The present study aimed to examine the extent to which the co-occurrence of ADHD and smoking in adolescents could be attributed to common genetic, environmental and psychopathological factors. Data are from an ongoing prospective study of the outcome of early risk factors. At age 15 years, 305 adolescents completed self-report questionnaires measuring tobacco consumption and deviant peer affiliations. Lifetime psychiatric diagnoses were obtained using standardized interviews. DNA was genotyped for the dopamine D4 receptor (DRD4) gene exon III polymorphism. Adolescents with a lifetime diagnosis of ADHD displayed significantly higher smoking activity than non-ADHD controls. A major component of this association could be accounted for by deviant peer affiliations and the comorbidity with oppositional-defiant and conduct disorder, while a minor part was attributable to DRD4 in males but not in females. These findings suggest that the association of ADHD with smoking relies on risk factors shared by the two behaviors.
Seit vier Jahrzehnten werden verschiedene Neurofeedbackmethoden bei der Behandlung unterschiedlicher Störungen, unter anderem bei AD/HS-Kindern, eingesetzt. Die Grundlage der Anwendung von Neurofeedback bei dieser Störung besteht darin, dass die Kinder Auffälligkeiten in ihrem EEG zeigen. Dort treten im Vergleich zu unauffälligen Kindern vermehrt Theta-Gehirnwellen und weniger Beta-Gehirnwellen auf. Mittels Neurofeedback wird versucht, die Gehirnfunktionen zu korrigieren. Zahlreiche Einzellfallstudien bestätigen die Wirksamkeit dieser Therapiemethode bei der AD/HS-Behandlung. Bisher wurde jedoch keine Studie veröffentlicht, in der die Wirksamkeit von Neurofeedback mit einer Placebogruppe verglichen wurde. Ziel der vorliegenden Studie war es, die Wirksamkeit eines Theta/Beta-Neurofeedbacks (NF) bei der Behandlung von AD/HS-Kindern zu überprüfen und mit einem EMG-Biofeedback (BF) als Placebobedingung zu vergleichen. Es wurden 35 ADHS-Kinder (6 -14 Jahre; 26 Jungen und 9 Mädchen) untersucht. Nach Standarddiagnostik und Vergabe der AD/HS-Diagnose durch einen unabhängigen Psychotherapeuten wurden die Kinder per Zufall zwei Gruppen (NF: n = 18 bzw. BF: n = 17) zugeteilt. Alle Kinder beider Gruppen erhielten ein 30 Sitzungen umfassendes Training mittels Theta/Beta-Neurofeedback bzw. EMG-Biofeedback. Unmittelbar vor und nach dem Training wurden Intelligenz- bzw. Aufmerksamkeitsleistungen untersucht und Einschätzungen des Verhaltens von Eltern und Lehrern erhoben. Im Anschluss an das Training erfolgte eine erneute diagnostische Einschätzung durch einen unabhängigen Psychotherapeuten. Die EEG-Daten in der NF-Gruppe zeigen eine Reduktion der Theta/Beta-Quotienten im Laufe der NF-Sitzungen. Die EMG-Daten zeigen für die EMG-Biofeedback-Bedingung gleichfalls eine Reduktion der EMG-Amplitude. Die Ergebnisse der zweifaktoriellen Varianzanalysen mit Messwiederholung auf einem Faktor zeigen für die angewendeten diagnostischen Verfahren die erwarteten signifikanten Interaktionen zwischen Messzeitpunkt und Gruppe. Die Ergebnisse des t-Tests zeigen signifikante Verbesserungen in der Aufmerksamkeitsleistung, dem Intelligenzniveau und im Verhalten der Kinder aus der NF-Gruppe im Vergleich zu den Resultaten des Prä-Tests. Die EMG-Biofeedbackgruppe zeigt mit Ausnahme einer Erhöhung des Arbeitstempos in den Paper-Pencil-Aufmerksamkeitstests (die im CPT nicht repliziert werden konnte) keine signifikanten Verbesserungen relativ zum Prä-Test. Nach dem Training erhielten 55,6 % (n = 10) der AD/HS-Kinder aus der Neurofeedbackgruppe und 23,5 % (n = 4) der Kinder aus der EMG-Biofeedbackgruppe keine AD/HS-Diagnose nach den Kriterien der ICD-10. Der Chi-Quadrat-Test zeigt jedoch lediglich einen tendenziell bedeutsamen Unterschied (p = .086). Insgesamt bestätigen die Ergebnisse die Wirksamkeit des Neurofeedbacks bei der Behandlung von ADHS-Kindern im Vergleich mit einer Placebogruppe. Weitere Studien in diesem Bereich sind notwendig, um die Wirksamkeit des Neurofeedbacktrainings im Vergleich zu einer Placebomethode bei der ADHS-Behandlung zu untersuchen.
