The dimension of a variety V of algebras of a given type was introduced by E. Graczynska and D. Schweigert in [7] as the cardinality of the set of all derived varieties of V which are properly contained in V. In this paper, we characterize all solid varieties of dimensions 0, 1, and 2; prove that the dimension of a variety of finite type is at most N-0; give an example of a variety which has infinite dimension; and show that for every n is an element of N there is a variety with dimension n. Finally, we show that the dimension of a variety is related to the concept of the semantical kernel of a hypersubstitution and apply this connection to calculate the dimension of the class of all algebras of type tau = (n).
An n-ary cooperation is a mapping from a nonempty set A to the nth copower of A. A clone of cooperations is a set of cooperations which is closed under superposition and contains all injections. Coalgebras are pairs consisting of a set and a set of cooperations defined on this set. We define terms for coalgebras, coidentities and cohyperidentities. These concepts will be applied to give a new solution of the completeness problem for clones of cooperations defined on a two-element set and to separate clones of cooperations by coidentities.
Arenes with various alkyl side-chains were synthesized in high yields and excellent regioselectivities. Starting from toluic and naphthoic acids, the carboxylate group was conveniently substituted by alkyl halides by Birch reduction and subsequent decarbonylation. The method is characterized by inexpensive starting materials and reagents, and methylation of arenes was realized. Besides simple alkyl substituents, the scope of arene functionalization was extended by benzyl, fluoro, amino, and ester groups. We were able to control the alkylation of 1-naphthoic acid during Birch reduction by the addition of tert-butanol. This allowed the regioselective synthesis of mono and bis-substituted naphthalenes from the same starting material.

We discuss the relaxation of a class of nonlinear elliptic Cauchy problems with data on a piece S of the boundary surface by means of a variational approach known in the optimal control literature as "equation error method". By the Cauchy problem is meant any boundary value problem for an unknown function y in a domain X with the property that the data on S, if combined with the differential equations in X, allow one to determine all derivatives of y on S by means of functional equations. In the case of real analytic data of the Cauchy problem, the existence of a local solution near S is guaranteed by the Cauchy-Kovalevskaya theorem. We also admit overdetermined elliptic systems, in which case the set of those Cauchy data on S for which the Cauchy problem is solvable is very "thin". For this reason we discuss a variational setting of the Cauchy problem which always possesses a generalised solution.

Precision farming overcomes the paradigm of uniform field treatment by site-specific data acquisition and treatment to cope with within-field variability. Precision farming heavily relies on spatially dense information about soil and crop status. While it is often difficult and expensive to obtain precise soil information by traditional soil sampling and laboratory analysis some geophysical methods offer means to obtain subsidiary data in an efficient way. In particular, geoelectrical soil mapping has become widely accepted in precision farming. At present it is the most successful geophysical method providing the spatial distribution of relevant agronomic information that enables us to determine management zones for precision farming. Much work has been done to test the applicability of existing geoelectrical methods and to develop measurement systems applicable in the context of precision farming. Therefore, the aim of this paper was to introduce the basic ideas of precision farming, to discuss current precision farming applied geoelectrical methods and instruments and to give an overview about our corresponding activities during recent years. Different experiments were performed both in the laboratory and in the field to estimate first, electrical conductivity affecting factors, second, relationships between direct push and surface measurements, third, the seasonal stability of electrical conductivity patterns and fourth, the relationship between plant yield and electrical conductivity. From the results of these experiments, we concluded that soil texture is a very dominant factor in electrical conductivity mapping. Soil moisture affects both the level and the dynamic range of electrical conductivity readings. Nevertheless, electrical conductivity measurements can be principally performed independent of season. However, electrical conductivity field mapping does not produce reliable maps of spatial particle size distribution of soils, e.g., necessary to generate input parameters for water and nutrient transport models. The missing step to achieve this aim may be to develop multi-sensor systems that allow adjusting the electrical conductivity measurement from the influence of different soil water contents.
