INTRODUCTION: For obtaining reliable information about physical activity in epidemiological studies, validated and easy-to-use instruments are required. Therefore, a new simplified physical activity record based on 15-min recording intervals was developed and validated. SUBJECTS: Nonobese volunteers (n = 31). MEASUREMENTS: Physical activity was recorded over a 7-day period without detailed instructions. Energy expenditure was calculated (EEsPAR) and compared to energy expenditure measured by doubly labelled water technique (EEDLW). RESULTS: A good agreement between EEsPAR (12.1 +/ 3.0) and EEDLW (11.7 +/- 3.3) with a mean difference of 0.33 +/- 1.55 MJ (r = 0.880, P < 0.001) was observed. The absolute difference between EEsPAR and EEDLW was <10% in 65% of the subjects. The difference between EEsPAR and EEDLW was independent of gender, age, body weight, and body mass index. A weak positive association between the difference and total body fat was observed (r = 0.618, P < 0.001), suggesting a slight tendency to overestimate EEsPAR with increasing total body fat. CONCLUSION: The new simplified physical activity protocol needs no detailed instructions, provides valid estimates of physical activity in nonobese free-living adults and can be used in epidemiological studies to assess total daily energy expenditure and physical activity level

Investigation of the ectoparasitic fauna (Siphonaptera: Ischnopsyllidae; Diptera: Nycteribiidae) on bats in Brandenburg, Germany. During the investigation of bats in hibernation places four species of fleas (Ischnopsyllus hexactenus (Kolenati, 1856) on Myotis myotis and Myotis nattereri, Nycteridopsylla pentactena (Kolenati, 1856)on Myotis daubentoni, Ischnopsyllus elongatus (Curtis, 1832) and Nycteridopsylla eusarca Dampf, 1908 on Nyctalus noctula) and one bat fly (Nycteribia kolenatii Theodor and Moscona, 1954 on Myotis daubentoni, Myotis natereri and Plecotus auritus were found. For the first time specimens of Pipistrellus pipistrellus and Pipistrellus pygmaeus were investigated separately in summer quarters to reveal differences in the parasitic flea fauna. Ischnopsyllus octactenus (Kolenati, 1856) was present on both bat species. The host-parasite relationship of autochthonous flea species in Brandenburg is discussed.
We investigate the operation problem for linear and deterministic context-free languages: Fix an operation on formal languages. Given linear (deterministic, respectively) context-free languages, is the application of this operation to the given languages still a linear (deterministic, respectively) context-free language? Besides the classical operations, for which the linear and deterministic context-free languages are not closed, we also consider the recently introduced root and power operation. We show non-semidecidability, to be more precise, we show completeness for the second level of the arithmetic hierarchy for all of the aforementioned operations, except for the power operation, if the underlying alphabet contains at least two letters. The result for the power opera, tion solves an open problem stated in Theoret. Comput. Sci. 314 (2004) 445-449

This paper describes the creation and preparation of TUSNELDA, a collection of corpus data built for linguistic research. This collection contains a number of linguistically annotated corpora which differ in various aspects such as language, text sorts / data types, encoded annotation levels, and linguistic theories underlying the annotation. The paper focuses on this variation on the one hand and the way how these heterogeneous data are integrated into one resource on the other hand.
This paper reviews the international literature on intimate partner violence with a focus on gender differences in perpetration and victimization rates. A total of 35 studies from 21 countries are discussed that report prevalence or incidence rates of men's and women's involvement in physical and/or sexual aggression against an intimate partner. In addition, evidence on risk factors as well as consequences of intimate partner violence for men and women is presented. Conceptual and methodological differences between the studies and the lack of comparable databases within countries are discussed as limitations of the evidence, and perspectives for future research are outlined in the framework of cross-cultural psychology
This paper examines the effect of spatially variable initial soil moisture and spatially variable precipitation on predictive uncertainty of simulated catchment scale runoff response in the presence of threshold processes. The underlying philosophy is to use a physically based hydrological model named CATFLOW as a virtual landscape, assuming perfect knowledge of the processes. The model, which in particular conceptualizes preferential flow as threshold process, was developed based on intensive process and parameter studies and has already been successfully applied to simulate flow and transport at different scales and catchments. Study area is the intensively investigated Weiherbach catchment. Numerous replicas of spatially variable initial soil moisture or spatially variable precipitation with the same geostatistical properties are conditioned to observed soil moisture and precipitation data and serve as initial and boundary conditions for the model during repeated simulations. The effect of spatially soil moisture on modeling catchment runoff response was found to depend strongly on average saturation of the catchment. Different realizations of initial soil moisture yielded strongly different hydrographs for intermediate initial soil moisture as well as in dry catchment conditions; in other states the effect was found to be much lower. This is clearly because of the threshold nature of preferential flow as well as the threshold nature of Hortonian production of overland flow. It was shown furthermore that the spatial pattern of a key parameter (macroporosity) that determined threshold behavior is of vast importance for the model response. The estimation of these patterns, which is mostly done based on sparse observations and expert knowledge, is a major source for predictive model uncertainty. Finally, it was shown that the usage of biased, i.e. spatially homogenized precipitation, input during parameter estimation yields a biased model structure, which gives poor results when used with highly distributed input. If spatially highly resolved precipitation was used during model parameter estimation. the predictive uncertainty of the model was clearly reduced. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved
Choroidal melanoma is the most frequent form of primary neoplasia among malignant ocular tumors. Since it is presumed that metastasis often occurs before the primary tumor is first diagnosed, early detection is exigent. The aim of the studies described in this report was to develop an objective, noninvasive method for the diagnosis of choroidal melanoma. The underlying new principle of fluorescence excitation is presented. This is based on the observation that melanin, due to its unique absorption characteristics, is selectively excited into fluorescence via stepwise absorption of two photons of a femtosecond laser emitting at 800 nm. In the experiment described, the fluorescence of excised tissue from healthy choroidal pigment epithelium was compared to that of excised choroidal melanoma. The fluorescence of choroidal melanomas exhibited a more reddish appearance and less intensity than that of healthy tissue. This implies that the configuration of melanin apparently changes during the process of malignant degeneration. The method described here could thus serve as an evidentiary objective diagnostic technique before initiating treatment for choroidal melanomas
We propose two principles that facilitate integration of two relational premises in spatial reasoning. Integration is easier if the anaphor in the second premise, P2, bears the role of the relatum (relatum = given). Moreover, integration is easier if, in P2, the anaphor is mentioned before the new element (given-new). In premises with canonical word order (grammatical subjects mentioned first), these principles always conflict with one another. In topicalized statements mentioning the prepositional phrase first, the two principles work in tandem. By varying word order, we tested the two principles by measuring P2 comprehension times. Comprehension times indicated that integration was easiest when P2 obeyed both principles and most difficult when both principles were violated. Canonical premises were of intermediate difficulty. This pattern emerged regardless of whether the anaphor was a definite description or a pronoun

The most striking phenomenon in the dynamics of granular gases is the formation of clusters and other structures. We investigate a gas of dissipatively colliding particles with a velocity dependent coefficient of restitution where cluster formation occurs as a transient phenomenon. Although for small impact velocity the particles collide elastically, surprisingly the temperature converges to zero
This essay focuses on the work of Mexican/Chicano performance artist Guillermo Gómez-Peña, whose main aesthetic principle lies in the criss-crossing of cultural, geographic and linguistic borders. Through his unique fusion of genres, discourses and media, Gómez-Peña creates a hybrid art form that also transgresses more conventional definitions of what constitutes culture. One of the central features of his "New World Border" (1992-1994) performance is the artistic transposition of site-specific border identities and texts to a global level; i.e., the border (and its transgression) becomes a metaphor to address a multiplicity of aesthetic, cultural and socio-political agendas. His performance "Temple of Confessions" (1994) aims, among others, at debunking the rather celebratory discourse of mainstream U.S. multiculturalism. In addition, his project of "reverse anthropology", which informs a number of his performance pieces, seeks to retain the resistance potential of minoritarian art by subverting hegemonic power hierarchies. As will be shown, his representational strategy of "as if" is used by Gómez-Peña and his collaborators to envision a postnational and transcultural spaciousness of the Americas.