Die Technologie der Computer Erweiterten Realität (engl.: Computer Augmented Reality, CAR) ermöglicht die Anreicherung der Sinneswahrnehmung des Menschen mit computergenerierten Informationen. Diese situationsangepassten Informationen unterstützen den Benutzer bei der Ausführung seiner Handlungen in der Realität. Durch den Einsatz dieser Technologie im industriellen Bereich wird eine Steigerung der Qualität und Effizienz von Industrieprozessen erwartet. Die vorliegende Arbeit untersucht den CAR-Einsatz zur Unterstützung von Tätigkeiten im Bereich technischer Instandhaltung. Am Institut für Prozess- und Produktionsleittechnik der Technischen Universität Clausthal wurde der Prototyp eines CAR-basierten Informations- und Dokumentationssystems für die Instandhaltung entwickelt. Er stellt eine alternative, praxistaugliche und kostengünstige Systemlösung dar, verglichen mit traditionellen CAR-Systemen, deren industrieller Einsatz durch technische, ergonomische und kostenbedingte Probleme nach wie vor erschwert wird. In einer Reihe von Benutzertests wurde die Gebrauchstauglichkeit dieses Prototyps zur Unterstützung von Instandhaltungstätigkeiten durch die Bereitstellung CAR-basierter Bedienungsanleitungen evaluiert. Des Weiteren wurde der Einfluss der speziellen interaktiven Eigenschaften des virtuell erweiterten Umgebungsbildes dieses Prototyps auf die räumliche Orientierung des Benutzers in einer größeren, unbekannten Umgebung untersucht. Die Ergebnisse sprechen deutlich für eine Eignung des Systems. Neben zeitlichen Einsparungen sind insbesondere reduzierte Fehlerzahlen und eine erleichterte räumliche Orientierung in größeren, komplex aufgebauten sowie in nicht oder wenig bekannten Umgebungen zu nennen. Durch die Möglichkeit, Objekte einer Anlage eindeutig zu identifizieren, wird letztlich die Arbeitssicherheit erhöht.
Microsaccades are an important component of the small eye movements that constitute fixation, the basis of visual perception. The specific function of microsaccades has been a long-standing research problem. Only recently, conclusive evidence emerged, showing that microsaccades aid both visual perception and oculomotor control. The main goal of this thesis was to improve our understanding of the implementation of microsaccade generation within the circuitry of saccade control, an unsolved issue in oculomotor research. We make a case for a model according to which microsaccades and saccades result from mutually dependent motor plans, competing for expression. The model consists of an activation field, coding for fixation at its center and for saccades at peripheral locations; saccade amplitude increases with eccentricity. Activity during fixation spreads to slightly peripheral locations in the field and, thus, may result in the generation of microsaccades. Inhibition of remote and excitation of neighbouring locations govern the dynamics of the field, resulting in a strong competition between fixation and saccade generation. We propose that this common-field model of microsaccade and saccade generation finds a neurophysiological counterpart in the motor map of the superior colliculus (SC), a key brainstem structure involved in the generation of saccades. In a series of five behavioral experiments, we tested implications of the model. Predictions were derived concerning (1) the behavior of microsaccades in a given task (microsaccade rate, amplitude, and direction), (2) the interactions of microsaccades and subsequent saccades, and (3) the relationship between microsaccadic behavior and neurophysiological processes at the level of the SC. The results yielded strong support for the model at all three levels of analysis, suggesting that microsaccade statistics are indicative of the state of the fixation-related part of the SC motor map.
Die Adipositas und ihre mitunter schwerwiegenden Auswirkungen nimmt in öffentlichen Diskussionen einen immer größeren Stellenwert ein. In Deutschland leiden neben 37 Millionen Erwachsenen derzeit rund 2 Millionen Kinder an Übergewicht oder Adipositas. Das Arbeitsbuch wendet sich an die Eltern betroffener Kinder. Erklärt wird die Entstehung der Adipositas, zudem sind Informationen zu gesunder Ernährung und deren Umsetzung im Alltag enthalten. Zusätzlich wird auf den wichtigen Faktor der Bewegung sowie eine mögliche erneute Gewichtszunahme eingegangen. Entwickelt wurde das Arbeitsbuch im Rahmen einer Studie und spricht die teilnehmenden Eltern an, deren Kinder sich aufgrund von Adipositas in einer Reha-Klinik befinden. Die enthaltenen Informationen und Alltagshilfen sind jedoch auch für alle anderen betroffenen Eltern relevant.
