Literarische Grammatik

Dieser Band versammelt neun Beiträge mit dem Ziel, Sprach- und Literaturwissenschaft aufeinander zu beziehen: Literatur grammatisch zu betrachten und Grammatik für Literatur (neu) zu denken. Jeder Beitrag nimmt mindestens einen grammatischen und einen literarischen Gegenstand zum Ausgangspunkt. Dabei ist die Bandbreite groß; sie reicht von Bodo Kirchhoffs Roman ‚Dämmer und Aufruhr‘ über die Kurzgeschichte ‚Das Brot‘ von Wolfgang Borchert bis hin zu Marion Poschmanns Gedichtzyklus ‚Kindergarten Lichtenberg‘ und deckt unterschiedlichste sprachliche Bereiche wie Tempus, semantische Rollen, Interpunktionszeichen oder Metaphern ab.
Ist es in der Schule geradezu erwünscht, Grammatik und Literatur integrativ zu unterrichten, verfolgen sie als universitäre Disziplinen oft ganz unterschiedliche Fragestellungen an verschiedenen Sprachwerken. Vor diesem Hintergrund ist dieser Band ein interdisziplinärer Versuch, Anregungen und neue Perspektiven für schulische wie universitäre Bildungskontexte zu geben.
Throughout the last ~3 million years, the Earth's climate system was characterised by cycles of glacial and interglacial periods. The current warm period, the Holocene, is comparably stable and stands out from this long-term cyclicality. However, since the industrial revolution, the climate has been increasingly affected by a human-induced increase in greenhouse gas concentrations. While instrumental observations are used to describe changes over the past ~200 years, indirect observations via proxy data are the main source of information beyond this instrumental era. These data are indicators of past climatic conditions, stored in palaeoclimate archives around the Earth. The proxy signal is affected by processes independent of the prevailing climatic conditions. In particular, for sedimentary archives such as marine sediments and polar ice sheets, material may be redistributed during or after the initial deposition and subsequent formation of the archive. This leads to noise in the records challenging reliable reconstructions on local or short time scales. This dissertation characterises the initial deposition of the climatic signal and quantifies the resulting archive-internal heterogeneity and its influence on the observed proxy signal to improve the representativity and interpretation of climate reconstructions from marine sediments and ice cores.
To this end, the horizontal and vertical variation in radiocarbon content of a box-core from the South China Sea is investigated. The three-dimensional resolution is used to quantify the true uncertainty in radiocarbon age estimates from planktonic foraminifera with an extensive sampling scheme, including different sample volumes and replicated measurements of batches of small and large numbers of specimen. An assessment on the variability stemming from sediment mixing by benthic organisms reveals strong internal heterogeneity. Hence, sediment mixing leads to substantial time uncertainty of proxy-based reconstructions with error terms two to five times larger than previously assumed.
A second three-dimensional analysis of the upper snowpack provides insights into the heterogeneous signal deposition and imprint in snow and firn. A new study design which combines a structure-from-motion photogrammetry approach with two-dimensional isotopic data is performed at a study site in the accumulation zone of the Greenland Ice Sheet. The photogrammetry method reveals an intermittent character of snowfall, a layer-wise snow deposition with substantial contributions by wind-driven erosion and redistribution to the final spatially variable accumulation and illustrated the evolution of stratigraphic noise at the surface. The isotopic data show the preservation of stratigraphic noise within the upper firn column, leading to a spatially variable climate signal imprint and heterogeneous layer thicknesses. Additional post-depositional modifications due to snow-air exchange are also investigated, but without a conclusive quantification of the contribution to the final isotopic signature.
Finally, this characterisation and quantification of the complex signal formation in marine sediments and polar ice contributes to a better understanding of the signal content in proxy data which is needed to assess the natural climate variability during the Holocene.

Uns lernend zu verändern, ist eine der wichtigsten Eigenschaften, die wir Menschen haben. Wir werden geboren und können – scheinbar – nichts, müssen uns alles erst erschließen, abschauen, aneignen: greifen und laufen, essen und sprechen. Natürlich auch lesen und rechnen. Inzwischen wissen wir: Damit werden wir nie fertig. Im besten Fall lernen wir ein Leben lang. Hören wir damit auf, schadet es uns. „Es ist keine Schande, nichts zu wissen, wohl aber, nichts lernen zu wollen“, meinte vor über 2.400 Jahren schon der griechische Philosoph Platon.
Auch als Menschheit sind wir lernfähig, gelangten dank immer mehr Wissen über die Welt um uns herum aus der Steinzeit ins digitale Zeitalter. Dass auch dieser Fortschritt keine Ziellinie ist, sondern wir nach wie vor einen weiten Weg vor uns haben, zeigen der menschengemachte Klimawandel – und vor allem die Unfähigkeit, als globale Gemeinschaft das, was uns die Forschung lehrt, in entsprechendes Handeln zu übersetzen. Bleibt zu hoffen, dass wir das auch noch begreifen.
Was wir in der intensiven Diskussion über die vielschichtigen Ebenen des Lernens gern übersehen: Wir sind keineswegs die einzig Lernenden. Viele, wenn nicht alle Lebewesen auf der Erde lernen, manche zielstrebiger und komplexer, kognitiver, als andere. Und seit einiger Zeit sind auch Maschinen in der Lage, mehr oder weniger selbstständig zu lernen. Künstliche Intelligenz lässt grüßen.
Lernen kann in seiner Bedeutung für den Menschen kaum überschätzt werden. Das hat auch die Wissenschaft begriffen und die Lernprozesse und -bedingungen in nahezu allen Zusammenhängen für sich entdeckt, egal, ob es um unsere eigenen geht oder solche um uns herum. Einigen davon sind wir für die aktuelle Ausgabe der „Portal Wissen“ nachgegangen.
So erforscht die Neurowissenschaftlerin Milena Rabovsky, wie unser Hirn gesprochene Sprache vorhersagt – und dabei aus seinen Fehlern lernt –, während die Psycholinguistin Natalie Boll-Avetisyan eine Box entwickelt hat, mit der sich schon bei kleinen Kindern Störungen beim Sprachenlernen entdecken lassen. Die Verhaltensbiologinnen Jana Eccard und Valeria Mazza haben das Verhalten von kleinen Nagetieren untersucht und dabei nicht nur festgestellt, dass sie sehr unterschiedliche Persönlichkeiten ausbilden, sondern auch beschrieben, wie sie lernen, diese an wechselnde Umweltbedingungen anzupassen. Die Bildungsforscherin Katharina Scheiter erklärt, wie die Möglichkeiten der Digitalisierung unser Lernen verändern – und wie nicht. Der Politikwissenschaftler Fabian Schuppert und die Verwaltungsexpertin Sabine Kuhlmann wiederum analysieren die Klimapolitiken von Millionenstädten überall auf der Welt – und dabei vor allem die Art und Weise, wie die Bevölkerung einbezogen wird –, damit die Metropolregion Berlin von diesen Strategien profitieren kann. Und der Computerlinguist David Schlangen geht der Frage nach, was Maschinen lernen müssen, damit unsere Kommunikation mit ihnen noch besser funktioniert.
Da Forschung letztlich immer ein Lernprozess ist, der danach strebt, etwas zu verstehen, was bislang noch unbekannt ist, stehen dieses Mal ohnehin alle Texte irgendwie unter dem „Stern“ des Titelthemas: Es geht darum, wie wir Millionen Jahre alte Korallen als Klimaarchive lesen können, was die Geschichte der vergangenen Jahrhunderte uns über „Militärische Gewaltkulturen“ verrät und die Frage, welche Lehren wir aus Naturgefahren für die Zukunft ziehen sollten.
Wir haben mit einer Juristin gesprochen, die über den Tellerrand der Universität blickt und Recht für jedermann verständlich machen will, und mit einem Philosophen, der untersucht, warum „eine Meinung haben“ heute etwas anderes bedeutet als vor 100 Jahren. Wir berichten von „smarter DNA“ und der KIgestützten Genomanalyse, die beide die Gesundheitsversorgung nachhaltig verändern können. Außerdem geht es um das Berufsbild „YouTuber*in“, ein Start-up, das eine App entwickelt hat, dank der Paare spielerisch ihre Liebe vertiefen können, und die Frage, wie sich unser mentales Lexikon erforschen lässt. Portal Wissen = Learning

Changing through learning is one of the most important characteristics we humans have. We are born and can – it seems – do nothing. We have to comprehend, copy, and acquire everything: grasping and walking, eating and speaking. Of course, we also have to read and do number work. In the meantime, we know: We will never be able to finish this. At best, we learn for a lifetime. If we stop, it harms us. The Greek philosopher Plato said more than 2,400 years ago, “There is no shame in not knowing something. The shame is in not being willing to learn.”
As humans we are also capable of learning; thanks to more and more knowledge about the world around us, we have moved from the Stone Age into the digital age. That this development is not a finish line either, but that we still have a long way to go, is shown by man-made climate change – and above all by our inability as a global community to translate what research teaches us into appropriate actions. Let us dare to hope that we also comprehend this.
What we tend to ignore in the intensive discussion about the multi-layered levels of learning: We are by no means the only learners. Many, if not all, living beings on our planet learn, some more in a more purposeful and complex and more cognitive way than others. And for some time now, machines have also been able to learn more or less independently. Artificial intelligence sends its regards.
The significance of learning for human beings can hardly be overestimated. Science has also understood this and has discovered the learning processes and conditions in almost all contexts for itself, no matter whether it is about our own learning processes and conditions or those around us. We have investigated some of these for the current issue of “Portal Wissen”.
Psycholinguist Natalie Boll-Avetisyan has developed a box that can be used to detect language learning disorders already in young children. The behavioral biologists Jana Eccard and Valeria Mazza investigated the behavior of small rodents and found out that they do not only develop different personality traits but they also described how they learn to adapt them different environmental conditions. Computer linguist David Schlangen examines the question what machines have to learn so that our communication with them works even better.
Since research is ultimately always a learning process that strives to understand something yet unknown, this time all texts are somehow along the motto of the title theme: It is about what the history of past centuries reveals about “military cultures of violence” and the question of what lessons we should learn from natural hazards for the future.
We talked with a legal scholar who looks beyond the university’s backyard and wants to make law comprehensible to everyone. We also talked with a philosopher who analyzes why “having an opinion” means something different today than 100 years ago. We report about an AI-based genome analysis that can change healthcare sustainably. Furthermore, it is about the job profile “YouTuber”, minor cosmopolitanisms, and wildlife management in Africa. Diese Masterarbeit zielt darauf ab, exemplarisch an zoologischen Gärten für das politische Spannungsverhältnis zwischen Mensch und Tier zu sensibilisieren sowie die damit einhergehenden Aushandlungsprozesse auf individueller bzw. gesamtgesellschaftlicher Ebene didaktisch anschlussfähig zu machen. Nach einer kurzen begrifflichen Einführung der titelgebenden Termini werden in diesem Sinne vier verschiedene Ausdrucksformen ambivalenter Mensch-Tier-Beziehungen erörtert: die Entwicklungsgeschichte und Architektur sowie die Artenschutz- bzw. Bildungsleistungen der Zoos. Dabei wird der historisch vorbelastete Balanceakt zoologischer Gärten deutlich, in Gegenwart und Zukunft menschliche und tierliche Interessen glaubhaft in Einklang bringen zu müssen. Als Grundübel dieses Dilemmas wird wiederum der menschliche Anspruch identifiziert, Naturzustände vor dem Hintergrund eines fragwürdigen Legitimationsnarratives kulturell nachstellen zu wollen.
Außerdem entfaltet der Autor die These, dass der Zoo gerade durch die ihn prägenden Ambivalenzen gegenüber anderen Problembereichen der Mensch-Tier-Beziehungen an Kontroversität gewinnt und somit prädestiniert ist, um als politikdidaktische Reibungsfläche zeitgemäßer Mensch-Tier-Beziehungen zu fungieren. Dementsprechend werden abschließend Zugänge vorgeschlagen, um den Zoo als außerschulischen politischen Lernort vor dem Hintergrund vielfältiger Streitfragen erkunden und produktiv erörtern zu können.
Indem Schülerinnen und Schüler demnach die Wert- und Zweckrationalität der Zoos auf den Prüfstand stellen, werden sie dazu angeregt, sich selbst- und gesellschaftskritisch mit dem politischen Verhältnis zwischen Tieren und Menschen auseinanderzusetzen. Die dabei exemplarisch am Zoo gewonnenen Erkenntnisse und Überzeugungen lassen sich in Bezug auf die ebenso drängende wie polarisierende Tierfrage abstrahieren. Durch den somit geschaffenen Orientierungsrahmen werden die Lernenden nicht zuletzt in die Lage versetzt, ihre gereiften Vorstellungen von einem angemessenen Umgang mit (nichtmenschlichen) Tieren öffentlich zu vertreten.
Im Rahmen der Förderung sozialer Teilhabe von Schüler:innen im Unterricht benötigen Lehrkräfte Reflexionskompetenzen, die es ihnen ermöglichen, mit den damit verbundenen Antinomien umzugehen. Davon ausgehend wird in diesem Beitrag ein Lehr-/Lernkonzept vorgestellt, welches auf die Förderung von Lehramtsstudierenden im Sinne einer reflexiven Inklusion abzielt. Der Fokus liegt auf dem Einsatz der Methode des Lauten Denkens, welches die Denk- und Problemlösungsprozesse der Studierenden beim Schauen von Unterrichtsvideos introspektiv erfasst. Das laut Gedachte wird anschließend für Metareflexionen genutzt. Inwiefern damit (fehlende) erfahrungsbasierte und wissenschaftliche Formen pädagogischen Wissens thematisiert und prozessbegleitend begegnet werden können, um eine Entwicklung von kritisch-reflexiven Kompetenzen zu fördern, wurde in einer Pilotphase im Rahmen eines Seminars erprobt. Ergänzend wurde die Anwendung des Lauten Denkens bei einzelnen Studierenden videographiert. Dazu werden erste Ergebnisse vorgestellt und ein Ausblick auf die weitere Nutzung und Erforschung der Methode für die Förderung von Reflexionsprozessen bei Lehramtsstudierenden im Seminarkontext gegeben.
Evaluation of nitrogen dynamics in high-order streams and rivers based on high-frequency monitoring

