Wie Computer heimisch wurden

Mit der Einführung des Personal Computers Ende der 1970er-Jahre wurde ein neuer Markt für Konsument_innen von Computertechnologie geschaffen. Im Gegensatz zu den vorherrschenden Erzählungen über geniale Erfinder, tüchtige Unternehmer und Visionäre der Computerkultur im Silicon Valley nimmt Sophie Ehrmanntraut auch jenen Teil der amerikanischen Gesellschaft in den Blick, der Computer bis dahin nur aus den Nachrichten oder Science-Fiction-Romanen kannte. Ihre Studie zeigt: Die ersten Reaktionen der potenziellen Kundschaft waren ernüchternd – der Umgang mit Computern musste gelernt werden. Doch nicht zuletzt gezieltes Marketing verwandelte schließlich die Rechenmaschine vom selektiven Arbeitsinstrument zum Massenmedium der Informationsgesellschaft.

Die Handschrift D der Driu liet von der maget entstand um 1220 und ist die älteste vollständige erhaltene Fassung des Textes. Priester Wernher gilt als Verfasser der geistlichen Dichtung und erstellt sie im Jahr 1172 auf der Grundlage apokrypher und biblischer Quellen. Die Handschrift D wird in der mediävistischen Germanistik gerne zu jenen Werken gezählt, die den Auftakt einer zunehmenden Verschriftlichung in der Volkssprache markieren. Gemäß ihrem Erscheinungsbild erweist sich die Handschrift und der Zeitpunkt ihrer Entstehung aber vor allem als ein Wendepunkt, an dem der Einfluss der lateinischen Schriftkultur auf die Produktion volkssprachlicher Literatur besonders deutlich wird. Während insgesamt der Anteil der geistlichen Dichtung kontinuierlich abnimmt, erfolgt von literaturwissenschaftlicher Seite zurecht auch die Einordnung der Handschrift in die weltlich-laikale Hofliteratur. In diesem Kontext steht die Handschrift D aber nicht am Beginn einer Blütezeit, sondern weist vor allem in das blühende Spannungsfeld zwischen der lateinisch geprägten Buchproduktion und der geistlichen Dichtung auf der einen und dem Anspruch einer laikalen Rezeptionsgemeinschaft auf der anderen Seite. In diesem Feld bewegt sich meine medienanthropologische Untersuchung. Die Schwerpunkte liegen hierbei auf der Rekonstruktion der Handschriftenherstellung sowie auf der Analyse der Darstellungsprinzipien im Bildprogramm.
Wie kam es zu dem ikonischen Überschuss des christlichen Heiligenbildes? Janine Luge-Winter geht dieser Frage nach, indem sie die verschiedenen Argumente byzantinischen Bildapologien des 8. und 9. Jahrhunderts und der modernen Ikonentheorien des 20. Jahrhunderts erstmals in ihrer Studie versammelt, miteinander vergleicht und kontextualisiert. Sie zeigt, dass das Mehr der Ikone deren besonderer Sichtbarkeit ist, die eine Überwindung der Undarstellbarkeit des Undarstellbaren evoziert, indem sie das Undarstellbare konkret als solches akzeptiert. Verständlich wird dies nur, wenn die Ikone als »etwas anderes« als ein repräsentationales oder mimetisches Bild anerkannt wird.

Altbekannt ist, welch wichtige Rolle Medien bei der Konsolidierung oder aber auch bei der Transformation einer Gesellschaft spielen. Was aber geschieht, wenn Medien von unten aus agieren und dies in großer Zahl geschieht, unter Einbindung vieler gesellschaftlicher Akteure sowie gegenüber einem umfassenden Publikum? In Argentinien hat sich eine faszinierende Radiolandschaft gebildet, die kollektiv, partizipativ und progressiv arbeitet: Die Community-Radios. Viviana Uriona nimmt uns mit auf eine ethnografische Reise durch die Geschichte dieser Radios, analysiert ihre Arbeitsweise und sucht nach den Gründen ihres Erfolges. Am Ende der Lektüre bleibt eine Frage nicht mehr offen: Könnte hierzulande in gleicher Weise gelingen, was dort geschah?
Zeugenschaft im Bild