On 26 December 2004, a moment magnitude M-w = 9.3 earthquake occurred along Northern Sumatra, the Nicobar and Andaman islands, resulting in a devastating tsunami in the Indian Ocean region(1). The rapid and accurate estimation of the rupture length and direction of such tsunami-generating earthquakes is crucial for constraining both tsunami wave- height models as well as the seismic moment of the events. Compressional seismic waves generated at the hypocentre of the Sumatra earthquake arrived after about 12 min at the broadband seismic stations of the German Regional Seismic Network (GRSN)(2,3), located approximately 9,000 km from the event. Here we present a modification of a standard array- seismological approach and show that it is possible to track the propagating rupture front of the Sumatra earthquake over a total rupture length of 1,150 km. We estimate the average rupture speed to be 2.3-2.7 km s(-1) and the total duration of rupture to be at least 430 s, and probably between 480 and 500 s.
TPK1 ( formerly KCO1) is the founding member of the family of two-pore domain K 1 channels in Arabidopsis ( Arabidopsis thaliana), which originally was described following expression in Sf9 insect cells as a Ca2(+)- and voltage- dependent outwardly rectifying plasma membrane K 1 channel. In plants, this channel has been shown by green fluorescent protein fusion to localize to the vacuolar membrane, which led to speculations that the TPK1 gene product would be a component of the nonselective, Ca2+ and voltage- dependent slow-vacuolar (SV) cation channel found in many plants species. Using yeast ( Saccharomyces cerevisiae) as an expression system for TPK1, we show functional expression of the channel in the vacuolar membrane. In isolated vacuoles of yeast yvc1 disruption mutants, the TPK1 gene product shows ion channel activity with some characteristics very similar to the SV-type channel. The open channel conductance of TPK1 in symmetrically 100mM KCl is slightly asymmetric with roughly 40 pS at positive membrane voltages and 75 pS at negative voltages. Similar to the SV-type channel, TPK1 is activated by cytosolic Ca2+, requiring micromolar concentration for activation. However, in contrast to the SV- type channel, TPK1 exhibits strong selectivity for K+ over Na+, and its activity turned out to be independent of the membrane voltage over the range of +/- 80mV. Our data clearly demonstrate that TPK1 is a voltage- independent, Ca2+- activated, K+- selective ion channel in the vacuolar membrane that does not mediate SV- type ionic currents
We apply the recently developed symbolic resonance analysis to electroencephalographic measurements of event- related brain potentials (ERPs) in a language processing experiment by using a three-symbol static encoding with varying thresholds for analyzing the ERP epochs, followed by a spin-flip transformation as a nonlinear filter. We compute an estimator of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for the symbolic dynamics measuring the coherence of threshold-crossing events. Hence, we utilize the inherent noise of the EEG for sweeping the underlying ERP components beyond the encoding thresholds. Plotting the SNR computed within the time window of a particular ERP component (the N400) against the encoding thresholds, we find different resonance curves for the experimental conditions. The maximal differences of the SNR lead to the estimation of optimal encoding thresholds. We show that topographic brain maps of the optimal threshold voltages and of their associated coherence differences are able to dissociate the underlying physiological processes, while corresponding maps gained from the customary voltage averaging technique are unable to do so
The authors demonstrate that the timing and sequencing of target durations require low-level timing and executive control. Sixteen young (M-age = 19 years) and 16 older (M-age = 70 years) adults participated in 2 experiments. In Experiment 1, individual mean-variance functions for low-level timing (isochronous tapping) and the sequencing of multiple targets (rhythm production) revealed (a) a dissociation of low-level timing and sequencing in both age groups, (b) negligible age differences for low-level timing, and (c) large age differences for sequencing. Experiment 2 supported the distinction between low-level timing and executive functions: Selection against a dominant rhythm and switching between rhythms impaired performances in both age groups and induced pronounced perseveration of the dominant pattern in older adults.
We report simulations of laser-driven many-electron dynamics by means of the time-dependent configuration interaction singles (doubles) approach. The method accounts for the correlation of ground and excited states, is capable of describing explicitly time-dependent, nonlinear phenomena, and is systematically improvable. Lithium cyanide serves as a molecular test system in which the charge distribution and hence the dipole moment are shown to be switchable, in a controlled fashion, by (a series of) laser pulses which induce selective, state-to-state electronic transitions. One focus of our time-dependent calculations is the question of how fast the transition from the ionic ground state to a specific excited state that is embedded in a multitude of other states can be made, without creating an electronic wave packet. High-resolution, large-area three-dimensional mapping of polarization profiles in electret polymers was carried out by means of a fast thermal pulse technique with a focused laser beam. A lateral resolution of 38 mu m and a near- surface depth resolution of less than 0.5 mu m was achieved. At larger depths, fast thermal diffusion in the metal electrode rather than the laser spot size becomes the limiting factor for the lateral resolution. (c) 2005 American Institute of Physics
We tested whether neighborhood density affects the clonal life history of the stoloniferous plant Ranunculus reptans through selection and genetic drift. After three generations of sexual reproduction of 16 low- and 16 high- density lines, we studied traits related to growth form and reproduction in a common competition free environment. A 7.7% lower branching frequency and slightly longer internodes indicated an evolutionary shift towards a less compact growth form under high neighborhood density, but because stolons grew also more vertically, horizontal spread per ramet was slightly decreased. Neighborhood density had no directional effects on the evolution of allocation to sexual and vegetative reproduction in R. reptans. Variation among replicated high-density lines was significantly lower than among replicated low-density lines in both growth form and reproductive characteristics, indicating less pronounced genetic drift under high neighborhood density. This study demonstrates that a clonal plant can respond to selection imposed by neighborhood density. Moreover, it shows that the effect of random genetic drift increases with decreasing neighborhood density. In a declining species, such as R. reptans in central Europe, this may lower the potential for adaptive evolutionary change and increase extinction risk
From the fruits of Bulbine abyssinica three new dimeric anthracene derivatives, (P)-8,9,1',8'- tetrahydroxy-3,3'-dimethyl[10,7'-bianthracene]-1,4,9',10'- tetraone (trivial name abyquinone A), (10R)-1,4,8,1',8-pentahydroxy-3,3'-dimethyl-[10,7'-bianthracene]9,9',10' (10H)-trione (trivial name abyquinone B), and (10R)-3,4'-dihydro-1,4,8,3',8',9'-hexahydroxy-3,3'- dimethyl-[10,7'-biant hracene]9,1'(10H,2'H)-dione (trivial name abyquinone Q were isolated. Despite their structural differences, these three compounds are connected to each other by the apparently biomimetic conversion of abyquinone C (a preanthraquinonylanthrone with two stereogenic centers) into B (an anthraquinonylanthrone with one stereogenic center) and finally into A (an axially chiral bianthraquinone) under mild conditions, involving a highly efficient center-to-axis chirality transfer. In addition, the known anthraquinones islandicin and chrysophanol were identified. The structures were determined on the basis of spectroscopical evidences, chemical transformations, and quantum chemical CD calculations. (C) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved
Electrochemical investigations of the blood oxygen carrier protein include both mediated and direct electron transfer. The reaction of haemoglobin (Hb) with typical mediators, e.g., ferricyanide, can be quantified by measuring the produced ferrocyanide which is equivalent to the Hb concentration. Immobilization of the mediator within the electrode body allows reagentless electrochemical measuring of Hb. On the other hand, entrapment of the protein within layers of polyclectrolytes, lipids, nanoparticles of clay or gold leads to a fast heterogeneous electron exchange of the partially denatured Hb. Thermodynamic theory of light-induced material transport in amorphous azobenzene polymer films
(2005)
It was discovered 10 years ago that the exposure of an initially flat layer of an azobenzene-containing polymer to an inhomogeneous light pattern leads to the formation of surface relief structures, accompanied by a mass transport over several micrometers. However, the driving force of this process is still unclear. We propose a new thermodynamic approach that explains a number of experimental findings including the light-induced deformation of free-standing films and the formation of surface relief gratings for main inscription geometries. Our basic assumption is that under homogeneous illumination, an initially isotropic sample should stretch itself along the polarization direction to compensate the entropy decrease produced by the photoinduced reorientation of azobenzene chromophores. The magnitude of the elastic stress, estimated by taking the derivative of the free energy over the sample deformation, is shown to be sufficient to induce plastic deformation of the polymer film. Orientational distributions of chromophores predicted by our model are compared with those deduced from Raman intensity measurements
Numerical thermodynamic modelling of mineral composition and modes for specified pressure-temperature paths reveals the strong influence of fractional garnet crystallisation, as well as water fractionation, on garnet growth histories in high pressure rocks. Disequilibrium element incorporation in garnet due to the development of chemical inhomogeneities around porphyroblasts leads to pronounced episodic growth and may even cause growth interruptions. Discontinuous growth, together with pressure- and temperature-dependent changes in garnet chemistry, cause zonation patterns that are indicative of different degrees of disequilibrium element incorporation. Chemical inhomogeneities in the matrix surrounding garnet porphyroblasts strongly affect garnet growth and lead to compositional discontinuities and steep compositional gradients in the garnet zonation pattern. Further, intergranular diffusion-controlled calcium incorporation can lead to a characteristic rise in grossular and spessartine contents at lower metamorphic conditions. The observation that garnet zonation patterns diagnostic of large and small fractionation effects coexist within the same sample suggests that garnet growth is often controlled by small-scale variations in the bulk rock chemistry. Therefore, the spatial distribution of garnet grains and their zonation patterns, together with numerical growth models of garnet zonation patterns, yield information about the processes limiting garnet growth. These processes include intercrystalline element transport and dissolution of pre-existing grains. Discontinuities in garnet growth induced by limited element supply can mask traces of the thermobarometric history of the rock. Therefore, thermodynamic modelling that considers fractional disequilibrium crystallisation is required to interpret compositional garnet zonation in terms of a quantitative pressure and temperature path of the host rock
The thermal unfolding of the wild-type lambda Cro repressor and of two designed variants, Cro K56-[DGEVK] and Cro K56-[DGEVK] Q16L, was studied by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and dynamic light scattering. The engineered Cro K56-[DGEVK] monomer has five additional amino acids inserted after position 56 of the wild-type sequence, while the K56-[DGEVK] Q16L variant differs only in one position (Gln-16 to Leu substitution) from the Cro K56-[DGEVK] sequence. The temperature dependence of selected protein backbone infrared `marker' bands revealed that Cro K56- [DGEVK] is slightly more stable than the wild-type protein, while the replacement of Gln-16 by Leu increases the thermal transition temperature by similar to 20 degrees C. Moreover, thermal unfolding of the two Cro variants was found to proceed through equilibrium unfolding intermediates and to involve the formation of oligomers. The first thermal transition of Cro K56-[DGEVK] involves the melting of major parts of its native secondary structure and is accompanied by the formation of dinners and non-native beta-sheet structures. These structures unfold during a second transition at higher temperatures, accompanied by the dissociation of the dimers. In contrast to the Cro K56-[DGEVK] protein, the intermediate state of the Cro K56-[DGEVK] Q16L variant is less well defined, and involves the formation of oligomers of different size. We introduce a new survey of massive stars in the Galaxy and the Magellanic Clouds using the Fibre Large Array Multi- Element Spectrograph ( FLAMES) instrument at the Very Large Telescope ( VLT). Here we present observations of 269 Galactic stars with the FLAMES- Giraffe Spectrograph ( R similar or equal to 25 000), in fields centered on the open clusters NGC3293, NGC4755 and NGC6611. These data are supplemented by a further 50 targets observed with the Fibre- Fed Extended Range Optical Spectrograph ( FEROS, R = 48 000). Following a description of our scientific motivations and target selection criteria, the data reduction methods are described; of critical importance the FLAMES reduction pipeline is found to yield spectra that are in excellent agreement with less automated methods. Spectral classifications and radial velocity measurements are presented for each star, with particular attention paid to morphological peculiarities and evidence of binarity. These observations represent a significant increase in the known spectral content of NGC3293 and NGC4755, and will serve as standards against which our subsequent FLAMES observations in the Magellanic Clouds will be compared
The unhappy obese child
(2005)
OBJECTIVE: One of the most painful aspects of obesity may be the emotional suffering it causes. The paper discusses the psychological and social effects of obesity. METHOD: Current studies examining the psychosocial strains of obese children and adolescents are reported. The report especially focuses on stigmatization, mental health disorders, school performance and health-related quality of life. DISCUSSION: Research is showing that obesity is associated with poorer psychosocial functioning-even compared with other chronic diseases. Future studies should further explicate the risk and protective factors for developing severe psychosocial strain
The Semantics of Ellipsis
(2005)
There are four phenomena that are particularly troublesome for theories of ellipsis: the existence of sloppy readings when the relevant pronouns cannot possibly be bound; an ellipsis being resolved in such a way that an ellipsis site in the antecedent is not understood in the way it was there; an ellipsis site drawing material from two or more separate antecedents; and ellipsis with no linguistic antecedent. These cases are accounted for by means of a new theory that involves copying syntactically incomplete antecedent material and an analysis of silent VPs and NPs that makes them into higher order definite descriptions that can be bound into.
