A Co(II)-imidazolate-4-amide-5-imidate based MOF, IFP-5, is synthesized by using an imidazolate anion-based novel ionic liquid as a linker precursor under solvothermal conditions. IFP-5 shows significant amounts of gas (N2, CO2, CH4 and H2) uptake capacities. IFP-5 exhibits an independent high spin Co(II) centre and antiferromagnetic coupling.
A rare example of in situ linker generation with the formation of soft porous Zn- and Co-MOFs (IFP-9 and -10, respectively) is reported. The flexible ethoxy groups of IFP-9 and -10 protrude into the 1D hexagonal channels. The gas- sorption behavior of both materials for H2, CO2 and CH4 showed wide hysteretic isotherms, typical for MOFs having a flexible substituent which can give rise to a gate effect.
The term "analysis" came into use in Spanish school grammars during the first half of the nineteenth century. Following a process of simplification still evident today, the teaching of this concept in Spain distinguished between logical analysis and grammatical analysis, i.e. the separation or the division of sentences into clauses and of clauses into their immediate constituents and, on the other hand, the study of the parts of speech. A close perusal of various grammars, however, reveals that analysis is a concept used with different meanings, which minimises the distinction between logic and grammar. The term "analysis" includes elements of scholastic grammar and also aspects of the general grammar of the Port Royal School, which was introduced in Spain rather late, as well as ideological features associated with the impact of French ideas in Spain in the early nineteenth century. This paper shall explore the different concepts of "analysis" in Elementos de gramática c astellana by Juan Manuel Calleja, Análisis lógica y gramatical de la lengua espanola by Juan Calderón and Gramática de la lengua castellana destinada al uso de los americanos by Andrés Bello.

We consider diffusion processes with a spatially varying diffusivity giving rise to anomalous diffusion. Such heterogeneous diffusion processes are analysed for the cases of exponential, power-law, and logarithmic dependencies of the diffusion coefficient on the particle position. Combining analytical approaches with stochastic simulations, we show that the functional form of the space-dependent diffusion coefficient and the initial conditions of the diffusing particles are vital for their statistical and ergodic properties. In all three cases a weak ergodicity breaking between the time and ensemble averaged mean squared displacements is observed. We also demonstrate a population splitting of the time averaged traces into fast and slow diffusers for the case of exponential variation of the diffusivity as well as a particle trapping in the case of the logarithmic diffusivity. Our analysis is complemented by the quantitative study of the space coverage, the diffusive spreading of the probability density, as well as the survival probability.

The late Cenozoic climate of East Africa is punctuated by episodes of short, alternating periods of extreme wetness and aridity, superimposed on a regime of subdued moisture availability exhibiting a long-term drying trend. These periods of extreme climate variability appear to correlate with maxima in the 400-thousand-year (kyr) component of the Earth's eccentricity cycle. Prior to 2.7 Ma the wet phases appear every 400 kyrs, whereas after 2.7 Ma, the wet phases appear every 800 kyrs, with periods of precessional-forced extreme climate variability at 2.7-2.5 Ma, 1.9-1.7 Ma, and 1.1-0.9 Ma before present. The last three major lake phases occur at the times of major global climatic transitions, such as the onset of Northern Hemisphere Glaciation (2.7-2.5 Ma), intensification of the Walker Circulation (1.9-1.7 Ma), and the Mid-Pleistocene Revolution (1.0-0.7 Ma). High-latitude forcing is required to compress the Intertropical Convergence Zone so that East Africa becomes locally sensitive to precessional forcing, resulting in rapid shifts from wet to dry conditions. These periods of extreme climate variability may have provided a catalyst for evolutionary change and driven key speciation and dispersal events amongst mammals and hominins in East Africa. Growing recognition of the importance of long-distance dispersal (LDD) of plant seeds for various ecological and evolutionary processes has led to an upsurge of research into the mechanisms underlying LDD. We summarize these findings by formulating six generalizations stating that LDD is generally more common in open terrestrial landscapes, and is typically driven by large and migratory animals, extreme meteorological phenomena, ocean currents and human transportation, each transporting a variety of seed morphologies. LDD is often associated with unusual behavior of the standard vector inferred from plant dispersal morphology, or mediated by nonstandard vectors. To advance our understanding of LDD, we advocate a vector-based research approach that identifies the significant LDD vectors and quantifies how environmental conditions modify their actions.
