Der Vergleich mit Humboldts Tagebüchern bietet Aufschlüsse über die für Humboldt typische Arbeitsweise und die Wege seines Wissenserwerbs. Seine eigenen Beobachtungen während des Aufenthaltes in Mexiko sind ergänzt durch persönliche Kontakte vor Ort, durch Literatur- und Archivstudien in Mexiko und nach der Rückkehr in europäischen Archiven. So hat er beispielsweise die Pyramiden von Teotihuacan nicht besucht, aber die Beschreibung aus einem Brief von Juan José de Oteyza, den er am Real Seminario de Minería in Mexiko-Stadt kennengelernt hatte, in seine Publikation aufgenommen. Auch einzelne Tafeln stellen mexikanische Altertümer dar, die Humboldt nicht selbst besichtigt hat. Im Vortrag werden einige Quellen der „Vues des Cordillères“ aus Humboldts Tagebüchern vorgestellt, wie z. B. Beschreibungen seiner Exkursionen in Mexiko aus den von der Alexander-von-Humboldt-Forschungsstelle publizierten Bänden und bisher unedierte Notizen seiner Studien im Archiv des Vatikans im Sommer 1805.
Eingangs wird der Klassizismus vorgestellt, wie er von seinem Protagonisten Johann Joachim Winckelmann, des "Begründer[s] der Klassischen Archäologie und der aus ihr später entstandenen Wissenschaft der Kunstgeschichte" (A. H. Borbein), aber auch von Christian Gottlieb Heyne vermittelt wurde. Heynes Göttinger archäologische Vorlesungen, das wurde bisher kaum beachtet, hörten die Brüder Humboldt. Dies führt - angesichts der Vorrangstellung der Plastik in der Antike - zu den auf den Seiten der "Pittoreske[n] Ansichten" der Vues de Cordillères genannten, ästhetische Maßstäbe setzenden "Meisterwerken des Praxiteles und Lysippos". Anhand einiger mexikanischer Tafeln und der in den Anmerkungen Humboldts bisher nicht herangezogenen Literatur sowie deren Abbildungen wird das vergleichende Sehen, einerseits als zugleich abstufendes andererseits als wegweisendes vorgeführt.

Die Ordnung der Weltkulturen

Im Vordergrund dieser Untersuchung, die Alexander von Humboldts Vues des Cordillères et Monumens des peuples indigènes de l'Amérique (1810 - 1813) im Kontext des gesamten Humboldtschen Oeuvre zu verstehen sucht, steht die Frage, inwieweit sich in diesen »Ansichten der Kultur« nicht nur ein neuer und folgenreicher Amerika-Diskurs, sondern darüber hinaus die Umrisse einer neuen Ordnung der Weltkulturen abzeichnen. Das ästhetisch sicherlich radikalste Buch Alexander von Humboldts wird als musée imaginaire der Weltkulturen verstanden und aus transregionaler Perspektive in seiner räumlichen, zeitlichen, sozialen, literarischen, friktionalen, genrebezogenen und spezifisch kulturellen Dimension untersucht. Dabei erweisen sich die Vues als transmediales Kaleidoskop eines fraktalen Entwurfs der Kulturen der Welt in der zweiten Phase beschleunigter Globalisierung.