Single station seismic noise measurements were carried out at 192 sites in the western part of Istanbul, Turkey. This extensive survey allowed the fundamental resonance frequency of the sedimentary cover to be mapped, and identify areas prone to site amplification. The results are in good agreement with the geological distribution of sedimentary units, indicating a progressive decrease of the fundamental resonance frequencies from the northeastern part, where the bedrock outcrops, towards the southwestern side, where a thickness of some hundreds meters for the sedimentary cover is estimated. The particular distribution of fundamental resonance frequencies indicates that local amplification of the ground motion might play a significative role in explaining the anomalous damage distribution after the 17 August 1999 Kocaeli Earthquake. Furthermore, 2D array measurements of seismic noise were performed in the metropolitan area with the aim of obtaining a preliminary geophysical characterization of the different sedimentary covers. These measurements allow the estimation of the shear-wave velocity profile for some representative areas and the identification of the presence of strong impedance contrast responsible of seismic ground motion amplification. Comparison of a theoretical site response from an estimated S-wave velocity profile with an empirical one based on earthquake recordings strongly encourages the use of the low cost seismic noise techniques for the study of seismic site effects.
To study the applicability of the passive seismic interferometry technique to near-surface geological studies, seismic noise recordings from a small scale 2-D array of seismic stations were performed in the test site of Nauen (Germany). Rayleigh wave Green's functions were estimated for different frequencies. A tomographic inversion of the traveltimes estimated for each frequency from the Green's functions is then performed, allowing the laterally varying 3-D surfacewave velocity structure below the array to be retrieved at engineering-geotechnical scales. Furthermore, a 2-D S-wave velocity cross-section is obtained by combining 1-D velocity structures derived from the inversion of the dispersion curves extracted at several points along a profile where other geophysical analyses were performed. It is shown that the cross-section from passive seismic interferometry provides a clear image of the local structural heterogeneities that are in excellent agreement with georadar and geoelectrical results. Such findings indicate that the interferometry analysis of seismic noise is potentially of great interest for deriving the shallow 3-D velocity structure in urban areas.
In this work, we analyse continuous measurements of microseisms to assess the reliability of the fundamental resonance frequency estimated by means of the horizontal-to-vertical (H/V) spectral ratio within the 0.1-1 Hz frequency range, using short-period sensors (natural period of 1 s). We apply the H/V technique to recordings of stations installed in two alluvial basins with different sedimentary cover thicknesses-the Lower Rhine Embayment (Germany) and the Gubbio Plain (Central Italy). The spectral ratios are estimated over the time-frequency domain, and we discuss the reliability of the results considering both the variability of the microseism activity and the amplitude of the instrumental noise. We show that microseisms measured by short period sensors allow the retrieval of fundamental resonance frequencies greater than about 0.1-0.2 Hz, with this lower frequency bound depending on the relative amplitude of the microseism signal and the self-noise of the instruments. In particular, we show an example where the considered short-period sensor is connected to instruments characterized by an instrumental noise level which allows detecting only fundamental frequencies greater than about 0.4 Hz. Since the frequency at which the peak of the H/V spectral ratio is biased depends upon the seismic signal-to-instrument noise ratio, the power spectral amplitude of instrumental self- noise should be always considered when interpreting the frequency of the peak as the fundamental resonance frequency of the investigated site.
