Diacylglycerol kinase (DGK) regulates the level of the second messenger diacylglycerol and produces phosphatidic acid (PA), another signaling molecule. The Arabidopsis thaliana genome encodes seven putative diacylglycerol kinase isozymes (named AtDGK1 to -7), structurally falling into three major clusters. So far, enzymatic activity has not been reported for any plant Cluster II DGK. Here, we demonstrate that a representative of this cluster, AtDGK7, is biochemically active when expressed as a recombinant protein in Escherichia coli. AtDGK7, encoded by gene locus At4g30340, contains 374 amino acids with an apparent molecular mass of 41.2 kDa. AtDGK7 harbors an N-terminal catalytic domain, but in contrast to various characterized DGKs (including AtDGK2), it lacks a cysteine-rich domain at its N terminus, and, importantly, its C-terminal DGK accessory domain is incomplete. Recombinant AtDGK7 expressed in E. coli exhibits Michaelis-Menten type kinetics with 1,2-dioleoyl-sn-glycerol as substrate. AtDGK7 activity was affected by pH, detergents, and the DGK inhibitor R59022. We demonstrate that both AtDGK2 and AtDGK7 phosphorylate diacylglycerol molecular species that are typically found in plants, indicating that both enzymes convert physiologically relevant substrates. AtDGK7 is expressed throughout the Arabidopsis plant, but expression is strongest in flowers and young seedlings. Expression of AtDGK2 is transiently induced by wounding. R59022 at similar to 80 mu M inhibits root elongation and lateral root formation and reduces plant growth, indicating that DGKs play an important role in plant development
Urotensin II (UII), which acts on the G protein-coupled urotensin ( UT) receptor, elicits long-lasting vasoconstriction. The role of UT receptor internalization and intracellular trafficking in vasoconstriction has yet not been analyzed. Therefore, UII-mediated contractile responses of aortic ring preparations in wire myography and rat UT (rUT) receptor internalization and intracellular trafficking in binding and imaging analyses were compared. UII elicited a concentration-dependent vasoconstriction of rat aorta (-log EC50, mol/L:9.0 +/- 0.1). A second application of UII after 30 minutes elicited a reduced contraction (36 +/- 4% of the initial response), but when applied after 60 minutes elicited a full contraction. In internalization experiments with radioactive labeled VII (I-125-UII), approximate to 70% of rUT receptors expressed on the cell surface of human embryonic kidney 293 cells were sequestered within 30 minutes (half life [t(h)]: 5.6 +/- 0.2 minutes), but recycled quantitatively within 60 minutes (t(h) 31.9 +/- 2.6 minutes). UII- bound rUT receptors were sorted to early and recycling endosomes, as evidenced by colocalization of rUT receptors with the early endosomal antigen and the transferrin receptor. Real-time imaging with a newly developed fluorescent UII (Cy3- UII) revealed that rUT receptors recruited arrestin3 green fluorescent protein to the plasma membrane. Arrestin3 was not required for the endocytosis of the rUT receptor, however, as internalization of Cy3-UII was not altered in mouse embryonic fibroblasts lacking endogenous arrestin2/arrestin3 expression. The data demonstrate that the rUT receptor internalizes arrestin independently and recycles quantitatively. The continuous externalization of rUT receptors provides the basis for repetitive and lasting UII-mediated vasoconstriction

Phosphatidylinositol signaling pathway and the relevant metabolites are known to be critical to the modulation of different aspects of plant growth, development, and stress responses. Inositol polyphosphate 5-phosphatase is a key enzyme involved in phosphatidylinositol metabolism and is encoded by an At5PTase gene family in Arabidopsis thaliana. A previous study shows that At5PTase11 mediates cotyledon vascular development probably through the regulation of intracellular calcium levels. In this study, we provide evidence that At5PTase13 modulates the development of cotyledon veins through its regulation of auxin homeostasis. A T-DNA insertional knockout mutant, At5pt13-1, showed a defect in development of the cotyledon vein, which was rescued completely by exogenous auxin and in part by brassinolide, a steroid hormone. Furthermore, the mutant had reduced auxin content and altered auxin accumulation in seedlings revealed by the DR5:beta-glucuronidase fusion construct in seedlings. In addition, microarray analysis shows that the transcription of key genes responsible for auxin biosynthesis and transport was altered in At5pt13-1. The At5pt13-1 mutant was also less sensitive to auxin inhibition of root elongation. These results suggest that At5PTase13 regulates the homeostasis of auxin, a key hormone controlling vascular development in plants

We present an automatic control method for phase locking of regular and chaotic non-identical oscillations, when all subsystems interact via feedback. This method is based on the well known principle of feedback control which takes place in nature and is successfully used in engineering. In contrast to unidirectional and bidirectional coupling, the approach presented here supposes the existence of a special controller, which allows to change the parameters of the controlled systems. First we discuss general principles of automatic phase synchronization (PS) for arbitrary coupled systems with a controller whose input is given by a special quadratic form of coordinates of the individual systems and its output is a result of the application of a linear differential operator. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach for controlled PS on several examples: (i) two coupled regular oscillators, (ii) coupled regular and chaotic oscillators, (iii) two coupled chaotic R"ossler oscillators, (iv) two coupled foodweb models, (v) coupled chaotic R"ossler and Lorenz oscillators, (vi) ensembles of locally coupled regular oscillators, (vii) ensembles of locally coupled chaotic oscillators, and (viii) ensembles of globally coupled chaotic oscillators.

