Many Central Stars of Planetary Nebulae are very similar to massive Wolf-Rayet stars of the carbon sequence with respect to their spectra, chemical composition and wind properties. Therefore their study opens an additional way towards the understanding of the Wolf-Rayet phenomenon. While the study of Line Profile Variation will be difficult, espescially for the very compact early types, the comparision with other hydrogen-deficient Central Stars illuminates the driving mechanism of their winds. We speculate that at least two ingredients are needed. The ionization of their atmpospheres has to be stratified to enable multi-scattering processes and the amount of carbon and oxygen has to be high (more than a few percent by mass).
A competitive immunoassay to detect a hapten using an enzyme-labelled peptide mimotope as tracer
(2002)
Mimotope peptides-peptides which mimic the binding of a hapten to its corresponding monoclonal antibody-were conjugated to peroxidase and used in competitive immunoassay. The established immunoassay was used to quantitatively determine the concentration of hapten. As model system in all the experiments described here, we used the binding of the monoclonal antibody B13-DE1 to fluorescein and the corresponding peptide mimotope.

Line driven winds from stars and accretion disks are accelerated by scattering in numerous line transitions. The wind is believed to adopt a unique critical solution, out of the infinite variety of shallow and steep solutions. We study the inherent dynamics of the transition towards the critical wind. A new runaway wind mechanism is analyzed in terms of radiative-acoustic (Abbott) waves which are responsible for shaping the wind velocity law and fixing the mass loss. Three different flow types result, depending on the location of perturbations. First, if the shallow solution is perturbed sufficiently far downstream, a single critical point forms in the flow, which is a barrier for Abbott waves, and the solution tends to the critical one. Second, if the shallow solution is perturbed upstream from this critical point, mass overloading results, and the critical point is shifted inwards. This wind exhibits a broad, stationary region of decelerating flow and its velocity law has kinks. Third, for perturbations even further upstream, the overloaded wind becomes time-dependent, and develops shocks and dense shells.
Baroreflex sensitivity (BRS) is an important parameter in the classification of patients with reduced left ventricular function. This study aimed at investigating BRS in patients with dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) and in healthy subjects (controls), as well as comparing the values of BRS parameters with parameters of heart rate variability (HRV) and blood pressure variability (BPV). ECG, continuous blood pressure and respiration curves were recorded for 30 min in 27 DCM patients and 27 control subjects. The Dual Sequence Method (DSM) includes the analysis of spontaneous fluctuations in systolic blood pressure and the corresponding beat-to-beat intervals of heart rate to estimate bradycardic, opposite tachycardic and delayed baroreflex fluctuations. The number of systolic blood pressure/beat-to- beat interval fluctuations in DCM patients was reduced in comparison with controls (DCM patients: male, 154.4+/-93.9 ms/ mmHg; female, 93.7+/-40.5 ms/mmHg; controls: male, 245.5+/-112.9 ms/mmHg; female, 150.6+/-55.8 ms/mmHg, P<0.05). The average slope in DCM patients was lower than in controls (DCM, 5.3+/-1.9 ms/mmHg; controls, 8.0+/-5.4 ms/mmHg; P<0.05). Discriminant function analysis showed that, in the synchronous range of the standard sequence method, the DCM and control groups could be discriminated to only 76% accuracy, whereas the DSM gave an improved accuracy of 84%. The combination of six parameters of HRV, BPV and DSM gives an accuracy of classification of 96%, whereas six parameters of HRV and BPV could separate the two groups to only 88% accuracy. Thus the DSM leads to an improved characterization of autonomous regulation in order to differentiate between DCM patients and healthy subjects. BRS in DCM patients is significantly reduced and apparently less effective.