The Cretaceous eo-Alpine collisional event in the European Eastern Alps is generally accepted to induce W-NW- directed thrusting both in basement and in sedimentary cover units. This study presents the first evidence of eo-Alpine W-NW directed normal kinematics along the Schneeberg Normal Fault Zone, which separates eo-Alpine high-pressure rocks in a footwall position from pre-Alpine basement rocks in a hanging wall position. New Garnet Sm-Nd data indicate that exhumation of the high-pressure rocks along the normal fault zone started around 95 Ma ago and continued up to low greenschistibrittle conditions at 76 Ma, as indicated by a Rb-Sr age from a low temperature mylonite. The occurrence of pre-Alpine basement rocks both in the hanging wall and the footwall of eo-Alpine high-pressure rocks suggests exhumation by extrusion processes. Despite the displacement or removal of parts of the lower portion of the high-pressure unit by Tertiary strike-slip faults, eo-Alpine top-to-ESE thrusting, as expected for the structurally lower part of an extruding wedge, was found at and below the base of the eo-Alpine high-pressure rocks. A Rb-Sr age of 77 Ma from a greenschist facies mylonite in this thrust shear zone shows the contemporaneity of deformation at the base and the top of the wedge. The tectonic transport direction within the extruding wedge was E-SE, opposite to the W-NW direction so far reported for the eo-Alpine event in the Eastern Alps. The contemporaneity of opposite tectonic transport directions during continental subduction may be explained by a double-vergent wedge model with a narrow zone of ductile flow, where the high-pressure rocks were exhumed. We investigate the influence of spatial heterogeneities on various aspects of brittle failure and seismicity in a model of a large strike-slip fault. The model dynamics is governed by realistic boundary conditions consisting of constant velocity motion of regions around the fault, static/kinetic friction laws, creep with depth-dependent coefficients, and 3-D elastic stress transfer. The dynamic rupture is approximated on a continuous time scale using a finite stress propagation velocity ("quasidynamic model''). The model produces a "brittle- ductile'' transition at a depth of about 12.5 km, realistic hypocenter distributions, and other features of seismicity compatible with observations. Previous work suggested that the range of size scales in the distribution of strength-stress heterogeneities acts as a tuning parameter of the dynamics. Here we test this hypothesis by performing a systematic parameter-space study with different forms of heterogeneities. In particular, we analyze spatial heterogeneities that can be tuned by a single parameter in two distributions: ( 1) high stress drop barriers in near- vertical directions and ( 2) spatial heterogeneities with fractal properties and variable fractal dimension. The results indicate that the first form of heterogeneities provides an effective means of tuning the behavior while the second does not. In relatively homogeneous cases, the fault self-organizes to large-scale patches and big events are associated with inward failure of individual patches and sequential failures of different patches. The frequency-size event statistics in such cases are compatible with the characteristic earthquake distribution and large events are quasi-periodic in time. In strongly heterogeneous or near-critical cases, the rupture histories are highly discontinuous and consist of complex migration patterns of slip on the fault. In such cases, the frequency-size and temporal statistics follow approximately power-law relations
We present two ERP experiments examining the resolution of language processing conflicts involving the multidimensional linguistic feature case, which determines processing in both syntactic and interpretive respects. Ungrammatical German structures with two identically case-marked arguments (double subject or double object constructions) were tested. In earlier studies, double subject constructions have been shown to elicit a biphasic pattern consisting of an N400 effect (a marker of thematic integration problems) followed by a P600 effect (a marker of syntactic ill-formedness). Here, we compare double nominative (subject case) constructions with double datives (indirect object case; Experiment 1) and double accusatives (direct object case; Experiment 2). All types of double case ungrammaticalities elicited a biphasic N400-P600 response. However, double datives differed from double nominatives in that they elicited a larger P600, suggesting that the ill-formedness is more salient in structures with two dative arguments. Double accusatives, by contrast, elicited a stronger N400 in comparison to double nominatives, suggesting that they induce more severe semantic-thematic integration problems. The results demonstrate that the human language comprehension system is sensitive to fine grained linguistic distinctions between different cases and utilizes these in its attempts to solve processing conflicts. The petrology of two distinct granulite types in the Hengshan Mts, China, and tectonic implications
(2005)
The Archean to Proterozoic Hengshan Complex (North China Craton), comprises tonalitic and granodioritic gneisses with subordinate mafic lenses, pegmatites and granites. Amphibolite facies assemblages predominate, although granulite-facies relics are widespread, and greenschist-facies retrogression occurs in km-wide shear zones. Mafic lenses, locally abundant, occur as strongly deformed amphibolite (hornblende + plagioclase) boudins or sheets. In contrast to previously published models we find two series of mafic rocks with distinctly different granulite-facies evolutions. In the north of the complex, relict high-pressure mafic granulites are garnet + clinopyroxene-bearing rocks with a secondary development of orthopyroxene around both garnet (kelyphites) and clinopyroxene (coronas). South of the newly defined central, E-W-trending, Zhujiafang shear zone, numerous mafic boudins and less-deformed dykes exhibit a macroscopically visible magmatic texture with coronitic growth of metamorphic garnet (full of quartz inclusions) between the magmatic plagioclase and pyroxene domains. Additional orthopyroxene (after magmatic augite) and sodic rims to magmatic plagioclase clearly indicate medium-pressure granulite-facies metamorphism. These findings suggest tectonic juxtaposition in this area of three different structural levels of the same Proterozoic-imprinted crust: high-pressure granulite grade in the northern Hengshan, medium-pressure granulite grade in the southern Hengshan and amphibolite- to greenschist-facies grade in the Wutaishan to the SE. Fundamental breakthroughs in the neurosciences, combined with technical innovations for measuring brain activity, are shedding new light on the neural basis of second language (L2) processing, and on its relationship to native language processing (L1). The long-held assumption that L1 and L2 are necessarily represented in different brain regions in bilinguals has not been confirmed. On the contrary, the available evidence indicates that L1 and L2 are processed by the same neural devices. The neural differences in L1 and L2 representations are only related to the specific computational demands, which vary according to the age of acquisition, the degree of mastery and the level of exposure to each language. Finally, the acquisition of L2 could be considered as a dynamic process, requiring additional neural resources in specific circumstances
We apply the multiconfiguration time-dependent Hartree-Fock method to electronic structure calculations and show that quantum chemical information can be obtained with this explicitly time-dependent approach. Different equations of motion are discussed, as well as the numerical cost. The two-electron integrals are calculated using a natural potential expansion, of which we describe the convergence behavior in detail
