Edge representations of operators on closed manifolds are known to induce large classes of operators that are elliptic on specific manifolds with edges, cf. [9]. We apply this idea to the case of boundary value problems. We establish a correspondence between standard ellipticity and ellipticity with respect to the principal symbolic hierarchy of the edge algebra of boundary value problems, where an embedded submanifold on the boundary plays the role of an edge. We first consider the case that the weight is equal to the smoothness and calculate the dimensions of kernels and cokernels of the associated principal edge symbols. Then we pass to elliptic edge operators for arbitrary weights and construct the additional edge conditions by applying relative index results for conormal symbols.
The ellipticity of boundary value problems on a smooth manifold with boundary relies on a two-component principal symbolic structure (σψ; σ∂), consisting of interior and boundary symbols. In the case of a smooth edge on manifolds with boundary we have a third symbolic component, namely the edge symbol σ∧, referring to extra conditions on the edge, analogously as boundary conditions. Apart from such conditions in integral form' there may exist singular trace conditions, investigated in [6] on closed' manifolds with edge. Here we concentrate on the phenomena in combination with boundary conditions and edge problem.
Green operators on manifolds with edges are known to be an ingredient of parametrices of elliptic (edge-degenerate) operators. They play a similar role as corresponding operators in boundary value problems. Close to edge singularities the Green operators have a very complex asymptotic behaviour. We give a new characterisation of Green edge symbols in terms of kernels with discrete and continuous asymptotics in the axial variable of local model cones.
On a compact closed manifold with edges live pseudodifferential operators which are block matrices of operators with additional edge conditions like boundary conditions in boundary value problems. They include Green, trace and potential operators along the edges, act in a kind of Sobolev spaces and form an algebra with a wealthy symbolic structure. We consider complexes of Fréchet spaces whose differentials are given by operators in this algebra. Since the algebra in question is a microlocalization of the Lie algebra of typical vector fields on a manifold with edges, such complexes are of great geometric interest. In particular, the de Rham and Dolbeault complexes on manifolds with edges fit into this framework. To each complex there correspond two sequences of symbols, one of the two controls the interior ellipticity while the other sequence controls the ellipticity at the edges. The elliptic complexes prove to be Fredholm, i.e., have a finite-dimensional cohomology. Using specific tools in the algebra of pseudodifferential operators we develop a Hodge theory for elliptic complexes and outline a few applications thereof.
We describe a new algebra of boundary value problems which contains Lopatinskii elliptic as well as Toeplitz type conditions. These latter are necessary, if an analogue of the Atiyah-Bott obstruction does not vanish. Every elliptic operator is proved to admit up to a stabilisation elliptic conditions of such a kind. Corresponding boundary value problems are then Fredholm in adequate scales of spaces. The crucial novelty consists of the new type of weighted Sobolev spaces which serve as domains of pseudodifferential operators and which fit well to the nature of operators.
We consider a homogeneous pseudodifferential equation on a cylinder C = IR x X over a smooth compact closed manifold X whose symbol extends to a meromorphic function on the complex plane with values in the algebra of pseudodifferential operators over X. When assuming the symbol to be independent on the variable t element IR, we show an explicit formula for solutions of the equation. Namely, to each non-bijectivity point of the symbol in the complex plane there corresponds a finite-dimensional space of solutions, every solution being the residue of a meromorphic form manufactured from the inverse symbol. In particular, for differential equations we recover Euler's theorem on the exponential solutions. Our setting is model for the analysis on manifolds with conical points since C can be thought of as a 'stretched' manifold with conical points at t = -infinite and t = infinite.
The aim of this book is to develop the Lefschetz fixed point theory for elliptic complexes of pseudodifferential operators on manifolds with edges. The general Lefschetz theory contains the index theory as a special case, while the case to be studied is much more easier than the index problem. The main topics are: - The calculus of pseudodifferential operators on manifolds with edges, especially symbol structures (inner as well as edge symbols). - The concept of ellipticity, parametrix constructions, elliptic regularity in Sobolev spaces. - Hodge theory for elliptic complexes of pseudodifferential operators on manifolds with edges. - Development of the algebraic constructions for these complexes, such as homotopy, tensor products, duality. - A generalization of the fixed point formula of Atiyah and Bott for the case of simple fixed points. - Development of the fixed point formula also in the case of non-simple fixed points, provided that the complex consists of diferential operarators only. - Investigation of geometric complexes (such as, for instance, the de Rham complex and the Dolbeault complex). Results in this direction are desirable because of both purely mathe matical reasons and applications in natural sciences.
