Informatikstudiengänge verzeichnen hohe Abbruchquoten innerhalb der ersten beiden Semester, die häufig mit Leistungsdefiziten oder Motivationsproblemen begründet werden. Eine Ursache dafür, dass trotz intensiver Bemühungen um bessere Lehre und motivationsfördernde Maßnahmen diese Situation imWesentlichen unverändert bleibt, könnte darin liegen, dass nicht die eine Maßnahme oder der eine Ansatz das Problem im Ganzen lösen kann, sondern dass eine heterogene Studierendenschaft vielmehr nach unterschiedlichen Maßnahmen verlangt. Bisher findet sich wenig Forschung zu differenzierten Studierendentypen in der Informatik. Wir stellen in dieser Arbeit einen Ansatz dafür vor, die Heterogenität der Informatikstudierenden zu ergründen, und beschreiben die Ergebnisse erster Versuche mit diesem Ansatz. Um die große Anzahl von Studierenden auf eine überschaubare Anzahl von Typen mit jeweils ähnlichen Bedürfnissen und Erwartungen zu reduzieren, wird dazu die im Produktmanagement bewährte Personas-Methode adaptiert. Im Rahmen einer Befragung von 170 Informatikstudierenden konnten hierzu bereits einige Personas mit unterschiedlichen Merkmalshäufungen ausgearbeitet werden, die eine gute Grundlage darstellen, um auf dieser Basis differenzierte Interventionen zur Förderung und Motivation der Informatikstudierenden zu entwickeln.
Evaluating the performance of self-adaptive systems is challenging due to their interactions with often highly dynamic environments. In the specific case of self-healing systems, the performance evaluations of self-healing approaches and their parameter tuning rely on the considered characteristics of failure occurrences and the resulting interactions with the self-healing actions. In this paper, we first study the state-of-the-art for evaluating the performances of self-healing systems by means of a systematic literature review. We provide a classification of different input types for such systems and analyse the limitations of each input type. A main finding is that the employed inputs are often not sophisticated regarding the considered characteristics for failure occurrences. To further study the impact of the identified limitations, we present experiments demonstrating that wrong assumptions regarding the characteristics of the failure occurrences can result in large performance prediction errors, disadvantageous design-time decisions concerning the selection of alternative self-healing approaches, and disadvantageous deployment-time decisions concerning parameter tuning. Furthermore, the experiments indicate that employing multiple alternative input characteristics can help with reducing the risk of premature disadvantageous design-time decisions.
We introduce a type and effect system, for an imperative object calculus, which infers sharing possibly introduced by the evaluation of an expression, represented as an equivalence relation among its free variables. This direct representation of sharing effects at the syntactic level allows us to express in a natural way, and to generalize, widely-used notions in literature, notably uniqueness and borrowing. Moreover, the calculus is pure in the sense that reduction is defined on language terms only, since they directly encode store. The advantage of this non-standard execution model with respect to a behaviorally equivalent standard model using a global auxiliary structure is that reachability relations among references are partly encoded by scoping. Die Lehre von wissenschaftlichem Arbeiten stellt einen zentralen Aspekt in forschungsorientierten Studiengängen wie der Informatik dar. Trotz diverser Angebote werden mittel- und langfristig Mängel in der
Arbeitsqualität von Studierenden sichtbar. Dieses Paper analysiert daher das Profil der Studierenden, deren Anwendung des wissenschaftlichen Arbeitens, und das Angebot von Proseminaren zum Thema „Einführung in das wissenschaftliche Arbeiten“ einer deutschen Universität. Die Ergebnisse mehrerer Erhebungen zeigen dabei diverse Probleme bei Studierenden auf, u. a. bei dem Prozessverständnis, dem Zeitmanagement und der Kommunikation.
We shall examine the Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK) of Computer Science (CS) teachers concerning students’ Computational Thinking (CT) problem solving skills within the context of a CS course in Dutch secondary education and thus obtain an operational definition of CT and ascertain appropriate teaching methodology. Next we shall develop an instrument to assess students’ CT and design a curriculum intervention geared toward teaching and improving students’ CT problem solving skills and competences. As a result, this research will yield an operational definition of CT, knowledge about CT PCK, a CT assessment instrument and teaching materials and accompanying teacher instructions. It shall contribute to CS teacher education, development of CT education and to education in other (STEM) subjects where CT plays a supporting role, both nationally and internationally.

Data management is a central topic in computer science as
well as in computer science education. Within the last years, this topic is
changing tremendously, as its impact on daily life becomes increasingly
visible. Nowadays, everyone not only needs to manage data of various
kinds, but also continuously generates large amounts of data. In
addition, Big Data and data analysis are intensively discussed in public
dialogue because of their influences on society. For the understanding of
such discussions and for being able to participate in them, fundamental
knowledge on data management is necessary. Especially, being aware
of the threats accompanying the ability to analyze large amounts of
data in nearly real-time becomes increasingly important. This raises the
question, which key competencies are necessary for daily dealings with
data and data management.
In this paper, we will first point out the importance of data management
and of Big Data in daily life. On this basis, we will analyze which are
the key competencies everyone needs concerning data management to
be able to handle data in a proper way in daily life. Afterwards, we will
discuss the impact of these changes in data management on computer
science education and in particular database education.

In Zusammenhang mit den Entwicklungen der vergangenen Jahre, insbesondere in den Bereichen Big Data, Datenmanagement und Maschinenlernen, hat sich der Umgang mit Daten und deren Analyse wesentlich weiterentwickelt. Mittlerweile wird die Datenwissenschaft als eigene Disziplin angesehen, die auch immer stärker durch entsprechende Studiengänge an Hochschulen repräsentiert wird. Trotz dieser zunehmenden Bedeutung ist jedoch oft unklar, welche konkreten Inhalte mit ihr in Verbindung stehen, da sie in verschiedensten Ausprägungen auftritt. In diesem Beitrag werden daher die hinter der Data Science stehenden informatischen Inhalte durch eine qualitative Analyse der Modulhandbücher etablierter Studiengänge aus diesem Bereich ermittelt und so ein Beitrag zur Charakterisierung dieser Disziplin geleistet. Am Beispiel der Entwicklung eines Data-Literacy-Kompetenzmodells, die als Ausblick skizziert wird, wird die Bedeutung dieser Charakterisierung für die weitere Forschung expliziert.
Ethical issues surrounding modern computing technologies play an increasingly important role in the public debate. Yet, ethics still either doesn’t appear at all or only to a very small extent in computer science degree programs. This paper provides an argument for the value of ethics beyond a pure responsibility perspective and describes the positive value of ethical debate for future computer scientists. It also provides a systematic analysis of the module handbooks of 67 German universities and shows that there is indeed a lack of ethics in computer science education. Finally, we present a principled design of a compulsory course for undergraduate students.