When we fixate our gaze on a stable object, our eyes move continuously with extremely small involuntary and autonomic movements, that even we are unaware of during their occurrence. One of the roles of these fixational eye movements is to prevent the adaptation of the visual system to continuous illumination and inhibit fading of the image. These random, small movements are restricted at long time scales so as to keep the target at the centre of the field of view. In addition, the synchronisation properties between both eyes are related to binocular coordination in order to provide stereopsis. We investigated the roles of different time scale behaviours, especially how they are expressed in the different spatial directions (vertical versus horizontal). We also tested the synchronisation between both eyes. Results show different scaling behaviour between horizontal and vertical movements. When the small ballistic movements, i.e., microsaccades, are removed, the scaling behaviour in both axes becomes similar. Our findings suggest that microsaccades enhance the persistence at short time scales mostly in the horizontal component and much less in the vertical component. We also applied the phase synchronisation decay method to study the synchronisation between six combinations of binocular fixational eye movement components. We found that the vertical-vertical components of right and left eyes are significantly more synchronised than the horizontal-horizontal components. These differences may be due to the need for continuously moving the eyes in the horizontal plane in order to match the stereoscopic image for different viewing distances.
Acid-catalyzed reaction of trifluoromethanesulfonamide with paraformaldehyde in ethyl acetate led to the formation of oxymethylated products that did not form in the reaction carried out in sulfuric acid. Following products were obtained: 5-trifluoromethylsulfonyl-1,3-dioxazinane, 3,7-bis-(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)-1,5,3,7-dioxadiazocane, and a complex of trifluoromethanesulfonamide with 2,4,8,10-tetraoxospiro[5,5]undecene, 1:1. The spiroring resulted from the cyclization of pentaerythritol under the action of formaldehyde. The pentaerythritol formed in its turn by oxymethylation of the methyl group of ethyl acetate with paraformaldehyde followed by the reduction of the COOEt group into CH2 OH by the formaldehyde.
Especially for sciences the provision of massive parallel CPU capacity is one of the most attractive features of a grid. A major challenge in a distributed, inherently dynamic grid is fault tolerance. The more resources and components involved, the more complicated and error-prone becomes the system. In a grid with potentially thousands of machines connected to each other the reliability of individual resources cannot be guaranteed. The benefit of the grid is that in case of a failure ail application may be migrated and restarted from a checkpoint file on another site. This approach requires a service infrastructure which handles the necessary activities transparently. In this article, we present Migol, a fault-tolerant and self-healing grid middleware for MPI applications. Migol is based on open standards and extends the services of the Globus toolkit to support the fault tolerance of grid applications.Further, the Migol framework itself is designed with special focus on fault tolerance. For example, Migol eplicates ritical services and uses a ring-based replication protocol to achieve data consistency. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
In an area that contains high concentrations of natural organic matter, it is expected that it plays an important role on the behavior of rare earth elements (REE), like europium, and of trivalent actinides. Competitive interactions with H+, inorganic species, major cations, e.g. Ca(II) or Mg(II), could influence these metals transport and bioavailability. Competitive experiments between cations, which can bind differently to humic substances and Eu3+,will bring an improved understanding of the competitive mechanisms. The aim of this study is to acquire data for Eu(III)/Cu(II) and Eu(III)/Ca(II) competitive binding to a sedimentary originated humic acid (Gorleben, Germany). The NICA-Donnan parameters for Ca2+, Cu2+, and Eu3+ obtained from competitive binding experiments using Ca2+ or Cu2+ ion selective electrodes were used to model time-resolved laser fluorescence spectroscopy (TRLFS) measurements. Eu3+ and Cu2+ are in direct competition for the same type of sites, whereas Ca2+ has an indirect influence through electrostatic binding.