The paper contains the proof of the index formula for manifolds with conical points. For operators subject to an additional condition of spectral symmetry, the index is expressed as the sum of multiplicities of spectral points of the conormal symbol (indicial family) and the integral from the Atiyah-Singer form over the smooth part of the manifold. The obtained formula is illustrated by the example of the Euler operator on a two-dimensional manifold with conical singular point.
We construct a theory of general boundary value problems for differential operators whose symbols do not necessarily satisfy the Atiyah-Bott condition [3] of vanishing of the corresponding obstruction. A condition for these problems to be Fredholm is introduced and the corresponding finiteness theorems are proved.
The homotopy classification and the index of boundary value problems for general elliptic operators
(1999)
We give the homotopy classification and compute the index of boundary value problems for elliptic equations. The classical case of operators that satisfy the Atiyah-Bott condition is studied first. We also consider the general case of boundary value problems for operators that do not necessarily satisfy the Atiyah-Bott condition.
We prove the existence of a limit in Hm(D) of iterations of a double layer potential constructed from the Hodge parametrix on a smooth compact manifold with boundary, X, and a crack S ⊂ ∂D, D being a domain in X. Using this result we obtain formulas for Sobolev solutions to the Cauchy problem in D with data on S, for an elliptic operator A of order m ≥ 1, whenever these solutions exist. This representation involves the sum of a series whose terms are iterations of the double layer potential. A similar regularisation is constructed also for a mixed problem in D.
Boundary value problems for pseudodifferential operators (with or without the transmission property) are characterised as a substructure of the edge pseudodifferential calculus with constant discrete asymptotics. The boundary in this case is the edge and the inner normal the model cone of local wedges. Elliptic boundary value problems for non-integer powers of the Laplace symbol belong to the examples as well as problems for the identity in the interior with a prescribed number of trace and potential conditions. Transmission operators are characterised as smoothing Mellin and Green operators with meromorphic symbols.

The paper deals with the calculation of the fractional part of the η-invariant for elliptic self-adjoint operators in topological terms. The method used to obtain the corresponding formula is based on the index theorem for elliptic operators in subspaces obtained in [1], [2]. It also utilizes K-theory with coefficients Zsub(n). In particular, it is shown that the group K(T*M,Zsub(n)) is realized by elliptic operators (symbols) acting in appropriate subspaces.
In this paper we establish the regularity, exponential stability of global (weak) solutions and existence of uniform compact attractors of semiprocesses, which are generated by the global solutions, of a two-parameter family of operators for the nonlinear 1-d non-autonomous viscoelasticity. We employ the properties of the analytic semigroup to show the compactness for the semiprocess generated by the global solutions.
For elliptic operators on manifolds with boundary, we define spectral boundary value problems, which generalize the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer problem to the case of nonhomogeneous boundary conditions, operators of arbitrary order, and nonself-adjoint conormal symbols. The Fredholm property is proved and equivalence with certain elliptic equations on manifolds with conical singularities is established.
The quantization of contact transformations of the cosphere bundle over a manifold with conical singularities is described. The index of Fredholm operators given by this quantization is calculated. The answer is given in terms of the Epstein-Melrose contact degree and the conormal symbol of the corresponding operator.
We investigate crack problems, where the crack boundary has conical singularities. Elliptic operators with two-sided elliptc boundary conditions on the plus and minus sides of the crack will be interpreted as elements of a corner algebra of boundary value problems. The corresponding operators will be completed by extra edge conditions on the crack boundary to Fredholm operators in corner Sobolev spaces with double weights, and there are parametrices within the calculus.
