This article presents a situation description production experiment investigating the interaction between syntax and information structure in Akan, a tone language that belongs to the Kwa branch of the Niger- Congo family spoken in Ghana. Information structure was elicited via context questions that put the object in narrow informational focus or narrow corrective focus while controlling for the tonal structure of the target word. Contrary to the prediction that corrective focus is marked by fronting and morphological marking of the focused constituent the data suggest that the in-situ strategy is the preferred one.

Background: Soil biota effects are increasingly accepted as an important driver of the abundance and distribution of plants. While biogeographical studies on alien invasive plant species have indicated coevolution with soil biota in their native distribution range, it is unknown whether adaptation to soil biota varies among populations within the native distribution range. The question of local adaptation between plants and their soil biota has important implications for conservation of biodiversity and may justify the use of seed material from local provenances in restoration campaigns.
Methodology/Principal Findings: We studied soil biota effects in ten populations of the steppe grass Stipa capillata from two distinct regions, Europe and Asia. We tested for local adaptation at two different scales, both within (ca. 10-80 km) and between (ca. 3300 km) regions, using a reciprocal inoculation experiment in the greenhouse for nine months. Generally, negative soil biota effects were consistent. However, we did not find evidence for local adaptation: both within and between regions, growth of plants in their 'home soil' was not significantly larger relative to that in soil from other, more distant, populations.
Conclusions/Significance: Our study suggests that negative soil biota effects can prevail in different parts of a plant species' range. Absence of local adaptation points to the possibility of similar rhizosphere biota composition across populations and regions, sufficient gene flow to prevent coevolution, selection in favor of plasticity, or functional redundancy among different soil biota. From the point of view of plant - soil biota interactions, our findings indicate that the current practice of using seeds exclusively from local provenances in ecosystem restoration campaigns may not be justified.
Habitat fragmentation can lead to a decline of genetic diversity, a potential risk for the survival of natural populations. Fragmented populations can become highly differentiated due to reduced gene flow and genetic drift. A decline in number of individuals can result in lower reproductive fitness due to inbreeding effects. We investigated genetic variation within and between 11 populations of the rare and endangered plant Silene chlorantha in northeastern Germany to support conservation strategies. Genetic diversity was evaluated using AFLP techniques and the results were correlated to fitness traits. Fitness evaluation in nature and in a common garden approach was conducted. Our analysis revealed population differentiation was high and within population genetic diversity was intermediate. A clear population structure was supported by a Bayesian approach, AMOVA and neighbour-joining analysis. No correlation between genetic and geographic distance was found. Our results indicate that patterns of population differentiation were mainly caused by temporal and/or spatial isolation and genetic drift. The fitness evaluation revealed that pollinator limitation and habitat quality seem, at present, to be more important to reproductive fitness than genetic diversity by itself. Populations of S. chlorantha with low genetic diversity have the potential to increase in individual number if habitat conditions improve. This was detected in a single large population in the investigation area, which was formerly affected by bottleneck effects.

Academic language should not be a ghetto dialect at odds with ordinary language, but rather an extension that is compatible with lay-language. To define ‘game’ with the unrealistic ambition of satisfying both lay-people and experts should not be a major concern for a game ontology, since the field it addresses is subject to cultural evolution and diachronic change. Instead of the impossible mission of turning the common word into an analytic concept, a useful task for an ontology of games is to model game differences, to show how the things we call games can be different from each other in a number of different ways.

