The use of unilateral force under George W. Bush is not a new phenomenon in US foreign policy. As the author argues, it is merely a continuation of Bill Clinton’s foreign policy and is deeply rooted in both the foreign policy traditions of Jacksonianism and Wilsonianism. The analysis concludes that Clinton used unilateralist foreign policy with a 'smile' whereas the Bush administration uses it with an attitude.
In this work, some new results to exploit the recurrence properties of quasiperiodic dynamical systems are presented by means of a two dimensional visualization technique, Recurrence Plots(RPs). Quasiperiodicity is the simplest form of dynamics exhibiting nontrivial recurrences, which are common in many nonlinear systems. The concept of recurrence was introduced to study the restricted three body problem and it is very useful for the characterization of nonlinear systems. I have analyzed in detail the recurrence patterns of systems with quasiperiodic dynamics both analytically and numerically. Based on a theoretical analysis, I have proposed a new procedure to distinguish quasiperiodic dynamics from chaos. This algorithm is particular useful in the analysis of short time series. Furthermore, this approach demonstrates to be efficient in recognizing regular and chaotic trajectories of dynamical systems with mixed phase space. Regarding the application to real situations, I have shown the capability and validity of this method by analyzing time series from fluid experiments.

The article puts forward a discourse-pragmatic approach to the notoriously evasive phenomena of contrastivity and emphasis. It is argued that occurrences of focus that are treated in terms of ‘contrastive focus’, ‘kontrast’ (Vallduví & Vilkuna 1998) or ‘identificational focus’ (É. Kiss 1998) in the literature should not be analyzed in familiar semantic terms like introduction of alternatives or exhaustivity. Rather, an adequate analysis must take into account discourse-pragmatic notions like hearer expectation or discourse expectability of the focused content in a given discourse situation. The less expected a given content is judged to be for the hearer, relative to the Common Ground, the more likely a speaker is to mark this content by means of special grammatical devices, giving rise to emphasis.
As land-cover conversion continues to expand into ever more remote areas in the humid tropics, montane rainforests are increasingly threatened. In the south Ecuadorian Andes, they are not only subject to man-made disturbances but also to naturally occurring landslides. I was interested in the impact of this ecosystem dynamics on a key parameter of the hydrologic cycle, the soil saturated hydraulic conductivity (synonym: permeability; Ks from here on), because it is a sensitive indicator for soil disturbances. My general objective was to quantify the effects of the regional natural and human disturbances on the saturated hydraulic conductivity and to describe the resulting spatial-temporal patterns. The main hypotheses were: 1) disturbances cause an apparent displacement of the less permeable soil layer towards the surface, either due to a loss of the permeable surface soil after land-sliding, or as a consequence of the surface soil compaction under cattle pastures; 2) ‘recovery’ from disturbance, either because of landslide re-vegetation or because of secondary succession after pasture abandonment, involves an apparent displacement of the less permeable layer back towards the original depth an 3) disturbances cause a simplification of the Ks spatial structure, i.e. the spatially dependent random variation diminishes; the subsequent recovery entails the re-establishment of the original structure. In my first study, I developed a synthesis of recent geostatistical research regarding its applicability to soil hydraulic data, including exploratory data analysis and variogram estimation techniques; I subsequently evaluated the results in terms of spatial prediction uncertainty. Concerning the exploratory data analysis, my main results were: 1) Gaussian uni- and bivariate distributions of the log-transformed data; 2) the existence of significant local trends; 3) no need for robust estimation; 4) no anisotropic variation. I found partly considerable differences in covariance parameters resulting from different variogram estimation techniques, which, in the framework of spatial prediction, were mainly reflected in the spatial connectivity of the Ks-field. Ignoring the trend component and an arbitrary use of robust estimators, however, would have the most severe consequences in this respect. Regarding variogram modeling, I encouraged restricted maximum likelihood estimation because of its accuracy and independence on the selected lags needed for experimental variograms. The second study dealt with the Ks spatial-temporal pattern in the sequences of natural and man-made disturbances characteristic for the montane rainforest study area. To investigate the disturbance effects both on global means and the spatial structure of Ks, a combined design-and model-based sampling approach was used for field-measurements at soil depths of 12.5, 20, and 50 cm (n=30-150/depth) under landslides of different ages (2 and 8 years), under actively grazed pasture, fallows following pasture abandonment (2 to 25 years of age), and under natural forest. Concerning global means, our main findings were 1) global means of the soil permeability generally decrease with increasing soil depth; 2) no significant Ks differences can be observed among landslides and compared to the natural forest; 3) a distinct permeability decrease of two orders of magnitude occurs after forest conversion to pasture at shallow soil depths, and 4) the slow regeneration process after pasture abandonment requires at least one decade. Regarding the Ks spatial structure, we found that 1) disturbances affect the Ks spatial structure in the topsoil, and 2) the largest differences in spatial patterns are associated with the subsoil permeability. In summary, the regional landslide activity seems to affect soil hydrology to a marginal extend only, which is in contrast to the pronounced drop of Ks after forest conversion. We used this spatial-temporal information combined with local rain intensities to assess the partitioning of rainfall into vertical and lateral flowpaths under undisturbed, disturbed, and regenerating land-cover types in the third study. It turned out that 1) the montane rainforest is characterized by prevailing vertical flowpaths in the topsoil, which can switch to lateral directions below 20 cm depth for a small number of rain events, which may, however, transport a high portion of the annual runoff; 2) similar hydrological flowpaths occur under the landslides except for a somewhat higher probability of impermeable layer formation in the topsoil of a young landslide, and 3) pronounced differences in runoff components can be observed for the human disturbance sequence involving the development of near-surface impeding layers for 24, 44, and 8 % of rain events for pasture, a two-year-old fallow, and a ten-year-old fallow, respectively.
We compute the local spectrum of the magnetic field near a metallic microstructure at finite temperature. Our main focus is on deviations from a plane-layered geometry for which we review the main properties. Arbitrary geometries are handled with the help of numerical calculations based on surface integral equations. The magnetic noise shows a significant polarization anisotropy above flat wires with finite lateral width, in stark contrast to an infinitely wide wire. Within the limits of a two-dimensional setting, our results provide accurate estimates for loss and dephasing rates in so-called `atom chip traps' based on metallic wires. A simple approximation based on the incoherent summation of local current elements gives qualitative agreement with the numerics, but fails to describe current correlations among neighboring objects.
The mammalian brain is, with its numerous neural elements and structured complex connectivity, one of the most complex systems in nature. Recently, large-scale corticocortical connectivities, both structural and functional, have received a great deal of research attention, especially using the approach of complex networks. Here, we try to shed some light on the relationship between structural and functional connectivities by studying synchronization dynamics in a realistic anatomical network of cat cortical connectivity. We model the cortical areas by a subnetwork of interacting excitable neurons (multilevel model) and by a neural mass model (population model). With weak couplings, the multilevel model displays biologically plausible dynamics and the synchronization patterns reveal a hierarchical cluster organization in the network structure. We can identify a group of brain areas involved in multifunctional tasks by comparing the dynamical clusters to the topological communities of the network. With strong couplings of multilevel model and by using neural mass model, the dynamics are characterized by well-defined oscillations. The synchronization patterns are mainly determined by the node intensity (total input strengths of a node); the detailed network topology is of secondary importance. The biologically improved multilevel model exhibits similar dynamical patterns in the two regimes. Thus, the study of synchronization in a multilevel complex network model of cortex can provide insights into the relationship between network topology and functional organization of complex brain networks.
[1] Observations of hydrological response often exhibit considerable scatter that is difficult to interpret. In this paper, we examine runoff production of 53 sprinkling experiments on the water-repellent soils in the southern Alps of Switzerland; simulated plot scale tracer transport in the macroporous soils at the Weiherbach site, Germany; and runoff generation data from the 2.3-km(2) Tannhausen catchment, Germany, that has cracking soils. The response at the three sites is highly dependent on the initial soil moisture state as a result of the threshold dynamics of the systems. A simple statistical model of threshold behavior is proposed to help interpret the scatter in the observations. Specifically, the model portrays how the inherent macrostate uncertainty of initial soil moisture translates into the scatter of the observed system response. The statistical model is then used to explore the asymptotic pattern of predictability when increasing the number of observations, which is normally not possible in a field study. Although the physical and chemical mechanisms of the processes at the three sites are different, the predictability patterns are remarkably similar. Predictability is smallest when the system state is close to the threshold and increases as the system state moves away from it. There is inherent uncertainty in the response data that is not measurement error but is related to the observability of the initial conditions.

