In dem vorliegenden Beitrag geht der Verfasser von seinen Gesprächen aus, die er mit seinem Kollegen Michaeler in der Zeit von 1976 bis 1985 an der Universidad Incca de Colombia führen konnte. Dabei bezieht er die ihm – von Michaeler vor seinem Tod – übergebenen biografischen Daten mit ein. Insgesamt sollen die Ausführungen zum Weiterdenken anregen. Der Beitrag geht von der vielfältigen klimatischen und archäologischen Landschaft Kolumbiens aus und verbindet dies mit der damaligen Wissenschaftskonzeption an der Universidad Incca de Colombia. In diesem Kontext wird u. a. auf das Werk von Ernst Bloch „Das Prinzip Hoffnung“ und die Arbeit von Hans Jonas „Das Prinzip Verantwortung“ Bezug genommen. Für Michaeler waren die Werke der Brüder Humboldt, die Schrift Kants „Zum ewigen Frieden“, die Dialektik Hegels und die Gesellschaftstheorie von Marx in der Universitätsausbildung unverzichtbar.

In dem Beitrag »Identität und Differenz - Goethes Faust und Alexander von Humboldt« wird der Frage nachgegangen, wie viel Faust in Humboldt enthalten und in welcher Weise Goethes Faust zu Alexander von Humboldt in Beziehung zu setzen ist. Hierbei steht der Zusammenhang von Tätigkeit, Erkenntnis und Vision, sowie das Verhältnis zwischen Mensch und Natur im Mittelpunkt der Betrachtung. Goethe und Humboldt waren Persönlichkeiten der Aufklärung. Ihre Ideen und Visionen weisen uns heute darauf hin, dass die Moderne ein unvollständiges Projekt ist. In Goethes Faust wird die Frage nach dem Wesen des Menschen gestellt, denn in jedem Menschen wirkt das faustische und mephistophelische Prinzip. Bei Humboldt wirkten diese Prinzipien u.a. als Triebkraft größeren Schaffens und höherer Erkenntnisgewinnung. Wenn auch Faust in der Wette mit Mephisto nicht gescheitert ist, so ist er aber auch nicht der Gewinner. Humboldt hätte die Wette jedoch gewonnen. In Anbetracht globaler ökologischer Krisen und regionaler Konflikte besitzt die Thematik von Goethes Faust und Alexander von Humboldt eine erstaunliche Aktualität.

Obwohl Johann Gottfried Herder (1744-1803) im Unterschied zu Alexander von Humboldt nie in Lateinamerika war, regte er in seinen Arbeiten das lateinamerikanische und europäische Bewusstsein bei der Wahrnehmung anderer Kulturen an. Ähnlich der amerikanischen Forschungsreise Alexander von Humboldts (1799-1804), die zu einer verstärkten Aufnahme und Wirkung des philosophischen Denkens im europäischen und deutschsprachigen Kulturraum führte, trugen Herders Ideen über den Zusammenhang zwischen Mensch, Natur, Kultur und Tradition zur lateinamerikanischen Rezeption und Transformation europäischen Denkens bei und zur Vermittlung humanistischer Wertorientierungen. In den Darlegungen werden in drei Schritten folgende Aspekte erörtert. Erstens: Worin besteht das Wesen des Literatur- und Philosophiebegriffs bei Herder? Zweitens: Welche Konsequenzen ergeben sich daraus für seine Hermeneutik? Und drittens: Worin besteht die Aktualität des sozialkritischen Denkens Herders?