The threshold between the XVth and the XVIth Century represents a historical period during which, both for Christians and for Jews, the geopolitical sceneries and the interior horizons radically change. The modified reality provokes new forms of expectation and the need of new historical interpretations. Ferrara, within this scenery, can be considered, as other Italian cases, as a paradigmatic example, a narrow space where phenomena of spiritual and cultural Jewish rebirth can take shape. The permeability between Christian artistic and cultural world and Jewish intellectual production determines a prosperous context, further strengthened by the introduction of Jewish typography and by a growing claim and restoration of social elective dignity among the Jews of the Este Duchy. After the transfer of the capital city from Ferrara to Modena, the indirect effects of this intellectual resurgence are deeply transformed on a social level, and allows us to catch the persistence of important forms of communication between Christians and Jews in everyday life. The introduction of the Inquisition provides us, through the production of the judicial archive, with the most important instrument to understand social dynamics, which allows us to comprehend a new potential interpretation key for the reality of the ghetto and the choice of its erection. The urban division is nothing else but a new attempt to separate the invisible spaces of the thought. The effective efficacy of the physical separation shows several weak points, which persist during the entire life of the ghetto, since 1638 until 1789.
Die Beziehungen zwischen Juden und Christen in Thessaloniki waren nicht immer konfliktfrei; in der Zwischenkriegszeit herrschten gegenseitiges Misstrauen und Spannungen, die religiös, kulturell und wirtschaftlich motiviert waren. Vor allem der wirtschaftliche Antagonismus zwischen Juden und kleinasiatischen Flüchtlingen nährte den Antisemitismus kleiner extremnationalistischer Gruppen wie der „Nationalen Union Griechenlands“ (EEE), die ihre Feindschaft gegen den „jüdischen Bolschewismus“ offen demonstrierten und deren Aktivitäten vom Staat toleriert wurden. Obwohl sich die Lage seit Mitte der dreißiger Jahre entspannte, waren die alten Ressentiments nicht aus der Welt geschaffen. Nach dem Einmarsch der Wehrmacht in Griechenland im April 1941 war die jüdische Gemeinde den repressiven Maßnahmen der deutschen Besatzungsmacht unterworfen. Die systematische nationalsozialistische Propaganda, gestützt auf die zensierte griechische Presse und örtliche ideologische Kollaborateure, zielte auf die Reaktivierung der alten Gegensätze, um die griechischen Juden zu isolieren. Die Beziehungen zwischen der jüdischen und der christlichen Bevölkerung wurden somit erneut auf die Probe gestellt. Die Errichtung von Ghettobezirken um das Zentrum der Stadt im Frühjahr 1943 bedeutete die Trennung der Juden von der übrigen Bevölkerung. Die Ghettoisierung schuf zwischen ihnen und den Christen eine „Mauer“, die kulturelle und wirtschaftliche Auswirkungen auf das Leben aller Bewohner hatte und letztlich ihre jahrhundertealte Symbiose beendete. In der Alltagspraxis offenbarte sich zugleich, dass diese „Mauer“ nicht ganz unüberwindlich war und neue Formen des Zusammenlebens prägte.
Yoel Hoffmann is an Israeli writer born in 1937 in Brasov (Kronstadt), Romania. Brought up in a German-speaking family, already in his first book, Sefer Yosef (1989), he conveys the voice of German-speaking immigrants in Israel (the “Katschen” story, 1986) and that of the East European Jewish community in Berlin in the late 1930s, on the verge of the Second World War. His works are crammed with characters of Jews from Germany gripped by the memory of the language they abandoned following their emigration to Palestine in the 1930s. The classic one is the character of Bernhard, in the eponymous work. The current article focuses on the representation and elaboration of Hoffmann’s unique creation, in a language influenced by his deep identification with Zen Buddhism on the one hand, and his attraction to the modernist, Western style of stream of consciousness on the other. In central sections of his works, Hoffman presents his entire literary corpus as a type of explicit, allusive, or secret Holocaust literature, and invites his readers and his critics to decode the allusions and expose the secret in this theme, a surprising statement in relation to Hoffmann’s work and its analysis so far. Hoffmann represents the Holocaust as a collective Israeli trauma for which his literary fiction creates a special catalogue of representative characters. In the creation of a catalogue, and particularly one that simultaneously classifies and individualizes, Hoffmann’s project resembles the monumental 1920s cataloguing project by the celebrated German photographer August Sander (Menschen des 20. Jahrhunderts). Hoffmann included photographs from this project in his works, and even chose some of them for the covers of his books. The article examines the implicit relationships between these two creative artists as conferring a meaning so far not considered in the research of the Holocaust theme in Yoel Hoffmann’s writings.

Das Ghetto als Thema der west- und osteuropäischen Literatur wurde zwar lange vernachlässigt, doch ist es vor einigen Jahren zum Gegenstand der Literaturwissenschaft geworden. Zögerlich wächst nun auch das Interesse für die reiche doch oft tragische Geschichte und Kultur der nicht-aschkenasischen Juden, zumal die lange vergessenen jüdischen Flüchtlinge aus den arabischen Ländern ins allgemeine Bewusstsein vorrücken. Einen großen Anteil daran haben neu entstandene Filme, vor allem aber zeitgenössische literarische Werke, die sich diesem Thema widmen. Im Folgenden werden die Bücher über das keineswegs sorglose Leben in den Judenvierteln der Türkei (Istanbul), Marokkos (Marrakesch), Persiens und Iraks (Bagdads) vorgestellt. Berücksichtigung findet hierbei die Sicht der sich bis heute als unterprivilegiert fühlenden orientalischen Juden in den israelischen Einwandererstädten, die als Ghettos empfunden werden. Weder in den Ghettos ihrer Herkunftsländer noch in der neuen Heimat fühlten sich diese Menschen wirklich geborgen, so dass dort wenig vom Zauber des Orients zu finden ist.