Objective: To clarify the nature of the association between dopamine genes and smoking by examining whether genetic variability in components of the dopamine pathway could explain refined phenotypes in adolescent smoking progression. Method: Data are from an ongoing prospective study of the long-term outcome of early risk factors studied since birth. At age 15 years, 220 participants (108 males, 112 females) completed a self-report questionnaire measuring smoking behavior and were genotyped for five dopamine gene variants. Results: Smoking initiation was related to allelic variation in the dopamine D-4 receptor gene (DRD4), whereas smoking continuation and dependence showed association with the dopamine D-2 receptor gene (DRD2). Adolescents with the seven-repeat allele of the common DRD4 exon 3 polymorphism had rates of ever smoking that were significantly higher than in those with other genotypes. Once smoking started, carriers of the T allele of a single nucleotide polymorphism of DRD2 (rs4648317) reported higher rates of current smoking and scored higher on nicotine dependence than their allelic counterparts. Among current smokers, intention to quit was significantly lower in adolescents homozygous for the 10-repeat allele of the common dopamine transporter 3 untranslated region polymorphism. Conclusions: Our results provide preliminary evidence of genetic influences on different stages of smoking and suggest the importance of specific dopamine genes in smoking progression in adolescence.
Neuronal activity in area LIP is correlated with the perceived direction of ambiguous apparent motion (Z. M. Williams, J. C. Elfar, E. N. Eskandar, L. J. Toth, & J. A. Assad, 2003). Here we show that a similar correlation exists for small eye movements made during fixation. A moving dot grid with superimposed fixation point was presented through an aperture. In a motion discrimination task, unambiguous motion was compared with ambiguous motion obtained by shifting the grid by half of the dot distance. In three experiments we show that (a) microsaccadic inhibition, i.e., a drop in microsaccade frequency precedes reports of perceptual flips, (b) microsaccadic inhibition does not accompany simple response changes, and (c) the direction of microsaccades occurring before motion onset biases the subsequent perception of ambiguous motion. We conclude that microsaccades provide a signal on which perceptual judgments rely in the absence of objective disambiguating stimulus information.
The anisotropic effect of the olefinic C=C double bond has been calculated by employing the NICS (nucleus independent chemical shift) concept and visualized as an anisotropic cone by a through space NMR shielding grid. Sign and size of this spatial effect on 1H chemical shifts of protons in norbornene, exo- and endo-2-methylnorbornenes, and in three highly congested tetracyclic norbornene analogs have been compared with the experimental 1H NMR spectra as far as published. 1H NMR spectra have also been calculated at the HF/6-31G* level of theory to get a full, comparable set of proton chemical shifts. Differences between ;(1H)/ppm and the calculated anisotropic effect of the C=C double bond are discussed in terms of the steric compression that occurs in the compounds studied.
The anisotropic effect of the planar nitrate anion NO3- has been ab initio calculated employing the Nucleus- Independent Chemical Shift (NICS) concept of von Ragué Schleyer and visualized as Iso-Chemical-Shielding Surfaces (ICSSs) of various (de)shieldings. Complexation-induced shifts in the 1H NMR spectra of nitrate/metal complexes or nitrate/receptor supramolecules can be separated now into anisotropic influences of the suitably coordinated nitrate anions and effects originating from differential sources.
Large oligomeric proteins are usually thought to fold and assemble hierarchically: Domains fold and coalesce to form the subunits, and folded subunits can then associate to form the multimeric structure. We have investigated the refolding pathway of the ;-sheet protein pea seed lectin using spectroscopic and hydrodynamic techniques. In vivo, it is proteolytically processed post-translationally, so that the single-domain subunits of the initial homodimer themselves become heterodimers of intertwined fragment polypeptide chains. Despite this complex topology, mature pea seed lectin reassembles with considerable efficiency at low total protein concentration (10 ;g/mL) and low temperature (10 °C), albeit very slowly (t1/2 ; 2 days). Contrary to expectations, the primary assembly product is not the intact ;-sheet domain, but the larger fragment chains first dimerize to form the native-like subunit interface. The smaller fragment chains then associate with this preformed dimer.
