Tacitus' Wonders

This volume approaches the broad topic of wonder in the works of Tacitus, encompassing paradox, the marvellous and the admirable. Recent scholarship on these themes in Roman literature has tended to focus on poetic genres, with comparatively little attention paid to historiography: Tacitus, whose own judgments on what is worthy of note have often differed in interesting ways from the preoccupations of his readers, is a fascinating focal point for this complementary perspective.
Scholarship on Tacitus has to date remained largely marked by a divide between the search for veracity – as validated by modern historiographical standards – and literary approaches, and as a result wonders have either been ignored as unfit for an account of history or have been deprived of their force by being interpreted as valid only within the text. While the modern ideal of historiographical objectivity tends to result in striving for consistent heuristic and methodological frameworks, works as varied as Tacitus' Histories, Annals and opera minora can hardly be prefaced with a statement of methodology broad enough to escape misrepresenting their diversity. In our age of specialization a streamlined methodological framework is a virtue, but it should not be assumed that Tacitus had similar priorities, and indeed the Histories and Annals deserve to be approached with openness towards the variety of perspectives that a tradition as rich as Latin historiographical prose can include within its scope. This collection proposes ways to reconcile the divide between history and historiography by exploring contestable moments in the text that challenge readers to judge and interpret for themselves, with individual chapters drawing on a range of interpretive approaches that mirror the wealth of authorial and reader-specific responses in play.
Lost in Germania

Tacitus’ Germania is notable for its absences: lacking a preface and programmatic statements, and being the only ethnographic monograph to have survived from Greco-Roman antiquity, readers have often leapt to fill in its perceived blanks. This chapter aims at redressing the effects of overdetermined readings by interpreting the text’s absences as significant in their own right.

Der vorliegende Band enthält sämtliche Impulsvorträge der Lateintage von 2018 bis 2020. Zum Thema „Im Schatten der Gesellschaft? Roms Umgang mit sozialen Randgruppen“ sprachen 2018 Meike Rühl und Nicola Hömke. Unter der Überschrift „Im Zentrum der Macht: Forum Romanum“ beleuchteten Jon Albers, Filippo Carlà-Uhink und Jan Reimann 2019 jenen wirkmächtigen Ort in seinen verschiedenen Facetten näher. 2020 gab Holger Sonnabend Lateinschülern einen Einblick in das Thema „Nero – Kaiser und Künstler“. Die Vorträge sind in der Reihenfolge abgedruckt, in der sie auf dem jeweiligen Lateintag gehalten wurden.
This article analyses a narrative pattern in Tacitus’ Agricola dealing with the crossing of natural boundaries. First it discusses imaginary geography and the connections between the bounds of nature and the psychology of Agricola and his soldiers. It then turns to a discus- sion of paradoxes inherent in how the bounds of nature are handled, and discusses several traditions on which Tacitus draws. In declama- tion the edges of the earth represent a mystery and a danger, while the philosophical topos of the flight of the mind, as exemplified by Lucretius’ praises of Epicurus, offers a positive scheme in which breaking the bounds of nature is a metaphor for major intellectual achievement. The implications of Agricola’s identity as a provincial Roman are discussed, along with the glimpses of an imaginary geog- raphy in which Rome is de-centred. Finally the article considers how Tacitus inverts a literary tradition of associating the periphery of the earth with death and the underworld.
A survey of the portrayal of the Germani in Latin textbooks from 1989 to 2009, tracing the resurgence of interest in the Germani in the Federal Republic of Germany after German reunification and leading up to bimillennial commemoration of the battle in the Teutoburg Forest. The central sources are textbooks for the teaching of Latin, while context is provided by academic scholarship and representations of the Germani in other cultural contexts, including film and theatre, museums and tourist attractions. The study traces a process of demythologisation and the rise of a myth of mythlessness in the handling of ancient Germanic history. Germany’s role in the European Union is considered as a developing influence on the portrayal of ancient Germania, including Germania Romana, the Roman provinces of Germania, and Germania libera, the lands outside the empire.
This article is a contribution to the history of classical education, focused on the reception of Roman texts about Germania in German schools between 1945 and 1989. The period under discussion here represents a time during which there was an aversion to handling material tainted by its appropriation under Nazi ideology, and traces the development of new approaches to its treatment.
This article is a discussion of Plin. Ep. 7.29 and Ep. 8.6, in which he presents his reaction to seeing the grave monument of Marcus Antonius Pallas, the freedman and minister of the Emperor Claudius, beside the Via Tiburtina. The monument records a senatorial vote of thanks to Pallas, and Pliny expresses intense indignation at the Senate’s subservience and at the power and influence wielded by a freedman. This article compares Pliny’s letters with Tacitus’ account of the senatorial vote of thanks to Pallas at Ann. 12.52–3 and explores the differences between the ways in which the two authors encourage readers to relate to past events. It is noted that the Pallas letters are unusual amongst Pliny’s let- ters for their treatment of material unconnected with the life and career of Pliny and his friends, and argued that in Ep. 7.29 Pliny uses language and attitudes drawn from satire to evoke the past. Ep. 8.6 is read as an idiosyncratic piece of historical enquiry, consider- ing Pliny’s use of citation and his anonymization of historical individuals. Both letters are considered in the context of the surrounding letters, and a hypothesis is offered regarding the identity of their addressee Montanus, considering evidence from Tacitus’ Histories and Annals. Discussion of Tac. Ann. 12.52–3 focusses on the use of irony. Pliny’s evocation of enargeia (‘vividness’) is compared with that of Tacitus. The article concludes with comparison of the historical accounts offered by Pliny and Tacitus through reflection on Juvenal, Satire 1.