Identification of a novel heteroglycan-interacting protein, HIP 1.3, from Arabidopsis thaliana

Plastidial degradation of transitory starch yields mainly maltose and glucose. Following the export into the cytosol, maltose acts as donor for a glucosyl transfer to cytosolic heteroglycans as mediated by a cytosolic transglucosidase (DPE2; EC 2.4.1.25) and the second glucosyl residue is liberated as glucose. The cytosolic phosphorylase (Pho2/PHS2; EC 2.4.1.1) also interacts with heteroglycans using the same intramolecular sites as DPE2. Thus, the two glucosyl transferases interconnect the cytosolic pools of glucose and glucose 1-phosphate. Due to the complex monosaccharide pattern, other heteroglycan-interacting proteins (Hips) are expected to exist.
Identification of those proteins was approached by using two types of affinity chromatography. Heteroglycans from leaves of Arabidopsis thaliana (Col-0) covalently bound to Sepharose served as ligands that were reacted with a complex mixture of buffer-soluble proteins from Arabidopsis leaves. Binding proteins were eluted by sodium chloride. For identification, SDS-PAGE, tryptic digestion and MALDI-TOF analyses were applied. A strongly interacting polypeptide (approximately 40 kDa; designated as HIP1.3) was observed as product of locus At1g09340. Arabidopsis mutants deficient in HIP1.3 were reduced in growth and contained heteroglycans displaying an altered monosaccharide pattern. Wild type plants express HIP1.3 most strongly in leaves. As revealed by immuno fluorescence, HIP1.3 is located in the cytosol of mesophyll cells but mostly associated with the cytosolic surface of the chloroplast envelope membranes. In an HIP1.3-deficient mutant the immunosignal was undetectable. Metabolic profiles from leaves of this mutant and wild type plants as well were determined by GC-MS. As compared to the wild type control, more than ten metabolites, such as ascorbic acid, fructose, fructose bisphosphate, glucose, glycine, were elevated in darkness but decreased in the light. Although the biochemical function of HIP1.3 has not yet been elucidated, it is likely to possess an important function in the central carbon metabolism of higher plants.
Both photoautotrophic and heterotrophic plant cells are capable of accumulating starch inside the plastid. However, depending on the metabolic state of the respective cell the starch-related carbon fluxes are different. The vast majority of the transitory starch biosynthesis relies on the hexose phosphate pools derived from the reductive pentose phosphate cycle and, therefore, is restricted to ongoing photosynthesis. Transitory starch is usually degraded in the subsequent dark period and mainly results in the formation of neutral sugars, such as glucose and maltose, that both are exported into the cytosol. The cytosolic metabolism of the two carbohydrates includes reversible glucosyl transfer reactions to a heteroglycan that are mediated by two glucosyl transferases. DPE2 and PHS2 (or, in all other species, Pho2).
In heterotrophic cells, accumulation of starch mostly depends on the long distance transport of reduced carbon compounds from source to sink organs and, therefore, includes as an essential step the import of carbohydrates from the cytosol into the starch forming plastids.
In this communication, we focus on starch metabolism in heterotrophic tissues from Arabidopsis thaliana wild type plants (and in various starch-related mutants as well). By using hydroponically grown A. thaliana plants, we were able to analyse starch-related biochemical processes in leaves and roots from the same plants. Within the roots we determined starch levels and the morphology of native starch granules. Cytosolic and apoplastic heteroglycans were analysed in roots and compared with those from leaves of the same plants. A. thaliana mutants lacking functional enzymes either inside the plastid (such as phosphoglucomutase) or in the cytosol (disproportionating isoenzyme 2 or the phosphorylase isozyme, PHS2) were included in this study. In roots and leaves from the three mutants (and from the respective wild type organ as well), starch and heteroglycans as well as enzyme patterns were analysed.
Almost all glucosyl transfer reactions rely on glucose-1-phosphate (Glc-1-P) that either immediately acts as glucosyl donor or as substrate for the synthesis of the more widely used Glc dinucleotides, ADPglucose or UDPglucose. In this communication, we have analyzed two Glc-1-P-related processes: the carbon flux from externally supplied Glc-1-P to starch by either mesophyll protoplasts or intact chloroplasts from Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana). When intact protoplasts or chloroplasts are incubated with [U-C-14]Glc-1-P, starch is rapidly labeled. Incorporation into starch is unaffected by the addition of unlabeled Glc-6-P or Glc, indicating a selective flux from Glc-1-P to starch. However, illuminated protoplasts incorporate less C-14 into starch when unlabeled bicarbonate is supplied in addition to the C-14-labeled Glc-1-P. Mesophyll protoplasts incubated with [U-C-14] Glc-1-P incorporate C-14 into the plastidial pool of adenosine diphosphoglucose. Protoplasts prepared from leaves of mutants of Arabidopsis that lack either the plastidial phosphorylase or the phosphoglucomutase isozyme incorporate C-14 derived from external Glc-1-P into starch, but incorporation into starch is insignificant when protoplasts from a mutant possessing a highly reduced ADPglucose pyrophosphorylase activity are studied. Thus, the path of assimilatory starch biosynthesis initiated by extraplastidial Glc-1-P leads to the plastidial pool of adenosine diphosphoglucose, and at this intermediate it is fused with the Calvin cycle-driven route. Mutants lacking the plastidial phosphoglucomutase contain a small yet significant amount of transitory starch.
Alexander von Humboldt verstand sich zwar sicher nicht als Direktor eines Museums, war aber sehr wohl der Welt der Museen, Bibliotheken und Archive nicht nur als Besucher und Leser, sondern auch als Sammler und Forscher verpflichtet. Durch seine Forschungsreisen nach Amerika und Asien vermehrte er im Verlauf eines langen Gelehrtenlebens viele Sammlungen durch eigene Sammeltätigkeit vor Ort. Seine Feldforschung blieb dabei nicht auf naturwissenschaftliche Aspekte begrenzt, sondern bezog ganz selbstverständlich auch die verschiedenartigsten kulturwissenschaftlichen Forschungsgegenstände mitein. Diese transdisziplinär agierende Praxis im Feld lässt sich zugleich als eine transareale, einzelne Areas übergreifende und damit im Sinne von TransArea Studies aus den Beziehungen, Zirkulationen und Wechselwirkungen jenseits des bloß Territorialen sich speisende Wissenschaftskonzeption begreifen. So lässt sich in seiner Auseinandersetzung mit der amerikanischen Tropenwelt eine doppelte transareale Relationalität erkennen, die einerseits intern die Tropenwelt unterschiedlicher Kontinente miteinander verbindet, andererseits aber extern die Tropen insbesondere mit den gemäßigten Zonen in Relation setzt, um dadurch erst globale Zusammenhänge - einschließlich der sich verändernden Schneegrenzen oder der Wanderungsbewegungen der Pflanzenformen, für die sich die mobile Wissenschaft Humboldts in besonderem Maße interessierte - skizzieren und erläutern zu können. Die Tropen sind für ihn die Zone höchster Mannigfaltigkeit und Vielverbundenheit - oder um es mit heutigen Begriffen zum Ausdruck zu bringen: die TransArea par excellence.