P>A vertical array of accelerometers was installed in Atakoy (western Istanbul) with the long-term aim of improving our understanding of in situ soil behaviour, to assess the modelling and parametric uncertainties associated with the employed methodologies for strong-motion site-response analysis, and for shallow geological investigations. Geotechnical and geophysical investigations were carried out to define the subsoil structure at the selected site. Data associated with 10 earthquakes (2.7 < M < 4.3) collected during the first months of operation of the array were used to image the upgoing and downgoing waves by deconvolution of waveforms recorded at different depths. Results have shown that the velocity of propagation of the imaged upgoing and downgoing waves in the borehole is consistent with that of S or P waves, depending on the component of ground acceleration analysed but independent of the chosen signal window. In particular, an excellent agreement was found between the observed upgoing and downgoing wave traveltimes and the ones calculated using a model derived by seismic noise analysis of array data. The presence of a smaller pulse on the waveforms obtained by deconvolution of the horizontal components suggests both internal S-wave reflection and S-to-P mode conversion, as well as a not normal incidence of the wavefield. The presence of a pulse propagating with S-wave velocity in the uppermost 25 m in the waveforms obtained by the deconvolution of the vertical components suggests P-to-S mode conversion. These evidences imply that, even when site amplification is mainly related to 1-D effects, the standard practice in engineering seismology of deconvolving the surface recording down to the bedrock using an approximate S-wave transfer function (generally valid for vertical incidence of SH waves) might lead to errors in the estimation of the input ground motion required in engineering calculations. Finally, downgoing waves with significant amplitudes were found down to 70 m and even to 140 m depth. This result provides a warning about the use of shallow borehole recordings as input for the numerical simulation of ground motion and for the derivation of ground motion prediction relationships.

Using the timing flexibility of modern automatic test equipment (ATE) test response data can be compacted without the need for additional X-masking logic. In this article the test response is compacted by several multiple input shift registers without feedback (NF-MISR). The shift registers are running on a k-times higher clock frequency than the test clock. For each test clock cycle only one out of the k outputs of each shift register is evaluated by the ATE. The impact of consecutive X values within the scan chains is reduced by a periodic permutation of the NF-MISR inputs. As a result, no additional external control signals or test set dependent control logic is required. The benefits of the proposed method are shown by the example of an implementation on a Verigy ATE. Experiments on three industrial circuits demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach in comparison to a commercial DFT solution.
This article traces the influences which American pragmatist philosophy and Dewey's pragmatist aesthetics in particular received from the various idealist traditions of (a) the English romantic philosopher-poets, (b) Cambridge Hegelians in the vein of Josiah Royce, (c-f) three different generations of Oxford Hegelians, from Bosanquet to Collingwood, and, most directly relevant for Dewey's philosophical development, (g) the late 19th century St. Louis Hegelians William Torrey Harris and George Silvester Morris. Another important influence for Dewey's pragmatism, as well as already for Bosanquet, was Darwinian evolutionary thought with its emphasis on the needs for adaptation. Central points of interest in the development of Dewey's aesthetics which he shared to some degree with the British and American idealists were the concept of aesthetic experience, the cognitive relevance of imaginative experiences and the practical relevance of fine art for developing shared forms of life.

In order to consistently approximate the thermal vertical structure of past upper water columns, Mg/Ca ratios of eight planktonic foraminiferal species with different preferential calcification depths selected from 76 tropical Atlantic and Caribbean sediment-surface samples were calibrated with delta O-18-derived calcification temperatures with an overall range of approximate to 8-28 degrees C. Extending the broad number of species-specific calibrations, which agree well especially with our shallow-dweller calibrations, this study presents new bulk calcite Mg/Ca vs. calcification temperature relationships for shallow-dwelling Globigerinoides ruber pink, thermocline-dwelling Globorotalia menardii, and deep-dwelling Globorotalia truncatulinoides dextral and Globorotalia crassaformis not separately calibrated before. The species-specific temperature sensitivities are relatively similar (approximate to 7- 11% increase in Mg/Ca per 1 degrees C), yet y-axis intercepts vary from 0.23-0.65 for the shallow and thermocline dwellers to 0.83-1.32 for the deep dwellers. Based on these differences, we established a 'warm water' calibration for temperatures > 19 degrees C (Mg/Ca=0.29.exp(0.101.T): r=0.90; shallow and thermocline dwellers) and a 'cold water' calibration for temperatures < 15 degrees C (Mg/Ca=0.84.exp(0.083.T); r=0.85; deep dwellers). These calibrations are offset by approximate to 8 degrees C. This maybe significant for paleotemperature reconstructions, which are afflicted with the problem that similar Mg/Ca offsets are probably characteristic of extinct species used to calculate past temperatures.