Binding and inhibition in working memory : individual and age differences in short-term recognition
(2005)
Two studies investigated the relationship between working memory capacity (WMC), adult age, and the resolution of conflict between familiarity and recollection in short-term recognition tasks. Experiment 1 showed a specific deficit of young adults with low WMC in rejecting intrusion probes (i.e., highly familiar probes) in a modified Sternberg task, which was similar to the deficit found in old adults in a parallel experiment (K. Oberauer, 2001). Experiment 2 generalized these results to 3 recognition paradigms (modified Sternberg, local recognition, and n back tasks). Old adults showed disproportional performance deficits on intrusion probes only in terms of reaction times, whereas young adults with low WMC showed them only in terms of errors. The generality of the effect across paradigms is more compatible with a deficit in content-context bindings subserving recollection than with a deficit in inhibition of irrelevant information in working memory. Structural equation models showed that WMC is related to the efficiency of recollection but not of familiarity. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2005 APA, all rights reserved)
In the context of this study, the noncovalent binding of selected phenolic compounds (chlorogenic, ferulic, and gallic acids, quercetin, rutin, and isocluercetin) to different proteins (human serum albumin, bovine serum albumin, soy glycinin, and lysozyme) was studied with direct (Hummel- Dreyer/size exclusion chromatography) and/or indirect methods (fluorescence absorbance properties of the binding components). In the latter case, the measurement of the phenol binding was achieved by exploiting the intrinsic fluorescence emission properties of cluercetin as a probe. From the data obtained, the binding constants and the number of binding sites were calculated. The binding parameters were influenced by different factors, where, e.g., increasing temperature and ionic strength as well as decreasing pH cause a diminished binding. The structures of the proteins as determined by circular dichroism indicate changes in the tertiary structure with the secondary structure remaining intact
We investigate the motion of a hard cylinder rolling down a soft, inclined plane. The cylinder is subjected to a viscous drag force and stochastic fluctuations due to the surrounding rnedium. In a wide range of parameters we observe bistability of the rolling velocity. In dependence on the parameters, increasing noise level may lead to increasing or decreasing average velocity of the cylinder. The approximative analytical theory agrees with numerical results

We show relative index formulas for boundary value problems in cylindrical domains and Sobolev spaces with different weights at too. The amplitude functions are meromorphic in the axial covariable and take values in the space of boundary value problems on the cross section of the cylinder. Copyright (c) 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd
We define a class of boundary value problems on manifolds with fibered boundary. This class is in a certain sense a deformation between the classical boundary value problems and the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer problems in subspaces (it contains both as special cases). The boundary conditions in this theory are taken as elements of the C*-algebra generated by pseudodifferential operators and families of pseudodifferential operators in the fibers. We prove the Fredholm. property for elliptic boundary value problems and compute a topological obstruction (similar to Atiyah-Bott obstruction) to the existence of elliptic boundary conditions for a given elliptic operator. Geometric operators with trivial and nontrivial obstruction are given. (c) 2005 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim
We study boundary-contact problems for elliptic equations (and systems) with interfaces that have conical singularities. Such problems represent continuous operators between weighted Sobolev spaces and subspaces with asymptotics. Ellipticity is formulated in terms of extra transmission conditions along the interfaces with a control of the conormal symbolic structure near conical singularities. We show regularity and asymptotics of solutions in weighted spaces, and we construct parametrices. The result will be illustrated by a number of explicit examples. (c) 2004 Elsevier Inc. Brassinosteroids (BRs) are highly potent growth-promoting sterol derivatives. BR-deficient or BR-insensitive mutants display dwarfism. Whole plants and excised tissues have been used to analyse the mechanisms involved in BR- promoted growth. BR stimulates cell elongation and cell division, and BR has specific effects on differentiation. Underlying physiological pathways include modification of cell wall properties, effects on carbohydrate assimilation and allocation, and control of aquaporin activities. BR apparently coordinates and integrates diverse processes required for growth, partly via interactions with other phytohormones setting the frame for BR responses. Ultimately, BR-promoted growth is mediated through genomic pathways. Positive regulators of the BR response (such as BZR1 and BES1) and putative downstream components (such as EXO) are involved in the regulation of BR-responsive genes and growth promotion. BR- responsive genes have been identified in several plant species. However, causal links between physiological effects and changes of transcript patterns, for the most part, are still unresolved. This review focuses on physiology and molecular mechanisms underlying BR-promoted growth in the different plant organs. Interactions with other phytohormones are discussed
