Wodurch zeichnen sich die besten ERP-Systeme aus? Diese Frage wird dem Autor dieses Beitrags immer wieder gestellt. Mit der Vorstellung der Balanced ERP Scorecard (BESC) besteht nun eine Möglichkeit, ein System aus verschiedenen Perspektiven zu bewerten und so individuell zu einer Einschätzung des für eine konkrete Unternehmenssituation besten Systems zu gelangen. Daher beschreibt dieser Beitrag zunächst die Perspektiven der BESC und dann mögliche Kriterien für eine Ausgestaltung dieser Scorecard.
Industry 4.0, i.e. the connection of cyber-physical systems via the Internet in production and logistics, leads to considerable changes in the socio-technical system of the factory. The effects range from a considerable need for further training, which is exacerbated by the current shortage of skilled workers, to an opening of the previously inaccessible boundaries of the factory to third-party access, an increasing merging of office IT and manufacturing IT, and a new understanding of what machines can do with their data. This results in new requirements for the modeling, analysis and design of information processing and performance mapping business processes.
In the past, procedures were developed under the name of “process-oriented knowledge management” with which the exchange and use of knowledge in business processes could be represented, analyzed and improved. However, these approaches were limited to the office environment. A method that makes it possible to document, analyze and jointly optimize the new possibilities of knowledge processing by using artificial intelligence and machine learning in production and logistics in the same way and in a manner compatible with the approach in the office environment does not exist so far. The extension of the modeling language KMDL, which is described in this paper, will contribute to close this research gap.
This paper describes first approaches for an analysis and design method for a knowledge management integrating man and machine in the age of Industry 4.0.
Process models are the basic ingredient for many attempts to improve business processes. The graphical depiction of otherwise not observable behavior in an enterprise is one of the most important techniques in the digital society. They help to enable decision making in the design of processes and workflows. Nevertheless it is not easy to correctly model business processes. Some approaches try to detect errors by an automated analysis of the process model. This contribution focuses on the creation of the first model from scratch. Which errors occur most frequently and how can these be avoided?

Jetzt intelligent aus der Krise heraus starten! Der Anlauf von Neuprodukten und der jetzt notwendige Wiederanlauf nach der Corona-Krise haben einige Gemeinsamkeiten: In beiden Fällen muss vorsichtig vorgegangen werden, es muss eine hohe Wandlungsfähigkeit und Anpassungsfähigkeit aufrechterhalten werden, um schnell auf eine Veränderung der Situation reagieren zu können und es werden geeignete Werkzeuge und Prognoseverfahren benötigt, um sich die Auswirkungen von geplanten Schritten vorher verdeutlichen zu können. Das vorliegende Herausgeberwerk wurde zusammengestellt, um Expertenwissen für die Praxis nutzbar zu machen. Die über 30 Aufsätze in diesem Werk dienen dem Ziel, das Thema „Wiederanlauf nach der Krise“ aus allen wichtigen Blickwinkeln zu beleuchten und alle relevanten Branchen zu berücksichtigen. Nach der Darstellung allgemeiner Prinzipien des Wiederanlaufs werden Methoden und Werkzeuge vorgestellt, bevor dann Spezika einzelner Branchen diskutiert werden. Im Vordergrund steht dabei die international vernetzte Automobilindustrie sowie die globalen Lieferketten. Weitere Branchen wie die Elektronikfertigung und die Herstellung von Konsumgütern werden ebenfalls besprochen. Zielgruppe dieses Werkes sind vor allem diejenigen, die jetzt den Wiederanlauf von Produktionssystemen nach der drastischen Reduzierung durch das neuartige Corona-Virus planen, vorbereiten und umsetzen.
Umstieg auf S/4HANA

Sehr viele langjährige R/3-Nutzer stehen derzeit vor der Frage, wie sie sich hinsichtlich des Upgrades auf S/4HANA entscheiden sollen. Die Wartung für R/3 endet absehbar in den nächsten Jahren, und mit S/4 kommen neue Möglichkeiten, aber auch neue Herausforderungen. Dieser Beitrag beschreibt die Entscheidungen, die bei der Prüfung eines Umstiegs auf S/4HANA getroffen werden müssen und zeigt diese am Beispiel eines Multi-Channel-Handelsunternehmens.

Immer mehr Konzepte versprechen die Digitale Fabrik, die Industrie 4.0-Fabrik, die Smart Factory usw. Allen ist gemeinsam, dass dahinter der erheblich ausgeweitete Einsatz von vernetzter Software steht. Allein der Begriff Fabriksoftware selbst ist noch nicht definiert bzw. gegenüber nahestehenden Begriffen abgegrenzt. Der vorliegende Beitrag stellt dazu einen für Forschung und Praxis tauglichen Ansatz zur Einordnung von Software in Fertigung und Logistik vor.

Sehr spannend ist z. B. die Bandbreite der Antworten, mit der ERP-Berater den Nutzen von ERP bei der ERP-Auswahl bewerten. Auch Auswahlportale stoßen nicht überall auf große Gegenliebe. Existing factories face multiple problems due to their hierarchical structure of decision making and control. Cyber-physical systems principally allow to increase the degree of autonomy to new heights. But which degree of autonomy is really useful and beneficiary? This paper differentiates diverse definitions of autonomy and approaches to determine them. Some experimental findings in a lab environment help to answer the question raised in this paper.

Real options are widely applied in strategic and operational decision-making, allowing for managerial flexibility in uncertain contexts. Increased scholarly interest has led to an extensive but fragmented research landscape. We aim to measure and systematize the research field quantitatively. To achieve this goal, we conduct bibliometric performance analyses and bibliographic coupling analyses with an in-depth content review. The results of the performance analyses show an increasing interest in real options since the beginning of the 2000s and identity the most influential journals and authors. The science mappings reveal six and seven research clusters over the last two decades. Based on an in-depth analysis of their themes, we develop a research framework comprising antecedents, application areas, internal and external contingencies, and uncertainty resolution through real option valuation or reasoning. We identify several gaps in that framework, which we propose to tackle in future research.

Virtual reality can have advantages for education and learning. However, it must be adequately designed so that the learner benefits from the technological possibilities. Understanding the underlying effects of the virtual learning environment and the learner’s prior experience with virtual reality or prior knowledge of the content is necessary to design a proper virtual learning environment. This article presents a pre-study testing the design of a virtual learning environment for engineering vocational training courses. In the pre-study, 12 employees of two companies joined the training course in one of the two degrees of immersion (desktop VR and VR HMD). Quantitative results on learning success, cognitive load, usability, and motivation and qualitative learning process data were presented. The qualitative data assessment shows that overall, the employees were satisfied with the learning environment regardless of the level of immersion and that the participants asked for more guidance and structure accompanying the learning process. Further research is needed to test for solid group differences.
With the latest technological developments and associated new possibilities in teaching, the personalisation of learning is gaining more and more importance. It assumes that individual learning experiences and results could generally be improved when personal learning preferences are considered. To do justice to the complexity of the personalisation possibilities of teaching and learning processes, we illustrate the components of learning and teaching in the digital environment and their interdependencies in an initial model. Furthermore, in a pre-study, we investigate the relationships between the learner's ability to (digital) self-organise, the learner’s prior- knowledge learning in different variants of mode and learning outcomes as one part of this model. With this pre-study, we are taking the first step towards a holistic model of teaching and learning in digital environments.
Research on corporate entrepreneurship—venturing activities by established corporations—has received increasing scholarly attention. We employ bibliometric methods to analyze the literature on corporate entrepreneurship published over the last five decades. Based on the results of citation and co-citation analyses, we reveal central works in the field and how they are interconnected. We investigate the underlying intellectual structure of the field. Our findings provide evidence of the growing maturity and interdisciplinarity of corporate entrepreneurship and provide insight into research themes. We find that resource-based view and its extensions still remain the predominant theoretical perspectives in the field. Drawing on these findings, we suggest directions for future research.
In times of digitalization, the collection and modeling of business processes is still a challenge for companies. The demand for trustworthy process models that reflect the actual execution steps therefore increases. The respective kinds of processes significantly determine both, business process analysis and the conception of future target processes and they are the starting point for any kind of change initiatives. Existing approaches to model as-is processes, like process mining, are exclusively focused on reconstruction. Therefore, transactional protocols and limited data from a single application system are used. Heterogeneous application landscapes and business processes that are executed across multiple application systems, on the contrary, are one of the main challenges in process mining research. Using RFID technology is hence one approach to close the existing gap between different application systems. This paper focuses on methods for data collection from real world objects via RFID technology and possible combinations with application data (process mining) in order to realize a cross system mining approach.
Focusing on the passive use of Instagram, we apply the affordance perspective to deeply explore its use and use-related outcomes. In the qualitative study, we uncover the affordances of focal social media features. Two distinct groups of affordances (self- and others-oriented) emerge. Following the grounded theory methodology, we develop the affordances-actualizations-outcomes model, explaining how immediate goals associated with features translate into outcomes. In the quantitative study, we test the model by applying structural equation modeling. Our findings confirm that actualizations of self- and others-oriented affordances are associated with distinct outcomes: social connectedness, positive affect, and overall satisfaction with Instagram experience.
Although prior research has shown that reward provision might sometimes increase creativity, little is known about how leadership that clarifies effort-reward contingencies (i.e., contingent reward leadership) is related to team creativity. Drawing on the theory of learned industriousness, we argue that contingent reward leadership can enhance team knowledge exchange and, in turn, team creative performance. However, we propose that this relationship is moderated by leader unpredictability, which can create uncertainty about resource allocation, thereby undermining the otherwise positive effect of contingent reward leadership. In a two-source, lagged design (three-wave) field study with data from 60 organizational teams, we found a conditional indirect (moderated mediation) effect of contingent reward leadership on team creative performance through team knowledge exchange. This conditional indirect effect was positive when leader unpredictability was low, and negative when leader unpredictability was high. Our research provides leaders with clear and actionable advice by showing that contingent reward leadership promotes team creative performance only when leaders act in predictable and consistent ways.

