Seit seiner berühmt-berüchtigten Friedenspreisrede von 1998 nimmt die Anzahl der literaturwissenschaftlichen und -politischen Publikationen, die Martin Walsers Werk eine nationalistische und antisemitische Tendenz unterstellen, zu. Bisweilen wird Walser unterstellt, er suche über die Ausschließung des Jüdischen das Nationale zu stärken und behaupte die Unversöhnlichkeit von Tätergemeinschaft und Opfergemeinschaft nach 1945. Das bislang in der Forschung wenig beachtete Hörspiel "Das Gespenst von Gattnau" lässt die Annahme einer anderen Tendenz zu: die Tendenz zur Versöhnung.
Dass Universitäten über Jahrhunderte hinweg Gegenstand von Literatur waren, verwundert kaum. Gehen doch Lesen und Bildung Hand in Hand. Und doch verzeichnen Literaturwissenschaftler für die Jahre zwischen 1690 und 1720 ungewöhnlich viele Romane, die sich der Beschreibung des zeitgenössischen Studentenlebens oder der Gelehrtensatire widmen. In ihrer Antrittsvorlesung am 23. Juni geht Prof. Dr. Stefanie Stockhorst der Frage nach, warum die Universität für den Roman um 1700 zu einem so wichtigen Thema wurde. Dabei entwickelt sie die These, dass sich in den viel gelesen Texten der Zeit wie dem "Academischen Roman" (1690) von Werner Happel bereits jener Bildungsoptimismus Bahn bricht, der, an der Schwelle zur Aufklärung stehend, mehr und mehr an Bedeutung gewinnt.
Brüche und Umbrüche

Einen Überblick über historische Veränderungen der Bedingungen, unter denen Frauen geschrieben haben, sollte eine Ringvorlesung vermitteln, die das Institut für Germanistik der Universität Potsdam in zwei Semestern der Jahre 2005/06 veranstaltete. Unter dem Titel »Lesen und Schreiben in Umbrüchen« macht der Lehrplan in Brandenburg und Berlin für die Sekundarstufe II mindestens zwei der drei Umbrüche von 1933, 1945 und 1989 verbindlich zum Gegenstand des Literaturunterrichts. Als Institut der einzigen lehrerbildenden Universität des Landes wollten wir nicht nur Vorschläge machen, welche Autoren sich zur Behandlung dieser Umbrüche des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts anbieten, sondern zum einen durch die Beschränkung auf weibliche Autoren in den Umbrüchen, der Veränderung gesellschaftlichen Verhältnisse, die Geschlechterverhältnisse hervorheben und über ihnen die Brüche in den Biographien nicht aussparen, zum anderen dem Blick auf die Umbrüche zwischen 1933 und 1989 durch eine Einbeziehung früherer Umbrüche historische Tiefenschärfe geben. Von der Französischen Revolution bis zur ›Wende‹ haben gesellschaftliche Umbrüche nicht nur das Leben weiblicher Autoren im Allgemeinen bestimmt, sondern auch ihr Schreiben als eine Auseinandersetzung mit ganz individuellen Brüchen.