Transarea studies focus upon spaces as created by the movements that criss-cross them. From this point of view, from its very beginnings, literature is closely interrelated with a vectorial (and much less with a purely spatial) conception of history - and with urbanity, which plays a decisive role in Gilgamesh's travels through a (narrative) cosmos centered upon the city of Uruk. This article explores the city as a transareal space of movement in three examples of literature, with no fixed abode, around the turn of the millennium, i.e. Assia Djebar's Les Nuits de Strasbourg, Emine Sevgi Oezdamar's Istanbul-Berlin Trilogy, and Cecile Wajsbrot's L'ile aux musees. These three writers project, in a very specific way, cities in motion as anagrammatic and fractal structures.

Cultures and societies develop in a certain moment and within a certain context an awareness of how to live together, which not only has to be enriched continuously, but can also be lost or destroyed to a greater or smaller measure. Literature is, in its capacity as highly dynamic and interactive heritage and generator of life knowledge, that multilingual wisdom, which in dense form can find basic gnosemes of a good living, knowing how to survive and how to live together, which are crucial for the future of our planet and its very different manifestations of life.

This essay shows in what sense Alexander von Humboldt created a new discourse on the New World. In his view of the Americas, he was able to subvert the dominantly spatial history of the 'new hemisphere' found in Cornelius de Pauw or Guillaume-Thomas Raynal by introducing dynamic and vectorial structures that allow us to focus on the Americas not as 'the other' but as a highly interrelated part of the world. Humboldt's Weltbewusstsein ('world consciousness') develops a new discourse that can be best understood as a complex answer to the second period of accelerated globalisation.