Nutrient storage, transform and transport are important processes for achieving environmental and ecological health, as well as conducting water management plans. Nitrogen is one of the most noticeable elements due to its impacts on tremendous consequences of eutrophication in aquatic systems. Among all nitrogen components, researches on nitrate are blooming because of widespread deployments of in-situ high-frequency sensors. Monitoring and studying nitrate can become a paradigm for any other reactive substances that may damage environmental conditions and cause economic losses.
Identifying nitrate storage and its transport within a catchment are inspiring to the management of agricultural activities and municipal planning. Storm events are periods when hydrological dynamics activate the exchange between nitrate storage and flow pathways. In this dissertation, long-term high-frequency monitoring data at three gauging stations in the Selke river were used to quantify event-scale nitrate concentration-discharge (C-Q) hysteretic relationships. The Selke catchment is characterized into three nested subcatchments by heterogeneous physiographic conditions and land use. With quantified hysteresis indices, impacts of seasonality and landscape gradients on C-Q relationships are explored. For example, arable area has deep nitrate legacy and can be activated with high intensity precipitation during wetting/wet periods (i.e., the strong hydrological connectivity). Hence, specific shapes of C-Q relationships in river networks can identify targeted locations and periods for agricultural management actions within the catchment to decrease nitrate output into downstream aquatic systems like the ocean.
The capacity of streams for removing nitrate is of both scientific and social interest, which makes the quantification motivated. Although measurements of nitrate dynamics are advanced compared to other substances, the methodology to directly quantify nitrate uptake pathways is still limited spatiotemporally. The major problem is the complex convolution of hydrological and biogeochemical processes, which limits in-situ measurements (e.g., isotope addition) usually to small streams with steady flow conditions. This makes the extrapolation of nitrate dynamics to large streams highly uncertain. Hence, understanding of in-stream nitrate dynamic in large rivers is still necessary. High-frequency monitoring of nitrate mass balance between upstream and downstream measurement sites can quantitatively disentangle multi-path nitrate uptake dynamics at the reach scale (3-8 km). In this dissertation, we conducted this approach in large stream reaches with varying hydro-morphological and environmental conditions for several periods, confirming its success in disentangling nitrate uptake pathways and their temporal dynamics. Net nitrate uptake, autotrophic assimilation and heterotrophic uptake were disentangled, as well as their various diel and seasonal patterns. Natural streams generally can remove more nitrate under similar environmental conditions and heterotrophic uptake becomes dominant during post-wet seasons. Such two-station monitoring provided novel insights into reach-scale nitrate uptake processes in large streams.
Long-term in-stream nitrate dynamics can also be evaluated with the application of water quality model. This is among the first time to use a data-model fusion approach to upscale the two-station methodology in large-streams with complex flow dynamics under long-term high-frequency monitoring, assessing the in-stream nitrate retention and its responses to drought disturbances from seasonal to sub-daily scale. Nitrate retention (both net uptake and net release) exhibited substantial seasonality, which also differed in the investigated normal and drought years. In the normal years, winter and early spring seasons exhibited extensive net releases, then general net uptake occurred after the annual high-flow season at later spring and early summer with autotrophic processes dominating and during later summer-autumn low-flow periods with heterotrophy-characteristics predominating. Net nitrate release occurred since late autumn until the next early spring. In the drought years, the late-autumn net releases were not so consistently persisted as in the normal years and the predominance of autotrophic processes occurred across seasons. Aforementioned comprehensive results of nitrate dynamics on stream scale facilitate the understanding of instream processes, as well as raise the importance of scientific monitoring schemes for hydrology and water quality parameters.
Bei Kindern mit Sprachentwicklungsstörungen (SES) können sich Symptome auf sprachlich-funktionaler Ebene sehr variabel auf die kommunikative Partizipation im Alltag auswirken. Kommunikative Partizipation wird definiert als sprachlich-kommunikatives Teilnehmen an Lebenssituationen, in denen Wissen, Informationen, Ideen oder Gefühle ausgetauscht werden. Der deutschsprachige ‚Fokus auf den Erfolg der Kommunikation für Kinder unter sechs Jahren‘ (FOCUS©-34-G) ist ein evaluierter Fragebogen zur Fremdeinschätzung der kommunikativen Partizipation von Kindern (1;6 bis 5;11 Jahre). Ziel unserer Studie war die Untersuchung der Auswirkungen einer SES auf die kommunikative Partizipation betroffener Kinder im Alter zwischen 2;0 und 4;11 Jahren anhand des FOCUS©-34-G. Eltern von Kindern mit SES füllten den FOCUS©-34-G sowie einen Demografie-Bogen aus. Es konnten erste Daten von 22 Kindern (16 Jungen) im Alter zwischen 2;7 und 3;11 (M = 3;3 Jahre, SD = 0;4 Jahre) erhoben werden. Im FOCUS©-34-G erreichten Kinder mit SES einen Gesamtwert zwischen 54 und 197 (M = 120.55, SD = 40.91) von 238 maximal möglichen Punkten. Diese Ergebnisse zeigen eine eingeschränkte kommunikative Partizipation von Kindern mit SES, die es in einer ICF-CY-orientierten sprachtherapeutischen Intervention zu beachten gilt. Als klinisches Assessmentinstrument kann der FOCUS©-34-G als Kurzversion des FOCUS©-G als geeignet angesehen werden.
Records from ocean bottom seismometers (OBSs) are highly contaminated by noise, which is much stronger
compared to data from most land stations, especially on the horizontal components. As a consequence, the high energy of the oceanic noise at frequencies below 1 Hz considerably complicates the analysis of the teleseismic earthquake signals recorded by OBSs.
Previous studies suggested different approaches to remove low-frequency noises from OBS recordings but mainly focused on the vertical component. The records of horizontal components, which are crucial for the application of many methods in passive seismological analysis of body and surface waves, could not be much improved in the teleseismic frequency band. Here we introduce a noise reduction method, which is derived from the harmonic–percussive separation algorithms used in Zali et al. (2021), in order to separate long-lasting narrowband signals from broadband transients in the OBS signal. This leads to significant noise reduction of OBS records on both the vertical and horizontal components and increases the earthquake signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) without distortion of the broadband earthquake waveforms. This is demonstrated through tests with synthetic data. Both SNR and cross-correlation coefficients showed significant improvements for different realistic noise realizations. The application of denoised signals in surface wave analysis and receiver functions is discussed through tests with synthetic and real data.
Volcanoes are one of the Earth’s most dynamic zones and responsible for many changes in our planet. Volcano seismology aims to provide an understanding of the physical processes in volcanic systems and anticipate the style and timing of eruptions by analyzing the seismic records. Volcanic tremor signals are usually observed in the seismic records before or during volcanic eruptions. Their analysis contributes to evaluate the evolving volcanic activity and potentially predict eruptions. Years of continuous seismic monitoring now provide useful information for operational eruption forecasting. The continuously growing amount of seismic recordings, however, poses a challenge for analysis, information extraction, and interpretation, to support timely decision making during volcanic crises. Furthermore, the complexity of eruption processes and precursory activities makes the analysis challenging.
A challenge in studying seismic signals of volcanic origin is the coexistence of transient signal swarms and long-lasting volcanic tremor signals. Separating transient events from volcanic tremors can, therefore, contribute to improving our understanding of the underlying physical processes. Some similar issues (data reduction, source separation, extraction, and classification) are addressed in the context of music information retrieval (MIR). The signal characteristics of acoustic and seismic recordings comprise a number of similarities. This thesis is going beyond classical signal analysis techniques usually employed in seismology by exploiting similarities of seismic and acoustic signals and building the information retrieval strategy on the expertise developed in the field of MIR.
First, inspired by the idea of harmonic–percussive separation (HPS) in musical signal processing, I have developed a method to extract harmonic volcanic tremor signals and to detect transient events from seismic recordings. This provides a clean tremor signal suitable for tremor investigation along with a characteristic function suitable for earthquake detection. Second, using HPS algorithms, I have developed a noise reduction technique for seismic signals. This method is especially useful for denoising ocean bottom seismometers, which are highly contaminated by noise. The advantage of this method compared to other denoising techniques is that it doesn’t introduce distortion to the broadband earthquake waveforms, which makes it reliable for different applications in passive seismological analysis. Third, to address the challenge of extracting information from high-dimensional data and investigating the complex eruptive phases, I have developed an advanced machine learning model that results in a comprehensive signal processing scheme for volcanic tremors. Using this method seismic signatures of major eruptive phases can be automatically detected. This helps to provide a chronology of the volcanic system. Also, this model is capable to detect weak precursory volcanic tremors prior to the eruption, which could be used as an indicator of imminent eruptive activity. The extracted patterns of seismicity and their temporal variations finally provide an explanation for the transition mechanism between eruptive phases.
In this work, the role of the TusA protein was investigated for the cell functionality and FtsZ ring assembly in Escherichia coli. TusA is the tRNA-2-thiouridine synthase that acts as a sulfur transferase in tRNA thiolation for the formation of 2-thiouridine at the position 34 (wobble base) of tRNALys, tRNAGlu and tRNAGln. It binds the persulfide form of sulfur and transfers it to further proteins during mnm5s2U tRNA modification at wobble position and for Moco biosynthesis. With this thiomodification of tRNA, the ribosome binding is more efficient and frameshifting is averted during the protein translation. Previous studies have revealed an essential role of TusA in bacterial cell physiology since deletion of the tusA gene resulted in retarded growth and filamentous cells during the exponential growth phase in a rich medium which suddenly disappeared during the stationary phase. This indicates a problem in the cell division process. Therefore the focus of this work was to investigate the role of TusA for cell functionality and FtsZ ring formation and thus the cell separation.
The reason behind the filamentous growth of the tusA mutant strain was investigated by growth and morphological analyses. ΔtusA cells showed a retarded growth during the exponential phase compared to the WT strain. Also, morphological analysis of ΔtusA cells confirmed the filamentous cell shape. The growth and cell division defects in ΔtusA indicated a defect in FtsZ protein as a key player of cell division. The microscopic investigation revealed that filamentous ΔtusA cells possessed multiple DNA parts arranged next to each other. This suggested that although the DNA replication occurred correctly, there was a defect in the step where FtsZ should act; probably FtsZ is unable to assemble to the ring structure or the assembled ring is not able to constrict. All tested mutant strains (ΔtusD, ΔtusE and ΔmnmA) involved in the mnm5s2U34 tRNA modification pathway shared the similar retarded growth and filamentous cell shape like ΔtusA strain. Thus, the cell division defect arises from a defect in mnm5s2U34 tRNA thiolation.
Since the FtsZ ring formation was supposed to be defective in filaments, a possible intracellular interaction of TusA and FtsZ was examined by fluorescent (EGFP and mCherry) fusion proteins expression and FRET. FtsZ expressing tusA mutant (DE3) cells showed a red mCherry signal at the cell poles, indicating that FtsZ is still in the assembling phase. Interestingly, the cellular region of EGFP-TusA fusion protein expressed in ΔtusA (DE3) was conspicuous; the EGFP signal was spread throughout the whole cell and, in addition, a slight accumulation of the EGFP-TusA fluorescence was detectable at the cell poles, the same part of the cell as for mCherry-FtsZ. Thus, this strongly suggested an interaction of TusA and FtsZ.
Furthermore, the cellular FtsZ and Fis concentrations, and their change during different growth phases were determined via immunoblotting. All tested deletion strains of mnm5s2U34 tRNA modification show high cellular FtsZ and Fis levels in the exponential phase, shifting to the later growth phases. This shift reflects the retarded growth, whereby the deletion strains reach later the exponential phase. Conclusively, the growth and cell division defect, and thus the formation of filaments, is most likely caused by changes in the cellular FtsZ and Fis concentrations.
Finally, the translation efficiencies of certain proteins (RpoS, Fur, Fis and mFis) in tusA mutant and in additional gene deletion strains were studied whether they were affected by using unmodified U34 tRNAs of Lys, Glu and Gln. The translation efficiency is decreased in mnm5s2U34 tRNA modification-impaired strains in addition to their existing growth and cell division defect due to the elimination of these three amino acids. Finally, these results confirm and reinforce the importance of Lys, Glu and Gln and the mnm5s2U34 tRNA thiolation for efficient protein translation. Thus, these findings verify that the translation of fur, fis and rpoS is regulated by mnm5s2U34 tRNA modifications, which is growth phase-dependent.
In total, this work showed the importance of the role of TusA for bacterial cell functionality and physiology. The deletion of the tusA gene disrupted a complex regulatory network within the cell, that most influenced by the decreased translation of Fis and RpoS, caused by the absence of mnm5s2U34 tRNA modifications. The disruption of RpoS and Fis cellular network influences in turn the cellular FtsZ level in the early exponential phase. Finally, the reduced FtsZ concentration leads to elongated, filamentous E. coli cells, which are unable to divide.
Successful sentence comprehension requires the comprehender to correctly figure out who did what to whom. For example, in the sentence John kicked the ball, the comprehender has to figure out who did the action of kicking and what was being kicked. This process of identifying and connecting the syntactically-related words in a sentence is called dependency completion. What are the cognitive constraints that determine dependency completion? A widely-accepted theory is cue-based retrieval. The theory maintains that dependency completion is driven by a content-addressable search for the co-dependents in memory. The cue-based retrieval explains a wide range of empirical data from several constructions including subject-verb agreement, subject-verb non-agreement, plausibility mismatch configurations, and negative polarity items.
However, there are two major empirical challenges to the theory: (i) Grammatical sentences’ data from subject-verb number agreement dependencies, where the theory predicts a slowdown at the verb in sentences like the key to the cabinet was rusty compared to the key to the cabinets was rusty, but the data are inconsistent with this prediction; and, (ii) Data from antecedent-reflexive dependencies, where a facilitation in reading times is predicted at the reflexive in the bodybuilder who worked with the trainers injured themselves vs. the bodybuilder who worked with the trainer injured themselves, but the data do not show a facilitatory effect.
The work presented in this dissertation is dedicated to building a more general theory of dependency completion that can account for the above two datasets without losing the original empirical coverage of the cue-based retrieval assumption. In two journal articles, I present computational modeling work that addresses the above two empirical challenges.
To explain the grammatical sentences’ data from subject-verb number agreement dependencies, I propose a new model that assumes that the cue-based retrieval operates on a probabilistically distorted representation of nouns in memory (Article I). This hybrid distortion-plus-retrieval model was compared against the existing candidate models using data from 17 studies on subject-verb number agreement in 4 languages. I find that the hybrid model outperforms the existing models of number agreement processing suggesting that the cue-based retrieval theory must incorporate a feature distortion assumption.
To account for the absence of facilitatory effect in antecedent-reflexive dependencies, I propose an individual difference model, which was built within the cue-based retrieval framework (Article II). The model assumes that individuals may differ in how strongly they weigh a syntactic cue over a number cue. The model was fitted to data from two studies on antecedent-reflexive dependencies, and the participant-level cue-weighting was estimated. We find that one-fourth of the participants, in both studies, weigh the syntactic cue higher than the number cue in processing reflexive dependencies and the remaining participants weigh the two cues equally. The result indicates that the absence of predicted facilitatory effect at the level of grouped data is driven by some, not all, participants who weigh syntactic cues higher than the number cue. More generally, the result demonstrates that the assumption of differential cue weighting is important for a theory of dependency completion processes. This differential cue weighting idea was independently supported by a modeling study on subject-verb non-agreement dependencies (Article III).
Overall, the cue-based retrieval, which is a general theory of dependency completion, needs to incorporate two new assumptions: (i) the nouns stored in memory can undergo probabilistic feature distortion, and (ii) the linguistic cues used for retrieval can be weighted differentially. This is the cumulative result of the modeling work presented in this dissertation.
The dissertation makes an important theoretical contribution: Sentence comprehension in humans is driven by a mechanism that assumes cue-based retrieval, probabilistic feature distortion, and differential cue weighting. This insight is theoretically important because there is some independent support for these three assumptions in sentence processing and the broader memory literature. The modeling work presented here is also methodologically important because for the first time, it demonstrates (i) how the complex models of sentence processing can be evaluated using data from multiple studies simultaneously, without oversimplifying the models, and (ii) how the inferences drawn from the individual-level behavior can be used in theory development.
This paper investigates private university students’ language learning activities in MOOC platforms and their attitude toward it. The study explores the development of MOOC use in Chinese private universities, with a focus on two modes: online et blended. We conducted empirical studies with students learning French and Japanese as a second foreign language, using questionnaires (N = 387) and interviews (N = 20) at a private university in Wuhan. Our results revealed that the majority of students used the MOOC platform more than twice a week and focused on the MOOC video, materials and assignments. However, we also found that students showed less interest in online communication (forums). Those who worked in the blended learning mode, especially Japanese learning students, had a more positive attitude toward MOOCs than other students.
The present thesis focuses on the synthesis of nanostructured iron-based compounds by using β-FeOOH nanospindles and poly(ionic liquid)s (PILs) vesicles as hard and soft templates, respectively, to suppress the shuttle effect of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) in Li-S batteries. Three types of composites with different nanostructures (mesoporous nanospindle, yolk-shell nanospindle, and nanocapsule) have been synthesized and applied as sulfur host material for Li-S batteries. Their interactions with LiPSs and effects on the electrochemical performance of Li-S batteries have been systematically studied.
In the first part of the thesis, carbon-coated mesoporous Fe3O4 (C@M-Fe3O4) nanospindles have been synthesized to suppress the shuttle effect of LiPSs. First, β-FeOOH nanospindles have been synthesized via the hydrolysis of iron (III) chloride in aqueous solution and after silica coating and subsequent calcination, mesoporous Fe2O3 (M-Fe2O3) have been obtained inside the confined silica layer through pyrolysis of β-FeOOH. After the removal of the silica layer, electron tomography (ET) has been applied to rebuild the 3D structure of the M-Fe2O3 nanospindles. After coating a thin layer of polydopamine (PDA) as carbon source, the PDA-coated M-Fe2O3 particles have been calcinated to synthesize C@M-Fe3O4 nanospindles. With the chemisorption of Fe3O4 and confinement of mesoporous structure to anchor LiPSs, the composite C@M-Fe3O4/S electrode delivers a remaining capacity of 507.7 mAh g-1 at 1 C after 600 cycles.
In the second part of the thesis, a series of iron-based compounds (Fe3O4, FeS2, and FeS) with the same yolk-shell nanospindle morphology have been synthesized, which allows for the direct comparison of the effects of compositions on the electrochemical performance of Li-S batteries. The Fe3O4-carbon yolk-shell nanospindles have been synthesized by using the β-FeOOH nanospindles as hard template. Afterwards, Fe3O4-carbon yolk-shell nanospindles have been used as precursors to obtain iron sulfides (FeS and FeS2)-carbon yolk-shell nanospindles through sulfidation at different temperatures. Using the three types of yolk-shell nanospindles as sulfur host, the effects of compositions on interactions with LiPSs and electrochemical performance in Li-S batteries have been systematically investigated and compared. Benefiting from the chemisorption and catalytic effect of FeS2 particles and the physical confinement of the carbon shell, the FeS2-C/S electrode exhibits the best electrochemical performance with an initial specific discharge capacity of 877.6 mAh g-1 at 0.5 C and a retention ratio of 86.7% after 350 cycles.
In the third part, PILs vesicles have been used as soft template to synthesize carbon nanocapsules embedded with iron nitride particles to immobilize and catalyze LiPSs in Li-S batteries. First, 3-n-decyl-1-vinylimidazolium bromide has been used as monomer to synthesize PILs nanovesicles by free radical polymerization. Assisted by PDA coating route and ion exchange, PIL nanovesicles have been successfully applied as soft template in morphology-maintaining carbonization to prepare carbon nanocapsules embedded with iron nitride nanoparticles (FexN@C). The well-dispersed iron nitride nanoparticles effectively catalyze the conversion of LiPSs to Li2S, owing to their high electrical conductivity and strong chemical binding to LiPSs. The constructed FexN@C/S cathode demonstrates a high initial discharge capacity of 1085.0 mAh g-1 at 0.5 C with a remaining value of 930.0 mAh g-1 after 200 cycles.
The results in the present thesis demonstrate the facile synthetic routes of nanostructured iron-based compounds with controllable morphologies and compositions using soft and hard colloidal templates, which can be applied as sulfur host to suppress the shuttle behavior of LiPSs. The synthesis approaches developed in this thesis are also applicable to fabricating other transition metal-based compounds with porous nanostructures for other applications.
The massive growth of MOOCs in 2011 laid the groundwork for the achievement of SDG 4. With the various benefits of MOOCs, there is also anticipation that online education should focus on more interactivity and global collaboration. In this context, the Global MOOC and Online Education Alliance (GMA) established a diverse group of 17 world-leading universities and three online education platforms from across 14 countries on all six continents in 2020. Through nearly three years of exploration, GMA has gained experience and achieved progress in fostering global cooperation in higher education. First, in joint teaching, GMA has promoted in-depth cooperation between members inside and outside the alliance. Examples include promoting the exchange of high-quality MOOCs, encouraging the creation of Global Hybrid Classroom, and launching Global Hybrid Classroom Certificate Programs. Second, in capacity building and knowledge sharing, GMA has launched Online Education Dialogues and the Global MOOC and Online Education Conference, inviting global experts to share best practices and attracting more than 10 million viewers around the world. Moreover, GMA is collaborating with international organizations to support teachers’ professional growth, create an online learning community, and serve as a resource for further development. Third, in public advocacy, GMA has launched the SDG Hackathon and Global Massive Open Online Challenge (GMOOC) and attracted global learners to acquire knowledge and incubate their innovative ideas within a cross-cultural community to solve real-world problems that all humans face and jointly create a better future. Based on past experiences and challenges, GMA will explore more diverse cooperation models with more partners utilizing advanced technology, provide more support for digital transformation in higher education, and further promote global cooperation towards building a human community with a shared future.
Seit John Dewey und Donald Schön besteht weitgehender Konsens, dass Reflexivität eine wichtige Kompetenz von Lehrkräften darstellt und die Reflexion in den Unterrichtsalltag einer Lehrkraft integriert sein sollte. Es wird davon ausgegangen, dass Reflexion, wenn sie absichtsvoll und zielgerichtet eingesetzt wird, die berufliche Entwicklung einer Lehrkraft positiv beeinflussen kann. Überzeugungen, Einstellungen und Verhaltensweisen können durch die Reflexion bewusster wahrgenommen und verändert werden. Sie regt Lernprozesse an, stärkt Eigenverantwortung und Autonomie und steigert die Berufszufriedenheit. Allerdings birgt die Förderung von Reflexivität im Rahmen der Lehrkräftebildung einige Schwierigkeiten und trotz nunmehr über 40 Jahren theoretischer sowie empirischer Erörterung bleiben bis heute auch verschiedene Fragen unbeantwortet. Im Beitrag werden auf Grundlage der aktuellen Diskussion das Konzept der Reflexion sowie Möglichkeiten und Grenzen der Förderung von Reflexivität dargelegt und es wird aufgezeigt, welche besonderen Herausforderungen der Lehrberuf hierbei birgt. Abschließend wird erörtert, welche aktuellen Forschungslücken und -desiderate bestehen.
Für die Entwicklung professioneller Handlungskompetenzen angehender Lehrkräfte stellt die Unterrichtsreflexion ein wichtiges Instrument dar, um Theoriewissen und Praxiserfahrungen in Beziehung zu setzen. Die Auswertung von Unterrichtsreflexionen und eine entsprechende Rückmeldung stellt Forschende und Dozierende allerdings vor praktische wie theoretische Herausforderungen. Im Kontext der Forschung zu Künstlicher Intelligenz (KI) entwickelte Methoden bieten hier neue Potenziale. Der Beitrag stellt überblicksartig zwei Teilstudien vor, die mit Hilfe von KI-Methoden wie dem maschinellen Lernen untersuchen, inwieweit eine Auswertung von Unterrichtsreflexionen angehender Physiklehrkräfte auf Basis eines theoretisch abgeleiteten Reflexionsmodells und die automatisierte Rückmeldung hierzu möglich sind. Dabei wurden unterschiedliche Ansätze des maschinellen Lernens verwendet, um modellbasierte Klassifikation und Exploration von Themen in Unterrichtsreflexionen umzusetzen. Die Genauigkeit der Ergebnisse wurde vor allem durch sog. Große Sprachmodelle gesteigert, die auch den Transfer auf andere Standorte und Fächer ermöglichen. Für die fachdidaktische Forschung bedeuten sie jedoch wiederum neue Herausforderungen, wie etwa systematische Verzerrungen und Intransparenz von Entscheidungen. Dennoch empfehlen wir, die Potenziale der KI-basierten Methoden gründlicher zu erforschen und konsequent in der Praxis (etwa in Form von Webanwendungen) zu implementieren.
Poor dietary quality is a major cause of morbidity, making the promotion of healthy eating a societal priority. Older adults are a critical target group for promoting healthy eating to enable healthy aging. One factor suggested to promote healthy eating is the willingness to try unfamiliar foods, referred to as food neophilia. This two-wave longitudinal study explored the stability of food neophilia and dietary quality and their prospective relationship over three years, analyzing self-reported data from N = 960 older adults (MT1 = 63.4, range = 50–84) participating in the NutriAct Family Study (NFS) in a cross-lagged panel design. Dietary quality was rated using the NutriAct diet score, based on the current evidence for chronic disease prevention. Food neophilia was measured using the Variety Seeking Tendency Scale. The analyses revealed high a longitudinal stability of both constructs and a small positive cross-sectional correlation between them. Food neophilia had no prospective effect on dietary quality, whereas a very small positive prospective effect of dietary quality on food neophilia was found. Our findings give initial insights into the positive relation of food neophilia and a health-promoting diet in aging and underscore the need for more in-depth research, e.g., on the constructs’ developmental trajectories and potential critical windows of opportunity for promoting food neophilia.

