Ladenkollektive, Raubdrucke und politische Agitation: Ein spannendes Stück Kulturgeschichte der alten Bundesrepublik.
Aus den Aufbrüchen der 1968er Jahre heraus entstanden bundesweit unzählige linke Verlage und Buchläden. Mit Klassikern des Marxismus und Schlüsseltexten der Studentenbewegung prägten sie in den 1970er Jahren wesentlich die politische Kultur der alten Bundesrepublik.
Uwe Sonnenberg untersucht Entstehung, Charakter und Wandel dieses Buchhandels. Dabei nimmt der Autor mit dem Verband des linken Buchhandels (VLB) einen wenig bekannten, bislang einzigartigen Zusammenschluss in den Fokus. Gegründet 1970 vereinigte er parteiunabhängige, kollektiv betriebene Verlage, Druckereien, Vertriebe und Auslieferungen. Er besetzte Begriff und Praxis dieses Bewegungsbuchhandels und bildete ein eigenes politisch-literarisches Feld und einen eigenständigen ökonomischen Sektor. Bundesweit waren zwischen 150 und 200 Projekte im VLB engagiert.
Sonnenberg zeigt, wie die von den linken Buchhandelsunternehmen produzierte und vertriebene Literatur Weltbilder und Denkweisen ihrer Produzenten und Rezipienten prägte. Damit gelingt es dem Autor, Buchhandels- und Zeitgeschichtsforschung auf innovative Weise miteinander in Verbindung zu bringen.

Spektakuläre Debatten um bedeutende Fossilienfunde begleiteten die Suche nach unseren Ursprüngen.
Wer waren die ersten Menschen? Nachdem die Antwort darauf lange mit der Schöpfungsgeschichte verbunden war, entflammten ab Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts neuartige Debatten. Funde menschlicher Fossilien führten zu Auseinandersetzungen über den Ursprung der Menschheit. Umkämpft war nicht nur die Frage, ob die ersten Menschen Deutsche, Engländer, Europäer oder Asiaten waren, ob schwarz oder weiß. Es ging um das Wesen des Menschen. Die politische Regulierung der Vermögensweitergabe und individuelle Erbregelungen in der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts.
Das Vererben von Vermögen stabilisiert die Gesellschaftsordnung. Erbregelungen können soziale Ungleichheitsverhältnisse in die Zukunft fortschreiben oder zu Enttäuschungen übergangener Familienmitglieder führen. Da das Vererben soziale Gerechtigkeits- und Familienvorstellungen berührt, ist seine Regulierung politisch höchst umstritten. Obwohl die jährlich vererbten Vermögen in den letzten Jahren immer neue Rekordhöhen erreichten, ist die Vorgeschichte dieser gegenwärtigen Entwicklung bisher kaum erforscht.
Ronny Grundig untersucht den Wandel der Vermögensvererbung vom Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs bis zum Ende der 1980er Jahre. Er blickt auf politische Regulierungen,
die Praktiken des Vererbens und die Aneignung des Erbes durch die Hinterbliebenen. Der Autor analysiert die Steuervermeidung Vermögender sowie Konflikte zwischen Erben und Erbinnen. Ebenso zeigt er den Wandel von Paar- und Familienbeziehungen beim Vererben, die sich in den Testamenten niederschlagen und die Verteilung der hinterlassenen Vermögen beeinflussen.