Sequence learning at optimal stimulus-response mapping : evidence from a serial reaction-time task
(2008)
We propose a new version of the serial reaction time (SRT) task in which participants merely looked at the target instead of responding manually. As response locations were identical to target locations, stimulus - response compatibility was maximal in this task. We demonstrated that saccadic response times decreased during training and increased again when a new sequence was presented. It is unlikely that this effect was caused by stimulus - response (S - R) learning because bonds between (visual) stimuli and (oculomotor) responses were already well established before the experiment started. Thus, the finding shows that the building of S - R bonds is not essential for learning in the SRT task.
The first application of a pnCCD detector for X-ray scattering experiments using white synchrotron radiation at BESSY II is presented. A Cd arachidate multilayer was investigated in reflection geometry within the energy range 7 keV < E < 35 keV. At fixed angle of incidence the two-dimensional diffraction pattern containing several multilayer Bragg peaks and respective diffuse-resonant Bragg sheets were observed. Since every pixel of the detector is able to determine the energy of every incoming photon with a resolution Delta E/E similar or equal to 10(-2). a three-dimensional dataset is finally obtained. In order to achieve this energy resolution the detector was operated in the so-called single-photon- counting mode. A full dataset was evaluated taking into account all photons recorded within 10(5) detector frames at a readout rate of 200 Hz. By representing the data in reciprocal-space coordinates, it becomes obvious that this experiment with the pnCCD detector provides the same information as that obtained by combining a large number of monochromatic scattering experiments using conventional area detectors.
The tailspike protein P22 recognizes an octasaccharide derived from the O-antigen polysaccharide of Salmonella enteritidis in a shallow groove and molecular docking successfully identifies this binding region on the protein surface. Analysis by 2D 1H,1H-T-ROESY and transferred NOESY NMR experiments indicate that the bound octasaccharide ligand has a conformation similar to that observed in solution. The results from a saturation transfer difference NMR experiment show that a large number of protons in the octasaccharide are in close contact with the protein as a result of binding. A comparison of the crystal structure of the complex and a molecular dynamics simulation of the octasaccharide with explicit water molecules suggest that only minor conformational changes are needed upon binding to the tailspike protein.
Sf6 belongs to the Podoviridae family of temperate bacteriophages that infect gram-negative bacteria by insertion of their double-stranded DNA. They attach to their hosts specifically via their tailspike proteins. The 1.25 Å crystal structure of Shigella phage Sf6 tailspike protein (Sf6 TSP) reveals a conserved architecture with a central, right-handed ; helix. In the trimer of Sf6 TSP, the parallel ; helices form a left-handed, coiled;; coil with a pitch of 340 Å. The C-terminal domain consists of a ; sandwich reminiscent of viral capsid proteins. Further crystallographic and biochemical analyses show a Shigella cell wall O-antigen fragment to bind to an endorhamnosidase active site located between two ;-helix subunits each anchoring one catalytic carboxylate. The functionally and structurally related bacteriophage, P22 TSP, lacks sequence identity with Sf6 TSP and has its active sites on single subunits. Sf6 TSP may serve as an example for the evolution of different host specificities on a similar general architecture.