Purpose
This paper aims to formulate the most probable future scenario for the accommodation sharing sector within the next five to ten years. It addresses the following six thematic aspects: relevance, different forms of accommodation sharing, users, hosts, platforms, and finally, industry regulation.
Design/methodology/approach
This study identifies the most likely holistic future scenario by conducting a two-stage Delphi study involving 59 expert panelists. It addresses 33 projections for six thematic sections of the accommodation sharing industry: relevance, different forms of accommodation sharing, users, hosts, platforms, and finally, industry regulation.
Findings
The results indicate that the number of shared accommodations and users of home-sharing will increase. Moreover, the cost advantage is the predominant driver for users to engage in the accommodation sharing segment, and for the hosts, the generation of an extra income is the primary incentive. Finally, the regulation within this industry is expected to be more effective in the foreseeable future.
Practical implications
The results are critical, not only to advance our theoretical understanding and stimulate critical discussions on the long-term development of accommodation sharing but also to assist governments and policymakers who have an interest in developing and regulating this sector and developers seeking business opportunities.
Originality/value
While there is ample knowledge about the past and current development of accommodation sharing in tourism, little is understood about its potential future development and implications for consumers, the economy, and society. To date, no scientific research is available that develops scenarios about the future of accommodation sharing.

In this study, we contribute to the scholarly conversation on firm-level business model changes following a neoconfigurational approach. By exploring configurations of business model changes over time, we add the direction of business model changes—namely business model convergence or divergence—as a vital avenue to the business model innovation literature. We identify necessary business model convergence and divergence recipes in a sample of N = 217 strategic dyadic alliances. Firstly, technological proximity emerges as a single pre-condition to both converging and diverging business models. Secondly, business models between competitors either converge through complementarities or tend not to change relative to each other. Thirdly, equity participation enables business model divergence through co-specialization. We conclude with a discussion of business model trajectories and future research directions.
Federal Administration

The federal administration is significantly small (around 10 percent of all public employees). This speciality of the German administrative system is based on the division of responsibilities: the central (federal) level drafts and adopts most of the laws and public programmes, and the state level (together with the municipal level) implements them. The administration of the federal level comprises the ministries, subordinated agencies for special and selected operational tasks (e.g. the authorisation of drugs, information security and registration of refugees) in distinct administrative sectors (e.g. foreign service, armed forces and federal police). The capacity for preparing and monitoring government bills and statutory instruments is well developed. Moreover, the instruments and tools of coordination are exemplary compared with other countries, although the recent digital turn has been adopted less advanced than elsewhere.
Strategic social media use positively influences organizational goals such as the long-term accrual of social capital, and thus social media information governance has become an increasingly important organizational objective. It is particularly important for humanitarian nongovernmental organizations (HNGOs), whose work relies on accurate and timely information regarding socially altruistic behavior (donations, volunteerism, etc.). Despite the potential of social media for increasing social capital, tensions in governing social media information across an organization's different operational levels (regional, intermediate, and national) pose a difficult challenge. Prominent governance frameworks offer little guidance, as their focus on control and incremental policymaking is largely incompatible with the processes, roles, standards, and metrics needed for managing self-governing social media. This study offers a notion of dynamic and co-evolutionary process management of multi-level organizations as a means of conceptualizing social media information governance for the accrual of organizational social capital. Based on interviews with members of HNGOs, this study reveals tensions that emerge within eight focus areas of accruing social capital in multi-level organizations, explains how dynamic process management can ease those tensions, and proposes corresponding strategy recommendations.
This article examines public service resilience during the COVID-19 pandemic and studies the switch to telework due to social distancing measures. We argue that the pandemic and related policies led to increasing demands on public organisations and their employees. Following the job demands-resources model, we argue that resilience only can arise in the presence of resources for buffering these demands. Survey data were collected from 1,189 German public employees, 380 participants were included for analysis. The results suggest that the public service was resilient against the crisis and that the shift to telework was not as demanding as expected.
Das Arbeiten im Homeoffice war in der deutschen öffentlichen Verwaltung vor der Covid-19 Pandemie kein verbreitetes Arbeitsmodell. Mit der Pandemie änderte sich die Situation unerwartet und womöglich auch nachhaltig. Vor dem Hintergrund unterschiedlicher Erfahrungen ist die Frage nicht mehr ob, sondern wie zukünftig in der Verwaltung mobil, flexibel und dezentral sowie in virtuellen Teams gearbeitet werden kann und soll. Dieser Beitrag untersucht diese Konzepte genauer, veranschaulicht deren praktische Anwendung und erörtert entsprechende Perspektiven für das zukünftige Arbeiten im öffentlichen Dienst.
Digitale Transparenz

Transparenz ist kein neuer Begriff, sondern im Zusammenhang mit Rechtsstaatlichkeit, Gewaltenteilung oder Demokratie schon lange Gegenstand politischer Theorie und Praxis. Transparenz bedeutet, dass Akteure, wie etwa Verwaltungsorganisationen, relevante Informationen über ihre Entscheidungsprozesse, Funktionsweisen und Performanz gegenüber externen Akteuren offenlegen. Für politische und Verwaltungsakteure gewinnt Transparenz im Zuge der Digitalisierung an zusätzlicher Bedeutung. Moderne Informations- und Kommunikationstechnologien vereinfachen Transparenzschaffung, sowohl in der Geschwindigkeit als auch im Ressourceneinsatz. Sie können so zu neuen Formen und einer neuen Qualität von Transparenz in Politik und Verwaltung beitragen. Transparenz- und Datenportale oder Bürgerhaushalte sind digitale Instrumente, die diesem Zweck dienen sollen. Ob digitale Transparenz politische und administrative Prozesse tatsächlich effizienter, effektiver und durchsichtiger macht und Bürger*innen diese dadurch besser verstehen, ist jedoch eine offene Frage.
This study examines whether incentives affect public employees' intention to share knowledge. Tested incentives satisfy needs for either achievement or appreciation. Both treatments were tested on implicit as well as explicit knowledge sharing. A 2 x 3 factorial survey experiment was designed to observe within-person and between-person effects. Data were collected from public employees in the core administration and healthcare sector (n = 623) in 2018. The analysis indicates that both treatments positively affect knowledge-sharing intention if it is explicit knowledge that ought to be shared. However, no effects of either treatment can be found in either type of knowledge sharing. No negative effect of the tested incentives on knowledge sharing was observed. Hence, incentives might not harm knowledge sharing but also do not pay off in organizational practice. In contrast to these motivation-enhancing human resource practices, ability and opportunity-enhancing practices should be tested to foster knowledge sharing.
This dissertation examines the activity of knowledge sharing by public employees in the workplace. Building on the Rubicon model of human behavior formation, I use a threefold approach to analyze the knowledge-sharing process: public employees’ motivation to share knowledge, their intention to share, and knowledge sharing behavior as such. The first article maps the knowledge-sharing behavior of public employees. It builds a typology of behavioral patterns and shows that public employees mainly share their knowledge responsively and directly with a knowledge receiver rather than an information medium. The second article elaborates on the construct of knowledge-sharing motivation and develops a scale to measure this kind of work motivation in a selective and domain-specific way. Data from three studies indicate three dimensions of knowledge-sharing motivation, namely appreciation, growth and altruism, and tangible rewards. Based on these dimensions, the third article analyzes whether the satisfaction of public employees’ underlying needs can foster ther knowledge-sharing intention. The study indicates that both tested treatments (appreciation by co-workers, benefits in a performance appraisal) positively affect knowledge-sharing intention if it is explicit knowledge that ought to be shared. However, no effects of either treatment can be found if implicit knowledge is shared. Hence, to foster sharing of explicit knowledge, the analyzed motivation-enhancing rewards can be used in public management practice. To enhance implicit knowledge sharing, ability- and opportunity-enhancing management instruments are discussed. All in all, this dissertation integrates a micro-level perspective on human knowledge sharing into a meso-level perspective on organizational knowledge management. It adds to the literature on workplace behaviors of public employees and knowledge management and aims to incorporate knowledge sharing and management into the public administration and management literature.
Opportunity recognition