CAMPHOR: A GOOD MODEL FOR ILLUSTRATING NMR TECHNIQUES. The use of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance spectroscopy to establish the three-dimensional structures of molecules is an important component of modern Chemistry courses. The combination of techniques that can be used for this purpose is conveniently illustrated by their application to the camphor molecule. This paper presents applications of several techniques used in NMR spectral interpretation in an increasing order of complexity. The result of individual experiments is illustrated in order to familiarize the user with the way connectivity through bonds and through space is established from 1D/2D-NMR spectra and molecular stereochemistry is determined from different NMR experiments
In this paper, we discuss the global existence of solutions for Chemotaxis models with saturation growth. If the coe±cients of the equations are all positive smooth T-periodic functions, then the problem has a positive T-periodic solution, and meanwhile we discuss here the stability problems for the T-periodic solutions.
In this article we construct the fundamental solutions for the wave equation arising in the de Sitter model of the universe. We use the fundamental solutions to represent solutions of the Cauchy problem and to prove the Lp − Lq-decay estimates for the solutions of the equation with and without a source term.
The intergalactic medium is kept highly photoionised by the intergalactic UV background radiation field generated by the overall population of quasars and galaxies. In the vicinity of sources of UV photons, such as luminous high-redshift quasars, the UV radiation field is enhanced due to the local source contribution. The higher degree of ionisation is visible as a reduced line density or generally as a decreased level of absorption in the Lyman alpha forest of neutral hydrogen. This so-called proximity effect has been detected with high statistical significance towards luminous quasars. If quasars radiate rather isotropically, background quasar sightlines located near foreground quasars should show a region of decreased Lyman alpha absorption close to the foreground quasar. Despite considerable effort, such a transverse proximity effect has only been detected in a few cases. So far, studies of the transverse proximity effect were mostly limited by the small number of suitable projected pairs or groups of high-redshift quasars. With the aim to substantially increase the number of quasar groups in the vicinity of bright quasars we conduct a targeted survey for faint quasars around 18 well-studied quasars at employing slitless spectroscopy. Among the reduced and calibrated slitless spectra of 29000 objects on a total area of 4.39 square degrees we discover in total 169 previously unknown quasar candidates based on their prominent emission lines. 81 potential z>1.7 quasars are selected for confirmation by slit spectroscopy at the Very Large Telescope (VLT). We are able to confirm 80 of these. 64 of the newly discovered quasars reside at z>1.7. The high success rate of the follow-up observations implies that the majority of the remaining candidates are quasars as well. In 16 of these groups we search for a transverse proximity effect as a systematic underdensity in the HI Lyman alpha absorption. We employ a novel technique to characterise the random absorption fluctuations in the forest in order to estimate the significance of the transverse proximity effect. Neither low-resolution spectra nor high-resolution spectra of background quasars of our groups present evidence for a transverse proximity effect. However, via Monte Carlo simulations the effect should be detectable only at the 1-2sigma level near three of the foreground quasars. Thus, we cannot distinguish between the presence or absence of a weak signature of the transverse proximity effect. The systematic effects of quasar variability, quasar anisotopy and intrinsic overdensities near quasars likely explain the apparent lack of the transverse proximity effect. Even in absence of the systematic effects, we show that a statistically significant detection of the transverse proximity effect requires at least 5 medium-resolution quasar spectra of background quasars near foreground quasars whose UV flux exceeds the UV background by a factor 3. Therefore, statistical studies of the transverse proximity effect require large numbers of suitable pairs. Two sightlines towards the central quasars of our survey fields show intergalactic HeII Lyman alpha absorption. A comparison of the HeII absorption to the corresponding HI absorption yields an estimate of the spectral shape of the intergalactic UV radiation field, typically parameterised by the HeII/HI column density ratio eta. We analyse the fluctuating UV spectral shape on both lines of sight and correlate it with seven foreground quasars. On the line of sight towards Q0302-003 we find a harder radiation field near 4 foreground quasars. In the direct vicinity of the quasars eta is consistent with values of 25-100, whereas at large distances from the quasars eta>200 is required. The second line of sight towards HE2347-4342 probes lower redshifts where eta is directly measurable in the resolved HeII forest. Again we find that the radiation field near the 3 foreground quasars is significantly harder than in general. While eta still shows large fluctuations near the quasars, probably due to radiative transfer, the radiation field is on average harder near the quasars than far away from them. We interpret these discoveries as the first detections of the transverse proximity effect as a local hardness fluctuation in the UV spectral shape. No significant HI proximity effect is predicted for the 7 foreground quasars. In fact, the HI absorption near the quasars is close to or slightly above the average, suggesting that the weak signature of the transverse proximity effect is masked by intrinsic overdensities. However, we show that the UV spectral shape traces the transverse proximity effect even in overdense regions or at large distances. Therefore, the spectral hardness is a sensitive physical measure of the transverse proximity effect that is able to break the density degeneracy affecting the traditional searches.

Electrically charged cellular polymer films can exhibit very high piezoelectric activity and are therefore more and more often employed in advanced electromechanical and electro-acoustical transducers. In this paper, we report an optimized sequence of steps for preparing such ferroelectrets from commercial nonvoided ploy(ethylene terephthalate) (PETP) films by means of foaming with CO2 biaxial mechanical stretching, controlled void inflation, and bipolar electric charging. The nonvoid PETP films foamed with supercritical CO2 at a suitably high pressure and subsequently annealed for stabilization. The cellular foam structure was further optimized by means of well controlled biaxial stretching in a commercial stretcher and sometimes subsequent inflamation in a pressure chamber. Bipolar electric charging of the internal voids was achieved through the application of high electric fields in an SF0 atmosphere. The new optimized PETP ferroelectric exhibit quite large piezoelectric coefficients up to almost 500 pCN(-1), for which unusually low elastic stiffness of only around 0.3 MPa are essential. The PETP foam ferroelectrics posses unclamped thickenss-extension resonance frequences between approximately 120 and 250 kHz, and are thus highly suitable for several established as well as novel ultrasonic-transductant applications.
The paper presents a simulation and parameter-estimation approach for evaluating stochastic patterns of population growth and spread of an annual forest herb, Melampyrum pratense (Orobanchaceae). The survival of a species during large-scale changes in land use and climate will depend, to a considerable extent, on its dispersal and colonisation abilities. Predictions on species migration need a combination of field studies and modelling efforts. Our study on the ability of M. pratense to disperse into so far unoccupied areas was based on experiments in secondary woodland in NE Germany. Experiments started in 1997 at three sites where the species was not yet present, with 300 seeds sown within one square meter. Population development was then recorded until 2001 by mapping of individuals with a resolution of 5 cm. Additional observations considered density dependence of seed production. We designed a spatially explicit individual-based computer simulation model to explain the spatial patterns of population development and to predict future population spread. Besides primary drop of seeds (barochory) it assumed secondary seed transport by ants (myrmecochory) with an exponentially decreasing dispersal tail. An important feature of populationpattern explanation was the simultaneous estimation of both population-growth and dispersal parameters from consistent spatio-temporal data sets. As the simulation model produced stochastic time series and random spatially discrete distributions of individuals we estimated parameters by minimising the expectation of weighted sums of squares. These sums-ofsquares criteria considered population sizes, radial population distributions around the area of origin and distributions of individuals within squares of 25*25 cm, the range of density action. Optimal parameter values, together with the precision of the estimates, were obtained from calculating sums of squares in regular grids of parameter values. Our modelling results showed that transport of fractions of seeds by ants over distances of 1…2 m was indispensable for explaining the observed population spread that led to distances of at most 8 m from population origin within 3 years. Projections of population development over 4 additional years gave a diffusion-like increase of population area without any “outposts”. This prediction generated by the simulation model gave a hypothesis which should be revised by additional field observations. Some structural deviations between observations and model output already indicated that for full understanding of population spread the set of dispersal mechanisms assumed in the model may have to be extended by additional features of plant-animal mutualism.