The formation of a Langmuir monolayer of an amphiphilic derivative of zinc phthalocyanine (Na[(ZnPcSO3)-S-t]) has been studied by means of surface potential technique and Brewster angle microscopy. The experiments were undertaken in order to understand the behaviour of this monolayer with a well-defined surface pressure isotherm. The floating film is described as a truly monomolecular layer formed by very rigid islands in which the phthalocyanine units tend to take on a preferential orientation with their planes perpendicular to the air-water interface, for high values of the surface pressure. Complex dynamical systems with many degrees of freedom may exhibit a wealth of collective phenomena related to high-dimensional chaos. This paper focuses on a lattice of coupled logistic maps to investigate the relationship between the loss of chaos synchronization and the onset of shadowing breakdown via unstable dimension variability in complex systems. In the neighborhood of the critical transition to strongly non-hyperbolic behavior, the system undergoes on-off intermittency with respect to the synchronization manifold. This has been confirmed by numerical diagnostics of synchronization and non-hyperbolic behavior, the latter using the statistical properties of finite-time Lyapunov exponents. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. Interaction of particles of dust with vortex convective flows is under theoretical consideration. It is assumed that the volume fraction of solid phase is small, variations of density due to nonuniform distribution of particles and those caused by temperature nonisothermality of medium are comparable. Equations for the description of thermal buoyancy convection of a dusty medium are developed in the framework of the generalized Boussinesq approximation taking into account finite velocity of particle sedimentation. The capture of a cloud of dust particles by a vortex convective flow is considered, general criterion for the formation of such a cloud is obtained. The peculiarities of a steady state in the form of a dust cloud and backward influence of the solid phase on the carrier flow are studied in detail for a vertical layer heated from the sidewalls. It is shown that in the case, when this backward influence is essential, a hysteresis behavior is possible. The stability analysis of the steady state is performed. It turns out that there is a narrow range of governing parameters, in which such a steady state is stable. (c) 2005 American Institute of Physics
Carbon acquisition mechanisms by planktonic desmids and their link to ecological distribution
(2005)
To test if different inorganic carbon (C-i) uptake mechanisms underlie the ecological distribution pattern of planktonic desmids, we performed pH-drift experiments with 12 strains, belonging to seven species, originating from lakes of different pH. Staurastrum brachiatum Ralfs and Staurodesmus cuspidatus (Ralfs) Teil. var. curvatus (W. West) Teil., species confined to acidic, soft water habitats, showed remarkably different behavior in the pH drift experiments: S. brachiatum appeared to use CO2 only, whereas Staurodesmus cuspidatus appeared to use HCO3- as well. Staurastrum chaetoceras (Schr.) Smith and Staurastrum planctonicum Teil, species well-known for their abundant occurrence in alkaline waters, were the most effective at using HCO3-. Other species, to be encountered in both slightly acidic and slightly alkaline waters, took an intermediate position. Experiments using specific inhibitors suggested that Cosmarium abbreviatum Rac. var. planctonicum W. & G.S. West and S. brachiatum use CO2 by an active CO2 uptake mechanism, whereas S. chaetoceras and Staurodesmus cuspidatus showed an active HCO3- uptake pattern. Most likely, these active uptake mechanisms make use of H+-ATPase, as none of the desmids expressed significant carbonic anhydrase activity. A series of strains of Staurastrum planctonicum isolated from different habitats, all clustered in between the species using HCO3-, but no further differentiation was observed. Therefore, desmids cannot be simply characterized as exclusive CO2 users, and the ecological distribution pattern of a desmid species does not unequivocally link to a certain C-i uptake mechanism. Nevertheless, there does appear to be a general ecological link between a species' C-i uptake mechanism and its ecological distribution
