In this article, entangled media history is presented as an approach to combine recent methodological developments towards an international turn in intellectual history on the one hand with the social history of ideas on the other. By concentrating on press networks, publishers, and media formats the various processes of constitutionalization and nationalization in the aftermath of the French Revolution and the Napoleonic period can be reconstructed as part of an emerging European public sphere. This is exemplified by the example of the political discourse of that time in Germany. In a first step, the international networks around the two most important German publishers, Johann Friedrich Cotta and Friedrich Arnold Brockhaus, are reconstructed. In the second part, the crucial role of translations and adaptations of political articles in two decisive media formats of the political discourse, the historical-political journals and the "Conversationslexikon" is examined. And finally in a third step, the specific significance of the reception of the Spanish revolution of the "trienio liberal" for the development of a constitutional vocabulary in Germany is sketched.

This article examines scenes of Zeitungslektüre (newspaper reading) in some exemplary Fontane novels to reconstruct them as a serial narrative pattern that fills specific narrative functions similar to other narrative patterns such as letter writing or country excursions (Landpartien) which have often been shown to be typical for Fontane’s novels. These newspaper scenes can be read as multifaceted culmination points at the surface of the novel’s story in which aspects of Fontane’s writing practices, formal aspects (characterization of figures, narrative temporalities, narrative structure), autopoietic reflection as well as addresses to the readers are brought into a complex interplay. The newspaper-reading scenes are thus significant textual signals of what has been called Fontane’s specific Zeitungspoetik. The argument is unfolded by examining examples from three different genres: the historical novel Unwiederbringlich, the “Berlin everyday novels” (“Berliner Alltagsgeschichten”) Irrungen, Wirrungen and Mathilde Möhring, and the Zeitroman or political novel Der Stechlin.

This paper focuses on the religious background of lawgiving and its mythical models in books I-IV of the Laws. This latest of Plato's Works deals with the main tasks of a legislator in the ideal political community. In this dialogue, the lawgiver (nomothetes) is the heir of a long Greek tradition with mythical and historical forerunners (Solon, Lycurgus, Epimenides, etc.) who had a special relation with the divinity. Perhaps the best example of this kind of divine lawgiver is Minos, who was able of knowing the Gods' will and received from them the holy laws. In that aspect, Plato depends on the legendary nomothetai from myth and dwells heavily in oracular procedures as a way of communication with divinity and acquisition of decrees or confirmation of laws. If our view is correct, the model for the best possible constitution comes from Divine Wisdom (i.e. Philosophy) through oracular mediation from their mythical origins in Crete and Egypt. The medium between Gods and Men and its mantic practices - as the holy men (theioi andres) from myth and archaic Greek politics - seems a key figure for a better understanding of Plato's most complex dialogue.

In March 2021, the IMAGINES Project – an international and interdisciplinary research network for the modern reception of antiquity in the visual and performing arts – held their seventh conference online. The event focused on PLAYFUL CLASSICS, and was hosted from Göttingen University by the organizers Juliette Harrisson, Antje Kuhle and Martin Lindner.
The keynote by Dunstan Lowe on „The Danger of Seriousness: Play and the Future of Classics“ outlined the potential of researching classical reception as a creative process. The following sections brought this to life with in-depth treatments of the underlying mechanics of constructing and deconstructing, playful learning, the „Faces of Antiquity“, forms of interaction and national/nationalistic traditions. The programme combined scholarly contributions with presentations and workshops by various artists and open discussion elements.
The shift to an online format allowed the participation of an unusually international audience, while the interactive elements – including a thematic game as a continuous side event – especially encouraged a large number of students to participate actively. Therefore, this conference report will not just summarize the content of the event, but also provide a student perspective on attending a conference on classical reception – a research area which is mostly neglected in the teaching curriculum.