Identity management is a principle component of securing online services. In the advancement of traditional identity management patterns, the identity provider remained a Trusted Third Party (TTP). The service provider and the user need to trust a particular identity provider for correct attributes amongst other demands. This paradigm changed with the invention of blockchain-based Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI) solutions that primarily focus on the users. SSI reduces the functional scope of the identity provider to an attribute provider while enabling attribute aggregation. Besides that, the development of new protocols, disregarding established protocols and a significantly fragmented landscape of SSI solutions pose considerable challenges for an adoption by service providers. We propose an Attribute Trust-enhancing Identity Broker (ATIB) to leverage the potential of SSI for trust-enhancing attribute aggregation. Furthermore, ATIB abstracts from a dedicated SSI solution and offers standard protocols. Therefore, it facilitates the adoption by service providers. Despite the brokered integration approach, we show that ATIB provides a high security posture. Additionally, ATIB does not compromise the ten foundational SSI principles for the users.
The aim of our article is to collect and present information about contemporary programming environments that are suitable for primary education. We studied the ways they implement (or do not implement) some programming concepts, the ways programs are represented and built in order to support young and novice programmers, as well as their suitability to allow different forms of sharing the results of pupils’ work. We present not only a short description of each considered environment and the taxonomy in the form of a table, but also our understanding and opinions on how and why the environments implement the same concepts and ideas in different ways and which concepts and ideas seem to be important to the creators of such environments.
Modern data analysis tasks often involve control flow statements, such as the iterations in PageRank and K-means. To achieve scalability, developers usually implement these tasks in distributed dataflow systems, such as Spark and Flink. Designers of such systems have to choose between providing imperative or functional control flow constructs to users. Imperative constructs are easier to use, but functional constructs are easier to compile to an efficient dataflow job. We propose Mitos, a system where control flow is both easy to use and efficient. Mitos relies on an intermediate representation based on the static single assignment form. This allows us to abstract away from specific control flow constructs and treat any imperative control flow uniformly both when building the dataflow job and when coordinating the distributed execution.
Many important graph-theoretic notions can be encoded as counting graph homomorphism problems, such as partition functions in statistical physics, in particular independent sets and colourings. In this article, we study the complexity of #(p) HOMSTOH, the problem of counting graph homomorphisms from an input graph to a graph H modulo a prime number p. Dyer and Greenhill proved a dichotomy stating that the tractability of non-modular counting graph homomorphisms depends on the structure of the target graph. Many intractable cases in non-modular counting become tractable in modular counting due to the common phenomenon of cancellation. In subsequent studies on counting modulo 2, however, the influence of the structure of H on the tractability was shown to persist, which yields similar dichotomies. <br /> Our main result states that for every tree H and every prime p the problem #pHOMSTOH is either polynomial time computable or #P-p-complete. This relates to the conjecture of Faben and Jerrum stating that this dichotomy holds for every graph H when counting modulo 2. In contrast to previous results on modular counting, the tractable cases of #pHOMSTOH are essentially the same for all values of the modulo when H is a tree. To prove this result, we study the structural properties of a homomorphism. As an important interim result, our study yields a dichotomy for the problem of counting weighted independent sets in a bipartite graph modulo some prime p. These results are the first suggesting that such dichotomies hold not only for the modulo 2 case but also for the modular counting functions of all primes p.
Die vorliegende Arbeit erörtert die Frage, wie Nachwuchs für das Informatikstudium nachhaltig gesichert werden kann. Dazu werden Befragungen unter Schülerinnen und Schülern (13-16 Jahre), sowie aktuelle Informatik-Schnupperangebote für Schülerinnen und Schüler an deutschsprachigen Hochschulen vorgestellt und untersucht. Diese Gegenüberstellung zeigt deutlich, dass die Angebote nur bedingt eine breite Zielgruppe ansprechen und dass weitere Formate und Inhalte notwendig sind, um Schülerinnen und Schüler frühzeitig und in voller Breite zu erreichen und für das Informatikstudium zu begeistern. Daraus wird abgeleitet, dass Missverständnisse und Probleme mit der Informatik im Schulkontext aufgegriffen werden müssen. Das vorgestellte Programm Schulbotschafter Informatik stellt einen möglichen Weg dar, um dies zu erreichen und übliche Schnupperangebote zu ergänzen.
Durch den bundesweiten Rückgang der Schülerzahlen und einer steigenden Zahl von Bildungsangeboten geraten Universitäten und Hochschulen in den nächsten Jahren weiter in eine Wettbewerbssituation, weshalb sie effektive Marketingmaßnahmen entwickeln müssen, um Schülerinnen und Schüler möglichst frühzeitig für das jeweilige Angebot (z. B. Informatik- und informatiknahe Studiengänge) zu interessieren. Ein Medium, über das sich potenziell sehr viele Jugendliche erreichen lassen, sind dabei soziale Netzwerke. Diese Arbeit präsentiert Ergebnisse einer Studie unter Informatikstudienanfängerinnen und -anfängern zum Nutzungsverhalten sozialer Netzwerke und zieht Schlussfolgerungen zu deren Eignung als Werbe- und Informationskanal für die Zielgruppe der Informatikinteressierten.
This article is a summary of the work carried out by the Ministry of Education in Turkey, in terms of the development of a new ICT Curriculum, together with the e-Training of teachers who will play an important role in the forthcoming pilot study. Based on recent literature on the topic, the article starts by introducing the “F@tih Project”, a national project that aims to effectively integrate technology into schools. After assessing teachers’ and students’ ICT competencies, as defined internationally, the review continues with the proposed model for the e-training of teachers. Summarizing the process of development of the new ICT curriculum, researchers underline key points of the curriculum such as dimensions, levels and competencies. Then teachers’ e-training approaches, together with selected tools, are explained in line with the importance and stages of action research that will be used throughout the pilot implementation of the curriculum and e-training process.
Business processes are often specified in descriptive or normative models. Both types of models should adhere to internal and external regulations, such as company guidelines or laws. Employing compliance checking techniques, it is possible to verify process models against rules. While traditionally compliance checking focuses on well-structured processes, we address case management scenarios. In case management, knowledge workers drive multi-variant and adaptive processes. Our contribution is based on the fragment-based case management approach, which splits a process into a set of fragments. The fragments are synchronized through shared data but can, otherwise, be dynamically instantiated and executed. We formalize case models using Petri nets. We demonstrate the formalization for design-time and run-time compliance checking and present a proof-of-concept implementation. The application of the implemented compliance checking approach to a use case exemplifies its effectiveness while designing a case model. The empirical evaluation on a set of case models for measuring the performance of the approach shows that rules can often be checked in less than a second.
This paper shows that the law, in subtle ways, may set hitherto unrecognized incentives for the adoption of explainable machine learning applications. In doing so, we make two novel contributions. First, on the legal side, we show that to avoid liability, professional actors, such as doctors and managers, may soon be legally compelled to use explainable ML models. We argue that the importance of explainability reaches far beyond data protection law, and crucially influences questions of contractual and tort liability for the use of ML models. To this effect, we conduct two legal case studies, in medical and corporate merger applications of ML. As a second contribution, we discuss the (legally required) trade-off between accuracy and explainability and demonstrate the effect in a technical case study in the context of spam classification.
Ziel dieses Beitrages ist es, das didaktische Konzept Fallstudien und seine lerntheoretisch-didaktische Begründung vorzustellen. Es wird die These begründet, dass mediale Räume für die Bearbeitung von Fallstudien lernunterstützend wirken und sich in besonderer Weise für Prozesse der Lernberatung und Lernbegleitung in der Hochschule eignen. Diese These wird entlang dem lerntheoretischen Konzept der Bedeutungsräume von Studierenden in Verbindung mit den Spezifika medialer Räume entfaltet. Für den daraus entstandenen E-Learning-Ansatz Online-Fallstudien kann hier lediglich ein Ausblick gegeben werden.
This paper presents a methodological and conceptual replication of Stieglitz and Dang-Xuan’s (2013) investigation of the role of sentiment in information-sharing behavior on social media. Whereas Stieglitz and Dang-Xuan (2013) focused on Twitter communication prior to the state parliament elections in the German states Baden-Wurttemberg, Rheinland-Pfalz, and Berlin in 2011, we test their theoretical propositions in the context of the state parliament elections in Saxony-Anhalt (Germany) 2021. We confirm the positive link between sentiment in a political Twitter message and its number of retweets in a methodological replication. In a conceptual replication, where sentiment was assessed with the alternative dictionary-based tool LIWC, the sentiment was negatively associated with the retweet volume. In line with the original study, the strength of association between sentiment and retweet time lag insignificantly differs between tweets with negative sentiment and tweets with positive sentiment. We also found that the number of an author’s followers was an essential determinant of sharing behavior. However, two hypotheses supported in the original study did not hold for our sample. Precisely, the total amount of sentiments was insignificantly linked to the time lag to the first retweet. Finally, in our data, we do not observe that the association between the overall sentiment and retweet quantity is stronger for tweets with negative sentiment than for those with positive sentiment.
Author summary <br /> The use of orally inhaled drugs for treating lung diseases is appealing since they have the potential for lung selectivity, i.e. high exposure at the site of action -the lung- without excessive side effects. However, the degree of lung selectivity depends on a large number of factors, including physiochemical properties of drug molecules, patient disease state, and inhalation devices. To predict the impact of these factors on drug exposure and thereby to understand the characteristics of an optimal drug for inhalation, we develop a predictive mathematical framework (a "pharmacokinetic model"). In contrast to previous approaches, our model allows combining knowledge from different sources appropriately and its predictions were able to adequately predict different sets of clinical data. Finally, we compare the impact of different factors and find that the most important factors are the size of the inhaled particles, the affinity of the drug to the lung tissue, as well as the rate of drug dissolution in the lung. In contrast to the common belief, the solubility of a drug in the lining fluids is not found to be relevant. These findings are important to understand how inhaled drugs should be designed to achieve best treatment results in patients. <br /> The fate of orally inhaled drugs is determined by pulmonary pharmacokinetic processes such as particle deposition, pulmonary drug dissolution, and mucociliary clearance. Even though each single process has been systematically investigated, a quantitative understanding on the interaction of processes remains limited and therefore identifying optimal drug and formulation characteristics for orally inhaled drugs is still challenging. To investigate this complex interplay, the pulmonary processes can be integrated into mathematical models. However, existing modeling attempts considerably simplify these processes or are not systematically evaluated against (clinical) data. In this work, we developed a mathematical framework based on physiologically-structured population equations to integrate all relevant pulmonary processes mechanistically. A tailored numerical resolution strategy was chosen and the mechanistic model was evaluated systematically against data from different clinical studies. Without adapting the mechanistic model or estimating kinetic parameters based on individual study data, the developed model was able to predict simultaneously (i) lung retention profiles of inhaled insoluble particles, (ii) particle size-dependent pharmacokinetics of inhaled monodisperse particles, (iii) pharmacokinetic differences between inhaled fluticasone propionate and budesonide, as well as (iv) pharmacokinetic differences between healthy volunteers and asthmatic patients. Finally, to identify the most impactful optimization criteria for orally inhaled drugs, the developed mechanistic model was applied to investigate the impact of input parameters on both the pulmonary and systemic exposure. Interestingly, the solubility of the inhaled drug did not have any relevant impact on the local and systemic pharmacokinetics. Instead, the pulmonary dissolution rate, the particle size, the tissue affinity, and the systemic clearance were the most impactful potential optimization parameters. In the future, the developed prediction framework should be considered a powerful tool for identifying optimal drug and formulation characteristics.
The aim of our project design space exploration with answer set programming is to develop a general framework based on Answer Set Programming (ASP) that finds valid solutions to the system design problem and simultaneously performs Design Space Exploration (DSE) to find the most favorable alternatives. We leverage recent developments in ASP solving that allow for tight integration of background theories to create a holistic framework for effective DSE.
The Student Learning Ecology

Educational research on social media has showed that
students use it for socialisation, personal communication, and informal
learning. Recent studies have argued that students to some degree use
social media to carry out formal schoolwork. This article gives an
explorative account on how a small sample of Norwegian high school
students use social media to self-organise formal schoolwork. This
user pattern can be called a “student learning ecology”, which is a
user perspective on how participating students gain access to learning
resources.
Die Orientierung am Outcome eines Lernprozesses stellt einen wichtigen Pfeiler einer kompetenzorientierten Informatiklehre dar. Im Beitrag werden Konzeption und Erfahrungen eines Projekts zur outcome-orientierten Neuausrichtung der Informatiklehre unter Berücksichtigung der Theorie des Constructive Alignment beschrieben. Nach der theoretischen Fundierung der Kompetenzproblematik wird anhand eines Formulierungsmodells ein Prozess zur Erarbeitung beobachtbarer Lernergebnisse dargestellt. Die Diskussion der Projektziele und Erfahrungen in der Umsetzung und Evaluierung unterstreichen die Chancen und Herausforderungen für eine Steigerung der Studienqualität.
Einsatz einer mobilen Lern-App - Ein Werkzeug zur Verbesserung von klinisch-praktischem Unterricht

