Der Beitrag “Humboldteanisierung des Westens? Die Bedeutung der Reise Humboldts für Europa und Lateinamerika” behandelt der preußischen emprischen Universalgelehrten, in Übereinstimmung mit dem von Ottmar Ette entwickelten Konzept, als einen, wenn nicht den wichtigsten Begründer der westlichen Moderne. Im Gegensatz zu den bekannten Gründern der Moderne (Descartes, Kant, Buffon, Schiller, Hegel, Marx ... etc.) war Humboldt Empiriker und Globaldenker und er tat dies auf transkulturelle Weise, manchmal auch schon auf interkulturelle Weise; allerdings meist auf Basis der römisch-klassizistischen Denktradition und Ästhetik Europas. Der Beitrag arbeitet drei Wissenstypen Humboldts heraus und versucht zu zeigen, dass der Universalismus Humboldt wichtige interkulturelle Grundlagen in der Kommunikation mit amerikanischen Gelehrten und im amerikanischen Empirismus (“lokales Wissen”) hat. Die Bedeutung einer solchen Konzeption der Humboldt-Reise zeigt sich – in der Negierung – in den gegenwärtigen Debatten um Diasporas und “Race” im atlantischen Westen (“Black Atlantic”). Humboldt Kenntnisse der amerikanischen Sklavereien und seine absolute Verurteilung der Sklaverei ist dabei nicht präsent.
Im zweiten Teil zeigt der Beitrag mögliche Lesarten der Humboldt-Tagebücher, indem er “imaginäre Humboldt-Essays” konstruiert.
Ecological and evolutionary dynamics can occur on similar timescales. However, theoretical predictions of how rapid evolution can affect ecological dynamics are inconclusive and often depend on untested model assumptions. Here we report that rapid prey evolution in response to oscillating predator density affects predator-prey (rotifer-algal) cycles in laboratory microcosms. Our experiments tested explicit predictions from a model for our system that allows prey evolution. We verified the predicted existence of an evolutionary tradeoff between algal competitive ability and defence against consumption, and examined its effects on cycle dynamics by manipulating the evolutionary potential of the prey population. Single-clone algal cultures (lacking genetic variability) produced short cycle periods and typical quarter-period phase lags between prey and predator densities, whereas multi-clonal (genetically variable) algal cultures produced long cycles with prey and predator densities nearly out of phase, exactly as predicted. These results confirm that prey evolution can substantially alter predator-prey dynamics, and therefore that attempts to understand population oscillations in nature cannot neglect potential effects from ongoing rapid evolution.
From the stem bark of Erythrina burttii, a new isoflavone, 5,2',4'-trihydroxy-7-methoxy-6-(3- methylbut-2-enyl)isoflavone (trivial name, 7-O-methylluteone) and a new flavanone, 5,7-dihydroxy-4'-methoxy- 3'-(3-methylbutadienyl)-5'-(3-methylbut-2-enyl)flavanone (trivial name, burttinonedehydrate) along with three known isoflavonoids (8-prenylluteone, 3-O-methylcalopocarpin and genistein) were isolated. The structures were detd. on the basis of spectroscopic evidence.
We present the first separate spectra of both components of the small-separation double QSO HE 0512-3329 obtained with HST/STIS in the optical and near UV. The similarities especially of the emission line profiles and redshifts strongly suggest that this system really consists of two lensed images of one and the same source. The emission line flux ratios are assumed to be unaffected by microlensing and are used to study the differential extinction effects caused by the lensing galaxy. Fits of empirical laws show that the extinction properties seem to be different on both lines of sight. With our new results, HE 0512-3329 becomes one of the few extragalactic systems which show the 2175 Å absorption feature, although the detection is only marginal. We then correct the continuum flux ratio for extinction to obtain the differential microlensing signal. Since this may still be significantly affected by variability and time-delay effects, no detailled analysis of the microlensing is possible at the moment. This is the first time that differential extinction and microlensing could be separated unambiguously. We show that, at least in HE 0512-3329, both effects contribute significantly to the spectral differences and one cannot be analysed without taking into account the other. For lens modelling purposes, the flux ratios can only be used after correcting for both effects.
We present a determination of the optical/UV AGN luminosity function and its evolution, based on a large sample of faint (R < 24) QSOs identified in the COMBO-17 survey. Using multi-band photometry in 17 filters within 350 nm <~ lambdaobs <~ 930 nm, we could simultaneously determine photometric redshifts with an accuracy of sigmaz <0.03 and obtain spectral energy distributions. The redshift range covered by the sample is 1.2 < z < 4.8, which implies that even at z =~ 3, the sample reaches below luminosities corresponding to MB = -23, conventionally employed to distinguish between Seyfert galaxies and quasars. We clearly detect a broad plateau-like maximum of quasar activity around z =~ 2 and map out the smooth turnover between z =~ 1 and z =~ 4. The shape of the LF is characterised by some mild curvature, but no sharp ``break'' is present within the range of luminosities covered. Using only the COMBO-17 data, the evolving LF can be adequately described by either a pure density evolution (PDE) or a pure luminosity evolution (PLE) model. However, the absence of a strong L*-like feature in the shape of the LF inhibits a robust distinction between these modes. We present a robust estimate for the integrated UV luminosity generation by AGN as a function of redshift. We find that the LF continues to rise even at the lowest luminosities probed by our survey, but that the slope is sufficiently shallow that the contribution of low-luminosity AGN to the UV luminosity density is negligible. Although our sample reaches much fainter flux levels than previous data sets, our results on space densities and LF slopes are completely consistent with extrapolations from recent major surveys such as SDSS and 2QZ.
Integral-field spectrophotometry of the quadruple QSO HE 0435-1223 : Evidence for microlensing

