We examined individual differences in masked repetition priming by re-analyzing item-level response-time (RT) data from three experiments. Using a linear mixed model (LMM) with subjects and items specified as crossed random factors, the originally reported priming and word-frequency effects were recovered. In the same LMM, we estimated parameters describing the distributions of these effects across subjects. Subjects’ frequency and priming effects correlated positively with each other and negatively with mean RT. These correlation estimates, however, emerged only with a reciprocal transformation of RT (i.e., -1/RT), justified on the basis of distributional analyses. Different correlations, some with opposite sign, were obtained (1) for untransformed or logarithmic RTs or (2) when correlations were computed using within-subject analyses. We discuss the relevance of the new results for accounts of masked priming, implications of applying RT transformations, and the use of LMMs as a tool for the joint analysis of experimental effects and associated individual differences.
Quantitative information on vegetation and climate history from the late glacial-Holocene on the Tibetan Plateau is extremely rare. Here, we present palynological results of a 4.30-m-long sediment record collected from Koucha Lake in the Bayan Har Mountains, northeastern Tibetan Plateau. Vegetation change has been traced by biomisation, ordination of pollen data, and calculation of pollen ratios. The application of a pollen-climate calibration set from the eastern Tibetan Plateau to Koucha Lake pollen spectra yielded quantitative climate information. The area was covered by alpine desert/steppe, characteristic of a cold and dry climate (with 50% less precipitation than today) between 16,700 and 14,600 cal yr BP. Steppe vegetation, warm (similar to 1 degrees C higher than today) and wet conditions prevailed between 14,600 and 6600 cal yr BR These findings contradict evidence from other monsoon-influenced areas of Asia, where the early Holocene is thought to have been moist. Low effective moisture on the northeastern Tibetan Plateau was likely due to high temperature and evaporation, even though precipitation levels may have been similar to present- day values. The vegetation changed to tundra around 6600 cal yr BP, indicating that wet and cool climate conditions occurred on the northeastern Tibetan Plateau during the second half of the Holocene.
We use a data set of 35 surface pollen samples from lake sediments, moss polsters and top soils on the north- eastern Tibetan Plateau to explore the relationship between modern pollen assemblages and contemporary vegetation patterns. The surface pollen transect spanned four vegetation zones--alpine meadow, steppe, steppe desert and desert-- under different climatic/elevational conditions. Relative representation (R (rel)) values and Principal Components Analysis (PCA) were used to determine the relationships between modern pollen and vegetation and regional climate gradients. The results show that the main vegetation zones along the regional and elevational transects can be distinguished by their modern pollen spectra. Relative to Poaceae, a high representation of Artemisia, Nitraria and Chenopodiaceae was found, while Cyperaceae and Gentiana showed values in the middle range, and Ranunculaceae, Asteraceae, Ephedra and Fabaceae had low relative representation values. PCA results indicate a high correlation between the biogeoclimatic zones and annual precipitation and annual temperature and July temperature. The Artemisia/ Chenopodiaceae ratio and the Artemisia/Cyperaceae ratio are useful tools for qualitative and semi-quantitative palaeoenvironmental reconstruction on the north-eastern Tibetan Plateau. Surface lake sediments are found to have different palynomorph spectra from moss cushion and soil samples, reflecting the larger pollen source area in the contemporary vegetation for lakes.
Evidence for semantic preview benefit (PB) from parafoveal words has been elusive for reading alphabetic scripts such as English. Here we report semantic PB for noncompound characters in Chinese reading with the boundary paradigm. In addition, PBs for orthographic relatedness and, as a numeric trend, for phonological relatedness were obtained. Results are in agreement with other research suggesting that the Chinese writing system is based on a closer association between graphic form and meaning than is alphabetic script. We discuss implications for notions of serial attention shifts and parallel distributed processing of words during reading.
Throughout its empirical research history eye movement research has always been aware of the differences in reading behavior induced by individual differences and task demands. This work introduces a novel comprehensive concept of reading strategy, comprising individual differences in reading style and reading skill as well as reader goals. In a series of sentence reading experiments recording eye movements, the influence of reading strategies on reader- and word-level effects assuming distributed processing has been investigated. Results provide evidence for strategic, top-down influences on eye movement control that extend our understanding of eye guidance in reading.
