Gustav Rose (1798-1873) begleitete Alexander von Humboldt auf seiner Russlandreise und stand bis zu Humboldts Tod persönlich und postalisch zum ihm in Kontakt. Die Edition des vorliegenden Briefs zielt darauf ab, die Bedeutung der Person Gustav Rose in ihrer Beziehung zu Alexander von Humboldt und ihrem Einfluss auf den mineralogisch-geologischen Teil des Kosmos zu beleuchten und dem Leser dieses interessante historische Dokument zugänglich zu machen.
Dass Darwin und Humboldt einander kannten und schätzten, ist allgemein bekannt. Im folgenden Text wird darüber hinaus genauer untersucht, inwieweit Darwin in seinem Werk Origin of Species durch Humboldts Arbeiten angeregt wurde. Darwins datierte Randbemerkungen zu Humboldts Büchern – die sich noch heute in Darwins Library in Cambridge befinden - belegen, dass Darwin noch wenige Wochen vor seinem Tode Humboldts Personal Narratives studierte. Alexander von Humboldts Arbeiten, vor allem sein Reisewerk mit seinen detailreichen Beobachtungen, war für Charles Darwin ein Leben lang eine wichtige empirische Quelle, regten ihn aber auch zum Widerspruch an. Das wird anhand des Themas „Migration“ erläutert. Dennoch waren Darwins und Humboldts Wahrnehmung und Bewertung von Literatur unterschiedlich und offenbaren kontroverse Ansichten von Entwicklung, wie sich u. a. in der Bewertung der Arbeiten Heinrich Bronns zeigt. Von Humboldts Alterswerk Kosmos. Entwurf einer physischen Weltbeschreibung, zeigte sich Darwin enttäuscht, weil er bestimmte Erwartungen hatte, die sich nicht erfüllten. Auch von Christian Gottfried Ehrenberg, einem Vertrauten Humboldts, erhoffte Darwin wichtige Erkenntnisse – er schickte an ihn 183 Proben zur Untersuchung. Leider erfüllte sich Darwins Hoffnung nicht.
Himmelsblau

Alexander von Humboldt widmete einen Teil seiner Forschungsarbeit Erscheinungen, die mit dem Phänomen „Farbe“ zusammenhängen. So erforschte er das Blau des Himmels, interessierte sich für gefärbte Stäube, roten Hagel sowie die Farben von Pflanzen. Mit vielen Wissenschaftler korrespondierte er über damit zusammenhängende Themen – beispielsweise über die Beziehung zwischen Sonnenlicht und der Farbe von Pflanzen, über farbige Schatten, die Blaue Grotte auf Capri, die Farbe von Sternen usw. Interessiert verfolgte Humboldt die Entwicklung von Modellen zur wissenschaftlichen Erklärung der Entstehung von Farben – so beispielsweise für die von Claude-Louis Berthollet entwickelte chemische Vorstellung über die Entstehung des Indigoblaus auf Textilien. Dieser Prozess war für die Textilindustrie von großer wirtschaftlicher Bedeutung. Die vorliegende Arbeit konzentriert sich auf Humboldts Interesse am Blau des Himmels, das er mit Künstlern, Schriftstellern und Wissenschaftlern wie Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Christian Gottfried Lichtenberg, Caspar David Friedrich and Horace Bénédict de Saussure teilte. Während seiner Reisen durch Südamerika benutzte er Saussure´s Cyanometer, um die Intensität des Blaus des Himmels zu bestimmen. Später korrespondierte er mit seinem Freund François Arago, der ein Cyanometer entwickelt hatte, das auf chromatischer Polarisation basierte, über dieses Instrument. Während seiner Arbeit am Werk „Kosmos. Entwurf einer physischen Weltbeschreibung“ erklärte ihm Arago die neuesten Fortschritte der Physik, speziell der Polarographie. Gegen Ende seines Lebens korrespondierte Humboldt mit dem Maler J. G. Schall und räumte ein, irgendwie das Interesse an der physikalischen Aufklärung des Himmelsblaus verloren zu haben.