We present the first spatially resolved spectroscopic observations of the recently discovered quadruple QSO and gravitational lens HE 0435-1223. Using the Potsdam Multi-Aperture Spectrophotometer (PMAS), we show that all four QSO components have very similar but not identical spectra. In particular, the spectral slopes of components A, B, and D are indistinguishable, implying that extinction due to dust plays no major role in the lensing galaxy. While also the emission line profiles are identical within the error bars, as expected from lensing, the equivalent widths show significant differences between components. Most likely, microlensing is responsible for this phenomenon. This is also consistent with the fact that component D, which shows the highest relative continuum level, has brightened by 0.07 mag since Dec. 2001. We find that the emission line flux ratios between the components are in better agreement with simple lens models than broad band or continuum measurements, but that the discrepancies between model and data are still unacceptably large. Finally, we present a detection of the lensing galaxy, although this is close to the limits of the data. Comparing with a model galaxy spectrum, we obtain a redshift estimate of zlens=0.44+/- 0.02.

Beobachtungen bei nationalen und internationalen Schwimmwettkämpfen haben ergeben, dass sich die Starttechnik in den vergangenen Jahren zunächst vom ehemals dominierenden Grabstart zum Trackstart verändert hatte. Bei den Europameisterschaften 2002 in Berlin setzte jedoch eine Trendumkehr ein. An sieben Hochleistungsschwimmern wird untersucht, ob das biomechanische Prinzip der optimalen Tendenz im Beschleunigungsverlauf bei der Ausführung von Grab- und Trackstarts optimal genutzt wird.

1. This is a discussion of the applicability to the phytoplankton of the concepts of 'Plant Functional Types' (PFTs) and 'Functional Diversity' (FD), which originated in terrestrial plant ecology. 2. Functional traits driving the performance of phytoplankton species reflect important processes such as growth, sedimentation, grazing losses and nutrient acquisition. 3. This paper presents an objective, mathematical way of assigning PFTs and measuring FD. Ecologists can use this new approach to investigate general hypotheses (e.g. the intermediate disturbance hypothesis (IDH), the insurance hypothesis and synchronicity phenomena), since, for example, in its original formulation the IDH makes its predictions based on FD rather than species diversity.

Together with their wives Otto and Richard Schomburgk arrived in Port Adelaide (South Australia) on August 16th 1849. The essay looks at how these two brothers, who had received their scientific training and promotion in the circle surrounding Alexander von Humboldt, reacted to the unfamiliar conditions in the young British colony. Some indication will be given as to the differences between the Schomburgk brothers treatment of the natural resources of the new colony and that of the English colonists of the time.

Biosensors which make use of the high specificity of enzymes, antibodies, and nucleic acids have been described for detection of numerous metabolites, hormones, and nucleic acid sequences. In addition to biological components nowadays biomimetic recognition molecules are also used. Especially antibodies, aptamers, and molecular imprints are promising biomimetics. They could broaden the range of detectable analytes and could increase the functional stability of the sensor. In this publication we describe the generation of biomimetic antibodies and biomimetic molecular imprints for binding creatinine and for hydrolyzing phenylcarbamates to be used in electrochemical sensors.

