We establish elements of a new approch to ellipticity and parametrices within operator algebras on a manifold with higher singularities, only based on some general axiomatic requirements on parameter-dependent operators in suitable scales of spaces. The idea is to model an iterative process with new generations of parameter-dependent operator theories, together with new scales of spaces that satisfy analogous requirements as the original ones, now on a corresponding higher level. The “full” calculus is voluminous; so we content ourselves here with some typical aspects such as symbols in terms of order reducing families, classes of relevant examples, and operators near the conical exit to infinity.
Parabolic equations on manifolds with singularities require a new calculus of anisotropic pseudo-differential operators with operator-valued symbols. The paper develops this theory along the lines of sn abstract wedge calculus with strongly continuous groups of isomorphisms on the involved Banach spaces. The corresponding pseodo-diferential operators are continuous in anisotropic wedge Sobolev spaces, and they form an alegbra. There is then introduced the concept of anisotropic parameter-dependent ellipticity, based on an order reduction variant of the pseudo-differential calculus. The theory is appled to a class of parabolic differential operators, and it is proved the invertibility in Sobolev spaces with exponential weights at infinity in time direction.
We study (pseudo-)differential operators on a manifold with edge Z, locally modelled on a wedge with model cone that has itself a base manifold W with smooth edge Y . The typical operators A are corner degenerate in a specific way. They are described (modulo ‘lower order terms’) by a principal symbolic hierarchy σ(A) = (σ ψ(A), σ ^(A), σ ^(A)), where σ ψ is the interior symbol and σ ^(A)(y, η), (y, η) 2 T*Y \ 0, the (operator-valued) edge symbol of ‘first generation’, cf. [15]. The novelty here is the edge symbol σ^ of ‘second generation’, parametrised by (z, Ϛ) 2 T*Z \ 0, acting on weighted Sobolev spaces on the infinite cone with base W. Since such a cone has edges with exit to infinity, the calculus has the problem to understand the behaviour of operators on a manifold of that kind. We show the continuity of corner-degenerate operators in weighted edge Sobolev spaces, and we investigate the ellipticity of edge symbols of second generation. Starting from parameter-dependent elliptic families of edge operators of first generation, we obtain the Fredholm property of higher edge symbols on the corresponding singular infinite model cone.
Operators on a manifold with (geometric) singularities are degenerate in a natural way. They have a principal symbolic structure with contributions from the different strata of the configuration. We study the calculus of such operators on the level of edge symbols of second generation, based on specific quantizations of the corner-degenerate interior symbols, and show that this structure is preserved under compositions.
We study mixed boundary value problems, here mainly of Zaremba type for the Laplacian within an edge algebra of boundary value problems. The edge here is the interface of the jump from the Dirichlet to the Neumann condition. In contrast to earlier descriptions of mixed problems within such an edge calculus, cf. (Harutjunjan and Schulze, Elliptic mixed, transmission and singular crack problems, 2008), we focus on new Mellin edge quantisations of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator on the Neumann side of the boundary and employ a pseudo-differential calculus of corresponding boundary value problems without the transmission property at the interface. This allows us to construct parametrices for the original mixed problem in a new and transparent way.
We study the Volterra property of a class of anisotropic pseudo-differential operators on R x B for a manifold B with edge Y and time-variable t. This exposition belongs to a program for studying parabolicity in such a situation. In the present consideration we establish non-smoothing elements in a subalgebra with anisotropic operator-valued symbols of Mellin type with holomorphic symbols in the complex Mellin covariable from the cone theory, where the covariable t of t extends to symbolswith respect to t to the lower complex v half-plane. The resulting space ofVolterra operators enlarges an approach of Buchholz (Parabolische Pseudodifferentialoperatoren mit operatorwertigen Symbolen. Ph. D. thesis, Universitat Potsdam, 1996) by necessary elements to a new operator algebra containing Volterra parametrices under an appropriate condition of anisotropic ellipticity. Our approach avoids some difficulty in choosing Volterra quantizations in the edge case by generalizing specific achievements from the isotropic edge-calculus, obtained by Seiler (Pseudodifferential calculus on manifolds with non-compact edges, Ph. D. thesis, University of Potsdam, 1997), see also Gil et al. (in: Demuth et al (eds) Mathematical research, vol 100. Akademic Verlag, Berlin, pp 113-137, 1997; Osaka J Math 37: 221-260, 2000).
