It is prooved that mermorphic, parameter-dependet elliptic Mellin symbols can be factorized in a particular way. The proof depends on the availability of logarithms of pseudodifferential operators. As a byproduct, we obtain a characterization of the group generated by pseudodifferential operators admitting a logarithm. The factorization has applications to the theory os pseudodifferential operators on spaces with conical singularities, e.g., to the index theory and the construction of various sub-calculi of the cone calculus.

The gravitationally lensed quasar Q2237+0305 in X-rays: ROSAT/HRI detection of the "Einstein Cross"
(1999)
We report the first detection of the gravitationally lensed quasar Q2237+0305 in X-rays. With a ROSAT/HRI exposure of 53 ksec taken in Nov./Dec. 1997, we found a count rate of 0.006 counts per second for the combined four images. This corresponds to an X-ray flux of 2.2*E(-13) erg/cm(2) /sec and an X-ray luminosity of 4.2*E(45) erg/sec (in the ROSAT energy window 0.1-2.4 keV). The ROSAT/HRI detector is not able to resolve spatially the four quasar images (maximum separation 1.8 arcsec). The analysis is based on about 330 source photons. The signal is consistent with no variability, but with low significance. This detection is promising in view of the upcoming X-ray missions with higher spatial/spectral resolution and/or collecting power (Chandra X-ray Observatory, XMM and ASTRO-E).
Three studies examined the processes of mental model generation after pre-exposure to uncontrollability and in a depressive state. The main purpose of the experiments was to test the implications of the cognitive exhaustion model applying an explicit conceptualization of social mental models and a process tracing method developed by von Hecker (1997). An experimental situation was created for observation of consecutive, rule-based construction steps as a function of input diagnosticity, and for the quality assessment of the constructed mental model. The findings showed that participants pre-exposed to uncontrollability, as well as depressed students, were able as were controls, to identify rule-relevant information needed for model construction. However, they were less able than controls to engage in more cognitively demanding and generative step of processing , i.e. in integrating the pieces of input information into a coherent mental model of sentiment relations.

In this brochure, Tristram argues that Standard English may be more indebted to the influence of 'Late British' than hitherto acknowledged by mainstream historical scholarship. By 'Late British' the native (or source) language of the about 2m language shifters in the wake of the Anglo-Saxon Conquest is meant who constituted the bulk of the native population of the island of Britain in the early middle ages. Although predictably, the influence of 'Late British' on Old English neither shows in the lexis of written Old English nor in its core grammar, it does show in the phonology (Peter Schrijver) and the inflectional syncretism of the Northern dialect texts. The influence of the interlanguage of the shifters only really surfaces in Middle English texts, after the diglossia between the language of the HIGH variety of Old English of the ruling elite and the LOW variety of the working population was discontinued under Norman rule. A number of grammatical features are listed in this brochure, which show that Present Day Standard English typologically sides with the Celtic languages, and with the Neo-Brittonic languages in particular, rather than with the other Continental Germanic languages. The brochure also calls for more research into this matter and in particular detailed investigations into the individual features mentioned.
The aim of the work was to present the results of the analyses economic standing of the partnership companies which lease agricultural real estate from Agricultural Property Agency of State Treasury (APA) in 1996 and 1997. The analyses proved poor economic condition of the firms under investigation and especially their low level of stabilisation (the index of total debt was in 1996 equal to 0.88 and in 1997 to 0.96) and the low level of their solvency.

Equilibrium constants and thermodynamic parameters for the complexation of nickel(II) and cobalt(II) by noncyclic, monocyclic and bicyclic ligands in acetonitrile have been determined by calorimetric titrations. The donor atoms and the ring size of the ligands play an important role for the stabilities of the complexes formed. An increasing number of nitrogen atoms in the crown ether favours complex formation. The number of nitrogen donor atoms of the macro- cyclic ligands examined has a direct influence on the values of the reaction enthalpies. Let Hsub(0), Hsub(1) be Hilbert spaces and L : Hsub(0) -> Hsub(1) be a linear bounded operator with ||L|| ≤ 1. Then L*L is a bounded linear self-adjoint non-negative operator in the Hilbert space Hsub(0) and one can use the Neumann series ∑∞sub(v=0)(I - L*L)v L*f in order to study solvability of the operator equation Lu = f. In particular, applying this method to the ill-posed Cauchy problem for solutions to an elliptic system Pu = 0 of linear PDE's of order p with smooth coefficients we obtain solvability conditions and representation formulae for solutions of the problem in Hardy spaces whenever these solutions exist. For the Cauchy-Riemann system in C the summands of the Neumann series are iterations of the Cauchy type integral. We also obtain similar results 1) for the equation Pu = f in Sobolev spaces, 2) for the Dirichlet problem and 3) for the Neumann problem related to operator P*P if P is a homogeneous first order operator and its coefficients are constant. In these cases the representations involve sums of series whose terms are iterations of integro-differential operators, while the solvability conditions consist of convergence of the series together with trivial necessary conditions.