Numerous recent publications on the psychological meaning of “if” have proposed a probabilistic interpretation of conditional sentences. According to the proponents of probabilistic approaches, sentences like “If the weather is nice, I will be at the beach tomorrow” (or “If p, then q” in the abstract version) express a high probability of the consequent (being at the beach), given the antecedent (nice weather). When people evaluate conditional sentences, they assumingly do so by deriving the conditional probability P(q|p) using a procedure called the Ramsey test. This is a contradicting view to the hitherto dominant Mental Model Theory (MMT, Johnson-Laird, 1983), that proposes conditional sentences refer to possibilities in the world that are represented in form of mental models. Whereas probabilistic approaches gained a lot of momentum in explaining the interpretation of conditionals, there is still no conclusive probabilistic account of conditional reasoning. This thesis investigates the potential of a comprehensive probabilistic account on conditionals that covers the interpretation of conditionals as well as conclusion drawn from these conditionals when used as a premise in an inference task. The first empirical chapter of this thesis, Chapter 2, implements a further investigation of the interpretation of conditionals. A plain version of the Ramsey test as proposed by Evans and Over (2004) was tested against a similarity sensitive version of the Ramsey test (Oberauer, 2006) in two experiments using variants of the probabilistic truth table task (Experiments 2.1 and 2.2). When it comes to decide whether an instance is relevant for the evaluation of a conditional, similarity seems to play a minor role. Once the decision about relevance is made, believability judgments of the conditional seem to be unaffected by the similarity manipulation and judgments are based on frequency of instances, in the way predicted by the plain Ramsey test. In Chapter 3 contradicting predictions of the probabilistic approaches on conditional reasoning of Verschueren et al (2005), Evans and Over (2004) and Oaksford & Chater (2001) are tested against each other. Results from the probabilistic truth table task modified for inference tasks supports the account of Oaksford and Chater (Experiment 3.1). A learning version of the task and a design with every day conditionals yielded results unpredicted by any of the theories (Experiments 3.2-3.4). Based on these results, a new probabilistic 2-stage model of conditional reasoning is proposed. To preclude claims that the use of the probabilistic truth table task (or variants thereof) favors judgments reflecting conditional probabilities, Chapter 4 combines methodologies used by proponents of the MMT with the probabilistic truth table task. In three Experiments (4.1 -4.3) it could be shown for believability judgments of the conditional and inferences drawn from it, that causal information about counterexamples only prevails, when no frequencies of exceptional cases are present. Experiment 4.4 extends these findings to every day conditionals. A probabilistic estimation process based on frequency information is used to explain results on all tasks. The findings confirm with a probabilistic approach on conditionals and moreover constitute an explanatory challenge for the MMT. In conclusion of all the evidence gathered in this dissertation it seems justified to draw the picture of a comprehensive probabilistic view on conditionals quite optimistically. Probability estimates not only explain the believability people assign to a conditional sentence, they also explain to what extend people are willing to draw conclusions from those sentences.
Using the gaze-contingent boundary paradigm with the boundary placed after word n, the experiment manipulated preview of word n + 2 for fixations on word n. There was no preview benefit for 1st-pass reading on word n + 2, replicating the results of K. Rayner, B. J. Juhasz, and S. J. Brown (2007), but there was a preview benefit on the 3- letter word n + 1, that is, after the boundary but before word n + 2. Additionally, both word n + 1 and word n + 2 exhibited parafoveal-on-foveal effects on word n. Thus, during a fixation on word n and given a short word n + 1, some information is extracted from word n + 2, supporting the hypothesis of distributed processing in the perceptual span.
We examined relations between eye movements (single-fixation durations) and RSVP-based event-related potentials (ERPs; N400s) recorded during reading the same sentences in two independent experiments. Longer fixation durations correlated with larger N400 amplitudes. Word frequency and predictability of the fixated word as well as the predictability of the upcoming word accounted for this covariance in a path-analytic model. Moreover, larger N400 amplitudes entailed longer fixation durations on the next word, a relation accounted for by word frequency. This pattern offers a neurophysiological correlate for the lag-word frequency effect on fixation durations: word processing is reliably expressed not only in fixation durations on currently fixated words, but also in those on subsequently fixated words.
