El paso de Alexander von Humboldt por Cuba en 1801 y en 1804, devino en un acontecimiento trascendental para la ciencia y la historiografía de la Mayor de las Antillas. Su estancia le permitió recopilar información, hacer experimentos científicos y entrar en contacto con la realidad de la colonia española en un momento de grandes cambios para su destino, cuando se inicia el despegue definitivo de la plantación esclavista, que la convirtió en el principal productor y exportador de azúcar y por un tiempo de café. El trabajo que se presenta analiza las impresiones críticas de Humboldt sobre los cambios económico-sociales y ambientales de la época y, en especial, el legado que sus opiniones y su obra representaron para el ambientalismo cubano desde el siglo XIX hasta el establecimiento, en 1996, del Parque Nacional que lleva su nombre, uno de los ecosistemas montañosos de mayor riqueza y endemismo en el planeta, declarado en 2001 por la UNESCO Patrimonio de la Humanidad.
No tenemos parecidas noticias sobre el recuerdo local en cuanto a Humboldt como lo tenemos en el caso de las cartas de Ferdinand Bellermann en Venezuela. Lo que si tenemos son las fuentes en Kraków que demuestran el gran impacto de Humboldt entre la élite política y económica en la Habana (1800-1830) y a la vez sus redes de comunicación. En la historia intelectual de Cuba el nombre de Humboldt esta intimamente ligado con el cosmopolitismo de las élites hispano-cubanas (Arango, conde Villanueva, Sagra, Saco) como con el concepto de la nación cubana (Luz y Caballero, Vidal Morales y Morales, Leuchsenring, Ortiz, Barnet y otros). Los últimos ganaron la hegemonía discursiva e hicieron a Humboldt “suyo” (“segundo descubridor de Cuba”), aunque este Humboldt eurocriollo para ellos también tenía la función de impedir cambios fundamentales en el sistema de esclavitud o comportamiento frente a los problemas de la post-emancipación en Cuba.
Además de proponer una primera doble síntesis: la de la geografía de las plantas y la crítica al colonialismo, durante su estadía en el territorio de la Audiencia de Quito (actual Ecuador), el “espíritu sensible y contemplativo” de Alexander von Humboldt muestra ya su preocupación por “dar a la naturaleza contornos fijos y todo el rigor de la ciencia” (Cosmos). El presente estudio buscará ofrecer un análisis y poner al día los datos antropológicos, históricos y geográficos sobre las Vues des Cordillères et Monumens des Peuples Indigènes de l’Amérique que se refieren a las comarcas relativas al actual Ecuador. Además del uso de los “Diarios” de Humboldt, recientemente publicados, y de las notas sobre lugares y personajes quiteños (ecuatorianos), se utilizará la bibliografía más reciente para explicar diversos aspectos, por ejemplo, la historia geológica de los volcanes, el valor arqueológico y etnográfico de los “Monumentos de los Pueblos Indígenas” ecuatorianos, todo bajo la percepción científica y estética expresada en Cuadros de la Naturaleza e interpretada bajo la visión universal de su testamento filosófico: Cosmos.
La ponencia se centrará en analizar la relación de Humboldt con el Perú a partir de los recursos naturales que ofrecía el virreinato peruano y que llamaron la atención del científico alemán. Dentro de ellos cabe destacar los yacimientos mineros que, debido a su formación minerológica, le resultaron de gran ínterés; sobre todo las minas de Hualgayoc, Cajamarca, y el mineral de Cerro de Pasco. Otro recurso que destacó en sus escritos fue el del guano de las islas y su uso como fertilizante y, adicionalmente, se preocupó por la recesión en la producción y exportación de la quinina, cascarilla o chinchona, que era ampliamente apreciada en Europa por sus efectos medicinales. Marginalmente se abordarán otros productos a los cuales el viajero les dedicó algunas reflexiones como la caña de azúcar y el algodón. La ponencia concluirá con una visión de la sociedad colonial peruana, enfatizando la presencia de los sectores sociales que se beneficiaban de la explotación y comercialización de estos bienes y de la mano de obra que operaba en los centros productivos de la costa y sierra del virreinato, tanto indígena como esclava.