Die Magisterarbeit (im Studiengang Soziologie an der Universität Potsdam) knüpft an Beate Krais’ Gedankengang an, wonach durch die unreflektierte Präsenz des Parsonschen Rollenkonzepts innerhalb der (soziologischen) Theorie, theoretische Gegensätze von Individuum und Gesellschaft, Natur und Kultur, Körper und Geist, Irrationalismus und Rationalismus etc. konzeptionell reformuliert werden. Auf dieser strukturellen Grundlage, so Krais’ kritische Stoßrichtung, legitimiere auch die Frauen- und Geschlechterforschung nur wieder überkommene Stereotypen über Geschlechterrollen (Gender) innerhalb moderner, ausdifferenzierter Gesellschaften. Grundlegender jedoch werde so die Vorstellung eines natürlich gegebenen Unterschieds zwischen ‚zwei’ Geschlechtern (Sex) begründet. Feministische Theorie, so Regine Gildemeisters und Angelika Wetterers sozialkonstruktivistisch fundierte Betrachtung, konterkariere auf diesem Wege gerade ihren eigenen Anspruch, das Ideologem: „Biologie als Schicksal“ als solches zu entlarven. In theoretisch-methodischer Konsequenz vollziehe man vielmehr eine problematische Positivierung des Geschlechterdualismus. In Überwindung dieser Problematik sind zwei Richtungen theoretischer Entwicklung erkennbar. Einerseits wird im Anschluss an neuere modernistische bzw. poststrukturalistische Argumentationen die Möglichkeit einer kritisch orientierten Sozial- bzw. Geschlechterforschung grundsätzlich bezweifelt. Andererseits wird an dieser Stelle aber auch der paradigmatische Übergang von der Frauen- und Geschlechterforschung zur Geschlechterverhältnisforschung expliziert, welcher die für das feministische Projekt grundlegende Verbindung wissenschaftlicher und kritischer Ambitionen neu reflektiert und im Anspruch auf eine integrative, gendersensible Sozialwissenschaft forschungsstrategisch neu ausrichtet. Mit der Betrachtung der Soziologie Pierre Bourdieus tritt der Diskussion eine theoretische Position hinzu, die in eigener Weise Schwachstellen und Einseitigkeiten postmoderner und postfeministischer Ansätze herausstellt. Auf der Grundlage einer praxeologischen Theorie zeigen sich aber auch besondere Affinitäten zum feministischen Diskurs. Über eine Theorie der symbolischen Gewalt verdeutlicht Bourdieu, wie die Kategorie ‚Geschlecht’ in der sozialen Praxis der Akteure immer wieder konstruiert wird (doing gender). Gleichwohl verweist er, über bisherige Erkenntnisse hinausgehend, auf die soziale Mächtigkeit dieser Kategorie innerhalb der Dialektik sozialer und symbolischer Strukturen. Gegen die Kritik, die im deutschsprachigen Raum von Seiten der Frauen- und Geschlechterforschung an Bourdieus Buch: „Die männliche Herrschaft“ (1997) geübt wurde, versucht die Arbeit einer vorschnellen Lesweise und Aburteilung des Bourdieuschen Werks durch eine evaluative Betrachtung seiner soziologischen Konzepte im Hinblick auf die Herausforderungen feministischer Theorie und Kritik entgegenzuwirken.
There is already strong evidence that temperate lakes have been highly vulnerable to human induced climate warming during the last century. Hitherto climate impact studies have mainly focussed on the impacts of the recent long-term warming in winter and spring and little is known on the influence of climate warming on temperate lakes in summer. In the present thesis, I studied some aspects, which may have been strongly involved in determining the response of a lake to climate warming in summer. Thereby I have focussed on climate induced impacts on the thermal characteristics and the phenology and abundance of summer plankton in a shallow polymictic lake (Müggelsee, Germany). First, the influence of climate warming on the phenology and abundance of the lake plankton was investigated across seasons. Fast-growing spring phytoplankton and zooplankton (Daphnia) advanced largely synchronously, whereas long-term changes in the phenology of slow-growing summer zooplankton were clearly species-specific and not synchronised. The phenology and/or abundance of several summer copepod species changed according to their individual thermal requirements at decisive developmental stages such as emergence from diapause in spring. The study emphasises that not only the degree of warming, but also its timing within the annual cycle is of great ecological importance. To analyse the impact of climate change on the thermal characteristics of the lake, I examined the long-term development of the daily epilimnetic temperature extrema during summer. The study demonstrated for the first time for lakes that the daily epilimnetic minima (during nighttime) have increased more rapidly than the daily epilimnetic maxima (during daytime), resulting in a distinct decrease in the daily epilimnetic temperature range. This day-night asymmetry in epilimnetic temperature was likely caused by an increased nighttime emission of long-wave radiation from the atmosphere. This underlines that not only increases in air temperature, but also changes in other meteorological variables such as wind speed, relative humidity and cloud cover may play an important role in determining the lake temperature with respect to further climate change. Furthermore, a short-term analysis on the mixing regime of the polymictic lake was conducted to examine the frequency and duration of stratification events and their impacts on dissolved oxygen, dissolved nutrients and summer phytoplankton. Even during the longest stratification events (heatwaves in 2003 and 2006) the thermal characteristics of the lake differed from those typically found in shallow dimictic lakes, which exhibit a continuous stratification during summer. Particularly, hypolimnetic temperatures were higher, favouring the depletion of oxygen and the accumulation of dissolved nutrient in the hypolimnion. Thermal stratification will be very likely amplified in the future, thus, I conclude that polymictic lakes will be very vulnerable to alterations in the thermal regime with respect to projections of further climate change during summer. Finally, a long-term case study on the long and short-term changes in the development of the planktonic larvae of the freshwater mussel Dreissena polymorpha was performed to analyse the impacts of simultaneous changes in the thermal and in the trophic regime of the lake. Both the climate warming and the decrease in external nutrient load were important in determining the abundance of the pelagic larvae by affecting different features of the life-history of this species throughout the warm season. The long-term increase in the abundance and length of larvae was related to the decrease in external nutrient loading and the change in phytoplankton composition. However, the recent heatwaves in 2003 and 2006 have offset this positive effect on larval abundance, due to unfavourable low oxygen concentrations that had resulted from extremely long stratification events, mimicking the effects of nutrient enrichment. Climate warming may thus induce counteracting effects in productive shallow lakes that underwent lake restoration through a decrease in external nutrient loading. I conclude that not only the nature of climate change and thus the timing of climate warming throughout the seasons and the occurrence of climatic extremes as heatwaves, but also site-specific lake conditions as the thermal mixing regime and the trophic state are crucial factors governing the impacts of climate warming on internal lake processes during summer. Consequently, further climate impact research on lake functioning should focus on how the different lake types respond to the complex environmental forcing in summer, to allow for a comprehensive understanding of human induced environmental changes in lakes.
Der Vortrag behandelt den Einfluss sprachlicher Strukturen auf unsere Sicht der Welt. Am Beispiel des Englischen und Deutschen diskutiert die Referentin zusammengesetzte Wörter, wie das deutsche Wort "Schildkröte" oder das englische Wort "hedgehog" (Igel, wörtlich: "Heckeneber"), bei denen die lexikalische Bedeutung von unserem Weltwissen abweicht. Eine Schildkröte ist keine Kröte, ein Igel kein Eber, auch wenn ihre Bezeichnungen im Deutschen beziehungsweise im Englischen dies suggerieren. Führen sprachliche Unterschiede in diesem Bereich zu messbaren Unterschieden in der Art, wie wir die Welt wahrnehmen, derart dass Deutsche beispielsweise Schildkröten und Kröten als ähnlicher und Igel und Eber als unähnlicher ansehen, als englische Sprecher dies tun? Heike Wiese geht in ihrer Vorlesung der Frage nach, was solche Zusammenhänge über die Architektur des Sprachsystems und über die Schnittstelle zwischen Grammatik und Weltrepräsentation aussagen.
Aus der Einleitung: Vor 15 Jahren hat Polen mit dem Transformationsprozess begonnen, der das Land von einer sozialistischen Planwirtschaft mit autoritärem Regime in einen modernen demokratischen Staat marktwirtschaftlicher Ausrichtung verwandelt hat. Seither genießt das polnische Volk nach vielen Jahren der Fremdherrschaft wieder seine eigene Souveränität. Mit dem Ende der sozialistischen Ära begann eine Phase umfangreicher und weit reichender institutioneller, wirtschaftlicher und sozialer Veränderungen. Diese gehen einher mit hoher Arbeitslosigkeit und starker Verunsicherung im Umgang mit den sich neu bildenden Strukturen, was eine große Belastung für die Bevölkerung darstellt. Den Herausforderungen zum Trotz haben es die Polen geschafft, in nur wenigen Jahren ein institutionelles und wirtschaftliches Niveau zu erreichen, das sich an dem Niveau westeuropäischer Staaten orientiert. Diese Leistung wurde u. a. durch die Europäische Kommission anerkannt, indem 1998 zunächst die Beitrittsverhandlungen mit Polen eröffnet wurden und das Land im Mai 2004 zur Europäischen Union (EU) beitrat. Während die alten Mitgliedsstaaten der Europäischen Union eine lang andauernde Phase wirtschaftlichen Abschwungs erleiden, findet im angrenzenden Polen ein rasanter wirtschaftlicher Aufholungsprozess statt. Wachstumsraten von 5 % und mehr sind hierbei keine Seltenheit. Diese Entwicklung wird von vielen Bürgern der alten EU Mitgliedssaaten in Zeiten steigender Arbeitslosigkeit und sinkender Löhne wahrgenommen und teilweise als Ursache der eigenen Misere identifiziert. Tatsache aber ist, dass sogar bei anhaltender Dynamik der polnischen Wirtschaft ein Erreichen des westeuropäischen Standards, wenn überhaupt, erst in mehreren Jahrzehnten als realistisch erscheint. Ebenso wie im wirtschaftlichen Bereich stellt sich die institutionelle Diskrepanz zwischen Polen und den Ländern der EU der 15 dar. Zu groß sind die Unterschiede, als dass sie in nur einem Jahrzehnt hätten nachgeholt und ausgeglichen werden könnten. Als zusätzlich Hindernis ist zu werten, dass sich in den letzten Jahren die Berichte der Europäischen Kommission, der Weltbank oder Transparency International mehren, Korruption in Polen bedrohe sämtliche Sphären des öffentlichen und privaten Lebens und die junge „alte“ Demokratie somit durch hausgemachte Probleme ins Strudeln geraten könnte. Innerhalb der Europäischen Kommission scheint man sich des Problems der Korruption in Polen bewusst zu sein und befürchtet diese in Form eines trojanischen Pferdes importiert zu bekommen (Vgl. Dehley 2002: 4). Andere Organisationen wie GRECO1 zeichnen ein düstereres Szenario, da sie der Korruption in Polen attestieren, die demokratischen Institutionen auszuhöhlen.