Fixation durations in reading are longer for within-word fixation positions close to word center than for positions near word boundaries. This counterintuitive result was termed the Inverted-Optimal Viewing Position (IOVP) effect. We proposed an explanation of the effect based on error-correction of mislocated fixations [Nuthmann, A., Engbert, R., & Kliegl, R. (2005). Mislocated fixations during reading and the inverted optimal viewing position effect. Vision Research, 45, 2201-2217], that suggests that the IOVP effect is not related to word processing. Here we demonstrate the existence of an IOVP effect in "mindless reading", a G-string scanning task. We compare the results from experimental data with results obtained from computer simulations of a simple model of the IOVP effect and discuss alternative accounts. We conclude that oculornotor errors, which often induce mislocalized fixations, represent the most important source of the IOVP effect. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Objective: Despite theoretical discrepancies between different concepts of temperament, some core dimensions are thought to be common to the various models. We compared temperamental traits derived from the New York Longitudinal Study (NYLS) model and the Cloninger dimensions in the developmental course and investigated the associations of temperament with sex as well as with obstetric risks or psychosocial risks present at birth. - Methods: Participants were 151 boys and 157 girls born at differing degrees of obstetric and psychosocial risk from a longitudinal study on a high-risk community sample. In infancy and childhood, NYLS-derived temperamental characteristics were assessed by a highly structured parent interview and standardized behavioral observations. At age 15 years, the Junior Temperament and Character Inventory/1218 was administered. - Results: Moderate correlations were found between Junior Temperament and Character Inventory scales in adolescence and NYLS-derived factors in childhood. The psychosocial risk load seemed to influence the expression of novelty seeking or corresponding NYLS-derived factors, whereas the obstetric risks did not contribute to variation in temperament. Our findings further support highly sex-specific gene x environment interactions on temperament in the developmental course. - Conclusion: The content of our NYLS-derived factors and the specific type of association across different temperament constructs fit into the increasing consensus regarding a small number of higher-order temperamental traits. Objectives: The prospective longitudinal Mannheim Study of Children at Risk followed the development of children from the age of 2 years up to the age of 8 years. Are there differences between the developmental risk load in toddlers (psychopathology, cognition, motor or neurological development. and educational differences) who suffer from a hyperactive disorder at age 8 and that of undisturbed children of the same age? Are there specific harbingers of hyperkinetic disorders for the group concerned? Methods: In terms of their developmental risk load at the age of 2 years, 26 primary school children with hyperkinetic disorders were compared to 241 healthy primary school children, as well as to 25 children of the same age with emotional disturbances and 30 children of the same age with socially disruptive behavior. Results: A significant combination of predictors of later hyperkinetic disorders at primary school age proved to be increased fidgetiness and irritability, as well as a reduced language comprehension, at the age of two. Conclusions: The predictive value of symptoms in early childhood for later hyperkinetic disorder in children of primaryschool age is higher than that of symptoms assessed in infancy, which although expected is without relevant specificity.

Objectives: Are there any differences (organic, psychosocial, psychopathological, cognitive or educational, respectively differences in the motor or neurological development) between infants who later on at the age of 8 years suffer from a hyperactive disorder and those who later on at the same age are undisturbed? Are there specific harbingers for hyperactive disorders in the group concerned? Methods: With regard to their developmental risk load at the age of 3 months, 26 primary school children with hyperactive disorders were compared with 241 healthy children, 25 children with emotional disturbances, and 30 children with socially disruptive behaviour, all of the same age. Results: Identified as the most important predictors for the onset of hyperactive disorders were a reduced birth weight, the mother's origin from a shattered family, early contact impairments on the part of the child, and the mother's neglect of the infant. Conclusions: Altogether, however, the prediction of later hyperactivity in primary school children on the basis of salient features in the infant children remains unsatisfactory and unspecific.
Aims: To investigate whether concurrent alcohol and tobacco use during early adolescence characterizes a subgroup that differs from users of one substance only regarding several risk factors for later substance use problems. Methods: Participants were from a prospective longitudinal cohort study of 384 children at risk for later psychopathology, with the majority being born with obstetric complications and psychosocial adversities. Assessments of adolescent drug consumption and related intrapersonal characteristics were obtained at age 15. Results: Compared to consumers of alcohol only, 15-year-olds drinking and smoking during the same time period (past 4 weeks) had significantly higher levels of consumption and more excessive use of alcohol, started drinking at an earlier age, had higher scores on the Fagerstrom Test for Nicotine Dependence, and more cannabis use. This group could be distinguished from users of alcohol only by higher novelty seeking and more positive alcohol effect expectancies. Compared to consumers of tobacco only, concurrent users reported higher nicotine dependence and more cannabis use. No significant differences were observed regarding frequency and age at initiation of tobacco use, tobacco-related sensitivity, self- efficacy and instrumentality as well as novelty seeking. Conclusions: Concurrent alcohol and tobacco use during early adolescence is associated with characteristics that are well known as risk factors for later alcohol use problems and dependence and that should be targeted by prevention programs.
Epidemiological studies have reported elevated rates of legal drug consumption among adolescents in Germany. The aim of this study was to ascertain patterns and parameters of smoking and drinking in early-users as well as to examine possible determinants of risky patterns of use. Participants were from a longitudinal study of a birth cohort of 384 children at risk. Assessments of adolescent drug consumption as well as of individual and social determinants were obtained at age 15. Adolescents drinking and smoking during the same period (past four weeks) were characterized by more excessive and impulsive consumption and by higher rates of cannabis use. No specific determinants of concurrent use could be found. These findings suggest that adolescents displaying early concurrent tobacco and alcohol use may be at higher risk for substance use problems and should be targeted by prevention programs.