This paper provides an overview of the ever-increasing literature on opportunity recognition, with a focus on its antecedents and determinants. With a two-step research approach, a bibliometric analysis and a systematic literature review, we structure the current research in this field. By using bibliometric techniques, we analyzed 161 publications and, consequently, clustered the 30 most influential references. Apart from economic theories and the role of opportunity recognition in entrepreneurship, a strong research focus is on antecedents of opportunity recognition. Therefore, in our subsequent literature review, we focus on determinants which influence opportunity recognition. We find that the opportunity recognition process is influenced by various personal, organizational and environmental factors. We conclude with a research outlook for future research opportunities on opportunity recognition.
Sharing economy

The sharing economy has received increased attention in entrepreneurship research, resulting in a complex research landscape that is hard to overlook. Using a bibliometric analysis, we aim to further synthesise the field by: 1) summarising the most important definitions given by extant literature to capture the common understanding of the sharing economy; 2) identifying three thematic clusters based on the top 20 most cited publications; 3) conducting a citation analysis to show interdependencies between all authors; and 4) identifying the research methods used in the SE publications. Our results show: 1) many definitions with different emphases; 2) conceptualisation, collaborative consumption/ownership and the disruptive character of the sharing economy as three dominant research clusters; 3) a fairly even citation practice allowing for unbiased future research; and 4) that conceptual publications and quantitative as well as qualitative studies are fairly evenly published.
E-Mail tracking uses personalized links and pictures for gathering information on user behavior, for example, where, when, on what kind of device, and how often an e-mail has been read. This information can be very useful for marketing purposes. On the other hand, privacy and security requirements of customers could be violated by tracking. This paper examines how e-mail tracking works, how it can be detected automatically, and to what extent it is used in German e-commerce. We develop a detection model and software tool in order to collect and analyze more than 600 newsletter e-mails from companies of several different industries. The results show that the usage of e-mail tracking in Germany is prevalent but also varies depending on the industry.
E-mail tracking provides companies with fine-grained behavioral data about e-mail recipients, which can be a threat for individual privacy and enterprise security. This problem is especially severe since e-mail tracking techniques often gather data without the informed consent of the recipients. So far e-mail recipients lack a reliable protection mechanism.
This article presents a novel protection framework against e-mail tracking that closes an impor- tant gap in the field of enterprise security and privacy-enhancing technologies. We conceptualize, implement and evaluate an anti-tracking mail server that is capable of identifying tracking images in e-mails via machine learning with very high accuracy, and can selectively replace them with arbitrary images containing warning messages for the recipient. Our mail protection framework implements a selective prevention strategy as enterprise-grade software using the design science research paradigm. It is flexibly extensible, highly scalable, and ready to be applied under actual production conditions. Experimental evaluations show that these goals are achieved through solid software design, adoption of recent technologies and the creation of novel flexible software components.
We investigate how the design of audit processes influences employees’ reporting decisions. We focus specifically on detective employee audits for which several employees are randomly selected after a defined period to audit their ex-post behavior. We investigate two design features of the audit process, namely, employee anonymity and process transparency, and analyze their impact on misreporting. Overall, we find that both components influence the extent of individuals’ misreporting. A nonanonymous audit decreases performance misreporting more than an audit in which the employee remains anonymous. Furthermore, the high incidence of performance misreporting in the case of anonymous audits can be decreased when the process transparency is low. Thus, our study informs accountants about how the two design features of employee anonymity and transparency of the audit process can be used to constrain performance misreporting to increase the efficiency of audits
Doing good by doing bad

This study investigates how tone at the top, implemented by top management, and tone at the bottom, in an employee’s immediate work environment, determine noncompliance. We focus on the disallowed actions of employees that improve their own and, in turn, the company’s performance, referred to as performance-improving noncompliant behavior (PINC behavior). We conduct a survey of German sales employees to investigate specifically how, on the one hand, (1) corporate rules and (2) performance pressure, both implemented by top management, and, on the other hand, (3) others’ PINC expectations and (4) others’ PINC behavior, both arising from the employee’s immediate work environment, influence PINC behavior. When considered in isolation, we find that corporate rules, as top management’s main instrument to guide employee behavior, decrease employee PINC behavior. However, this effect is negatively influenced by the employees’ immediate work environment when employees are expected to engage in PINC or when others engage in PINC. In contrast, even though top management places great performance pressure on employees, that by itself does not increase PINC behavior. Overall, our study informs practitioners and researchers about whether and how the four determinants increase or decrease employees’ PINC behavior, which is important to comprehend triggers and to counteract such misconduct.
Multiplexity, the coexistence of more than one type of relationship between two actors, is a prevalent phenomenon with clear relevance for a wide range of management settings and phenomena. While there is a substantial body of work on multiplexity, the absence of a shared terminology and a typology for the mechanisms and arguments that are used in theorizing about its implications nevertheless hamper its appeal to organizational network scholars and slow its progress. Based on content analysis of 103 studies, we propose “relational harmony,” “task complementarity,” and “relational scope” as three categories to integrate the mechanisms and arguments used in the literature to theorize about the implications of multiplexity. We then survey the literature in light of this typology to show how it is also useful in revealing patterns of theorizing; for example, with respect to the types of relationships that are studied in relation to multiplexity. We conclude with suggestions for future research directions, focusing on how these can be pursued based on our integrative typology. We hope that the common ground we provide for theorizing about the implications of multiplexity will make it an even more engaging topic for organizational network and management scholars, and place it in the company of more prominently used relational constructs in management research, as aligned with its prevalence and relevance.

Web tracking seems to become ubiquitous in online business and leads to increased privacy concerns of users. This paper provides an overview over the current state of the art of web-tracking research, aiming to reveal the relevance and methodologies of this research area and creates a foundation for future work. In particular, this study addresses the following research questions: What methods are followed? What results have been achieved so far? What are potential future research areas? For these goals, a structured literature review based upon an established methodological framework is conducted. The identified articles are investigated with respect to the applied research methodologies and the aspects of web tracking they emphasize.

Blockchain has the potential to change business transactions to a major extent. Thereby, underlying consensus algorithms are the core mechanism to achieve consistency in distributed infrastructures. Their application aims for transparency and accountability in societal transactions. As a result of missing reviews holistically covering consensus algorithms, we aim to (1) identify prevalent consensus algorithms for public blockchains, and (2) address the resource perspective with a sustainability consideration (whereby we address the three spheres of sustainability). Our systematic literature review identified 33 different consensus algorithms for public blockchains. Our contribution is twofold: first, we provide a systematic summary of consensus algorithms for public blockchains derived from the scientific literature as well as real-world applications and systemize them according to their research focus; second, we assess the sustainability of consensus algorithms using a representative sample and thereby highlight the gaps in literature to address the holistic sustainability of consensus algorithms.
Neben dem enormen Kursanstieg des Bitcoins in den Jahren 2017/2018, stieg im gleichen Maß auch die benötigte Rechenleistung und der damit verbundene Elektrizitätsbedarf, um Blöcke innerhalb der Bitcoin-Blockchain zu verifizieren. Aus diesem Problem ableitend beschäftigt sich dieser Beitrag mit der Fragestellung, welchen Beitrag unterschiedliche Konsens-Algorithmen innerhalb einer Blockchain zur Nachhaltigkeit liefern. Im Ergebnis liegt ein Überblick über die meist genutzten Konsens-Algorithmen und deren Beitrag zur Nachhaltigkeit vor.