A tight hormonal control of energy homeostasis is of pivotal relevance for animals. Recent evidence suggests an involvement of the nuclear receptor NR1i3 (CAR). Fasting induces CAR by largely unknown mechanisms and CAR-deficient mice are defective in fasting adaptation. In rat hepatocytes CAR was induced by WY14643, a PPARalpha-agonist. A DR1 motif in the CAR promoter was necessary and sufficient for this control. The PPARalpha-dependent increase in CAR potentiated the phenobarbital-induced transcription of the prototypical CAR-dependent gene CYP2B1. Since free fatty acids are natural ligands for PPARalpha, a fasting-induced increase in free fatty acids might induce CAR. In accordance with this hypothesis, CAR induction by fasting was abrogated in PPARalpha-deficient mice.
Different habitat models were created for the White Stork (Ciconia ciconia) in the region of the former German province of East Prussia (equals app. the current Russian oblast Kaliningrad and the Polish voivodship Warmia-Masuria). Different historical data sets describing the occurrence of the White Stork in the 1930s, as well as selected variables for the description of landscape and habitat, were employed. The processing and modeling of the applied data sets was done with a geographical information system (ArcGIS) and a statistical modeling approach that comes from the disciplines of machine-learning and data mining (TreeNet by Salford Systems Ltd.). Applying historical habitat descriptors, as well as data on the occurrence of the White Stork, models on two different scales were created: (i) a point scale model applying a raster with a cell size of 1 km2 and (ii) an administrative district scale model based on the organization of the former province of East Prussia. The evaluation of the created models show that the occurrence of White Stork nesting grounds in the former East Prussia for most parts is defined by the variables ‘forest’, ‘settlement area’, ‘pasture land’ and ‘proximity to coastline’. From this set of variables it can be assumed that a good food supply and nesting opportunities are provided to the White Stork in pasture and meadows as well as in the proximity to human settlements. These could be seen as crucial factors for the choice of nesting White Stork in East Prussia. Dense forest areas appear to be unsuited as nesting grounds of White Storks. The high influence of the variable ‘coastline’ is most likely explained by the specific landscape composition of East Prussia parallel to the coastline and is to be seen as a proximal factor for explaining the distribution of breeding White Storks. In a second step, predictions for the period of 1981 to 1993 could be made applying both scales of the models created in this study. In doing so, a decline of potential nesting habitat was predicted on the point scale. In contrast, the predicted White Stork occurrence increases when applying the model of the administrative district scale. The difference between both predictions is to be seen in the application of different scales (density versus suitability as breeding ground) and partly dissimilar explanatory variables. More studies are needed to investigate this phenomenon. The model predictions for the period 1981 to 1993 could be compared to the available inventories of that period. It shows that the figures predicted here were higher than the figures established by the census. This means that the models created here show rather a capacity of the habitat (potential niche). Other factors affecting the population size e.g. breeding success or mortality have to be investigated further. A feasible approach on how to generate possible habitat models was shown employing the methods presented here and applying historical data as well as assessing the effects of changes in land use on the White Stork. The models present the first of their kind, and could be improved by means of further data regarding the structure of the habitat and more exact spatially explicit information on the location of the nesting sites of the White Stork. In a further step, a habitat model of the present times should be created. This would allow for a more precise comparison regarding the findings from the changes of land use and relevant conditions of the environment on the White Stork in the region of former East Prussia, e.g. in the light of coming landscape changes brought by the European Union (EU).

Dichtung erscheint hier als Medium zur Vermittlung insbesondere moralpädagogischer Inhalte, das sich vor allem durch seine Versform von anderen sprachlichen Vermittlungsformen unterscheidet. Dieser Dichtungsbegriff wird zweitens mit dem neuplatonischen Begriff der Dichtung als Ergebnis einer göttlichen Inspiration (Enthusiasmus) konfrontiert, wie ihn Marsilio Ficino entwickelt hat. In Deutschland haben insbesondere Konrad Celtis und seine Schüler diesen Dichtungsbegriff vertreten, besonders prominent etwas Matthäus Lupinus Calidomius und Jacob Locher. In einem dritten Schritt zeigt der Beitrag, dass dieser Dichtungsbegriff aus theologischen Gründen im Protestantismus nicht mehr zu vertreten war: das reformatorische Postulat des sola scriptura verbot jede Berufung auf eine göttliche Inspiration außerhalb der Bibel.

The mode of nutrition of mixotrophic flagellates determines the food quality for their consumers

According to resource allocation theory, animals face a trade off between the allocation of resources into reproduction and into individual growth/maintenance. This trade off is reinforced when food conditions decline. It is well established in biological research that many animals increase their life span when food is in suboptimal supply for growth and/or reproduction. Such a situation of reduced food availability is called dietary restriction. An increase in life span under dietary restricted conditions is seen as a strategy to tolerate periods of food shortage so that the animals can start reproduction again when food is in greater supply. In this study, the effect of dietary restriction on life span and reproduction in two rotifer species, Cephalodella sp. and Elosa worallii, was investigated using life table experiments. The food concentration under dietary restricted conditions was below the threshold for population growth. It was (1) tested whether the rotifers start reproduction again after food replenishment, and (2) estimated whether the time scale of dietary restricted conditions is relevant for the persistence of a population in the field. Only E. worallii responded to dietary restriction with an increase in life span at the expense of reproduction. After replenishment of food, E. worallii started to reproduce again within I day. With an increase in the duration of dietary restricted conditions of up to 15 days, which is longer than the median life span of E. worallii under food saturation, the life span increased and the life time reproduction decreased. These results suggest that in a temporally (or spatially) variable environment, some rotifer populations can persist even during long periods of severe food deprivation.
The most massive stars are those with the shortest but most active life. One group of massive stars, the Luminous Blue Variables (LBVs), of which only a few objects are known, are in particular of interest concerning the stability of stars. They have a high mass loss rate and are close to being instable. This is even more likely as rotation becomes an important factor in stellar evolution of these stars. Through massive stellar winds and sometimes giant eruptions, LBV nebulae are formed. Various aspects in the evolution in the LBV phase lead, beside the large scale morphological and kinematical differences, to a diversity of small structures like clumps, rims, and outflows in these nebulae.
Proteins are chain molecules built from amino acids. The precise sequence of the 20 different types of amino acids in a protein chain defines into which structure a protein folds, and the three-dimensional structure in turn specifies the biological function of the protein. The reliable folding of proteins is a prerequisite for their robust function. Misfolding can lead to protein aggregates that cause severe diseases, such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, or the variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. Small single-domain proteins often fold without experimentally detectable metastable intermediate states. The folding dynamics of these proteins is thought to be governed by a single transition-state barrier between the unfolded and the folded state. The transition state is highly instable and cannot be observed directly. However, mutations in which a single amino acid of the protein is substituted by another one can provide indirect access. The mutations slightly change the transition-state barrier and, thus, the folding and unfolding times of the protein. The central question is how to reconstruct the transition state from the observed changes in folding times. In this habilitation thesis, a novel method to extract structural information on transition states from mutational data is presented. The method is based on (i) the cooperativity of structural elements such as alpha-helices and beta-hairpins, and (ii) on splitting up mutation-induced free-energy changes into components for these elements. By fitting few parameters, the method reveals the degree of structure formation of alpha-helices and beta-hairpins in the transition state. In addition, it is shown in this thesis that the folding routes of small single-domain proteins are dominated by loop-closure dependencies between the structural elements.