In the last two centuries BC, with the Republic limping towards its end, the cultivated ruling elite began to lose its moral and political authority.1 Its members not only held themselves responsible for the so-called crisis of tradition, but at the same time also conveyed the impression of a loss of memory, as if all Romans were suffering from some kind of amnesia or identity crisis.2 In particular, institutional figures such as pontiffs and augurs, who had preserved Rome’s memory throughout its history, were accused of neglecting their duties and, by extension, of allowing ancient practices and values to slowly disappear.3 Accordingly, Cicero and Varro, both perfect representatives of this elite, employed recurrent terms such as neglect (neglegentia/neglegere), involuntary abandon (amittere), oblivion (oblivio), vanishing of institutions (evanescere), and ignorance (ignoratio/ignorare) to describe this critical loss of information; they depicted the citizenry of Rome (civitas) as disoriented and estranged, incapable of sharing any common knowledge or values.
This article proposes several conceptual frameworks for examining the widespread use of classical intertexts depicting the supernatural in popular media. Whether the supernatural is viewed as reality or simply a trope, it represents the human capacity and desire to explore worlds and meanings beyond the obvious and mundane. Representations of classical gods, heroes, and monsters evoke the power of mythic stories to probe and explain human psychology, social concerns, philosophical questions, and religious beliefs, including belief about the paranormal and supernatural. The entertainment value of popular media allows creators and audiences to engage with larger issues in non-dogmatic and playful ways that help them negotiate tensions among various beliefs and identities. This paper also gives an overview of the other articles in this journal issue, showing overlapping themes and patterns that connect with these tensions. By combining knowledge of classical myths in their original contexts with knowledge about contemporary culture, classical scholars contribute unique perspectives about why classical intertexts dominate in popular media today.

En se penchant sur les réécritures de l'histoire pour le citoyen dans l’espace germanique et la France des Lumières et de la Révolution, ce livre apporte un regard nouveau et distancié sur les usages publics de l’histoire aujourd'hui, en France en particulier où le débat autour du roman national reste vif. La première partie de l’ouvrage, consacrée à l’exemplarité d’une histoire illustrée de gravures qui ont durablement marqué les représentations du passé, revisite la question des grands hommes, reproduit, traduit et analyse la circulation d’exemples édifiants entre les deux espaces.
La deuxième partie traite d’un mode de représentation pédagogique de l’histoire qui suscitait, et suscite toujours, la fascination tout en posant un défi de méthode: l’usage pédagogique d’un tableau permettant de saisir d’un seul coup d’oeil toute l’histoire d’un peuple voire de l’humanité tout entière, et d’en tirer des leçons politiques. L’idée, encore structurante aujourd’hui, d’un modèle politique ou pédagogique allemand ou français d’une écriture de l’histoire couplée, ou non, à la géographie est examinée ici au prisme des contextes précis où elle a été pensée.

In his work De insomniis (On Dreams), Synesios adopts a rather critical view of theurgy, resembling Porphyry’s attitude; his wording shows polemical exaggeration. His insistence on the usefulness of dream revelation for hunting might be read as a (not too serious) claim to the divine inspiration of his work κυνηγετικαί.
In der vorliegenden Arbeit wird die Geschichte des militärischen Transfusionswesens in Deutschland, ausgehend vom Deutsch-Französischen Krieg, über den Ersten und Zweiten Weltkrieg, bis hin zu der Organisation des Blutspendewesens sowie der Herstellung von Blut- und Blutbestandteilkonserven in der NVA, aber auch der Bundeswehr analysiert, Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede der einzelnen Epochen und Armeen aufgezeigt sowie rückblickend ethische Problemfelder identifiziert und aufgearbeitet. Zusätzlich werden die den jeweiligen Zeiträumen zugeordneten technischen Apparaturen und Verfahren sowie zeitgenössische Forschungsprojekte skizziert.
Der Artikel fragt nach einem möglichen Geltungsbereich heutiger Konzeptualisierungen der literarischen Transkulturalität für die polnische(n) Literatur(en). Der Hintergrund der Überlegungen ist die ‚monokulturelle‘ Kondition der polnischen Gesellschaft nach den Katastrophen des 20. Jahrhunderts, die u.a. in den literarischen Rückgriffen auf die vergangene kulturelle Pluralität in den letzten drei Dekaden kritisch reflektiert wurde, heute aber wieder – in der populistisch-nationalistischen Politik – affirmiert wird. Dabei ermöglicht eine historische Perspektive auf die kulturellen Verflechtungen des literarischen Schreibens in der polnischen Sprache einen Einblick in die historisch heterogenen Formen literarischer Transkulturalität, die von den jeweiligen politischen und sozialen Kontexten abhängen. Eine umfassende Behandlung des Schreibens in der polnischen Sprache unter Bedingungen des Sprachwechsels bzw. der Mehrsprachigkeit seit der frühen Neuzeit bis zum 20. Jh. bleibt ein Desiderat. Den Höhepunkt einer auf diese Art gedachten Literaturgeschichte bildet – so die These des Artikels – die spezifische Ausprägung der polnisch-jüdischen Literatur in der Zwischenkriegszeit, in welcher Konzepte einer hybriden Doppelzugehörigkeit in linguistischen und topographischen Chiasmen dramatisch auf die Spitze getrieben werden und somit die ungelösten Probleme der Zeit spiegeln.
This paper examines the intertext between Tolkien’s Ithilien episode in Two Towers and artistic presentations of plants in the art and literature of Augustan Rome. We argue that the evident ‘superbloom’ depicted in the ekphrasis of the flora of Ithilien recalls both Vergilian botanical adynata (especially in the Georgics) and Roman wall paintings of the Augustan period.