Boundary value problems on a manifold with smooth boundary are closely related to the edge calculus where the boundary plays the role of an edge. The problem of expressing parametrices of Shapiro-Lopatinskij elliptic boundary value problems for differential operators gives rise to pseudo-differential operators with the transmission property at the boundary. However, there are interesting pseudo-differential operators without the transmission property, for instance, the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator. In this case the symbols become edge-degenerate under a suitable quantisation, cf. Chang et al. (J Pseudo-Differ Oper Appl 5(2014):69-155, 2014). If the boundary itself has singularities, e.g., conical points or edges, then the symbols are corner-degenerate. In the present paper we study elements of the corresponding corner pseudo-differential calculus.
We study corner-degenerate pseudo-differential operators of any singularity order and develop ellipticity based on the principal symbolic hierarchy, associated with the stratification of the underlying space. We construct parametrices within the calculus and discuss the aspect of additional trace and potential conditions along lower-dimensional strata.
Manifolds with corners in the present investigation are non-smooth configurations - specific stratified spaces - with an incomplete metric such as cones, manifolds with edges, or corners of piecewise smooth domains in Euclidean space. We focus here on operators on such "corner manifolds" of singularity order <= 2, acting in weighted corner Sobolev spaces. The corresponding corner degenerate pseudo-differential operators are formulated via Mellin quantizations, and they also make sense on infinite singular cones.
Elliptic equations on configurations W = W-1 boolean OR (. . .) boolean OR W-N with edge Y and components W-j of different dimension can be treated in the frame of pseudo-differential analysis on manifolds with geometric singularities, here edges. Starting from edge-degenerate operators on Wj, j = 1, . . . , N, we construct an algebra with extra 'transmission' conditions on Y that satisfy an analogue of the Shapiro-Lopatinskij condition. Ellipticity refers to a two-component symbolic hierarchy with an interior and an edge part; the latter one is operator- valued, operating on the union of different dimensional model cones. We construct parametrices within our calculus, where exchange of information between the various components is encoded in Green and Mellin operators that are smoothing on WY. Moreover, we obtain regularity of solutions in weighted edge spaces with asymptotics

Mixed elliptic boundary value problems are characterised by conditions which have a jump along an interface of codimension 1 on the boundary. We study such problems in weighted edge Sobolev spaces and show the Fredholm property and the existence of parametrices under additional conditions of trace and potential type on the interface. Our methods from the calculus of boundary value problems on a manifold with edges will be illustrated by the Zaremba problem and other mixed problems for the Laplace operator.
The ellipticity of operators on a manifold with edge is defined as the bijectivity of the components of a principal symbolic hierarchy σ = (σψ, σ∧), where the second component takes value in operators on the infinite model cone of the local wedges. In general understanding of edge problems there are two basic aspects: Quantisation of edge-degenerate operators in weighted Sobolev spaces, and verifying the elliptcity of the principal edge symbol σ∧ which includes the (in general not explicitly known) number of additional conditions on the edge of trace and potential type. We focus here on these queations and give explicit answers for a wide class of elliptic operators that are connected with the ellipticity of edge boundary value problems and reductions to the boundary. In particular, we study the edge quantisation and ellipticity for Dirichlet-Neumann operators with respect to interfaces of some codimension on a boundary. We show analogues of the Agranovich-Dynin formula for edge boundary value problems, and we establish relations of elliptic operators for different weights, via the spectral flow of the underlying conormal symbols.