Conformational changes associated with the assembly of recombinant ;2-microglobulin in vitro under acidic conditions were investigated using infrared spectroscopy and static and dynamic light scattering. In parallel, the morphology of the different aggregated species obtained under defined conditions was characterized by electron microscopy. The initial salt-induced aggregate form of ;2-microglobulin, composed of small oligomers (dimers to tetramers), revealed the presence of ;-strands organized in an intramolecular-like fashion. Further particle growth was accompanied by the formation of intermolecular ;-sheet structure and led to short curved forms. An increase in temperature by only 25 °C was able to disaggregate these assemblies, followed by the formation of longer filamentous structures. In contrast, a rise in temperature up to 100 °C was associated with a reorganization of the short curved forms at the level of secondary structure and the state of assembly, leading to a species with a characteristic infrared spectrum different from those of all the other aggregates observed before, suggesting a unique overall structure. The infrared spectral features of this species were nearly identical to those of ;2-microglobulin assemblies formed at low ionic strength with agitation, indicating the presence of fibrils, which was confirmed by electron microscopy. The observed spectroscopic changes suggest that the heat-triggered conversion of the short curved assemblies into fibrils involves a reorganization of the ;-strands from an antiparallel arrangement to a parallel arrangement, with the latter being characteristic of amyloid fibrils of ;2-microglobulin.
Bacteriophage HK620 infects Escherichia coli H and is closely related to Shigella phage Sf6 and Salmonella phage P22. All three Podoviridae recognize and cleave their respective host cell receptor polysaccharide by homotrimeric tailspike proteins. The three proteins exhibit high sequence identity in the 110 residues of their N-terminal particle- binding domains, but no apparent sequence similarity in their major, receptor-binding parts. We have biochemically characterized the receptor-binding part of HK620 tailspike and determined its crystal structure to 1.38 Å resolution. Its major domain is a right-handed parallel ;-helix, as in Sf6 and P22 tailspikes. HK620 tailspike has endo-N- acetylglucosaminidase activity and produces hexasaccharides of an O18A1-type O-antigen. As indicated by the structure of a hexasaccharide complex determined at 1.6 Å resolution, the endoglycosidase-active sites are located intramolecularly, as in P22, and not between subunits, as in Sf6 tailspike. In contrast, the extreme C-terminal domain of HK620 tailspike forms a ;-sandwich, as in Sf6 and unlike P22 tailspike. Despite the different folds, structure-based sequence alignments of the C-termini reveal motifs conserved between the three proteins. We propose that the tailspike genes of P22, Sf6 and HK620 have a common precursor and are not mosaics of unrelated gene fragments.
We have developed a microfluidic mixer optimized for rapid measurements of protein folding kinetics using synchrotron radiation circular dichroism (SRCD) spectroscopy. The combination of fabrication in fused silica and synchrotron radiation allows measurements at wavelengths below 220 nm, the typical limit of commercial instrumentation. At these wavelengths, the discrimination between the different types of protein secondary structure increases sharply. The device was optimized for rapid mixing at moderate sample consumption by employing a serpentine channel design, resulting in a dead time of less than 200 ;s. Here, we discuss the design and fabrication of the mixer and quantify the mixing efficiency using wide-field and confocal epi-fluorescence microscopy. We demonstrate the performance of the device in SRCD measurements of the folding kinetics of cytochrome c, a small, fast-folding protein. Our results show that the combination of SRCD with microfluidic mixing opens new possibilities for investigating rapid conformational changes in biological macromolecules that have previously been inaccessible.