Trotz der eindeutigen Vorteile einer ausgewogenen Ernährung halten sich viele Menschen weltweit nicht an entsprechende Ernährungsrichtlinien. Um angemessene Strategien zur Unterstützung einer gesundheitsfördernden Ernährung zu entwickeln, ist ein Verständnis der zugrunde liegenden Faktoren unerlässlich. Insbesondere die Gruppe der älteren Erwachsenen stellt dabei eine wichtige Zielgruppe für ernährungsbezogene Präventions- und Interventionsansätze dar. Einer der vielen Faktoren, die als Determinanten einer gesundheitsfördernden Ernährung diskutiert werden, ist die Food Neophilie, also die Bereitschaft, neue und unbekannte Lebensmittel auszuprobieren. Aktuelle Forschungsergebnisse legen nahe, dass die Food Neophilie positiv mit einer gesundheitsfördernden Ernährung in Verbindung steht, allerdings ist die bisherige Forschung in diesem Bereich äußerst begrenzt. Das Ziel der Dissertation war es, das Konstrukt der Food Neophilie sowie seine Beziehung zu gesundheitsförderndem Ernährungsverhalten im höheren Erwachsenenalter grundlegend zu erforschen, um das Potenzial der Food Neophilie für die Gesundheitsförderung älterer Erwachsener besser zu verstehen. Dabei wurde im Rahmen der ersten Publikation zunächst untersucht, wie sich das Konstrukt der Food Neophilie reliabel und valide erfassen lässt, um weiterführende Untersuchungen der Food Neophilie zu ermöglichen. Die psychometrische Validierung der deutschen Version der Variety Seeking Tendency Scale (VARSEEK) basierte auf zwei unabhängigen Stichproben mit insgesamt N = 1000 Teilnehmenden und bestätigte, dass es sich bei der Skala um ein reliables und valides Messinstrument zur Erfassung der Food Neophilie handelt. Darauf aufbauend wurde im Rahmen der zweiten Publikation die Beziehung der Food Neophilie und der Ernährungsqualität über die Zeit hinweg analysiert. Die prospektive Untersuchung von N = 960 Teilnehmenden des höheren Erwachsenenalters (M = 63.4 Jahre) anhand einer Cross-Lagged-Panel-Analyse ergab hohe zeitliche Stabilitäten der Food Neophilie und der Ernährungsqualität über einen Zeitraum von drei Jahren. Es zeigte sich zudem ein positiver querschnittlicher Zusammenhang zwischen der Food Neophilie und der Ernährungsqualität, jedoch wurde die Food Neophilie nicht als signifikante Determinante der Ernährungsqualität über die Zeit hinweg identifiziert. In der dritten Publikation wurden schließlich nicht nur die individuellen Auswirkungen der Food Neophilie auf die Ernährungsqualität betrachtet, sondern auch potenzielle dynamische Wechselwirkungen innerhalb von Partnerschaften einbezogen. Hierzu erfolgte mittels eines Actor-Partner-Interdependence-Modells eine Differenzierung potenzieller intra- und interpersoneller Einflüsse der Food Neophilie auf die Ernährungsqualität. Im Rahmen der dyadischen Analyse zeigte sich bei N = 390 heterosexuellen Paaren im höheren Erwachsenenalter (M = 64.0 Jahre) ein Dominanzmuster: Während die Food Neophilie der Frauen positiv mit ihrer eigenen Ernährungsqualität und der ihrer Partner zusammenhing, war die Food Neophilie der Männer nicht mit der Ernährungsqualität des Paares assoziiert. Insgesamt leistet die vorliegende Dissertation einen wertvollen Beitrag zum umfassenden Verständnis der Food Neophilie sowie ihrer Rolle im Kontext der Ernährungsgesundheit älterer Erwachsener. Trotz fehlender Vorhersagekraft über die Zeit hinweg deutet der positive Zusammenhang zwischen Food Neophilie und Ernährungsqualität darauf hin, dass die Fokussierung auf eine positive und neugierige Einstellung gegenüber Lebensmitteln eine innovative Perspektive für Präventions- und Interventionsansätze zur Unterstützung einer gesundheitsfördernden Ernährung älterer Erwachsener bieten könnte.
Housing in metabolic cages can induce a pronounced stress response. Metabolic cage systems imply housing mice on metal wire mesh for the collection of urine and feces in addition to monitoring food and water intake. Moreover, mice are single-housed, and no nesting, bedding, or enrichment material is provided, which is often argued to have a not negligible impact on animal welfare due to cold stress. We therefore attempted to reduce stress during metabolic cage housing for mice by comparing an innovative metabolic cage (IMC) with a commercially available metabolic cage from Tecniplast GmbH (TMC) and a control cage. Substantial refinement measures were incorporated into the IMC cage design. In the frame of a multifactorial approach for severity assessment, parameters such as body weight, body composition, food intake, cage and body surface temperature (thermal imaging), mRNA expression of uncoupling protein 1 (Ucp1) in brown adipose tissue (BAT), fur score, and fecal corticosterone metabolites (CMs) were included. Female and male C57BL/6J mice were single-housed for 24 h in either conventional Macrolon cages (control), IMC, or TMC for two sessions. Body weight decreased less in the IMC (females—1st restraint: 6.94%; 2nd restraint: 6.89%; males—1st restraint: 8.08%; 2nd restraint: 5.82%) compared to the TMC (females—1st restraint: 13.2%; 2nd restraint: 15.0%; males—1st restraint: 13.1%; 2nd restraint: 14.9%) and the IMC possessed a higher cage temperature (females—1st restraint: 23.7°C; 2nd restraint: 23.5 °C; males—1st restraint: 23.3 °C; 2nd restraint: 23.5 °C) compared with the TMC (females—1st restraint: 22.4 °C; 2nd restraint: 22.5 °C; males—1st restraint: 22.6 °C; 2nd restraint: 22.4 °C). The concentration of fecal corticosterone metabolites in the TMC (females—1st restraint: 1376 ng/g dry weight (DW); 2nd restraint: 2098 ng/g DW; males—1st restraint: 1030 ng/g DW; 2nd restraint: 1163 ng/g DW) was higher compared to control cage housing (females—1st restraint:
640 ng/g DW; 2nd restraint: 941 ng/g DW; males—1st restraint: 504 ng/g DW; 2nd restraint: 537 ng/g DW). Our results show the stress potential induced by metabolic cage restraint that is markedly influenced by the lower housing temperature. The IMC represents a first attempt to target cold stress reduction during metabolic cage application thereby producing more animal welfare friendly data.
Im 19. Jahrhundert waren Konversationslexika, wie der Name schon andeutet, dazu gedacht, die Konversation in Salon und Vereinen mit Informationen zu bereichern. In den einzelnen Artikeln wurde auf Präzision, Genauigkeit und Überprüfbarkeit gesetzt, um der Leserschaft auch ein eigenes Urteil zu ermöglichen. Die „Seehandlungs-Societät in Preußen“ oder „Seehandlung, preußische“, wie sie in deutschen Lexika vorkommt, wandelte sich im 19. Jahrhundert zur Staatsbank. In der ersten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts fielen die Urteile der Lexika meist ablehnend aus: Die Seehandlung erschien als eine wirtschaftspolitisch katastrophale Fehlentwicklung. Eine besondere Rolle spielte der Präsident Christian (von) Rother, der die Seehandlung zum selbständigen Unternehmen gemacht hatte. Der Wandel der allgemeinen Lexika in der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts veränderte auch die Sicht auf die Seehandlung. Die Geschäfte der Bank wurden positiv hervorgehoben, die Beurteilungen verwiesen auf Statistiken und Bilanzen. Der Fokus rückte von den leitenden Personen der Seehandlung hin zum Kampf um Handelsmonopole und den preußischen Landtag als öffentlichem Forum. Das vernichtende Urteil der ersten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts war einer differenzierten Bewertung der Bankentätigkeit gewichen.
Childhood compared to adolescence and adulthood is characterized by high neuroplasticity represented by accelerated cognitive maturation and rapid cognitive developmental trajectories. Natural growth, biological maturation and permanent interaction with the physical and social environment fosters motor and cognitive development in children. Of note, the promotion of physical activity, physical fitness, and motor skill learning at an early age is mandatory first, as these aspects are essential for a healthy development and an efficient functioning in everyday life across the life span and second, physical activity behaviors and lifestyle habits tend to track from childhood into adulthood.
The main objective of the present thesis was to optimize and deepen the knowledge of motor and cognitive performance in young children and to develop an effective and age-appropriate exercise program feasible for the implementation in kindergarten and preschool settings. A systematic review with meta-analysis was conducted to examine the effectiveness of fundamental movement skill and exercise interventions in healthy preschool-aged children. Further, the relation between measures of physical fitness (i.e., static balance, muscle strength, power, and coordination) and attention as one domain of cognitive performance in preschool-aged children was analyzed. Subsequently, effects of a strength-dominated kindergarten-based exercise program on physical fitness components (i.e., static balance, muscle strength, power, and coordination) and cognitive performance (i.e., attention) compared to a usual kindergarten curriculum was examined.
The systematic review included trials focusing on healthy young children in kindergarten or preschool settings that applied fundamental movement skill-enhancing intervention programs of at least 4 weeks and further reported standardized motor skill outcome measures for the intervention and the control group. Children aged 4-6 years from three kindergartens participated in the cross-sectional and the longitudinal study. Product-orientated measures were conducted for the assessment of muscle strength (i.e., handgrip strength), muscle power (i.e., standing long jump), balance (i.e., timed single-leg stand), coordination (hopping on right/left leg), and attentional span (i.e., “Konzentrations-Handlungsverfahren für Vorschulkinder” [concentration-action procedure for preschoolers]).
With regards to the scientific literature, exercise and fundamental movement skill interventions are an effective method to promote overall proficiency in motor skills (i.e., object control and locomotor skills) in preschool children particularly when conducted by external experts with a duration of 4 weeks to 5 months. Moreover, significant medium associations were found between the composite score of physical fitness and attention as well as between coordination separately and attention in children aged 4-6 years. A 10-weeks strength-dominated exercise program implemented in kindergarten and preschool settings by educated and trained kindergarten teachers revealed significant improvements for the standing long jump test and the Konzentrations-Handlungsverfahren of intervention children compared to children of the control group.
The findings of the present thesis imply that fundamental movement skill and exercise interventions improve motor skills (i.e., locomotor and object control skills). Nonetheless, more high-quality research is needed. Additionally, physical fitness, particularly high performance in complex fitness components (i.e., coordination measured with the hopping on one leg test), tend to predict attention in preschool age. Furthermore, an exercise program including strength-dominated exercises, fundamental movement skills and elements of gymnastics has a beneficial effect on jumping performance with a concomitant trend toward improvements in attentional capacity in healthy preschool children. Finally, it is recommended to start early with the integration of muscular fitness (i.e., muscle strength, muscle power, muscular endurance) next to coordination, agility, balance, and fundamental movement skill exercises into regular physical activity curriculums in kindergarten settings.
Cosmic rays (CRs) constitute an important component of the interstellar medium (ISM) of galaxies and are thought to play an essential role in governing their evolution. In particular, they are able to impact the dynamics of a galaxy by driving galactic outflows or heating the ISM and thereby affecting the efficiency of star-formation. Hence, in order to understand galaxy formation and evolution, we need to accurately model this non-thermal constituent of the ISM. But except in our local environment within the Milky Way, we do not have the ability to measure CRs directly in other galaxies. However, there are many ways to indirectly observe CRs via the radiation they emit due to their interaction with magnetic and interstellar radiation fields as well as with the ISM.
In this work, I develop a numerical framework to calculate the spectral distribution of CRs in simulations of isolated galaxies where a steady-state between injection and cooling is assumed. Furthermore, I calculate the non-thermal emission processes arising from the modelled CR proton and electron spectra ranging from radio wavelengths up to the very high-energy gamma-ray regime.
I apply this code to a number of high-resolution magneto-hydrodynamical (MHD) simulations of isolated galaxies, where CRs are included. This allows me to study their CR spectra and compare them to observations of the CR proton and electron spectra by the Voyager-1 satellite and the AMS-02 instrument in order to reveal the origin of the measured spectral features.
Furthermore, I provide detailed emission maps, luminosities and spectra of the non-thermal emission from our simulated galaxies that range from dwarfs to Milk-Way analogues to starburst galaxies at different evolutionary stages. I successfully reproduce the observed relations between the radio and gamma-ray luminosities with the far-infrared (FIR) emission of star-forming (SF) galaxies, respectively, where the latter is a good tracer of the star-formation rate. I find that highly SF galaxies are close to the limit where their CR population would lose all of their energy due to the emission of radiation, whereas CRs tend to escape low SF galaxies more quickly. On top of that, I investigate the properties of CR transport that are needed in order to match the observed gamma-ray spectra.
Furthermore, I uncover the underlying processes that enable the FIR-radio correlation (FRC) to be maintained even in starburst galaxies and find that thermal free-free-emission naturally explains the observed radio spectra in SF galaxies like M82 and NGC 253 thus solving the riddle of flat radio spectra that have been proposed to contradict the observed tight FRC.
Lastly, I scrutinise the steady-state modelling of the CR proton component by investigating for the first time the influence of spectrally resolved CR transport in MHD simulations on the hadronic gamma-ray emission of SF galaxies revealing new insights into the observational signatures of CR transport both spectrally and spatially.
Studien zu langen Praxisphasen konnten aufzeigen, dass das Kompetenzerleben der Studierenden von Beginn bis zum Ende der Praxisphase zunahm. Auf Basis einer langfristig angelegten Evaluationsstudie zu allen bildungswissenschaftlichen und fachdidaktischen Praktika im Verlauf des Ba-/Ma-Lehramtsstudiums wurde auch das selbst eingeschätzte Kompetenzerleben Studierender im Schulpraktikum (Praxissemester) analysiert. Die empirische Befundlage deutet darauf hin, dass die Ausprägung des Kompetenzerlebens hinsichtlich SuSorientiertem Handeln, Unterrichtlichem Handeln und Wertvermittelndem Handeln über den Praktikumszeitraum zunimmt. Innovierend-kooperatives Handeln zeigt keine signifikante Entwicklung. Spezielle Einflüsse konnten vor allem durch das wahrgenommene Kompetenzerleben zu Beginn des Schulpraktikums, aber auch durch die jeweilige Nachbereitung der Fachdidaktik und der Bildungswissenschaften ermittelt werden. Die Befunde werden mit Blick auf die bisherige Forschungslage und die Stichprobe der Untersuchung kritisch diskutiert.
Early sensitivity to prosodic phrase boundary cues: Behavioral evidence from German-learning infants

This dissertation seeks to shed light on the relation of phrasal prosody and developmental speech perception in German-learning infants. Three independent empirical studies explore the role of acoustic correlates of major prosodic boundaries, specifically pitch change, final lengthening, and pause, in infant boundary perception. Moreover, it was examined whether the sensitivity to prosodic phrase boundary markings changes during the first year of life as a result of perceptual attunement to the ambient language (Aslin & Pisoni, 1980).
Using the headturn preference procedure six- and eight-month-old monolingual German-learning infants were tested on their discrimination of two different prosodic groupings of the same list of coordinated names either with or without an internal IPB after the second name, that is, [Moni und Lilli] [und Manu] or [Moni und Lilli und Manu]. The boundary marking was systematically varied with respect to single prosodic cues or specific cue combinations.
Results revealed that six- and eight-month-old German-learning infants successfully detect the internal prosodic boundary when it is signaled by all the three main boundary cues pitch change, final lengthening, and pause. For eight-, but not for six-month-olds, the combination of pitch change and final lengthening, without the occurrence of a pause, is sufficient. This mirrors an adult-like perception by eight-months (Holzgrefe-Lang et al., 2016). Six-month-olds detect a prosodic phrase boundary signaled by final lengthening and pause. The findings suggest a developmental change in German prosodic boundary cue perception from a strong reliance on the pause cue at six months to a differentiated sensitivity to the more subtle cues pitch change and final lengthening at eight months. Neither for six- nor for eight-month-olds the occurrence of pitch change or final lengthening as single cues is sufficient, similar to what has been observed for adult speakers of German (Holzgrefe-Lang et al., 2016).
The present dissertation provides new scientific knowledge on infants’ sensitivity to individual prosodic phrase boundary cues in the first year of life. Methodologically, the studies are pathbreaking since they used exactly the same stimulus materials – phonologically thoroughly controlled lists of names – that have also been used with adults (Holzgrefe-Lang et al., 2016) and with infants in a neurophysiological paradigm (Holzgrefe-Lang, Wellmann, Höhle, & Wartenburger, 2018), allowing for comparisons across age (six/ eight months and adults) and method (behavioral vs. neurophysiological methods). Moreover, materials are suited to be transferred to other languages allowing for a crosslinguistic comparison. Taken together with a study with similar French materials (van Ommen et al., 2020) the observed change in sensitivity in German-learning infants can be interpreted as a language-specific one, from an initial language-general processing mechanism that primarily focuses on the presence of pauses to a language-specific processing that takes into account prosodic properties available in the ambient language. The developmental pattern is discussed as an interplay of acoustic salience, prosodic typology (prosodic regularity) and cue reliability.
Obwohl der Reflexion von Unterricht eine zentrale Bedeutung für Lehrkräfte zukommt, ist die Reflexionsfähigkeit von Lehramtsstudierenden oftmals nur gering ausgeprägt und wird auch in Praxisphasen nicht automatisch weiterentwickelt. Es besteht also bereits im Studium ein Bedarf, die Studierenden bei der Entwicklung dieser Fähigkeit zu unterstützen. Hier soll die nachfolgend vorgestellte Lernumgebung ansetzen und eine systematische Erfassung, Rückmeldung und Förderung der Reflexionsfähigkeit ermöglichen. Die Lernumgebung ist für das Lehramtsstudium im Fach Physik entwickelt und besteht aus einem Diagnoseinstrument mit daran anschließendem Assessment-Feedback und Fördermaterial. Erste Untersuchungen zur Validität zeigen, dass die Studierenden während der Bearbeitung des Diagnoseinstruments inhaltlich relevante Überlegungen anstellen sowie das erhaltene Assessment-Feedback inhaltlich sinnvoll interpretieren und auch dem Fördermaterial einen Mehrwert für ihre Professionalisierung zusprechen.

The article aims to trace the contribution of Jewish women in the Yishuv’s maritime history. Taking the example of Henrietta Diamond, a founding member and chairperson of the Zebulun Seafaring Society, the article seeks to explore the representation and role of women in a growing Jewish maritime domain from the 1930s to the 1950s. It examines Zionist narratives on the ‘New Jew’ and the Jewish body and studies their relevance for the emerging field of maritime activities in the Yishuv. By contextualizing the work and depiction of Henrietta Diamond, the article sheds new light on the gendered notions that underlay the emergence of the Jewish maritime domain and illustrates the patterns of inclusion and exclusion in it.
Peer-Reviews werden seit geraumer Zeit in unterschiedlichen Lehrszenarien eingesetzt. In diesem Paper wird untersucht, inwieweit das Peer- Review die Auseinandersetzung mit den Inhalten eines Grundlagenmoduls in einem präsenzfreien Lehrszenario befördern kann. Dabei scheint in den Ergebnissen die Qualität der selbst erstellten Reviews einer der wichtigsten Einflussfaktoren für den Lernerfolg zu sein, während Experten-Feedback und weitere Faktoren deutlich untergeordnet erscheinen. Die Fähigkeit ausführliche Peer-Reviews zu verfassen geht einher mit dem Erwerb von fachlicher Kompetenz bzw. entsprechenden fachlichen Vorkenntnissen.
Barrierefreiheit kann durch Methoden der Informatik hergestellt und ausgebaut werden. Dieser eingeladene Beitrag stellt die Anforderungen von Menschen mit den umfangreichsten Benutzererfordernissen an Software vor, die z. B. eigene Schriftsysteme wie Braille und entsprechende taktile Ausgabegeräte verwenden. Assistive Technologien umfassen dabei auch Software verschiedenster Art. Es werden die wichtigsten Kompetenzen dafür vorgestellt. Im Curriculum der Informatik können diese Kompetenzen im Rahmen von speziellen Vorlesungen und Übungen vermittelt werden oder sie werden in die jeweiligen Fachgebiete integriert. Um den Studienbetrieb ebenfalls barrierefrei zu gestalten, sind weitere Anstrengungen notwendig, die Lehrende, Verwaltung und die Hochschulleitung einbeziehen.
Decubitus is one of the most relevant diseases in nursing and the most expensive to treat. It is caused by sustained pressure on tissue, so it particularly affects bed-bound patients. This work lays a foundation for pressure mattress-based decubitus prophylaxis by implementing a solution to the single-frame 2D Human Pose Estimation problem.
For this, methods of Deep Learning are employed. Two approaches are examined, a coarse-to-fine Convolutional Neural Network for direct regression of joint coordinates and a U-Net for the derivation of probability distribution heatmaps.
We conclude that training our models on a combined dataset of the publicly available Bodies at Rest and SLP data yields the best results. Furthermore, various preprocessing techniques are investigated, and a hyperparameter optimization is performed to discover an improved model architecture.
Another finding indicates that the heatmap-based approach outperforms direct regression.
This model achieves a mean per-joint position error of 9.11 cm for the Bodies at Rest data and 7.43 cm for the SLP data.
We find that it generalizes well on data from mattresses other than those seen during training but has difficulties detecting the arms correctly.
Additionally, we give a brief overview of the medical data annotation tool annoto we developed in the bachelor project and furthermore conclude that the Scrum framework and agile practices enhanced our development workflow.
Jacob Brandon Maduro’s Memoirs and Related Observations (Havana, 1953) speak to the lasting yet malleable legacy of Jewish Caribbean/Atlantic mercantile communities that defined early modern settlement in the Americas. A close reading of the Memoirs, alongside relevant archival records and community narratives, lends new perspectives to scholarship on Port Jewries and the Atlantic Diaspora. Specifically concerned with Jacob’s adoption of such leading intellectual and political tropes as the Monroe doctrine, José Martí’s Nuestra America, and a Zionism that evolved from an ideology to a reality, the Memoirs reveal a narrative at once defined by the tremendous upheavals of the first half of the 20th century, and an enduring sense of Jewish diasporic peoplehood defined through a Port Jew paradigm whereby the preservation of Jewish ethnicity is understood as synonymous with the championing of modernity.
“Financial Analysis” is an online course designed for professionals consisting of three MOOCs, offering a professionally and institutionally recognized certificate in finance. The course is open but not free of charge and attracts mostly professionals from the banking industry. The primary objective of this study is to identify indicators that can predict learners at high risk of failure. To achieve this, we analyzed data from a previous course that had 875 enrolled learners and involve in the course during Fall 2021. We utilized correspondence analysis to examine demographic and behavioral variables.
The initial results indicate that demographic factors have a minor impact on the risk of failure in comparison to learners’ behaviors on the course platform. Two primary profiles were identified: (1) successful learners who utilized all the documents offered and spent between one to two hours per week, and (2) unsuccessful learners who used less than half of the proposed documents and spent less than one hour per week. Between these groups, at-risk students were identified as those who used more than half of the proposed documents and spent more than two hours per week. The goal is to identify those in group 1 who may be at risk of failing and those in group 2 who may succeed in the current MOOC, and to implement strategies to assist all learners in achieving success.
Lehramtsstudierende äußern vielfach den Wunsch nach umfangreichen praktischen Lerngelegenheiten. Insbesondere fallbasierte Lehr-Lern-Konzepte scheinen diesen Ansprüchen gerecht zu werden. Dieser Beitrag stellt ein an der Universität Potsdam entwickeltes Seminarkonzept vor, welches diesen Transfer zu fördern versucht. Die Basis des Konzepts bildet der Einsatz erfahrungsbasiert entwickelter Textvignetten pädagogischer Situationen. Im Rahmen der Begleitseminare zum Praktikum in pädagogisch-psychologischen Handlungsfeldern (PppH) wurde die kollegiale Fallbesprechung als eine Form zur angestrebten Transferförderung in dieses Seminarkonzept integriert. Dieser Beitrag skizziert zunächst die erfahrungsbasierte Entwicklung der Vignetten sowie die theoretischen Grundlagen des Seminarkonzepts. Im Anschluss werden die praktische Implementation und erfahrungsbasierte konzeptionelle Änderung (design-based-research) in der Lehre beschrieben sowie erste Ergebnisse der systematischen empirischen Erprobung im Rahmen des PppH vorgestellt. Abschließend diskutieren die Autoren die Herausforderungen der praktischen Umsetzung auch mit Blick auf das Verstetigungsvorhaben.
Seit 2016 wird ePortfolioarbeit an der Universität Vechta im Rahmen der vom BMBF geförderten Qualitätsoffensive Lehrerbildung (QLB) Projekte (BRIDGES I und II) mit einem eigens dafür entwickelten digitalen Tool konzeptioniert, implementiert und formativ evaluiert. Über entsprechende Aufgabenstellungen wird dabei studiumsbegleitend und insbesondere in Praxisphasen auf die Anregung von Reflexivität, die als grundlegende Schlüsselkompetenz pädagogischer Professionalität verstanden wird, fokussiert. Im Beitrag werden die Konzeptionierung und Implementierung digitaler Portfolioarbeit inkl. Anlassbeispielen zur Anregung von Reflexion in der Lehrkräftebildung vorgestellt. Zudem werden Chancen und Grenzen der Reflexionsanregung unter Zuhilfenahme eines digitalen Portfolios diskutiert. Dabei unterstützt auch die Betrachtung von Gelingensbedingungen für digitale Reflexionsanregung.
Control over spin and electronic structure of MoS₂ monolayer via interactions with substrates

The molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) monolayer is a semiconductor with a direct bandgap while it is a robust and affordable material.
It is a candidate for applications in optoelectronics and field-effect transistors.
MoS2 features a strong spin-orbit coupling which makes its spin structure promising for acquiring the Kane-Mele topological concept with corresponding applications in spintronics and valleytronics.
From the optical point of view, the MoS2 monolayer features two valleys in the regions of K and K' points. These valleys are differentiated by opposite spins and a related valley-selective circular dichroism.
In this study we aim to manipulate the MoS2 monolayer spin structure in the vicinity of the K and K' points to explore the possibility of getting control over the optical and electronic properties.
We focus on two different substrates to demonstrate two distinct routes: a gold substrate to introduce a Rashba effect and a graphene/cobalt substrate to introduce a magnetic proximity effect in MoS2.
The Rashba effect is proportional to the out-of-plane projection of the electric field gradient. Such a strong change of the electric field occurs at the surfaces of a high atomic number materials and effectively influence conduction electrons as an in-plane magnetic field. A molybdenum and a sulfur are relatively light atoms, thus, similar to many other 2D materials, intrinsic Rashba effect in MoS2 monolayer is vanishing small. However, proximity of a high atomic number substrate may enhance Rashba effect in a 2D material as it was demonstrated for graphene previously.
Another way to modify the spin structure is to apply an external magnetic field of high magnitude (several Tesla), and cause a Zeeman splitting, the conduction electrons.
However, a similar effect can be reached via magnetic proximity which allows us to reduce external magnetic fields significantly or even to zero. The graphene on cobalt interface is ferromagnetic and stable for MoS2 monolayer synthesis. Cobalt is not the strongest magnet; therefore, stronger magnets may lead to more significant results.
Nowadays most experimental studies on the dichalcogenides (MoS2 included) are performed on encapsulated heterostructures that are produced by mechanical exfoliation.
While mechanical exfoliation (or scotch-tape method) allows to produce a huge variety of structures, the shape and the size of the samples as well as distance between layers in heterostructures are impossible to control reproducibly.
In our study we used molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) methods to synthesise both MoS2/Au(111) and MoS2/graphene/Co systems.
We chose to use MBE, as it is a scalable and reproducible approach, so later industry may adapt it and take over.
We used graphene/cobalt instead of just a cobalt substrate because direct contact of MoS2\ monolayer and a metallic substrate may lead to photoluminescence (PL) quenching in the metallic substrate. Graphene and hexagonal boron nitride monolayer are considered building blocks of a new generation of electronics also commonly used as encapsulating materials for PL studies. Moreover graphene is proved to be a suitable substrate for the MBE growth of transitional metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs).
In chapter 1,
we start with an introduction to TMDCs. Then we focus on MoS2 monolayer state of the art research in the fields of application scenario; synthesis approaches; electronic, spin, and optical properties; and interactions with magnetic fields and magnetic materials.
We briefly touch the basics of magnetism in solids and move on to discuss various magnetic exchange interactions and magnetic proximity effect.
Then we describe MoS2 optical properties in more detail. We start from basic exciton physics and its manifestation in the MoS2 monolayer. We consider optical selection rules in the MoS2 monolayer and such properties as chirality, spin-valley locking, and coexistence of bright and dark excitons.
Chapter 2 contains an overview of the employed surface science methods: angle-integrated, angle-resolved, and spin-resolved photoemission; low energy electron diffraction and scanning tunneling microscopy.
In chapter 3, we describe MoS2 monolayer synthesis details for two substrates: gold monocrystal with (111) surface and graphene on cobalt thin film with Co(111) surface orientation.
The synthesis descriptions are followed by a detailed characterisation of the obtained structures: fingerprints of MoS2 monolayer formation; MoS2 monolayer symmetry and its relation to the substrate below; characterisation of MoS2 monolayer coverage, domain distribution, sizes and shapes, and moire structures.
In chapter~4, we start our discussion with MoS2/Au(111) electronic and spin structure. Combining density functional theory computations (DFT) and spin-resolved photoemission studies, we demonstrate that the MoS2 monolayer band structure features an in-plane Rashba spin splitting. This confirms the possibility of MoS2 monolayer spin structure manipulation via a substrate.
Then we investigate the influence of a magnetic proximity in the MoS2/graphene/Co system on the MoS2 monolayer spin structure.
We focus our investigation on MoS2 high symmetry points: G and K.
First, using spin-resolved measurements, we confirm that electronic states are spin-split at the G point via a magnetic proximity effect. Second, combining spin-resolved measurements and DFT computations for MoS2 monolayer in the K point region, we demonstrate the appearance of a small in-plane spin polarisation in the valence band top and predict a full in-plane spin polarisation for the conduction band bottom.
We move forward discussing how these findings are related to the MoS2 monolayer optical properties, in particular the possibility of dark exciton observation. Additionally, we speculate on the control of the MoS2 valley energy via magnetic proximity from cobalt.
As graphene is spatially buffering the MoS2 monolayer from the Co thin film, we speculate on the role of graphene in the magnetic proximity transfer by replacing graphene with vacuum and other 2D materials in our computations.
We finish our discussion by investigating the K-doped MoS2/graphene/Co system and the influence of this doping on the electronic and spin structure as well as on the magnetic proximity effect.
In summary, using a scalable MBE approach we synthesised
MoS2/Au(111) and MoS2/graphene/Co systems. We found a Rashba effect taking place in MoS2/Au(111) which proves that the MoS2 monolayer in-plane spin structure can be modified. In MoS2/graphene/Co the in-plane magnetic proximity effect indeed takes place which rises the possibility of fine tuning the MoS2 optical properties via manipulation of the the substrate magnetisation.

Fast 40 Jahre nach dem Erscheinen von Donald Schöns Buch „The Reflective Practitioner: How Professionals Think In Action“ (1984) ist das Konzept der „reflexiven Kompetenz“ immer noch hochaktuell und wird daher in akademischen Kreisen weiterhin intensiv diskutiert. Der Artikel greift die Diskussionen zu diesem Thema im Bereich der Fremdsprachenlehrkräftebildung auf und unterstreicht sie mit Beispielen aus der universitären Aus- und Fortbildungspraxis für Deutsch als Fremd- und Zweitsprache in Brasilien und Deutschland. Auffällig ist dabei, dass es sowohl bei den Fragestellungen als auch bei den Maßnahmen und Instrumenten zahlreiche Überschneidungen gibt. Reflexion als Ziel in der Lehrkräftebildung kann somit als übergreifendes Thema wahrgenommen und weiterentwickelt werden.
Background: The worldwide prevalence of diabetes has been increasing in recent years, with a projected prevalence of 700 million patients by 2045, leading to economic burdens on societies. Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), representing more than 95% of all diabetes cases, is a multifactorial metabolic disorder characterized by insulin resistance leading to an imbalance between insulin requirements and supply. Overweight and obesity are the main risk factors for developing type 2 diabetes mellitus. The lifestyle modification of following a healthy diet and physical activity are the primary successful treatment and prevention methods for type 2 diabetes mellitus. Problems may exist with patients not achieving recommended levels of physical activity. Electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) is an increasingly popular training method and has become in the focus of research in recent years. It involves the external application of an electric field to muscles, which can lead to muscle contraction. Positive effects of EMS training have been found in healthy individuals as well as in various patient groups. New EMS devices offer a wide range of mobile applications for whole-body electrical muscle stimulation (WB-EMS) training, e.g., the intensification of dynamic low-intensity endurance exercises through WB-EMS. This dissertation project aims to investigate whether WB-EMS is suitable for intensifying low-intensive dynamic exercises such as walking and Nordic walking.
Methods: Two independent studies were conducted. The first study aimed to investigate the reliability of exercise parameters during the 10-meter Incremental Shuttle Walk Test (10MISWT) using superimposed WB-EMS (research question 1, sub-question a) and the difference in exercise intensity compared to conventional walking (CON-W, research question 1, sub-question b). The second study aimed to compare differences in exercise parameters between superimposed WB-EMS (WB-EMS-W) and conventional walking (CON-W), as well as between superimposed WB-EMS (WB-EMS-NW) and conventional Nordic walking (CON-NW) on a treadmill (research question 2). Both studies took place in participant groups of healthy, moderately active men aged 35-70 years. During all measurements, the Easy Motion Skin® WB-EMS low frequency stimulation device with adjustable intensities for eight muscle groups was used. The current intensity was individually adjusted for each participant at each trial to ensure safety, avoiding pain and muscle cramps. In study 1, thirteen individuals were included for each sub question. A randomized cross-over design with three measurement appointments used was to avoid confounding factors such as delayed onset muscle soreness. The 10MISWT was performed until the participants no longer met the criteria of the test and recording five outcome measures: peak oxygen uptake (VO2peak), relative VO2peak (rel.VO2peak), maximum walk distance (MWD), blood lactate concentration, and the rate of perceived exertion (RPE).
Eleven participants were included in study 2. A randomized cross-over design in a study with four measurement appointments was used to avoid confounding factors. A treadmill test protocol at constant velocity (6.5 m/s) was developed to compare exercise intensities. Oxygen uptake (VO2), relative VO2 (rel.VO2) blood lactate, and the RPE were used as outcome variables. Test-retest reliability between measurements was determined using a compilation of absolute and relative measures of reliability. Outcome measures in study 2 were studied using multifactorial analyses of variances.
Results: Reliability analysis showed good reliability for VO2peak, rel.VO2peak, MWD and RPE with no statistically significant difference for WB-EMS-W during 10WISWT. However, differences compared to conventional walking in outcome variables were not found. The analysis of the treadmill tests showed significant effects for the factors CON/WB-EMS and W/NW for the outcome variables VO2, rel.VO2 and lactate, with both factors leading to higher results. However, the difference in VO2 and relative VO2 is within the range of biological variability of ± 12%. The factor combination EMS∗W/NW is statistically non-significant for all three variables. WB-EMS resulted in the higher RPE values, RPE differences for W/NW and EMS∗W/NW were not significant.
Discussion: The present project found good reliability for measuring VO2peak, rel. VO2peak, MWD and RPE during 10MISWT during WB-EMS-W, confirming prior research of the test. The test appears technically limited rather than physiologically in healthy, moderately active men. However, it is unsuitable for investigating differences in exercise intensities using WB-EMS-W compared to CON-W due to different perceptions of current intensity between exercise and rest. A treadmill test with constant walking speed was conducted to adjust individual maximum tolerable current intensity for the second part of the project. The treadmill test showed a significant increase in metabolic demands during WB-EMS-W and WB-EMS-NW by an increased VO2 and blood lactate concentration. However, the clinical relevance of these findings remains debatable. The study also found that WB-EMS superimposed exercises are perceived as more strenuous than conventional exercise. While in parts comparable studies lead to higher results for VO2, our results are in line with those of other studies using the same frequency. Due to the minor clinical relevance the use of WB-EMS as exercise intensification tool during walking and Nordic walking is limited. High device cost should be considered. Habituation to WB-EMS could increase current intensity tolerance and VO2 and make it a meaningful method in the treatment of T2DM. Recent figures show that WB-EMS is used in obese people to achieve health and weight goals. The supposed benefit should be further investigated scientifically.

This book serves as a gateway to the Elementa grammaticae Huronicae, an eighteenth-century grammar of the Wendat (‘Huron’) language by Jesuit Pierre-Philippe Potier (1708–1781). The volume falls into three main parts. The first part introduces the grammar and some of its contexts, offering information about the Huron-Wendat and Wyandot, the early modern Jesuit mission in New France and the Jesuits’ linguistic output. The heart of the volume is made up by its second part, a text edition of the Elementa. The third part presents some avenues of research by way of specific case studies.
The TU Delft Extension School for Continuing Education develops and delivers MOOCs, programs and other online courses for lifelong learners and professionals worldwide focused on Science, Engineering & Design. At the beginning of 2022, we started a project to examine whether creating an online course had any impact on TU Delft campus education. Through a survey, we collected feedback from 68 TU Delft lecturers involved in developing and offering online courses and programs for lifelong learners and professionals. The lecturers reported on the impact of developing an online course on a personal and curricular level. The results showed that the developed online materials, and the acquired skills and experiences from creating online courses, were beneficial for campus education, especially during the transition to remote emergency teaching in the COVID-19 lockdown periods. In this short paper, we will describe the responses in detail and map the benefits and challenges experienced by lecturers when implementing their online course materials and newly acquired educational skills on campus. Finally, we will explore future possibilities to extend the reported, already relevant, impact of MOOCs and of other online courses on campus education.
Dieser Beitrag beschäftigt sich mit einer problematischen Seite der Samen- und Eizellenspende. Konkret konzentriert er sich auf die Anonymität im Rahmen dieses Verfahrens, die in manchen europäischen Staaten als eine gesetzliche Bedingung festgelegt ist. Es geht um eine Konsequenz der unklaren Regulierung auf EU-Ebene, die es ermöglicht, nationale Vorschriften nach individuellen Präferenzen des Gesetzgebers zu konzipieren. Trotzdem muss auch der menschenrechtliche Kontext berücksichtigt werden, weil die Anonymität des:der Spender:in dazu führt, dass das Kind de facto keine Chancen hat, seine (genetischen oder biologischen) Eltern zu kennen. Im Prinzip verletzt ein solcher Ansatz das Recht des Kindes auf Kenntnis der eigenen Abstammung, das in entsprechenden Menschenrechtskonventionen verankert und in der Judikatur des EGMR interpretiert wurde.

The World Health Organization designed OpenWHO.org to provide an inclusive and accessible online environment to equip learners across the globe with critical up-to-date information and to be able to effectively protect themselves in health emergencies. The platform thus focuses on the eXtended Massive Open Online Course (xMOOC) modality – contentfocused and expert-driven, one-to-many modelled, and self-paced for scalable learning. In this paper, we describe how OpenWHO utilized xMOOCs to reach mass audiences during the COVID-19 pandemic; the paper specifically examines the accessibility, language inclusivity and adaptability of hosted xMOOCs. As of February 2023, OpenWHO had 7.5 million enrolments across 200 xMOOCs on health emergency, epidemic, pandemic and other public health topics available across 65 languages, including 46 courses targeted for the COVID-19 pandemic. Our results suggest that the xMOOC modality allowed OpenWHO to expand learning during the pandemic to previously underrepresented groups, including women, participants ages 70 and older, and learners younger than age 20. The OpenWHO use case shows that xMOOCs should be considered when there is a need for massive knowledge transfer in health emergency situations, yet the approach should be context-specific according to the type of health emergency, targeted population and region. Our evidence also supports previous calls to put intervention elements that contribute to removing barriers to access at the core of learning and health information dissemination. Equity must be the fundamental principle and organizing criteria for public health work.
Dieses Literatur-Review verfolgt angesichts des gegenwärtigen, gesteigerten öffentlichen Interesses zum Thema von Arbeitszeitverkürzungsmodellen mit Gehaltsausgleich das Ziel, den aktuellen deutsch- und englischsprachigen Forschungsstand zum möglichen Nutzen von Arbeitszeitverkürzungen mit Gehaltsausgleich (AZV+) für den öffentlichen Arbeitgeber dar-zustellen und kritisch auszuwerten. Das Review basiert auf insgesamt zehn Publikationen, die zum großen Teil zu dem Schluss kommen, dass AZV+ zu keinen negativen Effekten, sondern zu entweder neutralen oder auch mehrheitlich positiven Auswirkungen auf die Arbeitgebendenseite führen. Dabei handelt es sich insbesondere um verbesserte Stresslevel, gesundheitliche Aspekte, gleichbleibende oder erhöhte Produktivität und Motivation/Energie sowie verringerte Absentismuszahlen. Die Anreiz-Beitrags-Theorie bietet sich als Erklärungsmodell für diese Ergebnisse gut an, da sie Aussagen darüber trifft, inwiefern Anreizsysteme wie eine AZV+ für Arbeitnehmende durch deren subjektive Bedürfnisbefriedigung unter Einhaltung bestimmter Grenzen (keine Überschreitung der Beitragsforderungen durch Anpassung des Workload) zu Effekten führen kann, die sich indirekt auch positiv hinsichtlich der Organisationsziele aus-wirken. Die ebenfalls angewandten motivationstheoretischen Elemente der Cognitive Evaluation Theory und der Motivation Crowding Theorie eignen sich weniger gut in ihrer Erklärungskraft der untersuchten Effekte, da die Differenzierung verschiedener Motivationsarten im Rahmen der hier untersuchten Studien unerheblich zu sein scheint. Insgesamt ist die Studienlage zu dem Thema AZV+ generell, und auch speziell im öffentlichen Sektor, sehr dünn und bietet kaum Möglichkeiten für generalisierende Aus-sagen, sodass ein großer Forschungsbedarf zu diesem Thema besteht.
Die vorgelegte Dissertation befasst sich mit der frühen Wortsegmentierung im monolingualen und bilingualen Spracherwerb. Die Wortsegmentierung stellt eine der wesentlichen Herausforderungen für Säuglinge im Spracherwerb dar, da gesprochene Sprache kontinuierlich ist und Wortgrenzen nicht zuverlässig durch akustische Pausen markiert werden. Zahlreiche Studien konnten für mehrere Sprachen zeigen, dass sich Segmentierungsfähigkeiten von monolingualen Säuglingen zwischen dem 6. und 12. Lebensmonat herausbilden (z. B. Englisch: Jusczyk, Houston & Newsome, 1999; Französisch: Nazzi, Mersad, Sundara, Iakimova & Polka, 2014; Deutsch: Höhle & Weissenborn, 2003; Bartels, Darcy & Höhle, 2009). Frühe Wortsegmentierungsfähigkeiten sind sprachspezifisch (Polka & Sundara, 2012). Crosslinguistische Studien zeigten, dass eine sprachübergreifende Segmentierung für einsprachig aufwachsende Säuglinge nur erfolgreich bewältigt wird, wenn die nicht-native Sprache rhythmische Eigenschaften mit ihrer Muttersprache teilt (Houston, Jusczyk, Kuijpers, Coolen & Cutler, 2000; Höhle, 2002; Polka & Sundara, 2012).
In vier Studien dieser Dissertation wurden mit behavioralen (Headturn Preference Paradigma) und elektrophysiologischen Untersuchungen (Elektroenzephalografie) monolingual Deutsch aufwachsende und bilingual Deutsch-Französisch aufwachsende Säuglinge im Alter von 9 Monaten untersucht. Dabei wurde der Frage nachgegangen, ob monolingual Deutsch aufwachsende Säuglinge im Alter von 9 Monaten in der Lage sind, ihre Muttersprache Deutsch und die rhythmisch unähnliche Sprache Französisch zu segmentieren. Mit anderen Worten: Können monolinguale Säuglinge im Alter von 9 Monaten ihre Segmentierungsprozeduren modifizieren bzw. von ihrer bevorzugten Segmentierung abweichen, um auch nicht-muttersprachlichen Input erfolgreich zu segmentieren?
Bezogen auf die bilingualen Sprachlerner wurde der Frage nachgegangen, ob zweisprachig aufwachsende Säuglinge vergleichbare Segmentierungsfähigkeiten wie monolingual aufwachsende Säuglinge aufweisen und ob sich zudem ein Einfluss der Sprachdominanz auf die Entwicklung der Wortsegmentierungsfähigkeiten in einer bilingualen Population zeigt.
Durch die gewählten Methoden konnten sowohl Verhaltenskorrelate als auch elektrophysiologische Korrelate zur Beantwortung der Fragestellungen herangezogen werden. Darüber hinaus ermöglichte das EEG durch ereigniskorrelierte Potenziale (EKPs) einen Einblick in Lern- und Verarbeitungsprozesse, die mit Verhaltensmethoden nicht erfassbar waren.
Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass monolingual Deutsch aufwachsende Säuglinge im Alter von 9 Monaten sowohl ihre Muttersprache als auch die nicht-native Sprache Französisch erfolgreich segmentieren. Die Fähigkeit zur Segmentierung der nicht-nativen Sprache Französisch wird jedoch beeinflusst von der Muttersprache: monolinguale Säuglinge, die mit Französisch zuerst getestet wurden, segmentierten sowohl das Französische als auch das im Anschluss präsentierte deutsche Sprachmaterial. Monolinguale Säuglinge die zuerst mit Deutsch und anschließend mit Französisch getestet wurden, segmentierten die deutschen Stimuli, jedoch nicht das französische Sprachmaterial.
Bilingual Deutsch-Französisch aufwachsende Säuglinge segmentieren im Alter von 9 Monaten beide Muttersprachen erfolgreich. Die Ergebnisse deuten zudem auf einen Einfluss der Sprachdominanz auf die Wortsegmentierungsfähigkeiten von zweisprachig aufwachsenden Säuglingen. Die balancierten Bilingualen segmentieren beide Muttersprachen erfolgreich, die unbalancierten Bilingualen zeigen nur für die jeweils dominante Sprache eine erfolgreiche Segmentierung.
Zusammenfassend liefert diese Arbeit erstmals Evidenz für eine erfolgreiche sprachübergreifende Segmentierung in prosodisch differenten Sprachen unterschiedlicher Rhythmusklassen in einer monolingualen Population. Darüber hinaus liefern die Studien dieser Arbeit Evidenz dafür, dass bilingual aufwachsende Säuglinge bezogen auf die Wortsegmentierungsfähigkeiten eine vergleichbare Entwicklung wie einsprachig aufwachsende Sprachlerner zeigen. Dieses Ergebnis erweitert die Datenlage bisheriger Studien, die für verschiedene Entwicklungsschritte im Spracherwerb keine Verzögerung, sondern eine zu monolingual aufwachsenden Säuglingen vergleichbare Entwicklung innerhalb einer bilingualen Population nachweisen konnten (Sprachdiskrimination: Byers-Heinlein, Burns & Werker, 2010; Bosch & Sebastian-Galles, 1997; Phonemdiskrimination: Albareda-Castellot, Pons & Sebastián-Gallés, 2011; Wahrnehmung rhythmischer Eigenschaften: Bijeljac-Babic, Höhle & Nazzi, 2016).
Die Herstellung von Produkten bindet Energie sowie auch materielle Ressourcen. Viel zu langsam entwickeln sich sowohl das Bewusstsein der Konsumenten sowie der Produzenten als auch gesetzgebende Aktivitäten, um zu einem nachhaltigen Umgang mit den zur Verfügung stehenden Ressourcen zu gelangen. In diesem Beitrag wird ein lokaler Remanufacturing-Ansatz vorgestellt, der es ermöglicht, den Ressourcenverbrauch zu reduzieren, lokale Unternehmen zu fördern und effiziente Lösungen für die regionale Wieder- und Weiterverwendung von Gütern anzubieten.
Zeitreisen erklären