Der Unterricht am Krankenbett ist im Medizinstudium eine wertvolle Möglichkeit klinisch-praktische Fertigkeiten zu erlernen. Eine optimale Vorbereitung der Studierenden ist dabei Voraussetzung. Eine mobile Lern-App wurde entwickelt, die den Studierenden, neben Lernzielen, Kursinhalte und Anleitungen zu Untersuchungstechniken bietet, um die Vorbereitung auf einen klinisch-praktischen Kurs zu fördern und Kurzinformationen auch während des Kurses zur Verfügung zu stellen. 175 Studierende hatten die Möglichkeit die App parallel zu einem klinischen Untersuchungs-Kurs im Semester zu nutzen. Im Anschluss beantworteten die Studierenden einen Fragebogen zur Nützlichkeit und Vielseitigkeit der App und zur Zufriedenheit mit der App unter Verwendung eine 5-Punkt-Likert-Skala und zwei offenen Fragen. In diesem Beitrag wird das Kurskonzept zusammen mit der Lern-App, die Ergebnisse aus dem Fragebogen und unsere Schlussfolgerungen daraus vorgestellt. Studierende bewerteten die App grundsätzlich als hilfreich. Sie sollte dabei gründlich eingeführt werden. Patienten sollten über die Nutzung von Smartphones im Studentenunterricht zu Lernzwecken informiert werden.
Spotlocator is a game wherein people have to guess the spots of where photos were taken. The photos of a defined area for each game are from panoramio.com. They are published at http://spotlocator. drupalgardens.com with an ID. Everyone can guess the photo spots by sending a special tweet via Twitter that contains the hashtag #spotlocator, the guessed coordinates and the ID of the photo. An evaluation is published for all tweets. The players are informed about the distance to the real photo spots and the positions are shown on a map.
In virtual collaboration at the workplace, a growing number of teams apply supportive conversational agents (CAs). They take on different work-related tasks for teams and single users such as scheduling meetings or stimulating creativity. Previous research merely focused on these positive aspects of introducing CAs at the workplace, omitting ethical challenges faced by teams using these often artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled technologies. Thus, on the one hand, CAs can present themselves as benevolent teammates, but on the other hand, they can collect user data, reduce worker autonomy, or foster social isolation by their service. In this work, we conducted 15 expert interviews with senior researchers from the fields of ethics, collaboration, and computer science in order to derive ethical guidelines for introducing CAs in virtual team collaboration. We derived 14 guidelines and seven research questions to pave the way for future research on the dark sides of human–agent interaction in organizations.
In this article, we propose a model for an understanding process that learners can use while studying programming. We focus on the “small step” method, in which students learn only a few concepts for one program to avoid having trouble with learning programming. We also analyze the difference in the description order between several C programming textbooks on the basis of the model. We developed a tool to detect “gaps” (a lot of concepts to be learned in a program) in programming textbooks.
GraffDok is an application helping to maintain an overview over sprayed images somewhere in a city. At the time of writing it aims at vandalism rather than at beautiful photographic graffiti in an underpass. Looking at hundreds of tags and scribbles on monuments, house walls, etc. it would be interesting to not only record them in writing but even make them accessible electronically, including images.
GraffDok’s workflow is simple and only requires an EXIF-GPS-tagged photograph of a graffito. It automatically determines its location by using reverse geocoding with the given GPS-coordinates and the Gisgraphy WebService. While asking the user for some more meta data, GraffDok analyses the image in parallel with this and tries to detect fore- and background – before extracting the drawing lines and make them stand alone. The command line based tool ImageMagick is used here as well as for accessing EXIF data.
Any meta data is written to csv-files, which will stay easily accessible and can be integrated in TeX-files as well. The latter ones are converted to PDF at the end of the workflow, containing a table about all graffiti and a summary for each – including the generated characteristic graffiti pattern image.
Research publications and data nowadays should be publicly available on the internet and, theoretically, usable for everyone to develop further research, products, or services. The long-term accessibility of research data is, therefore, fundamental in the economy of the research production process. However, the availability of data is not sufficient by itself, but also their quality must be verifiable. Measures to ensure reuse and reproducibility need to include the entire research life cycle, from the experimental design to the generation of data, quality control, statistical analysis, interpretation, and validation of the results. Hence, high-quality records, particularly for providing a string of documents for the verifiable origin of data, are essential elements that can act as a certificate for potential users (customers). These records also improve the traceability and transparency of data and processes, therefore, improving the reliability of results. Standards for data acquisition, analysis, and documentation have been fostered in the last decade driven by grassroot initiatives of researchers and organizations such as the Research Data Alliance (RDA). Nevertheless, what is still largely missing in the life science academic research are agreed procedures for complex routine research workflows. Here, well-crafted documentation like standard operating procedures (SOPs) offer clear direction and instructions specifically designed to avoid deviations as an absolute necessity for reproducibility. Therefore, this paper provides a standardized workflow that explains step by step how to write an SOP to be used as a starting point for appropriate research documentation.
Zur Unterstützung von Studierenden in der Studieneingangsphase wurde an der RWTH Aachen ein neuartiger und motivierender Einstieg in den Vorkurs Informatik entwickelt und zum Wintersemester 2011/12 erprobt. Dabei wurde die grafische Programmierung mittels App Inventor eingeführt, die zur Umsetzung anwendungsbezogener Projekte genutzt wurde. In diesem Beitrag werden die Motivation für die Neugestaltung, das Konzept und die Evaluation des Testlaufs beschrieben. Diese dienen als Grundlage für eine vollständige Neukonzeption des Vorkurses für das Wintersemester 2012/2013.
Student teachers often struggle to keep track of everything that is happening in the classroom, and particularly to notice and respond when students cause disruptions. The complexity of the classroom environment is a potential contributing factor that has not been empirically tested. In this experimental study, we utilized a virtual reality (VR) classroom to examine whether classroom complexity affects the likelihood of student teachers noticing disruptions and how they react after noticing. Classroom complexity was operationalized as the number of disruptions and the existence of overlapping disruptions (multidimensionality) as well as the existence of parallel teaching tasks (simultaneity). Results showed that student teachers (n = 50) were less likely to notice the scripted disruptions, and also less likely to respond to the disruptions in a comprehensive and effortful manner when facing greater complexity. These results may have implications for both teacher training and the design of VR for training or research purpose. This study contributes to the field from two aspects: 1) it revealed how features of the classroom environment can affect student teachers' noticing of and reaction to disruptions; and 2) it extends the functionality of the VR environment-from a teacher training tool to a testbed of fundamental classroom processes that are difficult to manipulate in real-life.

Durch den Einsatz von Spielen und Spielelementen in Lernkontexten wird versucht, Lernende zur Beschäftigung mit den Lerninhalten zu motivieren. Spielerische Elemente haben allerdings nicht nur positive motivationale Effekte: Sie können sich beispielsweise negativ auf die intrinsische Motivation auswirken, und auch nicht jeder Lernende spielt gerne. Um negativen Einflüssen von Gamification entgegenzuwirken, wurde ein Toolkit für adaptierbare Lernumgebungen entwickelt. Damit erzeugte Lernumgebungen erlauben es Studierenden, den Grad der Gamification selbst zu bestimmen, indem Spielelemente an- und abgeschaltet werden. Im Rahmen einer Anfängerprogrammiervorlesung wurden Lernspielaufgaben aus den existierenden, optionalen interaktiven eTests entwickelt und Studierenden als zusätzliche Lerngelegenheit angeboten. Eine erste explorative Studie bestätigt die Vermutung, dass die Akzeptanz des adaptierbaren Lernspiels sehr hoch ist, es aber dennoch Studierende gibt, welche die Lernumgebung ohne Spielelemente durcharbeiten. Somit bietet adaptierbare Gamification verschiedenen Studierenden die Möglichkeit, sich zusätzliche motivationale Anreize durch Zuschalten von Spielelementen zu verschaffen, ohne dabei zum Spielen „genötigt“ zu werden.
As resources are valuable assets, organizations have to decide which resources to allocate to business process tasks in a way that the process is executed not only effectively but also efficiently. Traditional role-based resource allocation leads to effective process executions, since each task is performed by a resource that has the required skills and competencies to do so. However, the resulting allocations are typically not as efficient as they could be, since optimization techniques have yet to find their way in traditional business process management scenarios. On the other hand, operations research provides a rich set of analytical methods for supporting problem-specific decisions on resource allocation. This paper provides a novel framework for creating transparency on existing tasks and resources, supporting individualized allocations for each activity in a process, and the possibility to integrate problem-specific analytical methods of the operations research domain. To validate the framework, the paper reports on the design and prototypical implementation of a software architecture, which extends a traditional process engine with a dedicated resource management component. This component allows us to define specific resource allocation problems at design time, and it also facilitates optimized resource allocation at run time. The framework is evaluated using a real-world parcel delivery process. The evaluation shows that the quality of the allocation results increase significantly with a technique from operations research in contrast to the traditional applied rule-based approach.
The goal of this paper is to study the demand factors driving enrollment in massive open online courses. Using course level data from a French MOOC platform, we study the course, teacher and institution related characteristics that influence the enrollment decision of students, in a setting where enrollment is open to all students without administrative barriers. Coverage from social and traditional media done around the course is a key driver. In addition, the language of instruction and the (estimated) amount of work needed to complete the course also have a significant impact. The data also suggests that the presence of same-side externalities is limited. Finally, preferences of national and of international students tend to differ on several dimensions.
Was ist eine kreative Leistung von Studierenden? Dies ist die Ausgangsfrage, wenn Lehre kreativitätsförderlicher als bislang gestaltet werden soll. In diesem Beitrag wird ein Modell zur Förderung von Kreativität in der Hochschullehre vorgestellt und mit einem Beispiel verdeutlicht. Es wird die veränderte Konzeption der Vorlesung Informatik & Gesellschaft illustriert: Studierende hatten die Aufgabe, eine „e-Infrastruktur für die Universität NeuDoBoDu“ zu entwickeln. Hierzu werden die Ergebnisse der Evaluation und Erfahrungen erläutert.
Der Beitrag stellt das Konzept des Semantischen Positionierens als eine Möglichkeit vor, Grundformen des wissenschaftlichen Arbeitens und elementare Formen der diskursiven Auseinandersetzung zu vermitteln, ohne dass die Studierenden sich inhaltlich an der aktuellen Forschung beteiligen müssten. Die Umsetzung dieses Konzepts im Bachelorstudium der Informatik verdeutlicht, dass mit diesem Ansatz sowohl die Kompetenzen für den Übergang in den mehr forschungsgetriebenen Masterstudiengang als auch für die berufliche Wissensarbeit erworben werden können.