Der Tod wird oftmals als größtmögliche menschliche Krise wahrgenommen. Doch wie definiert sich Krise im Kontext von Tod und Sterben? Dieser Frage geht der vorliegende Sammelband im zeitlichen Rahmen des langen 19. Jahrhunderts nach, welches sich durch zahlreiche Brüche und Veränderungen im Umgang mit dem Tod und den Verstorbenen auszeichnet.
Die Beiträge sind das Ergebnis eines gleichnamigen Symposiums im Jahr 2019. Aus interdisziplinärer Perspektive thematisieren Jungforscher:innen Bestattungspraktiken im Krieg und in Seuchenzeiten, setzen sich mit Innovationen im europäischen Bestattungswesen und mit den daraus resultierenden Spannungsverhältnissen auseinander. Sie problematisieren die Repräsentationsbedürfnisse des Adels im Zusammenhang mit dem Tod und untersuchen Erinnerungskulturen sowie das bewusste Verdrängen von Todeskontexten. Hierbei wird der Fokus auf die Akteur:innen gelegt, deren Intentionen und ihr konkretes Handeln. Krisen fungieren zum einen als Motor für neue Entwicklungen. Zum anderen verdeutlichen sie bisweilen eine erstaunliche Innovationsresistenz beim Umgang mit dem Tod. Eines aber zeichnet Krisen maßgeblich aus: sie zwingen die Betroffenen zu einer Entscheidung.

The editors discuss Tolkien’s complicated and indirect relationship with classical models, underscoring certain emergent themes in volume’s contributions, such as decline, multifocal reception and relationship with nature.
The Throne of the King

A conspicuous feature of Tolkien’s description of the city of Minas Tirith in The Return of The King is the depiction of two thrones in the Great Hall; one empty throne reserved for the king, and one seat for the steward of Gondor. This paper aims to ascertain the late antique and mediaeval sources of inspiration behind Tolkien’s creation of the throne room in Minas Tirith. As a starting point, we shall compare the setting of the two thrones in Minas Tirith with a motive in Christian iconography, the hetoimasia, and its architectural expression in the Chrysotriklinos, the throne room in the Byzantine Great Palace in Constantinople. Next, we shall show that Tolkien intentionally obscured his appropriation of the Byzantine throne room to create a multi-layered image of rulership, in accordance with his aesthetics of applicability and allegory. In conclusion, we shall formulate some remarks on the interpretation of the association between the Byzantine Chrysotriklinos and the Gondorian Great Hall. As a form of Tolkien’s literary process of sub-creation, the description of the throne room in Minas Tirith serves to emphasise the significance of The Return of the King as a retelling of Christ’s restoration of the fallen world, placing the work of Tolkien in the context of a strong personal Catholic piety.
The Right to Research

Refugees and displaced people rarely figure as historical actors, and almost never as historical narrators. We often assume a person residing in a refugee camp, lacking funding, training, social networks, and other material resources that enable the research and writing of academic history, cannot be a historian because a historian cannot be a person residing in a refugee camp.
The Right to Research disrupts this tautology by featuring nine works by refugee and host-community researchers from across Africa, Europe, and the Middle East. Identifying the intrinsic challenges of making space for diverse voices within a research framework and infrastructure that is inherently unequal, this edited volume offers a critical reflection on what history means, who narrates it, and what happens when those long excluded from authorship bring their knowledge and perspectives to bear. Chapters address topics such as education in Kakuma Refugee Camp, the political power of hip-hop in Rwanda, women migrants to Yemen, and the development of photojournalism in Kurdistan.