In this paper we report the results of an elicited imitation task on dative case marking in non-canonical double object constructions with 22 German children (3;9-6;8). The aim was to test the proficiency of the children's grammar and to see which strategies they use to produce ditransitive sentences in which the direct object precedes the indirect object. The analysis of the children's utterances/imitations shows that the animacy of the direct object affects the overt dative case marking of the indirect object. Children made more errors repeating dative case marking when the direct object was inanimate, i.e., they produced the accusative case on the indirect object (non-adult-like). When both objects were animate, children correctly produced the dative case on the indirect object. We describe and account for these performance strategies of the children in the framework of Optimality Theory. Assuming that the same universal constraints are at work as in the adult grammar, the difference between adults and children lies in the constraint ranking. We focus on a prominent pattern found in children's performance, which is absent (or rather oppressed) in the corresponding adult performance, and show that one and the same grammar accounts for both (in the sense of "strong continuity"). Efficient triplet exciton emission has allowed improved operation of organic light-emitting diodes (LEDs). To enhance the device performance, it is necessary to understand what governs the motion of triplet excitons through the organic semiconductor. Here, we have investigated triplet diffusion using a model compound that has weak energetic disorder. The Dexter-type triplet energy transfer is found to be thermally activated down to a transition temperature T- T, below which the transfer rate is only weakly temperature dependent. We show that above the transition temperature, Dexter energy transfer can be described within the framework of Marcus theory. We suggest that below T-T, the nature of the transfer changes from phonon-assisted hopping to quantum-mechanical tunneling. The lower electron-phonon coupling and higher electronic coupling in the polymer compared to the monomer results in an enhanced triplet diffusion rate.
Increasing production activities have been observed in many EU member states since the EU Commission sent a clear signal establishing and supporting the bioenergy industry. This article discusses current sector developments and therewith evolving biofuel value chain activities and management requirements by means of two German biofuel processing firms. Usually, the processing company can be regarded as the initiator of the regional value chains. In order to safeguard the high initial investments and secure efficient supply, the processing company relies on contract farming or profit participation rights rather than spot market interactions. In addition to discussing that point, this paper also explores opportunities and threats for the suppliers of raw materials as well as for the processors.
In this microreview we describe the principle of Forster resonance energy transfer (FRET) occurring between closely spaced energy-donor and -acceptor molecules. The theoretical treatment is depicted in relation with the data extractable from spectroscopic measurements. We present the specific case of semiconductor nanocrystals (or quantum dots QDs) as energy donors in FRET experiments and a particular emphasis is put on the specific advantages of these fluorophores with regard to both their exceptional photophysical properties and their nanoscopic morphology. In a following section, the special attributes of luminescent lanthanide complexes (LLCs) are outlined with illustrations of properties such as their characteristic emission spectra, long-lived luminescence, and large "Stokes shift". Finally, the successful combination of LLCs and QDs in FRET experiments is demonstrated, showing the unrivaled benefits of this singular marriage, opening doors for energy transfer at very large distances and excellent sensitivity of detection within the frame of time-resolved fluoroimmunoassays. A chemotaxonomic evaluation using hplc profiling was undertaken to resolve the infrageneric and intergeneric affinities of over 150 strains of Xylariaceae. Daldinia placentiformis, Hypoxylon nicaraguense, H. polyporus, and Phylacia sagrana were found to contain 8-methoxy-1-naphthol, which is apparently absent in Annulohypoxylon, Hypoxylon, and related genera with bipartite stromata. D. placentiformis and other species of Daldinia and Entonaema produced this naphthol, 5-hydroxy-2-methylchromone, isosclerone derivatives, and 'AB-5046' phytotoxins. Phylacia sagrana differed from most Daldinia spp., except for D. caldariorum, by producing eutypine derivatives in addition to the above compounds. indolylquinones were observed in H. nicaraguense and H. polyporus. Isosclerones were also identified in the A. multiforme complex, but Hypoxylon and other Annulohypoxylon and most Hypoxylon spp. studied Annulohypoxylon spp. contained S-methylmellein as the major metabolite of their cultures. Based on the occurrence of the above metabolites, further mellein-type dihydroisocoumarins, teleomorphic and anamorphic Xylariaceae with Nodulisporium-like anamorphs ('Hypoxyloideae') were divided into various chemotypes. A comparison of their 5.8S/ ITS nuc-rDNA sequences agreed in some important aspects with the above results: H. nicaraguense and H. polyporus appeared basal to a clade comprising Daldinia, Entonaema, and Ph. sagrana. The latter species appeared allied to D. caldariorum, but was distantly related to Pyrenomyxa morganii and Hypoxylon s. str. (C) 2007 The British Mycological Society. Published by Elsevier Ltd.
