- Jakob Wassermann’s novel “Die Juden von Zirndorf ” (“The Jews of Zirndorf ”, 1897), an incisive portrait of German-Jewish life, is grounded on different messianic concepts, which can only partly be ascribed to the Jewish tradition as such. The Jewish boy Agathon, who is the main protagonist in the second part of the book, shows traits of both the Jewish Messiah and the Christian Saviour combined. Several references to the figure of Jesus and the aesthetic functionalisation of Christological motifs can be found in the novel. These references have to be read within the context of the “bringing Jesus back home to Judaism”-movement, which emerged the rise of the Wissenschaft des Judentums in the nineteenth century. The present article will – against the background of contemporary interpretations of Jesus – highlight Jesus’ features present in the characterisation of Agathon and investigate the appropriation of Christological motifs especially in the second part of the novel.