Simultaneous limitation of plant growth by two or more nutrients is increasingly acknowledged as a common phenomenon in nature, but its cellular mechanisms are far from understood. We investigated the uptake kinetics of CO(2) and phosphorus of the algae Chlamydomonas acidophila in response to growth at limiting conditions of CO(2) and phosphorus. In addition, we fitted the data to four different Monod-type models: one assuming Liebigs Law of the minimum, one assuming that the affinity for the uptake of one nutrient is not influenced by the supply of the other (independent colimitation) and two where the uptake affinity for one nutrient depends on the supply of the other (dependent colimitation). In addition we asked whether the physiological response under colimitation differs from that under single nutrient limitation. We found no negative correlation between the affinities for uptake of the two nutrients, thereby rejecting a dependent colimitation. Kinetic data were supported by a better model fit assuming independent uptake of colimiting nutrients than when assuming Liebigs Law of the minimum or a dependent colimitation. Results show that cell nutrient homeostasis regulated nutrient acquisition which resulted in a trade-off in the maximum uptake rates of CO(2) and phosphorus, possibly driven by space limitation on the cell membrane for porters for the different nutrients. Hence, the response to colimitation deviated from that to a single nutrient limitation. In conclusion, responses to single nutrient limitation cannot be extrapolated to situations where multiple nutrients are limiting, which calls for colimitation experiments and models to properly predict growth responses to a changing natural environment. These deviations from single nutrient limitation response under colimiting conditions and independent colimitation may also hold for other nutrients in algae and in higher plants.
1. Herbivores show stronger control of element homoeostasis than primary producers, which can lead to constraints in carbon and nutrient transfer efficiencies from plants to animals. Insufficient dietary phosphorus (P) availability can cause reduced body P contents along with lower growth rates of animals, leading to a positive relationship between growth and body P.
2. We examined how a second limiting food component in combination with dietary P limitation influences growth and P homoeostasis of a herbivore and how this colimitation influences the hypothesized positive correlation between body P content and growth rates. Therefore, we investigated the responses in somatic growth and P stoichiometry of Daphnia magna raised on a range of diets with different amounts of P and the sterol cholesterol.
3. Somatic growth rates of D. magna increased asymptotically with increasing P as well as with increasing cholesterol availability. The body P content increased with increasing dietary P and stabilized at high dietary P availability. The observed plasticity in D. magna's P stoichiometry became stronger with increasing cholesterol availability, i.e. with decreasing colimitation by cholesterol.
4. At P-limiting conditions, the positive correlation between body P content and growth rate, as predicted by the growth rate hypothesis (GRH) applied to the within-species level, declined with increasing cholesterol limitation and disappeared entirely when cholesterol was not supplied. Thus, even when Daphnia shows no growth response owing to strong limitation by the colimiting nutrient, the body P content may vary substantially, calling into question the unconditional use of herbivores' P content as predictor of a potential P limitation in nature.
5. The observed interaction between dietary P and cholesterol on Daphnia's growth and stoichiometry can be used as a conceptual framework of how colimiting essential nutrients affect herbivore homoeostasis, and provide further insights into the applicability of the GRH within a consumer species.
The CO2 acquisition was analyzed in Chlamydomonas acidophila at pH 2.4 in a range of medium P and Fe concentrations and at high and low CO2 condition. The inorganic carbon concentrating factor (CCF) was related to cellular P quota (Q(p)), maximum CO2-uptake rate by photosynthesis (V-max; O-2), half saturation constant for CO2 uptake (K-0.5), and medium Fe concentration. There was no effect of the medium Fe concentration on the CCF. The CCF increased with increasing Q(p) in both high and low CO2 grown algae, but maximum Q(p) was 6-fold higher in the low CO2 cells. In high CO2 conditions, the CCF was low, ranging between 0.8 and 3.5. High CCF values up to 9.1 were only observed in CO2-limited cells, but P- and CO2-colimited cells had a low CCF. High CCF did not relate with a low K-0.5 as all CO2-limited cells had a low K-0.5 (<4 mu M CO2). High Ci-pools in cells with high Qp suggested the presence of an active CO2-uptake mechanism. The CCF also increased with increasing V-max; O-2 which reflect an adaptation to the nutrient in highest demand (CO2) under balanced growth conditions. It is proposed that the size of the CCF in C. acidophila is more strongly related to porter density for CO2 uptake (reflected in V-max; O-2) and less- to high-affinity CO2 uptake (low K-0.5) at balanced growth. In addition, high CCF can only be realized with high Q(p).
The extremophilic microalga Chlamydomonas acidophila inhabits very acidic waters (pH 2-3.5), where its growth is often limited by phosphorus (P) or colimited by P and inorganic carbon (CO(2)). Because this alga is a major food source for predators in acidic habitats, we studied its fatty acid content, which reflects their quality as food, grown under a combination of P-limited and different carbon conditions (either mixotrophically with light + glucose or at high or low CO(2), both without glucose). The fatty acid composition largely depended on the cellular P content: stringent P-limited cells had a higher total fatty acid concentration and had a lower percentage of polyunsaturated fatty acids. An additional limitation for CO(2) inhibited this decrease, especially reflected in enhanced concentrations of 18:3(9,12,15) and 16:4(3,7,10,13), resulting in cells relatively rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids under colimiting growth conditions. The percentage of polyunsaturated to total fatty acid content was positively related with maximum photosynthesis under all conditions applied. The two factors, P and CO(2), thus interact in their effect on the fatty acid composition in C. acidophila, and colimited cells P-limited algae can be considered a superior food source for herbivores because of the high total fatty acid content and relative richness in polyunsaturated fatty acids.
We present data on eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA)-limited growth responses of Daphnia magna under different temperatures and different dietary cholesterol availabilities to assess how EPA growth saturation thresholds depend on changing environmental conditions. D. magna was raised on gradients of dietary EPA at 15 degrees C and 20 degrees C with high cholesterol supply and at 20 degrees C with low and high cholesterol supply in laboratory experiments. A new method was applied to estimate EPA growth saturation thresholds on the basis of fitted saturation curves using bootstrapped data. The EPA threshold at which 75% and 90% of maximum growth was reached ranged from 0.7 to 1.6 mu g EPA (mg dietary C)(-1) and 2.0 to 4.9 mu g EPA (mg dietary C)(-1), respectively. Previously reported EPA concentrations in natural seston of many different lakes suggest that the thresholds measured here indicate a frequent potential for at least moderate EPA limitation in nature. Furthermore, the calculated EPA thresholds were higher in treatments of low compared with high temperature and higher in treatments of low compared with high cholesterol availability. The EPA-dependent growth responses were more strongly affected by temperature than by cholesterol availability. Our results suggest that EPA growth saturation thresholds for a particular Daphnia species probably vary in nature under different environmental conditions.

