The acquisition of basic arithmetic concepts of children at pre-school and primary-school age (about 4 to 8 years of age) can be described by a cognitive developmental model with 6 levels: (1) count number, (2) mental number line, (3) cardinality and decomposability, (4) class inclusion and embeddedness, (5) relationality, and (6) units in numbers (bundling and unbundling). In this paper, 3 studies for longitudinally testing the model are presented. In Studies 1 (N = 26; heterogeneous age) and 2 (N = 62; homogeneous age) it shows that the individual development of arithmetic concepts across 18 months (Study 1:4 points of measurement) respectively 17 months (Study 2:3 points of measurement before, at, and after entering primary school) follows the levels of the model. In Study 3 (N = 243) it shows that the acquisition of curricular mathematical competencies at the end of Grade 2 is better predicted by conceptual arithmetic understanding at the end of Grade 1 than by intelligence. The results substantiate the validity of the model und confirm the relevance of basic arithmetic concepts for mathematical learning at school with respective consequences for the remedial training of children with math learning difficulties and dyscalculia.
Fearful patients are in emergency situation often inattentive, unable to concentrate, agitated or even aroused. They show reduced perception and restricted willingness to cooperate. In severe conditions these patients are strongly tending towards more hazardous behavior: refusal of necessary therapy, break out or even high suicidal risk. Within disaster situations (mass accidents, fires) fearful patients with their agitated and persuasive behavior can influence other victims and with that trigger a situation of mass panic that has to be avoided at any cost. Therefore these patients must be swiftly identified and separated from the event. A diligent diagnosis process including physical-neurological examination is necessary. The recommended treatment within the emergency situation consists of a close continuous personal contact through assuring and encouraging conversations. A sense of security should be created by explaining the planned therapeutic interventions in simple, easy-to-follow and understandable words. If this necessary psycho-therapeutic intervention can not be applied a short-term psychopharmacological treatment is required preferably with Benzodiazepines. Still a long-term specific therapy is highly advised, since these disturbances, if left untreated, will lead to a chronic manifestation and with that to considerable psychosocial impairments.
What makes computer users spend their free time working with the computer? Are there different types of users and, if so, in what ways do they differ? N = 271 subjects took part in an online survey concerning the incentives for computer use in free time. Selected mailing lists were used to identify highly committed users (A4 3.9 hours of free time a day spent working with computers). The following incentive factors were found for these users: community/ affiliation; sense of competence; flexibility/utility; avoidance of boredom; rebellious tendency to illegality. Depending on their favorite use of the computer, three types of users were found: Purposeful users (58%), hackers (entering other networks without intention to cause damage) (22%), and crackers (entering other networks with intention to cause damage) (20%). There are significant differences in the incentive profiles of these types of users. Hacking and cracking, but not purposeful use, are correlated with flow experience and positive activation. These findings are not representative for all leisure time computer users. They refer to a sample of highly committed users who can be reached in special associations (e.g., relevant student networks, the Chaos Computer Club)