Recently, neurolinguistic explanations informed by linguistic theory have been proposed to account for spontaneous and elicited agrammatic speech production. These are either formulated in terms of impaired representations or they refer to impaired processing. Both have in common that they assume severe disorders of question production due to vulnerability of the left periphery of sentence structures in the representational account, of verb movement in the processing account. We report the results of question elicitation and spontaneous speech analysis in eight chronic German agrammatic speakers. The results indicate that there is not one homogeneous agrammatic pattern, but that the data reveal double dissociations which cannot be accounted for by the unitary explanations of agrammatism which are presently available. An alternative explanation will be provided which-in contrast to the representational account not only refers to global hierarchically organized nodes but relies on linguistic differences within these nodes. The assumption that they can be differentially affected in agrammatism can account for the observed patterns. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved
[GRAPHICS] Amino-substituted thio(seleno)acrylamides 1-4 were synthesized and their H-1 and C-13 NMR spectra assigned. Both the NMR data and the results of theoretical calculations at the ab initio level of theory were employed to elucidate the adopted structures of the compounds in terms of E/Z isomerism and s-cis/s-trans configuration. In the case of the asymmetrically N(Me)Ph-substituted compounds, ab initio GIAO-calculated ring current effects of the N-phenyl group were applied to successfully determine the preferred conformer bias. The restricted rotations about the two C-N partial double bonds were studied by DNMR and the barriers to rotation (Delta G(c)(double dagger)) determined at the coalescence temperatures, and these were discussed with respect to the structural differences between the compounds. The barriers to rotation were also calculated at the ab initio level of theory where the best results (R-2 = 0.8746) were obtained only with inclusion of the solvent at the SCIPCMHF/6-31G* level of theory. The calculations also provided means of assessing structural influences which were not available due to inaccessible rotation barriers. By means of natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis of 1-4, the occupation numbers of nitrogen lone pairs and bonding/antibonding pi/pi* orbitals were shown to quantitatively describe thio(seleno)amide/vinylogous thio(seleno)amide "resonance". Finally, the thio(seleno)carbonyl anisotropic effect was quantitatively calculated by the GIRO method and visualized by isochemical shielding surfaces (ICSS). Only marginal differences between the two anisotropic effects were calculated and are therefore of questionable utility for previous and future applications with respect to stereochemical assignments
The multiplication and antibody production of murine hybridoma cells cultured on five different polymer membranes were tested and compared with conventional tissue culture polystyrene (TCPS). Membranes were prepared from polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and acrylonitrile copolymerized with N-vinylpyrrolidone (NVP20, NVP30), Na-methallylsulfonate (NaMAS) and N-(3-amino-propyl-methacrylamide-hydrochloride) (APMA). Cell number and antibody concentration were quantified as criteria for viability and productivity. Adhesion of hybridoma cells was characterized by vital and scanning electron microscopy. The results suggest that a strong adhesion of cells, observed on APMA and TCPS, increased cell growth but reduced monoclonal antibody production. In contrast membranes with lowered adhesivity such as NVP20 provided favourable conditions for monoclonal antibody production. In addition it was shown that this membrane also possessed a minor fouling as indicated by the low decrease of water flux across the membrane after protein adsorption. It was concluded that NVP20 could be a suitable material for the development of hollow fibre membranes for bioreactors.
The structure of interaction products resulting from the reaction of unmodified glucose with benzyl isothiocyanate is reported. Prior to their identification, the main products of this reaction were isolated using solid- phase extraction (SPE) as well as preparative HPLC. They were then identified by NMR and MS as 3-benzyl-4-hydroxy-5-(D- arabino-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroxybutyl)- 1,3-oxazolidine-2-thione, 3-benzyl-4-hydroxy-4-hydroxymethyl-5-(D-erythro-1,2,3- trihydroxypropyl)- 1,3-oxazolidine-2-thione, N-benzyl-(D-gluco-4,5-dihydroxy-6-hydroxymethyl-tetrahydropyrano)[2,3-b] oxazolidine-2-thione and 3-benzyl-4-(N-benzyl amino)-5-(D-arabino-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroxybutyl)-1,3-thiazolidine-2-thione . The identity of the last compound was secured by X-ray crystal structure data. (C) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved
The Humboldt Digital Library
(2005)
Alexander von Humboldt’s maps, graphs and illustrations contain a great deal of detail, but in the available rare editions they are hardly visible to the naked eye. In many editions they have been reduced. In a digital library, they will become accessible in their entirety, and Internet technology will reproduce them in a form that overcomes the limitations of the original printing. The user will be able to enlarge the images and see details that might have been overlooked in the past. The Humboldt’s digital library will adhere to the standards for digital libraries established by the Open Archives Initiative (OAI) and the tools EPRINTS and DSPACE to provide the Web services and determine the most effective way to establish dynamic linking and knowledge based searching of information within the archive.
We present deep optical observations of the gravitational lens system CLASS B0218 + 357, from which we derive an estimate for the Hubble constant (H-0). Extensive radio observations using the VLA, MERLIN, the VLBA and VLBI have reduced the degeneracies between H-0 and the mass model parameters in this lens to one involving only the position of the radio-quiet lensing galaxy with respect to the lensed images. B0218 + 357 has an image separation of only 334 mas, so optical observations have, up until now, been unable to resolve the lens galaxy from the bright lensed images. Using the new Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS), installed on the Hubble Space Telescope in 2002, we have obtained deep optical images of the lens system and surrounding field. These observations have allowed us to determine the separation between the lens galaxy centre and the brightest image, and so estimate H-0. We find an optical galaxy position, and hence an H0 value, that varies depending on our approach to the spiral arms in B0218 + 357. If the most prominent spiral arms are left unmasked, we find H-0 = 70 +/- 5 km s(-1) Mpc(-1) (95 per cent confidence). If the spiral arms are masked out, we find H-0 = 61 +/- 7 km s(-1) Mpc(-1) (95 per cent confidence)
The gastrointestinal glutathione peroxidase (GI-GPx, GPx2) is a selenoprotein that was suggested to act as barrier against hydroperoxide absorption but has also been implicated in the control of inflammation and malignant growth. In CaCo-2 cells, GI-GPx was induced by t-butyl hydroquinone (tBHQ) and sulforaphane (SFN), i.e., "antioxidants" known to activate the "antioxidant response element" (ARE) via electrophilic thiol modification of Keap1 in the Nrf2/ Keap1 system. The functional significance of a putative ARE in the GI-GPx promoter was validated by transcriptional activation of reporter gene constructs upon exposure to electrophiles (tBHQ, SFN, and curcumin) or overexpression of Nrf2 and by reversal of these effects by mutation of the ARE in the promoter and by overexpressed Keap1. Binding of Nrf2 to the ARE sequence in authentic gpx2 was corroborated by chromatin immunoprecipitation. Thus, the presumed natural antioxidants sulforaphane and curcumin may exert their anti-inflammatory and anticarcinogenic effects not only by induction of phase 2 enzymes but also by the up-regulation of the selenoprotein GI-GPx