We investigate the transient recombination and transfer properties of nonequilibrium carriers in an In0.16Ga0.84As/GaAs quantum well (QW) with an additional lateral confinement implemented by a patterned stressor layer. The structure thus contains QW- and quantum-wire-like areas. At low excitation densities, photoluminescence (PL) transients from both areas are well described by a rate equation model for a three-level system with a saturable interlevel carrier transfer representing the lateral drift of carriers from the QW regions into the wires. Small-signal carrier lifetimes for QW, wires, and transfer time from QW to wire are 180, 190, and 28 ps, respectively. For high excitation densities the time constants of the observed transients increase, in agreement with the model. In addition, QW and wire PL lines merge indicating a smoothening of the potential difference, i.e., the effective carrier confinement caused by the stressor structure becomes weaker with increasing excitation. We establish strict upper limits for the Casimir interaction between multilayered structures of arbitrary dielectric or diamagnetic materials. We discuss the appearance of different power laws due to frequency-dependent material constants. Simple analytical expressions are in good agreement with numerical calculations based on Lifshitz theory. We discuss the improvements required for current ( meta) materials to achieve a repulsive Casimir force
We present an integrated model for the understanding of and the reasoning from conditional statements. Central assumptions from several approaches are integrated into a causal path model. According to the model, the cognitive availability of exceptions to a conditional reduces the subjective conditional probability of the consequent, given the antecedent. This conditional probability determines people's degree of belief in the conditional, which in turn affects their willingness to accept logically valid inferences. In addition to this indirect pathway, the model contains a direct pathway: Availability of exceptional situations directly reduces the endorsement of valid inferences. We tested the integrated model with three experiments using conditional statements embedded in pseudonaturalistic cover stories. An explicitly mentioned causal link between antecedent and consequent was either present (causal conditionals) or absent (arbitrary conditionals). The model was supported for the causal but not for the arbitrary conditional statements
Using standard cell biological and biochemical methods we were able to test the ability of a degradable, thermoplastic block copolymer to support the adhesion, proliferation, and the cellular activity of primary cell cultures of the oral cavity in vitro. The delicate balance between a group of endogenous enzymes, Matrix Metalloproteinases (MMPs), and their inhibitors (Tissue Inhibitor of MMPs, TIMPs) have a decisive function in the remodeling of the extracellular matrix during processes like wound healing or the integration of biomaterials in surrounding tissues after implantation. Recently developed, biodegradable thermoplastic elastomers with shape-memory properties may be the key to develop new therapeutical options in head and neck surgery. Primary cell cultures of the oral cavity of Sprague-Dawley rats were seeded on the surface of a thermoplastic block copolymer and on a polystyrene surface as control. Conditioned media of the primary cells were analyzed for MMPs and TIMPs after different periods of cell growth. The MMP and TIMP expression was analysed by zymography and a radiometric enzyme assay. No statistically significant differences in the appearance and the kinetic of MMP-1, MMP-2, MMP-9 and TIMPs were detected between cells grown on the polymer surface compared to the control. An appropriate understanding of the molecular processes that regulate cellular growth and integration of a biomaterial in surrounding tissue is the requirement for an optimal adaptation of biodegradable, polymeric biomaterials to the physiological, anatomical, and surgical conditions in vivo to develop new therapeutic options in otolaryngology and head and neck surgery
Upon stimulation of cells with interleukin-1 (IL-1) the IL-1 receptor type 1 (IL-1RI) associated kinase-1 (IRAK- 1) transiently associates to and dissociates front the IL-IRI and thereafter translocates into the nucleus. Here we show that nuclear translocation of IRAK-I depends on its kinase activity since translocation was not observed in EL-4 cells overexpressing a kinase negative IRAK-1 mutant (EL-4(IRAK-1-K239S)). IRAK-1 itself, an endogenous substrate with an apparent molecular weight of 24 kDa (p24). and exogenous substrates like histone and myelin basic protein are phosphorylated by nuclear located IRAK-1. Phosphorylation of p24 cannot be detected in EL-4(IRAK-1-K239S) cells. IL-1- dependent recruitment of IRAK-1 to the IL-1RI and subsequent phosphorylation of IRAK-l is a prerequisite for nuclear translocation of IRAK-1. It is therefore concluded that intracellular localization of IRAK-1 depends on its kinase activity and that IRAK-1 may also function as a kinase in the nucleus as shown by a new putative endogenous substrate. Chaotic channel
(2005)
This work combines the theory of chaotic synchronization with the theory of information in order to introduce the chaotic channel, an active medium formed by connected chaotic systems. This subset of a large chaotic net represents the path along which information flows. We show that the possible amount of information exchange between the transmitter, where information enters the net, and the receiver, the destination of the information, is proportional to the level of synchronization between these two special subsystems