Die vorliegende Arbeit dreht sich um die Frage, wie sich schlüssig und im Einklang mit gängigen philosophischen Modellen von Zeit und Identität über Zeitreisen sprechen lässt. Dabei läuft die Darstellung nicht auf einen einzelnen theoretischen Ansatz hinaus, sondern zeigt verschiedene Implikationen von Zeitreisen angesichts unterschiedlicher Konzepte von Zeit und Persistenz auf.
Gearbeitet wird mit den Zeitreise-Modellen von Jack Meiland (1974), Geoffrey Goddu (2003) und Peter van Inwagen (2010) und insbesondere Überlegungen zu growing block-Universen und vierdimensionaler Identität werden weitergeführt.
Schwerpunkte der Arbeit liegen einerseits auf Erklärungen zu Veränderungen der Vergangenheit und andererseits auf dem Problem der Bilokation durch Zeitreisen in Zeiten, zu denen die Zeitreisende bereits existiert.
Nicholas J. J. Smith (2015) hat als notwendige Voraussetzung für die Erklärbarkeit von Veränderungen der Vergangenheit dia-hyper-chrone Identitätsbedingungen für Jahre gefordert. Ich zeige, dass es sich hierbei um eine zu starke Forderung handelt. Demnach ist die Erklärung von Veränderungen der Vergangenheit durch Annihilation in growing block-Universen, wie Goddu und van Inwagen sie einführen, legitim.
Bilokation stellt eine Herausforderung für personale Identität dar. Ich schlage eine überarbeitete Definition von gegenwärtigen zeitlichen Teilen vor, die es zulässt, dass mehr als ein zeitlicher Teil einer diachron identischen Person synchron präsent sein kann. Auf diese Weise muss nicht zwischen zeitlichen Teilen und Personenstadien differenziert werden, wie Ted Sider (2001) es tut.
Ich komme im Rahmen dieser Arbeit zu den Ergebnissen, dass erstens bisher kein Modell von Zeit oder Persistenz bekannt ist, für das Zeitreisen grundsätzlich auszuschließen sind. Eine umfangreiche Systematik über Möglichkeiten und Implikationen von Zeitreisen bleibt jedoch lückenhaft, solange keine präsentistischen Modelle von Zeitreisen vorliegen. Zweitens erweisen sich Zeitreisen, die keine Veränderungen verursachen, nicht als weniger problematisch als Zeitreisen, die Veränderungen verursachen. Erstere werfen eigene Probleme auf, wie das Motivationsproblem und die Frage nach der Determination durch Zukunftsfakten. Drittens lassen sich trotz all der geleisteten Erklärungen weiterhin Szenarien entwickeln, die suspekt bleiben. Dies verweist auf die weiterführende Frage, inwiefern Chronologie wesentlich und unverzichtbar ist für die Intelligibilität beispielsweise sozialer Interaktionen und Institutionen.

Theodor Fontane war, im durchaus modernen Sinne, ein Medienarbeiter: Als Presse-Agent in London lernte er die innovativste Presselandschaft seiner Zeit kennen; als Redakteur in Berlin leistete er journalistische Kärrnerarbeit; er schrieb Kritiken über das Theater, die bildende Kunst und die Literatur – und auch seine Romane wie seine Reisebücher sind stets Medienprodukte, als Serien in in Zeitungen und Zeitschriften platziert, bevor sie auf dem Buchmarkt erschienen.
Der vorliegende Band dokumentiert die Ergebnisse eines internationalen Kongresses, veranstaltet 2019 vom Theodor-Fontane-Archiv in Potsdam. Die ebenso rasante wie umfassende Medialisierung und Vernetzung der Gesellschaft im Laufe des 19. Jahrhunderts wird dabei als produktive Voraussetzung der schriftstellerischen Tätigkeit Fontanes begriffen. Eingebettet in ein weit verzweigtes Netz der Korrespondenz und der postalischen Textzirkulation, vertraut mit den Routinen und Publika der periodischen Massenpresse, für die er sein Leben lang schrieb, und auf vielfältige Weise geprägt von der visuellen Kultur seiner Zeit wird Theodor Fontane als gleichermaßen journalistisch versierter wie ästhetisch sensibler Grenzgänger erkennbar.
Design Thinking is a human-centered approach to innovation that has become increasingly popular globally over the last decade. While the spread of Design Thinking is well understood and documented in the Western cultural contexts, particularly in Europe and the US due to the popularity of the Stanford-Potsdam Design Thinking education model, this is not the case when it comes to non-Western cultural contexts. This thesis fills a gap identified in the literature regarding how Design Thinking emerged, was perceived, adopted, and practiced in the Arab world. The culture in that part of the world differs from that of the Western context, which impacts the mindset of people and how they interact with Design Thinking tools and methods.
A mixed-methods research approach was followed in which both quantitative and qualitative methods were employed. First, two methods were used in the quantitative phase: a social media analysis using Twitter as a source of data, and an online questionnaire. The results and analysis of the quantitative data informed the design of the qualitative phase in which two methods were employed: ten semi-structured interviews, and participant observation of seven Design Thinking training events.
According to the analyzed data, the Arab world appears to have had an early, though relatively weak, and slow, adoption of Design Thinking since 2006. Increasing adoption, however, has been witnessed over the last decade, especially in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Egypt. The results also show that despite its limited spread, Design Thinking has been practiced the most in education, information technology and communication, administrative services, and the non-profit sectors. The way it is being practiced, though, is not fully aligned with how it is being practiced and taught in the US and Europe, as most people in the region do not necessarily believe in all mindset attributes introduced by the Stanford-Potsdam tradition.
Practitioners in the Arab world also seem to shy away from the 'wild side' of Design Thinking in particular, and do not fully appreciate the connection between art-design, and science-engineering. This questions the role of the educational institutions in the region since -according to the findings- they appear to be leading the movement in promoting and developing Design Thinking in the Arab world. Nonetheless, it is notable that people seem to be aware of the positive impact of applying Design Thinking in the region, and its potential to bring meaningful transformation. However, they also seem to be concerned about the current cultural, social, political, and economic challenges that may challenge this transformation. Therefore, they call for more awareness and demand to create Arabic, culturally appropriate programs to respond to the local needs. On another note, the lack of Arabic content and local case studies on Design Thinking were identified by several interviewees and were also confirmed by the participant observation as major challenges that are slowing down the spread of Design Thinking or sometimes hampering capacity building in the region. Other challenges that were revealed by the study are: changing the mindset of people, the lack of dedicated Design Thinking spaces, and the need for clear instructions on how to apply Design Thinking methods and activities. The concept of time and how Arabs deal with it, gender management during trainings, and hierarchy and power dynamics among training participants are also among the identified challenges. Another key finding revealed by the study is the confirmation of التفكير التصميمي as the Arabic term to be most widely adopted in the region to refer to Design Thinking, since four other Arabic terms were found to be associated with Design Thinking.
Based on the findings of the study, the thesis concludes by presenting a list of recommendations on how to overcome the mentioned challenges and what factors should be considered when designing and implementing culturally-customized Design Thinking training in the Arab region.
Die Arbeit befasst sich mit der Vorgabe des Aachener Vertrages, welche mit der Schaffung des Deutsch-Französischen Bürgerfonds die Zivilgesellschaften der beiden Partnerländer und ihr weiteres Zusammenwachsen in den Fokus genommen haben. Hierzu wird auf die Frage eingegangen, warum eine weitere deutsch-französische Organisation gerade in diesen Zeiten notwendig ist und warum ihr durch Ausgestaltung als möglichst eigenständige Institution die erforderliche Rolle als beständiger Motor für eine notwendige weitere Europäisierung zuteilwerden kann.
Der Bürgerfonds soll mithilfe seiner finanziellen Unterstützungsleistungen des binationalen Austausches von Bürgerinitiativen, Stiftungen, Kulturzentren, Vereinen, Städtepartnerschaften und sonstigen Formen privaten Engagements als „Leuchtturmprojekt des Aachener Vertrages“ diejenigen ansprechen, welche bislang nicht als klassische stakeholder der deutsch-französischen Freundschaft bekannt geworden sind.
Die Ausgestaltung des Bürgerfonds als eigenständige internationale Organisation erscheint vor dem Hintergrund dieser Zielsetzung die optimale Rechtsform. Seine generelle Aufbauorganisation sollte an der des Deutsch-Französischen Jugendwerks angelehnt werden. Insoweit war die Vorgabe der organisatorischen Einbindung des Bürgerfonds in das Jugendwerk im Rahmen der Pilotphase bis Ende 2022 nicht nur wegen der dort vorhandenen großen Expertise eine sinnvolle Entscheidung des Deutsch-Französischen Ministerrats.
Eine Erweiterung des Verwaltungs- bzw. Kontrollgremiums in einem selbständigen Bürgerfonds durch Vertreter der Deutsch-Französischen Parlamentarischen Versammlung erscheint zur Gewährleistung von Transparenz und tagespolitischer Unabhängigkeit ebenso ratsam, wie seine zumindest partielle Öffnung für andere europäische Mitgliedsstaaten.
Abschließend bleibt zu konstatieren, dass in den Zeiten kriselnder Demokratien und der COVID-Gefahr eine Hinwendung zu den Bürgern und ihren privaten bzw. para-öffentlichen Organisationsformen ebenso wichtig ist, wie die Förderung des Austausches der Bürger beider Länder im Herzen Europas mehr denn je hilft, Distanzen zu überwinden und transnationale Gemeinschaft zu erleben.
Exercise or not?

Objective: Individuals’ decisions to engage in exercise are often the result of in-the-moment choices between exercise and a competing behavioral alternative. The purpose of this study was to investigate processes that occur in-the-moment (i.e., situated processes) when individuals are faced with the choice between exercise and a behavioral alternative during a computerized task. These were analyzed against the background of interindividual differences in individuals’ automatic valuation and controlled evaluation of exercise.
Method: In a behavioral alternatives task 101 participants were asked whether they would rather choose an exercise option or a behavioral alternative in 25 trials. Participants’ gaze behavior (first gaze and fixations) was recorded using eye-tracking. An exercise-specific affect misattribution procedure (AMP) was used to assess participants’ automatic valuation of exercise before the task. After the task, self-reported feelings towards exercise (controlled evaluation) and usual weekly exercise volume were assessed. Mixed effects models with random effects for subjects and trials were used for data analysis.
Results: Choosing exercise was positively correlated with individuals’ automatic valuation (r = 0.20, p = 0.05), controlled evaluation (r = 0.58, p < 0.001), and their weekly exercise volume (r = 0.43, p < 0.001). Participants showed no bias in their initial gaze or number of fixations towards the exercise or the non-exercise alternative. However, participants were 1.30 times more likely to fixate on the chosen alternative first and more frequently, but this gaze behavior was not related to individuals’ automatic valuation, controlled evaluation, or weekly exercise volume.
Conclusion: The results suggest that situated processes arising from defined behavioral alternatives may be independent of individuals’ general preferences. Despite one’s best general intention to exercise more, the choice of a non-exercise alternative behavior may seem more appealing in-the-moment and eventually be chosen. New psychological theories of health behavior change should therefore better consider the role of potentially conflicting alternatives when it comes to initiating physical activity or exercise.
The field of exercise psychology has established robust evidence on the health benefits of physical activity. However, interventions to promote sustained exercise behavior have often proven ineffective. This dissertation addresses challenges in the field, particularly the neglect of situated and affective processes in understanding and changing exercise behavior. Dual process models, considering both rational and affective processes, have gained recognition. The Affective Reflective Theory of Physical Inactivity and Exercise (ART) is a notable model in this context, positing that situated processes in-the-moment of choice influence exercise decisions and subsequent exercise behavior.
The dissertation identifies current challenges within exercise psychology and proposes methodological and theoretical advancements. It emphasizes the importance of momentary affective states and situated processes, offering alternatives to self-reported measures and advocating for a more comprehensive modeling of individual variability. The focus is on the affective processes during exercise, theorized to reappear in momentary decision-making, shaping overall exercise behavior.
The first publication introduces a new method by using automated facial action analysis to measure variable affective responses during exercise. It explores how these behavioral indicators covary with self-reported measures of affective valence and perceived exertion. The second publication delves into situated processes at the moment of choice between exercise and non-exercise options, revealing that intraindividual factors play a crucial role in explaining exercise-related choices. The third publication presents an open-source research tool, the Decisional Preferences in Exercising Test (DPEX), designed to capture repeated situated decisions and predict exercise behavior based on past experiences.
The findings challenge previous assumptions and provide insights into the complex interplay of affective responses, situated processes, and exercise choices. The dissertation underscores the need for individualized interventions that manipulate affective responses during exercise and calls for systematic testing to establish causal links to automatic affective processes and subsequent exercise behavior. This dissertation highlights the necessity for methodological and conceptual refinements in understanding and promoting exercise behavior, ultimately contributing to the broader goal of combating increasing inactivity trends.
Morbus Parkinson (MP) ist in Europa die zweithäufigste neurodegenerative Erkrankung und durch das Störungsbild der Dysarthrie logopädisch relevant. Die Behandlung einer Dysarthrie erfordert ein hochfrequentes Therapieangebot für eine nachhaltige Verbesserung der kommunikativen Fähigkeiten. Trotz der hohen Prävalenz von Sprechstörungen bei MP nehmen in Deutschland nur etwa 4 % der Betroffenen eine ambulante logopädische Therapie in Anspruch. Die veränderte Selbstwahrnehmung der Patient*innen ist ein zentrales Symptom der Erkrankung, das ein wirksames Eigentraining einschränkt.
Neue Technologien mit integrierter Spracherkennung ermöglichen ein individuelles Training. Im Rahmen des Verbundprojektes HUMAINE (human centered AI network) wird der Prototyp eines auf künstlicher Intelligenz (KI) basierendem Sprechassistenzsystems in einem klinischen Versorgungssetting erprobt und evaluiert. Das Ziel ist, das digitale System in die Regelversorgung zu integrieren. Eine nutzer*innenzentrierte Implementierung ist im Rahmen einer Machbarkeitsstudie geplant, dabei wird der Prototyp ISi-Speech in die bestehende Parkinson-Komplex-Therapie integriert. Im Anschluss an die stationäre Behandlung erfolgt eine zweiwöchige Eigentrainingsphase im häuslichen Setting. Durch Interviews soll die Usability sowie die Anwender*innenakzeptanz aus der therapeutischen Sicht und Patient*innenperspektive erhoben werden. Ziel ist die Entwicklung von Implementierungsstrategien, die zur Entwicklung von nachhaltigen Kompetenzmodellen beitragen.
Durch die erhöhte Therapiefrequenz können verbesserte klinische Ergebnisgrößen wie Sprechverständlichkeit, Lebensqualität und individuell wahrgenommene Kommunikationserfolge erreicht werden. Nur durch die Evaluation digitaler Technologien kann eine dauerhafte Implementierung in die Praxis erfolgen. Neue Technologien können eine sinnvolle Ergänzung zur etablierten Therapie sein und eine Strategie gegen die Unterversorgung durch Heilmittel darstellen.
Viele Informatikstudierende sammeln bereits vor ihrem Studium berufliche Erfahrungen im Informatikbereich, ohne dass diese inhaltlich und didaktisch im Studium berücksichtigt werden. Dieser Beitrag geht der Frage nach, welche Kompetenzen aus beruflichen Vorqualifikationen bei Informatikstudierenden existieren und wie diese in Bezug zu Anerkennungsoptionen gesetzt werden können. Betrachtet werden: die pauschale Anerkennung, die auf erworbenen Zertifikaten beruht; die individuelle Anerkennung, bei der individuell erworbene Kompetenzen nachgewiesen werden; die Adaption von individuellen Lernwegen, die Teilkompetenzen der Studierenden berücksichtigt. Es wird eine Interviewstudie vorgestellt, in der Kompetenzen für ein Sample von Informatikstudierenden mit Vorqualifikation als Fachinformatiker/in erhoben und eine Zuordnung zu den Anerkennungsoptionen vorgenommen wurde. Für die präzisere Gestaltung von Anerkennungsprozessen und zur kritischen Reflexion der eingesetzten hochschuldidaktischen Konzepte wurde eine empirische Basis geschaffen. Die vorhandenen Konzepte richten sich traditionell an Abiturienten/ innen mit sehr geringem Informatikhintergrund und berücksichtigen die tatsächlich existierende Heterogenität der Studienanfänger/innen nicht angemessen. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass die Befragten aus ihrer Vorqualifikation relevante fachliche Kompetenzen mitbringen, die mit den Anerkennungsoptionen korrespondieren und deren Weiterentwicklung dienen können. Darüber hinaus werden aus überfachlichen Kompetenzen wie Selbststeuerungskompetenzen weitere Erkenntnisse zur Studiengestaltung gewonnen.
With the growing number of online learning resources, it becomes increasingly difficult and overwhelming to keep track of the latest developments and to find orientation in the plethora of offers. AI-driven services to recommend standalone learning resources or even complete learning paths are discussed as a possible solution for this challenge. To function properly, such services require a well-defined set of metadata provided by the learning resource. During the last few years, the so-called MOOChub metadata format has been established as a de-facto standard by a group of MOOC providers in German-speaking countries. This format, which is based on schema.org, already delivers a quite comprehensive set of metadata. So far, this set has been sufficient to list, display, sort, filter, and search for courses on several MOOC and open educational resources (OER) aggregators. AI recommendation services and further automated integration, beyond a plain listing, have special requirements, however. To optimize the format for proper support of such systems, several extensions and modifications have to be applied. We herein report on a set of suggested changes to prepare the format for this task.
From MOOC to “2M-POC”

IFP School develops and produces MOOCs since 2014. After the COVID-19 crisis, the demand of our industrial and international partners to offer continuous training to their employees increased drastically in an energy transition and sustainable mobility environment that finds itself in constant and rapid evolution. Therefore, it is time for a new format of digital learning tools to efficiently and rapidly train an important number of employees. To address this new demand, in a more and more digital learning environment, we have completely changed our initial MOOC model to propose an innovative SPOC business model mixing synchronous and asynchronous modules. This paper describes the work that has been done to transform our MOOCs to a hybrid SPOC model. We changed the format itself from a standard MOOC model of several weeks to small modules of one week average more adapted to our client’s demand. We precisely engineered the exchanges between learners and the social aspect all along the SPOC duration. We propose a multimodal approach with a combination of asynchronous activities like online module, exercises, and synchronous activities like webinars with experts, and after-work sessions. Additionally, this new format increases the number of uses of the MOOC resources by our professors in our own master programs.
With all these actions, we were able to reach a completion rate between 80 and 96% – total enrolled –, compared to the completion rate of 15 to 28% – total enrolled – as to be recorded in our original MOOC format. This is to be observed for small groups (50–100 learners) as SPOC but also for large groups (more than 2500 learners), as a Massive and Multimodal Private Online Course (“2M-POC”). Today a MOOC is not a simple assembly of videos, text, discussions forums and validation exercises but a complete multimodal learning path including social learning, personal followup, synchronous and asynchronous modules. We conclude that the original MOOC format is not at all suitable to propose efficient training to companies, and we must re-engineer the learning path to have a SPOC hybrid and multimodal training compatible with a cost-effective business model.
Thai MOOC academy

