Die Entstehung der modernen britischen Nachrichtendienstarchitektur fiel in die erste Hälfte des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts. Zeitgleich erfuhr die britische Gesellschaft eine nie dagewesene Demokratisierung. Die Arbeit versucht darzulegen, wie auch vermeintlich arkane Bereiche staatlichen Handelns in öffentliche Aushandlungsprozesse eingebettet sind und rekonstruiert deshalb erstmals systematisch öffentliche und fachöffentliche Diskurse über Nachrichtendienste Großbritanniens im Zeitalter der Weltkriege.
Der historische Spielfilm zählt zu den populärsten Formen geschichtskultureller Artikulation. Als solche ist er Gegenstand kontroverser Diskussionen über einen angemessenen didaktischen Umgang. Vor diesem Hintergrund ist es das Ziel der vorliegenden Arbeit, ein integratives, theoretisch und empirisch abgesichertes Analysemodell zu entwickeln, das nach den Tiefenstrukturen historischen Erzählens im Medium des Spielfilms fragt und dabei unterschiedliche Erscheinungsformen historischer Spielfilme berücksichtigt. Die Überlegungen bewegen sich deshalb in einem interdisziplinären Spannungsfeld von Theorien zum historischen Erzählen und Konzepten der Literatur- und Filmwissenschaft. Die Diskussion und Synthese dieser unterschiedlichen Konzepte geht dabei – auf der Grundlage einer großen Materialbasis – vom Gegenstand aus und ist induktiv angelegt. Als Orientierung für die praktische Arbeit werden am Ende der einzelnen Kapitel Toolkits entwickelt, die zu einer vertieften Auseinandersetzung mit historischen Spielfilmen anregen sollen.
Ärgerliche Wirtshäuser, ergötzliche Häfen, empfindsame Kerker: Räume und Emotionen bilden emotionale Topografien, mit deren Hilfe sich die Akteure die Welt als Lebenswelt ordnen und aneignen. Der Autor untersucht den Zusammenhang zwischen Bewegung in frühneuzeitlichen Räumen und der emotionalen Bewegtheit der Akteure. Er kommt zu dem Schluss, dass Emotionen und Räume dabei nicht nur passiv erlebt, sondern aktiv vollzogen werden. Denn es handelt sich bei beiden um wechselseitig verbundene Handlungsanweisungen, die in Regeln, Topoi und Vorstellungen münden. Die sich ergebenden Verflechtungen nehmen verschiedene Formen an, die in kulturell, sozial und individuell bedingten emotionalen Topografien kulminieren, also in Anordnungen von Räumen und zugehörigen Emotionen. In dieser Struktur liegen somit Erklärungen für das Verhalten der Akteure verborgen.
Gegenstand der Arbeit sind die protestantischen Landprediger der Kurmark Brandenburg in der zweiten Hälfte des 18. Jahrhunderts. Die Landprediger standen zu dieser Zeit in schlechtem Ruf, indem sie von der gebildeten Öffentlichkeit für "verbauert" gehalten wurden. Sie versuchten ihre Zugehörigkeit zum aufgeklärten Bürgertum unter Beweis zu stellen, nicht zuletzt indem sie "Volksaufklärung" betrieben. Auf der Grundlage breiten archivalischen Materials werden die kulturellen, sozialen und ökonomischen Umstände beleuchtet, unter denen die Landprediger als Träger der Volksaufklärung agierten. In Rede stehen die Einkünfte, die Ausbildung in der Schule und an der Universität zu Halle/Saale, Herkunft und Karrierewege, das Kirchenpatronat, das Verhältnis zum preußischen Staat, der Pfarrer in der Sicht der Dorfgemeinde, der Pfarrer als Volksaufklärer.
Zu Seiner Majestät allerhöchstem Interesse als titelgebendem Zitat bekannten sich die zeitgenössischen Amtsträger in ihrer Beeidigung als grundlegende Maxime des durch den König verkörperten werdenden preussischen Staates.Die Domänenpolitik Friedrich Wilhelms I., dem zweiten preussischen König, war die wesentliche Voraussetzung für die folgende Entwicklung Preussens von einer Regionalmacht im Heiligen Römischen Reich zu einer europäischen Grossmacht. Ohne nennenswerte Rohstoffe und handwerkliche Traditionen, agrarisch geprägt und ganz dem merkantilistischen Wirtschaftsmodell und seiner kameralistischen Methodik verhaftet, war der Ausbau und die Intensivierung der landesherrlichen Gutswirtschaft der für Preussen verheissungsvollste Weg zur Erwirtschaftung der Mittel, die es zum Schuldenabbau, dem Aufbau einer starken Militärmacht und Anhäufung eines Staatsschatzes befähigte. Erreicht wurde dies durch konsequente Einnahmen- und Ausgabenkontrolle und die Schaffung eines effizienten Verwaltungsapparates mit detaillierten Vorschriften, was knapp einhundert Jahre Bestand behalten sollte und bis zu nahezu 50 Prozent der Staatseinnahmen hervorbrachte. Das friderizianische Preussen wäre ohne die Leistungen Friedrich Wilhelms I. nicht möglich gewesen.Der vorliegende Band stellt diese Entwicklung mit einer Fülle von Quellenmaterial und dessen Auswertungen sowie einem umfangreichen Anhang unter Beweis. Der allein 22seitige Personenindex mit über 1.300 Verweisen und 103 Kurzbiogra-fien der kurmärkischen Kammerräte machen deutlich, wer hinter den Leistungen dieser Epoche stand.
Der Autor wertet das Verwaltungsschriftgut in Brandenburg-Preußen und Kurhannover aus dem 18. Jahrhundert wissenschaftlich und in Teilen erstmalig aus. Der Fokus liegt dabei auf den vielen Akteuren, denn die Wirtschaftspolitik im 18. Jahrhundert ging im Wesentlichen von Beschwerden und Bitten der Untertanen aus. Wirtschaftspolitische Maßnahmen wie Fabrikgründungen, Monopole, Privilegien, Ein- und Ausfuhrverbote oder Zölle wurden im Wechselspiel von der Verwaltung mit den jeweils Betroffenen ausgehandelt. Von Diest stellt dabei die in der Forschung bisher weitverbreitete wirtschaftspolitische Theorie des Merkantilismus, nach der alle Wirtschaftskraft eines Staates auf einen zentral vom Monarchen vorgegebenen Plan ausgerichtet war, auf die Probe.
