We present a nonparametric way to retrieve an additive system of differential equations in embedding space from a single time series. These equations can be treated with dynamical systems theory and allow for long-term predictions. We apply our method to a modified chaotic Chua oscillator in order to demonstrate its potential
A new synthesis of 9 alpha-hydroxy-alpha-agarofuran (6 alpha) is described, using a microbiological hydroxylation alpha-agarofuran (5) as the key reaction. The stereochemistry of the biohydroxylation was determined on the basis of a NOESY-experiment and GIAO calculations at the B3LYP/cc-pVDZ level. A strong gamma-effect was observed at C15 of the agarofuran ring which was correctly predicted by the GIAO-B3LYP calculations
In order to investigate the temporal characteristics of cognitive processing, we apply multivariate phase synchronization analysis to event-related potentials. The experimental design combines a semantic incongruity in a sentence context with a physical mismatch (color change). In the ERP average, these result in an N400 component and a P300-like positivity, respectively. Synchronization analysis shows an effect of global desynchronization in the theta band around 288 ms after stimulus presentation for the semantic incongruity, while the physical mismatch elicits an increase of global synchronization in the alpha band around 204 ms. Both of these effects clearly precede those in the ERP aver-age. Moreover, the delay between synchronization effect and ERP component correlates with the complexity Of the cognitive processes. Adaptability of information systems has become a substantial competition factor. Today's insufficient methodical support for the realization of adaptability frequently leads to unused potentials of deployed information technology in enterprises. In this contribution a procedure is presented, which addresses the demand to determine the necessary adaptability of an enterprise related to its surrounding environmental environment.
The concept of adaptability has been widely recognised as research field in recent years. Business information systems play a key part in terms of business performance. Adaptability of information systems therefore is a primary goal of vendors and end-users. However, so far concepts that help to determine the adaptability of Information Systems are missing. Based on research results of the project CHANGE1 this contribution presents an integrated process model addressing the problem and a possible solution.
Für Unternehmen stellt sich immer wieder die Frage nach der Stabilität der Geschäftsprozesse. Wie flexibel bzw. wandlungsfähig müssen Unternehmensarchitekturen ausgelegt werden, damit Veränderungen in der Aufbau- oder Ablauforganisation ITseitig auch in Zukunft gefolgt werden kann? Dazu wird im folgenden Beitrag das Paradigma Wandlungsfähigkeit als Gestaltungsziel von Unternehmensarchitekturen charakterisiert und der Zusammenhang zwischen Veränderungen des Umfeldes eines Unternehmens und erforderlicher Anpassungsfähigkeit der Informationssysteme erläutert.
Wandlungsfähigkeit von Informationssystemen ist zu einem wesentlichen Wettbewerbsfaktor geworden. Die derzeit unzureichende methodische Unterstützung zur Umsetzung von Wandlungsfähigkeit führt in Unternehmen häufig zu ungenutzten Potentialen einer leistungsfähigen Struktur durch die eingesetzte Informationstechnologie. Ziel des Forschungsprojektes CHANGE ist es, Methoden und Vorgehensmodelle zu entwickeln, die eine dauerhafte Wandlungsfähigkeit von Informationssystemen unterstützen. Dazu wird im Rahmen dieses Beitrages ein Verfahren vorgestellt, welches der Forderung zur Ermittlung der notwendigen Wandlungsfähigkeit unter Einbeziehung des Unternehmensumfeldes nachkommt. Als wesentliches Ergebnis wird ein Kennzahlensystem entwickelt, das zum einen die Umweltsituation als Indikator für den Wandlungsdruck eines Unternehmens beschreibt. Im nächsten Schritt werden Kriterien zur Ermittlung des Wandlungspotentials der eingesetzten IT herangezogen. Abschließend werden beide Dimensionen zusammengeführt und in ihrer Bedeutung für die IT Strategie eines Unternehmens interpretiert.
