Die Bundesrepublik, ein Kind des Kalten Krieges, wurde in den ersten beiden Jahrzehnten ihres Bestehens vom wirtschaftlichen Wiederaufbau, von der Etablierung der parlamentarischen Demokratie, von den Anfängen einer zivilen Kultur und dem Ausgleich mit den Westmächten geprägt. Jenseits überkommener Deutungsmuster schildert Dominik Geppert in diesem anschaulich geschriebenen Band die Geschichte der Bundesrepublik Deutschland von den Anfängen bis zur Gegenwart. Er zeichnet den Weg vom Frontstaat im Kalten Krieg bis zur heutigen Macht in der Mitte Europas nach und legt dabei ein besonderes Augenmerk auf die sich verstärkt seit der Wiedervereinigung stellende Frage nach der staatlichen und gesellschaftlichen Identität Deutschlands. Gerade die Jahre nach 1989/1991 mit ihren neuen Herausforderungen finden hier eine ebenso fundierte wie manche vertrauten Narrative kritisch hinterfragende Darstellung.
Der Euro spaltet Europa: Die überkommenen Begründungen der europäischen Integration ? Abbau zwischenstaatlicher Konflikte, Einbindung Deutschlands, Bewahrung von Recht und Demokratie sowie Mehrung von Sicherheit und Wohlstand ? verkehren sich in der Schuldenkrise in ihr Gegenteil. Das Buch stellt die Alternativlosigkeit der Rettungspolitik infrage und skizziert eine tragfähigere Ordnung für das Europa der Zukunft. Geppert thematisiert insbesondere die Verschärfung des Nationalismus, die Rückkehr der deutschen Frage, die Gefährdung der sozialen Marktwirtschaft, die Entmachtung der Parlamente, die Aushebelung des Rechts und die Lehren, die wir aus der Geschichte ziehen sollten.