that do not appear to currently being taught. The paper concludes by
raising three issues relating to learning with and through ICT that need
to be addressed in school curricula and classroom teaching.
Aside from providing instructional materials to the public, developing massive open online courses (MOOCs) can benefit institutions in different ways. Some examples include providing training opportunities for their students aspiring to work in the online learning space, strengthening its brand recognition through courses appealing to enthusiasts, and enabling online linkages with other universities. One such example is the monozukuri MOOC offered by the Tokyo Institute of Technology on edX, which initially presented the Japanese philosophy of making things in the context of a mechanical engineering course. In this paper, we describe the importance of involving a course development team with a diverse background. The monozukuri MOOC and its revision enabled us to showcase an otherwise distinctively Japanese topic (philosophy) as an intersection of various topics of interest to learners with an equally diverse background. The revision resulted in discussing monozukuri in a mechanical engineering lesson and how monozukuri is actively being practiced in the Japanese workplace and academic setting while juxtaposing it to the relatively Western concept of experiential learning. Aside from presenting the course with a broader perspective, the revision had been an exercise for its team members on working in a multicultural environment within a Japanese institution, thus developing their project management and communication skills.
There is an increasing interest in fusing data from heterogeneous sources. Combining data sources increases the utility of existing datasets, generating new information and creating services of higher quality. A central issue in working with heterogeneous sources is data migration: In order to share and process data in different engines, resource intensive and complex movements and transformations between computing engines, services, and stores are necessary.
Muses is a distributed, high-performance data migration engine that is able to interconnect distributed data stores by forwarding, transforming, repartitioning, or broadcasting data among distributed engines' instances in a resource-, cost-, and performance-adaptive manner. As such, it performs seamless information sharing across all participating resources in a standard, modular manner. We show an overall improvement of 30 % for pipelining jobs across multiple engines, even when we count the overhead of Muses in the execution time. This performance gain implies that Muses can be used to optimise large pipelines that leverage multiple engines.
In this paper, we examine conditioning of the discretization of the Helmholtz problem. Although the discrete Helmholtz problem has been studied from different perspectives, to the best of our knowledge, there is no conditioning analysis for it. We aim to fill this gap in the literature. We propose a novel method in 1D to observe the near-zero eigenvalues of a symmetric indefinite matrix. Standard classification of ill-conditioning based on the matrix condition number is not true for the discrete Helmholtz problem. We relate the ill-conditioning of the discretization of the Helmholtz problem with the condition number of the matrix. We carry out analytical conditioning analysis in 1D and extend our observations to 2D with numerical observations. We examine several discretizations. We find different regions in which the condition number of the problem shows different characteristics. We also explain the general behavior of the solutions in these regions.
Zusammenfassung: Game-based Learning und Edutainment sind aktuelle Schlagworte im Bereich der Hochschulausbildung. Zunächst verbindet man damit die Integration einer Spiel- und Spaßkultur in die herkömmlichen Lehrveranstaltungen wie Vorlesungen, Übungen, Praktika und Seminare. Die nachfolgenden Ausführungen gehen einer genaueren Begriffsanalyse nach und untersuchen, ob Game-based Learning und Edutainment tatsächlich neuartige Unterrichtsformen erfordern oder neue didaktische Überlegungen in bestehendes Unterrichtsgeschehen bringen – oder ob es nicht doch an einigen Stellen „alter Wein in neuen Schläuchen“ ist.

In vielen Bildungsbereichen verschieben sich gegenwärtig die Akzente von einer qualifikationsorientierten zu einer stärker kompetenzorientierten Ausbildung. Der Begriff der Kompetenz zielt dabei darauf ab, das Aneignen von Wissen auf Vorrat zugunsten des Erwerbs allgemeiner Kompetenzen beispielsweise zur eigenständigen Aneignung von Wissen zu verschieben. Schlüsselqualifikationen geraten dabei zunehmend auch für die Ausbildung von Ingenieuren und Informatikern ins Blickfeld. Der kooperative und erwägende Umgang mit Wissensvielfalt wird in einer Informationsgesellschaft mit ihrer schnellen und verteilten Aufbereitung von Wissen zur Herausforderung. Der Beitrag skizziert die damit verbundenen Anforderungen und stellt mit dem Konzept des Medi@Thing einen Ansatz vor, der die Umsetzung solcher Anforderungen im Rahmen der universitären Informatikausbildung ermöglicht. Ein zentrales Moment dieses Ansatzes ist die ko-aktive Wissensarbeit in virtuellen Räumen. Erste Erfahrungen zeigen, dass das Konzept von Studierenden angenommen wird. Es wird jedoch auch deutlich, dass für das Gelingen bestimmte organisatorische und technische Randbedingungen zu beachten sind.
There are a plethora of ways to guide and support people to learn about MOOC (massive open online course) development, from their first interest, sourcing supportive resources, methods and tools to better aid their understanding of the concepts and pedagogical approaches of MOOC design, to becoming a MOOC developer. This contribution highlights tools and methods that are openly available and re-usable under Creative Commons licenses. Our collection builds upon the experiences from three MOOC development and hosting teams with joint experiences of several hundred MOOCs (University of Applied Sciences in Lübeck, Graz University of Technology, University of Glasgow) in three European countries, which are Germany, Austria and the UK. The contribution recommends and shares experiences with short articles and poster for first information sharing a Monster MOOC assignment for beginners, a MOOC canvas for first sketches, the MOOC design kit for details of instructional design and a MOOC for MOOC makers and a MOOC map as introduction into a certain MOOC platform.
In der dualen IT-Ausbildung als Verbindung von beruflicher und akademischer Qualifikation werden die berufstypischen Werkzeuge, wie z. B. Laptops, ebenso in den Lehr-Lern-Prozessen der akademischen Unterrichtseinheiten eingesetzt. Im Prüfungswesen wird oft auf klassische Papierklausuren zurückgegriffen. Unterrichtseinheiten mit hohem Blended-Learning-Anteil ohne E-Prüfung werden dabei als „nicht konsistent“ wahrgenommen. In diesem Artikel wird eine empirische Studie dargelegt, die untersucht, welche Einflüsse aus der persönlichen Lernbiografie bei den Lehrenden in einer dualen IT-Ausbildung dazu führen können, die Möglichkeiten eines E-Assessments als summative Modulprüfung anzunehmen oder abzulehnen. Beispielhaft wurden in der dargelegten Studie Interviews mit Dozenten geführt und diese hinsichtlich der Verbindung zwischen Lernbiografie, Gestaltung der Didaktik der Lehr-Lern-Prozesse, Zufriedenheit und Veränderungsbereitschaft untersucht.
Clustering in education is important in identifying groups of objects in order to find linked patterns of correlations in educational datasets. As such, MOOCs provide a rich source of educational datasets which enable a wide selection of options to carry out clustering and an opportunity for cohort analyses. In this experience paper, five research studies on clustering in MOOCs are reviewed, drawing out several reasonings, methods, and students’ clusters that reflect certain kinds of learning behaviours. The collection of the varied clusters shows that each study identifies and defines clusters according to distinctive engagement patterns. Implications and a summary are provided at the end of the paper.
In this paper, we show how the theory of NP completeness can be introduced to students in secondary schools. The motivation of this research is that although there are difficult issues that require technical backgrounds, students are already familiar with demanding computational problems through games such as Sudoku or Tetris. Our intention is to bring together important concepts in the theory of NP completeness in such a way that students in secondary schools can easily understand them. This is part of our ongoing research about how to teach fundamental issues in Computer Science in secondary schools. We discuss what needs to be taught in which sequence in order to introduce ideas behind NP completeness to students without technical backgrounds.