Recent experiments using time- and angle-resolved two-photon photoemission (2PPE) spectroscopy at metal/polar adsorbate interfaces succeeded in time-dependent analysis of the process of electron solvation. A fully quantum mechanical, two-dimensional simulation of this process, which explicitly includes laser excitation, is presented here, confirming the origin of characteristic features, such as the experimental observation of an apparently negative dispersion. The inference of the spatial extent of the localized electron states from the angular dependence of the 2PPE spectra has been found to be non-trivial and system-dependent. Recent work on mutation-selection models has revealed that, under specific assumptions on the fitness function and the mutation rates, asymptotic estimates for the leading eigenvalue of the mutation-reproduction matrix may be obtained through a low-dimensional maximum principle in the limit N --> infinity (where N, or N-d with d greater than or equal to 1, is proportional to the number of types). In order to extend this variational principle to a larger class of models, we consider here a family of reversible matrices of asymptotic dimension N-d and identify conditions under which the high-dimensional Rayleigh-Ritz variational problem may be reduced to a low-dimensional one that yields the leading eigenvalue up to an error term of order 1/N. For a large class of mutation-selection models, this implies estimates for the mean fitness, as well as a concentration result for the ancestral distribution of types
The luminescence of a ladder-type methyl-poly(para-phenylene) (MeLPPP) doped with platinum-porphyrin dye PtOEP covering the concentration 10(-3)-5% by weight has been measured employing cw and transient techniques. Upon excitation into the range of absorption of the host, strong phosphorescence of the dopant is observed. Possible ways of populating the dopant triplet state are considered. (c) 2004 Elsevier B.V. Der vorliegende Beitrag gibt eine Einführung in die Analyse und Optimierung wissensintensiver Geschäftsprozesse. Dazu wird die Modellierungsmethodik KMDL® vorgestellt und ein Szenario ihrer Anwendung auf wissensintensive Prozesse im Finanzdienstleistungssektor entworfen. Dies wird exemplarisch am Dienstleistungsentwicklungsprozess sowie am Kundenberatungsprozess demonstriert. Dabei werden für beide Prozesse durch den Einsatz der KMDL® erkennbare Potenzialfelder aufgezeigt und Handlungsempfehlungen entworfen.
Die zunehmend dynamische Umwelt erfordert steigende Adaptivität von Softwareentwicklungsprozessen. Dem kann durch eine Prozessgestaltung nach Methoden des geschäftsprozessorientierten Wissensmanagements und dem damit vollzogenen Paradigmenwechsel zur nachfrageorientierten Wissensverteilung begegnet werden. In diesem Beitrag wird die Analyse einer ausgewählten Instanz eines mit der KMDL-SE beschriebenen Softwareentwicklungsprozesses vorgestellt
This study concerns the Quantitative Phase Analysis (QPA) of historical bricks coming from the complex of the Great Palace of the Byzantine Emperors in Istanbul. The studied samples are characterised by different chemical compositions (low and high calcium content), variable firing temperatures and different amounts of soluble salts as damage products. In the low-Ca samples, the decrease of the phyllosilicate content (from 23.4 to 6.9 wt%) is associated to the increase of the amorphous fraction (from 24 to 48%). This clear negative correlation between the phyllosilicate content and the amorphous fraction indicates that in low-Ca systems vitrification processes are overwhelming with respect to nucleation and recrystallisation processes. By contrast, high-Ca samples present newly formed Ca(Mg) silicates (diopside from 5.7 to 27.2%; anorthite from 1.4 to 8.7%) and aluminium silicates (gehlenite only in two samples, 6.2 and 7.7%) associated to the decrease of quartz (from 27.7 to 11.5%), phyllosilicate (from 6.5% until complete break down) and amorphous (from 30 to 14%) phase fractions. These findings support the role played by the CaO(MgO) content deriving from carbonates decomposition which reacts with Al2O3 and SiO2 oxides from dehydroxylated clay minerals and quartz grains. The above results have been obtained by X-ray powder diffraction data using the combined Rietveld refinement - internal standard method in order to estimate both the crystalline and the amorphous phase fractions. In addition, the coexistence of two distinct plagioclases in high-Ca samples was modelled as follows: a primary albite, which tends to incorporate Ca during the firing process as demonstrated by the increasing of gamma crystallographic angle, and a newly formed anorthite. Finally, by difference between the X-ray fluorescence data and the chemical compositions inferred by QPA, it proved possible to roughly estimate the residual chemical composition attributable to the amorphous fraction. On the basis of our data, we believe that Rietveld refinement combined with the internal standard method represent a powerful tool to better characterise complex polycrystalline and amorphous mixture as in the case of historical bricks

The gastrointestinal glutathione peroxidase (GI-GPx, GPx2) is a selenoprotein that was suggested to act as barrier against hydroperoxide absorption but has also been implicated in the control of inflammation and malignant growth. In CaCo-2 cells, GI-GPx was induced by t-butyl hydroquinone (tBHQ) and sulforaphane (SFN), i.e., "antioxidants" known to activate the "antioxidant response element" (ARE) via electrophilic thiol modification of Keap1 in the Nrf2/ Keap1 system. The functional significance of a putative ARE in the GI-GPx promoter was validated by transcriptional activation of reporter gene constructs upon exposure to electrophiles (tBHQ, SFN, and curcumin) or overexpression of Nrf2 and by reversal of these effects by mutation of the ARE in the promoter and by overexpressed Keap1. Binding of Nrf2 to the ARE sequence in authentic gpx2 was corroborated by chromatin immunoprecipitation. Thus, the presumed natural antioxidants sulforaphane and curcumin may exert their anti-inflammatory and anticarcinogenic effects not only by induction of phase 2 enzymes but also by the up-regulation of the selenoprotein GI-GPx
