Violation of the Core Mass - Luminosity relation for AGB models wich experience the thord dredge-up

The search for alternative routes of organic thin film formation is stimulated by the outstanding properties of these films in such fields as nonlinear optics, photonic data processing and molecular electronics. The formation of highly ordered multilayer structures by thermal vacuum deposition (VD) of organic compounds is an essential step toward the application of supramolecular organic architectures in technical systems. The VD of an amphiphilic substituted 2,5- diphenylene-1,3,4-oxadiazole 1 onto silicon substrates at defined temperature was used for the formation of ultrathin films. The structural data obtained for the VD-films of oxadiazole 1 by means of X-ray reflectivity, X-ray grazing incidence diffraction and atomic force microscopy (AFM) investigations indicate the formation of well ordered oxadiazole multilayers. The structure of the VD-multilayers is compared with that of Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films and thermally treated LB-multilayers prepared from the same compound.
Three studies examined the processes of mental model generation after pre-exposure to uncontrollability and in a depressive state. The main purpose of the experiments was to test the implications of the cognitive exhaustion model applying an explicit conceptualization of social mental models and a process tracing method developed by von Hecker (1997). An experimental situation was created for observation of consecutive, rule-based construction steps as a function of input diagnosticity, and for the quality assessment of the constructed mental model. The findings showed that participants pre-exposed to uncontrollability, as well as depressed students, were able as were controls, to identify rule-relevant information needed for model construction. However, they were less able than controls to engage in more cognitively demanding and generative step of processing , i.e. in integrating the pieces of input information into a coherent mental model of sentiment relations.

We derive exact thermodynamic identities relating the average number of condensed atoms and the root-mean- square fluctuations determined in different statistical ensembles for the weakly interacting Bose gas confined in a box. This is achieved by introducing the concept of auxiliary partition functions for model Hamiltonians that do conserve the total number of particles. Exploiting such thermodynamic identities, we provide the first, completely analytical prediction of the microcanonical particle number fluctuations in the weakly interacting Bose gas. Such fluctuations, as a function of the volume V of the box are found to behave normally, in contrast wiht the anomalous scaling behaviour V3/ 4 of the fluctuations in the ideal Bose gas.
A shallow, saline lake (Rookery Lake) close to the sea and surrounded by a penguin rookery was investigated during the austral spring and summer of 1996/1997. The proximity to the sea means that the lake is likely to have been formed recently during isostatic uplift. Inputs of carbon and nutrients from the penguin rookery have rendered Rookery Lake eutrophic compared with other brackish and saline lakes in the Vestfold Hills. Chlorophyll a concentration, bacterioplankton, heterotrophic nanoflagellate and phototrophic nanoflagellate abundances were all significantly higher than in other non-enriched lakes. The high productivity created seasonal anoxia during winter and spring below ice cover. The ciliate community resembled the marine community, and was dissimilar to that seen in older saline lakes within the Vestfold Hills. Thus Rockery Lake provides valuable evidence of the impact of natural eutrophication on an Antarctic lake, as well as of the evolution of the typical microbial community which dominates the older lakes of the Vestfold Hills.

The gravitationally lensed quasar Q2237+0305 in X-rays: ROSAT/HRI detection of the "Einstein Cross"

We report the first detection of the gravitationally lensed quasar Q2237+0305 in X-rays. With a ROSAT/HRI exposure of 53 ksec taken in Nov./Dec. 1997, we found a count rate of 0.006 counts per second for the combined four images. This corresponds to an X-ray flux of 2.2*E(-13) erg/cm(2) /sec and an X-ray luminosity of 4.2*E(45) erg/sec (in the ROSAT energy window 0.1-2.4 keV). The ROSAT/HRI detector is not able to resolve spatially the four quasar images (maximum separation 1.8 arcsec). The analysis is based on about 330 source photons. The signal is consistent with no variability, but with low significance. This detection is promising in view of the upcoming X-ray missions with higher spatial/spectral resolution and/or collecting power (Chandra X-ray Observatory, XMM and ASTRO-E).
We calculated a grid of evolutionary models for white dwarfs with helium cores (He-WDs) and investigated the occurrence of hydrogen-shell flashes due to unstable hydrogen burning via CNO cycling. Our calculations show that such thermal instabilities are restricted to a certain mass range (M approx 0.21 ... 0.30 Msun), consistent with earlier studies. Models within this mass range undergo the more hydrogen shell flashes the less massive they are. This is caused by the strong dependence of the envelope mass on the white dwarf core mass. The maximum luminosities from hydrogen burning during the flashes are of the order of 105 Lsun. Because of the development of a pulse-driven convection zone whose upper boundary temporarily reaches the surface layers, the envelope's hydrogen content decreases by Delta X approx 0.06 per flash. Our study further shows that an additional high mass-loss episode during a flash-driven Roche lobe overflow to the white dwarf's companion does not affect the final cooling behaviour of the models. Independent of hydrogen shell flashes the evolution along the final white dwarf cooling branch is determined by hydrogen burning via pp-reactions down to effective temperatures as low as approx 8000 K.