In the literature of Graeco-Roman antiquity, speaking animals are most prominent in fables, but in fact they are a genre-crossing phenomenon. Ancient traditions of animal speech continue to have an effect on European literature up to the present day and at the same time have parallels in other early civilizations like Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia.
In the 21 contributions of this interdisciplinary conference volume, international researchers from the fields of Classical Philology, Ancient History, Egyptology, Ancient Oriental Studies, Theology and Jewish Studies explore animal speech in ancient texts from the very beginnings to late antiquity, including their reception. Contexts relating to literary, intellectual, cultural and social history are considered as well as concepts of animality and humanity, building a bridge to the more recently established Human-Animal Studies.

Successful pain treatment in arthropathic lower extremities by acupuncture in haemophilia patients

Acupuncture is successfully used in the treatment of degenerative osteoarthritis. The treatment of haemophilic arthropathies can require strong painkillers with severe side-effects. Therefore, a special yet simple acupuncture technique was evaluated in the treatment of these joint problems. Twelve patients with a factor VIII activity < 1% and at least one painful arthropathy in both lower extremities were included in this single-blinded study. The non-treated side served as a control. Treatment was assessed by a visual analogue scale (VAS) and an orthopaedic clinical examination. Only one needle was inserted at the rear fontanelle once per week and in 15 cycles. Ten of 12 patients showed an improvement of their pain perception. The average VAS could be reduced from 6.8 to 5.0. The side not receiving treatment showed a reduction from 4.1 to 4.0. No side-effects were observed. Even though interpretation of our data are limited due to the small patient numbers, significant improvement of the VAS after treatment suggests that acupuncture has a measurable positive effect in pain management for haemophilic arthropathy of the lower extremities.
In the Posthomerica references to an omnipotent fate or to the power of the gods are strikingly frequent. Modern scholarship has often treated this as Stoic. Closer reading reveals that Quintus is, on the one hand, following the Homeric concept of double motivation, according to which humans can be motivated by a deity only to an act that conforms to their character and for which they are responsible. On the other hand, Quintus gives these statements on responsibility to characters who are trying to excuse their own acts to themselves and, particularly, to others, i.e. they are motivated contextually. It would be non-Stoic to excuse oneself for a bad deed by reference to an almighty fate. It seems that Quintus, by presenting this tension, wanted the reader to reconsider and reflect on the different concepts.

Fremde Götter in Germanien?

„Begegnung mit dem Fremden“ ist das Thema einer Zusatzrunde des zweiten Brandenburger Antike-Denkwerks, das Lateinschüler ausgewählter Brandenburger Gymnasien für die Antike begeistern will und von der Robert Bosch Stiftung gefördert wird.
Der vorliegende Band enthält die Impulsvorträge des 13. Potsdamer Lateintages im Oktober und des Sonderlateintages im Dezember 2017: Prof. Dr. Anja Klöckner erörtert den Einfluss des Mithras-Kults auf die römisch-germanische Bevölkerung am Limes; PD Dr. Nicola Hömke stellt Originalbriefe römischer Soldaten vor, die vom nordenglischen Hadrianswall stammen, wo Legionäre und keltische Einheimische aufeinandertrafen. Dr. Hermann Krüssel präsentiert anhand des Poblicius-Denkmals seine Erkenntnisse zum Leben im augusteischen Köln. Außerdem sind die kreativen und fachlich fundierten Präsentationen dokumentiert, die die Schüler zusammen mit ihren studentischen Mentoren im Laufe mehrerer Monate erarbeiteten und auf einem eigenen Schülerkongress im März 2018 vorstellten.

Mit „Wissen“ kommt der zweite Durchgang des insgesamt dreijährigen Brandenburger Antike-Denkwerks zum Abschluss, das der Zusammenarbeit zwischen der Klassischen Philologie der Universität Potsdam und ausgewählten Brandenburger Gymnasien dient und von der Robert Bosch Stiftung gefördert wird.
Der vorliegende Band enthält zum einen die beiden Impulsvorträge vom Potsdamer Lateintag im Oktober 2017: Prof. Dr. Claudia Tiersch zeigt, inwiefern sich im antiken Rom Raumwissen als Raumpolitik offenbarte, und Frau PD Dr. Nicola Hömke beleuchtet den Streit um die „richtige“ Wissensvermittlung an römische Schüler in der ausgehenden Republik. Zum anderen sind die fantasievollen Ergebnisse dokumentiert, die die Schüler zusammen mit ihren studentischen Mentoren in der mehrmonatigen Projektphase zum Thema „Wissen“ erarbeiteten und auf einem eigenen Schülerkongress im März 2018 präsentierten.

Das Zweite Brandenburger Antike-Denkwerk zielt auf die Zusammenarbeit der Klassischen Philologie der Universität Potsdam mit fünf landesweit ausgewählten Schulen. 2015/6 war das Projekt dem Thema „Würde“ gewidmet. Erste Aspekte beleuchteten Prof. Dr. Claudia Tiersch und PD Dr. Stefan Büttner-von Stülpnagel auf dem Potsdamer Lateintag. Anschließend wurde das Thema von den am Projekt beteiligten Schülerinnen und Schülern unter der Leitung von Prof. Dr. Ursula Gärtner in ganz unterschiedlichen Produkten umgesetzt. Alle diese Beiträge versammelt der vorliegende Band.