The intention of this study was to increase the knowledge on the composition and structure of coffee bean proteins and the changes induced in them especially with regard to their interactions with the phenolic compounds also present. For this purpose green coffee beans were extracted by means of standard methanol extraction to quantify the chlorogenic acid content. Different solubilisation buffers were applied to extract the protein fractions with or without prior fat removal. The protein samples thus obtained were analysed by different methods (RP-HPLC, SDS-PAGE and SELDI-TOF- MS). Preliminary model studies were performed to characterize the interactions between the isolated green coffee protein fractions and chlorogenic acid (the major phenolic compound in coffee beans) with the intention of fulfilling the ultimate goal of characterizing such reactions in roasted coffee. The results show that the content of chlorogenic bound covalently to the protein increases. A reaction with the nucleophilic protein side chains (tryptophan, cystein and lysine) was recorded. Cross-inked protein polymers were also detected, whereby the a-chain was found to be more reactive. These reactions effect the solubility of the coffee bean proteins, the latter in turn becoming more acidic in nature. The secondary structure was affected only slightly as determined by circular dichroism. The in-vitro tryptic digestibility was also influenced, where again the cc-chain seems to be more susceptible. The observed polymerisation due to derivatisation by chorogenic acid declines the digestion. Similar digestion behaviour was also observed during tryptic hydrolysis of roasted coffee compared to that of green coffee, roasting allowing more stronger denaturation caused by the accompanying Maillard reaction. The derivatised green coffee bean proteins were found to have moderate antioxidative capacity
In this paper, we propose a method of surface waves characterization based on the deformation of the wavelet transform of the analysed signal. An estimate of the phase velocity (the group velocity) and the attenuation coefficient is carried out using a model-based approach to determine the propagation operator in the wavelet domain, which depends nonlinearly on a set of unknown parameters. These parameters explicitly define the phase velocity, the group velocity and the attenuation. Under the assumption that the difference between waveforms observed at a couple of stations is solely due to the dispersion characteristics and the intrinsic attenuation of the medium, we then seek to find the set of unknown parameters of this model. Finding the model parameters turns out to be that of an optimization problem, which is solved through the minimization of an appropriately defined cost function. We show that, unlike time-frequency methods that exploit only the square modulus of the transform, we can achieve a complete characterization of surface waves in a dispersive and attenuating medium. Using both synthetic examples and experimental data, we also show that it is in principle possible to separate different modes in both the time domain and the frequency domain
Fluorocarbon associative polymers of the polysoap type were studied using two fluorescent probes, 1- octanoylpyrene (OcPyH) and 1-perfluorooctanoylpyrene (OcPyF). In aqueous solution the polymers formed hydrophobic domains composed of hydrocarbon, fluorocarbon or both types of polymeric side chains, which could solubilize the probes. This resulted in the appearance of new fluorescence emission bands and changes in the fluorescence polarization of the probes. The differences in the solubilization properties of the polymers are discussed. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved
Seismic tomography, imaging of seismic scatterers, and magnetotelluric soundings reveal a sharp lithologic contrast along a similar to 10 km long segment of the Arava Fault (AF), a prominent fault of the southern Dead Sea Transform (DST) in the Middle East. Low seismic velocities and resistivities occur on its western side and higher values east of it, and the boundary between the two units coincides partly with a seismic scattering image. At 1 - 4 km depth the boundary is offset to the east of the AF surface trace, suggesting that at least two fault strands exist, and that slip occurred on multiple strands throughout the margin's history. A westward fault jump, possibly associated with straightening of a fault bend, explains both our observations and the narrow fault zone observed by others