Theoretical models indicate that natural populations may be structured in such a way that many individuals occur in habitats where reproduction is insufficient to balance mortality. The persistence of such 'sink' populations depends on immigration from neighboring 'source' habitats where local reproduction exceeds mortality. While source-sink dynamics has become a fundamental concept in ecological theory, there has been virtually no experimental test for the existence of sources and sinks in natural populations. This paper reports the results of a four-year study that was designed to experimentally test for source-sink population dynamics in desert annual communities. Based on evidence from a variety of desert ecosystems indicating that patchiness caused by the presence of shrubs is important in structuring desert annual communities, we distinguished between two types of habitats: areas beneath the canopy of shrubs and the open areas between the shrubs. If, as suggested in previous studies, source-sink dynamics is important in structuring such annual communities, one would expect that removal of populations from one habitat leads to extinction of some species in the other habitat. We tested this prediction using removal experiments. Specifically, we monitored density responses of annual populations inhabiting open areas to the repeated removal of conspecific populations from the shrubs and vice versa. Four years after establishment of the experiment, none of the studied 34 species responded to the removal treatments with habitat-specific extinction. Only one species exhibited a significant habitat-specific decrease in density in response to the removal of conspecific populations from the other habitat. These findings contradict our expectations and point to the importance of applying an experimental approach in studies of source-sink dynamics.

Synthesis of fluorinated poly(phenylquinoxaline-amide)s and study of thin films made therefrom

A series of five fluorinated poly(phenylquinoxaline-amide)s were synthesized by a polycondensation reaction of a diacid chloride containing the hexafluoroisopropylidene (6F) group, namely 2,2-bis(p-chlorocarbonylphenyl)- hexafluoropropane, with various aromatic diamines incorporating two phenyl-substituted quinoxaline rings. These polymers were easily soluble in polar aprotic solvents such as N-methylpyrrolione (NMP), dimethylformamide (DMF), and tetrahydrofurane (THF), and showed a high thermal stability with decomposition temperatures above 400 °C and glass transition temperatures in the range of 260-290 Tg. Polymer solutions in NMP were processed into free-standing films that showed low dielectric constant values, in the range of 3.4-3.9, and good mechanical properties, with tensile strength in the range of 40-80 MPa and elongation to break in the range of 22-55%. Very thin films, in the range of tens of nanometer, which were deposited onto silicon wafers exhibited very smooth surfaces, free of pinholes when studied by atomic force microscopy (AFM).

These polymers were easily soluble in polar aprotic solvents such as N-methylpyrrolidinone (NMP) and dimethylformamide (DMF) and showed high thermal stability with decomposition temperature being above 450°C and glass transition temperature in the range of 260- 304°C. Polymer solutions in NMP were processed into thin flexible films which exhibited very smooth surfaces, free of pinholes when studied by atomic force microscopy. The free-standing films showed a dielectric constant in the range of 3.6-3.7.
Aromatic polyamides containing silicon and phenylquinoxaline rings in the main chain have been prepared by polycondensation reaction of a silicon-containing diacid chloride, namely bis(p-chlorocarbonylphenyl) -diphenylsilane, with various aromatic diamines having preformed phenylquinoxaline units. These polymers were easily soluble in polar aprotic solvents, such as N-methylpyrrolidinone (NMP) and dimethylformamide (DMF), and in tetrahydrofurane. They showed high thermal stability with decomposition temperature being above 450°C and glass transition temperature in the range of 253-304°C. Polymer solutions in NMP were processed into thin films having the thickness of tens of nanometer to 10 mm, by spin-coating onto glass plates or silicon wafers. The films had strong adhesion to substrates and exhibited very smooth surfaces, free of pinholes, in atomic force microscopy (AFM) studies. The free-standing films had dielectric constant in the range of 3.48-3.69. Thermal treatment of the films up to 350°C rendered them completely insoluble in organic solvents, while maintaining their smoothness and strong adhesion to the silicon substrate, and with no Tg in DSC experiments. Their FTIR spectra did not show any changes compared to the untreated films, meaning that polymers maintain their structural integrity at high temperature. Ó 1999 Elsevier Science S.A. We study a model describing a rotating linear rigid molicule interacting with a Bose-Einstein condensate. A generalization of the Landau criterion is established and gives the limit for which the molecule moves translationally and rotationally into the condensate without any friction. In particular, we show that the rotational energy released by the molecule is large enough to eject one atom out of the condensate. The detection of such an atom provides a direct measurement of the low-energy cross section of the scattering with the rotating molecule. Finally, increases of inertia and of centrifugal distortion of the molecule due to the surrounding condensate are estimated and compared with the experimental data obtained for a He4 droplet.