Location analyses are among the most common tasks while working with spatial data and geographic information systems. Automating the most frequently used procedures is therefore an important aspect of improving their usability. In this context, this project aims to design and implement a workflow, providing some basic tools for a location analysis. For the implementation with jABC, the workflow was applied to the problem of finding a suitable location for placing an artificial reef. For this analysis three parameters (bathymetry, slope and grain size of the ground material) were taken into account, processed, and visualized with the The Generic Mapping Tools (GMT), which were integrated into the workflow as jETI-SIBs. The implemented workflow thereby showed that the approach to combine jABC with GMT resulted in an user-centric yet user-friendly tool with high-quality cartographic outputs.
In der letzten Jahren ist die Zahl der erfolgreichen Prüfungen von Studierenden im Informatikkurs des ersten Studienjahres für verschiedene Studiengänge an der Universität Óbuda stark gesunken. Dies betrifft Prüfungen in den Teilgebieten Rechnerarchitektur, Betrieb von Peripheriegeräten, Binäre Codierung und logische Operationen, Computerviren, Computernetze und das Internet, Steganographie und Kryptographie, Betriebsysteme. Mehr als der Hälfte der Studenten konnte die Prüfungen der ersten Semester nicht erfolgreich absolvieren. Die hier vorgelegte Analyse der Studienleistungen zielt darauf ab, Gründe für diese Entwicklung zu identifizieren, die Zahl der Abbrecher zu reduzieren und die Leistungen der Studenten zu verbessern. Die Analyse zeigt, dass die Studenten die erforderlichen Lehrmaterialen erst ein bis zwei Tage vor oder sogar erst am Tag der Klausuren vom Server downloaden, so dass sie nicht mehr hinreichend Zeit zum Lernen haben. Diese Tendenz zeigt sich bei allen Teilgebieten des Studiengangs. Ein Mangel an kontinuierlicher Mitarbeit scheint einer der Gründe für ein frühes Scheitern zu sein. Ferner zeigt sich die Notwendigkeit, dass bei den Lehrangeboten in Informatik auf eine kontinuierliche Kommunikation mit den Studierenden und Rückmeldung zu aktuellen Unterrichtsinhalten zu achten ist. Dies kann durch motivierende Maßnahmen zur Teilnahme an den Übungen oder durch kleine wöchentliche schriftliche Tests geschehen.
Cyber warfare is a timely and relevant issue and one of the most controversial in international humanitarian law (IHL). The aim of IHL is to set rules and limits in terms of means and methods of warfare. In this context, a key question arises: Has digital warfare rules or limits, and if so, how are these applicable? Traditional principles, developed over a long period, are facing a new dimension of challenges due to the rise of cyber warfare. This paper argues that to overcome this new issue, it is critical that new humanity-oriented approaches is developed with regard to cyber warfare. The challenge is to establish a legal regime for cyber-attacks, successfully addressing human rights norms and standards. While clarifying this from a legal perspective, the authors can redesign the sensitive equilibrium between humanity and military necessity, weighing the humanitarian aims of IHL and the protection of civilians-in combination with international human rights law and other relevant legal regimes-in a different manner than before.
Der vorliegende Beitrag beschäftigt sich mit der Frage, wie der eLearning-Support in großen Institutionen effizient gestaltet werden kann. Vorgestellt wird ein experimentelles Beratungsprojekt, das Lehrende bei der Gestaltung von eLearning-Maßnahmen mithilfe der Lernplattform ILIAS1 unterstützt. Neben der Zielsetzung des Projekts werden dessen Aufbau und erste Praxiserfahrungen erörtert. Außerdem werden Potenziale des Beratungsformats, die insbesondere mit der individuellen Vor-Ort-Beratung der Lehrenden durch hochschuldidaktisch geschulte Studierende einhergehen, erläutert. Abschließend werden Grenzen und Weiterentwicklungsperspektiven des Projekts dargestellt. Am Beispiel der ILIAS-Beratung soll gezeigt werden, dass es sich einer nachhaltigen Organisationsentwicklung als zuträglich erweist, Kooperationen erschiedenartiger Organisationseinheiten zu fördern und die entstehenden Synergieeffekte zu nutzen.
Ein konstruktivistischer Lehransatz für die Einführungsveranstaltung der Theoretischen Informatik

Ausgehend von einem sozial-konstruktivistischen Verständnis von Lernprozessen und unter der besonderen Berücksichtigung der durch die Bologna-Studienreform angeregten Kompetenzorientierung, haben wir in den letzten Jahren einen hochschuldidaktischen Ansatz für die Einführungsveranstaltung im Bereich der Theoretischen Informatik an der Universität Potsdam entwickelt und praktisch erprobt. Nach zahlreichen Experimenten und mit einer Durchfallquote von zuletzt 6% im Wintersemester 2011/2012 haben wir den Eindruck, dass der Ansatz den Studierenden jene Lernumgebung und -anregung bietet, die ihnen hilft, die entsprechenden Fachkompetenzen in der Veranstaltung zu entwickeln. In diesem Artikel stellen wir unseren Ansatz vor und skizzieren abschlieÿend, wie wir diesen im nächsten Wintersemester empirisch evaluieren werden.
The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the pace of digital transformation, which has forced people to quickly adapt to working and collaborating online. Learning in digital environments has without a doubt gained increased significance during this rather unique time and, therefore, Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) have more potential to attract a wider target audience. This has also brought about more possibilities for global collaboration among learners as learning is not limited to physical spaces. Despite the wide interest in MOOCs, there is a need for further research on the global collaboration potential they offer. The aim of this paper is to adopt an action research approach to study how a hybrid MOOC design enables learners’ global collaboration. During the years 2019–2020 together with an international consortium called Corship (Corporate Edupreneurship) we jointly designed, created and implemented a hybrid model MOOC, called the “Co-innovation Journey for Startups and Corporates”. It was targeted towards startup entrepreneurs, corporate representatives and higher education students and it was funded by the EU. The MOOC started with 2,438 enrolled learners and the completion rate for the first four weeks was 29.7%. Out of these 208 learners enrolled for the last two weeks, which in turn had a completion rate of 58%. These figures were clearly above the general average for MOOCs. According to our findings, we argue that a hybrid MOOC design may foster global collaboration within a learning community even beyond the course boundaries. The course included four weeks of independent learning, an xMOOC part, and two weeks of collaborative learning, a cMOOC part. The xMOOC part supported learners in creating a shared knowledge base, which enhanced the collaborative learning when entering the cMOOC part of the course.
Indexes are essential for the efficient processing of database workloads. Proposed solutions for the relevant and challenging index selection problem range from metadata-based simple heuristics, over sophisticated multi-step algorithms, to approaches that yield optimal results. The main challenges are (i) to accurately determine the effect of an index on the workload cost while considering the interaction of indexes and (ii) a large number of possible combinations resulting from workloads containing many queries and massive schemata with possibly thousands of attributes. <br /> In this work, we describe and analyze eight index selection algorithms that are based on different concepts and compare them along different dimensions, such as solution quality, runtime, multi-column support, solution granularity, and complexity. In particular, we analyze the solutions of the algorithms for the challenging analytical Join Order, TPC-H, and TPC-DS benchmarks. Afterward, we assess strengths and weaknesses, infer insights for index selection in general and each approach individually, before we give recommendations on when to use which approach.
Challenges for self-driving database systems, which tune their physical design and configuration autonomously, are manifold: Such systems have to anticipate future workloads, find robust configurations efficiently, and incorporate knowledge gained by previous actions into later decisions. We present a component-based framework for self-driving database systems that enables database integration and development of self-managing functionality with low overhead by relying on separation of concerns. By keeping the components of the framework reusable and exchangeable, experiments are simplified, which promotes further research in that area. Moreover, to optimize multiple mutually dependent features, e.g., index selection and compression configurations, we propose a linear programming (LP) based algorithm to derive an efficient tuning order automatically. Afterwards, we demonstrate the applicability and scalability of our approach with reproducible examples.
Data errors represent a major issue in most application workflows. Before any important task can take place, a certain data quality has to be guaranteed by eliminating a number of different errors that may appear in data. Typically, most of these errors are fixed with data preparation methods, such as whitespace removal. However, the particular error of duplicate records, where multiple records refer to the same entity, is usually eliminated independently with specialized techniques. Our work is the first to bring these two areas together by applying data preparation operations under a systematic approach prior to performing duplicate detection. <br /> Our process workflow can be summarized as follows: It begins with the user providing as input a sample of the gold standard, the actual dataset, and optionally some constraints to domain-specific data preparations, such as address normalization. The preparation selection operates in two consecutive phases. First, to vastly reduce the search space of ineffective data preparations, decisions are made based on the improvement or worsening of pair similarities. Second, using the remaining data preparations an iterative leave-one-out classification process removes preparations one by one and determines the redundant preparations based on the achieved area under the precision-recall curve (AUC-PR). Using this workflow, we manage to improve the results of duplicate detection up to 19% in AUC-PR.
Effective query optimization is a core feature of any database management system. While most query optimization techniques make use of simple metadata, such as cardinalities and other basic statistics, other optimization techniques are based on more advanced metadata including data dependencies, such as functional, uniqueness, order, or inclusion dependencies. This survey provides an overview, intuitive descriptions, and classifications of query optimization and execution strategies that are enabled by data dependencies. We consider the most popular types of data dependencies and focus on optimization strategies that target the optimization of relational database queries. The survey supports database vendors to identify optimization opportunities as well as DBMS researchers to find related work and open research questions.
Active use of social networking sites (SNSs) has long been assumed to benefit users' well-being. However, this established hypothesis is increasingly being challenged, with scholars criticizing its lack of empirical support and the imprecise conceptualization of active use. Nevertheless, with considerable heterogeneity among existing studies on the hypothesis and causal evidence still limited, a final verdict on its robustness is still pending. To contribute to this ongoing debate, we conducted a week-long randomized control trial with N = 381 adult Instagram users recruited via Prolific. Specifically, we tested how active SNS use, operationalized as picture postings on Instagram, affects different dimensions of well-being. The results depicted a positive effect on users' positive affect but null findings for other well-being outcomes. The findings broadly align with the recent criticism against the active use hypothesis and support the call for a more nuanced view on the impact of SNSs. <br /> Lay Summary Active use of social networking sites (SNSs) has long been assumed to benefit users' well-being. Specifically, we tested how posting pictures on Instagram affects different aspects of well-being. The results of this study depicted a positive effect of posting Instagram pictures on users' experienced positive emotions but no effects on other aspects of well-being. The findings broadly align with the recent criticism against the active use hypothesis and support the call for a more nuanced view on the impact of SNSs on users.
Image feature detection is a key task in computer vision. Scale Invariant Feature Transform (SIFT) is a prevalent and well known algorithm for robust feature detection. However, it is computationally demanding and software implementations are not applicable for real-time performance. In this paper, a versatile and pipelined hardware implementation is proposed, that is capable of computing keypoints and rotation invariant descriptors on-chip. All computations are performed in single precision floating-point format which makes it possible to implement the original algorithm with little alteration. Various rotation resolutions and filter kernel sizes are supported for images of any resolution up to ultra-high definition. For full high definition images, 84 fps can be processed. Ultra high definition images can be processed at 21 fps.
Aus einer Vergleichsstudie mit starken und schwachen Problemlösern konnten Erkenntnisse über die effizienten Herangehensweisen von Hochleistern an Informatikprobleme gewonnen werden. Diese Erkenntnisse wurden in einem Lehrvideo zum informatischen Problemlösen didaktisch aufgearbeitet, sodass Lernenden der Einsatz von Baumstrukturen und Rekursion im konkreten Kontext gezeigt werden kann. Nun wurde die tatsächliche Lernwirksamkeit des Videos sowie die Definition der Zielgruppe in einer Vergleichsstudie mit 66 Studienanfängern überprüft.
Informatischen Hochleistern über die Schulter geschaut : was können schwache Problemlöser lernen