The present study aimed at assessing genetic purity of black wildebeest (Connochoetes gnou) at Abe Bailey Nature Reserve, Gauteng Province, South Africa, using a multitocus microsatellite approach. Five loci were studied in black and blue (C. taurinus) wildebeest, the latter being a closely related species and known to produce hybrids with the morphologically very similar black wildebeest. In fact, the entire national black wildebeest population of South Africa potentially contains a significant proportion of introgressed blue wildebeest genes. In our case, eight out of 39 alleles were unique to black and 22 to blue wildebeest, with nine alleles shared between pure populations of the two species in Line with their taxonomic proximity. A possible Limited past introgression of blue wildebeest genes into the Abe Bailey population, corresponding to documents on population history, was only supported by the presence of a single allele otherwise exclusively found in samples of four pure blue but not in samples of two pure black wildebeest control populations. However, an assignment test and coefficients of population divergence did not support an extended introgression of C. taurinus alleles into the C. gnou population under study. Average heterozygosity at Abe Bailey proved to be intermediate between black and blue wildebeest, the tatter species generally harbouring more genetic variation than the former owing to larger population sizes and the absence of population bottlenecks in historical times. The implications of our data are discussed with reference to the persistence of introgressed genes and the conservation of pure black wildebeest gene pools
Among plant remains from Mesolithic layers dating from 9249 to 7779 B.C. at the excavation site of Friesack IV in north-eastern Germany, nutlets of Urtica kioviensis were identified. Morphological studies have shown that they clearly differed from all other European Urtica species investigated. In contrast, pollen morphological investigations revealed only slight differences between the central European Urtica species, which could hardly have been noticed during routine or normal pollen analyses. The records of U. kioviensis nutlets are the first subfossil finds reported and prove the indigenous status of this taxon in north-eastern Germany. The records are discussed in the context of the overall species spectrum of the Mesolithic layers and consequences for the interpretation of pollen analytical studies concerning human impact are pointed out
The article is concerned with the acquisition of empty categories within the Principles-and-Parameters framework (Chomsky 1995; 1998; 2000; 2001ab; 2004). The ealy null subject is one of the most studied topics in the acquisition of syntax. Scholars have taken two basic positions on this phenomenon. One holds that the early null subject reflects an aspect of children's competence. The other tackles the problem by appealing to limitations on children's performance. This article is organized as follows: section 1 presents and evaluates the logical aspect of language acquisition under the P&P approach and gives insights into word order phenomena and the structure of early sentences. Section 2 is concerned with the null subject (pro-drop)-parameter and attributes this phenomenon to an incorrect setting of the parameters governing the lexical expression of subjects across languages. One theory assimilates the early null subject to null subjects in Slavic languages and Italian, and the other assimilates it to null subjects in Chinese
This paper describes the current findings concerning efficacy from randomized controlled trials of family-based interventions for children and adolescents with anxiety and depressive disorders. To date, parents have only been included in controlled trials of cognitive-behavioral interventions. Efficacy trials for anxiety disorders have only been carried out in 6- to 14-year olds, but have shown that younger children (7 to 10 years old) benefited when the family was involved. By contrast, the existing efficacy trials for depressive disorders have been limited to adolescents (13 to 18 years old), and have shown that family-based interventions are not superior to pure adolescent therapy
Two feeding experiments with female weaned piglets were carried out applying a complete two by two factorial design to investigate the effects of the dietary inclusion of 500 g/kg Fusarium toxin contaminated maize (8.6 mg/kg deoxynivalenol (DON); 1.2 mg/kg zearalenone (ZON)) and of 4 g/kg aluminosilicate (AS) as a detoxifying agent. The resulting four diets were fed ad libitum to a total of 80 piglets (20 piglets per group, allotted to a total of 20 pens) covering a live weight range of 10.5 +/- 1.3 to 27.5 +/- 4.4 kg in experiment 1, and to a total of 48 piglets (12 piglets per group, allotted to 12 pens) covering a live weight range of 9.7 +/- 1.8 to 21.4 +/- 4.8 kg in experiment 2. The animals of experiment 1 were slaughtered on days 34-36 of feeding the experimental diets. The mycotoxin analyses revealed that the control maize also contained considerable concentrations of Fusarium toxins, but the differences in DON and ZON concentrations between control and contaminated diets were sufficiently high to demonstrate both dose- related toxin effects. Voluntary feed intake and live weight gain of the animals were significantly reduced by the inclusion of Fusarium toxin contaminated maize into the diets in both experiments, while a significantly decreased feed to gain ratio was found in experiment 1. Furthermore, the relative weight of the uterus, stomach and heart of the animals fed the contaminated maize containing diets were significantly increased. Serum albumin concentrations and the activity of GLDH were significantly reduced by the inclusion of the contaminated maize. The addition of AS to the Fusarium toxin contaminated diets did not prevent or alleviate any of the mentioned effects. Moreover, the feed intake tended to be decreased by this supplementation in both experiments, while a significantly decreased feed to gain ratio was indicated for this factor in experiment one as well. The serum concentration of albumin and the activities of ASAT and gamma GT were significantly increased if AS was present in the diets while serum concentration of cholesterol and alpha-tocopherol were decreased significantly or in tendency, respectively. The concentrations of retinol and retinyl esters in liver and serum were not altered by the treatments. The analysed concentrations of zearalenone (ZON) and its metabolites in the bile fluid clearly indicated the differences in dietary ZON concentrations and showed that AS was ineffective in preventing the absorption of the toxin from the gastrointestinal tract. Also, serum concentrations of DON reflected the DON intake prior to sampling. However, there were no differences between groups fed diets with or without AS which also suggests the inefficacy of the tested AS in preventing the DON absorption. The present investigations failed to demonstrate a detoxifying capacity of the tested additive and emphasize the general necessity for a critical verification of detoxifying agents in vivo
The effect of water activity on the oxidation and structural state of Fe in a ferro-basaltic melt
(2005)
Experimental investigations have been performed at T = 1200 degrees C, P = 200 MPa and fH(2) corresponding to H2O-MnO-Mn3O4 and H2O-QFM redox buffers to study the effect of H2O activity on the oxidation and structural state of Fe in an iron-rich basaltic melt. The analysis of Mossbauer and Fe K-edge X-ray absorption nearedge structure (XANES) spectra of the quenched hydrous ferrobasaltic glasses shows that the Fe3+/Sigma Fe ratio of the glass is directly related to aH(2)O in a H-2-buffered system and, consequently, to the prevailing oxygen fugacity (through the reaction of water dissociation H2O <-> H-2 + 1/2 O-2). However, water as a chemical component of the silicate melt has an indistinguishable effect on the redox state of iron at studied conditions. The experimentally obtained relationship between fO(2) and Fe3+/Fe2+ in the hydrous ferrobasaltic melt can be adequately predicted in the investigated range by the existing empiric and thermodynamic models. The ratio of ferric and ferrous Fe is proportional to the oxygen fugacity to the power of similar to 0.25 which agrees with the theoretical value from the stoichiometry of the Fe redox reaction (FeO + 1/4 O-2 = FeO1.5). The mean centre shifts for Fe2+ and Fe3+ absorption doublets in Mossbauer spectra show little change with increasing Fe3+/Sigma Fe, suggesting no significant change in the type of iron coordination. Similarly, XANES preedge spectra indicate a mixed (C3h, Td, and Oh, i.e., 5-, 4-, and sixfold) coordination of Fe in hydrous basaltic glasses. Copyright (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd
