My essay attends to a number of passages in Alexander von Humboldt’s Personal Narrative in which the Prussian explorer expresses anxiety about the apparent dangers posed by the overwhelmingly productive tropical landscapes he observes. In these passages, the excesses of an “exotic nature” threaten European identity and modes of civilization—and they trouble the accuracy of Humboldt’s own observational project. I also explore Humboldt’s related worry that South American vegetable (and visual) overload will exert a destabilizing effect on his aesthetic sensibility, disrupting his ability to represent the “New Continent” accurately in writing. Finally, I sketch the influence of Humboldt’s representations of tropical excess on nineteenth-century British cultural thought and literary practice. Studying the instabilities experienced by Personal Narrative’s expatriates and colonists promises to draw out important tensions latent in Humboldt’s treatment of tropical landscape and to illuminate broader epistemological and aesthetic shifts being worked out during the period.
Given a system of entire functions in Cn with at most countable set of common zeros, we introduce the concept of zeta-function associated with the system. Under reasonable assumptions on the system, the zeta-function is well defined for all s ∈ Zn with sufficiently large components. Using residue theory we get an integral representation for the zeta-function which allows us to construct an analytic extension of the zeta-function to an infinite cone in Cn.
Variation in nitrogen deposition and available soil nitrogen in a forest–grassland ecotone in Canada

Regional variation in nitrogen (N) deposition increases plant productivity and decreases species diversity, but landscape- or local-scale influences on N deposition are less well-known. Using ion-exchange resin, we measured variation of N deposition and soil N availability within Elk Island National Park in the ecotone between grassland and boreal forest in western Canada. The park receives regionally high amounts of atmospheric N deposition (22 kg ha⁻¹ yr⁻¹). N deposition was on average higher ton clayrich luvisols than on brunisols, and areas burned 1 – 15 years previously received more atmospheric N than unburned sites. We suggest that the effects of previous fires and soil type on deposition rate act through differences in canopy structure. The magnitude of these effects varied with the presence of ungulate grazers (bison, moose, elk) and vegetation type (forest, shrubland, grassland). Available soil N (ammonium and nitrate) was higher in burned than unburned sites in the absence of grazing, suggesting an effect of deposition. On grazed sites, differences between fire treatments were small, presumably because the removal of biomass by grazers reduced the effect of fire. Aspen invades native grassland in this region, and our results suggest that fire without grazing might reinforce the expansion of forest into grassland facilitated by N deposition.
We calculate the additional carbon emissions as a result of the conversion of natural land in a process of urbanisation; and the change of carbon flows by “urbanised” ecosystems, when the atmospheric carbon is exported to the neighboring territories, from 1980 till 2050 for the eight regions of the world. As a scenario we use combined UN and demographic model′s prognoses for regional total and urban population growth. The calculations of urban areas dynamics are based on two models: the regression model and the Gamma-model. The urbanised area is sub-divided on built-up, „green“ (parks, etc.) and informal settlements (favelas) areas. The next step is to calculate the regional and world dynamics of carbon emission and export, and the annual total carbon balance. Both models give similar results with some quantitative differences. In the first model, the world annual emissions attain a maximum of 205 MtC/year between 2020-2030. Emissions will then slowly decrease. The maximum contributions are given by China and the Asia and Pacific regions. In the second model, world annual emissions increase to 1.25 GtC in 2005, beginning to decrease afterwards. If we compare the emission maximum with the annual emission caused by deforestation, 1.36GtC per year, then we can say that the role of urbanised territories (UT) is of a comparable magnitude. Regarding the world annual export of carbon by UT, we observe its monotonous growth by three times, from 24 MtC to 66 MtC in the first model, and from 249 MtC to 505 MtC in the second one. The latter, is therefore comparable to the amount of carbon transported by rivers into the ocean (196-537 MtC). By estimating the total balance we find that urbanisation shifts the total balance towards a “sink” state. The urbanisation is inhibited in the interval 2020-2030, and by 2050 the growth of urbanised areas would almost stop. Hence, the total emission of natural carbon at that stage will stabilise at the level of the 1980s (80 MtC per year). As estimated by the second model, the total balance, being almost constant until 2000, then starts to decrease at an almost constant rate. We can say that by the end of the XXI century, the total carbon balance will be equal to zero, when the exchange flows are fully balanced, and may even be negative, when the system begins to take up carbon from the atmosphere, i.e., becomes a “sink”.