The problem of an ensemble Kalman filter when only partial observations are available is considered. In particular, the situation is investigated where the observational space consists of variables that are directly observable with known observational error, and of variables of which only their climatic variance and mean are given. To limit the variance of the latter poorly resolved variables a variance-limiting Kalman filter (VLKF) is derived in a variational setting. The VLKF for a simple linear toy model is analyzed and its range of optimal performance is determined. The VLKF is explored in an ensemble transform setting for the Lorenz-96 system, and it is shown that incorporating the information of the variance of some unobservable variables can improve the skill and also increase the stability of the data assimilation procedure.

»Warum erregt der geplante Abriss eines Bahnhofs die Nation, während gegen das hundertfache Sterben von Bibliotheken immer nur ein paar Stimmen laut werden? Wo sind die Wutbürger, wenn man sie braucht?«, überlegte sich hierzulande Tilman Spreckelsen.1 Die Kernfrage lautet also: Stehen die Bürger eigentlich hinter der Bibliothek? Ob und wie die Bürgerschaft für ihre Öffentliche Bibliothek entscheidet, wenn sie entscheiden darf, wird im vorliegenden Aufsatz thematisiert. Ergebnisse von Bürgerbegehren und Bürgerentscheiden stehen dabei im Fokus, da bürgerschaftliches Engagement bei diesen Mitwirkungsinstrumenten besonders gefragt ist und es gleichzeitig kommunalpolitische Folgen haben kann. Am Beispiel von Stuttgart 21 wird darüber hinaus der Fragestellung nachgegangen, wie sich eine Öffentliche Bibliothek zu Sachverhalten positioniert, die (nicht nur) kommunalpolitisch brisant sind.
We define several notions of singular set for Type-I Ricci flows and show that they all coincide. In order to do this, we prove that blow-ups around singular points converge to nontrivial gradient shrinking solitons, thus extending work of Naber [15]. As a by-product we conclude that the volume of a finite-volume singular set vanishes at the singular time.
We also define a notion of density for Type-I Ricci flows and use it to prove a regularity theorem reminiscent of White's partial regularity result for mean curvature flow [22].
From CDM to REDD+ - what do we know for setting up effective and legitimate carbon governance?

This article compares two carbon governance instruments - the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) and Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation (REDD+) - to assess lessons from the former for the latter regarding effectiveness and legitimacy of such instruments. The article argues that the CDM has a relatively high degree of output-oriented legitimacy resulting in effectiveness and some input-oriented legitimacy, with few discernible tradeoffs between them. In contrasting this to REDD+, the hypotheses are advanced that (i) output-oriented legitimacy/effectiveness can again be achieved but that (ii) a higher degree of input-oriented legitimacy is necessary for REDD+ and thus also a certain trade-off between the two forms of legitimacy can be expected. This is shown through comparing the technologies and methodologies, economic rationales, political support, regulatory structures, and environmental impacts of both instruments.
The conclusion to the special section has three objectives: First, it argues that a focus on "practice" implicitly connects all the articles in the special section and thereby reinforces the core points of the analytical framework introduced by Fuchs and Glaab. Second, the paper summarizes the main messages of the articles by identifying three red threads that are dominant in all four contributions. These are the strong focus of all authors on ideational forces, an emphasis on the role of academics and the description of complexities of local-global interdependencies. Third, some common blind spots are identified that merit future research.

