No tenemos parecidas noticias sobre el recuerdo local en cuanto a Humboldt como lo tenemos en el caso de las cartas de Ferdinand Bellermann en Venezuela. Lo que si tenemos son las fuentes en Kraków que demuestran el gran impacto de Humboldt entre la élite política y económica en la Habana (1800-1830) y a la vez sus redes de comunicación. En la historia intelectual de Cuba el nombre de Humboldt esta intimamente ligado con el cosmopolitismo de las élites hispano-cubanas (Arango, conde Villanueva, Sagra, Saco) como con el concepto de la nación cubana (Luz y Caballero, Vidal Morales y Morales, Leuchsenring, Ortiz, Barnet y otros). Los últimos ganaron la hegemonía discursiva e hicieron a Humboldt “suyo” (“segundo descubridor de Cuba”), aunque este Humboldt eurocriollo para ellos también tenía la función de impedir cambios fundamentales en el sistema de esclavitud o comportamiento frente a los problemas de la post-emancipación en Cuba.
El paso de Alexander von Humboldt por Cuba en 1801 y en 1804, devino en un acontecimiento trascendental para la ciencia y la historiografía de la Mayor de las Antillas. Su estancia le permitió recopilar información, hacer experimentos científicos y entrar en contacto con la realidad de la colonia española en un momento de grandes cambios para su destino, cuando se inicia el despegue definitivo de la plantación esclavista, que la convirtió en el principal productor y exportador de azúcar y por un tiempo de café. El trabajo que se presenta analiza las impresiones críticas de Humboldt sobre los cambios económico-sociales y ambientales de la época y, en especial, el legado que sus opiniones y su obra representaron para el ambientalismo cubano desde el siglo XIX hasta el establecimiento, en 1996, del Parque Nacional que lleva su nombre, uno de los ecosistemas montañosos de mayor riqueza y endemismo en el planeta, declarado en 2001 por la UNESCO Patrimonio de la Humanidad.
El Ensayo Político sobre la isla de Cuba de Humboldt constituye un importante estudio sobre el pensamiento de los hacendados y de los funcionarios coloniales de La Habana, quienes fueron sus principales colaboradores durante el período 1801-1826. En correspondencia con sus ideas de progreso humano, Humboldt criticó la influencia del pensamiento, basado en la explotación de la fuerza de trabajo esclava, en los problemas de carácter científico, social y económico de la Isla. Por eso Humboldt se preocupó por las aspiraciones políticas de los hacendados. Sin embargo, casi no señala el programa reformista efectuado por el Intendente Alejandro Ramírez. Por otra parte, Humboldt desconoció el pensamiento de progreso de un grupo de profesores y estudiantes del Colegio Seminario de San Carlos en La Habana. Sus primeros contactos con este pensamiento ocurrieron en Europa después de haberse publicado su Ensayo en 1826.
Eine besondere Rolle in Alexander von Humboldts amerikanischen Reisebericht spielt die Insel Cuba. Im Angesicht ihrer kolonialen Sklavereiwirtschaft gerät die optimistische Geschichtsphilosophie der europäischen Aufklärung in eine Krise, und die Widersprüche des Humboldtschen Diskurses treten zutage. Dieses Phänomen läßt sich insbesondere literaturwissenschaftlich analysieren: Alexander von Humboldt entwirft Cuba als einen poetischen Raum, in dem alles mehrdeutig wird. Der Text gestaltet bereits die Annäherung während der Überfahrt aus Venezuela dramaturgisch als Irritation der Wahrnehmung; der Landgang in Havanna wird inszeniert als Kontrast gegensätzlicher Eindrücke; die symbolisch-topographische Funktion Cubas in Humboldts geographischer Imagination ist eine in verschiedener Hinsicht intermediäre; und sogar Humboldts philosophisch-ästhetische Terminologie erfährt in Cuba eine semantische Aufladung mit einem ökonomisch-politischen Doppelsinn.
