based on stability analysis, for estimating the amount of overshooting. These findings are not restricted to the Droop model but hold also for other chemostat models with mortality. Our results suggest periodically driven chemostats as a simple model system for the experimental verification of chaos in ecology.

Glucose dehydrogenase (GDH) was assembled electrostatically onto QCM-gold electrodes by their sequential deposition with anionic polyelectrolytes such as PSS and PASA. For the layer-by-layer arrangements both the microgravimetric and the electrochemical sensor signal were followed. Increasing amounts of GDH were deposited by stepwise formation of alternating layers of GDH and PSS or PASA. The mass increase was about 1.88 mug/cm(2) for one GDH/ PASA bilayer and 2.4 mug/cm(2) for a GDH/PSS bilayer. The addition of phenolic compounds resulted in an oxidation current, which could be catalytically increased by the GDH catalysed reaction in the presence of glucose. The system functions as glucose sensor when quinones are present in nonlimiting amount. The amperometric response was already diffusion limited when a single layer of GDH was adsorbed. The sensor sensitivity increased by a factor of 10 when MSA was used instead of MUA as initial electrode modifier
The presence of partially folded intermediates along the folding funnel of proteins has been suggested to be a signature of potentially aggregating systems. Many studies have concluded that metastable, highly flexible intermediates are the basic elements of the aggregation process. In a previous paper, we demonstrated how the choice between aggregation and folding behavior was influenced by hydrophobicity distribution patterning along the sequence, as quantified by recurrence quantification analysis (RQA) of the Myiazawa-Jernigan coded primary structures. In the present paper, we tried to unify the "partially folded intermediate" and "hydrophobicity/charge" models of protein aggregation verifying the ability of an empirical relation, developed for rationalizing the effect of different mutations on aggregation propensity of acyl-phosphatase and based on the combination of hydrophobicity RQA and charge descriptors, to discriminate in a statistically significant way two different protein populations: (a) proteins that fold by a process passing by partially folded intermediates and (b) proteins that do not present partially folded intermediates
Cross-sections for ground and excited state absorptions of the charge transfer system 3-(3-tert- butoxycarbonylamino-propyl)-4'-pyren-1-yl-biphenyl-2,5-dicarbo xylicacid dimethyl ester (Py-C) are determined from nonlinear absorption and fluorescence measurements as a function of solvent. During 1987-1998, the ciliates and their prey and predator communities in large, deep, mesotrophic Lake Constance were intensively studied as it underwent re-oligotrophication. Ciliate biomass exhibited the bimodal seasonal distribution typical for meso-eutrophic lakes, with high biomass in spring and summer and low biomass in winter and during the clear-water phase. Cluster analysis produced nine groups of temporally co-occurring ciliate morphotypes with potentially similar ecological characteristics. The clusters exhibited a larger seasonality than found in the size distribution, showing that similarly-sized ciliates had seasonally compensatory dynamics. Ciliate biomass declined by approx. 30 % during the 12 years of study, i.e. considerably less than daphnids (and total phosphorus). This yielded a significant increase in the ratio between summer ciliate and daphnid biomass as re-oligotrophication progressed, in contrast to previous studies. Few indications for a mechanistic link between phosphorus concentrations (which declined threefold during the study period) and ciliate biomass or community composition via group-specific food concentrations were found. The relative contribution of three of the nine clusters changed as re-oligotrophication progressed. Ciliate size distribution was related to reoligotrophication and daphnid biomass in summer. The smallest and largest ciliates gained in importance when daphnids decreased whereas large ciliates declined. Overall, summer daphnid biomas had a greater predictive power for attributes of the ciliate community than the other factors studied (phosphorus, prey biomass, copepod biomass). The extent of bottom-up and top-down control of ciliates appeared to be time and group specific. Overall, the ciliate community exhibited remarkably recurrent seasonal patterns despite major alternations in abiotic and biotic conditions.