Thai MOOC Academy is a national digital learning platform that has been serving as a mechanism for promoting lifelong learning in Thailand since 2017. It has recently undergone significant improvements and upgrades, including the implementation of a credit bank system and a learner’s eportfolio system interconnected with the platform. Thai MOOC Academy is introducing a national credit bank system for accreditation and management, which allows for the transfer of expected learning outcomes and educational qualifications between formal education, non-formal education, and informal education. The credit bank system has five distinct features, including issuing forgery-prevented certificates, recording learning results, transferring external credits within the same wallet, accumulating learning results, and creating a QR code for verification purposes. The paper discusses the features and future potential of Thai MOOC Academy, as it is extended towards a sandbox for the national credit bank system in Thailand.
The role of biogenic carbonate producers in the evolution of the geometries of carbonate systems has been the subject of numerous research projects. Attempts to classify modern and ancient carbonate systems by their biotic components have led to the discrimination of biogenic carbonate producers broadly into Photozoans, which are characterised by an affinity for warm tropical waters and high dependence on light penetration, and Heterozoans which are generally associated with both cool water environments and nutrient-rich settings with little to no light penetration. These broad categories of carbonate sediment producers have also been recognised to dominate in specific carbonate systems. Photozoans are commonly dominant in flat-topped platforms with steep margins, while Heterozoans generally dominate carbonate ramps. However, comparatively little is known on how these two main groups of carbonate producers interact in the same system and impact depositional geometries responding to changes in environmental conditions such as sea level fluctuation, antecedent slope, sediment transport processes, etc. This thesis presents numerical models to investigate the evolution of Miocene carbonate systems in the Mediterranean from two shallow marine domains: 1) a Miocene flat-topped platform dominated by Photozoans, with a significant component of Hetrozoans in the slope and 2) a Heterozoan distally steepened ramp, with seagrass-influenced (Photozoan) inner ramp. The overarching aim of the three articles comprising this cumulative thesis is to provide a numerical study of the role of Photozoans and Heterozoans in the evolution of carbonate system geometries and how these biotas respond to changes in environmental conditions. This aim was achieved using stratigraphic forward modelling, which provides an approach to quantitatively integrate multi-scale datasets to reconstruct sedimentary processes and products during the evolution of a sedimentary system.
In a Photozoan-dominated carbonate system, such as the Miocene Llucmajor platform in Western Mediterranean, stratigraphic forward modelling dovetailed with a robust set of sensitivity tests reveal how the geometry of the carbonate system is determined by the complex interaction of Heterozoan and Photozoan biotas in response to variable conditions of sea level fluctuation, substrate configuration, sediment transport processes and the dominance of Photozoan over Heterozoan production. This study provides an enhanced understanding of the different carbonate systems that are possible under different ecological and hydrodynamic conditions. The research also gives insight into the roles of different biotic associations in the evolution of carbonate geometries through time and space. The results further show that the main driver of platform progradation in a Llucmajor-type system is the lowstand production of Heterozoan sediments, which form the necessary substratum for Photozoan production.
In Heterozoan systems, sediment production is mainly characterised by high transport deposits, that are prone to redistribution by waves and gravity, thereby precluding the development of steep margins. However, in the Menorca ramp, the occurrence of sediment trapping by seagrass led to the evolution of distal slope steepening. We investigated, through numerical modelling, how such a seagrass-influenced ramp responds to the frequency and amplitude of sea level changes, variable carbonate production between the euphotic and oligophotic zone, and changes in the configuration of the paleoslope. The study reinforces some previous hypotheses and presents alternative scenarios to the established concepts of high-transport ramp evolution. The results of sensitivity experiments show that steep slopes are favoured in ramps that develop in high-frequency sea level fluctuation with amplitudes between 20 m and 40 m. We also show that ramp profiles are significantly impacted by the paleoslope inclination, such that an optimal antecedent slope of about 0.15 degrees is required for the Menorca distally steepened ramp to develop.
The third part presents an experimental case to argue for the existence of a Photozoan sediment threshold required for the development of steep margins in carbonate platforms. This was carried out by developing sensitivity tests on the forward models of the flat-topped (Llucmajor) platform and the distally steepened (Menorca) platform. The results show that models with Photozoan sediment proportion below a threshold of about 40% are incapable of forming steep slopes. The study also demonstrates that though it is possible to develop steep margins by seagrass sediment trapping, such slopes can only be stabilized by the appropriate sediment fabric and/or microbial binding. In the Photozoan-dominated system, the magnitude of slope steepness depends on the proportion of Photozoan sediments in the system. Therefore, this study presents a novel tool for characterizing carbonate systems based on their biogenic components.
Das 16. Herbsttreffen Patholinguistik mit dem Schwerpunktthema »Schnittstelle Alltag: Transfer und Teilhabe in der Sprachtherapie« fand am 19.11.2022 als Online-Veranstaltung statt. Das Herbsttreffen wird seit 2007 jährlich vom Verband für Patholinguistik e.V. (vpl), seit 2021 vom Deutschen Bundesverband für akademische Sprachtherapie und Logopädie (dbs) in Kooperation mit der Universität Potsdam durchgeführt. Der vorliegende Tagungsband beinhaltet die Vorträge zum Schwerpunktthema sowie die Posterpräsentationen zu weiteren Themen aus der sprachtherapeutischen Forschung und Praxis.
Distributed decision-making studies the choices made among a group of interactive and self-interested agents. Specifically, this thesis is concerned with the optimal sequence of choices an agent makes as it tries to maximize its achievement on one or multiple objectives in the dynamic environment. The optimization of distributed decision-making is important in many real-life applications, e.g., resource allocation (of products, energy, bandwidth, computing power, etc.) and robotics (heterogeneous agent cooperation on games or tasks), in various fields such as vehicular network, Internet of Things, smart grid, etc.
This thesis proposes three multi-agent reinforcement learning algorithms combined with game-theoretic tools to study strategic interaction between decision makers, using resource allocation in vehicular network as an example. Specifically, the thesis designs an interaction mechanism based on second-price auction, incentivizes the agents to maximize multiple short-term and long-term, individual and system objectives, and simulates a dynamic environment with realistic mobility data to evaluate algorithm performance and study agent behavior.
Theoretical results show that the mechanism has Nash equilibria, is a maximization of social welfare and Pareto optimal allocation of resources in a stationary environment. Empirical results show that in the dynamic environment, our proposed learning algorithms outperform state-of-the-art algorithms in single and multi-objective optimization, and demonstrate very good generalization property in significantly different environments. Specifically, with the long-term multi-objective learning algorithm, we demonstrate that by considering the long-term impact of decisions, as well as by incentivizing the agents with a system fairness reward, the agents achieve better results in both individual and system objectives, even when their objectives are private, randomized, and changing over time. Moreover, the agents show competitive behavior to maximize individual payoff when resource is scarce, and cooperative behavior in achieving a system objective when resource is abundant; they also learn the rules of the game, without prior knowledge, to overcome disadvantages in initial parameters (e.g., a lower budget).
To address practicality concerns, the thesis also provides several computational performance improvement methods, and tests the algorithm in a single-board computer. Results show the feasibility of online training and inference in milliseconds.
There are many potential future topics following this work. 1) The interaction mechanism can be modified into a double-auction, eliminating the auctioneer, resembling a completely distributed, ad hoc network; 2) the objectives are assumed to be independent in this thesis, there may be a more realistic assumption regarding correlation between objectives, such as a hierarchy of objectives; 3) current work limits information-sharing between agents, the setup befits applications with privacy requirements or sparse signaling; by allowing more information-sharing between the agents, the algorithms can be modified for more cooperative scenarios such as robotics.
FRAKIS (Fragebogen zur frühkindlichen Sprachentwicklung) ist ein Elternfragenbogen zur Erfassung des Sprachstandes bei deutsch-sprachigen Kindern zwischen 18 und 30 Monaten und die deutsche Adaptation des MacArthur-Bates Communicative Development Inventory for Toddlers. Es gibt eine Langform (FRAKIS) und Kurzform (FRAKIS-K). Der lange Fragebogen enthält eine Wortliste von 600 Wörtern und Skalen zur Flexionsmorphologie und Syntax, die Kurzform eine Wortschatzliste von 102 Wörtern und drei Fragen zur Grammatik. Beide Fragebögen sind an einer Stichprobe von 1240 Kindern normiert. Die Normierungsstudie wird im Manual dargestellt. Normen werden in monatlichen Altersgruppen für Mädchen und Jungen getrennt, und für alle Kinder angegeben. Mit FRAKIS und FRAKIS-K stehen im deutschsprachigen Bereich erstmals Elternfragebögen zur Verfügung, die auf empirisch gesicherten, strengen Normierungsverfahren beruhen. Die Normwerte bringen ein Bezugssystem für das Ausmaß an Variabilität im frühen Spracherwerb. FRAKIS-K ist geeignet für die Sprachstandsbestimmung im Rahmen der kinderärztlichen Vorsorgeuntersuchungen. Kinder mit spätem oder verzögertem Sprachbeginn können identifiziert werden. Darüber hinaus sind die Fragebögen geeignet für eine Verlaufsbeobachtung der frühen Sprachentwicklung, ob in Forschung oder Praxis.
Die Studie untersucht, wie Lehrpersonen auf Primarstufe ihre Anleitungsstrategien bei der Durchführung von musikalischen Gestaltungsprozessen in ihren Schulklassen entwickeln. Die Entwicklungsprozesse wurden vom Forscher begleitet und mit Reflexionsimpulsen unterstützt. Lehrende und Forscher analysieren und diskutieren regelmässig das Unterrichtsgeschehen, um neue Wege der Anleitung anzubahnen. Im Fokus stehen die Lehrpersonen, ihr Wirken und ihre im Prozess sich vollziehende Professionalisierung.
Die Studie gliedert sich in vier Teile. Der erste Teil legt die musikfachlichen und professionstheoretischen Fundierungen dar. Diese Fundierungen bilden die Grundlage vorliegender fachgegenstandsspezifischer Professionalisierung. Der zweite Teil stellt das Forschungsformat von Design-based Research sowie dessen konkrete Adaption vor. Der dritte Teil expliziert das empirische Vorgehen im Feld. Der vierte Teil berichtet die Ergebnisse in Form von Designprinzipien und Designprodukten.
Die leitende Forschungsfrage lautet:
Wie verläuft der Kompetenzerwerb von Klassenlehrpersonen auf der Primarstufe beim Anleiten musikalischer Gestaltungsprozesse und wie lässt sich dieser Kompetenzerwerb mittels Reflexionstools unterstützen?
Das Forschungsziel ist demnach ein doppeltes: Erstens Erkenntnisgewinnung zur Struktur des Kompetenzerwerbs im begleiteten Selbstlernprozess der Lehrer:innen. Zweitens die Generierung von Reflexionstools, die Klassenlehrpersonen bei der Initiierung und Moderation musikalischer Gestaltungsprozesse in der Praxis unterstützen.
Die Untersuchung nimmt eine offene Herausforderung aus der Bildungspraxis als Ausgangspunkt für fachspezifische Professionalisierung an. Das Forschungsformat von Design-based Research erwies sich als sinnvolle Strategie, da die Lehrkräfte ihre Professionalisierung als theoriegestützten Selbstlernprozess in ihrem angestammten Praxisfeld angehen konnten.
Die Auswertung der Befragungen, die im Rahmen der Designprozesse erfolgten, zeigt, dass die Untersuchungsteilnehmenden ihr sozial-kommunikatives Verhalten sowie ihre fachdidaktischen Zugänge und Vorgehensweisen veränderten und in Richtung einer didaktisch-improvisierenden Handlungsweise zu erweitern vermochten.
Am Ende der Untersuchung entstanden drei Reflexionstools in unterschiedlichen Formaten und auf unterschiedlichen Abstraktionsniveaus: Das Reflexionstool try-outs beinhaltet konkrete Reflexionsimpulse (Handlungsanregungen und Reflexionsfragen) für das unterrichtliche Lehrer:innen-Handeln. Das dynamische Kompetenzmodell Kompetenzflyer bietet eine Reflexionsfolie für die Ansteuerung eigenständiger Kompetenzerwerbsschritte. Das online-Tool improspider ist ein Selbstreflexionsinstrument zur Einschätzung personaler Orientierungen und bildet, auf Basis empirisch erarbeiteter Merkmale einer didaktisch-improvisierenden Handlungsweise beim Anleiten musikalischer Gestaltungsprozesse, Improvisationskompetenz individuell ab.
Die Fluoreszenz-Calcium-Imaging-Methode wird auch heute noch als gängige Methode verwendet, vor allem wegen der geringeren Kosten für das Wirkstoffscreening in der pharmazeutischen Forschung, wobei Ionenkanäle sowie einige der G-Protein gekoppelte Rezeptoren (GPCRs) die Mehrzahl der Wirkstoffziele ansprechen. Die zellfreie Synthese eukaryotischer Proteine hat nicht die Nachteile, die bei der Überexpression dieser ionenpermeablen Proteine in Zellen auftreten können, wie z. B. Zelltoxizität, geringere Proteinexpression und die Beseitigung der exprimierten Proteine aufgrund veränderter Domänen sowie die zeitaufwändige Pflege von Zelllinien. Die Synthese von Ionenkanälen in zellfreien Proteinsyntheseplattformen für das künftige Wirkstoffscreening ist noch in der Grundlagenforschung. Obwohl die Fluoreszenz-Calcium-Imaging-Methode in zellbasierten Assays weit verbreitet ist, wurde diese Methode bisher noch nicht in zellfreien Proteinexpressionssystemen verwendet. Insgesamt ist die neue Anwendung der Calcium-Imaging-Methode in eukaryontischen zellfreien Systemen eine Voraussetzung für die schnelle pharmakologische Analyse von Wirkstoffen. Das erste Ziel dieser wissenschaftlichen Arbeit bestand darin, die grundlegenden Prinzipien der Calcium-Imaging-Methode zur Untersuchung von Ionenkanälen in zellbasierten Systemen zu untersuchen. Hierfür wurden zwei Tumorzelllinien des Auges verwendet, und zwar benigne Pterygiumzellen und maligne Aderhautmelanom 92.1 Zellen. In diesen Studien wurde die Interaktion zwischen den nativ überexprimierten transient-receptor-potential-Ionenkanälen (TRPs) wie TRP Vanilliod 1 (TRPV1) (Capsaicinrezeptor) und TRP Melastatin 8 (TRPM8) (Mentholrezeptor) in diesen Tumorzellen nach Zugabe von verschiedenen Medikamenten und Hormonen untersucht. Das zweite Ziel dieser Arbeit war es, den Calcium-Mechanismus von GPCRs in den Zellen zu untersuchen. Zu diesem Zweck wurde Mas, ein GPCR und Angiotensin (1-7) -Hormonrezeptor, aus dem renin-angiotensin-aldosteron-system (RAAS) in der Human Embryonic Kidney-293 (HEK293) Zelllinie überexprimiert. In dieser Studie wurden insbesondere die Aktivierung klassischer GPCR-Signalwege wie Phospholipase C und Proteinkinase C durch Angiotensin-(1-7) über Mas und die Beteiligung von TRP-Kanälen nachgewiesen. Die zellbasierte-Calcium-Imaging-Methode für chemische Calcium-Indikatoren ließ sich aufgrund der Anwesenheit einer großen Menge cytosolischer Carboxylesterasen gut anwenden. Carboxylesterase ist das wichtigste Enzym in der Calcium Imaging Methode, das die Verarbeitung chemischen Calcium-Farbstoffe behandelt. Dieses Enzym fehlt jedoch in Mikrosomen, die als Basismembran für die Integration synthetisierter Ionenkanäle in eukaryontischen zellfreien Systemen verwendet werden. Das dritte Ziel dieser Forschungsarbeit war die Umsetzung der zellbasierten Calcium-Imaging Methode und der Calcium-Signalwege in zellfreie Systeme. Hier wurde die zellfrei synthetisierte Carboxylesterase in Mikrosomen von Spodoptera frugiperda (Sf21) als praktikables Calcium-Imaging-Werkzeug etabliert, um sowohl native ionenpermeable Proteine als auch zellfrei-synthetisierte Ionenkanäle zu untersuchen. Die Enzymaktivität der zellfrei-synthetisierten Carboxylesterase in Mikrosomen wurde durch Esterase-Assays und den Calcium-Fluoreszenzfarbstoff Fluo-5N Acetoxymethylester (Fluo-5N AM) Belastungstests nachgewiesen. Das Calcium-Imaging der nativ vorhandenen Ca2+-ATPase des sarkoplasmatischen/endoplasmatischen Retikulums (SERCA) und der Ryanodin-Rezeptoren (RyR) in den Mikrosomen sowie der zell-frei exprimierten TRP-Ionenkanäle wurden mit dem Fura-5N-AM- Fluoreszenzfarbstoff in mit Carboxylesterase vorsynthetisierten Mikrosomen nachgewiesen.
Zusammenfassend lässt sich sagen, dass das Prinzip der zellbasierten Calcium-Imaging -Methode vielversprechend an das eukaryotische zellfreie Sf21-System angepasst werden konnte, um Ionenkanäle zu analysieren. Nach entsprechender Forschung könnte die etablierte Methode in Zukunft auch auf andere Membranproteine ausgeweitet werden. Dies umfasst die Untersuchung anderer zell-frei exprimierte GPCRs oder anderer Ionenkanäle wie Kalium-, Natrium- und Chlorid-Ionenkanäle.
Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), characterised by a chronic inflammation of the gut wall, develop as consequence of an overreacting immune response to commensal bacteria, caused by a combination of genetic and environmental conditions. Large inter-individual differences in the outcome of currently available therapies complicate the decision for the best option for an individual patient. Predicting the prospects of therapeutic success for an individual patient is currently only possible to a limited extent; for this, a better understanding of possible differences between responders and non-responders is needed.
In this thesis, we have developed a mathematical model describing the most important processes of the gut mucosal immune system on the cellular level. The model is based on literature data, which were on the one hand used (qualitatively) to choose which cell types and processes to incorporate and to derive the model structure, and on the other hand (quantitatively) to derive the parameter values. Using ordinary differential equations, it describes the concentration-time course of neutrophils, macrophages, dendritic cells, T cells and bacteria, each subdivided into different cell types and activation states, in the lamina propria and mesenteric lymph nodes. We evaluate the model by means of simulations of the healthy immune response to salmonella infection and mucosal injury.
A virtual population includes IBD patients, which we define through their initially asymptomatic, but after a trigger chronically inflamed gut wall. We demonstrate the model's usefulness in different analyses: (i) The comparison of virtual IBD patients with virtual healthy individuals shows that the disease is elicited by many small or fewer large changes, and allows to make hypotheses about dispositions relevant for development of the disease. (ii) We simulate the effects of different therapeutic targets and make predictions about the therapeutic outcome based on the pre-treatment state. (iii) From the analysis of differences between virtual responders and non-responders, we derive hypotheses about reasons for the inter-individual variability in treatment outcome. (iv) For the example of anti-TNF-alpha therapy, we analyse, which alternative therapies are most promising in case of therapeutic failure, and which therapies are most suited for combination therapies: For drugs also directly targeting the cytokine levels or inhibiting the recruitment of innate immune cells, we predict a low probability of success when used as alternative treatment, but a large gain when used in a combination treatment. For drugs with direct effects on T cells, via modulation of the sphingosine-1-phosphate receptor or inhibition of T cell proliferation, we predict a considerably larger probability of success when used as alternative treatment, but only a small additional gain when used in a combination therapy.