Folter ist ein Akt extremer kollektiver Gewalt, der im Auftrag eines Staates im Geheimen ausgeübt wird. Die Frage, was Menschen dazu bringt, anderen Menschen diese extreme Gewalt anzutun, verengt den Blick für ein Verständnis der Folter allzu schnell auf individualistische Erklärungsversuche. Der vorliegende Aufsatz geht im Gegensatz dazu von der Gruppe der Folterer aus und rückt die sozialen Beziehungen dieser Form der Vergesellschaftung und die von ihnen ausgehenden sozialen Dynamiken und Effekte in den Mittelpunkt. In einem ersten Schritt werden Georg Simmels formale Bestimmungen der geheimen Gesellschaft rekonstruiert und auf die geheime Gesellschaft der Folterer angewandt und spezifiziert; auf dieser Grundlage werden im zweiten Schritt Handlungsbedingungen der Mitglieder der geheimen Gesellschaft der Folterer herausgearbeitet; der dritte Schritt bestimmt die eigendynamischen Prozesse des Phänomens der Folter, die aus der Eskalation politischer Konflikte, der Gruppe der Folterer und der Situation der Folter erwachsen. Die These lautet, dass sich aus der Perspektive einer relationalen Soziologie ein theoretischer Zugriff auf das Problem der Folter ergibt, der weiterführende Erklärungen des Phänomens ermöglicht.

Torture is an extreme act of collective violence that is secretly executed in the name of a state. In order to explain the reasons why people torture others, individualist approaches concentrate on individuals' motives or interests. Contrary to that, the article argues that torture should be understood as a social relation. Thus, it takes the social relations of the group of torturers as a starting point. Firstly, following Georg Simmel's analysis of the secret society the paper argues that the group of torturers can adequately be conceptualized as a secret society; secondly, against this background the article reconstructs the conditions which structure torturers' agency; finally, this article offers an outline of the processes and dynamics that allows for explaining the phenomenon of torture. The thesis of the article argues that a relational sociology helps better explain and understand the social phenomenon of torture.
The new pi-conjugated 1,2,3-triazol-1,4-diyl fluoroionophore 1 generated via Cu(I) catalyzed [3 + 2] cycloaddition shows high fluorescence enhancement factors (FEF) in the presence of Na+ (FEF = 58) and K+ (FEF = 27) in MeCN and high selectivity towards K+ under simulated physiological conditions (160 mM K+ or Na+, respectively) with a FEF of 2.5 for K+.
Glacial advances constrained by Be-10 exposure dating of bedrock landslides, Kyrgyz Tien Shan