Im Vergleich mit dem Privatsektor weist die öffentliche Verwaltung eine stark erhöhte Krankenstandsquote auf. Psychische Erkrankungen, welche in den letzten 12 Jahren massiv zugenommen haben, spielen dabei eine herausragende Rolle. Im Allgemeinen wird dies auf eine gesteigerte Arbeitsbelastung (z.B. in Folge des Personalmangels) zurückgeführt. Das Projekt „Stress-Test Sozialamt. Psychische Belastungen in der Sozialverwaltung“ soll dazu beitragen, die Verwaltungs-BürgerInnen-Interaktion näher zu beleuchten und den Blick auf Anforderungen und Konsequenzen für die Beteiligten vor allem im Hinblick auf das persönliche Stressniveau und die psychosoziale Gesundheit zu richten. Untersucht wurden Faktoren, die die psychische Gesundheit von VerwaltungsmitarbeiterInnen und das Verhalten von BürgerInnen in Interaktionen mit der Verwaltung darstellen sowie deren wechselseitigen Effekte zueinander. Das verwendete theoretische Modell geht davon aus, dass Stress dann auftritt, wenn (berufliche) Anforderungen (z.B. Arbeitsumfang) und Ressourcen (z.B. Unterstützung durch KollegInnen) nicht im Gleichgewicht stehen. Gerade bei langfristigem Missverhältnis ohne konstruktive Lösungsstrategie kann dies negative Folgen auf die individuelle Gesundheit nehmen.Mittels Multimethoden-Ansatz wurden Ergebnisse aus verschiedenen Quellen trianguliert und umfassend erfasst. Basis der Datenerhebung bildeten ExpertInnen-Interviews mit Mitarbeitenden und Führungskräften der teilnehmenden Sozialämter. Darauf aufbauend fanden teilnehmende Beobachtungen vor Ort und Befragungen von KundInnen und Mitarbeitenden per Kurzfragebögen nach direkten Interaktionen während der Sprechzeiten statt. Als letzter Schritt wurde schließlich eine Gesamtbefragung aller Mitarbeitenden der teilnehmenden Sozialämter durchgeführt. Aufgrund der Corona-Pandemie erfolgte letztere jedoch verzögert.
Die erhobenen Daten lassen auf ein heterogenes Stressbild der Mitarbeitenden schließen, wobei deutliche Ausschläge am oberen Ende der Skala zu verzeichnen sind. Ein Teil der Belegschaft ist demnach überdurchschnittlich gestresst. Zwar führt Stress nicht unmittelbar zur Beeinträchtigung der Leistungsfähigkeit. Ein dauerhaft erhöhtes Niveau zieht jedoch gesundheitliche wie psychische Folgen nach sich. Die hohe Stressbelastung lässt sich aufgrund der hier durchgeführten Datenerhebung im Wesentlichen auf hohe Arbeitsanforderungen zurückführen, was eine dauerhafte Belastung darstellen könnte. Weitere Stressquellen ergeben sich aus den hohen psychologischen Anforderungen der Arbeit, der eigentlichen Interaktion mit BürgerInnen sowie in Teilen einer unzureichenden Attraktivität des Arbeitsplatzes (z.B. durch fehlende Sauberkeit, Lärmbelästigung etc.). Aufgrund dieser Schlussfolgerungen wird daher empfohlen, aktives Gesundheitsmanagement und Sportkurse in den Ämtern auszubauen. Weiterhin sollte die gegenseitige und professionelle Supervision intensiviert werden. Um die Personalsituation zu verbessern, müssen Personalanwerbung und Einstellungsprozesse auf den Prüfstand gestellt werden. Weiterhin gilt es, die allgemeine Attraktivität des Arbeitsplatzes zu erhöhen, indem Großraumbüros in Bereichen mit KundInnenkontakt vermieden, technische Ausstattung und räumliche Begebenheiten verbessert werden. Nicht zuletzt müssen Amtsleitung und Führungskräfte informellen Austausch stärken und fördern sowie organisationale Lernprozesse ausbauen und etablieren.
Gravitating exogenous shocks to the next normal through entrepreneurial coopetive interactions

Purpose: Entrepreneurship can be viewed as an individual or group pursuit of market opportunities irrespective of the context. But when an exogenous shock alters and permanently alters the known normal, entrepreneurs can do no more than cope with the immediate impact. Covid-19 changed the normal for every-one, and the current study aims to analyse how the pandemic changed the context and entrepreneurial perspective of business owners geographically located in different cultural environments. Various experiences impacted them as they tried to navigate and mitigate the effects of the crisis on the wider economy and their business. We seek to identify the probable relevant entrepreneurial configurations in which one or more combinations of antecedent conditions are needed to cause entrepreneurs to adapt their behavior in order to increase their coopetitive interactions further, to mitigate the effects of the crisis.Originality: To the best of our knowledge, this is the first empirical study to address an entrepreneurial phenomenon using an integrative approach using PLS-SEM and fsQCA as separate prediction-oriented methods in order to validate the proposed conceptual model and to create a preliminary scaffolding for building the Theory of Unplanned Behavior in a crisis context.

Wesenskern der Verwaltungswissenschaft ist nach wie vor die Frage nach Dysfunktionalitäten bürokratischer Organisationen. Schwerfälligkeit durch überbordende Bürokratie wird in der Forschung hierbei als Red Tape bezeichnet. Aufgrund der relationalen Beschaffenheit ist die Frage weniger, was alles Red Tape ist, sondern vielmehr wie Verwaltungsmitarbeitende mit Red Tape umgehen. Diese Arbeit soll dazu beitragen, Bewältigungsstrategien, auch Coping genannt, bezogen auf Red Tape zu verstehen. Mittels Survey-Experiment wird untersucht, inwieweit die individuelle Bewältigungsstrategie durch die Form (analog/digital), über die Red Tape transportiert wird, und den Ursprung (intern/extern), von dem Red Tape ausgeht, beeinflusst wird. Die Ergebnisse zeigen unter Berücksichtigung des transaktionalen Stressmodells von Lazarus und Folkman, dass Mitarbeitende der Verwaltung insbesondere dann aktive Bewältigungsstrategien auswählen, wenn diese durch externe Quellen hervorgerufen wird und zudem analog vorliegt.
Mehr als 15 Jahre, nachdem eine neue digitale Post-NPM Ära ausgerufen wurde, fehlt es der Digitalisierungsforschung weiterhin an Tiefe. Während interne Prozesse und Verfahren oft unbeachtet blieben, lag der Fokus in der Vergangenheit auf der Untersuchung digitaler Dienstleistungen an der Schnittstelle zwischen Verwaltung und Bürger. Um Forschung in diesem Bereich zu konsolidieren, schlägt dieser Debattenbeitrag vor, klassische Ansätze für die Digitalisierungsforschung „fit“ zu machen. Anschließend sollten Effekte der Digitalisierung, insbesondere auf die Effizienz von Organisationen (auch negative Auswirkungen z.B. durch Digital Red Tape), innerhalb der Verwaltung analysiert werden. Dafür muss jedoch beantwortet werden, wie Digitalisierung gemessen und operationalisiert werden kann.
Chinas neuer langer Marsch