Species such as Dreissena polymorpha sometimes contribute substantially in the transfer of primary to secondary production. During the ontogenetic cycle, the reproductive investment of adult mussels is one of the main parameters that affect recruitment success. We studied how food quality and temperature affect the reproductive investment in term of egg mass of D. polymorpha in a lake by sampling mussels monthly from 4 m and 15 m depths. Temperature affected reproduction directly and also indirectly through the food. To assess whether temperature and/or food conditions led to the differences observed in mussels sampled from the two depths, mussels were reared in the laboratory under two different temperature regimes for 3 months, simulating the temperature of the lake at 4 m and 15 m depth. Possible effects of food quality were tested at each temperature using four diets differing in fatty acid composition. Temperature played an important role as a trigger for spawning, and the type of diet clearly affected the reproductive investment. When the heterokont chromophyte alga Nannochloropsis limnetica, which is rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) and long-chained PUFAs (>C18), was fed to mussels, an increased egg mass was obtained. This result was in contrast to that found when the green alga Scenedesmus obliquus and the cyanobacterium Aphanothece sp., both of which are deficient in long-chained PUFAs, were offered as food to the mussels. Such a PUFA-dependent food quality may affect reproduction in lakes. Food quality effects vary seasonally in a lake and may be most important in summer, when low-food- quality green algae and cyanobacteria are abundant. The low biochemical quality of these blooms may affect at least the later period of gametogenesis of D. polymorpha, which reproduces from June to August.
Settlement on suitable substrata under favourable environmental conditions is an important factor for a successful recruitment of adult populations of Dreissena polymorpha. Therefore, the pattern of settlement of zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha) larvae at different depths was studied in Lake Constance. Maximum densities of larvae and newly settled juvenile mussels were observed at 4m depth, while only single settlement episodes were recorded at greater depths (15 m and 30 m). Temperature fluctuation was used as a surrogate parameter for internal seiches. Biotic and abiotic parameters were subjected to a principal component analysis (PCA). The tight coupling of the internal seiches, larval abundance and settlement at 4-m depth vs. the lack of coupling of the latter two variables at greater depths indicated that water currents transported settling larvae to the substrata at greater depth. Our data suggest that physical factors, such as boundary mixing and internal seiches, should be considered as sources of variability in settlement.
We study frequency selectivity in noise-induced subthreshold signal processing in a system with many noise- supported stochastic attractors which are created due to slow variable diffusion between identical excitable elements. Such a coupling provides coexisting of several average periods distinct from that of an isolated oscillator and several phase relations between elements. We show that the response of the coupled elements under different noise levels can be significantly enhanced or reduced by forcing some elements in resonance with these new frequencies which correspond to appropriate phase relations