Differential and pseudo-differential operators on a manifold with (regular) geometric singularities can be studied within a calculus, inspired by the concept of classical pseudo-differential operators on a C1 manifold. In the singular case the operators form an algebra with a principal symbolic hierarchy σ = (σj)0≤j≤k, with k being the order of the singularity and σk operator-valued for k ≥ 1. The symbols determine ellipticity and the nature of parametrices. It is typical in this theory that, similarly as in boundary value problems (which are special edge problems, where the edge is just the boundary), there are trace, potential and Green operators, associated with the various strata of the configuration. The operators, obtained from the symbols by various quantisations, act in weighted distribution spaces with multiple weights. We outline some essential elements of this calculus, give examples and also comment on new challenges and interesting problems of the recent development.
We give a survey on the calculus of (pseudo-differential) boundary value problems with the transmision property at the boundary, and ellipticity in the Shapiro-Lopatinskij sense. Apart from the original results of the work of Boutet de Monvel we present an approach based on the ideas of the edge calculus. In a final section we introduce symbols with the anti-transmission property.
We give a brief survey on some new developments on elliptic operators on manifolds with polyhedral singularities. The material essentially corresponds to a talk given by the author during the Conference “Elliptic and Hyperbolic Equations on Singular Spaces”, October 27 - 31, 2008, at the MSRI, University of Berkeley.
On a manifold with edge we construct a specific class of (edgedegenerate) elliptic differential operators. The ellipticity refers to the principal symbolic structure σ = (σψ, σ^) of the edge calculus consisting of the interior and edge symbol, denoted by σψ and σ^, respectively. For our choice of weights the ellipticity will not require additional edge conditions of trace or potential type, and the operators will induce isomorphisms between the respective edge spaces.

Toeplitz operators, and ellipticity of boundary value problems with global projection conditions
(2003)
Ellipticity of (pseudo-) differential operators A on a compact manifold X with boundary (or with edges) Y is connected with boundary (or edge) conditions of trace and potential type, formulated in terms of global projections on Y together with an additional symbolic structure. This gives rise to operator block matrices A with A in the upper left corner. We study an algebra of such operators, where ellipticity is equivalent to the Fredhom property in suitable scales of spaces: Sobolev spaces on X plus closed subspaces of Sobolev spaces on Y which are the range of corresponding pseudo-differential projections. Moreover, we express parametrices of elliptic elements within our algebra and discuss spectral boundary value problems for differential operators.
Problems for elliptic partial differential equations on manifolds M with singularities M' (here with piece-wise smooth geometry)are studied in terms of pseudo-differential algebras with hierarchies of symbols that consist of scalar and operator-valued components. Classical boundary value problems (with or without the transmission property) belong to the examples. They are a model for operator algebras on manifolds M with higher "polyhedral" singularities. The operators are block matrices that have upper left corners containing the pseudo-differential operators on the regular M\M' (plus certain Mellin and Green summands) and are degenerate (in streched coordinates) in a typical way near M'. By definition M' is again a manifold with singularities. The same is true of M'', and so on. The block matrices consist of trace, potential and Mellin and Green operators, acting between weighted Sobolev spaces on M(j) and M(k), with 0 ≤ j, k ≤ ord M; here M(0) denotes M, M(1) denotes M', etc. We generate these algebras, including their symbol hierarchies, by iterating so-called "edgifications" and "conifications" os algebras that have already been constructed, and we study ellipicity, parametrics and Fredholm property within these algebras.
We construct an algebra of pseudo-differential boundary value problems that contains the classical Shapiro-Lopatinskij elliptic problems as well as all differential elliptic problems of Dirac type with APS boundary conditions, together with their parametrices. Global pseudo-differential projections on the boundary are used to define ellipticity and to show the Fredholm property in suitable scales of spaces.
We consider edge-degenerate families of pseudodifferential boundary value problems on a semi-infinite cylinder and study the behavior of their push-forwards as the cylinder is blown up to a cone near infinity. We show that the transformed symbols belong to a particularly convenient symbol class. This result has applications in the Fredholm theory of boundary value problems on manifolds with edges.
In the paper we study the possibility to represent the index formula for spectral boundary value problems as a sum of two terms, the first one being homotopy invariant of the principal symbol, while the second depends on the conormal symbol of the problem only. The answer is given in analytical, as well as in topological terms.