During the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, many people shared their symptoms across Online Social Networks (OSNs) like Twitter, hoping for others’ advice or moral support. Prior studies have shown that those who disclose health-related information across OSNs often tend to regret it and delete their publications afterwards. Hence, deleted posts containing sensitive data can be seen as manifestations of online regrets. In this work, we present an analysis of deleted content on Twitter during the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. For this, we collected more than 3.67 million tweets describing COVID-19 symptoms (e.g., fever, cough, and fatigue) posted between January and April 2020. We observed that around 24% of the tweets containing personal pronouns were deleted either by their authors or by the platform after one year.
As a practical application of the resulting dataset, we explored its suitability for the automatic classification of regrettable content on Twitter.
Das Ziel der vorliegenden Dissertation war es herauszuarbeiten, ob Nachhaltigkeitsbewusstsein den Konsum von Luxusgütern beeinflusst und ob verschiedene Moderatoren einen Einfluss auf diesen Zusammenhang ausüben. Das Nachhaltigkeitsbewusstsein wurde dabei basierend auf dem von Balderjahn et al. (2013) entwickelten Consciousness-for-sustainable-consumption-Modell durch die ökologische, soziale und die ökonomische Nachhaltigkeit sowie ergänzend durch das Tierschutzbewusstsein und Bewusstsein für lokale Produktion repräsentiert. Als Moderatoren dienten das Streben nach sozialer Anerkennung und Prestige, Materialismus, Hedonismus und Traditionsbewusstsein. Für die Aufdeckung möglicher Zusammenhänge zwischen den verschiedenen Dimensionen der Nachhaltigkeit und Luxuskonsum wurde eine Prädiktorenanalyse durchgeführt. Moderatorenanalysen offenbarten zusätzlich, ob ein Einfluss der verschiedenen Moderatoren auf die einzelnen Zusammenhänge vorlag. Die Untersuchung zeigte, dass jeweils das Umweltbewusstsein, das Bewusstsein für genügsamen Konsum sowie das Bewusstsein für schuldenfreien Konsum als Teil der ökonomischen Nachhaltigkeit und das Tierschutzbewusstsein einen Einfluss auf den Luxuskonsum ausüben. Darüber hinaus konnten insgesamt sieben Einflüsse durch die verschiedenen Moderatorvariablen auf die unterschiedlichen Zusammenhänge zwischen den Nachhaltigkeitsdimensionen und Luxuskonsum aufgedeckt werden.
Business incubators hatch start-ups, helping them to survive their early stage and to create a solid foundation for sustainable growth by providing services and access to knowledge. The great practical relevance led to a strong interest of researchers and a high output of scholarly publications, which made the field complex and scattered. To organize the research on incubators and provide a systematic overview of the field, we conducted bibliometric performance analyses and science mappings. The performance analyses depict the temporal development of the number of incubator publications and their citations, the most cited and most productive journals, countries, and authors, and the 20 most cited articles. The author keyword co-occurrence analysis distinguishes six, and the bibliographic coupling seven research themes. Based on a content analysis of the science mappings, we propose a research framework for future research on business incubators.
Digital transformation (DT) is a major challenge for traditional companies. Despite the term, DT is relatively new; its substance is not: a whole stream of research has examined the relationship between DT and firm performance with contradictory findings. Most of these studies have chosen a linear correlational approach, however, did not analyze the holistic interplay of DT dimensions, leading to firm performance. This applies especially to the mature financial services industry and the future perspectives of traditional financial service providers (FSP). Hence, it remains an open question for both research and practice what DT configurations have a positive impact on firm performance. Against this background, the aim of this exploratory study is to examine how DT dimensions are systemically connected to firm performance of incumbent FSP. Drawing on a qualitative-empirical research approach with case data from 83 FSP, we identify digital configurations along different levels of firm performance. Our findings suggest an evolution of digital configurations of FSP, leading to five empirical standard types from which only one managed to establish a profound basis of DT.
The paper argues that non-circulating tokens should be used as an alternative to money in a socialist economy. These tokens would be used to distribute consumer products out of socialised production to individual consumers. Like modern fiat money, these tokens are a kind of IOU. But unlike money, these tokens are not intended to facilitate the private exchange of commodities. Marx’s proposal to eventually abolish a token-based lower phase of communism in favour of a distinct higher phase is rejected because the ‘needs principle’ of the higher phase can be sufficiently realised within the token system. It is further shown that the prices of items should not be tied to the socially necessary labour time needed to produce them. Instead, prices should be regulated towards market clearing rates.
Entrepreneurial failure

Although entrepreneurial failure (EF) is a fairly recent topic in entrepreneurship literature, the number of publications has been growing dynamically and particularly rapidly. Our systematic review maps and integrates the research on EF based on a multi-method approach to give structure and consistency to this fragmented field of research. The results reveal that the field revolves around six thematic clusters of EF: 1) Soft underpinnings of EF, 2) Contextuality of EF, 3) Perception of EF, 4) Two-sided effects of EF, 5) Multi-stage EF effects, and 6) Institutional drivers of EF. An integrative framework of the positive and negative effects of entrepreneurial failure is proposed, and a research agenda is suggested.
Worth the pain?

How do exporting firms react to sanctions? Specifically, which firms are willing — or capable — to serve the market of a sanctioned country? We investigate this question for four sanctions episodes using monthly data on the universe of French exporting firms. We draw on recent econometric advances in the estimation of dynamic fixed effects binary choice models. We find that the introduction of new sanctions in Iran and Russia significantly lowered firm-level probabilities of serving these sanctioned markets, while the (temporary) lifting of the U.S. sanctions on Cuba and the removal of sanctions against Myanmar had no or only small trade-inducing effects, respectively. Additionally, the impact of sanctions is very heterogeneous along firm dimensions and by case particularities. Firms that depend more on trade finance instruments are more strongly affected, while prior experience in the sanctioned country considerably softens the blow of sanctions, and firms can be partly immune to the sanctions effect if they are specialized in serving “crisis countries”. Finally, we find suggestive evidence for sanctions avoidance by exporting indirectly via neighboring countries.
Intrinsic motivation is widely considered essential to creativity because it facilitates more divergent thinking during problem solving. However, we argue that intrinsic motivation has been theorized too heavily as a unitary construct, overlooking various internal factors of a task that can shape the baseline level of intrinsic motivation people have for working on the task. Drawing on theories of cognitive styles, we develop a new scale that measures individual preferences for three different creative thinking styles that we call divergent thinking, bricoleurgent thinking, and emergent thinking. Through a multi-study approach consisting of exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, and convergent validity, we provide psychometric evidence showing that people can have distinct preferences for each cognitive process when generating ideas. Furthermore, when validating this scale through an experiment, we find that each style becomes more dominant in predicting overall enjoyment, engagement, and creativity based on different underlying structures of a task. Therefore, this paper makes both theoretical and empirical contributions to literature by unpacking intrinsic motivation, showing how the alignment between different creative thinking styles and task can be essential to predicting intrinsic motivation, thus reversing the direction of causality between the motivational and cognitive components of creativity typically assumed in literature.
Artificial intelligence (AI)-based technologies can increasingly perform knowledge work tasks, such as medical diagnosis. Thereby, it is expected that humans will not be replaced by AI but work closely with AI-based technology (“augmentation”). Augmentation has ethical implications for humans (e.g., impact on autonomy, opportunities to flourish through work), thus, developers and managers of AI-based technology have a responsibility to anticipate and mitigate risks to human workers. However, doing so can be difficult as AI encompasses a wide range of technologies, some of which enable fundamentally new forms of interaction. In this research-in-progress paper, we propose the development of a taxonomy to categorize unique characteristics of AI-based technology that influence the interaction and have ethical implications for human workers. The completed taxonomy will support researchers in forming cumulative knowledge on the ethical implications of augmentation and assist practitioners in the ethical design and management of AI-based technology in knowledge work.
While a growing body of literature finds positive impacts of Start-Up Subsidies (SUS) on labor market outcomes of participants, little is known about how the design of these programs shapes their effectiveness and hence how to improve policy. As experimental variation in program design is unavailable, we exploit the 2011 reform of the current German SUS program for the unemployed which strengthened caseworkers' discretionary power, increased entry requirements and reduced monetary support. We estimate the impact of the reform on the program's effectiveness using samples of participants and non-participants from before and after the reform. To control for time-constant unobserved heterogeneity as well as differential selection patterns based on observable characteristics over time, we combine Difference-in-Differences with inverse probability weighting using covariate balancing propensity scores. Holding participants' observed characteristics as well as macroeconomic conditions constant, the results suggest that the reform was successful in raising employment effects on average. As these findings may be contaminated by changes in selection patterns based on unobserved characteristics, we assess our results using simulation-based sensitivity analyses and find that our estimates are highly robust to changes in unobserved characteristics. Hence, the reform most likely had a positive impact on the effectiveness of the program, suggesting that increasing entry requirements and reducing support increased the program's impacts while reducing the cost per participant. We assess the short-term employment effects of the introduction of a national statutory minimum wage in Germany in 2015. For this purpose, we exploit variation in the regional treatment intensity, assuming that the stronger a minimum wage ‘bites’ into the regional wage distribution, the stronger the regional labour market will be affected. In contrast to previous studies, we construct two regional bite indicators based upon detailed individual wage data from the Structure of Earnings Survey (SES) 2014 and combine it with administrative information on regional employment. Moreover, using the Socio-Economic Panel (SOEP), we are able to affirm the absence of anticipation effects and verify the assumption of a common trend in wages before the reform. In sum, we find only moderate negative effects on overall employment of about 140,000 (0.4%) jobs, which are mainly driven by a sharp decline of marginal employment (‘mini-jobs’), while we do not find pronounced significant effects for regular employment in most specifications. Our results are robust to a variety of sensitivity tests.
Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems are critical to the success of enterprises, facilitating business operations through standardized digital processes. However, existing ERP systems are unsuitable for startups and small and medium-sized enterprises that grow quickly and require adaptable solutions with low barriers to entry. Drawing upon 15 explorative interviews with industry experts, we examine the challenges of current ERP systems using the task technology fit theory across companies of varying sizes. We describe high entry barriers, high costs of implementing implicit processes, and insufficient interoperability of already employed tools. We present a vision of a future business process platform based on three enablers: Business processes as first-class entities, semantic data and processes, and cloud-native elasticity and high availability. We discuss how these enablers address current ERP systems' challenges and how they may be used for research on the next generation of business software for tomorrow's enterprises.
Scholars have argued that visionary leadership is an effective tool to motivate followers because it provides them with meaning and purpose. However, previous research tells us little about which leaders and under which circumstances leaders engage in visionary leadership. We draw on theories of human and social capital to argue that leader work centrality is an important antecedent of visionary leadership, and especially so for leaders with low organizational tenure. Moreover, we propose that visionary leadership then provides followers with meaningfulness and thereby decreases their turnover intentions. Our predictions were confirmed by data from a two-wave, lagged-design field study with 101 leader-follower dyads. Overall, our research identifies an important antecedent of visionary leadership, a specific situation in which this antecedent is particularly important, and provides empirical evidence for why visionary leadership can bind followers to an organization.
Navigating the unknown

