Anisotropic edge problems
(2002)
We investigate elliptic pseudodifferential operators which degenerate in an anisotropic way on a submanifold of arbitrary codimension. To find Fredholm problems for such operators we adjoint to them boundary and coboundary conditions on the submanifold. The algebra obtained this way is a far reaching generalisation of Boutet de Monvel's algebra of boundary value problems with transmission property. We construct left and right regularisers and prove theorems on hypoellipticity and local solvability.
In this paper, we discuss the viscosity solutions of the weakly coupled systems of fully nonlinear second order degenerate parabolic equations and their Cauchy-Dirichlet problem. We prove the existence, uniqueness and continuity of viscosity solution by combining Perron's method with the technique of coupled solutions. The results here generalize those in [2] and [3].
We construct algebras of Volterra pseudodifferential operators that contain, in particular, the inverses of the most natural classical systems of parabolic boundary value problems of general form. Parabolicity is determined by the invertibility of the principal symbols, and as a result is equivalent to the invertibility of the operators within the calculus. Existence, uniqueness, regularity, and asymptotics of solutions as t → ∞ are consquences of the mapping properties of the operators in exponentially weighted Sobolev spaces and subspaces with asymptotics. An important aspect of this work is that the microlocal and global kernel structure of the inverse operator (solution operator) of a parabolic boundary value problem for large times is clarified. Moreover, our approach naturally yields qualitative pertubation results for the solvability theory of parabolic boundary value problems. To achieve these results, we assign t = ∞ the meaning of a conical point and treat the operators as totally characteristic pseudodifferential boundary value problems.
Relative elliptic theory
(2002)
This paper is a survey of relative elliptic theory (i.e. elliptic theory in the category of smooth embeddings), closely related to the Sobolev problem, first studied by Sternin in the 1960s. We consider both analytic aspects to the theory (the structure of the algebra of morphismus, ellipticity, Fredholm property) and topological aspects (index formulas and Riemann-Roch theorems). We also study the algebra of Green operators arising as a subalgebra of the algebra of morphisms.
The genus-dependence of multi-loop superstring ams is estimated at large orders in perturbation theory using the super-Schottky group parameterization of supermoduli space. Restriction of the integration region to a subset of supermoduli space and a single fundamental domain of the super-modular group suggests an exponential dependence on the genus. Upper bounds for these estimates are obtained for arbitrary N-point superstring scattering amplitudes and are shown to be consistent with exact results obtained for special type II string amplitudes for orbifold or Calabi-Yau compactifications. The genus-dependence is then obtained by considering the effect of the remaining contribution to the superstring amplitudes after the coefficients of the formally divergent parts of the integrals vanish as a result of a sum over spin structures. The introduction of supersymmetry therefore leads to the elimination of large-order divergences in string pertubation theory, a result which is based only on the supersymmetric generalization of the polyakov measure and not the gauge group of the string model.
We study an elliptic differential operator on a manifold with conical singularities, acting as an unbounded operator on a weighted Lp-space. Under suitable conditions we show that the resolvent (λ - A )-¹ exists in a sector of the complex plane and decays like 1/|λ| as |λ| -> ∞. Moreover, we determine the structure of the resolvent with enough precision to guarantee existence and boundedness of imaginary powers of A. As an application we treat the Laplace-Beltrami operator for a metric with striaght conical degeneracy and establish maximal regularity for the Cauchy problem u - Δu = f, u(0) = 0.
The classical Lefschetz fixed point formula expresses the number of fixed points of a continuous map f : M -> M in terms of the transformation induced by f on the cohomology of M. In 1966 Atiyah and Bott extended this formula to elliptic complexes over a compact closed manifold. In particular, they presented a holomorphic Lefschtz formula for compact complex manifolds without boundary, a result, in the framework of algebraic geometry due to Eichler (1957) for holomorphic curves. On compact complex manifolds with boundary the Dolbeault complex is not elliptic, hence the Atiyah-Bott theory is no longer applicable. To get rid of the difficulties related to the boundary behaviour of the Dolbeault cohomology, Donelli and Fefferman (1986) derived a fixed point formula for the Bergman metric. The purpose of this paper is to present a holomorphic Lefschtz formula on a compact complex manifold with boundary

During his American expedition Humboldt grappled intensively with the iniquities of colonialism. In the year 1803, for example, he noted "that the idea of a colony is itself an immoral idea, this idea of a land which is obliged to pay dues to another country." The colonial powers, wrote Humboldt, support intolerance, repression and slavery. However, he did not express his criticism in public during the expedition but entrusted it only to good friends and his diary. The lecture treats Humboldt's political stance during the expedition, based on human rights and his communicative role as a research traveller who, having returned to Europe, made his criticism public. Central to the lecture are examples of Humboldt's criticism of representatives of the colonial system. These make clear which important impulses the researcher gave to the independence movement and to the politicians of the young American states.