Intuitive Modelle der Informatik sind gedankliche Vorstellungen über informatische Konzepte, die mit subjektiver Gewissheit verbunden sind. Menschen verwenden sie, wenn sie die Arbeitsweise von Computerprogrammen nachvollziehen oder anderen erklären, die logische Korrektheit eines Programms prüfen oder in einem kreativen Prozess selbst Programme entwickeln. Intuitive Modelle können auf verschiedene Weise repräsentiert und kommuniziert werden, etwa verbal-abstrakt, durch ablauf- oder strukturorientierte Abbildungen und Filme oder konkrete Beispiele. Diskutiert werden in dieser Arbeit grundlegende intuitive Modelle für folgende inhaltliche Aspekte einer Programmausführung: Allokation von Aktivität bei einer Programmausführung, Benennung von Entitäten, Daten, Funktionen, Verarbeitung, Kontrollstrukturen zur Steuerung von Programmläufen, Rekursion, Klassen und Objekte. Mit Hilfe eines Systems von Online-Spielen, der Python Visual Sandbox, werden die psychische Realität verschiedener intuitiver Modelle bei Programmieranfängern nachgewiesen und fehlerhafte Anwendungen (Fehlvorstellungen) identifiziert.
Übergewicht, Diabetes oder Fettstoffwechselstörungen sind mit erniedrigten Adiponectinspiegeln assoziiert. Eine Modulation des Adiponectins kann durch genetische und metabolische Gegebenheiten erfolgen. Das Ziel dieser Arbeit war die Analyse von Faktoren, welche die Adiponectinspiegel beeinflussen können, sowie eine Charakterisierung der Oligomerverteilung unter verschiedenen metabolischen Bedingungen. In der MeSyBePo-Kohorte waren die zirkulierenden Adiponectinspiegel mit den Promotorpolymorphismen ADIPOQ -11377 C/G und ADIPOQ -11391 G/A im Adiponectingen assoziiert. Im Hinblick auf die metabolischen Faktoren korrelierte Adiponectin eng mit Parametern des Glukose- und Fettstoffwechsels sowie dem Übergewicht. Innerhalb von hyperinsulinämischen euglykämischen Clamps führte eine akute Hyperinsulinämie zu einer Abnahme der Adiponectinspiegel. Adiponectin zirkuliert im Serum als hochmolekulare (HMW), mittelmolekulare (MMW) und niedrigmolekulare (LMW) Spezies. Mit zunehmendem Körpergewicht konnte eine Verlagerung von HMW-Spezies hin zu den LMW-Spezies beobachtet werden. Durch eine moderate Gewichtsabnahme erhöhten sich die Anteile an HMW- und MMW-Adiponectin wieder. Während sich in Abhängigkeit vom Glukosemetabolismus keine Unterschiede in den Gesamtspiegeln ergaben, wurden bei Personen mit normaler Glukosetoleranz signifikant höhere Anteile an MMW-Adiponectin detektiert als bei Personen mit einem gestörten Glukosestoffwechsel. Insgesamt scheinen die HMW- und MMW-Spezies gegensätzlich zur LMW-Spezies reguliert zu werden. Die Arbeit unterstreicht die wichtige Rolle des Adiponectins im Glukose- und Fettstoffwechsel sowie bei einer Adipositas in vivo. Dabei waren Änderungen der Adiponectinspiegel bei Vorliegen von Insulinresistenz und Adipositas stets mit einer Umverteilung der Oligomerfraktionen verbunden. Vor allem die HMW- und MMW-Spezies des Adiponectins scheinen von entscheidender Bedeutung zu sein.
Die Arbeit beschreibt die Synthese, Charakterisierung und Anwendung von meso- und mikroporösen Hochleistungspolymeren. Im ersten Teil wird die Synthese von mesoporösen Polybenzimidazol (PBI) auf der Basis einer Templatierungsmethode vorgestellt. Auf der Grundlage kommerzieller Monomere und Silikatnanopartikel sowie eines neuen Vernetzers wurde ein Polymer-Silikat-Hybridmaterial aufgebaut. Das Herauslösen des Silikats mit Ammoniumhydrogendifluorid führt zu mesoporösen Polybenzimidazolen mit spherischen Poren von 9 bis 11 nm Durchmesser. Die Abhängigkeit der beobachteten Porosität vom Massenverhältnis Silikat zu Polymer wurde ebenso untersucht wie die Abhängigkeit der Porosität vom Vernetzergehalt. Die Porosität vollvernetzter Proben zeigt eine lineare Abhängigkeit vom Verhältnis Silikat zu Polymer bis zu einem Grenzwert von 1. Wird der Grenzwert überschritten, ist teilweiser Porenkollaps zu beobachten. Die Abhängigkeit der Porosität vom Vernetzergehalt bei festem Silikatgehalt ist nichtlinear. Oberhalb einer kritischen Vernetzerkonzentration wird eine komplette Replikation der Nanopartikel gefunden. Ist die Vernetzerkonzentration dagegen kleiner als der kritische Wert, so ist der völlige Kollaps einiger Poren bei Stabilität der verbleibenden Poren zu beobachten. Ein komplett unporöses PBI resultiert bei Abwesenheit des Vernetzers. Die mesoporösen PBI-Netzwerke konnten kontrolliert mit Phosphorsäure beladen werden. Die erhaltenen Addukte wurden auf ihre Protonenleitfähigkeit untersucht. Es kann gezeigt werden, dass die Nutzung der vordefinierten Morphologie im Vergleich zu einem unstrukturierten PBI in höheren Leitfähigkeiten resultiert. Durch die vernetzte Struktur war des Weiteren genügend mechanische Stabilität gegeben, um die Addukte reversibel und bei sehr guten Leitfähigkeiten bis zu Temperaturen von 190°C bei 0% relativer Feuchtigkeit zu untersuchen. Dies ist für unstrukturierte Phosphorsäure/PBI - Addukte aus linearem PBI nicht möglich. Im zweiten Teil der Arbeit wird die Synthese intrinsisch mikroporöser Polyamide und Polyimide vorgestellt. Das Konzept intrinsisch mikroporöser Polymere konnte damit auf weitere Polymerklassen ausgeweitet werden. Als zentrales, strukturinduzierendes Motiv wurde 9,9'-Spirobifluoren gewählt. Dieses Molekül ist leicht und vielfältig zu di- bzw. tetrafunktionellen Monomeren modifizierbar. Dabei wurden bestehende Synthesevorschriften modifiziert bzw. neue Vorschriften entwickelt. Ein erster Schwerpunkt innerhalb des Kapitels lag in der Synthese und Charakterisierung von löslichen, intrinsisch mikroporösen, aromatischen Polyamid und Polyimid. Es konnte gezeigt werden, dass das Beobachten von Mikroporosität stark von der molekularen Architektur und der Verarbeitung der Polymere abhängig ist. Die Charakterisierung der Porosität erfolgte unter Nutzung von Stickstoffsorption, Kleinwinkelröntgenstreuung und Molecular Modeling. Es konnte gezeigt werden, dass die Proben stark vom Umgebungsdruck abhängigen Deformationen unterliegen. Die starke Quellung der Proben während des Sorptionsvorgangs konnte durch Anwendung des "dual sorption" Modells, also dem Auftreten von Porenfüllung und dadurch induzierter Henry-Sorption, erklärt werden. Der zweite Schwerpunkt des Kapitels beschreibt die Synthese und Charakterisierung mikroporöser Polyamid- und Polyimidnetzwerke. Während Polyimidnetzwerke auf Spirobifluorenbasis ausgeprägte Mikroporosität und spezifische Oberflächen von ca. 1100 m²/g aufwiesen, war die Situation für entsprechende Polyamidnetzwerke abweichend. Mittels Stickstoffsorption konnte keine Mikroporosität nachgewiesen werden, jedoch konnte mittels SAXS eine innere Grenzfläche von ca. 300 m²/g nachgewiesen werden. Durch die in dieser Arbeit gezeigten Experimente kann die Grenze zwischen Polymeren mit hohem freien Volumen und mikroporösen Polymeren somit etwas genauer gezogen werden. ausgeprägte Mikroporosität kann nur in extrem steifen Strukturen nachgewiesen werden. Die Kombination der Konzepte "Mesoporosität durch Templatierung" und "Mikroporosität durch strukturierte Monomere" hatte ein hierarchisch strukturiertes Polybenzimidazol zum Ergebnis. Die Präsenz einer Strukturierung im molekularen Maßstab konnte SAXS bewiesen werden. Das so strukturierte Polybenzimidazol zeichnete sich durch eine höhere Protonenleitfähigkeit im Vergleich zu einem rein mesoporösen PBI aus. Der letzte Teil der Arbeit beschäftigte sich mit der Entwicklung einer neuen Synthesemethode zur Herstellung von Polybenzimidazol. Es konnte gezeigt werden, dass lineares PBI in einer eutektischen Salzschmelze aus Lithium- und Kaliumchlorid synthetisiert werden kann. Die Umsetzung der spirobifluorenbasierten Monomere zu löslichem oder vernetztem PBI ist in der Salzschmelze möglich.
