El paso de Alexander von Humboldt por Cuba en 1801 y en 1804, devino en un acontecimiento trascendental para la ciencia y la historiografía de la Mayor de las Antillas. Su estancia le permitió recopilar información, hacer experimentos científicos y entrar en contacto con la realidad de la colonia española en un momento de grandes cambios para su destino, cuando se inicia el despegue definitivo de la plantación esclavista, que la convirtió en el principal productor y exportador de azúcar y por un tiempo de café. El trabajo que se presenta analiza las impresiones críticas de Humboldt sobre los cambios económico-sociales y ambientales de la época y, en especial, el legado que sus opiniones y su obra representaron para el ambientalismo cubano desde el siglo XIX hasta el establecimiento, en 1996, del Parque Nacional que lleva su nombre, uno de los ecosistemas montañosos de mayor riqueza y endemismo en el planeta, declarado en 2001 por la UNESCO Patrimonio de la Humanidad.