Significant seasonal variation in size at settlement has been observed in newly settled larvae of Dreissena polymorpha in Lake Constance. Diet quality, which varies temporally and spatially in freshwater habitats, has been suggested as a significant factor influencing life history and development of freshwater invertebrates. Accordingly, experiments were conducted with field-collected larvae to test the hypothesis that diet quality can determine planktonic larval growth rates, size at settlement and subsequent post-metamorphic growth rates. Larvae were fed one of two diets or starved. One diet was composed of cyanobacterial cells which are deficient in polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), and the other was a mixed diet rich in PUFAs. Freshly metamorphosed animals from the starvation treatment had a carbon content per individual 70% lower than that of larvae fed the mixed diet. This apparent exhaustion of larval internal reserves resulted in a 50% reduction of the postmetamorphic growth rates. Growth was also reduced in animals previously fed the cyanobacterial diet. Hence, low food quantity or low food quality during the larval stage of D. polymorpha lead to irreversible effects for postmetamorphic animals, and is related to inferior competitive abilities.
Combined structural and magnetotelluric investigation across the West Fault Zone in northern Chile
(2002)
The characterisation of the internal architecture of large-scale fault zones is usually restricted to the outcrop-based investigation of fault-related structural damage on the Earth's surface. A method to obtain information on the downward continuation of a fault is to image the subsurface electrical conductivity structure. This work deals with such a combined investigation of a segment of the West Fault, which itself is a part of the more than 2000 km long trench-linked Precordilleran Fault System in the northern Chilean Andes. Activity on the fault system lasted from Eocene to Quaternary times. In the working area (22°04'S, 68°53'W), the West Fault exhibits a clearly defined surface trace with a constant strike over many tens of kilometers. Outcrop condition and morphology of the study area allow ideally for a combination of structural geology investigation and magnetotelluric (MT) / geomagnetic depth sounding (GDS) experiments. The aim was to achieve an understanding of the correlation of the two methods and to obtain a comprehensive view of the West Fault's internal architecture. Fault-related brittle damage elements (minor faults and slip-surfaces with or without striation) record prevalent strike-slip deformation on subvertically oriented shear planes. Dextral and sinistral slip events occurred within the fault zone and indicate reactivation of the fault system. Youngest deformation increments mapped in the working area are extensional and the findings suggest a different orientation of the extension axes on either side of the fault. Damage element density increases with approach to the fault trace and marks an approximately 1000 m wide damage zone around the fault. A region of profound alteration and comminution of rocks, about 400 m wide, is centered in the damage zone. Damage elements in this central part are predominantly dipping steeply towards the east (70-80°). Within the same study area, the electrical conductivity image of the subsurface was measured along a 4 km long MT/GDS profile. This main profile trends perpendicular to the West Fault trace. The MT stations of the central 2 km were 100 m apart from each other. A second profile with 300 m site spacing and 9 recording sites crosses the fault a few kilometers away from the main study area. Data were recorded in the frequency range from 1000 Hz to 0.001 Hz with four real time instruments S.P.A.M. MkIII. The GDS data reveal the fault zone for both profiles at frequencies above 1 Hz. Induction arrows indicate a zone of enhanced conductivity several hundred meters wide, that aligns along the WF strike and lies mainly on the eastern side of the surface trace. A dimensionality analysis of the MT data justifies a two dimensional model approximation of the data for the frequency range from 1000 Hz to 0.1 Hz. For this frequency range a regional geoelectric strike parallel to the West Fault trace could be recovered. The data subset allows for a resolution of the conductivity structure of the uppermost crust down to at least 5 km. Modelling of the MT data is based on an inversion algorithm developed by Mackie et al. (1997). The features of the resulting resistivity models are tested for their robustness using empirical sensitivity studies. This involves variation of the properties (geometry, conductivity) of the anomalies, the subsequent calculation of forward or constrained inversion models and check for consistency of the obtained model results with the data. A fault zone conductor is resolved on both MT profiles. The zones of enhanced conductivity are located to the east of the West Fault surface trace. On the dense MT profile, the conductive zone is confined to a width of about 300 m and the anomaly exhibits a steep dip towards the east (about 70°). Modelling implies that the conductivity increase reaches to a depth of at least 1100 m and indicates a depth extent of less than 2000 m. Further conductive features are imaged but their geometry is less well constrained. The fault zone conductors of both MT profiles coincide in position with the alteration zone. For the dense profile, the dip of the conductive anomaly and the dip of the damage elements of the central part of the fault zone correlate. This suggests that the electrical conductivity enhancement is causally related to a mesh of minor faults and fractures, which is a likely pathway for fluids. The interconnected rock-porosity that is necessary to explain the observed conductivity enhancement by means of fluids is estimated on the basis of the salinity of several ground water samples (Archie's Law). The deeper the source of the water sample, the more saline it is due to longer exposure to fluid-rock interaction and the lower is the fluid's resistivity. A rock porosity in the range of 0.8% - 4% would be required at a depth of 200 m. That indicates that fluids penetrating the damaged fault zone from close to the surface are sufficient to explain the conductivity anomalies. This is as well supported by the preserved geochemical signature of rock samples in the alteration zone. Late stage alteration processes were active in a low temperature regime (<95°C) and the involvement of ascending brines from greater depth is not indicated. The limited depth extent of the fault zone conductors is a likely result of sealing and cementation of the fault fracture mesh due to dissolution and precipitation of minerals at greater depth and increased temperature. Comparison of the results of the apparently inactive West Fault with published studies on the electrical conductivity structure of the currently active San Andreas Fault, suggests that the depth extent and conductivity of the fault zone conductor may be correlated to fault activity. Ongoing deformation will keep the fault/fracture mesh permeable for fluids and impede cementation and sealing of fluid pathways.
