Im Werk Alexander von Humboldts sind Spuren zu Johann Gottfried Herder ebenso vielfältig wie Verweise rar. Der vorliegende Aufsatz richtet unter diesem Aspekt den Blick auf Humboldts Ideen zur Physiognomik der Gewächse (1806), in denen er Herder das erste Mal in einer Veröffentlichung namentlich erwähnt. Zwei Jahre später wird der Text in die Ansichten der Natur (1808 ff.) aufgenommen. In der dritten Auflage der Ansichten (1849) ist Herders Name kurioserweise gestrichen. Die Streichung ist weder inhaltlich noch formal nachvollziehbar. Der historische Kontext der Jahre zwischen 1805 und 1808 legt zudem nahe, dass Humboldts Bezugnahme auf Herder sehr bewusst geschehen sein muss. Anhand des Briefwechsels Humboldts mit dem Historiker Johannes von Müller und weiterer Quellen wird gezeigt, dass sich Humboldt mit Schriften Herders auseinandergesetzt hat. Johannes von Müller, Humboldts Freund und Nachbar in dieser Zeit, zog als Herausgeber der Herderschen Werkausgabe sogar eine direkte Filiation von Herder zu Humboldt.

Naturgenuss und Weltgemälde

Humboldts "Kosmos" oder "physische Weltbeschreibung" zielte gleichzeitig auf die äußere und die innere Welt. Entsprechend dem berühmten Wort von Horaz sollte sie zugleich nützen und erfreuen. Solch eine Beschreibung war durch zwei Begriffe charakterisiert, durch Kraft und Freiheit. Der Aufsatz beschäftigt sich mit Humboldts Konzeption seines Werkes, mit seinem von Plinius dem Älteren übernommenen Naturbegriff. Immer wieder nannte Humboldt sein berühmtes Vorbild Laplace, dessen methodologische Prinzipien mit seinen eigenen Überzeugungen übereinstimmten. Der Aufsatz zeigt, dass und wie Humboldt von Herder beeinflusst war, ohne dass er Goethes Freund beim Namen nannte, und erklärt Kants Rolle in diesem Kontext. Die letzten Ziele der Humboldtschen Konzeption von Naturwissenschaft waren die Naturgesetze, die die Naturphänomene miteinander verknüpfen. Schließlich wird Humboldts Hochachtung für die Mathematik analysiert.
Obwohl Johann Gottfried Herder (1744-1803) im Unterschied zu Alexander von Humboldt nie in Lateinamerika war, regte er in seinen Arbeiten das lateinamerikanische und europäische Bewusstsein bei der Wahrnehmung anderer Kulturen an. Ähnlich der amerikanischen Forschungsreise Alexander von Humboldts (1799-1804), die zu einer verstärkten Aufnahme und Wirkung des philosophischen Denkens im europäischen und deutschsprachigen Kulturraum führte, trugen Herders Ideen über den Zusammenhang zwischen Mensch, Natur, Kultur und Tradition zur lateinamerikanischen Rezeption und Transformation europäischen Denkens bei und zur Vermittlung humanistischer Wertorientierungen. In den Darlegungen werden in drei Schritten folgende Aspekte erörtert. Erstens: Worin besteht das Wesen des Literatur- und Philosophiebegriffs bei Herder? Zweitens: Welche Konsequenzen ergeben sich daraus für seine Hermeneutik? Und drittens: Worin besteht die Aktualität des sozialkritischen Denkens Herders?
In a letter dated August 6, 1797 to his friend Christian Gottfried Körner, Friedrich Schiller characterized Alexander von Humboldt as a person of limited imagination, who, in spite of his numerous activities, would never be able to achieve greatness in his scientific pursuits. Yet, only in 1849 did Humboldt learn of Schiller’s opinion from the published correspondence between Schiller and Körner. Nonetheless, Humboldt declared that this basically unjust characterization of himself by Schiller would never prevent him from admiring the great German playwright and poet; moreover, Humboldt looked for comfort in a similarly harsh opinion of Johann Gottfried Herder also expressed by Schiller. In the end, Humboldt could barely conceal his feelings of disappointment regarding Schiller’s opinion, especially because Humboldt had considered Schiller to be his friend.
