Der kurze Aufsatz gibt einen Überblick über den erhaltenen Briefwechsel zwischen A. v. Humboldt und Charles Lyell. Er veröffentlicht darüber hinaus einen undatierten, bisher unbekannten Brief Humboldts an Lyell. Der Brief kann mit Hilfe eines Briefes an Pertz datiert werden. Deshalb wird auch dieser Brief zum ersten Mal vollständig veröffentlicht.
Preußens Mann in Washington

Der Diplomat und preußische Gesandte in Washington, Friedrich von Gerolt, versorgte Humboldt während der 1840er und 1850er Jahre mit Informationen über die politischen und geistigen Entwicklungen auf dem nordamerikanischen Kontinent. Humboldt seinerseits förderte in Berlin Gerolts Karriere und protegierte ihn bei Hofe. In den von Ulrich Päßler vorgestellten Briefen aus den Jahren 1858/59 spricht Gerolt einige Entwicklungen in den Vereinigten Staaten an, die deren (geo-)politische Stellung in der Welt entscheidend prägen sollten.
Friedrich Wilhelm IV. wollte den preußischen Staat nach seiner Thronbesteigung auch auf den Gebieten der Kultur und Wissenschaft modernisieren. Bedeutende Persönlichkeiten wurden nach Berlin geholt. In vielen dieser Berufungsangelegenheiten kam Alexander von Humboldts Einfluss zum Tragen. Zu den Koryphäen, die von Bayern nach Preußen gelockt wurden, gehörte auch der Dichter und Orientalist Friedrich Rückert. Ulrike Leitner veranschaulicht in Ihrem Aufsatz Rückerts Berufung nach Berlin und präsentiert in diesem Kontext zwei Briefe.

Während der im September 1837 in Göttingen stattfindenden Universitätsfeierlichkeiten initiierten Alexander von Humboldt und Carl Friedrich Gauß gemeinsam ein Projekt; es ging dabei um die Frage, ob Sternschnuppen die erdmagnetischen Erscheinungen beeinflussen würden, dem Nordlicht vergleichbar. Dies sollte im folgenden November, anlässlich des zu erwartenden großen Sternschnuppenschauers, überprüft werden. Im Zentrum dieser Untersuchung steht der Brief von Alexander von Humboldt an Gauß vom 30. November 1837 (Briefwechsel Humboldt-Gauß, S. 63–65); in diesem wurden zwei Beilagen bzw. Anlagen angesprochen, die zwar noch existieren, die aber bei der Ausgabe des Humboldt-Gaußschen Briefwechsels fast ganz unberücksichtigt blieben. Es handelt sich erstens um einen Brief von dem in Breslau wirkenden Astronomen Boguslawski an Humboldt vom 15. November 1837, den Humboldt, versehen mit eigenen Anmerkungen, Gauß zukommen ließ, und zweitens um ein Dokument, enthaltend die von Humboldt und Herter in Berlin während der Zeit vom 12. bis 21. November angestellten erdmagnetischen Beobachtungen. Diese Dokumente sollen hier erstmals in den historischen Kontext eingebettet, vorgestellt werden, zusammen mit dem Bericht über die in Marburg gemachten Sternschnuppenbeobachtungen vom 12. bis 14. November, die Gerling veranlasst hatte.
Im Zusammenhang mit einer geplanten Wiederveröffentlichung des Bandes Die Jugendbriefe Alexander von Humboldts 1787-1799 durch den Akademie Verlages im Andenken an die kürzlich verstorbene Mitherausgeberin Ilse Jahn sollen in loser Folge bisher unpublizierte Briefe aus der Jugendzeit Alexander von Humboldts in der Rubrik Von Humboldts Hand erscheinen. Der folgende Brief Alexander von Humboldts an den Göttinger Arzt Christoph Girtanner steht am Anfang dieser Reihe, welche sukzessive versucht, neuere Erkenntnisse der Alexander-von-Humboldt-Forschungsstelle in Bezug auf die Jugendbriefe zu publizieren. Das Schreiben, welches zur so genannten Berlinka-Sammlung der Biblioteka Jagiellońska in Krakau gehört, gelangte während des Zweiten Weltkrieges nach Polen, und ist der Forschungsstelle vor einiger Zeit zugänglich gemacht worden. Editorisch werden sich die in dieser Rubrik erscheinenden Briefe Humboldts in den bestehenden Band der Jugendbriefe von 1973 einfügen.
Alexander von Humboldt und Hector Berlioz begegneten sich zum ersten Mal im Dezember 1842 in Paris. Später trafen sie sich mehrfach in Paris und Berlin, insbesondere im Februar 1847 in Berlin. Bei dieser Gelegenheit schrieb Humboldt einen Brief an Berlioz, in welchem er dem Komponisten ein Empfehlungsschreiben des preußischen Königs Friedrich Wilhelms IV. an dessen Schwester, die Zarin von Rußland, ankündigte. Der Humboldtsche Brief und das königliche Empfehlungssschreiben sind auf den Tag datiert, an dem Berlioz in St. Petersburg eintraf. In dem Artikel wird der Brief Humboldts zum ersten Mal veröffentlicht.