Leistungsstarke Problemlöser zeigen ein deutlich anderes Vorgehen beim Bearbeiten von typischen Informatikproblemen als schwächere Problemlöser, das hat eine Studie mit Hochleistern und einer Vergleichsgruppe mit Informatikstudierenden ergeben. Auffällig war das Fehlen informatikspezifischer Herangehensweisen bei der Problembearbeitung durch die Vergleichsgruppe, obwohl ihnen die dazu notwendigen Werkzeuge wie etwa Baumstrukturen oder Rekursion durchaus bekannt waren. Die Frage, wie nun die deutlich effizienteren Strategien der Hochleister didaktisch aufgearbeitet werden können, um sie an schwache Problemlöser zu vermitteln, wird im vorliegen Beitrag anhand der Konzeption eines Lehrvideos diskutiert.
Der folgende Artikel beschreibt die Evaluation eines Lehrvideos zum informatischen Problemlösen, welches auf der Grundlage einer Vergleichsstudie mit starken und schwachen Problemlösern entwickelt wurde. Beispielhaft wird in dem Film ein Färbeproblem durch einen fiktiven Hochleister unter lautem Denken gelöst, die einzelnen Arbeitsschritte werden abschnittsweise kommentiert und erklärt. Ob dieses Lernkonzept von Studenten akzeptiert wird und sich durch Anschauen des Videos tatsächlich ein Lerneffekt einstellt, wurde durch eine Befragung und eine erste Vergleichsstudie untersucht.
A workflow for visualizing server connections using the Google Maps API was built in the jABC. It makes use of three basic services: An XML-based IP address geolocation web service, a command line tool and the Static Maps API. The result of the workflow is an URL leading to an image file of a map, showing server connections between a client and a target host.
Recombination of free charge is a key process limiting the performance of solar cells. For low mobility materials, such as organic semiconductors, the kinetics of non-geminate recombination (NGR) is strongly linked to the motion of charges. As these materials possess significant disorder, thermalization of photogenerated carriers in the inhomogeneously broadened density of state distribution is an unavoidable process. Despite its general importance, knowledge about the kinetics of NGR in complete organic solar cells is rather limited. We employ time delayed collection field (TDCF) experiments to study the recombination of photogenerated charge in the high-performance polymer:fullerene blend PCDTBT:PCBM. NGR in the bulk of this amorphous blend is shown to be highly dispersive, with a continuous reduction of the recombination coefficient throughout the entire time scale, until all charge carriers have either been extracted or recombined. Rapid, contact-mediated recombination is identified as an additional loss channel, which, if not properly taken into account, would erroneously suggest a pronounced field dependence of charge generation. These findings are in stark contrast to the results of TDCF experiments on photovoltaic devices made from ordered blends, such as P3HT:PCBM, where non-dispersive recombination was proven to dominate the charge carrier dynamics under application relevant conditions.
Um in der digitalisierten Wirtschaft mitzuspielen, müssen Unternehmen, Markt und insbesondere Kunden detailliert verstanden werden. Neben den „Big Playern“ aus dem Silicon Valley sieht der deutsche Mittelstand, der zu großen Teilen noch auf gewachsenen IT-Infrastrukturen und Prozessen agiert, oft alt aus. Um in den nächsten Jahren nicht gänzlich abgehängt zu werden, ist ein Umbruch notwendig. Sowohl Leistungserstellungsprozesse als auch Leistungsangebot müssen transparent und datenbasiert ausgerichtet werden. Nur so können Geschäftsvorfälle, das Marktgeschehen sowie Handeln der Akteure integrativ bewertet und fundierte Entscheidungen getroffen werden. In diesem Beitrag wird das Konzept der Data-Driven Organization vorgestellt und aufgezeigt, wie Unternehmen den eigenen Analyticsreifegrad ermitteln und in einem iterativen Transformationsprozess steigern können.
According to the personalization principle, addressing learners by means of a personalized compared to a nonpersonalized message can foster learning. Interestingly, though, a recent study found that the personalization principle can invert for aversive contents. The present study investigated whether the negative effect of a personalized message for an aversive content can be compensated when learners are in a happy mood. It was hypothesized that the negative effect of a personalized compared to a nonpersonalized message would only be observable for participants in a sad mood, while for participants in a happy mood a personalized message should be beneficial. A 2 x 2 between-subject design with mood (happy vs. sad) and personalization (personalized vs. nonpersonalized message) was used (N = 125 University students). Mood was experimentally varied prior to learning. Learning outcomes were measured by a retention and a transfer test. Results were essentially in line with the assumption: For participants in the sad mood condition, a negative effect of a personalized message was observable for retention and transfer. For participants in the happy mood condition, a positive effect of personalized message was observable for retention, but no effect for transfer. Note that the manipulation check measure for the mood induction procedure did not detect differences between conditions; this may be due to a shortcoming of the used measure (as indicated by an additional evaluation study). The study emphasizes the importance to consider the inherent emotional content of a topic, such as its aversive nature, since the emotional content of a topic can be a boundary condition for design principles in multimedia learning. The study also highlights the complex interplay of externally induced and inherently arising emotions.

First come, first served: Critical choices between alternative actions are often made based on events external to an organization, and reacting promptly to their occurrence can be a major advantage over the competition. In Business Process Management (BPM), such deferred choices can be expressed in process models, and they are an important aspect of process engines. Blockchain-based process execution approaches are no exception to this, but are severely limited by the inherent properties of the platform: The isolated environment prevents direct access to external entities and data, and the non-continual runtime based entirely on atomic transactions impedes the monitoring and detection of events. In this paper we provide an in-depth examination of the semantics of deferred choice, and transfer them to environments such as the blockchain. We introduce and compare several oracle architectures able to satisfy certain requirements, and show that they can be implemented using state-of-the-art blockchain technology.
Solving problems combining task and motion planning requires searching across a symbolic search space and a geometric search space. Because of the semantic gap between symbolic and geometric representations, symbolic sequences of actions are not guaranteed to be geometrically feasible. This compels us to search in the combined search space, in which frequent backtracks between symbolic and geometric levels make the search inefficient.We address this problem by guiding symbolic search with rich information extracted from the geometric level through culprit detection mechanisms.
Recently, initial conflicts were introduced in the framework of M-adhesive categories as an important optimization of critical pairs. In particular, they represent a proper subset such that each conflict is represented in a minimal context by a unique initial one. The theory of critical pairs has been extended in the framework of M-adhesive categories to rules with nested application conditions (ACs), restricting the applicability of a rule and generalizing the well-known negative application conditions. A notion of initial conflicts for rules with ACs does not exist yet.
In this paper, on the one hand, we extend the theory of initial conflicts in the framework of M-adhesive categories to transformation rules with ACs. They represent a proper subset again of critical pairs for rules with ACs, and represent each conflict in a minimal context uniquely. They are moreover symbolic because we can show that in general no finite and complete set of conflicts for rules with ACs exists. On the other hand, we show that critical pairs are minimally M-complete, whereas initial conflicts are minimally complete. Finally, we introduce important special cases of rules with ACs for which we can obtain finite, minimally (M-)complete sets of conflicts.
This special issue contains extended versions of four selected papers from the 11th International Conference on Graph Transformation (ICGT 2018). The articles cover a tool for computing core graphs via SAT/SMT solvers (graph language definition), graph transformation through graph surfing in reaction systems (a new graph transformation formalism), the essence and initiality of conflicts in M-adhesive transformation systems, and a calculus of concurrent graph-rewriting processes (theory on conflicts and parallel independence).
A major part of the scientific experiments that are carried out today requires thorough computational support. While database and algorithm providers face the problem of bundling resources to create and sustain powerful computation nodes, the users have to deal with combining sets of (remote) services into specific data analysis and transformation processes. Today’s attention to “big data” amplifies the issues of size, heterogeneity, and process-level diversity/integration. In the last decade, especially workflow-based approaches to deal with these processes have enjoyed great popularity. This book concerns a particularly agile and model-driven approach to manage scientific workflows that is based on the XMDD paradigm. In this chapter we explain the scope and purpose of the book, briefly describe the concepts and technologies of the XMDD paradigm, explain the principal differences to related approaches, and outline the structure of the book.
We summarize here the main characteristics and features of the jABC framework, used in the case studies as a graphical tool for modeling scientific processes and workflows. As a comprehensive environment for service-oriented modeling and design according to the XMDD (eXtreme Model-Driven Design) paradigm, the jABC offers much more than the pure modeling capability. Associated technologies and plugins provide in fact means for a rich variety of supporting functionality, such as remote service integration, taxonomical service classification, model execution, model verification, model synthesis, and model compilation. We describe here in short both the essential jABC features and the service integration philosophy followed in the environment. In our work over the last years we have seen that this kind of service definition and provisioning platform has the potential to become a core technology in interdisciplinary service orchestration and technology transfer: Domain experts, like scientists not specially trained in computer science, directly define complex service orchestrations as process models and use efficient and complex domain-specific tools in a simple and intuitive way.
The Course's SIB Libraries

It describes the different SIB libraries that we made available for the course “Process modeling in the natural sciences” to provide the functionality that was required for the envisaged applications. The students used these SIB libraries to realize their projects.