This paper reports the results of a corpus investigation on case conflicts in German argument free relative constructions. We investigate how corpus frequencies reflect the relative markedness of free relative and correlative constructions, the relative markedness of different case conflict configurations, and the relative markedness of different conflict resolution strategies. Section 1 introduces the conception of markedness as used in Optimality Theory. Section 2 introduces the facts about German free relative clauses, and section 3 presents the results of the corpus study. By and large, markedness and frequency go hand in hand. However, configurations at the highest end of the markedness scale rarely show up in corpus data, and for the configuration at the lowest end we found an unexpected outcome: the more marked structure is preferred.
We investigate the relationship between the loss of synchronization and the onset of shadowing breakdown via unstable dimension variability in complex systems. In the neighborhood of the critical transition to strongly nonhyperbolic behavior, the system undergoes on-off intermittency with respect to the synchronization state. There are potentially severe consequences of these facts on the validity of the computer-generated trajectories obtained from dynamical systems whose synchronization manifolds share the same nonhyperbolic properties
Motivated by the possible importance of OBrO in atmospheric photochemistry, multireference configuration interaction calculations of the low-lying excited states were carried out to obtain information about the electronic vertical spectrum up to excitation energies of about 6 eV from the ground state, including the transition dipole moments, and about possible photodissociation pathways, based on one-dimensional cuts through the potential energy surfaces for dissociation into BrO + O and Br + O2, respectively. In addition, for probing the angle dependence the bending potentials were also calculated.
This article discusses the problem why the English language used in Ireland ("Irish English") as the second national language, has to date enjoyed so little prestige among everyday users of it, whereas it found enthusiastic recognition among Anglo-Irish writers since the beginning of the 19c. While no educated speaker of Irish English would target an RP pronunciation any more, the use of Irish English grammar and lexis is still stigmatised as smacking of the "brogue." The hypothesis is advanced that, in spite of its independence since 1921 and its "Celtic Tiger" economy since entry into the EU in the 70s, the Republic of Ireland has still not fully entered the post-colonial stage in matters of language and education, where pride in Identity and Otherness is reflected in the conscious use and engineering of a nationally distinctive variety of English, such as in Australia, New Zealand or Canada.There is still no national dictionary of Irish English, no national grammar, no national broadcasting and TV handbook, no national dictionary of Irish English. The title of the article quotes from a publication which attests to the strong linguistic minority complex which many Irish people still seem to suffer from.
Variations in the temporal and spatial distribution of solar radiation caused by orbital changes provide a partial explanation for the observed long-term fluctuations in African lake levels. The understanding of such relationships is essential for designing climate-prediction models for the tropics. Our assessment of the nature and timing of East African climate change is based on lake-level fluctuations of Lake Naivasha in the Central Kenya Rift (0°55'S 36°20'E), inferred from sediment characteristics, diatoms, authigenic mineral assemblages and 17 single-crystal 40Ar/39Ar age determinations. Assuming that these fluctuations reflect climate changes, the Lake Naivasha record demonstrates that periods of increased humidity in East Africa mainly followed maximum equatorial solar radiation in March or September. Interestingly, the most dramatic change in the Naivasha Basin occurred as early as 146 kyr BP and the highest lake level was recorded at about 139 to 133 kyr BP. This is consistent with other well-dated low-latitude climate records, but does not correspond to peaks in Northern Hemisphere summer insolation as the trigger for the ice- age cycles. The Naivasha record therefore provides evidence for low-latitude forcing of the ice-age climate cycles.
Present erosion and sediment flux in the semi-arid intramontane Santa Maria Basin, NW Argentina are compared with conditions during a period of wetter and more variable climate at about 30,000 14C yrs ago. The results suggest that the influence of climate change on the overall erosional sediment budget is significant, mainly because of a change in the erosion regime coupled with an increase in mass movements. The most effective mechanism to increase landslide activity in this environment is a highly variable climate on inter-annual timescales. In contrast, Quaternary changes in erosional budgets due to variations in moisture regimes is small in the Santa Maria Basin. Since the magnitude of a potential increase in background erosion as well as enhanced landsliding is smaller than typical levels of uncertainty of erosional budgets for such large basins, it is not likely that climate-driven erosional unloading can influence tectonic style and rates in this semi-arid environment on time scales of several 103 to 104 years.
Multiple landslide clusters record quaternary climate changes in the northwestern Argentine andes

The chronology of multiple landslide deposits and related lake sediments in the semi-arid eastern Argentine Cordillera suggests that major mass movements cluster in two time periods during the Quaternary, i.e. between 40 and 25 and after 5 14C kyr BP. These clusters may correspond to the Minchin (maximum at around 28-27 14C kyr BP) and Titicaca wet periods (after 3.9 14C kyr BP). The more humid conditions apparently caused enhanced landsliding in this environment. In contrast, no landslide-related damming and associated lake sediments occurred during the Coipasa (11.5- 10 14C yr BP) and Tauca wet periods (14.5-11 14C yr BP). The two clusters at 40-25 and after 5 14C kyr BP may correspond to periods where the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and Tropical Atlantic Sea Surface Temperature Variability (TAV) were active. This, however, was not the case during the Coipasa and Tauca wet periods. Lake-balance modelling of a landslide-dammed lake suggests a 10-15% increase in precipitation and a 3-4 ° C decrease in temperature at ~30 14C kyr BP as compared to the present. In addition, time-series analysis reveals a strong ENSO and TAV during that time. The landslide clusters in northwestern Argentina are therefore best explained by periods of more humid and more variable climates.
We present a detailed study of the effects of gravitational microlensing on compact and distant gamma-ray blazars. These objects have gamma-ray-emitting regions that are small enough to be affected by microlensing effects produced by stars lying in intermediate galaxies. We compute the gravitational magnification taking into account effects of the lensing and show that, whereas the innermost gamma-ray spheres can be significantly magnified, there is little magnification either for very high gamma-ray energies or for lower (radio) frequencies (because these wavelengths are emitted from larger regions). We analyse the temporal evolution of the gamma-ray magnification for sources moving in a caustic pattern field, where the combined effects of thousands of stars are taken into account using a numerical technique. We propose that some of the unidentified gamma-ray sources (particularly some of those lying at high galactic latitude with gamma-ray statistical properties that are very similar to detected gamma-ray blazars) are indeed the result of gravitational lensing magnification of background undetected active galactic nuclei (AGN). This is partly supported from a statistical point of view: we show herein as well, using the latest information from the third EGRET catalogue, that high-latitude gamma-ray sources have similar averaged properties to already detected gamma-ray AGN. Some differences between both samples, regarding the mean flux level, could also be understood within the lensing model. With an adequate selection of lensing parameters, it is possible to explain a variety of gamma-ray light curves with different time-scales, including non-variable sources. The absence of strong radio counterparts could be naturally explained by differential magnification in the extended source formalism.
The fructose-1,6-bis(phosphate) aldolase isologous tetramer tightly associates through two different subunit interfaces defined by its 222 symmetry. Both single- and double-interfacial mutant aldolases have a destabilized quaternary structure, but there is little effect on the catalytic activity. These enzymes are however thermolabile. This study demonstrates the temperature-dependent dissociation of the mutant enzymes and determines the dissociation free energies of both mutant and native aldolase. Subunit dissociation is measured by sedimentation equilibrium in the analytical ultracentrifuge. At 25C the tetramerdimer dissociation constants for each single-mutant enzyme are similar, about 10 -6 M. For the double-mutant enzyme, sedimentation velocity experiments on sucrose density gradients support a tetramermonomer equilibrium. Furthermore, sedimentation equilibrium experiments determined a dissociation constant of 10- 15 M3 for the double-mutant enzyme. By the same methods the upper limit for the dissociation constant of wild-type aldolase A is approximately 10-28 M3, which indicates an extremely stable tetramer. The thermodynamic values describing monomer-tetramer and dimer-tetramer equilibria are analyzed with regard to possible cooperative interaction between the two subunit interfaces.
Mixotrophs combine resource use to outcompete specialists: Implications for aquatic food webs

