Der Vergleich mit Humboldts Tagebüchern bietet Aufschlüsse über die für Humboldt typische Arbeitsweise und die Wege seines Wissenserwerbs. Seine eigenen Beobachtungen während des Aufenthaltes in Mexiko sind ergänzt durch persönliche Kontakte vor Ort, durch Literatur- und Archivstudien in Mexiko und nach der Rückkehr in europäischen Archiven. So hat er beispielsweise die Pyramiden von Teotihuacan nicht besucht, aber die Beschreibung aus einem Brief von Juan José de Oteyza, den er am Real Seminario de Minería in Mexiko-Stadt kennengelernt hatte, in seine Publikation aufgenommen. Auch einzelne Tafeln stellen mexikanische Altertümer dar, die Humboldt nicht selbst besichtigt hat. Im Vortrag werden einige Quellen der „Vues des Cordillères“ aus Humboldts Tagebüchern vorgestellt, wie z. B. Beschreibungen seiner Exkursionen in Mexiko aus den von der Alexander-von-Humboldt-Forschungsstelle publizierten Bänden und bisher unedierte Notizen seiner Studien im Archiv des Vatikans im Sommer 1805.
Ausgehend von O. Ettes Analyse des Begriffs Humboltian writing wird unter Betonung des bibliographischen Hintergrunds die vernetzte Struktur des amerikanischen Reisewerks Alexander von Humboldts dargestellt. Die Komplexität seines Schreibens zeigt sich in mehreren Dimensionen: disziplinäre Aufsplittung, Hypertextstruktur der einzelnen Texte selbst, Multilingualität, Vernetzung mit anderen Werken Humboldts und seinem epistolarischen Nachlaß, sein wissenschaftliches Netzwerk in der scientific community. Diese Struktur wird bei einer rein linearen Lesart (die ein normales Buch nur zuläßt) nicht vollständig wahrgenommen, zumal es bisher keine mit Registern versehene Neuedition seines Reisewerks gibt, so daß eine digitale Bibliothek ein adäquates Medium für die Darstellung des Humboldtschen Schreibstils und gleichzeitig der für ihn typischen Organisation des Wissens sein könnte.
Als Humboldt sein 1804 geschriebenes Tagebuch seiner Reise von Mexico City nach Veracruz 1853 nochmals sichtete, schrieb er an den Rand einer Passage die kritischen Worte “Alte neptunistische Verrücktheiten!” Dieser Text und seine spätere Randbemerkung beweisen nun endgültig, daß Humboldt noch gegen Ende seiner Amerikareise Neptunist war, was von Forschern oft bezweifelt worden war. Seltsamerweise hat Humboldt dieses Manuskript nicht mit in die Tagebücher aufgenommen, als er sie gegen Ende seines Lebens in 9 Hefte neu binden ließ. Der Nachlaß Humboldts galt zusammen mit der Autographensammlung der Staatsbibliothek Berlin seit der Auslagerung im zweiten Weltkrieg als verschollen. Er befindet sich heute in Krakau, wo ich diesen Tagebuchteil vor einiger Zeit entdeckte, das nun eine wertvolle Ergänzung zur Edition der Tagebücher durch Margot Faak bildet. Der folgende Text stellt diesen Tagebuchteil vor und zeigt die Entwicklung einzelner Ansichten Humboldts in naturwissenschaftlichen Disziplinen, die z. T. paradigmatische Wandel von Theorien - beispielsweise in der Geologie - anzeigen.

Der Nachlaß Humboldts in Krakau enthält die von Humboldt über Mexiko und Kuba gesammelten Materialien. Darunter befindet sich ein Manuskript mit der Beschreibung der Pyramidenanlage von Teotihuacan von Juan José de Oteyza, den Humboldt am Real Seminario de Minería in Mexiko-Stadt kennengelernt hatte. Alexander von Humboldt selbst hat diese Pyramidenanlage nicht besichtigt. In derartigen Fällen hat er sein weitreichendes Informationsnetz zur Ergänzung seiner eigenen Beobachtungen in den Tagebüchern genutzt, wie der Vergleich des Manuskriptes von Oteyza mit dem später gedruckten Text Humboldts anschaulich macht.

Durch die Arbeit an Editionen wird manches Detail in der historischen und biographischen Forschung entdeckt. Hier wird am Beispiel eines Briefes von A. v. Humboldt an J. G. v. Cotta ein spezielles Editionsproblem dargelegt: die Korrektur einer Fehldatierung. Die für die Begründung notwendigen Recherchen erbrachten Neuigkeiten über eine Begegnung zwischen C. Ritter und A. v. Humboldt 1824 in Paris, über einige Themen, die Humboldt gerade bearbeitete, und über seine Stellung am französischen Hof.Durch die Arbeit an Editionen wird manches Detail in der historischen und biographischen Forschung entdeckt. Humboldts Hauptinteresse während seiner Amerikareise galt den Geowissenschaften, wie seine später publizierten geographischen Folioatlanten und eine Vielzahl von Zeichnungen in seinen Tagebüchern beweisen. Im folgenden sollen drei fast unbekannte Beispiele zeigen, wie Humboldt das geologische und geographische Wissen von Venezuela bereichert hat: 1. eine Profilkarte der Küste von Venezuela. Dieses Ergebnis der Amerikareise sandte Humboldt erst 1853 an den Herausgeber Julius Ewald, der es in seinem bedeutenden geologischen Journal publizierte; 2. Humboldts Manuskriptkarte vom Orinoco, die bis jetzt unpubliziert blieb; 3. eine geographische Karte (publiziert 1812) des Flusses Casiquiare, der den Orinoco und den Rio Negro verbindet. Humboldt untersuchte den Casiquiare während seiner Orinocoreise, um diese Verbindung (damals von größtem ökonomischen Interesse) und die Gabelteilung des Orinoco (eines der wichtigsten geographischen Ergebnisse seiner Amerikareise) nachzuweisen.
Friedrich Wilhelm IV. wollte den preußischen Staat nach seiner Thronbesteigung auch auf den Gebieten der Kultur und Wissenschaft modernisieren. Bedeutende Persönlichkeiten wurden nach Berlin geholt. In vielen dieser Berufungsangelegenheiten kam Alexander von Humboldts Einfluss zum Tragen. Zu den Koryphäen, die von Bayern nach Preußen gelockt wurden, gehörte auch der Dichter und Orientalist Friedrich Rückert. Ulrike Leitner veranschaulicht in Ihrem Aufsatz Rückerts Berufung nach Berlin und präsentiert in diesem Kontext zwei Briefe.
