La référence à Colomb est un lieu commun de la biographie humboldtienne. Humboldt lui-même le souligne particulièrement dans son Examen critique, en y ajoutant une dimension autobiographique. La contribution analyse, dans une perspective philologique, le matériel et les formes de mise en scène avec lesquelles une vie est représentée au travers d'une autre.

Juana Borrero y Pierra (1877–1896) war eine der wichtigsten Vertreterinnen des inselkubanischen Modernismo. Gleichwohl ist das Schaffen der schon zu Lebzeiten zum Wunderkind stilisierten Autorin, Dichterin und Malerin wissenschaftlich kaum eingehender untersucht worden. Die Werkstudie schlägt einen umfassenden, konsequent ästhetischen Blick auf das aus Gedichten, poetischer Prosa, literarischen Liebesbriefen, Zeichnungen und Malereien bestehende Gesamtwerk Borreros vor, das im Kern ein Streben nach Ganzheit von Kunst und Leben offenlegt. Dabei werden die Text- und Bildstrategien der Künstlerin mit den ästhetischen, soziohistorischen und biografischen Kontexten verzahnt, wodurch Juana Borreros Stimme als exemplarische Stimme der kubanischen Spätmoderne sowie einer bewegten kubanischen Literatur les- und sichtbar wird.

Gefälschter Humboldt

Einleitung Das Interesse am Leben Alexander von Humboldts hat neben ernsthaften Biographen stets auch oberflächliche Buchautoren und Fälscher auf den Plan gerufen. Bereits zu Humboldts Lebzeiten wurden faksimilierte Auszüge aus seinen Briefen unter Weglassung heikler Passagen veröffentlicht, um authentische Lebensäußerungen zu suggerieren. Mit gleicher Absicht stellte ein bis heute unbekannter Autor 1861 die angeblichen „Memoiren Alexander von Humboldt’s“ zusammen. Die Kompilation aus Fakten, Briefauszügen und frei erfundenen Äußerungen Humboldts präsentierte den Humanisten als Misanthropen und Verächter der Indiokultur – ein Bild, das selbst in fiktiven Darstellungen der neuesten Zeit nachwirkt. Der folgende, von Kurt-R. Biermann und Ingo Schwarz erstmals in der von der Berlin-Brandenburgischen Akademie der Wissenschaften herausgegeben Zeitschrift „Gegenworte“ zum Thema „Lug und Trug in den Wissenschaften“ veröffentlichte Artikel erschien im Jahr 1998. Die darin angegebenen Preise für Autographen sind in den letzten Jahren erheblich gestiegen – auch das ein Indiz für die nicht nachlassende Neugier auf den Menschen Alexander von Humboldt.