Even though the structure of the plant cell wall is by and large quite well characterized, its synthesis and regulation remains largely obscure. However, it is accepted that the building blocks of the polysaccharidic part of the plant cell wall are nucleotide sugars. Thus to gain more insight into the cell wall biosynthesis, in the first part of this thesis, plant genes possibly involved in the nucleotide sugar interconversion pathway were identified using a bioinformatics approach and characterized in plants, mainly in Arabidopsis. For the computational identification profile hidden markov models were extracted from the Pfam and TIGR databases. Mainly with these, plant genes were identified facilitating the “hmmer” program. Several gene families were identified and three were further characterized, the UDP-rhamnose synthase (RHM), UDP-glucuronic acid epimerase (GAE) and the myo-inositol oxygenase (MIOX) families. For the three-membered RHM family relative ubiquitous expression was shown using variuos methods. For one of these genes, RHM2, T-DNA lines could be obtained. Moreover, the transcription of the whole family was downregulated facilitating an RNAi approach. In both cases a alteration of cell wall typic polysaccharides and developmental changes could be shown. In the case of the rhm2 mutant these were restricted to the seed or the seed mucilage, whereas the RNAi plants showed profound changes in the whole plant. In the case of the six-membered GAE family, the gene expressed to the highest level (GAE6) was cloned, expressed heterologously and its function was characterized. Thus, it could be shown that GAE6 encodes for an enzyme responsible for the conversion of UDP-glucuronic acid to UDP-galacturonic acid. However, a change in transcript level of variuos GAE family members achieved by T-DNA insertions (gae2, gae5, gae6), overexpression (GAE6) or an RNAi approach, targeting the whole family, did not reveal any robust changes in the cell wall. Contrary to the other two families the MIOX gene family had to be identified using a BLAST based approach due to the lack of enough suitable candidate genes for building a hidden markov model. An initial bioinformatic characterization was performed which will lead to further insights into this pathway. In total it was possible to identify the two gene families which are involved in the synthesis of the two pectin backbone sugars galacturonic acid and rhamnose. Moreover with the identification of the MIOX genes a genefamily, important for the supply of nucleotide sugar precursors was identified. In a second part of this thesis publicly available microarray datasets were analyzed with respect to co-responsive behavior of transcripts on a global basis using nearly 10,000 genes. The data has been made available to the community in form of a database providing additional statistical and visualization tools (http://csbdb.mpimp-golm.mpg.de). Using the framework of the database to identify nucleotide sugar converting genes indicated that co-response might be used for identification of novel genes involved in cell wall synthesis based on already known genes.

This volume offers new arguments and perspectives in the ongoing debate about the optimal analysis of verb movement, mainly, but not exclusively, in German. Fanselow and Meinunger deal with verb second (V2) movement in German main clauses. Fanselow argues that head movement of the substitution type follows the standard minimalist conceptions of Merge and Move and is therefore not subject to the same objections as head movement as head adjunction which violates Chomsky's minimalist extension condition, operates countercyclically, and fails to let the moved head c-command its trace. Fanselow argues for V2 movement as head movement of the substitution type. Meinunger discusses a restriction on V2 movement imposed by phrases like "mehr als" ('more than'), as in "Der Wert hat sich weit mehr als verdreifacht" ('the value has far more than tripled') where V2 movement is ruled out (cf. *"Der Wert verdreifachte sich mehr als"). Meinunger claims that this restriction is best analysed in phonological terms: the preposition/complementiser "als" acts as a prefixal clitic to its host, the finite verb, which therefore may not move without it. With respect to the V2 debate, Meinunger argues for an interface perspective. He shows that V2 is restricted from both the conceptual and the phonological interface. Vogel, finally, discusses the syntax of clause-final verbal complexes and their dialectal variation in German. He compares three different syntactic analyses, a minimalist head movement analysis, a minimalist XP movement analysis, and an Optimality theoretic PF movement analysis. The three accounts are evaluated relative to the additional assumptions they have to make, the complications they face and how they fit the observations. Vogel argues in favour of the phonologically oriented OT analysis because of its ability to create a direct link between the coming about of a particular word order pattern and its basically phonological trigger. Each of the three papers recognises the relevance of surface forms in the analysis of German verb movement. They differ, however in the extent to which phonological aspects take part in the explanations they offer.
Taking its departure from the debate on the Iraq war, the article examines three so-called „doctrines“ on European foreign policy. According to the first one, there is no such thing as an EU foreign policy. This may come as a surprise for policy-makers but is a common view among media commentators, analysts and some diplomats. The second doctrine holds that the EU’s foreign policy has been, is, and always will be a failure. Reasons for this gloomy view show considerable variations and are most likely unsustainable in the long run. The third approach is more optimistic, counting on the EU’s material volume, yet often ignoring the need to politically cash in if international clout is the quest.