The paper is devoted to pseudodifferential boundary value problems in domains with cuspidal wedges. Concerning the geometry we even admit a more general behaviour, namely oscillating cuspidal wedges. We show a criterion for the Fredholm property of a boundary value problem and derive estimates of solutions close to edges.
For a domain D subset of IRn with singular points on the boundary and a weight function ω infinitely differentiable away from the singularpoints in D, we consider a C*-algebra G (D; ω) of operators acting in the weighted space L² (D, ω). It is generated by the operators XD F-¹ σ F XD where σ is a homogeneous function. We show that the techniques of limit operators apply to define a symbol algebra for G (D; ω). When combined with the local principle, this leads to describing the Fredholm operators in G (D; ω).
The paper is devoted to pseudodifferential boundary value problems in domains with singular points on the boundary. The tangent cone at a singular point is allowed to degenerate. In particular, the boundary may rotate and oscillate in a neighbourhood of such a point. We show a criterion for the Fredholm property of a boundary value problem and derive estimates of solutions close to singular points.
As is known from Kondratyev's work, boundary value problems for elliptic operators on a manifold with conical singularities and boundary are controlled by a principal symbolic hierarchy, where the conormal symbols belong to the typical new components, compared with the smooth case, with interior and boundary symbols. A similar picture may be expected on manifolds with corners when the base of the cone itself is a manifold with conical or edge singularities. This is a natural situation in a number of applications, though with essential new difficulties. We investigate here corresponding conormal symbols in terms of a calculus of holomorphic parameter-dependent edge boundary value problems on the base. We show that a certain kernel cut-off procedure generates all such holomorphic families, modulo smoothing elements, and we establish conormal symbols as an algebra as is necessary for a parametrix constructions in the elliptic case.
We prove a theorem describing the behaviour of the relative index of families of Fredholm operators under surgery performed on spaces where the operators act. In connection with additional conditions (like symmetry conditions) this theorem results in index formulas for given operator families. By way of an example, we give an application to index theory of families of boundary value problems.

For elliptic problems on manifolds with edges, we construct index formulas in form of a sum of homotopy invariant contributions of the strata (the interior of the manifold and the edge). Both terms are the indices of elliptic operators, one of which acts in spaces of sections of finite-dimensional vector bundles on a compact closed manifold and the other in spaces of sections of infinite-dimensional vector bundles over the edge.

When studyind elliptic operators on manifolds with nonisolated singularities one naturally encounters families of conormal symbols (i.e. operators elliptic with parameter p ∈ IR in the sense of Agranovich-Vishik) parametrized by the set of singular points. For homotopies of such families we define the notion of spectral flow, which in this case is an element of the K-group of the parameter space. We prove that the spectral flow is equal to the index of some family of operators on the infinite cone.

Quantization methods in differential equations : Chapter 2: Quantization of Lagrangian modules
(1999)
In this chapter we use the wave packet transform described in Chapter 1 to quantize extended classical states represented by so-called Lagrangian sumbanifolds of the phase space. Functions on a Lagrangian manifold form a module over the ring of classical Hamiltonian functions on the phase space (with respect to pointwise multiplication). The quantization procedure intertwines this multiplication with the action of the corresponding quantum Hamiltonians; hence we speak of quantization of Lagrangian modules. The semiclassical states obtained by this quantization procedure provide asymptotic solutions to differential equations with a small parameter. Locally, such solutions can be represented by WKB elements. Global solutions are given by Maslov's canonical operator [2]; also see, e.g., [3] and the references therein. Here the canonical operator is obtained in the framework of the universal quantization procedure provided by the wave packet transform. This procedure was suggested in [4] (see also the references there) and further developed in [5]; our exposition is in the spirit of these papers. Some further bibliographical remarks can be found in the beginning of Chapter 1.
We discuss the Cauchy problem for the Dolbeault cohomology in a domain of C n with data on a part of the boundary. In this setting we introduce the concept of a Carleman function which proves useful in the study of uniqueness. Apart from an abstract framework we show explicit Carleman formulas for the Dolbeault cohomology.
