Die Amerikanischen Reisetagebücher wurden von Alexander von Humboldt während seines gesamten Lebens genutzt, dabei annotiert, auseinandergenommen und in Teilen an andere Forscher weitergegeben. In seinem letzten Lebensjahrzehnt ließ er diese in jene neun ledernen Bände einbinden, die heute in der Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin – Preußischer Kulturbesitz überliefert sind. Eine der Leitthesen der bisherigen Forschung lautete, dass dabei ihre ursprüngliche Ordnung verlorenging bzw. dass sie in großer Unordnung neu gebunden
wurden. In dem Beitrag wird gezeigt, dass diese Leitthese nicht zutrifft. Vielmehr darf von einem weitgehenden Erhalt des ursprünglichen Zustands der Tagebuchbände ausgegangen werden, jenes Zustands, der in dem 1805 in Berlin angefertigten alphabetischen Register zu seinen Manuskripten (Index général) überliefert ist. Analysiert wurden neben dem Index selbst die Materialität der Bän-
de, besonders Paginierungssprünge und Schnittkanten. Zudem wurde die bestehende Foliierung kritisch hinterfragt.

Der vorliegende Text versucht, das in der Humboldt-Forschung weithin bekannte und gut erforschte Thema „Humboldt und die Sklaverei“ biographisch neu einzuordnen und orientiert sich dabei an folgender These: Humboldt durchläuft in den Jahrzehnten nach Beginn seiner Reise durch die amerikanischen Tropen (1799–1804) verschiedene Phasen in der Beschäftigung mit dem Thema Sklaverei. Im Laufe dieser Phasen, die keineswegs einer chronologischen Ordnung folgen, sondern zum Teil parallel verlaufen, nimmt Humboldt verschiedene soziale Rollen an, die ihren Ausdruck in spezifischen Haltungen und Handlungen finden. In ihrer Summe zeichnen sie ein für das Verständnis von Humboldts Persönlichkeit typisches Psychogramm: ein selbstbewusster Moralist, ein rigoroser, beinahe kriminalistisch agierender Wissenschaftler, ein politisch zurückhaltender Akteur.

Es gibt Hunderte, ja Tausende von Listen und Auflistungen im wissenschaftlichen Schaffen Alexander von Humboldts. Sie fügen sich ein in die diskontinuierliche Schreibweise des preußischen Forschers und sind in vielerlei Hinsicht nicht nur wie seine Schriften selbst als vielsprachig, sondern auch als viellogisch zu bezeichnen. Sie repräsentieren Schreibformen, auf welche Humboldt in seinen Amerikanischen Reisetagebüchern als dem wohl besten Zugang zu seinem Denk-, Schreib- und Wissenschaftsstil, aber auch in seinen gedruckten wissenschaftlichen Abhandlungen häufig zurückgriff. Es sind Listen einer Epistemologie ständiger Erweiterung. Sie markieren den Beginn einer transdisziplinären Wissenschaft, die von ihrer Aktualität nichts verloren hat. In unseren Zeiten ökologischer Katastrophen braucht es ein Denken, das unseren Planeten Erde in all seinen Zusammenhängen und Wechselwirkungen erschließt und Sorge dafür trägt, die verschiedenartigen Einwirkungen der Kulturen der Welt auf die Natur nicht länger zu vernachlässigen.

Während seines Romaufenthaltes 1805 befasste Humboldt sich mit antiken Marmorarten und legte dazu eine Sammlung an. Zusammen mit einem unveröffentlichten Manuskript Humboldts sind Teile dieser Sammlung, Originaletiketten sowie die damalige Bestandsliste im Museum für Naturkunde Berlin erhalten. Dieses Marmor-Ensemble wird im vorliegenden Beitrag im Kontext von Reise- und Sammeltraditionen, von wissenschaftsgeschichtlichen Klassifizierungen antiker Marmore sowie in Humboldts Werkzusammenhang vorgestellt.

Das von Alexander von Humboldt ab 1804 oder später verfasste Manuskript „Isle de Cube. Antilles en général“ wurde erst kürzlich zum ersten Mal veröffentlicht. Es stellt die Grundlage für den Essai politique sur l‘île de Cuba (1826) dar, der als das „wichtigste liberale Manifest des 19. Jahrhunderts gegen die Sklaverei“ gilt. Ziel der Untersuchung ist, die textgenetische inhaltliche und stilistische Entwicklung vom Manuskript zur Publikation ansatzweise nachverfolgen zu können, um Rückschlüsse auf Humboldts Arbeitsweise und Strategien als Autor mit einem politischen Anliegen zu ziehen.

Der Erwerb der südamerikanischen Reisetagebücher Alexander von Humboldts durch die Staatsbibliothek Preußischer Kulturbesitz war 2014 ein bedeutendes Ereignis. In einem ersten Schritt wertet der Artikel unveröffentlichte Teile der Tagebücher und Dokumente aus dem Nachlass aus, um den „Kosmos Humboldt´scher Interessen“ zum Thema Pflanzengeographie zu umreißen, darunter auch seine Überlegungen zum Einfluss von Mensch und Tier auf die Ausbreitung von Pflanzen und die Veränderung von Vegetation. Die Einsichten des Gelehrten zur Abhängigkeit Europas von der sogenannten „Neuen Welt“ hinsichtlich der Nahrungsmittel werden ebenso behandelt. So vertrat Humboldt in seinen Ausführungen zum Thema „Was sind Barbaren?“ die These, dass Isolierung von Menschen aus der Gemeinschaft, Elend, Nahrungsmangel, klimatische Ursachen usw. „die Spuren von Zivilisation vertilgen“. Er betonte, dass es nötig sein, in einem weltweiten Wettstreit intellektueller Kräfte die Ressourcenknappheit zu überwinden.
