Der 2008 im Internet veröffentlichte Briefwechsel zwischen Humboldt und Johann Gottfried Ehrenberg wird bald mit 22 bisher unedierten Briefen von Ehrenbergs Hand vervollständigt, die aus dem Bestand der Sammlung Darmstädter der Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin-Preußischer Kulturbesitz stammen. Anne Jobst präsentiert und kontextualisiert in ihrem Artikel vier dieser bisher unbekannten Briefe.
Alexander von Humboldt setzte sich für andere Wissenschaftler ein, damit sie ebenfalls bei dem berühmten Tübinger Verleger Cotta ihre Texte publizieren konnten. Zu diesem Kreis zählte der in Paris lebende Sinologe und Asienexperte Julius Klaproth, dessen Arbeiten Humboldt sehr schätzte. Ute Tintemann untersucht das Geflecht der Beziehungen zwischen Klaproth, Cotta und Humboldt am Beispiel von Klaproths Projekt einer Neuedition des Mithridates oder allgemeine Sprachkunde.
Wie hielt es Alexander von Humboldt mit der Evolution? Dieser Frage geht Thomas Schmuck nach, denn es erscheint ihm auffällig, dass sich Humboldt in seinem umfangreichen Werk kaum zu Fragen der Evolution äußert. An den wenigen Passagen, in denen Humboldt evolutive Themen aufgriff, distanzierte er sich in vorsichtiger Skepsis von nicht durch Empirie gestützten Spekulationen.
Das Haus in der Jägerstraße, welches um 1800 die Nummer 22 erhielt, ist bekannt als das Elternhaus der Brüder Wilhelm und Alexander von Humboldt. Ob Alexander von Humboldt hier oder im elterlichen Schloß geboren wurde, ist unklar, da er selbst im Verlauf seines Lebens zu dieser Frage widersprüchliche Angaben machte. Das Rätsel des Geburtsortes bleibt vorerst weiter ungelöst. Es ist aber eine Akte aus Privatbesitz aufgetaucht, die zur Geschichte des Hauses Jägerstraße 22 zahlreiche bislang unbekannte Dokumente enthält. Sebastian Panwitz stellt einen Abschnitt daraus vor.
Am 17. Dezember 2014 feiert der langjährige Arbeitsstellenleiter der Alexander-von-Humboldt-Forschungsstelle der Berlin-Brandenburgischen Akademie der Wissenschaften Ingo Schwarz seinen 65. Geburtstag. Aus diesem Anlass haben Freunde, Kollegen und Wegbegleiter Beiträge zusammengetragen, die die Bandbreite der jahrzehntelangen Forschungen Ingo Schwarz’ zu Alexander von Humboldt widerspiegeln.
Auf seiner russisch-sibirischen Reise im Jahre 1829 berührte Alexander von Humboldt zweimal Ust’-Kamenogorsk (heute kasachisch Öskemen), die kleine Stadt am Irtyš, an der Südgrenze des Russischen Reiches. Christian Suckow beschreibt Humboldts kurzen, zweitägigen Aufenthalt an dem Ort, der Ausgangs- und Endpunkt der Exkursion zur Silbergrube Zyrjanovsk im südwestlichen Altai und nach Baty an die chinesische Grenze war.

Im Zentrum des Beitrags von Frank Holl steht die Frage nach Humboldts Menschenbild und seiner Sicht auf die Kulturen der Welt. Der Autor sieht seinen Aufsatz als Weiterführung und Ergänzung der Auseinandersetzung mit der Initiative „NoHumboldt21“. Er geht zunächst auf Humboldts Sicht auf die amerikanischen Kulturen ein, die stark mit seiner Kritik am europäischen Kolonialismus und an der Sklaverei verbunden ist. Dann wirft er einen Blick auf Humboldts Sicht auf andere Kulturen der Welt und erläutert letztendlich sein Verhältnis zu den Juden.
Auf welche Weise sich unsere Einschätzung des wissenschaftlichen Wirkens Alexander von Humboldts auf Grundlage der beständig voranschreitenden Erschließung seiner Handschriften verändern konnte und welche aktuellen wissenschaftshistorischen Fragestellungen dadurch aufgeworfen wurden, verdeutlicht Oliver Schwarz an Beispielen aus der Astronomie.
Friedrich Wilhelm III., seit 1797 König von Preußen, garantierte am 19. November 1805 dem 36-jährigen Humboldt eine Pension von jährlich 2.500 Talern. Nur wenige Tage danach ernannte er ihn zu seinem Kammerherrn. Was Humboldt nicht ahnen konnte war, dass dieser Dienst 54 Jahre währen sollte. Bärbel Holtz beschreibt die bisher wenig untersuchte Beziehung des Monarchen zum Forschungsreisenden.
Preußens Mann in Washington

Der Diplomat und preußische Gesandte in Washington, Friedrich von Gerolt, versorgte Humboldt während der 1840er und 1850er Jahre mit Informationen über die politischen und geistigen Entwicklungen auf dem nordamerikanischen Kontinent. Humboldt seinerseits förderte in Berlin Gerolts Karriere und protegierte ihn bei Hofe. In den von Ulrich Päßler vorgestellten Briefen aus den Jahren 1858/59 spricht Gerolt einige Entwicklungen in den Vereinigten Staaten an, die deren (geo-)politische Stellung in der Welt entscheidend prägen sollten.
Friedrich Wilhelm IV. wollte den preußischen Staat nach seiner Thronbesteigung auch auf den Gebieten der Kultur und Wissenschaft modernisieren. Bedeutende Persönlichkeiten wurden nach Berlin geholt. In vielen dieser Berufungsangelegenheiten kam Alexander von Humboldts Einfluss zum Tragen. Zu den Koryphäen, die von Bayern nach Preußen gelockt wurden, gehörte auch der Dichter und Orientalist Friedrich Rückert. Ulrike Leitner veranschaulicht in Ihrem Aufsatz Rückerts Berufung nach Berlin und präsentiert in diesem Kontext zwei Briefe.
Gegenstand des Aufsatzes von Manfred Ringmacher sind zwei Briefe auf Guaraní in Alexander von Humboldts Handschrift. Die Originale der Abschriften wurden im Jahr 1800 in der ehemals jesuitisch betreuten Indianersiedlung Santa María la Mayor am Río Uruguay geschrieben und an den Vizekönig des spanischen Vizekönigreichs La Plata gesandt. Sie sind mit einer zeitgenössischen spanischen Übersetzung versehen; außerdem hat Alexander von Humboldt in französischer Sprache noch einige Erläuterungen gegeben.