The ellipticity of operators on a manifold with edge is defined as the bijectivity of the components of a principal symbolic hierarchy sigma = (sigma(psi), sigma(boolean AND)), where the second component takes values in operators on the infinite model cone of the local wedges. In the general understanding of edge problems there are two basic aspects: Quantisation of edge-degenerate operators in weighted Sobolev spaces, and verifying the ellipticity of the principal edge symbol sigma(boolean AND) which includes the (in general not explicity known) number of additional conditions of trace and potential type on the edge. We focus here on these questions and give explicit answers for a wide class of elliptic operators that are connected with the ellipticity of edge boundary value problems and reductions to the boundary. In particular, we study the edge quantisation and ellipticity for Dirichlet-Neumann operators with respect to interfaces of some codimension on a boundary. We show analogues of the Agranovich-Dynin formula for edge boundary value problems.
We construct a class of elliptic operators in the edge algebra on a manifold M with an embedded submanifold Y interpreted as an edge. The ellipticity refers to a principal symbolic structure consisting of the standard interior symbol and an operator-valued edge symbol. Given a differential operator A on M for every (sufficiently large) s we construct an associated operator A(s) in the edge calculus. We show that ellipticity of A in the usual sense entails ellipticity of A(s) as an edge operator (up to a discrete set of reals s). Parametrices P of A then correspond to parametrices P-s of A(s) interpreted as Mellin-edge representations of P. Copyright (c) 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd

Parametrices P of A then correspond to parametrices Ps of As, interpreted as Mellin-edge representations of P.
For general elliptic pseudodifferential operators on manifolds with singular points, we prove an algebraic index formula. In this formula the symbolic contributions from the interior and from the singular points are explicitly singled out. For two-dimensional manifolds, the interior contribution is reduced to the Atiyah-Singer integral over the cosphere bundle while two additional terms arise. The first of the two is one half of the 'eta' invariant associated to the conormal symbol of the operator at singular points. The second term is also completely determined by the conormal symbol. The example of the Cauchy-Riemann operator on the complex plane shows that all the three terms may be non-zero.
In the preceding paper we proved an explicit index formula for elliptic pseudodifferential operators on a two-dimensional manifold with conical points. Apart from the Atiyah-Singer integral, it contains two additional terms, one of the two being the 'eta' invariant defined by the conormal symbol. In this paper we clarify the meaning of the additional terms for differential operators.
The index formula for elliptic pseudodifferential operators on a two-dimensional manifold with conical points contains the Atiyah-Singer integral as well as two additional terms. One of the two is the 'eta' invariant defined by the conormal symbol, and the other term is explicitly expressed via the principal and subprincipal symbols of the operator at conical points. In the preceding paper we clarified the meaning of the additional terms for first-order differential operators. The aim of this paper is an explicit description of the contribution of a conical point for higher-order differential operators. We show that changing the origin in the complex plane reduces the entire contribution of the conical point to the shifted 'eta' invariant. In turn this latter is expressed in terms of the monodromy matrix for an ordinary differential equation defined by the conormal symbol.
We introduce a natural symmetry condition for a pseudodifferential operator on a manifold with cylindrical ends ensuring that the operator admits a doubling across the boundary. For such operators we prove an explicit index formula containing, apart from the Atiyah-Singer integral, a finite number of residues of the logarithmic derivative of the conormal symbol.
We study operators on singular manifolds, here of conical or edge type, and develop a new general approach of representing asymptotics of solutions to elliptic equations close to the singularities. We introduce asymptotic parametrices, using tools from cone and edge pseudo-differential algebras. Our structures are motivated by models of many-particle physics with singular Coulomb potentials that contribute higher order singularities in Euclidean space, determined by the number of particles.