Operators on manifolds with corners that have base configurations with geometric singularities can be analysed in the frame of a conormal symbolic structure which is in spirit similar to the one for conical singularities of Kondrat'ev's work. Solvability of elliptic equations and asymptotics of solutions are determined by meromorphic conormal symbols. We study the case when the base has edge singularities which is a natural assumption in a number of applications. There are new phenomena, caused by a specific kind of higher degeneracy of the underlying symbols. We introduce an algebra of meromorphic edge operators that depend on complex parameters and investigate meromorphic inverses in the parameter-dependent elliptic case. Among the examples are resolvents of elliptic differential operators on manifolds with edges.
We construct elliptic elements in the algebra of (classical pseudo-differential) operators on a manifold M with conical singularities. The ellipticity of any such operator A refers to a pair of principal symbols (σ0, σ1) where σ0 is the standard (degenerate) homogeneous principal symbol, and σ1 is the so-called conormal symbol, depending on the complex Mellin covariable z. The conormal symbol, responsible for the conical singularity, is operator-valued and acts in Sobolev spaces on the base X of the cone. The σ1-ellipticity is a bijectivity condition for all z of real part (n + 1)/2 − γ, n = dimX, for some weight γ. In general, we have to rule out a discrete set of exceptional weights that depends on A. We show that for every operator A which is elliptic with respect to σ0, and for any real weight γ there is a smoothing Mellin operator F in the cone algebra such that A + F is elliptic including σ1. Moreover, we apply the results to ellipticity and index of (operator-valued) edge symbols from the calculus on manifolds with edges.
The inhomogeneous ∂-equations is an inexhaustible source of locally unsolvable equations, subelliptic estimates and other phenomena in partial differential equations. Loosely speaking, for the anaysis on complex manifolds with boundary nonelliptic problems are typical rather than elliptic ones. Using explicit integral representations we assign a Fredholm complex to the Dolbeault complex over an arbitrary bounded domain in C up(n).

We consider general parabolic systems of equations on the infinite time interval in case of the underlying spatial configuration is a closed manifold. The solvability of equations is studied both with respect to time and spatial variables in exponentially weighted anisotropic Sobolev spaces, and existence and maximal regularity statements for parabolic equations are proved. Moreover, we analyze the long-time behaiour of solutions in terms of complete asymptotic expansions. These results are deduced from a pseudodifferential calculus that we construct explicitly. This algebra of operators is specifically designed to contain both the classical systems of parabolic equations of general form and their inverses, parabolicity being reflected purely on symbolic level. To this end, we assign t = ∞ the meaning of an anisotropic conical point, and prove that this interprtation is consistent with the natural setting in the analysis of parabolic PDE. Hence, major parts of this work consist of the construction of an appropriate anisotropiccone calculus of so-called Volterra operators. In particular, which is the most important aspect, we obtain the complete characterization of the microlocal and the global kernel structure of the inverse of parabolicsystems in an infinite space-time cylinder. Moreover, we obtain perturbation results for parabolic equations from the investigation of the ideal structure of the calculus.

Ellipticity of operators on manifolds with conical singularities or parabolicity on space-time cylinders are known to be linked to parameter-dependent operators (conormal symbols) on a corresponding base manifold. We introduce the conormal symbolic structure for the case of corner manifolds, where the base itself is a manifold with edges and boundary. The specific nature of parameter-dependence requires a systematic approach in terms of meromorphic functions with values in edge-boundary value problems. We develop here a corresponding calculus, and we construct inverses of elliptic elements.
We construct a new calculus of boundary value problems with the transmission property on a non-compact smooth manifold with boundary and conical exits to infinity. The symbols are classical both in covariables and variables. The operators are determined by principal symbol tuples modulo operators of lower orders and weights (such remainders are compact in weighted Sobolev spaces). We develop the concept of ellipticity, construct parametrices within the algebra and obtain the Fredholm property. For the existence of Shapiro-Lopatinskij elliptic boundary conditions to a given elliptic operator we prove an analogue of the Atiyah-Bott condition.
Crack problems are regarded as elements in a pseudo-differential algbra, where the two sdes int S± of the crack S are treated as interior boundaries and the boundary Y of the crack as an edge singularity. We employ the pseudo-differential calculus of boundary value problems with the transmission property near int S± and the edge pseudo-differential calculus (in a variant with Douglis-Nirenberg orders) to construct parametrices od elliptic crack problems (with extra trace and potential conditions along Y) and to characterise asymptotics of solutions near Y (expressed in the framework of continuous asymptotics). Our operator algebra with boundary and edge symbols contains new weight and order conventions that are necessary also for the more general calculus on manifolds with boundary and edges.