Males often face strong mating competition by neighboring males in their social environment. A recent study by Plath et al. (Anim Behav 75:21-29, 2008a) has demonstrated that the visual presence of a male competitor (i.e., an audience male) affects the expression of male mating preferences in a poeciliid fish (Poecilia mexicana) with a weaker expression of mating preferences when an audience male observed the focal male. This may be a tactic to reduce sperm competition, since surrounding males likely share intrinsic preferences for female traits or copy mate choice decisions. Here, we examined the hypothesis that a same-sex audience would affect female mate preferences less than male mating preferences. Our hypothesis was based on the assumptions that (1) competition for mates in a fashion that would be comparable in strength to sperm competition or overt male-male aggression is absent among Poecilia females, and (2) P. mexicana females typically form female-biased shoals, such that almost any female mate choice in nature occurs in front of a female audience. Poecilia females (P. mexicana, surface and cave form, and the closely related gynogenetic Poecilia formosa) were given a choice between a large and a small male, and the tests were repeated while a conspecific, a heterospecific, or no audience female (control) was presented. Females spent more time in the neutral zone and, thus, less time near the males during the second part of a trial when an audience was presented, but-consistent with predictions-females showed only slightly weaker expression of mate preferences during the second part of the tests. This decline was not specific to the treatment involving an audience and was significantly weaker than the effect seen in the male sex.
Orbiniid phylogeny is matter of debate and incongruence between hypothesis based on molecules and morphology has been repeatedly reported. Moreover, the phylogenetic position of the "oligochaetoid polychaetes" of the taxon Questa varies between morphological and molecular cladistic analyses. Here, we present a nearly complete mitochondrial genome of Questa ersei. The mitochondrial gene order is roughly identical to known orbiniid taxa. Several translocations of tRNAs are unique to Orbiniidae and Questa when compared to other annelid mitochondrial genomes. Additionally, we assembled sequence data of six genes (18S, 16S, cox1, cox3, nad1, nad4) for a representative orbiniid taxon sampling and analysed all data in concatenation using Maximum Likelihood and Bayesian inference. For comparison with morphology we compiled a morphological data matrix for all taxa included in our molecular analyses. Our results strongly support a close relationship of Questa with orbiniids (sequence data, gene order, an 18 bp indel, morphology), and a position nested within orbiniids is recovered in our sequence based analyses. We demonstrate remarkable incongruence of most included morphological characters with the recovered best ML tree and suppose that repeated independent character loss might be an explanation.
Using degenerate primers, we were able to identify seven Hox genes for the myzostomid Myzostoma cirriferum. The recovered fragments belong to anterior class (Mci_lab, Mci_pb), central class (Mci_Dfd, Mci_Lox5, Mci_Antp, Mci_Lox4), and posterior class (Mci_Post2) paralog groups. Orthology assignment was verified by phylogenetic analyses and presence of diagnostic regions in the homeodomain as well as flanking regions. The presence of Lox5, Lox4, and Post2 supports the inclusion of Myzostomida within Lophotrochozoa. We found signature residues within flanking regions of Lox5, which are also found in annelids, but not in Platyhelminthes. As such the available Hox genes data of myzostomids support an annelid relationship.
We analyzed mtDNA polymorphisms (parts of control region, ND5, ND2, Cytb, 12S, together 902 bp) in 59 scat and 18 tissue samples from 13 Indian populations of the critically endangered Indian tiger (Panthera tigris tigris), along with zoo animals as reference. Northern tiger populations exhibit two unique haplotypes suggesting genetic isolation. Western populations from Sariska (extinct in 2004) and Ranthambore are genetically similar, such that Ranthambore could serve as a source for reintroduction in Sariska. Zoo populations maintain mitochondrial lineages that are rare or absent in the wild.
