Daniel Kehlmann gibt vor, mit seinem Roman Die Vermessung der Welt „verschwiegene oder übersehene Wahrheiten sichtbar“ zu machen. Dadurch, dass er die Leser bewusst im Zweifel lässt, was historisch belegt und was erfunden ist, entstehen Missverständnisse. Der Beitrag analysiert die wichtigsten Charakteristika des Kehlmann‘schen und des historischen Alexander von Humboldt und weist nach, dass diese nicht übereinstimmen. Der Aufsatz fragt nach Kehlmanns Rolle, der in der Öffentlichkeit gerne die Pose des Gelehrten einnimmt, seine Erfindungen jedoch nicht offenlegt und sie als angebliches Humboldt-Zitat sogar in einem wissenschaftlichen Text publiziert. Der Beitrag kommt zu dem Schluss, dass alle, die etwas für ihre Allgemeinbildung tun möchten, bei Die Vermessung der Welt an der falschen Adresse sind.
Wie stark sich im Verlauf des zurückliegenden Vierteljahrhunderts der Bekanntheitsgrad Alexander von Humboldts in der deutschsprachigen Öffentlichkeit verändert hat, zeigen nicht nur Fernsehumfragen zu den berühmtesten Deutschen, in denen Alexander von Humboldt mittlerweile figuriert, oder Fernsehserien, die über aktuelle Expeditionen berichten und auf Humboldts Namen zurückgreifen. Am deutlichsten vielleicht belegt dies der enorme Erfolg von Daniel Kehlmanns Roman Die Vermessung der Welt, der ohne die zuvor skizzierte Entwicklung nicht denkbar gewesen wäre. Es ist vor diesem Hintergrund nicht nur reizvoll, sondern aufschlußreich, sich mit dem großen Erfolg dieses kleinen Romans zu beschäftigen. Worum geht es in Die Vermessung der Welt? Und wie läßt sich das »Phänomen Kehlmann« aus etwas größerer Distanz erklären?
Daniel Kehlmanns Roman „Die Vermessung der Welt“ wird hoch gepriesen und streng kritisiert. Kehlmanns Kritiker lesen seine Satire als eine verfälschte Biographie von Gauss und Humboldt, obwohl der Autor wiederholt selbstironische Bemerkungen eingestreut hat, die sein wahres Ziel offenbaren. Der Aufsatz bemüht sich, Kehlmanns fiktiven Roman angemessen zu beurteilen und einige der wirklichen Aktivitäten und Errungenschaften von Gauss und Humboldt zu charakterisieren, indem Kehlmanns erzählte mit den historischen Tatsachen verglichen werden. Beide Wissenschaftler waren stark am Erdmagnetismus interessiert, was zeitweise zu einigen Spannungen zwischen ihnen führte. Humboldts Messmethoden und seine Überzeugung, dass alles Wechselwirkung ist, waren zwei Seiten derselben Medaille. Nur numerische Elemente konnten helfen, die Gesetze zu finden, die die Natur regieren. Humboldts wissenschaftliche Techniken und Ziele (Methode der Mittelwerte) waren gut begründet. Humboldts Reisen und Forschen bildeten eine untrennbare Einheit. Humboldts Naturbegriff schloss beide Möglichkeiten ein, das heißt die natura naturans und die natura naturata, die schaffende und herrschende Natur und die Natur, die von bestimmten Gesetzen beherrscht war. Sein überragendes Interesse an Naturgesetzen gründete auf der Überzeugung, dass sie ewig waren und dass sie die Ordnung und Ewigkeit der Welt garantierten.
Connecting the new world

This article explores the link between the profound technological transformations of the nineteenth century and the life and work of the Prussian scholar Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859). It analyses how Humboldt sought to appropriate the revolutionary new communication and transportation technologies of the time in order to integrate the American continent into global networks of commercial, intellectual and material exchange. Recent scholarship on Humboldt’s expedition to the New World (1799-1804) has claimed that his descriptions of tropical landscapes opened up South America to a range of ‘transformative interventions’ (Pratt) by European capitalists and investors. These studies, however, have not analysed the motivations underlying Humboldt’s support for such intrusions into nature. Furthermore, they have not explored the role that such projects played in shaping Humboldt’s understanding of the forces behind the progress of societies. To comprehend Humboldt’s approval for human interventions in America’s natural world, this study first explores the role that eighteenth-century theories of progress and the notion of geographical determinism played in shaping his conception of civilisational development. It will look at concrete examples of transformative interventions in the American hemisphere that were actively proposed by Humboldt and intended to overcome natural obstacles to human interaction. These were the use of steamships, electric telegraphy, railroads and large-scale canals that together enabled global trade and communication to occur at an unprecedented pace. All these contemporary innovations will be linked to the four motifs of nets, mobility, progress and acceleration, which were driving forces behind the ‘transformation of the world’ that took place in the course of the nineteenth century.
Carlos Montúfar (1780-1816) war ab Quito das dritte ständige Mitglied der amerikanischen Humboldt-Expedition zusammen mit Aimé Bonpland. Das Tagebuch, das er vom 9. Juni bis zum 10. September 1802 kurz vor Cajamarca führte, ist von Interesse für Humboldt-Forscher, zumal Bonpland scheinbar keine Zeugnisse weder in Brief- noch in Tagebuchform überlieferte. Recherchen am Original des Montúfar-Tagebuchs ergaben, dass die 1888 veröffentlichte Transkription durch Marcos Jiménez de la Espada aus verschiedenen Gründen problematisch ist. Es muss deshalb ein Desiderat der Humboldt-Forschung sein, eine korrigierte und kommentierte Transkription vorzulegen. Das geschieht hier zusammen mit einer digitalisierten Kopie des Originals

La popularidad de Alejandro de Humboldt ha cambiado profundamente dentro del último cuarto de siglo en la opinión pública de habla alemana. Prueba de esto son no sólo las encuestas televisivas sobre los alemanes más famosos, dentro de las cuales figura en estos momentos Alejandro de Humboldt, o programas de televisión sobre expediciones actuales, en los que continuamente se retoma el nombre de Humboldt; quizás la comprobación más clara de este cambio es el éxito enorme de la novela Die Vermessung der Welt de Daniel Kehlmann. Éxito que sería impensable sin el proceso esbozado más arriba. Ante este trasfondo, estudiar el gran éxito de esta pequeña novela resulta no sólo atractivo, sino además revelador. ¿De qué se trata Die Vermessung der Welt? ¿Cómo se puede explicar el »fenómeno Kehlmann« desde una distancia relativamente mayor?
Der kurze, nicht vollständig erhaltene Briefwechsel zwischen Alexander von Humboldt und Karl Ernst von Baer behandelt sehr verschiedene Themen: Politik, Kriegsgefahr, den Wissenschaftsbetrieb, Auszeichnungen und Tagungen, Embryologie und Cholera. Gemeinsam mit Briefen und Reden ergibt sich dabei ein differenziertes Bild der Beurteilung der beiden Wissenschaftler durch den jeweils anderen. Während Baer sich als Bewunderer Humboldts erweist, erscheint umgekehrt Humboldts Einschätzung Baers als ambivalent.
