Hantaviren in Deutschland
(2018)
Aim - Plant reintroductions and other forms of targeted species translocations will in the future gain growing importance for nature conservation. In fragmented habitats, species reintroductions offer one of the most efficient tools for preserving or restoring plant diversity. In our study, we have compiled available data about plant reintroduction projects in Germany to answer the following questions: (1) What are the characteristics, habitat preferences and ecological strategies of species considered in plant reintroduction trials, and are these representative of the entire class of threatened species in Germany? (2) Is the judgment of the success or failure of plant reintroductions biased by the choice of species used in the experiments? (3) Do reintroduction efforts focus on those species for which Germany has a particularly high responsibility for conservation?
Methods - Information about reintroduction projects in Germany were obtained from published and internet sources as well as unpublished reports. In our search we focused on single-species trials in the framework of scientific or conservation projects. For all threatened species included in our database, we compiled information on their systematics, life form, ecological strategies and habitat preferences. A list of all species being threatened nationally or regionally, comprising both reintroduced and not reintroduced species, served as a reference for statistical analysis.
Results - The list of vascular plants used in conservation-oriented reintroductions consisted of 196 taxa. Species of families with large and conspicuous, mostly insect-pollinated flowers (for example, Orchidaceae) were over-represented among the reintroduced species compared to those threatened species not included in reintroduction trials. Species considered were also more often than expected found in semi-natural open habitats such as heathlands and grasslands. Notably, many projects focused on calcareous grasslands, characterized by dry, high-pH and infertile soils. In contrast, species of more near-natural vegetation (alpine and rocky formations, forests) were under-represented. About 25% of the species that were reintroduced are not threatened on the national scale. Out of 150 species for which Germany has a particularly high responsibility for conservation, only 14 (9.3%) were reintroduced. For only about 1/3 of all reintroduction attempts, success or failure were documented; whereas the success rate appears to be relatively low in nutrient-poor environments, trials with nutrient-demanding and competitive species were more successful.
Conclusions - We conclude that conservation-oriented reintroduction attempts should focus more on species for which the country or a region has a particular high responsibility. Reintroductions, to a larger extent than at present, also need to consider the different chances of success in different habitat types and environments.

The present study provides a review of the published ectoparasitic species of European bats. On the basis of own researches in Germany, the abundance of each parasite was analysed. For every bat species the community of the dominant parasites and the quality of the host-parasite relation were summarized. Part 2 is concerned with the ectoparasites of the Greater mouse-eared bat (Myotis myotis), of the Lesser mouse-eared bat (Myotis blythii), of the Long-fingered bat (Myotis capaccinii), of the Whiskered bat (Myotis mystacinus), and of the Natterer`s bat (Myotis nattereri).
The majority of the annually accumulated 9 million t of organics in municipal solid waste is recycled. Amongst the technological options composting is most important. 15% are treated by digestion and result in both biogas as a renewable energy source and organic residues. Compost contains considerable amounts of minerals and organic carbon which can substitute fertilizers including organic compounds. Application of compost for the reproduction of humus in soils is its most important effect. Scientifically, the applicability of the humus balancing method developed by VDLUFA is proven. It balances input and output of organic carbon during cultivation and harvest. Optimum level of humus which is a specific fixed value for each type of soils is therefore realized. An energy humus index is proposed, which may indicate preferred usage of organics as fertilizer or renewable energy source.

Zur Ektoparasitenfauna der Fledermäuse in Sachsen Anhalt : Ectoparasites of bats in Saxony-Anhalt
(2011)
During the summer 2010 several mist nettings for the monitoring of bat species were performed in Saxony-Anhalt. Captured individuals were tested for ectoparasitic infestation. The aim was to update the fauna of ectoparasites of this state and to collect data on the distribution of individual species. Regarding this, results of previous surveys are summarised. In the present study nine out of thirteen bat species were found to be infested with a total of one flea species, one species of bat flies and eight species of mites. The infestation with fleas was below the expectations. Six spinturnicid mite species out of those occurring in Germany could be ascertained for Saxony-Anhalt. These are Spinturnix acuminatus (Koch, 1836), S. andegavinus (Kolenati, 1857), S. helvetiae Deunff, Keller & Aellen, 1986, S. mystacinus (Kolenati, 1857), S. plecotinus (Koch, 1839) and S. puncata (Sundevall, 1833). Details about the infestation with parasites (abundances) of the respective bat species are presented. Further information on the biology of spinturnicid mites are given and infestation characteristics are compared with those of other surveys. Keywords: ectoparasites, bats, Chiroptera, gamasine mite, Acari, Spinturnix, Ischnopsyllidae, Nycteribiidae, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany
Ischnopsyllus variabilis (WAGNER, 1898), a model of survival strategy of rare insects? The present paper reports a collection of Ischnopsyllus variabilis in the Schorfheide, a region in the north of Brandenburg (Germany). This bat flea is very rare and the specimens are seldom encountered. The collection of 5 males and 21 females of I. variabilis from summer roosts of the Nathusius`pipistrelle (Pipistrellus nathusii) is a remarkable documentation, since it represents the largest known population of the flea in Europe. Moreover, the data reported here emphasizes for the first time that the Nathusius` pipistrelle is the main host of I. variabilis. The development of the larvae take place in maternity colonies of this bat species. The occurrence of a local concentration of rare specimens may be a vital necessity for the long range survival. Hence, I. variabilis may represent an appropriate model for the understanding of ecology of rare insects, since a local population could be the origin for a scattered distribution over larger areas. The spread of the flea is promoted by the expansive seasonal migrations of the Nathusius`pipistrelle. The exact mechanisms and parameters underlying such an accumulation of specimens in a special maternity colony are still unknown and require further investigations.
A list of rare or interesting phanerogams from Potsdam and surroundings is presented. Most of them were recorded between 2006 and 2008. In some cases short remarks about the taxonomy, distribution and other details are given. The collections of Geranium purpureum and Parietaria judaica are the first records for Brandenburg. The collections of Agastache foeniculum, Coreopsis lanceolata, Geranium nodosum, Hieracium amplexicaule, Juncus ensifolius, Lactuca virosa, Sedum sarmentosum and Verbena bonariensis are probably the first information about adventive occurences of these species in this Federal State. Viscum album is reported on rare host species: Chaenomelis sp., Quercus spp. and Rosa hybrids.