Juvenile roach (Rutilus rutilus L.) fed on the cyanobacterium Aphanizomenon were able to maintain liver glycogen and muscle protein concentrations. In contrast, internal energy stores of fish fed on the cyanobacterium Microcystis were degraded. However, liver glycogen was higher than in starved fish, suggesting that roach was able to obtain some nutrients (probably carbohydrates) from the mucus cover of Microcystis. Weak assimilation of radiolabeled Microcystis by roach was detectable, and assimilation rates increased with increasing proportion of Aphanizomenon in a mixture of both cyanobacteria. We conclude that the incomplete digestion of Microcystis was the main reason for the negative growth rates of roach when fed on this cyanobacterium species.
A close comparative analysis of the attrition of inflections in historical English and Welsh reveals that Welsh had already lost its entire NP inflection when it surfaces in writing in the 7c AD, while English was still fully inflected both in the NP and VP. The comparison of the modern English and Welsh morphological categories shows that English overtook Welsh in its rate of analyticising drift. This shows first in writing during the Middle English period. Thus in English, the attrition bothfully affected the NP and the VP, while in modern Welsh the attrition of the verbal inflection in the VP is much less advanced than in English. Both languages, however, share the shift in the VP from the synthetism of verbal tense, mood (and voice) marking towards analytic aspect marking, which continues to gain in importance in both languages today. The question is raised, whether this joint development may have been due to the influence of the 'Late British' speaking shifters to Old English, to prolongued areal contactin the island of Britain ("Sprachbund") and/or to a more general drift from syntheticity to analycity in (Western) IE languages in Europe, which affects some languages more than others. The Appendix prints the earliest Old English and Old Welsh texts (dated by absolute chronology) and marks their loss of inflections, in order to highlight the advanced analycity in the Old Welsh NP as opposed to the Old English NP.
People with the genetic disorder of Williams syndrome (WS) show an anomalous cognitive profile, wherein some purely verbal and social communicative abilities are relatively proficient, while visuo-spatial skills can be extremely impaired. Face processing, while apparently relatively spared among visuo-spatial skills, can show deficits suggesting developmental immaturity. In this context, the exploration of visual and audiovisual speech perception in WS is of interest. A new test based on tokens from a single natural English speaker of the form /ba:/, /va:/, /tha:/, /da:/ and / ga:/, digitally manipulated and presented in unimodal (vision alone, audition alone) and audiovisual conditions, was presented for participants to identify each token. Compared with age-matched controls, WS participants were impaired at visual but not auditory identification, and in audiovisual testing showed correspondingly reduced effects of vision on report of auditory token identity. Audiovisual integration was nevertheless demonstrable in WS. Speech-reading may require skills which do not reach age-appropriate levels in WS, despite their age-appropriate (auditory) phonological abilities.

In order to monitor the seismic activity of Mt. Merapi (Indonesia) over a long period of time, we installed a permanent array of both broadband and short-period seismometers during the summer of 1997. Considering the requirements of an automatic classification and localization system for seismic monitoring and surveillance at active volcanoes, we split this network into three small aperture arrays distributed around the volcano. We introduce here a newly developed method to determine the hypocenters in an automatic, non-linear manner using the coherence of seismic waves observed at the different arrays. To test this method, we analyze a swarm of VT-B events recorded by the network. The first step in this algorithm is based on a modified smoothed coherence transform. In the second step we perform a semblance analysis applied to the 3D problem, evaluating the quality of the estimated relative onset-times. After more than one year of dormancy, Mt. Merapi renewed its activity at the end of June 1998. This gave us the opportunity to analyze all stages of dome growth, collapse and new intrusion of magma using the associated seismicity in a post-processing sense. This also allowed us to calibrate and test our newly developed automatic monitoring system using the more pronounced waveforms of VT-B events. By detecting and classifying different event types automatically, we are able to localize a large number of VT-B events which occurred just before the initial eruption. We are also able to resolve some properties of the wavefield at Mt Merapi which are essential for further interpretations. Finally, the results show that the source region of the VT-B type seismicity just before the 1998 eruption is closely related to the region of subsequent high volcanic activity and therefore may represent a promising tool to forecast future eruptions.