It is well established that reproductive isolation often arises from genome incompatibilities and that genes encoding reproductive traits are less prone to introgression. Hybrid zones of Mytilus trossulus and Mytilus edulis provide an intriguing model to assess reproductive isolation. Although gene flow is restricted in North America, introgression is pervasive in the Baltic. This study aimed at analyzing the shape of multilocus clines across the Baltic contact zone between M. edulis and M. trossulus to infer mechanisms of restriction to gene flow. We use maximum likelihood methods to construct the best fitting individual clines for five markers located on biparentally inherited autosomes and paternally and maternally inherited mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA). Strong cline shape differences among markers suggest that reproductive isolation arising from genome-wide incompatibilities is weak, and that these discrepancies possibly result from genetic drift, hybrid zone movement or marker-specific selection. However, the finding of a common cline center for M7 lysin (involved in fertilization) and paternally transmitted mtDNA (causing nuclear-mitochondrial incompatibilities in hybrids) suggest that these loci may play a role in incomplete reproductive isolation.

Molecular modeling calculations using DFT at the B3LYP/6-31G(d,p) level of theory have been performed on diastereomeric complexes formed between chiral carboxylate anions and chiral urea receptors, a combination previously demonstrated to enable enantiodifferentiation by electrochemical sensing. The calculations correctly predicted the stability order of the enantiomers in acetonitrile solution when the distinction between the enantiomers was above the declared threshold reliability value of 1 kcal mol;1 for computations at this level of theory. Thus, the calculations can not only be applied to predict the likely success of undertakings using the analytical method, it can also, provided ;E is sufficient, potentially be used to determine the absolute configuration of chiral analytes with at least the racemate in hand. The previously successful enantiodifferentiations of various amino acids and alcohols using chiral ion mobility spectroscopy (CIMS) with (S)-2-butanol as the chiral selector were also evaluated by DFT calculations. The calculations again correctly predicted the stability order of the enantiomers when the calculated ;E was above the threshold value though cases not providing a value for ;E above the threshold value was problematic for this system. Attempts to address this shortcoming included an expanded conformational evaluation, a broader analytical approach, and an extended basis set.

A new globally uniform Lagrangian transport scheme for large ensembles of passive tracer particles is presented and applied to wind data from a coupled atmosphere-ocean climate model that includes interactive dynamical feedback with stratospheric chemistry. This feedback from the chemistry is found to enhance large-scale meridional air mass exchange in the northern winter stratosphere as well as intrusion of stratospheric air into the troposphere, where both effects are due to a weakened polar vortex.
Ternutator identities
(2009)
The ternary commutator or ternutator, defined as the alternating sum of the product of three operators, has recently drawn much attention as an interesting structure generalizing the commutator. The ternutator satisfies cubic identities analogous to the quadratic Jacobi identity for the commutator. We present various forms of these identities and discuss the possibility of using them to define ternary algebras.
Using complex interpolation we prove new inclusion and coincidence theorems for multiple (fully) summing multilinear and holomorphic mappings. Among several other results we show that continuous n- linear forms on cotype 2 spaces are multiple (2; q(k),..., q(k))-summing, where 2(k-1) < n <= 2(k), q(0) = 2 and q(k+1) = 2q(k)/1+q(k) for k >= 0.
Virtual 3D city models increasingly cover whole city areas; hence, the perception of complex urban structures becomes increasingly difficult. Using abstract visualization, complexity of these models can be hidden where its visibility is unnecessary, while important features are maintained and highlighted for better comprehension and communication. We present a technique to automatically generalize a given virtual 3D city model consisting of building models, an infrastructure network and optional land coverage data; this technique creates several representations of increasing levels of abstraction. Using the infrastructure network, our technique groups building models and replaces them with cell blocks, while preserving local landmarks. By computing a landmark hierarchy, we reduce the set of initial landmarks in a spatially balanced manner for use in higher levels of abstraction. In four application examples, we demonstrate smooth visualization of transitions between precomputed representations; dynamic landmark highlighting according to virtual camera distance; an implementation of a cognitively enhanced route representation, and generalization lenses to combine precomputed representations in focus + context visualization.