Members of the Erysiphales are conspicuous phytoparasitic microfungi during the late summer and autumn period. A lot of literature sources were evaluated by BRANDENBURGER & HAGEDORN (2006). They give an overview of the floristic data of the separate Erysiphales-host-combinations in the individual federal states of Germany. Unfortunately, most of the articles published after 2000 and especially many unpublished data assembled since 1970s have not been included. Therefore the present list is a supplementa-tion to BRANDENBURGER & HAGEDORN (2006). A total of 1.994 new records of Erysiphales-host-combinations from all federal states of Germany the Saarland excluded have been listed. Most of them are from Brandenburg, Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt. In contrast to that obvious deficits clearly exist in the federal states of Bremen, Hamburg, Hessen and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Compared to BRANDENBURGER & HAGEDORN (2006) only the first record of the respective Erysiphales-host-combination in the particular federal states of Germany is given. If the last record of an Erysiphales-host-combination is older than 25 years in some cases a new record is also listed. Since 2000 17 Erysiphales taxa have been collected in Germany for the first time. All in all 97 matrices novae especially different cultivated plants are compiled. 49 resp. 59 fungus-host-combinations are new for Europe and Central Europe and furthermore 199 combinations are new for Germany. 54 records are the first exact data for the occurrence of the fungus- host-combination in Germany. These combinations have been listed globally in the literature for Germany until today but without any exact data. A part of the given records offer double infections with other phytoparasitic micro-fungi. These infections have been represented summarily. A list of fungus-host-combinations published in the literature but not clearly recorded for Germany is given.
Besides habitat loss, population-biological and genetic consequences of habitat fragmentation are thought to be a major threat to species since the 1990's and thus are now in the focus of plant species conservation. Using examples, this article gives an overview on the state of the art. It aims to evaluate the relevance habitat fragmentation and the resulting small size and isolation of populations may have for Central European plant populations. Stochasticity, edge effects, pollinator limitation, genetic drift and inbreeding depression are identified as important and very widespread negative effects. Together with changed habitat quality due to eutrophication, drainage or altered land use they negatively affect the fitness of individuals and populations, resulting in an increased risk of extinction. This negative effect of small populations on the fitness of individuals is called the Allee-effect, irrespective of the underlying causes, which can only be identified by scientific experiments. Metapopulation dynamics that are supported by a habitat network may prevent a permanent extinction of plant populations and minimize the negative genetic effects of habitat fragmentation by increasing gene flow via pollen and seeds. However, existing studies from Central Europe mainly concentrated on certain plant families (Gentianaceae, Primulaceae), habitats (species- rich grasslands), insect-pollinated and outcrossing species, and species mainly relying on sexual reproduction. On the other hand, few insights exist about grasses, ruderal plants and weeds, non-indigenous, wind- and self-pollinated species, and species mainly reproducing vegetatively or via apomictic seeds. However, according to the present state of knowledge especially these plant species, and those with a high dispersal potential, have to be considered as less sensitive to habitat fragmentation. Based on these findings, habitat types are classified with regard to their sensitivity to fragmentation, and ecological characters and species traits of sensitive and less sensitive species are compared. Finally, general consequences for conservation practice are presented with regard to target species and habitats for the formation of habitat networks, minimum viable population sizes, genetic rescue of populations, and deploying plants from ex-situ conservation to natural habitats.
Active host-searching in bat ectoparasites. As a pilot study, this paper discribes the mobility of ectoparasites after removing from their hosts. Spinturnix acuminatus (Koch, 1836)(Acari, Spinturnicidae) a permanent stationary bat mite normally survives the removing only a few hours. This species moves easily on the patagium or on human skin. In contrast, on other surfaces the movements of this species seems to be less orientated and it is unlikely that the mite can reach a host in some distance. Nycteribia kolenatii Theodor & Moscona, 1954 (Diptera: Nycteribiidae) a bat fly, shows excellent movements in the fur of its host. The specimens survive the removing from the host several days. The ability to clamber up a wall was tested with a rough clay brick. The bat fly achieves only 9,6 cm on average. This result does not support good abilities for host searching in this species. Bat fleas (Siphonaptera: Ischnopsyllidae): Ischnopsyllus elongatus (Curtis, 1832), I. hexactenus (Kolenati, 1856), I. simplex (Rothschild, 1906)and other species survive the removing from their hosts several days. In case of a vertical barrier they showed a stereotype upside climbing, followed by a horizontal appetitive behavior. The fleas were climbing a distance in the upside of 6,45 m on average(1,2-21,68 m). As excellent climbers bat fleas are able to overcome edges and slopes and to crawl on the ceiling. Therefore, it seems to be no problem for a flea to parasite any bat in a resting room. Additionally, some bugs (Cimex lectularius Linnaeus, 1758) were examinated. They run with a speed of 63 cm per minute and were able to climb easily on the brick. On average their stretch of way achieved 2,85 m in ten minutes.