Visionary leadership is considered to be one of the most important elements of effective leadership. Among other things, it is related to followers' perceived meaningfulness of their work. However, little is known about whether uncertainty in the workplace affects visionary leadership's effects. Given that uncertainty is rising in many, if not most, workplaces, it is vital to understand whether this development influences the extent to which visionary leadership is associated with followers' perceived meaningfulness. In a two-source, lagged design field study of 258 leader-follower dyads from different settings, we show that uncertainty moderates the relation between visionary leadership and followers' perceived meaningfulness such that this relation is more strongly positive when uncertainty is high, rather than low. Moreover, we show that with increasing uncertainty, visionary leadership is more negatively related to followers' turnover intentions via perceived meaningfulness. This research broadens our understanding of how visionary leadership may be a particularly potent tool in times of increasing uncertainty.
Die Arbeit ist ein Beitrag zu einer grundlegenden Diskussion der Kapitalmarktforschung, dem messbaren Erfolg „aktiver vs. passiver“ Investmentstrategien. Der Autor setzt sich kritisch mit den wesentlichen Anlagestrategien und Modellen für Indexprodukte auseinander und beleuchtet zugleich Closet Indexing bei aktiv gemanagten Investmentfonds. Das Ergebnis zeigt, dass Closet Indexing nicht nur sporadisch auftritt, sondern eine weit verbreitete Anlagestrategie in vielen vermeintlich aktiv gemanagten Aktieninvestmentfonds ist.
Digital transformation fundamentally changes the way individuals conduct work in organisations. In accordance with this statement, prevalent literature understands digital workplace transformation as a second-order effect of implementing new information technology to increase organisational effectiveness or reach other strategic goals. This paper, in contrast, provides empirical evidence from two remote-first organisations that undergo a proactive rather than reactive digital workplace transformation. The analysis of these cases suggests that new ways of working can be the consequence of an identity change that is a precondition for introducing new information technology rather than its outcome. The resulting process model contributes a competing argument to the existing debate in digital transformation literature. Instead of issuing digital workplace transformation as a deliverable of technological progress and strategic goals, this paper supports a notion of digital workplace transformation that serves a desired identity based on work preferences.
Organizations frequently try to incentivize employees to develop highly creative solutions. In this study, we examine self-set salaries as a specific type of incentive design. We investigate whether self-set salaries affect employees’ motivation and overall (creative) performance. Moreover, because self-set salaries potentially risk opportunistic employee behavior, we consider the effect of the observability of peer performance on employees’ level of self-set salaries. Using a laboratory experiment, we hold the average employee compensation constant and demonstrate that, in comparison with fixed-pay contracts, self-set salaries increase the quantitative performance in creative tasks without affecting the average creativity. However, we do not find significant differences between the amount of individuals’ self-set salaries with observability of peer performance and the amount for individuals without the chance to observe peer performance. Our findings are important for firms that rely on the development of creative ideas but are unsure about the effects of the introduction of self-set salaries
Invisible iterations: how formal and informal organization shape knowledge networks for coordination

This study takes a network approach to investigate coordination among knowledge workers as grounded in both formal and informal organization. We first derive hypotheses regarding patterns of knowledge-sharing relationships by which workers pass on and exchange tacit and codified knowledge within and across organizational hierarchies to address the challenges that underpin contemporary knowledge work. We use survey data and apply exponential random graph models to test our hypotheses. We then extend the quantitative network analysis with insights from qualitative interviews and demonstrate that the identified knowledge-sharing patterns are the micro-foundational traces of collective coordination resulting from two underlying coordination mechanisms which we label ‘invisible iterations’ and ‘bringing in the big guns’. These mechanisms and, by extension, the associated knowledge-sharing patterns enable knowledge workers to perform in a setting that is characterized by complexity, uncertainty and ambiguity. Our research contributes to theory on the interplay between formal and informal organization for coordination by showing how self-directed, informal action is supported by the formal organizational hierarchy. In doing so, it also extends understanding of the role that hierarchy plays for knowledge-intensive work. Finally, it establishes the collective need to coordinate work as a previously overlooked driver of knowledge network relationships and network patterns. © 2024 The Authors. The hospitality industry worldwide is among the hardest-hit industries from the COVID-19 lockdowns. Initial theoretical and practical observations in the hospitality industry indicate that business model innovation (BMI) might be a solution to recover from and successfully cope with the COVID-19 crisis. Interestingly, some firms in the hospitality industry already started to successfully adapt their business models. This study explores the why and how of these successful recovery attempts through BMI by conducting a multiple case study of six hospitality firms in Austria. We rely on interview data from managers together with one of their main stammgasts for each case, which we triangulate with secondary data for the analysis. Findings show that BMI is applied during and after the crisis to create new revenue streams and secure a higher level of liquidity, with an important role of stammgasts.
New technological applications such as Augmented Reality or Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) lead to alternative ways of learning. In order to be able to use this to its potential, the promotion of digital competencies “Digital Competence is the set of knowledge, skills, attitudes, abilities, strategies, and awareness that are required when using ICT and digital media to perform tasks; solve problems; communicate; manage information; collaborate; create and share content; and build knowledge effectively, efficiently, appropriately, critically, creatively, autonomously, flexibly, ethically, reflectively for work, le sure, participation, learning, and socialising.” (Ferrari, 2012). and a corresponding amount of practical "learning-by-doing" effects is required (cf. Ecker/Campbell 2019, p. 154). For this purpose, spaces and framework conditions must be created for application-based learning, which is also increasingly required by the employment market. In this context, we take a closer look at a new emerging subculture in university infrastructure called Maker Movement (MM). Our research work aims at investigating the pedagogical potential of particularly university-integrated makerspaces (MS) to enhance experiential learning with digital tools. To decode the innovative potential, we collected qualitative data from nine in-depth, semi-structured interviews with lab managers and researchers at European MS in six different countries.
Looking for participation