During processing and storage, phenolic compounds (PCs) may react with food protein bound amino acids (AAs). Such reactions have been reported to change physicochemical and to decrease in vitro digestion properties of proteins. A rat growth and nitrogen (N) balance study was conducted to prove whether derivatization with chlorogenic acid (CA) affects the nutritional quality of beta-lactoglobulin (beta-LG). Test diets (10% protein level) contained nonderivatized beta-LG (LG, treated under omission of CA), low derivatization level beta-LG (LGL), high derivatization level beta-LG (LGH), or casein supplemented with L-methionine (0.3% of diet; C+met) as an internal standard. An additional group received untreated beta-LG supplemented with pure CA (1.03% of diet; LG+CA). The AA composition of test proteins, plasma AAs, and liver glutathione (GSH) concentrations were determined. Protein digestibility-corrected amino acid score (PDCAAS) was calculated using human or rat AA requirement patterns and rat fecal digestibility values. N excretion was significantly higher in feces and lower in urine of rats fed with LGH as compared to LG and LGL. Consequently, true N digestibility (TND) was significantly lower with LGH as compared to LG and LGL. The lower content of methionine, cysteine, lysine, and tryptophan in LGH corresponded to a reduced TND. Net protein utilization (NPU) was not different between treated beta-LG fed diet groups but was lower than in LG+CA and C+met fed groups. Only at a relatively high level of derivatization with CA, the otherwise good nutritional quality of beta-LG is affected so that TND is reduced, while NPU still remains unaffected. Derivatization of beta-LG with CA does not seem to lead to an additional deficiency in a specific indispensable AA in growing rats fed with 10% protein

We consider the additivity of the minimal output entropy and the classical information capacity of a class of quantum channels. For this class of channels, the norm of the output is maximized for the output being a normalized projection. We prove the additivity of the minimal output Renyi entropies with entropic parameters alpha is an element of [ 0, 2], generalizing an argument by Alicki and Fannes, and present a number of examples in detail. In order to relate these results to the classical information capacity, we introduce a weak form of covariance of a channel. We then identify various instances of weakly covariant channels for which we can infer the additivity of the classical information capacity. Both additivity results apply to the case of an arbitrary number of different channels. Finally, we relate the obtained results to instances of bi-partite quantum states for which the entanglement cost can be calculated
In this article we report about a successful application of modern machine learning technology, namely Support Vector Machines, to the problem of assessing the 'drug-likeness' of a chemical from a given set of descriptors of the Substance. We were able to drastically improve the recent result by Byvatov et al. (2003) on this task and achieved an error rate of about 7% on unseen compounds using Support Vector Machines. We see a very high potential of such machine learning techniques for a variety of computational chemistry problems that occur in the drug discovery and drug design process
The rise and fall of the Classic Maya provides a textbook example of human social evolution. It is therefore significant to discover that the history of theMaya was so closely tied to environmental constraints. If Maya civilization could collapse under the weight of natural climate events, it is of more than academic interest to ponder how modem society will fare in the face of an uncertain climate in the years ahead. An understanding of how ancient cultures responded to climatic changes in the past may thus provide important lessons for humanity in the future
The up to similar to4 km high southern Patagonian Andes form a pronounced topographic barrier to atmospheric circulation in the southern hemisphere westerlies, and cause one of the most drastic orographic rain shadows on earth. Geologic data imply that this climatic pattern has been established or significantly enhanced during Miocene surface uplift of this Andean segment. We report evidence for important climatic and ecologic changes in the eastern foreland of the Patagonian Andes that appear to be the result of this uplift. To provide constraints on Miocene plant ecosystems and precipitation in the eastern (leeward) foreland of the Patagonian Andes, we determined carbon and oxygen isotope values of pedogenic carbonate nodules from a similar to500 m thick section of the continental Santa Cruz Formation. The age of these deposits was constrained by Ar/Ar dating of intercalated tuffs, which range from similar to22 to 14 Ma. At similar to16.5 Ma, the delta(13)C values increase by similar to3parts per thousand, the delta(18)O values decrease by >2parts per thousand, and the scatter in the oxygen isotope data increases significantly. We interpret these changes as the consequence of >1 km surface uplift in this Andean segment (from the delta(18)O values), and increased aridity to its east (from the delta(13)C values and the increased scatter in the delta(18)O values). Sediments overlying the Santa Cruz Formation are very limited in extent and volume, and dominated by coarse conglomerates related to Pleistocene and older glaciations. It thus seems that, by similar to14 Ma, deposition in the eastern foreland of the Southern Patagonian Andes had essentially ceased as the result of rain shadow formation. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V.