Their exploits fire the imaginations of their victims and admirers, drawing a veil over individuals who rarely bear a real name and pursue their adventurous occupations as buccaneers, filibusters, freebooters, privateers, pirates, or corsairs. Piracy, corsairing, and contraband trade were epidemic among the Egyptians and the Phoenicians, the Greeks and the Vikings, the Spaniards and the Ottomans, the Muslims, and the Christians. And the Jews.
Fabricating electronic devices from natural, renewable resources has been a common goal in engineering and materials science for many years. In this regard, carbon is of special significance due to its biological compatibility. In the laboratory, carbonized materials and their composites have been proven as promising solutions for a range of future applications in electronics, optoelectronics, or catalytic systems. On the industrial scale, however, their application is inhibited by tedious and expensive preparation processes and a lack of control over the processing and material parameters. Therefore, we are exploring new concepts for the direct utilization of functional carbonized materials in electronic applications. In particular, laser-induced carbonization (carbon laser-patterning (CLaP)) is emerging as a new tool for the precise and selective synthesis of functional carbon-based materials for flexible on-chip applications.
We developed an integrated approach for on-the-spot laser-induced synthesis of flexible, carbonized films with specific functionalities. To this end, we design versatile precursor inks made from naturally abundant starting compounds and reactants to cast films which are carbonized with an infrared laser to obtain functional patterns of conductive porous carbon networks. In our studies we obtained deep mechanistic insights into the formation process and the microstructure of laser-patterned carbons (LP-C). We shed light on the kinetic reaction mechanism based on the interplay between the precursor properties and the reaction conditions. Furthermore, we investigated the use of porogens, additives, and reactants to provide a toolbox for the chemical and physical fine-tuning of the electronic and surface properties and the targeted integration of functional sites into the carbon network. Based on this knowledge, we developed prototype resistive chemical and mechanical sensors. In further studies, we show the applicability of LP-C as electrode materials in electrocatalytic and charge-storage applications.
To put our findings into a common perspective, our results are embedded into the context of general carbonization strategies, fundamentals of laser-induced materials processing, and a broad literature review on state-of-the-art laser-carbonization, in the general part.
Justice structures societies and social relations of any kind; its psychological integration provides a fundamental cornerstone for social, moral, and personality development. The trait justice sensitivity captures individual differences in responses toward perceived injustice (JS; Schmitt et al., 2005, 2010). JS has shown substantial relations to social and moral behavior in adult and adolescent samples; however, it was not yet investigated in middle childhood despite this being a sensitive phase for personality development. JS differentiates in underlying perspectives that are either more self- or other-oriented regarding injustice, with diverging outcome relations. The present research project investigated JS and its perspectives in children aged 6 to 12 years with a special focus on variables of social and moral development as potential correlates and outcomes in four cross-sectional studies. Study 1 started with a closer investigation of JS trait manifestation, measurement, and relations to important variables from the nomological network, such as temperamental dimensions, social-cognitive skills, and global pro- and antisocial behavior in a pilot sample of children from south Germany. Study 2 investigated relations between JS and distributive behavior following distributive principles in a large-scale data set of children from Berlin and Brandenburg. Study 3 explored the relations of JS with moral reasoning, moral emotions, and moral identity as important precursors of moral development in the same large-scale data set. Study 4 investigated punishment motivation to even out, prevent, or compensate norm transgressions in a subsample, whereby JS was considered as a potential predictor of different punishment motives. All studies indicated that a large-scale, economic measurement of JS is possible at least from middle childhood onward. JS showed relations to temperamental dimensions, social skills, global social behavior; distributive decisions and preferences for distributive principles; moral reasoning, emotions, and identity; as well as with punishment motivation; indicating that trait JS is highly relevant for social and moral development. The underlying self- or other-oriented perspectives showed diverging correlate and outcome relations mostly in line with theory and previous findings from adolescent and adult samples, but also provided new theoretical ideas on the construct and its differentiation. Findings point to an early internal justice motive underlying trait JS, but additional motivations underlying the JS perspectives. Caregivers, educators, and clinical psychologists should pay attention to children’s JS and toward promoting an adaptive justice-related personality development to foster children’s prosocial and moral development as well as their mental health.
Magmatic-hydrothermal systems form a variety of ore deposits at different proximities to upper-crustal hydrous magma chambers, ranging from greisenization in the roof zone of the intrusion, porphyry mineralization at intermediate depths to epithermal vein deposits near the surface. The physical transport processes and chemical precipitation mechanisms vary between deposit types and are often still debated.
The majority of magmatic-hydrothermal ore deposits are located along the Pacific Ring of Fire, whose eastern part is characterized by the Mesozoic to Cenozoic orogenic belts of the western North and South Americas, namely the American Cordillera. Major magmatic-hydrothermal ore deposits along the American Cordillera include (i) porphyry Cu(-Mo-Au) deposits (along the western cordilleras of Mexico, the western U.S., Canada, Chile, Peru, and Argentina); (ii) Climax- (and sub−) type Mo deposits (Colorado Mineral Belt and northern New Mexico); and (iii) porphyry and IS-type epithermal Sn(-W-Ag) deposits of the Central Andean Tin Belt (Bolivia, Peru and northern Argentina).
The individual studies presented in this thesis primarily focus on the formation of different styles of mineralization located at different proximities to the intrusion in magmatic-hydrothermal systems along the American Cordillera. This includes (i) two individual geochemical studies on the Sweet Home Mine in the Colorado Mineral Belt (potential endmember of peripheral Climax-type mineralization); (ii) one numerical modeling study setup in a generic porphyry Cu-environment; and (iii) a numerical modeling study on the Central Andean Tin Belt-type Pirquitas Mine in NW Argentina.
Microthermometric data of fluid inclusions trapped in greisen quartz and fluorite from the Sweet Home Mine (Detroit City Portal) suggest that the early-stage mineralization precipitated from low- to medium-salinity (1.5-11.5 wt.% equiv. NaCl), CO2-bearing fluids at temperatures between 360 and 415°C and at depths of at least 3.5 km. Stable isotope and noble gas isotope data indicate that greisen formation and base metal mineralization at the Sweet Home Mine was related to fluids of different origins. Early magmatic fluids were the principal source for mantle-derived volatiles (CO2, H2S/SO2, noble gases), which subsequently mixed with significant amounts of heated meteoric water. Mixing of magmatic fluids with meteoric water is constrained by δ2Hw-δ18Ow relationships of fluid inclusions. The deep hydrothermal mineralization at the Sweet Home Mine shows features similar to deep hydrothermal vein mineralization at Climax-type Mo deposits or on their periphery. This suggests that fluid migration and the deposition of ore and gangue minerals in the Sweet Home Mine was triggered by a deep-seated magmatic intrusion.
The second study on the Sweet Home Mine presents Re-Os molybdenite ages of 65.86±0.30 Ma from a Mo-mineralized major normal fault, namely the Contact Structure, and multimineral Rb-Sr isochron ages of 26.26±0.38 Ma and 25.3±3.0 Ma from gangue minerals in greisen assemblages. The age data imply that mineralization at the Sweet Home Mine formed in two separate events: Late Cretaceous (Laramide-related) and Oligocene (Rio Grande Rift-related). Thus, the age of Mo mineralization at the Sweet Home Mine clearly predates that of the Oligocene Climax-type deposits elsewhere in the Colorado Mineral Belt. The Re-Os and Rb-Sr ages also constrain the age of the latest deformation along the Contact Structure to between 62.77±0.50 Ma and 26.26±0.38 Ma, which was employed and/or crosscut by Late Cretaceous and Oligocene fluids. Along the Contact Structure Late Cretaceous molybdenite is spatially associated with Oligocene minerals in the same vein system, a feature that precludes molybdenite recrystallization or reprecipitation by Oligocene ore fluids.
Ore precipitation in porphyry copper systems is generally characterized by metal zoning (Cu-Mo to Zn-Pb-Ag), which is suggested to be variably related to solubility decreases during fluid cooling, fluid-rock interactions, partitioning during fluid phase separation and mixing with external fluids. The numerical modeling study setup in a generic porphyry Cu-environment presents new advances of a numerical process model by considering published constraints on the temperature- and salinity-dependent solubility of Cu, Pb and Zn in the ore fluid. This study investigates the roles of vapor-brine separation, halite saturation, initial metal contents, fluid mixing, and remobilization as first-order controls of the physical hydrology on ore formation. The results show that the magmatic vapor and brine phases ascend with different residence times but as miscible fluid mixtures, with salinity increases generating metal-undersaturated bulk fluids. The release rates of magmatic fluids affect the location of the thermohaline fronts, leading to contrasting mechanisms for ore precipitation: higher rates result in halite saturation without significant metal zoning, lower rates produce zoned ore shells due to mixing with meteoric water. Varying metal contents can affect the order of the final metal precipitation sequence. Redissolution of precipitated metals results in zoned ore shell patterns in more peripheral locations and also decouples halite saturation from ore precipitation.
The epithermal Pirquitas Sn-Ag-Pb-Zn mine in NW Argentina is hosted in a domain of metamorphosed sediments without geological evidence for volcanic activity within a distance of about 10 km from the deposit. However, recent geochemical studies of ore-stage fluid inclusions indicate a significant contribution of magmatic volatiles. This study tested different formation models by applying an existing numerical process model for porphyry-epithermal systems with a magmatic intrusion located either at a distance of about 10 km underneath the nearest active volcano or hidden underneath the deposit. The results show that the migration of the ore fluid over a 10-km distance results in metal precipitation by cooling before the deposit site is reached. In contrast, simulations with a hidden magmatic intrusion beneath the Pirquitas deposit are in line with field observations, which include mineralized hydrothermal breccias in the deposit area.
Das Vorsorgeprinzip ist ein mittlerweile weit verbreiteter und etablierter Grundsatz des internationalen und europäischen Umweltrechts. Demnach sollen auch in Situationen wissenschaftlicher Unsicherheit präventive Maßnahmen ergriffen werden, um schwerwiegende Umweltschäden zu vermeiden. Dieser Beitrag untersucht die Rolle des Vorsorgeprinzips im Zusammenhang mit menschenrechtlichen Klimaklagen, die aufgrund langsamer politischer Fortschritte und erfolgreicher Gerichtsentscheidungen zunehmend an Popularität gewinnen.
Zunächst wird ein Überblick über die Entwicklung und den materiellen Gehalt des Vorsorgeprinzips im internationalen und europäischen Recht gegeben. Obwohl das Vorsorgeprinzip seit den 1980er Jahren ein fixer Bestandteil des internationalen Umweltrechts ist, bestehen über dessen genauen Inhalt und Rechtsnatur nach wie vor Kontroversen. Im Unionsrecht wurde das Vorsorgeprinzip insbesondere durch die Rechtsprechung des EuGH konkretisiert.
Im nächsten Teil des Beitrags wird beleuchtet, welche Bedeutung der EGMR dem Vorsorgeprinzip in umweltrechtlichen Fällen bisher zugemessen hat. Hierbei steht die Entscheidung Tǎtar gegen Rumänien im Mittelpunkt. Gegenstand dieser Entscheidung war der Goldabbau in der rumänischen Stadt Baia Mare, der unter anderem unter dem Einsatz von Natriumzyanid erfolgte und zu wesentlichen Schadstoffbelastungen führte. Der EGMR bejahte unter Verweis auf das Vorsorgeprinzip eine Verletzung von Art. 8 EMRK, obwohl der Beschwerdeführer die Kausalität zwischen der Schadstoffbelastung und der behaupteten Schädigung nicht nachweisen konnte. Eine Analyse der nachfolgenden Entscheidungen veranschaulicht jedoch, dass sich das Vorsorgeprinzip noch nicht als fixer Bestandteil in der Rechtsprechung des EGMR etablieren konnte.
Abschließend wird gezeigt, welchen Beitrag das Vorsorgeprinzip zu der bisher wohl erfolgreichsten Klimaklage „Urgenda“ leistete. Das Vorsorgeprinzip wurde vom niederländischen Höchstgericht in diesem Fall insbesondere herangezogen, um Schutzpflichten aus Art. 2 und Art. 8 EMRK abzuleiten und den staatlichen Ermessenspielraum einzuschränken.
Animal movement is a crucial aspect of life, influencing ecological and evolutionary processes. It plays an important role in shaping biodiversity patterns, connecting habitats and ecosystems. Anthropogenic landscape changes, such as in agricultural environments, can impede the movement of animals by affecting their ability to locate resources during recurring movements within home ranges and, on a larger scale, disrupt migration or dispersal. Inevitably, these changes in movement behavior have far-reaching consequences on the mobile link functions provided by species inhabiting such extensively altered matrix areas. In this thesis, I investigate the movement characteristics and activity patterns of the European hare (Lepus europaeus), aiming to understand their significance as a pivotal species in fragmented agricultural landscapes. I reveal intriguing results that shed light on the importance of hares for seed dispersal, the influence of personality traits on behavior and space use, the sensitivity of hares to extreme weather conditions, and the impacts of GPS collaring on mammals' activity patterns and movement behavior.
In Chapter I, I conducted a controlled feeding experiment to investigate the potential impact of hares on seed dispersal. By additionally utilizing GPS data of hares in two contrasting landscapes, I demonstrated that hares play a vital role, acting as effective mobile linkers for many plant species in small and isolated habitat patches. The analysis of seed intake and germination success revealed that distinct seed traits, such as density, surface area, and shape, profoundly affect hares' ability to disperse seeds through endozoochory. These findings highlight the interplay between hares and plant communities and thus provide valuable insights into seed dispersal mechanisms in fragmented landscapes.
By employing standardized behavioral tests in Chapter II, I revealed consistent behavioral responses among captive hares while simultaneously examining the intricate connection between personality traits and spatial patterns within wild hare populations. This analysis provides insights into the ecological interactions and dynamics within hare populations in agricultural habitats. Examining the concept of animal personality, I established a link between personality traits and hare behavior. I showed that boldness, measured through standardized tests, influences individual exploration styles, with shy and bold hares exhibiting distinct space use patterns. In addition to providing valuable insights into the role of animal personality in heterogeneous environments, my research introduced a novel approach demonstrating the feasibility of remotely assessing personality types using animal-borne sensors without additional disturbance of the focal individual.
While climate conditions severely impact the activity and, consequently, the fitness of wildlife species across the globe, in Chapter III, I uncovered the sensitivity of hares to temperature, humidity, and wind speed during their peak reproduction period. I found a strong response in activity to high temperatures above 25°C, with a particularly pronounced effect during temperature extremes of over 35°C. The non-linear relationship between temperature and activity was characterized by contrasting responses observed for day and night. These findings emphasize the vulnerability of hares to climate change and the potential consequences for their fitness and population dynamics with the ongoing rise of temperature.
Since such insights can only be obtained through capturing and tagging free-ranging animals, I assessed potential impacts and the recovery process post-collar attachment in Chapter IV. For this purpose, I examined the daily distances moved and the temporal-associated activity of 1451 terrestrial mammals out of 42 species during their initial tracking period. The disturbance intensity and the speed of recovery varied across species, with herbivores, females, and individuals captured and collared in relatively secluded study areas experiencing more pronounced disturbances due to limited anthropogenic influences.
Mobile linkers are essential for maintaining biodiversity as they influence the dynamics and resilience of ecosystems. Furthermore, their ability to move through fragmented landscapes makes them a key component for restoring disturbed sites. Individual movement decisions determine the scale of mobile links, and understanding variations in space use among individuals is crucial for interpreting their functions. Climate change poses further challenges, with wildlife species expected to adjust their behavior, especially in response to high-temperature extremes, and comprehending the anthropogenic influence on animal movements will remain paramount to effective land use planning and the development of successful conservation strategies.
This thesis provides a comprehensive ecological understanding of hares in agricultural landscapes. My research findings underscore the importance of hares as mobile linkers, the influence of personality traits on behavior and spatial patterns, the vulnerability of hares to extreme weather conditions, and the immediate consequences of collar attachment on mammalian movements. Thus, I contribute valuable insights to wildlife conservation and management efforts, aiding in developing strategies to mitigate the impact of environmental changes on hare populations. Moreover, these findings enable the development of methodologies aimed at minimizing the impacts of collaring while also identifying potential biases in the data, thereby benefiting both animal welfare and the scientific integrity of localization studies.
1,7 Milliarden Studierende waren von der ad hoc Umstellung der Lehre an Hochschulen durch den Ausbruch der COVID-19-Pandemie im Jahr 2020 betroffen. Innerhalb kürzester Zeit mussten Lehr- und Lernformate digital transformiert werden, um ein Distanzlernen für Studierende überall auf der Welt zu ermöglichen. Etwa zwei Jahre später können die Erfahrungen aus der Entwicklung von digitalen Lehr- und Lernformaten dazu genutzt werden, um Blended Learning Formate zielgerecht weiterzuentwickeln. Die nachfolgende Untersuchung zeigt einerseits einen Prozess der evolutionären Entwicklung am Beispiel eines Inverted Classrooms auf. Andererseits wird das Modell des Student Engagement genutzt, um die Einflussfaktoren, im Speziellen die des Verhaltens, zielgerecht anzupassen und so die Outcomes in Form von besseren Noten und einer erhöhten Zufriedenheit bei den Studierenden zu erzielen. Grundlage für die Untersuchung bildet die Lehrveranstaltung Projektmanagement, die an einer deutschen Hochschule durchgeführt wird.