A stronger learner orientation through participatory learning increases learning motivation and results. But what does participatory learning mean? Where do learning factories and fabrication laboratories (FabLabs) stand in this context, and how can didactic implementation be improved in this respect? Using a newly developed analytical framework, which contains elements of the stage model of participation and general media didactics, we compare a FabLab and a learning factory example concerning the degree of participation. From this, we derive guidelines for designing participative teaching and learning processes in learning factories. We explain how FabLabs can be an inspiration for the didactic design of learning factories.
The rise of open source models for software and hardware development has catalyzed the debate regarding sustainable business models. Open Source Software has already become a dominant part in the software industry, whereas Open Source Hardware is still a little-researched phenomenon but has the potential to do the same to manufacturing in a wide range of products. This article addresses this potential by introducing a research design to analyze the prototyping phase of six different Open Source Hardware projects tackling ecological, social, and economical challenges. Using a design science research methodology, a process model is developed to concretise the prototype development steps. The prototype phase is important because it is where fundamental decisions are made that affect the openness of the final product. This paper aims to advance the discourse on open production as a concept that enables companies to apply the aspect of openness towards collaboration-oriented and sustainable business models.
A multidimensional and analytical perspective on Open Educational Practices in the 21st century

Participatory approaches to teaching and learning are experiencing a new lease on life in the 21st century as a result of the rapid technology development. Knowledge, practices, and tools can be shared across spatial and temporal boundaries in higher education by means of Open Educational Resources, Massive Open Online Courses, and open-source technologies. In this context, the Open Education Movement calls for new didactic approaches that encourage greater learner participation in formal higher education. Based on a representative literature review and focus group research, in this study an analytical framework was developed that enables researchers and practitioners to assess the form of participation in formal, collaborative teaching and learning practices. The analytical framework is focused on the micro-level of higher education, in particular on the interaction between students and lecturers when organizing the curriculum. For this purpose, the research reflects anew on the concept of participation, taking into account existing stage models for participation in the educational context. These are then brought together with the dimensions of teaching and learning processes, such as methods, objectives and content, etc. This paper aims to make a valuable contribution to the opening up of learning and teaching, and expands the discourse around possibilities for interpreting Open Educational Practices.
Our study applies legitimacy theorizing to service research, zooming in on co-prosumption service business models, which reside on significant direct contacts among provider-actors and customers as well as fellow customers in the service space. Our findings are based on a longitudinal flexible pattern matching method on 17 coworking spaces. The service cocreation nuances the double role of customers as evaluators and cocreators of legitimacy. This is because customers can have immediate perceptions of the actions and values of the services in their legitimacy evaluation while cocreating the service. Legitimacy shaped via social and recursive processes occurs in three stages: provisional, calibrated, and affirmed legitimacy. Findings inform four trajectory mechanisms of value-in-use pattern provenance, emergent Business Model development adaptive to the spatial context and loyal customers, visible trances as well as inside-out and outside-in identification processes. Further, the processes in the micro-ecosystem of an interstitial service space can develop a superordinate logic which overlays the potentially present coopetive and heterogenous institutional logics and interests of service customers.
Today, firms pursuing a pioneering strategy are often engaged in supply chain relationships to benefit from external resources and to improve their innovation. However, this effort can be impeded by power asymmetries in such relationships and especially by the execution of coercive power by their partner firm. Contracts could potentially reduce this risk of opportunistic behavior. Our survey study on 778 small to medium-sized enterprises in the European packaging and medical equipment industries examines how coercive power of the partner and the contractual arrangement between firms moderate the pioneering strategy's innovation outcomes in the short and long run. Our results confirm the negative effect of coercive power on innovation performance in both the short and long term. However, the compensating effect of rather complete contracts differs temporally. Whereas, contract completeness protects against higher dependence at the beginning of the collaboration, their effect diminishes over time. In contrast, rather incomplete contracts enhance the innovation performance in the long term, possibly complemented with trust.
Numerous studies show that high levels of Entrepreneurial Orientation (EO) in firms positively influence firm performance. Yet, high levels of Dark Triad (DT) traits - narcissism, Machiavellianism, and psychopathy - of managers might work detrimental to EO. Our study empirically tests if top managers who score high on Dark Triad traits have a negative influence on firm performance, reducing the merits of EO. Results of a survey study on 191 firms show that all three dimensions of the DT, narcissism, Machiavellianism, and psychopathy, suppress the positive effects that EO has on firm performance. Accordingly, selfish behaviour, emotional coldness, propensity for duplicity, and top managers' quest for self promotion, status, and dominance lead to behaviour that reduces the positive influences around innovativeness, proactiveness, and risk-taking of EO.
Technological developments such as Cloud Computing, the Internet of Things, Big Data and Artificial Intelligence continue to drive the digital transformation of business and society. With the advent of platform-based ecosystems and their potential to address complex challenges, there is a trend towards greater interconnectedness between different stakeholders to co-create services based on the provision and use of data. While previous research on digital transformation mainly focused on digital transformation within organizations, it is of growing importance to understand the implications for digital transformation on different layers (e.g., interorganizational cooperation and platform ecosystems). In particular, the conceptualization and implications of public data spaces and related ecosystems provide promising research opportunities. This special issue contains five papers on the topic of digital transformation and, with the editorial, further contributes by providing an initial conceptualization of public data spaces' potential to foster innovative progress and digital transformation from a management perspective.
This article explores the structural diversity of intraministerial organization over time. Based on organization theory, it proposes a generic typology for intraministerial units applicable to any hierarchically structured government organization. We empirically investigate the critical case of the German federal bureaucracy. By classifying its subunits, we analyze the longitudinal development of structural differentiation and its correspondence to denominational variety. The data stem from a novel international dataset, covering all ministries between 1980 and 2015. We find that intraministerial structure differentiates over time, across and within ministries. A stable core of traditional Weberian structure is complemented by structurally innovative intraministerial units. We conclude that the German federal bureaucracy is more diverse than suggested in previous literature. Our findings indicate that less Weberian bureaucracies are at least as structurally diverse and that more reform-driven bureaucracies will have experienced at least as many changes in structural diversity.

Mobile devices have become an integral part of everyday life due to
their portability. As literature shows, technology use is not only beneficial but also has dark sides, such as addiction. Parents face the need to balance perceived benefits and risks of children’s exposure to mobile technologies. However, no study has uncovered what kind of benefits and concerns parents consider when implementing technology-related rules. We built on qualitative responses of 300
parents of children aged two to thirteen to explore concerns about, and perceived benefits of children’s smartphone and tablet usage, as well as the rules parents have developed regarding technology use. Findings point to concerns regarding children’s development, as well as benefits for both children and parents, and ultimately to new insights about mobile technology mediation. These results provide practical guidance for parents, physicians and mobile industry
stakeholders, trying to ensure that children are acting responsibly with mobile technology.
While Information Systems Research exists at the individual and workgroup levels, research on IS at the enterprise level is less common. The potential synergies between the study of enterprise systems (ES) and related fields have been underexplored and often treated as separate entities. The ongoing challenge is to seamlessly integrate technological advances and align business processes across organizations. While systems integration within an organization is common, changes occur when industry and ecosystem perspectives come into play. The four selected papers address different facets of the future role of enterprise ecosystems, including implementation challenges, ecosystem boundaries, and B2B platform specifics.

In a highly competitive environment, differentiation through provided functionality is a key factor for browser platforms. As the development of browsers progress, new functions are constantly being released. Browsers could thus enter complementary markets by adding functionality previously provided by third-party extensions, which is referred to as ‘platform coring’. Previous studies have missed the perspective of the parties involved. To address this gap, we conducted interviews with third-party and core developers in the security and privacy domain from Firefox and Chrome. This study provides three contributions. First, insights into stakeholder-specific issues concerning coring. Second, measures to prevent coring. Third, strategical guidance for developers and owners. Third-party vendors experienced and core developers confirmed that coring occurs on browser platforms. While developers with extrinsic motivations assess coring negatively, developers with intrinsic motivations perceive coring positively.