In semi-arid savannah ecosystems, the vegetation structure and composition, i.e. the architecture of trees, shrubs, grass tussocks and herbaceous plants, offer a great variety of habitats and niches to sustain animal diversity. In the last decades intensive human land use practises like livestock farming have altered the vegetation in savannah ecosystems worldwide. Extensive grazing leads to a reduction of the perennial and herbaceous vegetation cover, which results in an increased availability of bare soil. Both, the missing competition with perennial grasses and the increase of bare soils favour shrub on open ground and lead to area-wide shrub encroachment. As a consequence of the altered vegetation structure and composition, the structural diversity declines. It has been shown that with decreasing structural diversity animal diversity decline across a variety of taxa. Knowledge on the effects of overgrazing on reptiles, which are an important part of the ecosystem, are missing. Furthermore, the impact of habitat degradation on factors of a species population dynamic and life history, e.g., birth rate, survival rate, predation risk, space requirements or behavioural adaptations are poorly known. Therefore, I investigated the impact of overgrazing on the reptile community in the southern Kalahari. Secondly I analysed population dynamics and the behaviour of the Spotted Sand Lizard, Pedioplanis l. lineoocellata. All four chapters clearly demonstrate that habitat degradation caused by overgrazing had a severe negative impact upon (i) the reptile community as a whole and (ii) on population parameters of Pedioplanis l. lineoocellata. Chapter one showed a significant decline of regional reptile diversity and abundance in degraded habitats. In chapter two I demonstrated that P. lineoocellata moves more frequently, spends more time moving and covers larger distances in degraded than in non-degraded habitats. In addition, home range size of the lizard species increases in degraded habitats as shown by chapter three. Finally, chapter four showed the negative impacts of overgrazing on several population parameters of P. lineoocellata. Absolute population size of adult and juvenile lizards, survival rate and birth rate are significantly lower in degraded habitats. Furthermore, the predation risk was greatly increased in degraded habitats. A combination of a variety of aspects can explain the negative impact of habitat degradation on reptiles. First, reduced prey availability negatively affects survival rate, the birth rate and overall abundance. Second, the loss of perennial plant cover leads to a loss of niches and to a reduction of opportunities to thermoregulate. Furthermore, a loss of cover and is associated with increased predation risk. A major finding of my thesis is that the lizard P. lineoocellata can alter its foraging strategy. Species that are able to adapt and change behaviour, such as P. lineoocellata can effectively buffer against changes in their environment. Furthermore, perennial grass cover can be seen as a crucial ecological component of the vegetation in the semi-arid savannah system of the southern Kalahari. If perennial grass cover is reduced to a certain degree reptile diversity will decline and most other aspects of reptile life history will be negatively influenced. Savannah systems are characterised by a mixture of trees, shrubs and perennial grasses. These three vegetation components determine the composition and structure of the vegetation and accordingly influence the faunal diversity. Trees are viewed as keystone structures and focal points of animal activity for a variety of species. Trees supply animals with shelter, shade and food and act as safe sites, nesting sites, observation posts and foraging sites. Recent research demonstrates a positive influence of shrub patches on animal diversity. Moreover, it would seem that intermediate shrub cover can also sustain viable populations in savannah landscapes as has been demonstrated for small carnivores and rodent species. The influence of perennial grasses on faunal diversity did not receive the same attention as the influence of trees and shrubs. In my thesis I didn’t explicitly measure the direct effects of perennial grasses but my results strongly imply that it has an important role. If the perennial grass cover is significantly depleted my results suggest it will negatively influence reptile diversity and abundance and on several populations parameters of P. lineoocellata. Perennial grass cover is associated with the highest prey abundance, reptile diversity and reptile abundance. It provides reptiles both a refuge from predators and opportunities to optimise thermoregulation. The relevance of each of the three vegetation structural elements is different for each taxa and species. In conclusion, I can all three major vegetation structures in the savannah system are important for faunal diversity.
Die Adipositas und ihre mitunter schwerwiegenden Auswirkungen nimmt in öffentlichen Diskussionen einen immer größeren Stellenwert ein. In Deutschland leiden neben 37 Millionen Erwachsenen derzeit rund 2 Millionen Kinder an Übergewicht oder Adipositas. Das Arbeitsbuch wendet sich an die Eltern betroffener Kinder. Erklärt wird die Entstehung der Adipositas, zudem sind Informationen zu gesunder Ernährung und deren Umsetzung im Alltag enthalten. Zusätzlich wird auf den wichtigen Faktor der Bewegung sowie eine mögliche erneute Gewichtszunahme eingegangen. Entwickelt wurde das Arbeitsbuch im Rahmen einer Studie und spricht die teilnehmenden Eltern an, deren Kinder sich aufgrund von Adipositas in einer Reha-Klinik befinden. Die enthaltenen Informationen und Alltagshilfen sind jedoch auch für alle anderen betroffenen Eltern relevant.
INTEGRAL tripled the number of super-giant high-mass X-ray binaries (sgHMXB) known in the Galaxy by revealing absorbed and fast transient (SFXT) systems. Quantitative constraints on the wind clumping of massive stars can be obtained from the study of the hard X-ray variability of SFXT. A large fraction of the hard X-ray emission is emitted in the form of flares with a typical duration of 3 ksec, frequency of 7 days and luminosity of $10^{36}$ erg/s. Such flares are most probably emitted by the interaction of a compact object orbiting at $\sim10~R_*$ with wind clumps ($10^{22 ... 23}$ g) representing a large fraction of the stellar mass-loss rate. The density ratio between the clumps and the inter-clump medium is $10^{2 ... 4}$. The parameters of the clumps and of the inter-clump medium, derived from the SFXT flaring behavior, are in good agreement with macro-clumping scenario and line-driven instability simulations. SFXT are likely to have larger orbital radius than classical sgHMXB.
Seit den Anfängen empirisch-neurowissenschaftlicher Forschung gilt Sprachkompetenz zuvorderst als eine Leistung der Hirnrinde (Kortex), jedoch wurden v. a. im Zuge sich verbessernder bildgebender Verfahren aphasische Syndrome auch nach Läsionen subkortikaler Hirnregionen, insbesondere der Basalganglien und des Thalamus nachgewiesen. Diese Strukturen liegen in der Tiefe des Gehirns und kommunizieren über weit gefächerte Faserverbindungen mit dem Kortex. In erster Linie werden den Basalganglien senso-motorische Kontrollfunktionen zugewiesen. Dementsprechend werden diverse Erkrankungen, die durch Störungen physiologischer Bewegungsabläufe gekennzeichnet sind (z. B. Morbus Parkinson, Chorea Huntington), auf Funktionsdefekte dieser Strukturen zurückgeführt. Der Thalamus wird häufig als Relaisstation des Informationsaustauschs zwischen anatomisch entfernten Arealen des Nervensystems aufgefasst. Basalganglien und Thalamus werden jedoch auch darüber hinausgehende Funktionen, z. B. zur Bereitstellung, Aufrechterhaltung und Auslenkung von Aufmerksamkeit bei der Bearbeitung kognitiver Aufgaben zugesprochen. In der vorliegenden Arbeit wurde mit elektrophysiologischen Methoden untersucht, ob auf der Ebene von Thalamus und Basalganglien kognitive Sprachleistungen, spezifisch der syntaktischen und semantischen Verarbeitung nachgewiesen werden können und inwieweit sich eventuell subkortikale von kortikaler Sprachverarbeitung unterscheidet. Die Untersuchung spezieller Sprachfunktionen der Basalganglien und des Thalamus ist im Rahmen der operativen Behandlung bewegungsgestörter Patienten mit der sog. Tiefenhirnstimulation (DBS = engl. Deep Brain Stimulation) möglich. Hierbei werden Patienten mit Morbus Parkinson Stimulationselektroden in den Nucleus subthalamicus (STN) implantiert. Bei Patienten mit generalisierten Dystonien erfolgt die Implantation in den Globus pallidus internus (GPI) und bei Patienten mit essentiellem Tremor in den Nucleus ventralis intermedius (VIM). STN und GPI sind Kernareale der Basalganglien, der VIM ist Teil des motorischen Systems. Nach der Implantation besteht die Möglichkeit, direkt von diesen Elektroden elektroenzephalographische (EEG)-Signale abzuleiten und diese mit simultan abgeleiteten Oberflächen-EEG zu vergleichen. In dieser Arbeit wurden DBS-Patienten aus allen genannten Gruppen in Bezug auf Sprachverständnisleistungen untersucht. Neben der Präsentation korrekter Sätze hörten die Patienten Sätze mit syntaktischen oder semantischen Fehlern. In verschiedenen Studien wurden an der Skalp-Oberfläche EKP-Komponenten (EKP = ereigniskorrelierte Potentiale) beschrieben, welche mit der Verarbeitung solcher Fehler in Verbindung gebracht werden. So verursachen syntaktische Phrasenstrukturverletzungen eine frühe links-anteriore Negativierung (ELAN). Dieser Komponente folgt eine späte Positivierung (P600), die mit Reanalyse und Reparaturmechanismen in Verbindung gebracht wird. Semantische Verletzungen evozieren eine breite Negativierung um 400ms (N400). In den thalamischen Ableitungen wurden zwei zusätzliche syntaktische fehlerbezogene Komponenten gefunden, die (i) ~ 80ms nach der Skalp-ELAN und (ii) ~ 70ms vor der Skalp-P600 auftraten. Bei semantischen Verletzungen wurde im Thalamus ein fehlerbezogenes Potential nachgewiesen, welches weitgehend parallel mit dem am Skalp gefundenen Muster verläuft. Aus den Ergebnissen der vorliegenden Studie folgt, dass der Thalamus spezifische Sprachfunktionen erfüllt. Komponenten, die Sprachverarbeitungsprozesse reflektieren, konnten in den Basalganglienstrukturen STN und GPI nicht identifiziert werden. Aufgrund der erhobenen Daten werden zwei getrennte Netzwerke für die Verarbeitung syntaktischer bzw. semantischer Fehler angenommen. In diesen Netzwerken scheint der Thalamus spezifische Aufgaben zu übernehmen. In einem ‚Syntaxnetzwerk’ kommunizieren frontale Hirnstrukturen unter Einbeziehung des Thalamus mit parietalen Hirnstrukturen. Dem Thalamus wurde eine Mediationsfunktion in der syntaktischen Reanalyse zugesprochen. In einem ‚Semantiknetzwerk’ waren keine eindeutig zuordenbaren Prozesse auf thalamischer Ebene nachweisbar. Es wurde eine unscharfe, jedoch aber spezifische Aktivierung des Thalamus über den gesamten Zeitraum der kortikalen semantischen Analyse gezeigt, welche als Integration verschiedener Analysemechanismen gewertet wurde.
