Die Geschichte der deutschen Universitäten in der Zeit des Dreißigjährigen Krieges gehört traditionell nicht zu den bevorzugten Themen der historischen Forschung – weder der universitäts-, noch der militärgeschichtlichen. Dieses ausgesprochene Desiderat hat spezifisch historiographiegeschichtliche Gründe und ist noch heute für viele Verzerrungen und Einseitigkeiten bei der Darstellung dieser für das deutsche Universitätswesen durchaus zäsurhaften Epoche verantwortlich. Die in diesem Heft präsentierten exemplarischen Studien gehen auf Vorträge eines Workshops des Arbeitskreises Militär und Gesellschaft in der Frühen Neuzeit auf Schloss Friedenstein in Gotha im Mai 2010 zurück und verstehen sich als eine erste Annäherung an ein noch weithin offenes, aber keineswegs ausgeschöpftes Forschungsfeld.

Ansätze der materiellen Kulturforschung mit militärgeschichtlichen Fragestellungen zusammenzuführen erscheint naheliegend – ist doch die Welt des Militärs von Dingen geprägt und sind es doch die überlieferten ‚militärischen Artefakte’, wie Waffen, Rüstungen, Ehrenzeichen und Uniformen, die unsere Vorstellungen vom Militär der Frühen Neuzeit erheblich beeinflussen. Dennoch fehlen bisher Untersuchungen, in denen die Fragestellungen des kulturwissenschaftlichen material turn und der frühneuzeitlichen Militärgeschichte aufeinander bezogen werden weitgehend. Das vorliegende Themenheft versteht sich als ein erster Beitrag, diese Lücke zu schließen. Anhand von Untersuchungen zum Umgang mit Dingen und der Bedeutungszuschreibung an Dinge in der militärischen Lebenswelt werden in den Beiträgen so einerseits die Bedeutungsebenen der materiellen Kultur des Militärs und andererseits die Relevanz der materiellen Kultur für die gesellschaftlichen Wahrnehmungsmodi des Militärs als sozialer Gruppe betrachtet. Auf diese Weise gelingt es, mit den Ansätzen der materiellen Kulturforschung innovative Perspektiven auf das Verhältnis von Militär und Gesellschaft zu entwickeln.
Der Arbeitskreis Militär und Gesellschaft in der Frühen Neuzeit e. V. wurde im Frühjahr 1995 gegründet. Er hat es sich zur Aufgabe gemacht, die Erforschung des Militärs im Rahmen der frühneuzeitlichen Geschichte zu befördern und zugleich das Bewusstsein der Frühneuzeit-HistorikerInnen für die Bedeutung des Militärs in all seinen Funktionen zu wecken. Das Militär steht somit als soziale Gruppe selbst im Mittelpunkt der Aktivitäten des Arbeitskreises, wird aber auch in seinen Wirkungen und Repräsentationen thematisiert. Ziel ist es, die Rolle des Militärs als Teil der frühneuzeitlichen Gesellschaft umfassend herauszuarbeiten und zu würdigen. Insofern versteht der AMG seine Arbeit nicht nur als Beitrag zur Militärgeschichte, sondern vor allem als Beitrag zur Geschichte der Frühen Neuzeit insgesamt. Der Arbeitskreis bietet ein Diskussions- und Informationsforum durch die Organisation von Tagungen, die Herausgabe der Schriftenreihe ‚Herrschaft und soziale Systeme in der Frühen Neuzeit‘, die Zeitschrift ‚Militär und Gesellschaft in der Frühen Neuzeit‘ und die Mailingliste mil-fnz.