A new pterocarpan (named 8-methoxyneorautenol) was isolated from the acetone ext. of the root bark of Erythrina abyssinica. In addn., the known isoflavonoid derivs. eryvarin L, erycristagallin and shinpterocarpin were identified for the first time from the roots of this plant. The structures were detd. on the basis of spectroscopic evidence. The new compd. showed selective antimicrobial activity against Trichophyton mentagrophytes. The acetone ext. of the root bark of E. abyssinica showed radical scavenging activity towards 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical (DPPH). The pterocarpenes, 3-hydroxy-9-methoxy-10-(3,3-dimethylallyl)pterocarpene and erycristagallin, were the most active constituents of the roots of this plant and showing dose-dependent activities similar to that of the std. quercetin. Mate choice is mediated by a range of sensory cues, and assortative mating based on these cues can drive reproductive isolation among diverging populations. A specific feature of mormyrid fish, the electric organ discharge (EOD), is used for electrolocation and intraspecific communication. We hypothesized that the EOD also facilitates assortative mating and ultimately promotes prezygotic reproductive isolation in African weakly electric fishes. Our behavioural experiments using live males as well as EOD playback demonstrated that female mate recognition is influenced by EOD signals and that females are attracted to EOD characteristics of conspecific males. The dual function of the EOD for both foraging and social communication (including mate recognition leading to assortative mating) underlines the importance of electric signal differentiation for the divergence of African weakly electric fishes. Thus, the EOD provides an intriguing mechanism promoting trophic divergence and reproductive isolation between two closely related Campylomormyrus species occurring in sympatry in the lower Congo rapids.
Interlaminar differences of intrinsic properties of pyramidal neurons in the auditory cortex of mice
(2009)
Cortical information processing depends crucially upon intrinsic neuronal properties modulating a given synaptic input, in addition to integration of excitatory and inhibitory inputs. These intrinsic mechanisms are poorly understood in sensory cortex areas. We therefore investigated neuronal properties in slices of the auditory cortex (AC) of normal hearing mice using whole-cell patch-clamp recordings of pyramidal neurons in layers II/III, IV, V, and VI in the current- and voltage clamp mode. A total of 234 pyramidal neurons were included in the analysis revealing distinct laminar differences. Regular spiking (RS) neurons in layer II/III have significantly lower resting membrane potential, higher threshold for action potential generation, and larger K-ir and I-h amplitudes compared with layer V and VI RS neurons. These currents could improve temporal resolution in the upper layers of the AC. Additionally, the presence of a T-type Ca2+ current could be an important factor of RS neurons in these upper layers to amplify temporally closely correlated inputs. Compared with upper layers, lower layers (V and VI) exhibit a higher relative abundance of intrinsic bursting neurons. These neurons may provide layer-specific transfer functions for interlaminar, intercortical, and corticofugal information processing.

The centrosome is the main microtubule-organizing center and constitutes the largest protein complex in a eukaryotic cell. The Dictyostelium centrosome is an established model for acentriolar centrosomes and it consists of a layered core structure Surrounded by a so-called corona, which harbors microtubule nucleation complexes. We have identified 34 new centrosomal candidate proteins through mass spectrometrical analysis of the proteome of isolated Dictyostelium centrosomes. Here we present a characterization of 12 centrosomal candidate proteins all featuring coiled coil regions and low expression levels, which are the most common attributes of centrosomal proteins. We used GFP fusion proteins to localize the candidate proteins in whole cells and on microtubule-free, isolated centrosomes. Thus we were able to identify nine new genuine centrosomal proteins including a putative orthologue of Cep192, an interaction partner of polo-like kinase 4 in human centriole biogenesis. In this respect, centrosomal localization of the only polo-like kinase in Dictyostelium, Pik, is also shown in this work. Using confocal deconvolution microscopy, four components, CP39, CP55, CP75, and CP91 could be clearly assigned to the so far almost uncharacterized centrosomal core structure, while CP148 and Cep192 localized to a zone between that of corona marker and core proteins. Finally, CP103 and CP248 were constituents of the corona. In contrast, NE81 was localized at the nuclear envelope and three others, an orthologue of the spindle checkpoint component Mad1, the novel Cenp68, and the centrosomal CP248 were observed at the centromeres, which are clustered and linked to the centrosome throughout the entire cell cycle.
