Rivers form the most important natural corridors through the landscape. Certain plant species grow mainly or exclusively in these corridors as it has been observed for about 150 years in Central European lowlands. However, these species do not form a homogenous group in terms of biogeography, site requirements, life form, or any other feature this distribution pattern. Accordingly, first, we give a review of the various hypotheses which have been proposed to explain the river corridor distribution pattern. This includes (1) river corridors acting as routes of migration or invasion, (2) floodplain-specific disturbance providing open sites, (3) temporary anoxic conditions during floods, (4) deviating meso-climatic conditions, (5) specific substrate and nutrient supply, and (6) water supply. In particular, the above hypotheses (2-5) imply that river corridor plants may be well-adapted to specific stress and regeneration conditions in floodplains while other species may be not. This may lead to reduced competition in river corridors. We suggest this mechanism to constitute actual benefits for river corridor plants. Secondly, we present a simple model of multi-species population dynamics to show, that our competition-related framework is, in principle, able to explain river corridor plant species distribution patterns. As, however, none of the above hypotheses (1-6) have been tested experimentally we thirdly present a currently running experimental study on the river corridor plant Juncus atratus (black rush) in north- eastern Germany. We emphasize that much more experimental evidence must be gained on population ecology and meta- population dynamics to understand the distribution patterns of river corridor plants.
Quenching of the triplet state of tryptophan by cysteine has provided a new tool for measuring the rate of forming a specific intramolecular contact in disordered polypeptides. Here, we use this technique to investigate contact formation in the denatured state of CspTm, a small cold-shock protein from Thermotoga maritima, engineered to contain a single tryptophan residue (W29) and a single cysteine residue at the C terminus (C67). At all concentrations of denaturant, the decay rate of the W29 triplet of the unfolded protein is more than tenfold faster than the rate observed for the native protein (not, vert, similar104 s;1). Experiments on the unfolded protein without the added C- terminal cysteine residue show that this faster rate results entirely from contact quenching by C67. The quenching rate in the unfolded state by C67 increases at concentrations of denaturant that favor folding, indicating a compaction of the unfolded protein as observed previously in single-molecule Foerster resonance energy transfer (FRET) experiments.

We introduce a differential topological invariant for compact differentiable manifolds by counting the small eigenvalues of the Conformal Laplace operator. This invariant vanishes if and only if the manifold has a metric of positive scalar curvature. We show that the invariant does not increase under surgery of codimension at least three and we give lower and upper bounds in terms of the alpha-genus.
Sensitization by interleukin-6 of rat hepatocytes to tumor necrosis factor alpha-induced apoptosis
(2003)
BACKGROUND/AIMS: Tumor necrosis factor (TNF) elicits hepatocyte apoptosis in toxic liver injury and is also central in hepatocyte proliferation after partial hepatectomy. In both circumstances interleukin (IL)-6 levels are also elevated. In mouse liver IL-6 attenuated Fas receptor-mediated apoptosis indicating its interference with pro-apoptotic signal chains. It was, therefore, the aim to examine the modulation by IL-6 of TNFalpha-induced apoptosis in rat hepatocytes. METHODS: Primary rat hepatocytes were treated with IL-6 prior to induction of apoptosis with TNFalpha/ actinomycin D or anti-Fas antibody M-20. Apoptosis was detected by determination of caspase-3 activation and bisbenzimide staining of condensed nuclei. Expression of TNFalpha receptors was analyzed by semi-quantitative polymerase chain reaction and ligand binding studies with [125I]-TNFalpha. RESULTS: IL-6 treatment doubled TNFalpha/actinomycin D- induced caspase-3 activity and significantly enhanced chromatin condensation. By contrast IL-6 inhibited Fas-induced increase in caspase-3 activity by 45% and significantly reduced chromatin condensation. IL-6 increased the mRNA level of TNF-R1 1.35-fold and augmented cell surface binding of [125I]-TNFalpha 3-fold. The latter and TNFalpha-mediated caspase activation was attenuated by prostaglandin E(2). CONCLUSIONS: IL-6 - in contrast to its anti-apoptotic modulation of the Fas-induced pathway - exerted a pro-apoptotic effect on the TNFalpha/actinomycin D-induced apoptosis by increasing the number of TNF-R on hepatocytes.

We investigate the evolution of a disk wind into a collimated jet under the influence of magnetic diffusivity. Using the ZEUS-3D code in the axisymmetry option we solve the time-dependent resistive MHD equations for a model setup of a central star surrounded by an accretion disk. The disk is taken as a time-independent boundary condition for the mass flow rate and the magnetic flux distribution. We find that the diffusive jets propagate slower into the ambient medium, most probably due to the lower mass flow rate in axial direction. Close to the star we find that a quasi stationary state evolves after several hundreds (weak diffusion) or thousands (strong diffusion) of disk rotations. Magnetic diffusivity affects the protostellar jet structure de-collimating it. We explain these effects in the framework of the Lorentz force.
Oases is a special ecosystem formed in arid climate and hungriness environment, in which resident, water and soil are the principal factor and exchanges of materials, energy and information are the main functional characteristics. The oases regions in central Asia are not only the basilic cradle of civilization of human beings, but also the important strategic places in world growing awareness of the potential benefits. We choose Keriya River Basin oases in south of Xinjiang as a case to study critical controlling of Oases Evolution, Based on the theories and methods used for environmental geology, physical geography, land resource research, and oases ecology. This study try to indicate the essential factors driving the oases ecosystem and the interactional dynamic mechanism in different scales and levels, confirm the optimal equilibrium aggregate of harmonious development between Population, Resources, Environment and Development, and establish the critical controlling pattern of sustainable development. We advance the indicator system to research the evolution of the PRED System of oases in Keriya River valley oases, in basis of the information derived from the field investigation and local materials. According to inquisitional result based on technical support of Geographic Information System (GIS) and Remote Sense (RS), the comparisons and analyses are carried out in land use at the upper reaches, vegetation change in the middle reaches, and desertification at the lower reaches, which narrates the regulations of Keriya River Valley oases land cover dynamic change. The main land cover types represent distinct characteristics of the local place. On the basis of field survey and statistical data, we use ARCINFO software to preprocess these data and the 2 TM satellite images. Through analyzing these images resulting from post- classification compare, we sums up the concrete quantificational dynamic distributed data of 13 land types covering a span of 15 years and regulation of the local ecological environment system. It finally points out that the trend of Keriya River Valley oases desertification expansion is mainly related to two important reasons: impact of natural environment and impact of human activities.
sent observations of the Type Ia supernova SN 2002er during the brightening phase. The observations were performed with the Potsdam Multi Aperture Spectrophotometer (PMAS) integral field instrument. Due to the 8arcsecx8 arcsec field of view of the spectrograph an accurate background subtraction was possible. Results from analyses of the evolution of absorption features in comparisons with other SNe show that SN 2002er is a fairly bright Type Ia supernova with a peak brightness of MB=-19.6+/-0.1.