We study mixed boundary value problems for an elliptic operator A on a manifold X with boundary Y , i.e., Au = f in int X, T±u = g± on int Y±, where Y is subdivided into subsets Y± with an interface Z and boundary conditions T± on Y± that are Shapiro-Lopatinskij elliptic up to Z from the respective sides. We assume that Z ⊂ Y is a manifold with conical singularity v. As an example we consider the Zaremba problem, where A is the Laplacian and T− Dirichlet, T+ Neumann conditions. The problem is treated as a corner boundary value problem near v which is the new point and the main difficulty in this paper. Outside v the problem belongs to the edge calculus as is shown in [3]. With a mixed problem we associate Fredholm operators in weighted corner Sobolev spaces with double weights, under suitable edge conditions along Z \ {v} of trace and potential type. We construct parametrices within the calculus and establish the regularity of solutions.
New chain transfer agents based on dithiobenzoate and trithiocarbonate for free radical polymerization via Reversible Addition-Fragmentation chain Transfer (RAFT) were synthesized. The new compounds bear permanently hydrophilic sulfonate moieties which provide solubility in water independent of the pH. One of them bears a fluorophore, enabling unsymmetrical double end group labelling as well as the preparation of fluorescent labeled polymers. Their stability against hydrolysis in water was studied, and compared with the most frequently employed water-soluble RAFT agent 4-cyano-4-thiobenzoylsulfanylpentanoic acid dithiobenzoate, using UV-Vis and 1H-NMR spectroscopy. An improved resistance to hydrolysis was found for the new RAFT agents, providing good stabilities in the pH range between 1 and 8, and up to temperatures of 70°C. Subsequently, a series of non-ionic, anionic and cationic water-soluble monomers were polymerized via RAFT in water. In these experiments, polymerizations were conducted either at 48°C or 55°C, that are lower than the conventionally employed temperatures (>60°C) for RAFT in organic solvents, in order to minimize hydrolysis of the active chain ends (e.g. dithioester and trithiocarbonate), and thus to obtain good control over the polymerization. Under these conditions, controlled polymerization in aqueous solution was possible with styrenic, acrylic and methacrylic monomers: molar masses increase with conversion, polydispersities are low, and the degree of end group functionalization is high. But polymerizations of methacrylamides were slow at temperatures below 60°C, and showed only moderate control. The RAFT process in water was also proved to be a powerful method to synthesize di- and triblock copolymers including the preparation of functional polymers with complex structure, such as amphiphilic and stimuli-sensitive block copolymers. These include polymers containing one or even two stimuli-sensitive hydrophilic blocks. The hydrophilic character of a single or of several blocks was switched by changing the pH, the temperature or the salt content, to demonstrate the variability of the molecular designs suited for stimuli-sensitive polymeric amphiphiles, and to exemplify the concept of multiple-sensitive systems. Furthermore, stable colloidal block ionomer complexes were prepared by mixing anionic surfactants in aqueous media with a double hydrophilic block copolymer synthesized via RAFT in water. The block copolymer is composed of a noncharged hydrophilic block based on polyethyleneglycol and a cationic block. The complexes prepared with perfluoro decanoate were found so stable that they even withstand dialysis; notably they do not denaturate proteins. So, they are potentially useful for biomedical applications in vivo.
Understanding the formation of stars in galaxies is central to much of modern astrophysics. For several decades it has been thought that the star formation process is primarily controlled by the interplay between gravity and magnetostatic support, modulated by neutral-ion drift. Recently, however, both observational and numerical work has begun to suggest that supersonic interstellar turbulence rather than magnetic fields controls star formation. This review begins with a historical overview of the successes and problems of both the classical dynamical theory of star formation, and the standard theory of magnetostatic support from both observational and theoretical perspectives. We then present the outline of a new paradigm of star formation based on the interplay between supersonic turbulence and self-gravity. Supersonic turbulence can provide support against gravitational collapse on global scales, while at the same time it produces localized density enhancements that allow for collapse on small scales. The efficiency and timescale of stellar birth in Galactic gas clouds strongly depend on the properties of the interstellar turbulent velocity field, with slow, inefficient, isolated star formation being a hallmark of turbulent support, and fast, efficient, clustered star formation occurring in its absence. After discussing in detail various theoretical aspects of supersonic turbulence in compressible self-gravitating gaseous media relevant for star forming interstellar clouds, we explore the consequences of the new theory for both local star formation and galactic scale star formation. The theory predicts that individual star-forming cores are likely not quasi-static objects, but dynamically evolving. Accretion onto these objects will vary with time and depend on the properties of the surrounding turbulent flow. This has important consequences for the resulting stellar mass function. Star formation on scales of galaxies as a whole is expected to be controlled by the balance between gravity and turbulence, just like star formation on scales of individual interstellar gas clouds, but may be modulated by additional effects like cooling and differential rotation. The dominant mechanism for driving interstellar turbulence in star-forming regions of galactic disks appears to be supernovae explosions. In the outer disk of our Milky Way or in low-surface brightness galaxies the coupling of rotation to the gas through magnetic fields or gravity may become important.
