Valuations of Terms
(2003)
Let tau be a type of algebras. There are several commonly used measurements of the complexity of terms of type tau, including the depth or height of a term and the number of variable symbols appearing in a term. In this paper we formalize these various measurements, by defining a complexity or valuation mapping on terms. A valuation of terms is thus a mapping from the absolutely free term algebra of type tau into another algebra of the same type on which an order relation is defined. We develop the interconnections between such term valuations and the equational theory of Universal Algebra. The collection of all varieties of a given type forms a complete lattice which is very complex and difficult to study; valuations of terms offer a new method to study complete sublattices of this lattice
Recently, much ecological research has focused on predicting invasions of alien species in order to prevent potentially negative effects of such invasions. In this study, we utilize novel methods of landscape ecology for testing the hypothesis that increasing structural diversity correlates with an increasing number of alien plant species. Our overall findings support this hypothesis and suggest that in the studied area (RB Dessau, Sachsen Anhalt, Germany), species richness of neophytes is positively correlated with the diversity in land-use types and structures. However, this relationship between structural diversity and species diversity applied for native spe-cies, too. Furthermore, our results support findings of previous studies which show that neophytes occur mainly in artificially or naturally disturbed areas. Our overall findings highlight the use of landscape-scale ecological methods for studying plant distribution patterns.
As a non-contact process laser beam melt ablation offers several advantages compared to conventional processing mechanisms. During ablation the surface of the workpiece is molten by the energy of a CO2-laser beam, this melt is then driven out by the impulse of an additional process gas. Although the idea behind laser beam melt ablation is rather simple, the process itself has a major limitation in practical applications: with increasing ablation rate surface quality of the workpiece processed declines rapidly. With different ablation rates different surface structures can be distinguished, which can be characterised by suitable surface parameters. The corresponding regimes of pattern formation are found in linear and non-linear statistical properties of the recorded process emissions as well. While the ablation rate can be represented in terms of the line-energy, this parameter does not provide sufficient information about the full behaviour of the system. The dynamics of the system is dominated by oscillations due to the laser cycle but includes some periodically driven non-linear processes as well. Upon the basis of the measured time series, a corresponding model is developed. The deeper understanding of the process can be used to develop strategies for a process control.

The progesterone concentration in blood samples can be utilised as a marker for the diagnosis of early pregnancy, endocrinopathy and virilism. Here, we describe a method for progesterone detection and measurement in whole blood samples by a surface sensitive biosensor used in conjunction with an integrated optical grating coupler. This device determines refractive index changes near the biosensor's surface. Hence, biological species bound to a surface layer can be measured in real-time without any label. For the measurements, we have modified the indirect competitive immonoassay principle. The concentration of the progesterone antibody was kept at 1 µg/ml. Progesterone concentration was determined in buffer solution and whole blood in a range between 0.005 and 10 ng/ml. The detection limit was determined to be 3 pM. The relative standard deviation was calculated to be 3.5%.

The recent work on a variety of family 18 chitonolytic enzymes has yielded important data concerning the structure, substrate-binding, catalysis, inhibitor-binding and even dynamics. These data have been useful in helping to better understand the roles of various types of chitinases in chitin hydrolysis, to rationally engineer the properties of these enzymes, thus making them more suitable as biocatalysts, and to study and understand the effectiveness of natural and designed chitinase inhibitors, which may be of medical interest. On the other hand, the recent work on ChiB shows that catalysis in family 18 chitinases is a highly complicated process, involving larger parts of the enzyme and dynamics. Thus, despite recent discoveries, there is still a lot more to discover about how these enzyme work.
The classical (Levins) metapopulation scenario envisions a species persisting in a network of habitat patches through a balance between frequent local (within-patch) extinctions and recolonizations. Although this is the dominant paradigm for species in fragmented habitats, empirical support is limited and it has been argued that very restrictive conditions on migration rates are required: high enough for recolonization to balance extinctions, but low enough that local populations do not fluctuate in synchrony. Through simulation and analysis of a stochastic spatial model, we argue that the likelihood of persistence via the classical scenario is strongly affected by some basic properties of within- patch successional dynamics whose importance has not been emphasized in metapopulation theory: the distribution of successional stage durations, and whether patches are "refractory" versus immediately available for recolonization after an extinction has occurred. These properties are tied to the biological causes of extinction (e.g., demographic accident versus regular successional changes) and patch recovery (e.g., recolonization by a host species versus regeneration of an exhausted resource base). Our results indicate that metapopulation theory needs to incorporate the patch-dynamics perspective of a landscape in a dynamic mosaic of successional states, with particular attention to links between colonization-extinction processes and local succession.
Computational models such as E-Z Reader and SWIFT are ideal theoretical tools to test quantitatively our current understanding of eye-movement control in reading. Here we present a mathematical analysis of word skipping in the E-Z Reader model by semianalytic methods, to highlight the differences in current modeling approaches. In E-Z Reader, the word identification system must outperform the oculomotor system to induce word skipping. In SWIFT, there is competition among words to be selected as a saccade target. We conclude that it is the question of competitors in the "game" of word skipping that must be solved in eye movement research