It has recently been demonstrated that the presentation of a rare target in a visual oddball paradigm induces a prolonged inhibition of microsaccades. In the field of electrophysiology, the amplitude of the P300 component in event-related potentials (ERP) has been shown to be sensitive to the stimulus category (target vs. non target) of the eliciting stimulus, its overall probability, and the preceding stimulus sequence. In the present study we further specify the functional underpinnings of the prolonged microsaccadic inhibition in the visual oddball task, showing that the stimulus category, the frequency of a stimulus and the preceding stimulus sequence influence microsaccade rate. Furthermore, by co-recording ERPs and eye-movements, we were able to demonstrate that, despite being largely sensitive to the same experimental manipulation, the amplitude of P300 and the microsaccadic inhibition predict each other very weakly, and thus constitute two independent measures of the brain’s response to rare targets in the visual oddball paradigm.
Covert shifts of attention are usually reflected in RT differences between responses to valid and invalid cues in the Posner spatial attention task. Such inferences about covert shifts of attention do not control for microsaccades in the cue target interval. We analyzed the effects of microsaccade orientation on RTs in four conditions, crossing peripheral visual and auditory cues with peripheral visual and auditory discrimination targets. Reaction time was generally faster on trials without microsaccades in the cue-target interval. If microsaccades occurred, the target-location congruency of the last microsaccade in the cuetarget interval interacted in a complex way with cue validity. For valid visual cues, irrespective of whether the discrimination target was visual or auditory, target-congruent microsaccades delayed RT. For invalid cues, target-incongruent microsaccades facilitated RTs for visual target discrimination, but delayed RT for auditory target discrimination. No reliable effects on RT were associated with auditory cues or with the first microsaccade in the cue-target interval. We discuss theoretical implications on the relation about spatial attention and oculomotor processes.
Als interdisziplinäres Fach sind die Jüdischen Studien eine grosse Herausforderung. Die methodischen Diskussionen der beteiligten Disziplinen müssen nicht nur nachvollzogen, sondern auch auf Forschungsperspektiven der Jüdischen Studien hin überprüft und oft revidiert werden. Gerade in der Literaturwissenschaft haben sich theoretische Zugaenge in den letzten Jahrzehnten verändert und die Philologien beispielsweise auf kulturwissenschaftliche Fragestellungen hin erweitert. Was dies für die Jüdischen Studien bedeutet, die sich textlichen Überlieferungen aus verschiedenen Epochen und kulturellen Zusammenhängen zuwenden, ist bisher jedoch noch nicht vertiefend reflektiert worden. Ebenso gilt es zu klären, inwiefern Themen und Perspektiven der Jüdischen Studien paradigmatisch für die Literaturwissenschaft sind. In vierzehn Beiträgen analysieren international renommierte Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler die wechselseitige Befruchtung zwischen den Jüdischen Studien und neueren literaturtheoretischen Ansätzen und bieten sowohl eine methodologische Standortbestimmung als auch beispielhafte Textanalysen. In ihrer Bedeutung für die Jüdischen Studien beleuchtet werden u. a. Übersetzungstheorien, Diskursanalyse und Medientheorie, literaturwissenschaftliche Ansätze in den gender studies und in den postcolonial studies sowie Theorien der Performativität, der Intertextualität und der Interkulturalität.