Dieser Beitrag gibt einen Einblick in die ehrenamtliche Arbeit mit Menschen mit Aphasie und deren Angehörigen. Vor sieben Jahren gründete Romy Steinberg gemeinsam mit ihrem Mann, der selbst von Aphasie betroffen ist, den Chor „AphaSingers”. Jeden Monat findet sich der Chor zu einem Workshop-Tag zusammen, der viel mehr als nur die Gesangsprobe beinhaltet. Partizipation umfasst den Austausch miteinander, schöne gemeinsame Erlebnisse und Zusammenhalt. All dies bietet dieser Chor den Mitgliedern und erntet hierfür viel Anerkennung und Dankbarkeit.
In an effort to describe and produce different formats for video instruction, the research community in technology-enhanced learning, and MOOC scholars in particular, have focused on the general style of video production: whether it is a digitally scripted “talk-and-chalk” or a “talking head” version of a learning unit. Since these production styles include various sub-elements, this paper deconstructs the inherited elements of video production in the context of educational live-streams. Using over 700 videos – both from synchronous and asynchronous modalities of large video-based platforms (YouTube and Twitch), 92 features were found in eight categories of video production. These include commonly analyzed features such as the use of green screen and a visible instructor, but also less studied features such as social media connections and changing camera perspective depending on the topic being covered. Overall, the research results enable an analysis of common video production styles and a toolbox for categorizing new formats – independent of their final (a)synchronous use in MOOCs. The MOOChub is a joined web-based catalog of all relevant German and Austrian MOOC platforms that lists well over 750 Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). Automatically building such a catalog requires that all partners describe and publicly offer the metadata of their courses in the same way. The paper at hand presents the genesis of the idea to establish a common metadata standard and the story of its subsequent development. The result of this effort is, first, an open-licensed de-facto-standard, which is based on existing commonly used standards and second, a first prototypical platform that is using this standard: the MOOChub, which lists all courses of the involved partners. This catalog is searchable and provides a more comprehensive overview of basically all MOOCs that are offered by German and Austrian MOOC platforms. Finally, the upcoming developments to further optimize the catalog and the metadata standard are reported.
In the present thesis, AC electrokinetic forces, like dielectrophoresis and AC electroosmosis, were demonstrated as a simple and fast method to functionalize the surface of nanoelectrodes with submicrometer sized biological objects. These nanoelectrodes have a cylindrical shape with a diameter of 500 nm arranged in an array of 6256 electrodes. Due to its medical relevance influenza virus as well as anti-influenza antibodies were chosen as a model organism. Common methods to bring antibodies or proteins to biosensor surfaces are complex and time-consuming. In the present work, it was demonstrated that by applying AC electric fields influenza viruses and antibodies can be immobilized onto the nanoelectrodes within seconds without any prior chemical modification of neither the surface nor the immobilized biological object. The distribution of these immobilized objects is not uniform over the entire array, it exhibits a decreasing gradient from the outer row to the inner ones. Different causes for this gradient have been discussed, such as the vortex-shaped fluid motion above the nanoelectrodes generated by, among others, electrothermal fluid flow. It was demonstrated that parts of the accumulated material are permanently immobilized to the electrodes. This is a unique characteristic of the presented system since in the literature the AC electrokinetic immobilization is almost entirely presented as a method just for temporary immobilization. The spatial distribution of the immobilized viral material or the anti-influenza antibodies at the electrodes was observed by either the combination of fluorescence microscopy and deconvolution or by super-resolution microscopy (STED). On-chip immunoassays were performed to examine the suitability of the functionalized electrodes as a potential affinity-based biosensor. Two approaches were pursued: A) the influenza virus as the bio-receptor or B) the influenza virus as the analyte. Different sources of error were eliminated by ELISA and passivation experiments. Hence, the activity of the immobilized object was inspected by incubation with the analyte. This resulted in the successful detection of anti-influenza antibodies by the immobilized viral material. On the other hand, a detection of influenza virus particles by the immobilized anti-influenza antibodies was not possible. The latter might be due to lost activity or wrong orientation of the antibodies. Thus, further examinations on the activity of by AC electric fields immobilized antibodies should follow. When combined with microfluidics and an electrical read-out system, the functionalized chips possess the potential to serve as a rapid, portable, and cost-effective point-of-care (POC) device. This device can be utilized as a basis for diverse applications in diagnosing and treating influenza, as well as various other pathogens.
Economic agents often irrationally base their decision-making on irrelevant information. This research analyzes whether men and women react to futile information about past outcomes. For this purpose, we run a laboratory experiment (Study 1) and use field data (Study 2). In both studies, the behavior of men is consistent with falsely assumed negative autocorrelation, often referred to as gambler’s fallacy Women’s behavior aligns with falsely assumed positive autocorrelation, a notion of the hot hand fallacy. On the aggregate, the two fallacies cancel out. Even when individuals are, on average, rational, the biases in the decision-making of subgroups might cause inefficient outcomes. In a mediation analysis, we find that a) the agents stated perceived probabilities of future outcomes are not blurred by irrelevant information and b) about 40 % of the observed biases are driven by differences in the perceived attractiveness of available choices caused by the irrelevant information.
Die Fachausbildung des Vorbereitungsdiensts im Land Brandenburg bietet Lehramtskandidat:innen (LAK) gemeinsame Fachgruppenarbeit, individuelle Fachkonsultationen sowie Hospitationen als unterstützende Angebote im Entwicklungsprozess. Um diesen Professionalisierungsprozess sichtbar zu machen und Zielperspektiven entwickeln und verfolgen zu können, wurden aus einem Spinnennetzdiagramm zwei Praxistools zur Reflexion und Diagnose entwickelt.
(1) Reflexionstool: Die Übertragung eines tabellarischen Kompetenzprofils (Arnold & Iffert nach MBJS [Ministerium für Bildung, Jugend und Sport des Landes Brandenburg], 2014) in das Spinnennetzdiagramm bietet den LAK niederschwellige Gelegenheit der kontinuierlichen, prozessbegleitenden Selbstreflexion. Die Selbstwahrnehmung von positiven Entwicklungen kann zur Stärkung der Selbstwirksamkeit führen, schafft gleichzeitig jedoch eine Bewusstmachung für einzelne Herausforderungen. Die Abbildung individueller Entwicklungsaufgaben und Professionalisierungsbedarfe ermöglicht eine bedarfsorientierte Gestaltung der Fachgruppenarbeit.
(2) Diagnosetool: Analog wird Fachausbilder:innen durch die Übertragung der Beobachtungskriterien des MBJS (2014) in das Diagramm eine übersichtliche Bestandsaufnahme einzelner Unterrichtssituationen zur Diagnose von Grundkoordinaten des Unterrichts transparent. Auf diese Weise können Fachausbilder:innen mögliche blinde Flecken identifizieren und Feedback zur Auswahl von Beobachtungskriterien geben. Darüber hinaus ergeben sich Aspekte zur Gestaltung von Fachkonsultationen sowie Diskussionsgrundlagen für Gruppenhospitationen.
We analyze the impact of women’s managerial representation on the gender pay gap among employees on the establishment level using German Linked-Employer-Employee-Data from the years 2004 to 2018. For identification of a causal effect we employ a panel model with establishment fixed effects and industry-specific time dummies. Our results show that a higher share of women in management significantly reduces the gender pay gap within the firm. An increase in the share of women in first-level management e.g. from zero to above 33 percent decreases the adjusted gender pay gap from a baseline of 15 percent by 1.2 percentage points, i.e. to roughly 14 percent. The effect is stronger for women in second-level than first-level management, indicating that women managers with closer interactions with their subordinates have a higher impact on the gender pay gap than women on higher management levels. The results are similar for East and West Germany, despite the lower gender pay gap and more gender egalitarian social norms in East Germany. From a policy perspective, we conclude that increasing the number of women in management positions has the potential to reduce the gender pay gap to a limited extent. However, further policy measures will be needed in order to fully close the gender gap in pay.
Establishment of final leaf size in plants represents a complex mechanism that relies on the precise regulation of two interconnected cellular processes, cell division and cell expansion. In previous work, the barley protein BROAD LEAF1 (BLF1) was identified as a novel negative regulator of cell proliferation, that mainly limits leaf growth in the width direction. Here I identified a novel RING/U-box protein that interacts with BLF1 through a yeast two hybrid screen. Using BiFC, Co-IP and FRET I confirmed the interaction of the two proteins in planta. Enrichment of the BLF1-mEGFP fusion protein and the increase of the FRET signal upon MG132 treatment of tobacco plants, together with an in vivo ubiquitylation assay in bacteria, confirmed that the RING/U-box E3 interacts with BLF1 to mediate its ubiquitylation and degradation by the 26S proteasome system. Consistent with regulation of endogenous BLF1 in barley by proteasomal degradation, inhibition of the proteasome by bortezomib treatment on BLF1-vYFP transgenic barley plants also resulted in an enrichment of the BLF1 protein. I thus demonstrated that RING/U-box E3 is colocalized with BLF1 in nuclei and negatively regulates BLF1 protein levels. Analysis of ring-e3_1 knock-out mutants suggested the involvement of the RING/U-box E3 gene in leaf growth control, although the effect was mainly on leaf length. Together, my results suggest that proteasomal degradation, possibly mediated by RING/U-box E3, contributes to fine-tuning BLF1 protein-level in barley.
Many widely used observational data sets are comprised of several overlapping instrument records. While data inter-calibration techniques often yield continuous and reliable data for trend analysis, less attention is generally paid to maintaining higher-order statistics such as variance and autocorrelation. A growing body of work uses these metrics to quantify the stability or resilience of a system under study and potentially to anticipate an approaching critical transition in the system. Exploring the degree to which changes in resilience indicators such as the variance or autocorrelation can be attributed to non-stationary characteristics of the measurement process – rather than actual changes in the dynamical properties of the system – is important in this context. In this work we use both synthetic and empirical data to explore how changes in the noise structure of a data set are propagated into the commonly used resilience metrics lag-one autocorrelation and variance. We focus on examples from remotely sensed vegetation indicators such as vegetation optical depth and the normalized difference vegetation index from different satellite sources. We find that time series resulting from mixing signals from sensors with varied uncertainties and covering overlapping time spans can lead to biases in inferred resilience changes. These biases are typically more pronounced when resilience metrics are aggregated (for example, by land-cover type or region), whereas estimates for individual time series remain reliable at reasonable sensor signal-to-noise ratios. Our work provides guidelines for the treatment and aggregation of multi-instrument data in studies of critical transitions and resilience.
The near-Earth space environment is a highly complex system comprised of several regions and particle populations hazardous to satellite operations. The trapped particles in the radiation belts and ring current can cause significant damage to satellites during space weather events, due to deep dielectric and surface charging. Closer to Earth is another important region, the ionosphere, which delays the propagation of radio signals and can adversely affect navigation and positioning. In response to fluctuations in solar and geomagnetic activity, both the inner-magnetospheric and ionospheric populations can undergo drastic and sudden changes within minutes to hours, which creates a challenge for predicting their behavior. Given the increasing reliance of our society on satellite technology, improving our understanding and modeling of these populations is a matter of paramount importance.
In recent years, numerous spacecraft have been launched to study the dynamics of particle populations in the near-Earth space, transforming it into a data-rich environment. To extract valuable insights from the abundance of available observations, it is crucial to employ advanced modeling techniques, and machine learning methods are among the most powerful approaches available. This dissertation employs long-term satellite observations to analyze the processes that drive particle dynamics, and builds interdisciplinary links between space physics and machine learning by developing new state-of-the-art models of the inner-magnetospheric and ionospheric particle dynamics.
The first aim of this thesis is to investigate the behavior of electrons in Earth's radiation belts and ring current. Using ~18 years of electron flux observations from the Global Positioning System (GPS), we developed the first machine learning model of hundreds-of-keV electron flux at Medium Earth Orbit (MEO) that is driven solely by solar wind and geomagnetic indices and does not require auxiliary flux measurements as inputs. We then proceeded to analyze the directional distributions of electrons, and for the first time, used Fourier sine series to fit electron pitch angle distributions (PADs) in Earth's inner magnetosphere. We performed a superposed epoch analysis of 129 geomagnetic storms during the Van Allen Probes era and demonstrated that electron PADs have a strong energy-dependent response to geomagnetic activity. Additionally, we showed that the solar wind dynamic pressure could be used as a good predictor of the PAD dynamics. Using the observed dependencies, we created the first PAD model with a continuous dependence on L, magnetic local time (MLT) and activity, and developed two techniques to reconstruct near-equatorial electron flux observations from low-PA data using this model.
The second objective of this thesis is to develop a novel model of the topside ionosphere. To achieve this goal, we collected observations from five of the most widely used ionospheric missions and intercalibrated these data sets. This allowed us to use these data jointly for model development, validation, and comparison with other existing empirical models. We demonstrated, for the first time, that ion density observations by Swarm Langmuir Probes exhibit overestimation (up to ~40-50%) at low and mid-latitudes on the night side, and suggested that the influence of light ions could be a potential cause of this overestimation. To develop the topside model, we used 19 years of radio occultation (RO) electron density profiles, which were fitted with a Chapman function with a linear dependence of scale height on altitude. This approximation yields 4 parameters, namely the peak density and height of the F2-layer and the slope and intercept of the linear scale height trend, which were modeled using feedforward neural networks (NNs). The model was extensively validated against both RO and in-situ observations and was found to outperform the International Reference Ionosphere (IRI) model by up to an order of magnitude. Our analysis showed that the most substantial deviations of the IRI model from the data occur at altitudes of 100-200 km above the F2-layer peak. The developed NN-based ionospheric model reproduces the effects of various physical mechanisms observed in the topside ionosphere and provides highly accurate electron density predictions.
This dissertation provides an extensive study of geospace dynamics, and the main results of this work contribute to the improvement of models of plasma populations in the near-Earth space environment.
Die Professionalisierung angehender Lehrer:innen für Fragen rund um sprachliche Bildung, Deutsch als Zweitsprache und Mehrsprachigkeit ist in den letzten Jahren verstärkt in den Blick der Praxis und Forschung der Lehrer:innenbildung gerückt. Während der Fachdiskurs im Hinblick auf die Konstrukte (Handlungs-)Kompetenz und Einstellungen bereits vorgeschritten ist, stellen die Modellierung und Erforschung des Konstrukts Reflexion im Fach Deutsch als Fremd- und Zweitsprache (DaF*Z) noch ein Desiderat dar. Im Beitrag wird die Fachspezifik der Reflexion als eines der Qualifizierungsziele der Ausbildung von Lehrer:innen für die sprachlich und kulturell heterogene Schülerschaft diskutiert und eine Modellierung vorgestellt.

A degree course in IT and business administration solely for women (FIW) has been offered since 2009 at the HTW Berlin – University of Applied Sciences. This contribution discusses student motivations for enrolling in such a women only degree course and gives details of our experience over recent years. In particular, the approach to attracting new female students is described and the composition of the intake is discussed. It is shown that the women-only setting together with other factors can attract a new clientele for computer science.
“They Took to the Sea”

The sea and maritime spaces have long been neglected in the field of Jewish studies despite their relevance in the context of Jewish religious texts and historical narratives. The images of Noah’s arche, king Salomon’s maritime activities or the miracle of the parting of the Red Sea immediately come into mind, however, only illustrate a few aspects of Jewish maritime activities. Consequently, the relations of Jews and the sea has to be seen in a much broader spatial and temporal framework in order to understand the overall importance of maritime spaces in Jewish history and culture.
Almost sixty years after Samuel Tolkowsky’s pivotal study on maritime Jewish history and culture and the publication of his book “They Took to the Sea” in 1964, this volume of PaRDeS seeks to follow these ideas, revisit Jewish history and culture from different maritime perspectives and shed new light on current research in the field, which brings together Jewish and maritime studies.
The articles in this volume therefore reflect a wide range of topics and illustrate how maritime perspectives can enrich our understanding of Jewish history and culture and its entanglement with the sea – especially in modern times. They study different spaces and examine their embedded narratives and functions. They follow in one way or another the discussions which evolved in the last decades, focused on the importance of spatial dimensions and opened up possibilities for studying the production and construction of spaces, their influences on cultural practices and ideas, as well as structures and changes of social processes. By taking these debates into account, the articles offer new insights into Jewish history and culture by taking us out to “sea” and inviting us to revisit Jewish history and culture from different maritime perspectives.
“Creating a Maritime Future”

This article explores the importance of the port city of Hamburg in the evolving discourses on the creation of a maritime future, a vision which became influential in the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s. While some Jewish representatives in the city aimed at preserving and intertwining Hanseatic and Jewish traditions in order to secure a Jewish presence in the port city under the pressure of the Nazi regime and thereafter, others wanted to create new emigration opportunities, especially to Mandatory Palestine, and create a Jewish maritime future in Eretz Israel. Different Zionist organizations supported the newly evolving maritime ideas, such as the “conquest of the sea”, and promoted the image of a Jewish seafaring nation. Despite the difficulties in the 1940s, these concepts gained influence post-1945 and led to the foundation of the fishery kibbutz “Zerubavel” in Blankenese/Hamburg. However, the idea of a Hanseatic Jewish future also remained influential and illustrates how differently a “Jewish maritime future” was imagined and used to link past, present and future.
The integration of MOOCs into the Moroccan Higher Education (MHE) took place in 2013 by developing different partnerships and projects at national and international levels. As elsewhere, the Covid-19 crisis has played an important role in accelerating distance education in MHE. However, based on our experience as both university professors and specialists in educational engineering, the effective execution of the digital transition has not yet been implemented. Thus, in this article, we present a retrospective feedback of MOOCs in Morocco, focusing on the policies taken by the government to better support the digital transition in general and MOOCs in particular. We are therefore seeking to establish an optimal scenario for the promotion of MOOCs, which emphasizes the policies to be considered, and which recalls the importance of conducting a delicate articulation taking into account four levels, namely environmental, institutional, organizational and individual. We conclude with recommendations that are inspired by the Moroccan academic contex that focus on the major role that MOOCs plays for university students and on maintaining lifelong learning.
Advancements in computer vision techniques driven by machine learning have facilitated robust and efficient estimation of attributes such as depth, optical flow, albedo, and shading. To encapsulate all such underlying properties associated with images and videos, we evolve the concept of intrinsic images towards intrinsic attributes. Further, rapid hardware growth in the form of high-quality smartphone cameras, readily available depth sensors, mobile GPUs, or dedicated neural processing units have made image and video processing pervasive. In this thesis, we explore the synergies between the above two advancements and propose novel image and video processing techniques and systems based on them. To begin with, we investigate intrinsic image decomposition approaches and analyze how they can be implemented on mobile devices. We propose an approach that considers not only diffuse reflection but also specular reflection; it allows us to decompose an image into specularity, albedo, and shading on a resource constrained system (e.g., smartphones or tablets) using the depth data provided by the built-in depth sensors. In addition, we explore how on-device depth data can further be used to add an immersive dimension to 2D photos, e.g., showcasing parallax effects via 3D photography. In this regard, we develop a novel system for interactive 3D photo generation and stylization on mobile devices. Further, we investigate how adaptive manipulation of baseline-albedo (i.e., chromaticity) can be used for efficient visual enhancement under low-lighting conditions. The proposed technique allows for interactive editing of enhancement settings while achieving improved quality and performance. We analyze the inherent optical flow and temporal noise as intrinsic properties of a video. We further propose two new techniques for applying the above intrinsic attributes for the purpose of consistent video filtering. To this end, we investigate how to remove temporal inconsistencies perceived as flickering artifacts. One of the techniques does not require costly optical flow estimation, while both provide interactive consistency control. Using intrinsic attributes for image and video processing enables new solutions for mobile devices – a pervasive visual computing device – and will facilitate novel applications for Augmented Reality (AR), 3D photography, and video stylization. The proposed low-light enhancement techniques can also improve the accuracy of high-level computer vision tasks (e.g., face detection) under low-light conditions. Finally, our approach for consistent video filtering can extend a wide range of image-based processing for videos.
Bilingualer Unterricht gilt als das Erfolgsmodell für den schulischen Fremdsprachenerwerb in Deutschland und die Beherrschung einer Fremdsprache in Wort und Schrift ist eine entscheidende berufsqualifizierende Kompetenz in unserer globalisierten Welt. Insbesondere die Verzahnung fachlicher und sprachlicher Inhalte im Kontext Bilingualen Unterrichts scheint gewinnbringend für den Fremdspracherwerb zu sein. Dabei ist die Diskrepanz zwischen den zumeist noch geringen fremdsprachlichen Fähigkeiten der Lernenden und den fachlichen Ansprüchen des Geographieunterrichts eine große Herausforderung für fachliches Lernen im bilingualen Sachfachunterricht. Es stellt sich die Frage, wie der Bilinguale Unterricht gestaltet sein muss, um einerseits geographische Themen fachlich komplex behandeln zu können und andererseits die Lernenden fremdsprachlich nicht zu überfordern.
Im Rahmen einer Design-Based-Research-Studie im bilingualen Geographieunterricht wurde untersucht, wie fachliches Lernen im bilingualen Geographieunterricht durch den Einsatz beider beteiligter Sprachen (Englisch/Deutsch) gefördert werden kann.
Auf Grundlage eines theoretisch fundierten Kenntnisstands zum Bilingualen Unterricht und zum Lernen mit Fachkonzepten im Geographieunterricht wurde eine Lernumgebung konzipiert, im Unterricht erprobt und weiterentwickelt, in der Strategien des Sprachwechsels zum Einsatz kommen.
Die Ergebnisse der Studie sind kontextbezogene Theorien einer zweisprachigen Didaktik für den bilingualen Geographieunterricht und Erkenntnisse zum Lernen mit Fachkonzepten im Geographieunterricht am Beispiel des geographischen Konzepts Wandel. Produkt der Studie ist eine unterrichtstaugliche Lernumgebung zum Thema Wandlungsprozesse an ausgewählten Orten für den bilingualen Geographieunterricht mit didaktischem Konzept, Unterrichtsmaterialien und -medien.

Die Dissertation untersucht die vielseitigen Verflechtungen und Transfers im Rahmen der deutschen Nicaraguasolidarität der späten 1970er und der 1980er Jahre. Bereits im Vorfeld ihres Machtantritts hatten die Sandinistas in beiden Lagern um ausländische staatliche und zivile Unterstützung geworben. Nun gestalteten sie mit dem sandinistischen Reformstaat zugleich ein internationales Netz an Solidaritätsbeziehungen aus, die zur Finanzierung ihrer sozialreformerischen Programme, aber auch zur Legitimation ihrer Herrschaft dienten.
Allein in der Bundesrepublik entstanden mehrere hundert Solidaritätsgruppen. In der DDR löste die politische Führung eine staatlich gelenkte Solidarisierung mit Nicaragua aus, der sich zehntausende Menschen und unabhängige Basisinitiativen anschlossen. Trotz ihrer Verwurzelung in rivalisierenden Systemen und der Heterogenität ihrer Weltbilder – von christlicher Soziallehre bis zur kritischen Linken – arbeiteten etliche Solidaritätsinitiativen in beiden Ländern am selben Zielobjekt: einem Nicaragua jenseits der Blöcke. Gemeinsam mit ihren nicaraguanischen Projektpartner_innen eröffneten sie auf transnationaler Ebene einen neuen Raum für Kommunikation und stießen dabei auf Differenzen und Auseinandersetzungen über politische Ideen, die beiderseits des Atlantiks neue Praktiken anregten.
Die Forschungsarbeit basiert auf einer umfangreichen Quellenauswertung in insgesamt 13 Archiven, darunter das Archiv der Robert-Havemann-Gesellschaft, das Archiv der BStU, verschiedene westdeutsche Bewegungsarchive und die archivalischen Nachlässe des nicaraguanischen Kulturministeriums.
Transferability of data-driven models to predict urban pluvial flood water depth in Berlin, Germany

Data-driven models have been recently suggested to surrogate computationally expensive hydrodynamic models to map flood hazards. However, most studies focused on developing models for the same area or the same precipitation event. It is thus not obvious how transferable the models are in space. This study evaluates the performance of a convolutional neural network (CNN) based on the U-Net architecture and the random forest (RF) algorithm to predict flood water depth, the models' transferability in space and performance improvement using transfer learning techniques. We used three study areas in Berlin to train, validate and test the models. The results showed that (1) the RF models outperformed the CNN models for predictions within the training domain, presumable at the cost of overfitting; (2) the CNN models had significantly higher potential than the RF models to generalize beyond the training domain; and (3) the CNN models could better benefit from transfer learning technique to boost their performance outside training domains than RF models.
Casualties and damages from urban pluvial flooding are increasing. Triggered by short, localized, and intensive rainfall events, urban pluvial floods can occur anywhere, even in areas without a history of flooding. Urban pluvial floods have relatively small temporal and spatial scales. Although cumulative losses from urban pluvial floods are comparable, most flood risk management and mitigation strategies focus on fluvial and coastal flooding. Numerical-physical-hydrodynamic models are considered the best tool to represent the complex nature of urban pluvial floods; however, they are computationally expensive and time-consuming. These sophisticated models make large-scale analysis and operational forecasting prohibitive. Therefore, it is crucial to evaluate and benchmark the performance of other alternative methods.
The findings of this cumulative thesis are represented in three research articles. The first study evaluates two topographic-based methods to map urban pluvial flooding, fill–spill–merge (FSM) and topographic wetness index (TWI), by comparing them against a sophisticated hydrodynamic model. The FSM method identifies flood-prone areas within topographic depressions while the TWI method employs maximum likelihood estimation to calibrate a TWI threshold (τ) based on inundation maps from the 2D hydrodynamic model. The results point out that the FSM method outperforms the TWI method. The study highlights then the advantage and limitations of both methods.
Data-driven models provide a promising alternative to computationally expensive hydrodynamic models. However, the literature lacks benchmarking studies to evaluate the different models' performance, advantages and limitations. Model transferability in space is a crucial problem. Most studies focus on river flooding, likely due to the relative availability of flow and rain gauge records for training and validation. Furthermore, they consider these models as black boxes. The second study uses a flood inventory for the city of Berlin and 11 predictive features which potentially indicate an increased pluvial flooding hazard to map urban pluvial flood susceptibility using a convolutional neural network (CNN), an artificial neural network (ANN) and the benchmarking machine learning models random forest (RF) and support vector machine (SVM). I investigate the influence of spatial resolution on the implemented models, the models' transferability in space and the importance of the predictive features. The results show that all models perform well and the RF models are superior to the other models within and outside the training domain. The models developed using fine spatial resolution (2 and 5 m) could better identify flood-prone areas. Finally, the results point out that aspect is the most important predictive feature for the CNN models, and altitude is for the other models.
While flood susceptibility maps identify flood-prone areas, they do not represent flood variables such as velocity and depth which are necessary for effective flood risk management. To address this, the third study investigates data-driven models' transferability to predict urban pluvial floodwater depth and the models' ability to enhance their predictions using transfer learning techniques. It compares the performance of RF (the best-performing model in the previous study) and CNN models using 12 predictive features and output from a hydrodynamic model. The findings in the third study suggest that while CNN models tend to generalise and smooth the target function on the training dataset, RF models suffer from overfitting. Hence, RF models are superior for predictions inside the training domains but fail outside them while CNN models could control the relative loss in performance outside the training domains. Finally, the CNN models benefit more from transfer learning techniques than RF models, boosting their performance outside training domains.
In conclusion, this thesis has evaluated both topographic-based methods and data-driven models to map urban pluvial flooding. However, further studies are crucial to have methods that completely overcome the limitation of 2D hydrodynamic models.