Abenteuer Lesesprache : zum Aufbau interkomprehensiver Lesekompetenz in den romanischen Sprachen

Plurilinguismus oder „English only“? Als politische Institution, in der es nur sprachliche und kulturelle Minderheiten gibt und geben wird, folgt die Europäische Union einer plurilinguistischen Orientierung, womit ein erheblicher Bedarf an Sprach- und Kulturkenntnissen (und deren Erwerb) verbunden ist. Grosso modo umfasst die EU drei große indoeuropäische Sprachfamilien: die romanische, slawische und germanische. Innerhalb jeder dieser Sprachgruppen gibt es etymologisch bedingte Gemeinsamkeiten, die v.a. die Phonologie, Morphologie, Lexik und Syntax betreffen. Die Kenntnis dieser synchron erkennbaren gemeinsamen Elemente bzw. ihrer einzelsprachlich äquivalenten Varianten ermöglicht transferhaftes Lernen im Sinne der Interkomprehension in Sprachfamilien. Grundlage der romanischen Interkomprehension ist das „Vulgärlatein“, dessen Spezifik v.a. gegenüber den heutigen Sprachen der Romania herausgestellt wird. Den lerntheoretischen Hintergrund der Interkomprehension bilden die Interlanguage-Hypothese, die Annahme mentaler Netzwerke sowie die verschiedenen Verarbeitungsstadien des interkomprehensiven Spracherwerbs: Spontangrammatik, Mehrsprachenspeicher und didaktischer Monitor. Zudem wird die Rolle mutter- und fremdsprachlicher Transferbasen sowie die der einzelnen Transferdomänen (Form, Inhalt, Funktion, Pragmatik, Didaktik) erläutert. Schwerpunkte der vorliegenden Arbeit bilden die Motivation und die einzelnen Verarbeitungsstadien beim interkomprehensiven Lesen, wobei dem sprachlichen Vorwissen der Lesenden besondere Bedeutung zukommt. Der vorgeschlagene Leitfaden für das erschließende Lesen umfasst drei Gesamtlektüren und berücksichtigt dabei sowohl sprachsystematische als auch textlinguistische Kriterien. Zur Illustration dient ein aktueller Text in Nissart, der auch verschiedenen Probanden vorgelegt wurde. Die Analyse ergab, dass ein globales Textverständnis durch die Kenntnis einer romanischen Sprache spontan gegeben ist, dieses Globalverständnis im Einzelnen jedoch deutlich differieren kann. Am Ende der Arbeit werden mit der Darstellung der strukturellen Besonderheiten des Rumänischen die Grenzen interkomprehensiven Leseverständnisses gezeigt, aber auch der erleichterte Einstieg in die Sprachproduktion dargelegt.
The Arctic plays a key role in Earth’s climate system as global warming is predicted to be most pronounced at high latitudes and because one third of the global carbon pool is stored in ecosystems of the northern latitudes. In order to improve our understanding of the present and future carbon dynamics in climate sensitive permafrost ecosystems, the present study concentrates on investigations of microbial controls of methane fluxes, on the activity and structure of the involved microbial communities, and on their response to changing environmental conditions. For this purpose an integrated research strategy was applied, which connects trace gas flux measurements to soil ecological characterisation of permafrost habitats and molecular ecological analyses of microbial populations. Furthermore, methanogenic archaea isolated from Siberian permafrost have been used as potential keystone organisms for studying and assessing life under extreme living conditions. Long-term studies on methane fluxes were carried out since 1998. These studies revealed considerable seasonal and spatial variations of methane emissions for the different landscape units ranging from 0 to 362 mg m-2 d-1. For the overall balance of methane emissions from the entire delta, the first land cover classification based on Landsat images was performed and applied for an upscaling of the methane flux data sets. The regionally weighted mean daily methane emissions of the Lena Delta (10 mg m-2 d-1) are only one fifth of the values calculated for other Arctic tundra environments. The calculated annual methane emission of the Lena Delta amounts to about 0.03 Tg. The low methane emission rates obtained in this study are the result of the used remotely sensed high-resolution data basis, which provides a more realistic estimation of the real methane emissions on a regional scale. Soil temperature and near soil surface atmospheric turbulence were identified as the driving parameters of methane emissions. A flux model based on these variables explained variations of the methane budget corresponding to continuous processes of microbial methane production and oxidation, and gas diffusion through soil and plants reasonably well. The results show that the Lena Delta contributes significantly to the global methane balance because of its extensive wetland areas. The microbiological investigations showed that permafrost soils are colonized by high numbers of microorganisms. The total biomass is comparable to temperate soil ecosystems. Activities of methanogens and methanotrophs differed significantly in their rates and distribution patterns along both the vertical profiles and the different investigated soils. The methane production rates varied between 0.3 and 38.9 nmol h-1 g-1, while the methane oxidation ranged from 0.2 to 7.0 nmol h-1 g-1. Phylogenetic analyses of methanogenic communities revealed a distinct diversity of methanogens affiliated to Methanomicrobiaceae, Methanosarcinaceae and Methanosaetaceae, which partly form four specific permafrost clusters. The results demonstrate the close relationship between methane fluxes and the fundamental microbiological processes in permafrost soils. The microorganisms do not only survive in their extreme habitat but also can be metabolic active under in situ conditions. It was shown that a slight increase of the temperature can lead to a substantial increase in methanogenic activity within perennially frozen deposits. In case of degradation, this would lead to an extensive expansion of the methane deposits with their subsequent impacts on total methane budget. Further studies on the stress response of methanogenic archaea, especially Methanosarcina SMA-21, isolated from Siberian permafrost, revealed an unexpected resistance of the microorganisms against unfavourable living conditions. A better adaptation to environmental stress was observed at 4 °C compared to 28 °C. For the first time it could be demonstrated that methanogenic archaea from terrestrial permafrost even survived simulated Martian conditions. The results show that permafrost methanogens are more resistant than methanogens from non-permafrost environments under Mars-like climate conditions. Microorganisms comparable to methanogens from terrestrial permafrost can be seen as one of the most likely candidates for life on Mars due to their physiological potential and metabolic specificity.
Both the stoichiometry and complex stability constants of crown ether complexes with metal ions have been determined by examining gradual changes in their diffusional behavior in nonaqueous solution. Diffusion coefficients, D, were evaluated by pulsed field gradient (PFG) NMR titration experiments whilst complex stability constants were determined by nonlinear curve-fitting procedures, D versus csol., which also allow the treatment of multiple complexation equilibria (1:1 to 1:2 stoichiometries). Differences in the diffusion coefficients of the various free crown ethers with respect to their metal ion complexes indicate great sensitivity to both conformational changes and changes in molecular size upon complexation.
An investigation of the conformational landscape of 1,3-dithian-2-yl bearing porphyrins and the rotational behavior of the dithianyl substituents in meso position was carried out by variable-temperature (VT) NMR spectroscopy. Additionally, theoretical results for alternative conformations and energy barriers were obtained by molecular modeling. The study revealed different NH trans tautomers with regard to the orientation of the dithianyl ligands for the free base porphyrins 1-3. Relatively ruffled porphyrin core conformations were established for the transition states of the dithianyl rotation, resulting in a lower rotational energy barrier for the nickel(II) complex 4 compared to that of the free base systems. The data obtained and the first depiction of a rotational transition state for the rotation of bulky meso-alkyl substituents illustrate the close structural interplay between meso-alkyl substituents and the macrocycle conformation in porphyrins.