In paper (Flad and Harutyunyan in Discrete Contin Dyn Syst 420-429, 2011) is shown that the Hamiltonian of the helium atom in the Born-Oppenheimer approximation, in the case if two particles coincide, is an edge-degenerate operator, which is elliptic in the corresponding edge calculus. The aim of this paper is an analogous investigation in the case if all three particles coincide. More precisely, we show that the Hamiltonian in the mentioned case is a corner-degenerate operator, which is elliptic as an operator in the corner analysis.
We extend our approach of asymptotic parametrix construction for Hamiltonian operators from conical to edge-type singularities which is applicable to coalescence points of two particles of the helium atom and related two electron systems including the hydrogen molecule. Up to second-order, we have calculated the symbols of an asymptotic parametrix of the nonrelativistic Hamiltonian of the helium atom within the Born-Oppenheimer approximation and provide explicit formulas for the corresponding Green operators which encode the asymptotic behavior of the eigenfunctions near an edge.
We study a new approach to determine the asymptotic behaviour of quantum many-particle systems near coalescence points of particles which interact via singular Coulomb potentials. This problem is of fundamental interest in electronic structure theory in order to establish accurate and efficient models for numerical simulations. Within our approach, coalescence points of particles are treated as embedded geometric singularities in the configuration space of electrons. Based on a general singular pseudo-differential calculus, we provide a recursive scheme for the calculation of the parametrix and corresponding Green operator of a nonrelativistic Hamiltonian. In our singular calculus, the Green operator encodes all the asymptotic information of the eigenfunctions. Explicit calculations and an asymptotic representation for the Green operator of the hydrogen atom and isoelectronic ions are presented.
The primary motivation for systematic bases in first principles electronic structure simulations is to derive physical and chemical properties of molecules and solids with predetermined accuracy. This requires a detailed understanding of the asymptotic behaviour of many-particle Coulomb systems near coalescence points of particles. Singular analysis provides a convenient framework to study the asymptotic behaviour of wavefunctions near these singularities. In the present work, we want to introduce the mathematical framework of singular analysis and discuss a novel asymptotic parametrix construction for Hamiltonians of many-particle Coulomb systems. This corresponds to the construction of an approximate inverse of a Hamiltonian operator with remainder given by a so-called Green operator. The Green operator encodes essential asymptotic information and we present as our main result an explicit asymptotic formula for this operator. First applications to many-particle models in quantum chemistry are presented in order to demonstrate the feasibility of our approach. The focus is on the asymptotic behaviour of ladder diagrams, which provide the dominant contribution to shortrange correlation in coupled cluster theory. Furthermore, we discuss possible consequences of our asymptotic analysis with respect to adaptive wavelet approximation.

We study the asymptotic regularity of solutions of Hartree-Fock equations for Coulomb systems. In order to deal with singular Coulomb potentials, Fock operators are discussed within the calculus of pseudo-differential operators on conical manifolds. First, the non-self-consistent-field case is considered which means that the functions that enter into the nonlinear terms are not the eigenfunctions of the Fock operator itself. We introduce asymptotic regularity conditions on the functions that build up the Fock operator which guarantee ellipticity for the local part of the Fock operator on the open stretched cone R+ × S². This proves existence of a parametrix with a corresponding smoothing remainder from which it follows, via a bootstrap argument, that the eigenfunctions of the Fock operator again satisfy asymptotic regularity conditions. Using a fixed-point approach based on Cances and Le Bris analysis of the level-shifting algorithm, we show via another bootstrap argument, that the corresponding self-consistent-field solutions of the Hartree-Fock equation have the same type of asymptotic regularity.
Given an algebra of pseudo-differential operators on a manifold, an elliptic element is said to be a reduction of orders, if it induces isomorphisms of Sobolev spaces with a corresponding shift of smoothness. Reductions of orders on a manifold with boundary refer to boundary value problems. We consider smooth symbols and ellipticity without additional boundary conditions which is the relevant case on a manifold with boundary. Starting from a class of symbols that has been investigated before for integer orders in boundary value problems with the transmission property we study operators of arbitrary real orders that play a similar role for operators without the transmission property. Moreover, we show that order reducing symbols have the Volterra property and are parabolic of anisotropy 1; analogous relations are formulated for arbitrary anisotropies. We finally investigate parameter-dependent operators, apply a kernel cut-off construction with respect to the parameter and show that corresponding holomorphic operator-valued Mellin symbols reduce orders in weighted Sobolev spaces on a cone with boundary.