Numerous large landslide deposits occur in the Tien Shan, a tectonically active intraplate orogen in Central Asia. Yet their significance in Quaternary landscape evolution and natural hazard assessment remains unresolved due to the lack of "absolute" age constraints. Here we present the first Be-10 exposure ages for three prominent (>10(7) m(3)) bedrock landslides that blocked major rivers and formed lakes, two of which subsequently breached, in the northern Kyrgyz Tien Shan. Three Be-10 ages reveal that one landslide in the Alamyedin River occurred at 11-15 ka, which is consistent with two C-14 ages of gastropod shells from reworked loess capping the landslide. One large landslide in Aksu River is among the oldest documented in semi-arid continental interiors, with a Be-10 age of 63-67 ka. The Ukok River landslide deposit(s) yielded variable Be-10 ages, which may result from multiple landslides, and inheritance of Be-10. Two Be-10 ages of 8.2 and 5.9 ka suggest that one major landslide occurred in the early to mid-Holocene, followed by at least one other event between 1.5 and 0.4 ka. Judging from the regional glacial chronology, all three landslides have occurred between major regional glacial advances. Whereas Alamyedin and Ukok can be considered as postglacial in this context, Aksu is of interglacial age. None of the landslide deposits show traces of glacial erosion, hence their locations and I Be ages mark maximum extents and minimum ages of glacial advances, respectively. Using toe-to-headwall altitude ratios of 0.4-0.5, we reconstruct minimum equilibrium-line altitudes that exceed previous estimates by as much as 400 m along the moister northern fringe of the Tien Shan. Our data show that deposits from large landslides can provide valuable spatio-temporal constraints for glacial advances in landscapes where moraines and glacial deposits have low preservation potential. Context. Extrapolations of solar photospheric vector magnetograms into three-dimensional magnetic fields in the chromosphere and corona are usually done under the assumption that the fields are force-free. This condition is violated in the photosphere itself and a thin layer in the lower atmosphere above. The field calculations can be improved by preprocessing the photospheric magnetograms. The intention here is to remove a non-force-free component from the data.
Aims. We compare two preprocessing methods presently in use, namely the methods of Wiegelmann et al. (2006, Sol. Phys., 233, 215) and Fuhrmann et al. (2007, A&A, 476, 349).
Methods. The two preprocessing methods were applied to a vector magnetogram of the recently observed active region NOAA AR 10 953. We examine the changes in the magnetogram effected by the two preprocessing algorithms. Furthermore, the original magnetogram and the two preprocessed magnetograms were each used as input data for nonlinear force-free field extrapolations by means of two different methods, and we analyze the resulting fields.
Results. Both preprocessing methods managed to significantly decrease the magnetic forces and magnetic torques that act through the magnetogram area and that can cause incompatibilities with the assumption of force-freeness in the solution domain. The force and torque decrease is stronger for the Fuhrmann et al. method. Both methods also reduced the amount of small-scale irregularities in the observed photospheric field, which can sharply worsen the quality of the solutions. For the chosen parameter set, the Wiegelmann et al. method led to greater changes in strong-field areas, leaving weak-field areas mostly unchanged, and thus providing an approximation of the magnetic field vector in the chromosphere, while the Fuhrmann et al. method weakly changed the whole magnetogram, thereby better preserving patterns present in the original magnetogram. Both preprocessing methods raised the magnetic energy content of the extrapolated fields to values above the minimum energy, corresponding to the potential field. Also, the fields calculated from the preprocessed magnetograms fulfill the solenoidal condition better than those calculated without preprocessing.
In Czech, German, and many other languages, part of the semantic focus of the utterance can be moved to the left periphery of the clause. The main generalization is that only the leftmost accented part of the semantic focus can be moved. We propose that movement to the left periphery is generally triggered by an unspecific edge feature of C (Chomsky 2008) and its restrictions can be attributed to requirements of cyclic linearization, modifying the theory of cyclic linearization developed by Fox and Pesetsky (2005). The crucial assumption is that structural accent is a direct consequence of being linearized at merge, thus it is indirectly relevant for (locality restrictions on) movement. The absence of structural accent correlates with givenness. Given elements may later receive (topic or contrastive) accents, which accounts for fronting in multiple focus/contrastive topic constructions. Without any additional assumptions, the model can account for movement of pragmatically unmarked elements to the left periphery ('formal fronting', Frey 2005). Crucially, the analysis makes no reference at all to concepts of information structure in the syntax, in line with the claim of Chomsky (2008) that UG specifies no direct link between syntax and information structure.
The claim that focus evokes a set of alternatives is a central issue in several accounts of the effects of focus on interpretation. This article presents two empirical studies that examine whether this property of focus is independent of contextual conditions. The syntactic operation at issue is object-fronting in German, Spanish, Greek, and Hungarian licensed by contexts involving focus on the object constituent. This operation evokes the intuition that the fronted referent excludes some or all relevant alternatives. The presented experiments deal with the question whether this interpretative property obligatorily accompanies the operation at issue or not. The empirical findings show that in German, Spanish, and Greek this intuition depends on properties of the context and is sensitive to the interaction with further discourse factors (in particular, the predictability of the referent). Hungarian displays a different data pattern: our data does not provide evidence that the syntactic operation at issue depends on the context or interacts with further discourse factors. This finding is in line with the view that evoking alternatives is inherent part of constituent-fronting in this language.
This article deals with the claim that the MAGNITUDE ESTIMATION (ME) method of gathering acceptability judgments produces data that are more informative for linguists than binary or n-point scale judgments. We performed three acceptability-rating experiments that directly compared ME data to binary and seven-point scale data. The results clearly falsify the hypothesis that data gathered by the ME method carry a larger amount of information about the acceptability of a given linguistic phenomenon. The three measures are largely equivalent with respect to informativity. Moreover, ME judgments are shown to be more liable to producing spurious variance under certain circumstances.*
This article presents several acceptability rating experiments concerned with crossing wh-movement in German multiple questions. Our results show that there is no general superiority effect in German, thus refuting claims to the contrary by Featherston (2005). However, acceptability is reduced when a wh-phrase crosses a wh-subject with which it agrees in animacy. We explain this finding in terms of the availability of different sorting keys for the answers to the multiple questions.