The majority of species can be grouped into those relying solely on photosynthesis (phototrophy) or those relying solely on the assimilation of organic substances (heterotrophy) to meet their requirements for energy and carbon. However, a special life history trait exists in which organisms combine both phototrophy and heterotrophy. Such 'mixotrophy' is a widespread phenomenon in aquatic habitats and is observed in many protozoan and metazoan organisms. The strategy requires investment in both photosynthetic and heterotrophic cellular apparatus, but the benefits must outweigh these costs. In accordance with the mechanistic resource competition theory, laboratory experiments revealed that pigmented mixotrophs combined light and prey as substitutable resources. Thereby, they reduced prey abundance below the critical food concentration of competing specialist grazers [Rothhaupt, K. O. (1996) Ecology 77, 716-724]. Here, we demonstrate for the first time the important consequences of this strategy for an aquatic community. In the illuminated surface strata of a lake, mixotrophs reduced prey abundance so steeply that grazers from higher trophic levels, consuming both the mixotrophs and their prey, could not persist. Thus, the mixotrophs escaped from both competition and grazing, and remained dominant. Furthermore, the mixotrophs structured the prey abundance along the vertical light gradient creating low densities near the surface and a pronounced maximum of their algal prey at depth. Such deep algal accumulations are typical features of nutrient poor aquatic habitats, previously explained by resource availability. We hypothesize instead that the mixotrophic grazing strategy is responsible for deep algal accumulations in many aquatic environments.
El erudito alemán Alejandro de Humboldt que visitó México en 1803, desarolló en favor de una interpretación científica muchos esfuerzos para preservar los restos del “Museo histórico indiano” recolectado medio siglo antes por el italiano Lorenzo Boturini Benaduci, y confiscado por la administración virreinal. El destino del poco afortunado coleccionista, sus ideas y el fracaso de sus intenciones provocaron una nueva búsqueda de los motivos y los resultados. Se discute el valor de las fuentes especialmente sobre los autóctonos del México prehispánico que están a disposición de la ciencia. Se pregunta por las oportunidades y dificultades de recolectar documentos durante el tiempo colonial, y dentro de esto el caracter extraordinario y la eminente importancia de la colección de Boturini. Además se valora las obras de Boturini para la historia de la antropología americana.
La interpretación de petroglifos así como de otros testimonios del arte rupestre hechos por grupos prehistóricos es, sin duda, difícil en todas las regiones del mundo; pues retrospectivamente casi nunca se pueden descubrir las condiciones bajo las cuales fueron creados, a los hombres que los habían hecho, y sus ideas y deseos así como los rituales en los cuales estas antiguas obras de arte jugaron un papel. Ya el famoso viajero alemán Alejandro de Humboldt profesó admiración a este arte rupestre el cual encontró por la vez primera en Venezuela. Trató de explicarlo como testimonio de una civilización pasada y de revelar su contexto cultural. Es interesante que las respectivas zonas arqueológicas hasta hoy día pueden tener un papel ritual como se reconoce en base a la utilización actual.