Objectives: To examine the development of volition in young athletes attending an elite sport school. Because volition is important for realising long and intense training loads during the course of an athletic career the question is if the context of a school for young elite athletes promotes its development. Design: Two studies are described, one with a cross-sectional (study 1) and another with a longitudinal design (study 2). Methods: In the cross-sectional study the volitional skills of 327 students attending a school for young elite athletes were analysed according to age and living situation (at home/in the boarding school). In the longitudinal study the development of volition of 63 young elite athletes was compared to that of 122 non-athletic students attending a regular school. In both studies volition is measured with the Volitional Components Questionnaire (VCQ II). On the basis of a factor analysis conducted in study 1, two factors could be identified, namely self-optimisation, which includes skills needed to achieve goals, and self- impediment, which includes skills addressed in stress situations. Results: Study 1 suggests that self-impediment shows a development and that volitional skills develop more favourably in athletes living in the boarding school. These results are confirmed by the longitudinal study. The second study additionally shows that volitional skills concerning self- optimisation develop more favourably in the young elite athletes when compared to regular students. Conclusion: Only advantages concerning the development of volition in students attending a school for young elite athletes were found. (c) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved
After heterologous expression in Escherichia coli, the Azotobacter vinelandii rhodanese RhdA is purified in a persulfurated form (RhdA-SSH). We identified L-cysteine as the most effective sulfur source in producing RhdA-SSH. An E. coli soluble extract was required for in vitro persulfuration of RhdA, and the addition of pyridoxal-5'-phosphate increased RhdA-SSH production, indicating a likely involvement of a cysteine desulfurase. We were able to show the formation of a covalent complex between IscS and RhdA. By combining a time-course fluorescence assay and mass spectrometry analysis, we demonstrated the transfer of sulfur from E. coli IscS to RhdA. (c) 2005 Federation of European Biochemical Societies. This article draws on work at the interface of grammar and interaction to argue that the clause is a locus of interaction, in the sense that it is one of the most frequent grammatical formats which speakers orient to in projecting what actions are being done by others' utterances and in acting on these projections. Yet the way in which the clause affords grammatical projectability varies significantly from language to language. In fact, it depends on the nature of the clausal grammatical formats which are available as resources in a language: in some languages these allow early projection in the turn unit (as in English), in others they do not (as in Japanese). We focus here on these two languages and show that their variable grammatical projectability has repercussions on the way in which three interactional phenomena - next-turn onset, co-construction, and turn-unit extension - are realized in the respective speech communities. In each case the practices used are precisely the ones which the clausal grammatical formats in the given language promote. The evidence thus suggests that clauses are interactionally warranted, if variably built, formats for social action
The "Bohemians" of New Zealand - an ethnic group? In 1982 a small group of New Zealanders established contacts with the region of origin of their about 200 German-speaking ancestors who had emigrated from Bohemia for economic reasons in the 1860s and 1870s. They had all come from about twenty villages situated west of plzen and founded a rural settlement and participated in the foundation of a second one in New Zealand. Since World War I there had been no further contacts between the emigrants and their descendants on the one hand and their relatives in Bohemia on the other hand. For two reasons new contacts were established after such a long time: (1) the back-to the-roots-movement had spread to New Zealand from the USA, Canada and Australia, and (2) the status of cultural diversity keeps being enhanced in New Zealand since about 1970. These processes also influenced those people in New Zealand who call themselves "Bohemians" because of their ancestors' region of origin. Their total number is estimated at 10, 000 to 15, 000 at present. Up to now hardly any attention was attached to them in New Zealand by academic research and/or the general public. This paper discusses the history and today's situation of the former immigrants' community as well as the New Zealand "Bohemians " in general, raising the questions to what extent they can be defined as an ethnic group now and whether they will retain their status as a specific group in future
The conformational equilibria of the cis/trans isomers of some 1,4-di-substituted cyclohexanes (X = OH, OMe, Me, OCOCH3, OCOC(CH3)(3), OCOCCl3, OCOCF3) were calculated at several levels of theory; the best correlation between calculated and experimentally available Delta G(0)s refers to the MP2/6-311 +G*//MP2/6-311G* results. In addition, the hyperconjugative effect of the substituents was studied with the NBO options included in the GAUSSIAN-98 package; a number of interactions between filled NBOs and antibonding orbitals could be considered as most representative for delocalization along the molecules studied. The effect of the substituents on the molecular geometry of the substituted cyclohexanesas well as the partitioning of both hyperconjugative and steric substituent effects on the present conformational equilibria is critically evaluated. Our model [E. Kleinpeter, F. Taddei, J. Mol. Struct. (THEOCHEM) 683 (2004) 29] for interpreting the relative stability of conformers of substituted cyclohexanes could be further verified and its reliability assessed. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. This essay shows how Jewish identity in pre-1933 Germany defined itself and how the widely known concept of German-Jewish symbiosis came into question after the organized murder of the European Jews. The search for a German- Jewish legacy in postwar Germany as well as in the countries in which the Jewish emigres found a new home will be explored. Moreover, the Eastern European cultural roots of Jews who migrated from Russia to Germany in the 1990s will also be discussed
The aim of this article is to investigate the variability in following a textual pattern concerning the text type "portrait" in the press. Grounded on the assumption that the journalistic standard task to portray a person can be realized very differently, the varieties of portraying are brought into focus. In order to describe them three different approaches are selected: (1) a comprehensive text-linguistic approach (variability of textual patterns) makes a frame for analyses based on distinctions by (2) variety linguistics (kinds of language in the press) and (3) media sciences (plans for journalism)
Testing for ecological and genetic Allee effects in the invasive shrub Senna didymobotrya (Fabaceae)
(2005)
For an introduced plant species to become invasive, it must be able to reproduce even in initially small populations We tested for Aliee effects (reduced reproductive performance of individuals in small populations) in the nonclonal, NW-pollinated shrub Senna didymobotrya in its invasive range in South Africa. The species is self-compatible. but we found that in its invasive range in South Africa it requires pollinators to set seed. Nearly all stigmas (90%) received pollen. but natural fruit set has very low (3-20%), Pollen receipt and fruit set were not significantly correlated with population size. We thus found no evidence for an ecological Alice effect arising from pollen limitation in small populations. Offspring seedling performance, measured in terms of stern volume and leaf area, was also not significantly correlated with the number of plants in the source population. indicating that genetic Alice effects, such as inbreeding depression, are either absent or of such a small magnitude that they would be unlikely to limit further spread of S. didymobotrya in South Africa

Tense and Agreement dissociations in German agrammatic speakers : Underspecification vs. hierarchy
(2005)