This chapter summarizes the experience and the lessons we learned concerning the application of the jABC as a framework for design and execution of scientific workflows. It reports experiences from the domain modeling (especially service integration) and workflow design phases and evaluates the resulting models statistically with respect to the SIB library and hierarchy levels.
In this paper, we take a closer look at the development of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC) in Norway. We want to contribute to nuancing the image of a sound and sustainable policy for flexible and lifelong learning at national and institutional levels and point to some critical areas of improvement in higher education institutions (HEI). 10 semistructured qualitative interviews were carried out in the autumn 2020 at ten different HE institutions across Norway. The informants were strategically selected among employees involved in MOOC-technology, MOOCproduction and MOOC-support over a period of time stretching from 2010–2020. A main finding is that academics engaged in MOOCs find that their entrepreneurial ideas and results, to a large extent, are overlooked at higher institutional levels, and that progress is frustratingly slow. So far, there seems to be little common understanding of the MOOC-concept and the disruptive and transformative effect that MOOC-technology may have at HEIs. At national levels, digital strategies, funding and digital infrastructure are mainly provided in governmental silos. We suggest that governmental bodies and institutional stake holders pay more attention to entrepreneurial MOOC-initiatives to develop sustainability in flexible and lifelong learning in HEIs. This involves connecting the generous funding of digital projects to the provision of a national portal and platform for Open Access to education. To facilitate sustainable lifelong learning in and across HEIs, more quality control to enhance the legitimacy of MOOC certificates and micro-credentials is also a necessary measure.

In der universitären Lehre ändert sich der Leitgedanke von einer qualifikationsorientierten hin zu einer kompetenzorientierten Ausbildung. Der Begriff Kompetenz lässt sich dabei grob in die fachlichen und die überfachlichen Kompetenzen unterteilen. Insbesondere die Vermittlung von Schlüsselqualifikationen hat in der Lehre von naturwissenschaftlichen Fachrichtungen nur unzureichend Einzug erhalten. Während der klassische Vorlesungsbetrieb auf den Erwerb von Fachkompetenz zielt, stoßen ausschließlich projektorientierte Veranstaltungen schnell an ihre Grenzen hinsichtlich der Teilnehmergröße oder Umfang der Lerninhalte. Um auf geeignete Art und Weise den Erwerb von überfachlichen Kompetenzen zu ermöglichen, bedarf es neuer didaktischer Konzepte, die eine engere Verknüpfung von klassischen Vorlesungen und dem projektorientierten Lernen vorsehen. In diesem Sinne versucht der skizzierte Ansatz der koordinierten Projektvorlesung(KoProV) Wissensvermittlung im Rahmen von Vorlesungseinheiten mit koordinierten Praxisphasen in Teilgruppen zu verbinden. Für eine erfolgreiche Durchführung und Erarbeitung des begleitenden Praxisprojektes durch mehrere Teilgruppen sind organisatorische und technische Randbedingungen zu beachten.
Es wird ein umfassendes Mentoring Konzept im Studiengang Informatik an der RWTH Aachen vorgestellt, das den Übergang von der Schule zur Universität unterstützt und gleichzeitig beim Auftreten von Schwierigkeiten im Verlauf des Studiums effiziente und kompetente Beratung bietet. Das Programm erreicht durchgängig hohe Akzeptanzwerte bei den Studierenden trotz verpflichtender Teilnahme im ersten Semester. Die Wirksamkeit des Programms ist durch die zahlreichen einflussgebenden Variablen zwar rein quantitativ kaum messbar, die Möglichkeit auf organisatorische und fachliche Probleme eines Jahrgangs reagieren zu können sowie einen Einblick auf die Gründe für einen Studienabbruch zu bekommen, bestätigt aber die Notwendigkeit der Maßnahme.
The traditional purpose of algorithm in education is to prepare students for programming. In our effort to introduce the practically missing computing science into Czech general secondary education, we have revisited this purpose.We propose an approach, which is in better accordance with the goals of general secondary education in Czechia. The importance of programming is diminishing, while recognition of algorithmic procedures and precise (yet concise) communication of algorithms is gaining importance. This includes expressing algorithms in natural language, which is more useful for most of the students than programming. We propose criteria to evaluate such descriptions. Finally, an idea about the limitations is required (inefficient algorithms, unsolvable problems, Turing’s test). We describe these adjusted educational goals and an outline of the resulting course. Our experience with carrying out the proposed intentions is satisfactory, although we did not accomplish all the defined goals.
The growing impact of globalisation and the development of
a ‘knowledge society’ have led many to argue that 21st century skills are
essential for life in twenty-first century society and that ICT is central
to their development. This paper describes how 21st century skills, in
particular digital literacy, critical thinking, creativity, communication
and collaboration skills, have been conceptualised and embedded in the
resources developed for teachers in iTEC, a four-year, European project.
The effectiveness of this approach is considered in light of the data
collected through the evaluation of the pilots, which considers both the
potential benefits of using technology to support the development of
21st century skills, but also the challenges of doing so. Finally, the paper
discusses the learning support systems required in order to transform
pedagogies and embed 21st century skills. It is argued that support is
required in standards and assessment; curriculum and instruction; professional
development; and learning environments.
Development of competence-oriented curricula is still an important theme in informatics education. Unfortunately informatics curricula, which include the domain of logic programming, are still input-orientated or lack detailed competence descriptions. Therefore, the development of competence model and of learning outcomes' descriptions is essential for the learning process in this domain. A prior research developed both. The next research step is to formulate test items to measure the described learning outcomes. This article describes this procedure and exemplifies test items. It also relates a test in school to the items and shows which misconceptions and typical errors are important to discuss in class. The test result can also confirm or disprove the competence model. Therefore, this school test is important for theoretical research as well as for the concrete planning of lessons. Quantitative analysis in school is important for evaluation and improvement of informatics education.
In this project I constructed a workflow that takes a DNA sequence as input and provides a phylogenetic tree, consisting of the input sequence and other sequences which were found during a database search. In this phylogenetic tree the sequences are arranged depending on similarities. In bioinformatics, constructing phylogenetic trees is often used to explore the evolutionary relationships of genes or organisms and to understand the mechanisms of evolution itself.
The integration of multiple data sources is a common problem in a large variety of applications. Traditionally, handcrafted similarity measures are used to discover, merge, and integrate multiple representations of the same entity-duplicates-into a large homogeneous collection of data. Often, these similarity measures do not cope well with the heterogeneity of the underlying dataset. In addition, domain experts are needed to manually design and configure such measures, which is both time-consuming and requires extensive domain expertise. <br /> We propose a deep Siamese neural network, capable of learning a similarity measure that is tailored to the characteristics of a particular dataset. With the properties of deep learning methods, we are able to eliminate the manual feature engineering process and thus considerably reduce the effort required for model construction. In addition, we show that it is possible to transfer knowledge acquired during the deduplication of one dataset to another, and thus significantly reduce the amount of data required to train a similarity measure. We evaluated our method on multiple datasets and compare our approach to state-of-the-art deduplication methods. Our approach outperforms competitors by up to +26 percent F-measure, depending on task and dataset. In addition, we show that knowledge transfer is not only feasible, but in our experiments led to an improvement in F-measure of up to +4.7 percent.
User Experience (UX) describes the holistic experience of a user before, during, and after interaction with a platform, product, or service. UX adds value and attraction to their sole functionality and is therefore highly relevant for firms. The increased interest in UX has produced a vast amount of scholarly research since 1983. The research field is, therefore, complex and scattered. Conducting a bibliometric analysis, we aim at structuring the field quantitatively and rather abstractly. We employed citation analyses, co-citation analyses, and content analyses to evaluate productivity and impact of extant research. We suggest that future research should focus more on business and management related topics.
Erstsemester-Studierende sind mit den Anforderungen des Lehr-/ Lernprozess einer Universität oder Fachhochschule noch nicht vertraut. Ihre Erwartungen orientieren sich vielmehr an ihrer bisherigen Lerngeschichte (Abitur, Fachabitur, o. ä.). Neben den fachlichen Anforderungen des ersten Semesters müssen die Studierenden also auch Veränderungen im Lehr-/Lernprozess erkennen und bewältigen. Es wird anhand einer Output-orientierten
informatischen Lehrveranstaltung aufgezeigt, dass sich aus deren strengen Anforderungen der Messbarkeit klare Kompetenzbeschreibungen ergeben, die besonders dem Orientierungsbedürfnis Erstsemester-Studierender entgegenkommen.
In the project MoKoM, which is funded by the German
Research Foundation (DFG) from 2008 to 2012, a test instrument
measuring students’ competences in computer science was developed.
This paper presents the results of an expert rating of the levels of
students’ competences done for the items of the instrument.
At first we will describe the difficulty-relevant features that were
used for the evaluation. These were deduced from computer science,
psychological and didactical findings and resources. Potentials and
desiderata of this research method are discussed further on. Finally
we will present our conclusions on the results and give an outlook on
further steps.
As a result of the Bologna reform of educational systems in
Europe the outcome orientation of learning processes, competence-oriented
descriptions of the curricula and competence-oriented assessment
procedures became standard also in Computer Science Education
(CSE). The following keynote addresses important issues of shaping
a CSE competence model especially in the area of informatics system
comprehension and object-oriented modelling. Objectives and research
methodology of the project MoKoM (Modelling and Measurement
of Competences in CSE) are explained. Firstly, the CSE competence
model was derived based on theoretical concepts and then secondly the
model was empirically examined and refined using expert interviews.
Furthermore, the paper depicts the development and examination of
a competence measurement instrument, which was derived from the
competence model. Therefore, the instrument was applied to a large
sample of students at the gymnasium’s upper class level. Subsequently,
efforts to develop a competence level model, based on the retrieved empirical
results and on expert ratings are presented. Finally, further demands
on research on competence modelling in CSE will be outlined.
The reconstruction of cone-beam computed tomography data using filtered back-projection algorithms unavoidably results in severe artefacts. We describe how the Direct Iterative Reconstruction of Computed Tomography Trajectories (DIRECTT) algorithm can be combined with a model of the artefacts for the reconstruction of such data. The implementation of DIRECTT results in reconstructed volumes of superior quality compared to the conventional algorithms.
How does the Implementation of a Literacy Learning Tool Kit influence Literacy Skill Acquisition?