For more than thirty years, collecting oral histories has been recognized as an effective teaching strategy in the West. Although it is rare in Gulf Cooperative Council (GCC) countries, the authors adopted it to bridge knowledge gaps they observed in their Saudi Arabian students. The reclamation of familial stories and tribal information using oral history methodologies reconnected students to their past while facilitating a unique learning experience. This paper describes how an oral history project was created for female undergraduate students in Saudi Arabia to help them move beyond the hard science approach supported in the Arabian world to one that embraces a narrative-based methodology. Historically, oral histories - an important pillar of Arabian society - were used to transfer significant tribal information, customs, traditions, and stories from one generation to the next. Since the discovery of oil, the kingdom has undergone dramatic societal and lifestyle transformations resulting in the loss of some traditions. The fundamental goal for this project was to improve the students' comprehension of humanities and social science courses by reconnecting them to their past using historical methods.

This paper introduces the concepts of the data set and discusses the validity of its contents.

The Persistence of Memory

The 2017 Pixar film Coco and the 2021 Disney film Encanto form a small part of an increasing modern wave of media focused on parent-child conflicts caused by intergenerational trauma and rejection. Other recent works in this genre include the video game Hades, the films Turning Red and Everything Everywhere All At Once, and the television series Ms. Marvel. The traumas in all these films, some directed explicitly at a younger audience and some pitched more broadly, serve as a distinct set of meditations on the immigrant experience, even while not necessarily focusing on literal immigration. They also all invoke imagery of ghosts and death, both echoing specific classical Mediterranean motifs and tropes and incorporating a wide variety of other cultures’ supernatural traditions. These works’ concern with familial traumas of separation, culture shock, and loss of ancestral memories and connections contrasts sharply with the individual-focused myth of the American Dream common to earlier generations of American media, in which a lone individual typically emigrates, assimilates, and succeeds in a new culture, forming a new family and set of myths. However, themes of assimilation and questions of cultural imperialism also form a bridge between ancient Roman and modern North American anxieties and traditions.
Despite its fame, the Winged Victory of Samothrace keeps on fascinating not only every visitor of the Louvre museum, but also the eye of the connoisseur. Despite its recent restoration in 2014, some of its mysteries might indeed never be solved, like the identity of its sculptor. But this fascination also comes from the statue itself, its majestic aesthetics and lack of head, in a similar fashion perhaps to the loss of the Venus of Milo’s arms. Since her discovery more than 150 years ago by Charles Champoiseau, she’s been on the throne at the top of the Daru stairs at the Louvre Museum. This hellenistic masterpiece, that Champoiseau called a ”mousseline de marbre”, became a must see in the Paris museum, together with the Mona Lisa and its other chefs d’oeuvre. But this statue’s fate is not set in stone. Many modern artists, like Omar Hassan or Xu Zhen, have tried to make it their own and give it a new depth. Recently, Beyonce and Jay-Z also offered a new perspective by including this Louvre masterpiece, among others, in their political masterstroke, the video clip ”Apeshit”. This paper seeks to decode the meanings and symbolism of these new versions of the Nike.

It was drawn by Tupaia, an arioi priest, chiefly advisor and master navigator from Ra‘iātea in the Leeward Society Islands in collaboration with various members of the crew of James Cook’s Endeavour, in two distinct moments of mapmaking and three draft stages between August 1769 and February 1770. To this day, the identity of many islands on the chart, and the logic of their arrangement have posed a riddle to researchers. Drawing in part on archival material hitherto overlooked, in this long essay we propose a new understanding of the chart’s cartographic logic, offer a detailed reconstruction of its genesis, and thus for the first time present a comprehensive reading of Tupaia’s Map. The chart not only underscores the extent and mastery of Polynesian navigation, it is also a remarkable feat of translation between two very different wayfinding systems and their respective representational models.