Along the Southern Himalayan Front (SHF), areas with concentrated precipitation coincide with rapid exhumation, as indicated by young mineral cooling ages. Twenty new, young ( < 1-5 Ma) apatite fission track (AFT) ages have been obtained from the Himalayan Crystalline Core along the Sutlej Valley, NW India. The AFT ages correlate with elevation, but show no spatial relationship to tectonic structures, such as the Main Central Thrust or the Southern Tibetan Fault System. Monsoonal precipitation in this region exerts a strong influence on erosional surface processes. Fluvial erosional unloading along the SHF is focused on high mountainous areas, where the orographic barrier forces out > 80% of the annual precipitation. AFT cooling ages reveal a coincidence between rapid erosion and exhumation that is focused in a similar to 50-70-km-wide sector of the Himalaya, rather than encompassing the entire orogen. Assuming simplified constant exhumation rates, the rocks of two age vs. elevation transects were exhumed at similar to 1.4 +/- 0.2 and similar to 1.1 +/- 0.4 mm/a with an average cooling rate of similar to 40-50degreesC/Ma during Pliocene-Quarternary time. Following other recently published hypotheses regarding the relation between tectonics and climate in the Himalaya, we suggest that this concentrated loss of material was accommodated by motion along a back-stepping thrust to the south and a normal fault zone to the north as part of an extruding wedge. Climatically controlled erosional processes focus on this wedge and suggest that climatically controlled surface processes determine tectonic deformation in the internal part of the Himalaya. The first IMPI (inhibitor of metalloproteinases from insects) was identified in the greater wax moth, Galleria mellonella [Wedde, Weise, Kopacek, Franke and Vilcinskas (1998) Eur. J. Biochem. 255, 535-543]. Here we report cloning and expression of a cDNA coding for this IMPI. The IMPI mRNA was identified among the induced transcripts from a subtractive and suppressive PCR analysis after bacterial challenge of G. mellonella larvae. Induced expression of the IMPI during a Immoral immune response was confirmed by real-time PCR, which documented up to 500 times higher amounts of IMPI mRNA in immunized larvae in comparison with untreated ones. The IMPI sequence shares no similarity with those of tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases or other natural inhibitors of metalloproteinases, and the recombinant IMPI specifically inhibits thermolysin-like metalloproteinases, but not matrix metalloproteinases. These results support the hypothesis that the IMPI represents a novel type of immune-related protein which is induced and processed during the G. mellonella humoral immune response to inactivate pathogen-associated thermolysin-like metalloproteinases
The displacement histories of the San Jacinto and southernmost San Andreas fault zones are constrained by offset data with ages in the range of 5 Ma to 5 ka. Apparent discrepancies between long- and short-term average displacement rates can be reconciled with a time-variable rate model. In this model, the displacement rate on the San Andreas decelerated from similar to35 mm/yr at 1.5 Ma to as low as 9 +/- 4 mm/yr by 90 ka. Over this same time period, the rate on the San Jacinto fault zone accelerated from an initial value of zero to a rate of 26 +/- 4 mm/yr. The data also imply that the rate of the San Andreas fault accelerated since ca. 90 ka, from similar to9 mm/yr to the modern rate of 27 +/- 4 mm/yr, whereas the San Jacinto decelerated from 26 +/- 4 mm/yr to the modern rate of 8 +/- 4 mm/yr. The time scale of these changes is significantly longer than the earthquake cycle, but shorter than time scales characteristic of lithospheric-scalle dynamics. The emergence of the San Jacinto fault zone ca. 1.5 Ma coincided with the development of a major restraining bend in the San Andreas fault zone, suggesting that the formation of new subparallell faults could be driven by conditions that inhibit displacement on preexisting faults
Collaborative Engineering is a promising concept to increase the competitiveness of companies. Target of this paper is to describe the industrial application of this approach, considering shipbuilding as an example. Besides the engineering partners needs to collaborate during the product development phase, there are many other stakeholders who are interested in the product ship along its whole life cycle. Therefore the Concept of Collaborative Engineering is extended by introducing the idea of Communities. Requirements on Communities in Engineering are deduced. Based on this an architectural framework for Collaborative Engineering Communities is described. Concluding research topics which have to be discussed for practical realization are outlined.