Software platforms regularly introduce new features to remain competitive. While platform innovation is considered to be a critical success factor, adding certain features could hurt the ecosystem. If platform owners provide functionality that was previously provided by a contributor, the owners enter complementary product spaces. Complementary market entry frequently occurs on software platforms and is a major concern for third-party developers.
Divergent findings on the impact of complementary market entry call for the consideration of additional factors. As prior research neglected the third-party perspective, this contribution aims to address this gap. We explore the use of measures to prevent complementary market entry using a survey approach on browser platforms. The research model is tested with 655 responses among developer from Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome. To explain countermeasures employment, developer’s attitude and perceived likelihood are important. The results reveal that developers employ countermeasures if complementary market entry is assessed negatively and perceived as likely for their extension. Differences among browser platforms concerning complementary market entry are identified. Product spaces of extensions being available on multiple platforms are less likely to be entered and more heavily protected. Implications for research and stakeholders, i.e. platform owners and contributors are discussed.
Für die Wettbewerbsfähigkeit von Unternehmen hat der Kontinuierliche Verbesserungsprozess (KVP) eine hohe Bedeutung. Hinsichtlich der Qualität und Quantität der Beiträge für den KVP durch die Mitarbeitenden stoßen Unternehmen, insbesondere KMU, jedoch auf vielfältige Herausforderungen. Diesen Problemen können Unternehmen durch das KVP-Tool begegnen, welches im Projekt „Adaptive Spielifizierung im KVP“ entwickelt wird. Durch die Digitalisierung und Spielifizierung des Prozes- ses im KVP-Tool wird die kontinuierliche Beteiligung nachhaltig durch intrinsische Anreize gefördert. Die Neuartigkeit des Projektes ergibt sich aus der Adaptivität der Spielifizierung, also die Wechselwirkung zu den Nutzenden. Dabei werden zwei Aspekte fokussiert: unterschiedliche Spielertypen und Marktdynamik.
Software platforms allow for the extension of features by third-party contributors. Thereby, platform innovation is an important aspects of platforms attractiveness for users and complementors. While previous research focused the introduction of new features, the aspect of feature removal and discontinued features on software platforms has been disregarded. To explore the phenomenon and motivations for feature removal on software platforms, a review of recent literature is provided. To illustrate the existence of and motivations for feature removal, a case study of the browser platform Mozilla Firefox is presented. The results reveal feature removal to regularly occur on browser platforms for user- and developer-related features. Frequent reasons for feature removal involve unused features, security concerns, and bugs. Related motivations for feature removal are discussed from the platform owner's perspective. Implications for complementors and users are highlighted.
Die Potenziale plattformbasierter Geschäftsmodelle im Kontext von Industrie 4.0 sind bisher nicht vollständig erschlossen. Ansatzpunkte für Plattformen und ökosystembasierte Wertschöpfung variieren zwischen Industrien. Die Kunststoffindustrie ist dahingehend bisher weitestgehend unberücksichtigt. Aufgrund der Industriestruktur, insb. der einheitlichen Wertschöpfungsstrukturen eignet sich die Kunststoffindustrie für den Einsatz digitaler Plattformen. Neben Ansätzen für Plattformen in der Spritzgussindustrie bietet der Beitrag ein Vorgehensmodell für die Erweiterung etablierte Geschäftsmodelle. Somit kann der Einstieg in plattformbasierte Geschäftsmodelle für KMUs erleichtert werden.
Digitale Plattformen finden zunehmende Verbreitung in unterschiedlichen Industriezweigen. Immer mehr Unternehmen sind an der Erschließung verbundener Potenziale für ihr Geschäft interessiert. Im Maschinen- und Anlagenbau wird die Vernetzung von Maschinen zunehmend ein Wettbewerbsfaktor für Hersteller. Der Einsatz digitaler Plattformen im Maschinen- und Anlagenbau bietet Herstellern Möglichkeiten zur gezielten Erweiterung des Geschäftsmodells. Für die Bereitstellung digitaler Plattformen können Unternehmen auf unterschiedliche Strategien zurückgreifen. Hierbei sollten Unternehmen die für ihre Konstellation geeignete Variante systematisch identifizieren, um die angestrebten Ziele zu erreichen. Die geeignete Strategie ist von einer Vielzahl an Faktoren abhängig. Als Grundlage für die Identifikation der geeigneten Strategie bietet dieser Beitrag eine systematische Untersuchung der möglichen Bereitstellungsstrategien für Unternehmen. Neben der theoretischen Systematisierung werden gegenwärtig genutzte Strategien am Beispiel des Maschinen- und Anlagenbaus in Deutschland vorgestellt. Zudem werden spezifische Merkmale, welche die Nutzung einer Strategie beeinflussen, als Ansatzpunkt für einen Strategieformulierungsprozess identifiziert. Im Maschinen- und Anlagenbau ist die Bereitstellung einer eigenen Plattform, insbesondere bei Großunternehmen vorherrschend. Die Strategien von KMU unterschieden sich von Großunternehmen.

Dass Daten und Analysen Innovationstreiber sind und nicht mehr nur einen Hygienefaktor darstellen, haben viele Unternehmen erkannt. Um Potenziale zu heben, müssen Daten zielführend integriert werden. Komplexe Systemlandschaften und isolierte Datenbestände erschweren dies. Technologien für die erfolgreiche Umsetzung von datengetriebenem Management müssen richtig eingesetzt werden.
Die Digitalisierung des deutschen Mittelstandes schreitet weiterhin schleppend voran. So verfügt zwar ein wachsender Teil dieser Unternehmen über vereinzelte Informations- und Kommunikationssysteme, die zielführende Vernetzung und Integration dieser Systeme stellt jedoch weiterhin eine große Aufgabe dar [1]. Besonders vor dem Hintergrund wachsender Bedürfnisse für Informationen und Transparenz sehen sich Unternehmen zunehmend mit der analyseorientierten Nutzbarmachung der Unternehmensdaten konfrontiert [2].

Digital platforms, by their design, allow the coordination of multiple entities to achieve a common goal. In the public sector, different understandings of the platform concept prevail. To guide the development and further re-search a coherent understanding is required. To address this gap, we identify the constitutive elements of platforms in the public sector. Moreover, their potential to coordinate partially autonomous entities as typical for federal organized states is highlighted. This study contributes through a uniform understanding of public service platforms by providing a framework with constitutive elements, that may guide future analysis. Apart from chance regarding coordination, platforms are well suited to support contextual eGovernment targets. Among them is service personalization. Highly individualized service offerings support targets such as No Stop government. To this end, the paper extends the framework for service personalization in the public sector and exemplifies related aspects using a reference case.

Obwohl digitale Plattformen vornehmlich von Großunternehmen betrieben werden, bieten sie klein- und mittelständischen Unternehmen (KMU) Potenziale zur Verbreitung innovativer Technologien und für den Ausbau ihres Geschäftsmodells. Für die Umsetzung digitaler Plattformen stehen Unternehmen mehrere Strategien zur Verfügung. Der Beitrag vergleicht und bewertet grundlegende Strategien am Beispiel eines Maschinenbauunternehmens. Die Ergebnisse dienen als Grundlage für die Entscheidungsfindung von KMU.
The idea of the continuous improvement process (CIP) helps companies to continuously improve their operation and thereby contributes to their competitiveness. Through digi tization, new potentials emerge to solve known CIP issues. This contribution specifically addresses the individual motivation of employees to contribute to the CIP. Typically, related initiatives lack contributions over time. The use of gamification is a promising way to achieve continuous participation by addressing the individual needs of participants. While the use of extrinsic motivation elements is common in practice, the idea of this approach is to specifically address intrinsic motivations which serve as a long-term motivator. This article contributes to a gam-ification concept for the continuous improvement process. The main results include an adapted CIP, a gamification concept, and a market mechanism. Furthermore, the concept is implemented and demonstrated as a prototype in an online platform.
Die optimale Dimensionierung von IT-Hardware stellt Entscheider aufgrund der stetigen Weiterentwicklung zunehmend vor Herausforderungen. Dies gilt im Speziellen auch für Analytics-Infrastrukturen, die zunehmend auch neue Software zur Analyse von Daten einsetzen, welche in den Ressourcenanforderungen stark variieren. Damit eine flexible und gleichzeitig effiziente Gestaltung von Analytics-Infrastrukturen erreicht werden kann, wird ein dynamisch arbeitendes Architekturkonzept vorgeschlagen, das Aufgaben auf Basis einer systemspezifischen Entscheidungsmaxime mit Hilfe einer Eskalationsmatrix verteilt und hierfür Aufgabencharakteristiken sowie verfügbare Hardwareausstattungen entsprechend ihrer Auslastung berücksichtigt.
While Information Systems (IS) Research on the individual and workgroup level of analysis is omnipresent, research on the enterprise-level IS is less frequent. Even though research on Enterprise Systems and their management is established in academic associations and conference programs, enterprise-level phenomena are underrepresented. This minitrack provides a forum to integrate existing research streams that traditionally needed to be attached to other topics (such as IS management or IS governance). The minitrack received broad attention. The three selected papers address different facets of the future role of enterprise-wide IS including aspects such as carbonization, ecosystem integration, and technology-organization fit.