Mafic magmatism in the Eastern Cordillera and Putumayo Basin, Colombia : causes and consequences

The Eastern Cordillera of Colombia is mainly composed of sedimentary rocks deposited since early Mesozoic times. Magmatic rocks are scarce. They are represented only by a few locally restricted occurrences of dykes and sills of mafic composition presumably emplaced in the Cretaceous and of volcanic rocks of Neogene age. This work is focused on the study of the Cretaceous magmatism with the intention to understand the processes causing the genesis of these rocks and their significance in the regional tectonic setting of the Northern Andes. The magmatic rocks cut the Cretaceous sedimentary succession of black shales and marlstones that crop out in both flanks of the Eastern Cordillera. The studied rocks were classified as gabbros (Cáceres, Pacho, Rodrigoque), tonalites (Cáceres, La Corona), diorites and syenodiorites (La Corona), pyroxene-hornblende gabbros (Pacho), and pyroxene-hornblendites (Pajarito). The gabbroic samples are mainly composed of plagioclase, clinopyroxene, and/or green to brown hornblende, whereas the tonalitic rocks are mainly composed of plagioclase and quartz. The samples are highly variable in crystal sizes from fine- to coarse-grained. Accessory minerals such as biotite, titanite and zircon are present. Some samples are characterized by moderate to strong alteration, and show the presence of epidote, actinolite and chlorite. Major and trace element compositions of the rocks as well as the rock-forming minerals show significant differences in the geochemical and petrological characteristics for the different localities, suggesting that this magmatism does not result from a single melting process. The wide compositional spectrum of trace elements in the intrusions is characteristic for different degrees of mantle melting and enrichment of incompatible elements. MORB- and OIB-like compositions suggest at least two different sources of magma with tholeiitic and alkaline affinity, respectively. Evidence of slab-derived fluids can be recognized in the western part of the basin reflected in higher Ba/Nb and Sr/P ratios and also in the Sr radiogenic isotope ratios, which is possible a consequence of metasomatism in the mantle due to processes related to the presence of a previously subducted slab. The trace element patterns evidence an extensional setting in the Cretaceous basin producing a continental rift, with continental crust being stretched until oceanic crust was generated in the last stages of this extension. Electron microprobe analyses (EMPA) of the major elements and synchrotron radiation micro-X-ray fluorescence (μ-SRXRF) analyses of the trace element composition of the early crystallized minerals of the intrusions (clinopyroxenes and amphiboles) reflect the same dual character that has been found in the bulk-rock analyses. Despite the observed alteration of the rocks, the mineral composition shows evidences for an enriched and a relative depleted magma source. Even the normalization of the trace element concentrations of clinopyroxenes and amphiboles to the whole rock nearly follows the pattern predicted by published partition coefficients, suggesting that the alteration did not change the original trace element compositions of the investigated minerals. Sr-Nd-Pb isotope data reveal a large isotopic variation but still suggest an initial origin of the magmas in the mantle. Samples have moderate to highly radiogenic compositions of 143Nd/144Nd and high 87Sr/86Sr ratios and follow a trend towards enriched mantle compositions, like the local South American Paleozoic crust. The melts experienced variable degrees of contamination by sediments, crust, and seawater. The age corrected Pb isotope ratios show two separated groups of samples. This suggests that the chemical composition of the mantle below the Northern Andes has been modified by the interaction with other components resulting in a heterogeneous combination of materials of diverse origins. Although previous K/Ar age dating have shown that the magmatism took place in the Cretaceous, the high error of the analyses and the altered nature of the investigated minerals did preclude reliable interpretations. In the present work 40Ar/39Ar dating was carried out. The results show a prolonged history of magmatism during the Cretaceous over more than 60 Ma, from ~136 to ~74 Ma (Hauterivian to Campanian). Pre-Cretaceous rifting phases occurred in the Triassic-Jurassic for the western part of the basin and in the Paleozoic for the eastern part. Those previous rifting phases are decisive mechanisms controlling the localization and composition of the Cretaceous magmatism. Therefore, it is the structural position and not the age of the intrusions which preconditions the kind of magmatism and the degree of melting. The divergences on ages are the consequence of the segmentation of the basin in several sub-basins which stretching, thermal evolution and subsidence rate evolved independently. The first hypothesis formulated at the beginning of this investigation was that the Cretaceous gabbroic intrusions identified in northern Ecuador could be correlated with the intrusions described in the Eastern Cordillera. The mafic occurrences should mark the location of the most subsiding places of the large Cretaceous basin in northern South America. For this reason, the gabbroic intrusions cutting the Cretaceous succession in the Putumayo Basin, southern Colombia, were investigated. The results of the studies were quite unexpected. The petrologic and geochemical character of the magmatic rocks indicates subduction-related magmatism. K/Ar dating of amphibole yields a Late Miocene to Pliocene age (6.1 ± 0.7 Ma) for the igneous event in the basin. Although there is no correlation between this magmatic event and the Cretaceous magmatic event, the data obtained has significant tectonic and economic implications. The emplacement of the Neogene gabbroic rocks coincides with the late Miocene/Pliocene Andean orogenic uplift as well as with a significant pulse of hydrocarbon generation and expulsion.
Ziel dieser Arbeit war es, die Stickstoff- und Phosphorprozesse im nordostdeutschen Tiefland detailliert zu untersuchen und Handlungsoptionen hinsichtlich der Landnutzung zur nachhaltigen Steuerung der Stickstoff- und Phosphoreinträge in die Fließgewässer aufzuzeigen. Als Grundvoraussetzung für die Modellierung des Nährstoffhaushaltes mussten zunächst die hydrologischen Prozesse und die Abflüsse für die Einzugsgebiete validiert werden. Dafür wurde in dieser Arbeit das ökohydrologische Modell SWIM verwendet. Die Abflussmodellierung umfasste den Zeitraum 1991 - 2000. Die Ergebnisse dazu zeigen, dass SWIM in der Lage war, die hydrologischen Prozesse in den Untersuchungsgebieten adäquat wiederzugeben. Auf der Grundlage der Modellierung des Wasserhaushaltes wurden mit SWIM die Stoffumsatzprozesse für den Zeitraum 1996 - 2000 simuliert. Um dabei besonders das Prozessgeschehen im Tiefland zu berücksichtigen, war die Erweiterung von SWIM um einen Ammonium-Pool mit dessen Umsatzprozessen erforderlich. Außerdem wurde der Prozess der Nährstoffversickerung so ergänzt, dass neben Nitrat auch Ammonium und Phosphat durch das gesamte Bodenprofil verlagert und über die Abflusskomponenten zum Gebietsauslass transportiert werden können. Mit diesen Modellerweiterungen konnten die Stickstoff und Phosphorprozesse in den Untersuchungsgebieten gut abgebildet werden. Mit dem so validierten Modell wurden weitere Anwendungen ermöglicht. Nährstoffsimulationen für den Zeitraum 1981 bis 2000 dienten der Untersuchung des abnehmenden Trends in den Nährstoffkonzentrationen der Nuthe. Die Untersuchungsergebnisse lassen deutlich erkennen, dass sich die Konzentrationen nach 1990 hauptsächlich auf Grund der Reduzierung der Einträge aus punktförmigen Quellen und Rieselfeldern verringert haben. Weitere Modellrechnungen zur Herkunft der Nährstoffe haben ergeben, dass Nitrat überwiegend aus diffusen Quellen, Ammonium und Phosphat dagegen aus punktförmigen Quellen stammen. Als besonders sensitiv auf die Modellergebnisse haben sich die Parameter zu Landnutzung und -management und die Durchwurzelungstiefe der Pflanzen herausgestellt. Abschließend wurden verschiedene Landnutzungsszenarien angewendet. Die Ergebnisse zu den Szenariorechnungen zeigen, dass fast alle vorgegebenen Landnutzungsszenarien zu einer Verringerung der Stickstoff- bzw. Phosphoremissionen führten. Die Anwendung von Szenarien, die alle relevanten Zielvorgaben und Empfehlungen zum Ressourcenschutz berücksichtigen, zeigen die größten Veränderungen.

Einerseits führt in Entwicklungsländern die Privatisierung von Wasserbetrieben zu Kostensenkungen. Andererseits verändert sie bisherige Möglichkeiten der Teilnahme. Diese wiederspruchsvollen Entwicklungen diskutiert die Autorin an Beispielen aus Südamerika und Südafrika. Künftige Privatisierungen im Bereich Wasser sollten dauerhafte Formen der Mitwirkung ermöglichen.