Different from NW Germany, the northern part of NE Germany and the "Hohe Flaeming" region, central Brandenburg is considered as being largely devoid of natural beech forests because of its subcontinental, dry climate. In the present study the vegetation ecology of beech forests of the region is comprehensively documented for the first time, and they are compared with NW German stands in Lower Saxony. In the study area beech forests are concentrated in the Berlin-Potsdam region along the Havel river lakes which is characterised by relatively high precipitation and a specific land use history. All belong to the Luzulo-Fagetum growing on acid soils. Four subtypes are distinguished according to nutrient availability and soil moisture. The central Brandenburg Luzulo-Fagetum does not markedly deviate from other beech forests in the northern German lowlands with respect to vegetation structure and edaphic subtypes. However, numerous indicator species for humid or moist conditions are less frequent than under atlantic climate conditions in the lowlands of Lower Saxony, a pattern occurring also in other forest communities. On the other hand, nitrogen and disturbance indicators are more frequent in central Brandenburg. As expected, podzolisation of the soils and humus accumulation is lower in beech forests under subcontinental climate, but surprisingly the soils are more sandy and thus drier. However, beech forests are lacking on south-exposed slopes, and they are notably occurring in northern exposition. A combined analysis of distribution patterns and climatic data, postglacial vegetation history and forest use history, and actual rejuvenation dynamics reveals that the present-day beech forests in central Brandenburg have to be considered as near-natural relics, which are currently spreading. The range of potentially natural beech forests is larger than assumed until now, but further on it is not clearly to define.
Investigation of the ectoparasitic fauna (Siphonaptera: Ischnopsyllidae; Diptera: Nycteribiidae; Heteroptera: Cimicidae) on bats in Brandenburg, Germany (part 2). The current investigation of bats in summer and winter quarters took place in addition to the study of Scheffler and Ressler (2005) and supplied new data for spreading and host spectrum of fleas and bat flies. With Penicillidia monoceros Speiser, 1900 on Myotis daubentoni a species of bat fly was found, which was not known in brandenburg (Germany) before. The proof of the flea species Nycteridopsylla longiceps Rothschild, 1908 at Pipistrellus pipistrellus is only the third detection in Brandenburg after 1911 and 1964. With Barbastella barbastellus the spectrum of examinated bats was extended. This species was parasitized by two flea species. On four species of bats also bugs (Heteroptera: Cimicidae)could be caught in summer quarters, which belong to the species Cimex dissimilis (Horvat, 1910). The causes of varying parasitizing rates with different species of fleas and bat flies are discussed.

Some aspects of the fungal flora in the Bol'Üoj Tha; area (NW-Caucasus) - During an excursion to the Bol'soj Tha; area in north-western Caucasus in the late summer of 1998 a number of mycological observations were made. 111 macrofungi species (30 ascomycetes, 81 basidiomycetes), 16 myxomycetes and 42 phytoparasitic fungi (15 Erysiphales, 27 Uredinales) were registered. The majority of the recorded macromycetes were decomposers of dead stems and logs of different trees and shrubs, especially of the dominating tree species Fagus orientalis and Abies nordmanniana. Bondarzewia montana, Hericium alpestre and Phellinus hartigii are typical colonisers of old Abies trunks and therefore of special interest. They were recorded several times, especially in the primeval forests of the excursion area. Some of the collected taxa like Daldinia petriniae, Hypoxylon cercidicola, H. liviae, Ophiostoma polyporicola, Pezoloma marchantiae, Ramsbottomia macracantha, Symphyosyria angelicae, Auriporia aurulenta, Flagelloscypha pilatii, Hymenochaete carpatica, Marasmius cf. rhododendrorum and Pellidiscus pallidus are discussed in detail. Some of the recorded taxa are probably new for the western Caucasus and in some cases also for Russia.