We present the results from a study of the host galaxies of 15 optically selected active galactic nuclei (AGNs) with 0.5<z<1.1 from the Galaxy Evolution from Morphology and SEDs project (GEMS). GEMS is a Hubble Space Telescope imaging survey of a similar to28' x 28' contiguous field centered on the Chandra Deep Field-South in the F606W and F850LP filter bands. It incorporates the spectral energy distributions and redshifts of similar to10,000 objects, obtained by the COMBO-17 project. We have detected the host galaxies of all 15 AGNs in the F850LP band (and 13 of 15 in the F606W band), recovering their fluxes, morphologies, and structural parameters. We find that 80% of the host galaxies have early-type (bulge-dominated) morphologies, while the rest have structures characteristic of late-type (disk-dominated) galaxies. We find that 25% of the early types and 30% of the late types exhibit disturbances consistent with galaxy interactions. The hosts show a wide range of colors, from those of red-sequence galaxies to blue colors consistent with ongoing star formation. Roughly 70% of the morphologically early-type hosts have rest-frame blue colors, a much larger fraction than those typical of nonactive morphologically early-type galaxies in this redshift and luminosity range. Yet, we find that the early-type hosts are structurally similar to red-sequence elliptical galaxies, inasmuch as they follow an absolute magnitude versus half-light size correlation that is consistent with the mean relation for early-type galaxies at similar redshifts
Two columnar phases forming 2,4,6-triarylamino-1,3,5-triazines have been investigated in binary mixtures with calamitic and non-liquid crystalline benzoic acids carrying one or two alkoxy chains at the aromatic core. The triazines form hydrogen bonded aggregates with the complementary acids. Each investigated equimolar mixture exhibits a columnar mesophase due to segregation of the H-bonded polar core region from the lipophilic aliphatic molecular segments. The cross sectional shape of cylindrical aggregates and, therefore, the two-dimensional lattice symmetries, hexagonal or rectangular, are defined by the number of alkoxy chains of the benzoic acid component
The in vitro superoxide scavenging activity (as determined by electrochemical measurement) and the in vivo antioxidant potential (as determined by a mouse model of carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) hepatotoxicity) of methanolic extracts prepared from 10 Chinese tonifying herbs were compared. Electrochemical measurement using a cytochrome c (Cyt. c) sensor showed that all of the tested herbal extracts exhibited a medium superoxide scavenging activity of different potency, as indicated by their IC50 values. The in vivo measurement demonstrated that 80% of the herbal extracts displayed in vivo antioxidant potential, as assessed by the percentage of protection of the activity of plasma alanine aminotransferases and the hepatic glutathione regeneration capacity under CCl4-intoxicated condition. Although the in vitro antioxidant activity did not correlate quantitatively with the in vivo antioxidant potential, for 8 out of 10 samples a similar tendency was found. The rapid amperometric assessment of antioxidant potential by Cyt. c sensor may offer a convenient and direct method for screening as well as the quality control of herbal products. Three diatomite beds exposed in the Ol Njorowa Gorge south of Lake Naivasha, Central Kenya Rift, document three major lake-level highstands between 175 and 60 kyr BP. Diatom transfer-function estimates of hydrological and hydrochemical parameters suggest that a deep and large freshwater lake existed during the highstands at 135 and 80 kyr BP. In contrast, a shallower but more expanded freshwater lake existed at 110 kyr BP. The best analog for the most extreme highstand at 135 kyr BP is the highstand during the Early Holocene humid period from 10 to 6 kyr BP. The environmental conditions as reconstructed from diatom assemblages suggest long-lasting episodes of increased humidity during the high lake periods. This contrasts to the modern situation with a relatively shallow Lake Naivasha characterized by rapid water level fluctuations within a few decades. The most likely cause for the variable hydrological conditions since 175 kyr BP is orbitally driven insolation changes on the equator and increased lateral moisture transport from the ocean.