The aim of the present paper was to investigate whether German agrammatic production data are compatible with the Tree-Pruning-Hypothesis (TPH; Friedmann & Grodzinsky, 1997). The theory predicts unidirectional patterns of dissociation in agrammatic production data with respect to Tense and Agreement. However, there was evidence of a double dissociation between Tense and Agreement in our data. The presence of a bidirectional dissociation is incompatible with any theory which assumes a hierarchical order between these categories such as the TPH or other versions thereof (such as Lee's, 2003 top-down hypothesis). It will be argued that the data can better be accounted for by relying on newer linguistic theories such as the Minimalist Program (MP, Chomsky, 2000), which does not assume a hierarchical order between independent syntactic Tense and Agreement nodes but treats them as different features (semantically interpretable vs. uninterpretable) under a single node. Molybdenum cofactor deficiency (MIM#252150) is a severe autosomal- recessive disorder with a devastating outcome. The cofactor is the product of a complex biosynthetic pathway involving four different genes (MOCS1, MOCS2, MOCS3 and GEPH). This disorder is caused almost exclusively by mutations in the MOCS1 or MOCS2 genes. Mutations affecting this biosynthetic pathway result in a lethal phenotype manifested by progressive neurological damage via the inactivation of the molybdenum cofactor-dependent enzyme, sulphite oxidase. Here we describe a total of ten novel disease-causing mutations in the MOCS1 and MOCS2 genes. Nine out of these ten mutations were classified as pathogenic in nature, since they create a stop codon, affect constitutive splice site positions, or change strictly conserved motifs. The tenth mutation abolishes the stop codon of the MOCS2B gene, thus elongating the corresponding protein. The mutation was expressed in vitro and was found to abolish the binding affinities of the large subunit of molybdopterin synthase (MOCS2B) for both precursor Z and the small subunit of molybdopterin synthase (MOCS2A)
We have disrupted expression of the mitochondrial Friedreich ataxia protein frataxin specifically in murine hepatocytes to generate mice with impaired mitochondrial function and decreased oxidative phosphorylation. These animals have a reduced life span and develop multiple hepatic tumors. Livers also show increased oxidative stress, impaired respiration and reduced ATP levels paralleled by reduced activity of iron-sulfur cluster (Fe/S) containing proteins (ISP), which all leads to increased hepatocyte turnover by promoting both apoptosis and proliferation. Accordingly, phosphorylation of the stress-inducible p38 MAP kinase was found to be specifically impaired following disruption of frataxin. Taken together, these findings indicate that frataxin may act as a mitochondrial tumor suppressor protein in mammals
Synthesis, characterisation and theoretical calculations of 2,6-diaminopurine etheno derivatives
(2005)
Four derivatives of 2,6-diaminopurine (1) were synthesised and characterised. When 1 was reacted with chloroacetaldehyde, 5-aminoimidazo[2,1- i] purine (2), 9-aminoimidazo[2,1-b]purine (3), 9-aminoimidazo[1,2- a]purine (4) and diimidazo[2,1-b: 2', 1'-i]purine (5) were formed. The purified products (3 - 5) were fully characterised by MS, complete NMR assignments as well as fluorescence and UV spectroscopy. The purified, isolated yields of these products ( 3 - 5) varied from 2.5 to 30%. The relative stability of different tautomers was investigated by theoretical calculations. Fluorescence characteristics are also discussed and compared to the starting material 1 and a reference molecule 2-aminopurine
Amphiphilic diblock copolymers composed of poly(butyl acrylate) as the hydrophobic block with a low glass transition temperature and of six different hydrophilic blocks (one anionic, one cationic, and four nonionic hydrophilic blocks) are prepared via reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. The nonionic hydrophilic blocks comprise in addition to the classical poly(dimethylacrylamide), the thermally sensitive poly(N- acryloylpyrrolidine), and a comb-type polymer made of a poly(ethylene glycol acrylate) macromonomer, as well as a new strongly hydrophilic sulfoxide polymer. The "living" character of the polymerizations is supported by very low polydispersity indexes and a good correlation between the molar masses obtained and the theoretically expected ones. Two distinct glass transition temperatures were found by differential scanning calorimetry for the block copolymers, suggesting the immiscibility of the blocks in bulk. The self-assembling properties of the amphiphilic diblock copolymers in aqueous and organic media were studied by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and dynamic light scattering, as a function of the polarity of the hydrophilic blocks, the ratio of the lengths of the two blocks, and the overall molar mass of the diblock copolymers. Micellelike aggregates with diameters from 25 to 100 mn in water are found, as well as inverse micelles in organic solvents. The length of the hydrophobic block seems to be the main factor governing the size of the aggregates in water. The aggregates are very stable upon dilution and temperature cycles. For large hydrophobic blocks, big structures are observed in addition to small micelles initially after the dispersion in water. As the big aggregates disappear slowly, the micellization process seems thermodynamically favored. If two populations of micelles made from different block copolymers are brought together, "mixed" micelles are formed. The implicit exchange of polymers proves the dynamic character of the micellar systems based on poly(butyl acrylate) as hydrophobic block
General syntheses have been developed for meso-substituted porphyrins with one or two substituents in the 5,10- positions and no beta substituents. 5-Substituted porphyrins with only one meso substituent are easily prepared by an acid-catalyzed condensation of dipyrromethane, pyrrole-2-carbaldehyde. and an appropriate aldehyde using a "[2+1+1]" approach. Similarly, 5,10-disubstituted porphyrins are accessible by simple condensation of unsubstituted tripyrrane with pyrrole and various aldehydes using a "[3+1]" approach. The yields for these reactions are low to moderate and additional formation of either di- or mono-substituted porphyrins due to scrambling of the intermediates is observed. However, the reactions can be performed quite easily and the desired target compounds are easily removed due to large differences in solubility. A complementary and more selective synthesis involves the use of organolithium reagents for SNAr reactions. Reaction of in situ generated porphyrin (porphine) with 1.1-8 equivalents of RLi gave the monosubstituted porphyrins, while reaction with 3-6 equivalents of RLi gave the 5,10-disubstituted porphyrins in yields ranging from 43 to 90%. These hitherto almost inaccessible compounds complete the series of different homologues of A-, 5,15-A(2)-, 5,10-A(2)-, A(3)-, and A(4)-type porphyrin's and allow an investigation of the gradual influence of type, number, and regiochemical arrangement of substituents on the properties of meso-substituted porphyrins. They also present important starting materials for the synthesis of ABCD porphyrins and are potential synthons for supramolecular materials requiring specific substituent orientations
Three series of new oligomeric cationic surfactants were synthesized. These amphiphiles are trimeric and tetrameric oligomeric quaternary ammonium chlorides, with spacer groups of different lengths separating the individual surfactant fragments. The properties of the compounds, such as Krafft temperatures, surface activity, micellization, viscosifying effects, foaming and solubilizing capacity, are studied. The influence of the degree of oligomerization and of the spacer group on the surfactant properties is discussed, in comparison with the analogous standard monomeric and dimeric ("gemini") surfactants. Typically, the evolution of the properties observed from standard to dimeric surfactants progresses with the trimers and tetramers, resulting for instance in extremely low critical micellization concentrations
We investigate the influence of noise on synchronization between the spiking activities of neurons with external impulsive forces. We first analyze the dependence of the synchronized firing on the amplitude and the angular frequency of the impulsive force in the noise-free system. Three cases (regular spiking, traveling wave, and chaotic spiking) with low synchronized firing are chosen to study effects due to noise. In each case we find that small noise can be a promoter of synchronization phenomena in neural activities, by choosing an appropriate noise intensity acting on some of the neurons.