Executive responsibility for EU policies is by tradition delegated to the member states and their internal administrative bodies. It is therefore of outmost importance that the new Central and East European members have the capacity to administer the acquis communitaire once they are full members of the EU. Based on a survey among current and former top-level decision-makers (ministers), this article argues that although there are significant implementation problems, efficiency gains can be made through administrative reform and not the least education aimed at changing the worldview and knowledge of the individual civil servant. However, there seem to be significant differences in how these countries tackle implementation problems and administrative reform.
We argue that there is a crucial difference between determiner and adverbial quantification. Following Herburger [2000] and von Fintel [1994], we assume that determiner quantifiers quantify over individuals and adverbial quantifiers over eventualities. While it is usually assumed that the semantics of sentences with determiner quantifiers and those with adverbial quantifiers basically come out the same, we will show by way of new data that quantification over events is more restricted than quantification over individuals. This is because eventualities in contrast to individuals have to be located in time which is done using contextual information according to a pragmatic resolution strategy. If the contextual information and the tense information given in the respective sentence contradict each other, the sentence is uninterpretable. We conclude that this is the reason why in these cases adverbial quantification, i.e. quantification over eventualities, is impossible whereas quantification over individuals is fine.
In this article we study the geometry associated with the sub-elliptic operator ½ (X²1 +X²2), where X1 = ∂x and X2 = x²/2 ∂y are vector fields on R². We show that any point can be connected with the origin by at least one geodesic and we provide an approximate formula for the number of the geodesics between the origin and the points situated outside of the y-axis. We show there are in¯nitely many geodesics between the origin and the points on the y-axis.
This paper offers a new theoretical framework for studying the problem of generations and social change in contemporary Iran. It offers a model which is called „articulation of cultural modes“. The paper agrees with Ronald Inglehart that ‘culture’ is now playing a more dominant role in the social formation of current societies, as ‘technology’ once did in the modern era. But it goes one step further by arguing that culture cannot be approached as a holistic concept building on a comprehensive theoretical framework.
Ellipticity of operators on manifolds with conical singularities or parabolicity on space-time cylinders are known to be linked to parameter-dependent operators (conormal symbols) on a corresponding base manifold. We introduce the conormal symbolic structure for the case of corner manifolds, where the base itself is a manifold with edges and boundary. The specific nature of parameter-dependence requires a systematic approach in terms of meromorphic functions with values in edge-boundary value problems. We develop here a corresponding calculus, and we construct inverses of elliptic elements.
The Apache Modeling Project

This document presents an introduction to the Apache HTTP Server, covering both an overview and implementation details. It presents results of the Apache Modelling Project done by research assistants and students of the Hasso–Plattner–Institute in 2001, 2002 and 2003. The Apache HTTP Server was used to introduce students to the application of the modeling technique FMC, a method that supports transporting knowledge about complex systems in the domain of information processing (software and hardware as well). After an introduction to HTTP servers in general, we will focus on protocols and web technology. Then we will discuss Apache, its operational environment and its extension capabilities— the module API. Finally we will guide the reader through parts of the Apache source code and explain the most important pieces.
The two and k-sample tests of equality of the survival distributions against the alternatives including cross-effects of survival functions, proportional and monotone hazard ratios, are given for the right censored data. The asymptotic power against approaching alternatives is investigated. The tests are applied to the well known chemio and radio therapy data of the Gastrointestinal Tumor Study Group. The P-values for both proposed tests are much smaller then in the case of other known tests. Differently from the test of Stablein and Koutrouvelis the new tests can be applied not only for singly but also to randomly censored data.
We present different tests for phase synchronization which improve the procedures currently used in the literature. This is accomplished by using a two-samples test setup and by utilizing insights and methods from directional statistics and bootstrap theory. The tests differ in the generality of the situation in which they can be applied as well as in their complexity, including computational cost. A modification of the resampling technique of the bootstrap is introduced, making it possible to fully utilize data from time series.
In the recent years there are many researchs discussing the effects of trade policy (tariffs, subsidies etc.) in international trade. The results are manifold. Some authors show that trade policy has negative effects on welfare, some spatial economists demonstrate that trade policy can have positive effects on welfare. This paper considers the effects of the trade policy made by both countries participating in international trade in a spatial economic model. It can be showed that trade policy of both trade partners (tariffs of one country and export subsidies of the other country) can improve the world welfare in comparison with free trade.