This master thesis will analyze the background of the involvement of the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) and the German Democratic Republic (GDR) in Korea during the 1950s in the context of the Cold War. In both Korean states, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) as well as the Republic of Korea (ROK), the so-called humanitarian aid that was provided to them in the form of medical and economic assistance to help surmount the hardship of the postwar period is remembered with great appreciation to this day. However, critical views on the German engagement in Korea are still relatively hard to find. In this paper, two exemplary cases will be studied: the GDR’s city reconstruction project in the North Korean cities of Hamheung and Heungnam and the FRG’s medical assistance to the ROK by means of the West German Red Cross Hospital in Busan. By looking at primary sources like governmental documents, this thesis will examine the geopolitical conditions and particular national interests that stood behind the German development and humanitarian aid for the Korean states at that time, thus shedding light on the political goals the two German states pursued, and the benefit they expected to derive from their engagement in Korea. Sources consulted include primary archival materials, secondary sources like monographs, journal articles, contemporary newspaper articles, and interviews with contemporary witnesses.

The German Enlightenment

The term Enlightenment (or Aufklärung) remains heavily contested. Even when historians delimit the remit of the concept, assigning it to a particular historical period rather than to an intellectual or moral programme, the public resonance of the Enlightenment remains high and problematic—especially when equated in an essentialist manner with modernity or some core values of ‘the West’. This Forum has been convened to discuss recent research on the Enlightenment in Germany, different views of the term and its ideological use in public discourse outside academia (and sometimes within it).
Vergil was a fundamental source of inspiration for Tolkien, not only when writing the Lord of the Rings, but also at the beginning of his “world-building”. The Fall of Gondolin, written in 1916, was modeled upon the Aeneid, whose second book shares many similarities with the description of Gondolin’s last day. For instance, the attack that seals the fate of the city takes place during a feast in both works, whereas both protagonists (Aeneas and Tuor) leave wives and sons to fight the enemy and witness deaths of their kings (Priam/Turgon). Other analogies include the topos of the fall of the tallest tower of the city as well as the scenes of Creusa/Idril clasping the knees of her husband and begging him not to go back to the battle. Tolkien chose the Aeneid as his main model because, in his opinion, the Aeneid and The Fall of Gondolin evoked the air of antiquity and melancholy. Vergil’s nostalgia for a “lost world” conveyed in the Aeneid greatly resembles the nostalgia pervading both Tolkien’s writing and life.
Captive Red Army soldiers made up the majority of victims of Nazi Germany’s starvation policy against Soviet civilians and other non-combatants and thus constituted the largest single victim group of the German war of annihilation against the Soviet Union. Indeed, Soviet prisoners of war were the largest victim group of all National Socialist annihilation policies after the European Jews. Before the launch of Operation Barbarossa, it was clear to the Wehrmacht planning departments on exactly what scale they could expect to capture Soviet troops. Yet, they neglected to make the necessary preparations for feeding and sheltering the captured soldiers, who were viewed by the economic staffs and the military leadership alike as direct competitors of German troops and the German home front for precious food supplies. The number of extra mouths to feed was incompatible with German war aims. The obvious limitations on their freedom of movement and the relative ease with which large numbers could be segregated and their rations controlled were crucial factors in the death of over 3 million Soviet POWs, the vast majority directly or indirectly as a result of deliberate policies of neglect, undernourishment, and starvation while in the ‘care’ of the Wehrmacht. The most reliable figures for the mortality of Soviet POWs in German captivity reveal that up to 3.3 million died from a total of just over 5.7 million captured between June 1941 and February 1945 — a proportion of almost 58 percent. Of these, 2 million were already dead by the beginning of February 1942. In English, there is still neither a single monograph nor a single edited volume dedicated to the subject. This article now provides the first detailed stand-alone synthesis in that language addressing the whole period from 1941 to 1945.