Aus dem Editorial: "Seit Anfang April diesen Jahres feiert Tel Aviv sein 100jähriges Jubiläum. Bei über 400 verschiedenartigsten Veranstaltungen in dieser israelischen Stadt und in unzähligen Orten außerhalb Israels wird 2009 über deren Geschichte resümiert, reflektiert sowie (kritisch) diskutiert. Dabei wird nicht nur die Geschichte der Stadt thematisiert, sondern gerade auch die Gegenwart und insbesondere deren Zukunft. Aus diesem Anlass weist die diesjährige Ausgabe von PaRDeS den Themenschwerpunkt 100 Jahre Tel Aviv /100th anniversary of Tel Aviv auf. Israelische, (zeitweise) in Tel Aviv oder in anderen Ländern tätige Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler nähern sich aus mitunter sehr unterschiedlichen Perspektiven und Wissensbereichen der Geschichte und Gegenwart dieser größten israelischen Stadt. Anita Shapira eröffnet mit Tel Aviv, a White City on the Sands den insgesamt sieben Artikel umfassenden Themenschwerpunkt. In ihrem Beitrag umreißt sie die Entstehungsgeschichte der israelischen Großstadt bis zur Gründung des Staates Israel 1948. Shapira geht dabei insbesondere auf zionistische Ideen bei der Stadtgründung und deren (stellenweise nicht) erfolgte Realisierung ein. In den 1920er und 30er Jahren wird das modernisierte Hebräisch zur Triebfeder bei der Herausbildung einer neuen säkular-jüdischen Kultur in Palästina. Innerhalb dieses Prozesses nimmt gerade die jungen Metropole Tel Aviv eine bedeutende Rolle ein. Philipp Messner beschreibt in seinem Beitrag Tel Aviv und die Revolution des hebräischen Schriftbilds diese Umwälzungen auf der graphisch-ästhetischen Ebene des hebräischen Schriftbildes. In ihrem Artikel Von der Einwanderung der Jekim zu ihrer politischen Partizipation bei den Wahlen zum Tel Aviver Stadtrat im Jahr 1936 zeigt Sarah Wittkopf anhand des Publikationsorgans Mitteilungsblatt der Irgun Olej Merkas Europa welchen Widerständen die Einwanderer aus den deutschsprachigen Ländern bei der Mitgestaltung der Politik in Palästina ausgesetzt waren. Im Zentrum der Auseinandersetzungen in Tel Aviv steht der Spitzenkandidat der Einwandererorganisation Felix Rosenblüth. Im vierten Artikel Building a Modern Jewish City: Projects of the Architect Wilhelm Zeev Haller in Tel Aviv stellt Ulrich Knufinke Kontinuitätslinien und -brüche im architektonischen Schaffen Wilhelm Zeev Hallers zwischen Europa und Tel Aviv dar." [die Herausgeber] PaRDeS, die Zeitschrift der Vereinigung für Jüdische Studien e.V., möchte die fruchtbare und facettenreiche Kultur des Judentums sowie seine Berührungspunkte zur Umwelt in den unterschiedlichen Bereichen dokumentieren. Daneben dient die Zeitschrift als Forum zur Positionierung der Fächer Jüdische Studien und Judaistik innerhalb des wissenschaftlichen Diskurses sowie zur Diskussion ihrer historischen und gesellschaftlichen Verantwortung.

Pri ha-Pardes (Früchte des Obstgartens) ist eine Reihe der Vereinigung für Jüdische Studien e.V., welche in Verbindung mit dem Zentrum für Jüdische Studien der Universität Potsdam publiziert wird. Pri ha-Pardes möchte kleineren wissenschaftlichen Studien, Forschungen am Rande der großen Disziplinen und exzellenten Masterarbeiten eine Publikationsplattform bieten. Im fünften Band der Reihe Pri ha-Pardes skizziert Rebekka Denz die Geschichte von Frauen im Allgemeinen Jüdischen Arbeiterbund („Bund“) seit seiner Gründung 1897 bis zum Jahr 1939. Durch das Prisma der gewählten Hauptquelle ─ die Frauenbiographien der „Doires Bundistn“, einer jiddischsprachigen Biographiensammlung verfasst von Mitgliedern des „Bund“ ─ werden das Mitwirken und die Bedeutung von Frauen in dieser sozialistischen, jiddischistischen Bewegung Ost(mittel)europas dargestellt. Zudem wird ein erster Versuch unternommen, diesen Teil der bundischen Parteigeschichtsschreibung hinsichtlich ihrer (Re-) Konstruktionsprinzipien zu lesen. Die Arbeit gliedert sich dabei analog zum bundischen Selbstverständnis und der geographischen Verschiebung seines Hauptwirkungsfeldes in zwei Teile: Frauen im „Russischen Bund“ (1897-1917) und Frauen im „Polnischen Bund“ (1918-1939). Die Auswirkungen der unterschiedlichen historischen Kontexte auf lebensweltliche Aspekte, Tätigkeiten in Bewegung und Partei sowie Tendenzen der Lebensgestaltung der Bundistinnen werden anhand von drei Vergleichskapiteln aufgezeigt; weitere Einzelkapitel behandeln zeitspezifische Aspekte. Die Instabilität der Lebensverhältnisse für die Mitglieder im illegalen „Russischen Bund“ bzw. die größere Stabilität in der Zeit des „Bund“ in Polen als legale Partei bilden wichtige, bislang vernachlässigte Faktoren bei der Betrachtung der weiblichen Lebensmuster.