Mixed elliptic problems are characterised by conditions that have a discontinuity on an interface of the boundary of codimension 1. The case of a smooth interface is treated in [3]; the investigation there refers to additional interface conditions and parametrices in standard Sobolev spaces. The present paper studies a necessary structure for the case of interfaces with conical singularities, namely, corner conormal symbols of such operators. These may be interpreted as families of mixed elliptic problems on a manifold with smooth interface. We mainly focus on second order operators and additional interface conditions that are holomorphic in an extra parameter. In particular, for the case of the Zaremba problem we explicitly obtain the number of potential conditions in this context. The inverses of conormal symbols are meromorphic families of pseudo-differential mixed problems referring to a smooth interface. Pointwise they can be computed along the lines [3].
We study pseudo-differential operators on a cylinder R x B where B has conical singularities. Configurations of that kind are the local model of corner singularities with cross section B. Operators in our calculus are assumed to have symbols a which are meromorphic in the complex covariable with values in the algebra of all cone operators on B. We show an explicit formula for solutions of the homogeneous equation if a is independent of the axial variable t is an element of R. Each non-bijectivity point of the symbol in the complex plane corresponds to a finite-dimensional space of solutions. Moreover, we give a relative index formula
We show relative index formulas for boundary value problems in cylindrical domains and Sobolev spaces with different weights at too. The amplitude functions are meromorphic in the axial covariable and take values in the space of boundary value problems on the cross section of the cylinder. Copyright (c) 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd
We employ specific smooth symbols of arbitrary real orders and with parameters, and we show that the associated operators induce isomorphisms between Sobolev spaces on a given manifold with boundary. Such operators for integer orders have the transmission property and belong to the calculus of Boutet de Monvel [1], cf. also [9]. In general, they fit to the algebra of boundary value problems without the transmission property in the sense of [17] and [24]. Order reducing elements of the present kind are useful for constructing parametrices of mixed elliptic problems. We show that order reducing symbols have the Volterra property and are parabolic of anisotropy 1; analogous relations are formulated for arbitrary anisotropies. We then investigate parameter-dependent operators, apply a kernel cut-off construction with respect to the parameter and show that corresponding holomorphic operator-valued Mellin symbols reduce orders in weighted Sobolev spaces on a cone with boundary. We finally construct order reducing operators on a compact manifold with conical singularities and boundary
Mixed elliptic problems for differential operators A in a domain Q with smooth boundary Y are studied in the form Au = f in Omega, T+/-u = g+/- on Y+/-, where Y+/- subset of Y are manifolds with a common boundary Z, such that Y- boolean OR Y+ = Y and Y- boolean AND Y+ = z, with boundary conditions T+/- on Y+/- (with smooth coefficients up to Z from the respective side) satisfying the Shapiro-Lopatinskij condition. We consider such problems in standard Sobolev spaces and characterise natural extra conditions on the interface Z with an analogue of Shapiro-Lopatinskij ellipticity for an associated transmission problem on the boundary; then the extended operator is Fredholm. The transmission operators on the boundary with respect to Z belong to a complete pseudo-differential calculus, a modification of the algebra of boundary value problems without the transmission property. We construct parametrices of elliptic elements in that calculus, and we obtain parametrices of the original mixed problems under additional conditions on the interface. We consider the Zaremba problem and other mixed problems for the Laplace operator, determine the number of extra conditions and calculate the index of associated Fredholm operators. We study pseudodifferential operators on a cylinder IR x B with cross section B that conical singularities. Configurations of that kind are the local model of cornere singularities with base spaces B. Operators A in our calculus are assumed to have symbols α which are meromorphic in the complex covariable with values in the space of all cone operators on B. In case α is dependent of the axial variable t ∈ IR, we show an explicit formula for solutions of the homogeneous equation. Each non-bjectivity point of the symbol in the complex plane corresponds to a finite-dimensional space of solutions. Moreover, we give a relative index formula.