We study Poincare recurrence of chaotic attractors for regions of finite size. Contrary to the standard case, where the size of the recurrent regions tends to zero, the measure is no longer supported solely by unstable periodic orbits of finite length inside it, but also by other special recurrent trajectories, located outside that region. The presence of the latter leads to a deviation of the distribution of the Poincare first return times from a Poissonian. Consequently, by taking into account the contribution of these special recurrent trajectories, a corrected estimate of the measure is obtained. This has wide experimental implications, as in the laboratory all returns can exclusively be observed for regions of finite size, and only unstable periodic orbits of finite length can be detected
Chaotic channel

This work combines the theory of chaotic synchronization with the theory of information in order to introduce the chaotic channel, an active medium formed by connected chaotic systems. This subset of a large chaotic net represents the path along which information flows. We show that the possible amount of information exchange between the transmitter, where information enters the net, and the receiver, the destination of the information, is proportional to the level of synchronization between these two special subsystems
Concepts from Ergodic Theory are used to describe the existence of special non-transitive maps in attractors of phase synchronous chaotic oscillators. In particular, it is shown that, for a class of phase-coherent oscillators, these special maps imply phase synchronization. We illustrate these ideas in the sinusoidally forced Chua's circuit and two coupled Rossler oscillators. Furthermore, these results are extended to other coupled chaotic systems. In addition, a phase for a chaotic attractor is defined from the tangent vector of the flow. Finally, it is discussed how these maps can be used for the real-time detection of phase synchronization in experimental systems. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved
Unicellular algae serve as models for the study and discovery of metabolic pathways, for the functional dissection of cell biological processes such as organellar division and cell motility, and for the identification of novel genes and gene functions. The recent completion of several algal genome sequences and expressed sequence tag collections and the establishment of nuclear and organellar transformation methods has opened the way for functional genomics approaches using algal model systems. The thermo-acidophilic unicellular red alga Galdieria sulphuraria represents a particularly interesting species for a genomics approach owing to its extraordinary metabolic versatility such as heterotrophic and mixotrophic growth on more than 50 different carbon sources and its adaptation to hot acidic environments. However, the ab initio prediction of genes required for unknown metabolic pathways from genome sequences is not trivial. A compelling strategy for gene identification is the comparison of similarly sized genomes of related organisms with different physiologies. Using this approach, candidate genes were identified that are critical to the metabolic versatility of Galdieria. Expressed sequence tags and high-throughput genomic sequence reads covering >70% of the G. sulphuraria genome were compared to the genome of the unicellular, obligate photoautotrophic red alga Cyanidioschyzon merolae. More than 30% of the Galdieria sequences did not relate to any of the Cyandioschyzon genes. A closer inspection of these sequences revealed a large number of membrane transporters and enzymes of carbohydrate metabolism that are unique to Galdieria. Based on these data, it is proposed that genes involved in the uptake of reduced carbon compounds and enzymes involved in their metabolism are crucial to the metabolic flexibility of G. sulphuraria
We combine HST imaging from the GEMS ( Galaxy Evolution from Morphologies and SEDs) survey with photometric redshifts from COMBO-17 to explore the evolution of disk-dominated galaxies since z less than or similar to 1.1. The sample is composed of all GEMS galaxies with Sersic indices n < 2.5, derived from fits to the galaxy images. We account fully for selection effects through careful analysis of image simulations; we are limited by the depth of the redshift and HST data to the study of galaxies with M-V less than or similar to -20, or equivalently, log (M/M-circle dot) greater than or similar to 10. We find strong evolution in the magnitude-size scaling relation for galaxies with M-V less than or similar to -20, corresponding to a brightening of similar to 1 mag arcsec(-2) in rest-frame V band by z similar to 1. Yet disks at a given absolute magnitude are bluer and have lower stellar mass-to-light ratios at z similar to 1 than at the present day. As a result, our findings indicate weak or no evolution in the relation between stellar mass and effective disk size for galaxies with log (M/M-circle dot) greater than or similar to 10 over the same time interval. This is strongly inconsistent with the most naive theoretical expectation, in which disk size scales in proportion to the halo virial radius, which would predict that disks are a factor of 2 denser at fixed mass at z similar to 1. The lack of evolution in the stellar mass-size relation is consistent with an "inside-out'' growth of galaxy disks on average (galaxies increasing in size as they grow more massive), although we cannot rule out more complex evolutionary scenarios