We study boundary-contact problems for elliptic equations (and systems) with interfaces that have edge singularities. Such problems represent continuous operators between weighted edge spaces and subspaces with asymptotics. Ellipticity is formulated in terms of a principal symbolic hierarchy, containing interior, transmission, and edge symbols. We construct parametrices, show regularity with asymptotics of solutions in weighted edge spaces and illustrate the results by boundary-contact problems for the Laplacian with jumping coefficients.
Boundary value problems for (pseudo-) differential operators on a manifold with edges can be characterised by a hierarchy of symbols. The symbol structure is responsible or ellipicity and for the nature of parametrices within an algebra of "edge-degenerate" pseudo-differential operators. The edge symbol component of that hierarchy takes values in boundary value problems on an infinite model cone, with edge variables and covariables as parameters. Edge symbols play a crucial role in this theory, in particular, the contribution with holomorphic operatot-valued Mellin symbols. We establish a calculus in s framework of "twisted homogenity" that refers to strongly continuous groups of isomorphisms on weighted cone Sobolev spaces. We then derive an equivalent representation with a particularly transparent composition behaviour.
Boundary value problems on manifolds with conical singularities or edges contain potential operators as well as trace and Green operators which play a similar role as the corresponding operators in (pseudo-differential) boundary value problems on a smooth manifold. There is then a specific asymptotic behaviour of these operators close to the singularities. We characterise potential operators in terms of actions of cone or edge pseudo-differential operators (in the neighbouring space) on densities supported by sbmanifolds which also have conical or edge singularities. As a byproduct we show the continuity of such potentials as continuous perators between cone or edge Sobolev spaces and subspaces with asymptotics.
We establish a new calculus of pseudodifferential operators on a manifold with smooth edges and study ellipticity with extra trace and potential conditions (as well as Green operators) at the edge. In contrast to the known scenario with conditions of that kind in integral form we admit in this paper ‘singular’ trace, potential and Green operators, which are related to the corresponding operators of positive type in Boutet de Monvel’s calculus for boundary value problems.

We study elliptic boundary value problems in a wedge with additional edge conditions of trace and potential type. We compute the (difference of the) number of such conditions in terms of the Fredholm index of the principal edge symbol. The task will be reduced to the case of special opening angles, together with a homotopy argument.
We study mixed boundary value problems for an elliptic operator A on a manifold X with boundary Y , i.e., Au = f in int X, T±u = g± on int Y±, where Y is subdivided into subsets Y± with an interface Z and boundary conditions T± on Y± that are Shapiro-Lopatinskij elliptic up to Z from the respective sides. We assume that Z ⊂ Y is a manifold with conical singularity v. As an example we consider the Zaremba problem, where A is the Laplacian and T− Dirichlet, T+ Neumann conditions. The problem is treated as a corner boundary value problem near v which is the new point and the main difficulty in this paper. Outside v the problem belongs to the edge calculus as is shown in [3]. With a mixed problem we associate Fredholm operators in weighted corner Sobolev spaces with double weights, under suitable edge conditions along Z \ {v} of trace and potential type. We construct parametrices within the calculus and establish the regularity of solutions.
We study pseudodifferential operators on a cylinder IR x B with cross section B that conical singularities. Configurations of that kind are the local model of cornere singularities with base spaces B. Operators A in our calculus are assumed to have symbols α which are meromorphic in the complex covariable with values in the space of all cone operators on B. In case α is dependent of the axial variable t ∈ IR, we show an explicit formula for solutions of the homogeneous equation. Each non-bjectivity point of the symbol in the complex plane corresponds to a finite-dimensional space of solutions. Moreover, we give a relative index formula.
