Viele Briefe von und an Alexander von Humboldt enthalten Zitate aus klassischen Werken der Antike oder aus zeitgenössischen Gedichten, Dramen, Erzählungen. Der Aufsatz versucht anhand einiger Beispiele zu zeigen, dass es den Briefeschreibern weniger darum ging, die Empfänger mit gediegener Bildung zu beeindrucken, als darum, ihren Gedanken anschaulicher und prägnanter Gestalt zu verleihen, zumal in gebildeten Kreisen die Kenntnis der Klassiker und der zeitgenössischen Literatur sozusagen zur Grundausstattung an Bildung gehörte, mit der beinahe spielerisch umgegangen werden konnte.

Am 19. Dezember 1831 wurde der verdienstvolle Mikrobiologe Christian Gottfried Ehrenberg zum korrespondierenden Mitglied des Institut de France gewählt. Alexander von Humboldt, der Ehrenberg als Wissenschaftler hoch schätzte, hat sich energisch für diese Wahl eingesetzt. Ein Zeugnis seines Engagements ist ein Brief an den Mediziner Antoine Baron Portal (1742-1832), den er um seine Stimme bei der bevorstehenden Wahl bat. Die Geschichte der Wahl Ehrenbergs in Verbindung mit diesem Brief und die Gründe für Humboldts Interesse daran sollen hier kurz skizziert werden.

Ein Brief von Alexander von Humboldt an Christian Gottfried Ehrenberg vor der Russischen Reise

Vom 12.4.1829 bis zum 28.12.1829 unternimmt Alexander von Humboldt gemeinsam mit dem Mineralogen Gustav Rose (1798-1873) und dem Biologen Christian Gottfried Ehrenberg (1795-1876) eine Expedition in den Ural und das Altaigebirge. Sie führen vor allem mineralogische, meteorologische und geologische Beobachtungen durch.
Zur Datierung des Briefes: Am 25.2.1829 bittet Humboldt den russischen Finanzminister Graf Georg von Cancrin um die Genehmigung, statt eines eigenen Kochs, wie der Minister vorgeschlagen hatte, den „thätigen und gelehrten Zoologen und Botaniker (er ist sonderbar genug beides zugleich) Prof. Ehrenberg, der schon Palästina, Nubien und Abyssinien durchwandert hat, mit nach dem Ural und Tobolsk zu nehmen.“ (Im Ural und Altai. Der 2008 im Internet veröffentlichte Briefwechsel zwischen Humboldt und Johann Gottfried Ehrenberg wird bald mit 22 bisher unedierten Briefen von Ehrenbergs Hand vervollständigt, die aus dem Bestand der Sammlung Darmstädter der Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin-Preußischer Kulturbesitz stammen. Anne Jobst präsentiert und kontextualisiert in ihrem Artikel vier dieser bisher unbekannten Briefe.