Rhodococcus fascians is a Gram-positive phytopathogen that induces shooty hyperplasia on its hosts through the secretion of cytokinins. Global transcriptomics using microarrays combined with profiling of primary metabolites on infected Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) plants revealed that this actinomycete modulated pathways to convert its host into a niche. The transcript data demonstrated that R. fascians leaves a very characteristic mark on Arabidopsis with a pronounced cytokinin response illustrated by the activation of cytokinin perception, signal transduction, and homeostasis. The microarray data further suggested active suppression of an oxidative burst during the R. fascians pathology, and comparison with publicly available transcript data sets implied a central role for auxin in the prevention of plant defense activation. Gene Ontology categorization of the differentially expressed genes hinted at a significant impact of infection on the primary metabolism of the host, which was confirmed by subsequent metabolite profiling. The much higher levels of sugars and amino acids in infected plants are presumably accessed by the bacteria as carbon and nitrogen sources to support epiphytic and endophytic colonization. Hexoses, accumulating from a significantly increased invertase activity, possibly inhibited the expression of photosynthesis genes and photosynthetic activity in infected leaves. Altogether, these changes are indicative of sink development in symptomatic tissues. The metabolomics data furthermore point to the possible occurrence of secondary signaling during the interaction, which might contribute to symptom development. These data are placed in the context of regulation of bacterial virulence gene expression, suppression of defense, infection phenotype, and niche establishment.
Rising demand for food and bioenergy makes it imperative to breed for increased crop yield. Vegetative plant growth could be driven by resource acquisition or developmental programs. Metabolite profiling in 94 Arabidopsis accessions revealed that biomass correlates negatively with many metabolites, especially starch. Starch accumulates in the light and is degraded at night to provide a sustained supply of carbon for growth. Multivariate analysis revealed that starch is an integrator of the overall metabolic response. We hypothesized that this reflects variation in a regulatory network that balances growth with the carbon supply. Transcript profiling in 21 accessions revealed coordinated changes of transcripts of more than 70 carbon-regulated genes and identified 2 genes (myo-inositol-1- phosphate synthase, a Kelch-domain protein) whose transcripts correlate with biomass. The impact of allelic variation at these 2 loci was shown by association mapping, identifying them as candidate lead genes with the potential to increase biomass production.
There are far-reaching conceptual similarities between bi-static surface georadar and post-stack, "zero-offset" seismic reflection data, which is expressed in largely identical processing flows. One important difference is, however, that standard deconvolution algorithms routinely used to enhance the vertical resolution of seismic data are notoriously problematic or even detrimental to the overall signal quality when applied to surface georadar data. We have explored various options for alleviating this problem and have tested them on a geologically well-constrained surface georadar dataset. Standard stochastic and direct deterministic deconvolution approaches proved to be largely unsatisfactory. While least-squares-type deterministic deconvolution showed some promise, the inherent uncertainties involved in estimating the source wavelet introduced some artificial "ringiness". In contrast, we found spectral balancing approaches to be effective, practical and robust means for enhancing the vertical resolution of surface georadar data, particularly, but not exclusively, in the uppermost part of the georadar section, which is notoriously plagued by the interference of the direct air- and groundwaves. For the data considered in this study, it can be argued that band- limited spectral blueing may provide somewhat better results than standard band-limited spectral whitening, particularly in the uppermost part of the section affected by the interference of the air- and groundwaves. Interestingly, this finding is consistent with the fact that the amplitude spectrum resulting from least-squares-type deterministic deconvolution is characterized by a systematic enhancement of higher frequencies at the expense of lower frequencies and hence is blue rather than white. It is also consistent with increasing evidence that spectral "blueness" is a seemingly universal, albeit enigmatic, property of the distribution of reflection coefficients in the Earth. Our results therefore indicate that spectral balancing techniques in general and spectral blueing in particular represent simple, yet effective means of enhancing the vertical resolution of surface georadar data and, in many cases, could turn out to be a preferable alternative to standard deconvolution approaches.