Zentrales Anliegen der Dissertation ist, Zeugenschaft als visuelle Strategie zu beleuchten. In Abgrenzung zur These der Undarstellbarkeit der Shoah wird der Begriff der Sichtbarmachung nutzbar gemacht, um Prozesse und die Wirkung von Bildern im Zusammenhang mit Zeugenschaft herauszustellen. Ausgangspunkt dabei ist, dass bildliche Zeugnisse einen Gegenpol zu den standardisierten Visualisierungspraktiken der Shoah bieten, sprich dem historischen Bildmaterial aufgenommen durch die Alliierten und der Nationalsozialisten. In der Arbeit wird das historische Bildmaterial als Visualisierungspraxis problematisiert und visuellen Zeugnissen gegenübergestellt, die Augen- und Überlebenszeugen der Shoah, aber auch authentische Orte des Geschehens aus einer nachträglichen Perspektive zeigen. Dabei werden insbesondere zwei kritische Strategien des Umgangs mit historischen Bildern der Shoah hervorgehoben: das Hinterfragen von Archivbildern innerhalb des Films (Harun Farockis AUFSCHUB, 2007) und die Verweigerung von Archivbildern aus der Zeit des Zweiten Weltkrieges (Claude Lanzmanns SHOAH, 1985).
Seit den 1990er Jahren wird Zeugenschaft in der Forschung als philosophische, moralische und erkenntnistheoretische Kategorie in den USA, aber auch in Deutschland viel diskutiert. Dabei wurde die bild- und medienwissenschaftliche Perspektive im Zusammenhang mit Zeugenschaft kaum beleuchtet, darin liegt der Forschungsbeitrag der Arbeit. Insbesondere drei Gesichtspunkte von visueller Zeugenschaft werden herausgearbeitet: 1) die Sichtbarmachung der Überlebenden und der Orte des Geschehens im Jetzt, 2) die nichtsprachlichen Aspekte von Zeugenaussagen und 3) die Rolle des Zuschauers, der durch den Akt des Sehens in einem Imaginationsprozess eine Verknüpfung zwischen den Bildern aus der Jetztzeit und der nicht-sichtbaren Vergangenheit herstellt.
Polen nimmt eine besondere historische Rolle als Zentrum des europäischen Judentums bis zum Zweiten Weltkrieg und gleichzeitig als »Schauplatz des Holocaust« und Ort der Augenzeugenschaft ein. Maßgeblich hat Claude Lanzmanns Film SHOAH dazu beigetragen, die Konzentrations- und Vernichtungslager im Polen der Nachkriegszeit sichtbar zu machen, und damit nicht nur Generationen von polnischen Filmemachern und Künstlern nach ihm beeinflusst, sondern auch kontroverse Debatten in Polen ausgelöst. Anhand der ausgewählten Filme lässt sich in der polnischen Erinnerungskultur seit der Wende von 1989 eine Hinwendung zur polnisch-jüdischen Geschichte erkennen, die sich verstärkt mit den Fragen der polnischen Mittäterschaft und Schuld an der Shoah auseinandersetzt.
Der Untersuchungsgegenstand unterteilt sich in zwei Formate: Dokumentar- und Kunstfilm. Einerseits ist das auf ihre unterschiedlichen Produktions- und Rezeptionsbedingungen sowie die Länge der Arbeiten zurückzuführen. Andererseits bewegen sich die Kategorien auf verschiedenen Reflexionsebenen und zielen auf unterschiedliche Wirkungen beim Zuschauer ab. Während sich in den Dokumentarfilmen zum Teil explizite Bezüge (aber auch Abgrenzungen) zum Lanzmann’schen Projekt erkennen lassen, handelt es sich bei den Produktionen des zeitgenössischen Künstlers Artur Żmijewski um einen Meta-Diskurs, der auf radikale und provokative Art und Weise bestehende erinnerungskulturelle Praktiken ausstellt und kritisch hinterfragt.
Hegels Phantasie

Als »Zwischenreich«, »Drittes« oder »Mitte« bezeichnet, kommt der Imagination seit ihren Anfängen in der Antike die Rolle eines Mediums zu. Gleichzeitig bleibt ihr medialer Aspekt durchgehend ambivalent und prekär. Es ist Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel, der die Imagination nicht mehr als subjektives Vermögen versteht, sondern als Kraft der »Entäußerung« und sie somit medial denkt. In einer bislang wenig beachteten Passage aus Hegels dritter Enzyklopädie von 1830 legt Ekaterina Vassilevski nicht nur die implizite Medialität der Imagination frei, sondern auch den in Hegels Denken verborgenen Begriff des Medialen.