We investigate several problems in entanglement theory from the perspective of convex optimization. This list of problems comprises (A) the decision whether a state is multiparty entangled, (B) the minimization of expectation values of entanglement witnesses with respect to pure product states, (C) the closely related evaluation of the geometric measure of entanglement to quantify pure multiparty entanglement, (D) the test whether states are multiparty entangled on the basis of witnesses based on second moments and on the basis of linear entropic criteria, and (E) the evaluation of instances of maximal output purities of quantum channels. We show that these problems can be formulated as certain optimization problems: as polynomially constrained problems employing polynomials of degree 3 or less. We then apply very recently established known methods from the theory of semidefinite relaxations to the formulated optimization problems. By this construction we arrive at a hierarchy of efficiently solvable approximations to the solution, approximating the exact solution as closely as desired, in a way that is asymptotically complete. For example, this results in a hierarchy of efficiently decidable sufficient criteria for multiparticle entanglement, such that every entangled state will necessarily be detected in some step of the hierarchy. Finally, we present numerical examples to demonstrate the practical accessibility of this approach
During reading, our eyes perform complicated sequences of fixations on words. Stochastic models of eye movement control suggest that this seemingly erratic behaviour can be attributed to noise in the oculomotor system and random fluctuations in lexical processing. Here, we present a qualitative analysis of a recently published dynamical model [Engbert et al., 2002] and propose that deterministic nonlinear control accounts for much of the observed complexity of eye movement patterns during reading. Based on a symbolic coding technique we analyze robust statistical features of simulated fixation sequences
We present a comprehensive study of the Magellanic Cloud planetary nebula SMP 61 and of its nucleus, a Wolf- Rayet type star classified [WC 5-6]. The observational material consists of HST STIS spectroscopy and imaging, together with optical and UV spectroscopic data collected from the literature and infrared fluxes measured by IRAS. We have performed a detailed spectral analysis of the central star, using the Potsdam code for expanding atmospheres in non-LTE. For the central star we determine the following parameters: L-star = 10(3.96) L-., R-star = 0.42 R-., T-star = 87.5 kK, (M) over dot = 10(-6.12) M-. yr(-1), v(infinity) = 1400 km s(-1), and a clumping factor of D = 4. The elemental abundances by mass are X-He = 0.45, X-C = 0.52, X-N < 5 x 10(-5), X-O = 0.03, and X-Fe < 1 x 10(-4). The fluxes from the model stellar atmosphere were used to compute photoionization models of the nebula. All the available observations, within their error bars, were used to constrain these models. We find that the ionizing fluxes predicted by the stellar model are consistent with the fluxes needed by the photoionization model to reproduce the nebular emission, within the error margins. However, there are indications that the stellar model overestimates the number and hardness of Lyman continuum photons. The photoionization models imply a clumped density structure of the nebular material. The observed C III] lambda1909/C II lambda4267 line ratio implies the existence of carbon-rich clumps in the nebula. Such clumps are likely produced by stellar wind ejecta, possibly mixed with the nebular material. We discuss our results with regard to the stellar and nebular post-AGB evolution. The observed Fe-deficiency for the central star indicates that the material which is now visible on the stellar surface has been exposed to s-process nucleosynthesis during previous thermal pulses. The absence of nitrogen allows us to set an upper limit to the remaining H-envelope mass after a possible AGB final thermal pulse. Finally, we infer from the total amount of carbon detected in the nebula that the strong [WC] mass- loss may have been active only for a limited period during the post-AGB evolution
