Vergessene Konflikte

Vergessen gehört zur menschlichen Natur. Und was für den Einzelnen gilt, scheint auch für Gesellschaften zu gelten. Politische Katastrophen mögen ein oder zwei Generationen nachwirken, aber dann beginnt das Vergessen. 40 bewaffnete Konflikte toben derzeit in der Welt. Über einige wird informiert, über andere wissen wir wenig oder nichts. Im Thema dieses Heftes wollen wir einige dieser “Vergessenen Konflikte” wieder ins Bewusstsein holen. Wissenschaftler verschiedener deutscher Forschungsinstitutionen beleuchten die Ursachen und Interessen, die zu den Kriegen führen und formulieren Lösungsvorschläge. Im WeltBlick wird die Halbwertszeit des Atomwaffensperrvertrags betrachtet. Außerdem geht es um den neuen internationalen Hotspot Arktis sowie um die Entwicklungsmöglichkeiten der polnischen Außenpolitik.

Ein neues Paradigma deutscher Außenpolitik? Auf die Reden der Münchner Sicherheitskonferenz 2014 gab es ein kontroverses Echo. Von den einen als wegweisend für Deutschlands zukünftige Rolle in der Welt gelobt, wurden sie von anderen als Plädoyer für militärisches Engagement gegeißelt. Aus unterschiedlichen Blickwinkeln nähert sich WeltTrends der jüngsten Kontroverse um ein Mehr an deutscher Verantwortung. Weitere Themen im Heft: Elitenkampf in Thailand, Chinas Rolle in der Weltpolitik, iranische und pakistanische Interessen in Afghanistan sowie die Abrüstung syrischer Chemiewaffen.
Die USA und Wir

Appelle an die Erneuerung der transatlantischen Partnerschaft erklingen zurzeit regelmäßig. Sicherlich wird dies auch der basso continuo bei der Visite der Kanzlerin in Washington. Aber jenseits von Wünschen gibt es in der Politik Interessen. Das gilt auch für die Beziehungen zwischen den USA und Deutschland. Der Supermacht im Abschwung steht die aufsteigende geoökonomische Macht mit globalen Interessen gegenüber. Im Thema diskutieren wir dieses Verhältnis aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven. Weiterhin geht es um die Ukrainekrise, um China sowie um russische Interessen in Afghanistan.
Autoritarismus Global

Autoritarismus global: Entgegen vieler Erwartungen der Politikwissenschaft und des gehobenen Feuilletons aus den frühen 1990er Jahren scheint sich der autoritäre Regimetyp durchzusetzen. Antworten, die politische Regime auf alte und neue Herausforderungen geben, sind immer weniger demokratischer und immer mehr autoritärer Natur. Wir analysieren diesen WeltTrend: von Lateinamerika und Ostasien über Russland und den Nahen Osten bis in die Mitte Europas.
Abgrund Afghanistan

Afghanistan ist seit über 30 Jahren ein von Kriegen geschütteltes Land. Ende 2014 soll der Einsatz der ISAF-Truppen dort beendet werden, doch erscheint dieses „Manöver“ eher wie ein Abbruch denn wie ein geordneter Abzug nach erfolgreicher Mission. Die Sicherheitslage vor Ort ist weiterhin instabil. Das bedeutet auch Instabilität für die Region. Deutsche und internationale Experten ziehen die ernüchternde Bilanz eines militärischen Abenteuers, die bei zukünftigen Auslandseinsätzen - auch der Bundeswehr - bedacht werden sollte.