Mixed elliptic problems are characterised by conditions that have a discontinuity on an interface of the boundary of codimension 1. The case of a smooth interface is treated in [3]; the investigation there refers to additional interface conditions and parametrices in standard Sobolev spaces. The present paper studies a necessary structure for the case of interfaces with conical singularities, namely, corner conormal symbols of such operators. These may be interpreted as families of mixed elliptic problems on a manifold with smooth interface. We mainly focus on second order operators and additional interface conditions that are holomorphic in an extra parameter. In particular, for the case of the Zaremba problem we explicitly obtain the number of potential conditions in this context. The inverses of conormal symbols are meromorphic families of pseudo-differential mixed problems referring to a smooth interface. Pointwise they can be computed along the lines [3].
Given an algebra of pseudo-differential operators on a manifold, an elliptic element is said to be a reduction of orders, if it induces isomorphisms of Sobolev spaces with a corresponding shift of smoothness. Reductions of orders on a manifold with boundary refer to boundary value problems. We consider smooth symbols and ellipticity without additional boundary conditions which is the relevant case on a manifold with boundary. Starting from a class of symbols that has been investigated before for integer orders in boundary value problems with the transmission property we study operators of arbitrary real orders that play a similar role for operators without the transmission property. Moreover, we show that order reducing symbols have the Volterra property and are parabolic of anisotropy 1; analogous relations are formulated for arbitrary anisotropies. We finally investigate parameter-dependent operators, apply a kernel cut-off construction with respect to the parameter and show that corresponding holomorphic operator-valued Mellin symbols reduce orders in weighted Sobolev spaces on a cone with boundary.
We study the asymptotic regularity of solutions of Hartree-Fock equations for Coulomb systems. In order to deal with singular Coulomb potentials, Fock operators are discussed within the calculus of pseudo-differential operators on conical manifolds. First, the non-self-consistent-field case is considered which means that the functions that enter into the nonlinear terms are not the eigenfunctions of the Fock operator itself. We introduce asymptotic regularity conditions on the functions that build up the Fock operator which guarantee ellipticity for the local part of the Fock operator on the open stretched cone R+ × S². This proves existence of a parametrix with a corresponding smoothing remainder from which it follows, via a bootstrap argument, that the eigenfunctions of the Fock operator again satisfy asymptotic regularity conditions. Using a fixed-point approach based on Cances and Le Bris analysis of the level-shifting algorithm, we show via another bootstrap argument, that the corresponding self-consistent-field solutions of the Hartree-Fock equation have the same type of asymptotic regularity.
The primary motivation for systematic bases in first principles electronic structure simulations is to derive physical and chemical properties of molecules and solids with predetermined accuracy. This requires a detailed understanding of the asymptotic behaviour of many-particle Coulomb systems near coalescence points of particles. Singular analysis provides a convenient framework to study the asymptotic behaviour of wavefunctions near these singularities. In the present work, we want to introduce the mathematical framework of singular analysis and discuss a novel asymptotic parametrix construction for Hamiltonians of many-particle Coulomb systems. This corresponds to the construction of an approximate inverse of a Hamiltonian operator with remainder given by a so-called Green operator. The Green operator encodes essential asymptotic information and we present as our main result an explicit asymptotic formula for this operator. First applications to many-particle models in quantum chemistry are presented in order to demonstrate the feasibility of our approach. The focus is on the asymptotic behaviour of ladder diagrams, which provide the dominant contribution to shortrange correlation in coupled cluster theory. Furthermore, we discuss possible consequences of our asymptotic analysis with respect to adaptive wavelet approximation.
We introduce a natural symmetry condition for a pseudodifferential operator on a manifold with cylindrical ends ensuring that the operator admits a doubling across the boundary. For such operators we prove an explicit index formula containing, apart from the Atiyah-Singer integral, a finite number of residues of the logarithmic derivative of the conormal symbol.
For general elliptic pseudodifferential operators on manifolds with singular points, we prove an algebraic index formula. In this formula the symbolic contributions from the interior and from the singular points are explicitly singled out. For two-dimensional manifolds, the interior contribution is reduced to the Atiyah-Singer integral over the cosphere bundle while two additional terms arise. The first of the two is one half of the 'eta' invariant associated to the conormal symbol of the operator at singular points. The second term is also completely determined by the conormal symbol. The example of the Cauchy-Riemann operator on the complex plane shows that all the three terms may be non-zero.