We study mixed boundary value problems for an elliptic operator A on a manifold X with boundary Y , i.e., Au = f in int X, T±u = g± on int Y±, where Y is subdivided into subsets Y± with an interface Z and boundary conditions T± on Y± that are Shapiro-Lopatinskij elliptic up to Z from the respective sides. We assume that Z ⊂ Y is a manifold with conical singularity v. As an example we consider the Zaremba problem, where A is the Laplacian and T− Dirichlet, T+ Neumann conditions. The problem is treated as a corner boundary value problem near v which is the new point and the main difficulty in this paper. Outside v the problem belongs to the edge calculus as is shown in [3]. With a mixed problem we associate Fredholm operators in weighted corner Sobolev spaces with double weights, under suitable edge conditions along Z \ {v} of trace and potential type. We construct parametrices within the calculus and establish the regularity of solutions.

We study elliptic boundary value problems in a wedge with additional edge conditions of trace and potential type. We compute the (difference of the) number of such conditions in terms of the Fredholm index of the principal edge symbol. The task will be reduced to the case of special opening angles, together with a homotopy argument.
We establish essential steps of an iterative approach to operator algebras, ellipticity and Fredholm property on stratified spaces with singularities of second order. We cover, in particular, corner-degenerate differential operators. Our constructions are focused on the case where no additional conditions of trace and potential type are posed, but this case works well and will be considered in a forthcoming paper as a conclusion of the present calculus.
On a method for solution of the ordinary differential equations connected with Huygens' equations

We establish a new calculus of pseudodifferential operators on a manifold with smooth edges and study ellipticity with extra trace and potential conditions (as well as Green operators) at the edge. In contrast to the known scenario with conditions of that kind in integral form we admit in this paper ‘singular’ trace, potential and Green operators, which are related to the corresponding operators of positive type in Boutet de Monvel’s calculus for boundary value problems.
We study boundary-contact problems for elliptic equations (and systems) with interfaces that have conical singularities. Such problems represent continuous operators between weighted Sobolev spaces and subspaces with asymptotics. Ellipticity is formulated in terms of extra transmission conditions along the interfaces with a control of the conormal symbolic structure near conical singularities. We show regularity and asymptotics of solutions in weighted spaces, and we construct parametrices. The result will be illustrated by a number of explicit examples. (c) 2004 Elsevier Inc. We construct a new calculus of boundary value problems with the transmission property on a non-compact smooth manifold with boundary and conical exits to infinity. The symbols are classical both in covariables and variables. The operators are determined by principal symbol tuples modulo operators of lower orders and weights (such remainders are compact in weighted Sobolev spaces). We develop the concept of ellipticity, construct parametrices within the algebra and obtain the Fredholm property. For the existence of Shapiro-Lopatinskij elliptic boundary conditions to a given elliptic operator we prove an analogue of the Atiyah-Bott condition.
Boundary value problems for (pseudo-) differential operators on a manifold with edges can be characterised by a hierarchy of symbols. The symbol structure is responsible or ellipicity and for the nature of parametrices within an algebra of "edge-degenerate" pseudo-differential operators. The edge symbol component of that hierarchy takes values in boundary value problems on an infinite model cone, with edge variables and covariables as parameters. Edge symbols play a crucial role in this theory, in particular, the contribution with holomorphic operatot-valued Mellin symbols. We establish a calculus in s framework of "twisted homogenity" that refers to strongly continuous groups of isomorphisms on weighted cone Sobolev spaces. We then derive an equivalent representation with a particularly transparent composition behaviour.