This study aimed at following how teachers transfer skills
into results while using ABRA literacy software. This was done in
the second part of the pilot study whose aim was to provide equity to
control group teachers and students by exposing them to the ABRACADABRA
treatment after the end of phase 1. This opportunity was
used to follow the phase 1 teachers to see how the skills learned were
being transformed into results. A standard three-day initial training and
planning session on how to use ABRA to teach literacy was held at the
beginning of each phase for ABRA teachers (phase 1 experimental and
phase 2 delayed ABRA). Teachers were provided with teaching materials
including a tentative ABRA curriculum developed to align with the
Kenyan English Language requirements for year 1 and 3 students. Results
showed that although there was no significant difference between
the groups in vocabulary-related subscales which include word reading
and meaning as well as sentence comprehension, students in ABRACADABRA
classes improved their scores at a significantly higher rate
than students in control classes in comprehension related scores. An
average student in the ABRACADABRA group improved by 12 and
16 percentile points respectively compared to their counterparts in the
control group.
The MOOC-CEDIA Observatory

In the last few years, an important amount of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCS) has been made available to the worldwide community, mainly by European and North American universities (i.e. United States). Since its emergence, the adoption of these educational resources has been widely studied by several research groups and universities with the aim of understanding their evolution and impact in educational models, through the time. In the case of Latin America, data from the MOOC-UC Observatory (updated until 2018) shows that, the adoption of these courses by universities in the region has been slow and heterogeneous. In the specific case of Ecuador, although some data is available, there is lack of information regarding the construction, publication and/or adoption of such courses by universities in the country. Moreover, there are not updated studies designed to identify and analyze the barriers and factors affecting the adoption of MOOCs in the country. The aim of this work is to present the MOOC-CEDIA Observatory, a web platform that offers interactive visualizations on the adoption of MOOCs in Ecuador. The main results of the study show that: (1) until 2020 there have been 99 MOOCs in Ecuador, (2) the domains of MOOCs are mostly related to applied sciences, social sciences and natural sciences, with the humanities being the least covered, (3) Open edX and Moodle are the most widely used platforms to deploy such courses. It is expected that the conclusions drawn from this analysis, will allow the design of recommendations aimed to promote the creation and use of quality MOOCs in Ecuador and help institutions to chart the route for their adoption, both for internal use by their community but also by society in general.
Die Veröffentlichung eines global frei verfügbaren Onlinekurses abseits der großen MOOC Plattformen bringt spezielle Herausforderungen mit sich. Neben technischen Herausforderungen sind eine effiziente Wissensvermittlung und die Erhaltung der Lernmotivation zentral. Der folgende Beitrag stellt Techniken zur Steigerung der Lerneffizienz und -motivation anhand des ARCS Modells vor. Er zeigt auf, wie die verschiedenen Techniken in der Entwicklung des Onlinekurses „Designing Sustainable Food Systems“ umgesetzt wurden und inwieweit sie erfolgreich waren.

Game-based Learning und Edutainment sind aktuelle Schlagworte im Bereich der Hochschulausbildung. Zunächst verbindet man damit die Integration einer Spiel- und Spaßkultur in die herkömmlichen Lehrveranstaltungen wie Vorlesungen, Übungen, Praktika und Seminare. Die nachfolgenden Ausführungen gehen einer genaueren Begriffsanalyse nach und untersuchen, ob Game-based Learning und Edutainment tatsächlich neuartige Unterrichtsformen erfordern oder neue didaktische Überlegungen in bestehendes Unterrichtsgeschehen bringen – oder ob es nicht doch an einigen Stellen „alter Wein in neuen Schläuchen“ ist.
Working conditions of knowledge workers have been subject to rapid change recently. Digital nomadism is no longer a phenomenon that relates only to entrepreneurs, freelancers, and gig workers. Corporate employees, too, have begun to uncouple their work from stationary (home) offices and 9-to-5 schedules. However, pursuing a permanent job in a corporate environment is still subject to fundamentally different values than postulated by the original notion of digital nomadism. Therefore, this paper explores the work identity of what is referred to as ‘corporate nomads’. By drawing on identity theory and the results of semi-structured interviews, the paper proposes a conceptualization of the corporate nomad archetype and presents nine salient identity issues of corporate nomads (e.g., holding multiple contradictory identities, the flexibility paradox, or collaboration constraints). By introducing the ‘corporate nomad’ archetype to the Information Systems literature, this article helps to rethink established conceptions of “home office” and socio-spatial configurations of knowledge work.
Information technology and digital solutions as enablers in the tourism sector require continuous development of skills, as digital transformation is characterized by fast change, complexity and uncertainty. This research investigates how a cMOOC concept could support the tourism industry. A consortium of three universities, a tourism association, and a tourist attraction investigates online learning needs and habits of tourism industry stakeholders in the field of digitalization in a cross-border study in the Baltic Sea region. The multi-national survey (n = 244) reveals a high interest in participating in an online learning community, with two-thirds of respondents seeing opportunities to contributing to such community apart from consuming knowledge. The paper demonstrates preferred ways of learning, motivational and hampering aspects as well as types of possible contributions.
First-class concepts

Ideally, programs are partitioned into independently maintainable and understandable modules. As a system grows, its architecture gradually loses the capability to accommodate new concepts in a modular way. While refactoring is expensive and not always possible, and the programming language might lack dedicated primary language constructs to express certain cross-cutting concerns, programmers are still able to explain and delineate convoluted concepts through secondary means: code comments, use of whitespace and arrangement of code, documentation, or communicating tacit knowledge. <br /> Secondary constructs are easy to change and provide high flexibility in communicating cross-cutting concerns and other concepts among programmers. However, such secondary constructs usually have no reified representation that can be explored and manipulated as first-class entities through the programming environment. <br /> In this exploratory work, we discuss novel ways to express a wide range of concepts, including cross-cutting concerns, patterns, and lifecycle artifacts independently of the dominant decomposition imposed by an existing architecture. We propose the representation of concepts as first-class objects inside the programming environment that retain the capability to change as easily as code comments. We explore new tools that allow programmers to view, navigate, and change programs based on conceptual perspectives. In a small case study, we demonstrate how such views can be created and how the programming experience changes from draining programmers' attention by stretching it across multiple modules toward focusing it on cohesively presented concepts. Our designs are geared toward facilitating multiple secondary perspectives on a system to co-exist in symbiosis with the original architecture, hence making it easier to explore, understand, and explain complex contexts and narratives that are hard or impossible to express using primary modularity constructs.
Im Bachelor-Studiengang (B. Sc.) IT Security an der Fachhochschule St. Pölten wurde im Wintersemester 2011/12 versuchsweise die Lehrorganisation im ersten Fachsemester verändert: Die Module bzw. Teilmodule wurden nicht mehr alle parallel zueinander unterrichtet, sondern jedes Modul wurde exklusiv über einige Wochen abgehalten. Im Beitrag werden die Auswirkungen und bisherigen Erfahrungen mit dieser Reorganisation der Lehre geschildert: So haben sich die Noten im Mittel um etwa eine Note verbessert, die Zahl derjenigen Studierenden, die durch Prüfungen durchfallen, ist drastisch gesunken. Die Zufriedenheit der Studierenden und Lehrenden ist so groß, dass diese Form der Lehrorganisation im gesamten Bachelor- und auch im Masterstudiengang übernommen wird.
Participants of this workshop will be confronted exemplarily
with a considerable inconsistency of global Informatics education at
lower secondary level. More importantly, they are invited to contribute
actively on this issue in form of short case studies of their countries.
Until now, very few countries have been successful in implementing
Informatics or Computing at primary and lower secondary level. The
spectrum from digital literacy to informatics, particularly as a discipline
in its own right, has not really achieved a breakthrough and seems to
be underrepresented for these age groups. The goal of this workshop
is not only to discuss the anamnesis and diagnosis of this fragmented
field, but also to discuss and suggest viable forms of therapy in form of
setting educational standards. Making visible good practices in some
countries and comparing successful approaches are rewarding tasks for
this workshop.
Discussing and defining common educational standards on a transcontinental
level for the age group of 14 to 15 years old students in a readable,
assessable and acceptable form should keep the participants of this
workshop active beyond the limited time at the workshop.
